Cairo is a vibrant, exhilarating, exotic, fascinating and welcoming city. Home to the best Pharaonic, Coptic and Islamic sights in Egypt, this city is where you never know what incredible, half-forgotten monument you might stumble across while wandering around. Enjoy the Nile view from your hotel room balcony, visit the capital’s medieval markets by Khan El-Khalili, or walk down the Nile promenade. There are also

plenty of cinemas, theatres and modern malls. Go for an opera or enjoy oriental music dance shows. Good for short breaks and long stays; you’ll get to see the Giza Pyramids, thousands of ancient artifacts in the Egyptian Museum of Antiquities and much more.Opera house:You would never guess from its non-stop schedule of activities that the Cairo Opera house burned to the ground in 1971.

From Verdi’s “Aida” to medleys on Um Kulthoum’s music to Orff’s “Carmina Burana” to pop concerts by local bands, the Cairo Opera has risen like a true phoenix from the ashes.Located on the upscale island of Zamalek, the Opera House is a gem of postmodern architecture. Originally designed in 1869 during the Khedive Ismail’s reign by Italian architects Avoscani and Rossi to celebrate the opening of

the Suez Canal, its redesign by a Japenese architect was unveiled in 1988. The Opera House is home to two main concert halls and an open air theatre, as well as a museum dedicated to sharing its history. Visitors to the museum can see such attractions as costumes given to the New Cairo Opera House by the Vienna State Opera, and a model of the New Opera House buildings and photos while it was

under construction, as well as a 2 metres long Arab flute, the Nay.Khan El-Khalili:No visit to Cairo is Complete without a stop at the Khan El-Khalili bazaar, where you will be transported back in time to an old Arab souk.Shop owners calling you to their stalls, the scent of spices, the

matter. When your shopping’s done, don’t miss out on a traditional cup of tea at the famous Fishawi’s cafe.Solar boats:Ancient Egyptians used to bury a ”solar barge” near the tomb of their pharaoh because they believed that their ruler needed transportation in the afterlife.

hustle and bustle of trade, and the many beautiful objects that can purchased will have you lost among alleys for hours.Put your haggling skills to the test when buying statuettes, spices, souvenirs, silver jewellery, t-shirts, galabiyyas, belly dancing costumes, or anything for that

In 1954, the parts of a cedar-wood barge were found in five pits near the Great Pyramid of Khufu. The barge was restored and assembled out of 1200 pieces of wood and it is displayed, since then, in a glass museum near the Great Pyramid in Giza.

Famous for being called the ”Pearl of the Mediterranean” the captivating Alexandria will fascinate you with its mix of history and modernity. Although very little remains of the old city, Alexandria still retains its Mediterranean ambience and old European residence houses, combined with old cafes and Greco

Roman monuments. The beauty and cosmopolitanism of Alexandria inspired great authors such as the British novelist E.M. Forster, the Greek poet Constantine Cavafy who respectively lived in Alexandria in the early and late 19th century, and Lawrence Durrell who lived and wrote about the city during World War II.

The Montazah GardenWalking down the Alexandrian world famous waterfront corniche you can’t miss the eye-catching beauty of the fantastic beaches and park of Montazah Gardens. Take a walk through the green and flourishing alleys of the park and have a look at the old Salamlek hotel in all its splendour. The El Salamlek Palace was actually built

in 1892 for H.H. Khedive Abbas Helmi II as the Khedive’s hunting lodge. It is located on a hill overlooking the Mediterranean, thus offering spectacular views of the coast.Alexandria Biblotica It’s located on a magnificent site in the Eastern Harbor, facing the sea on the north, and Alexandria University Complex on it’s

southern side. It is very close to the location of the Ancient Library in the Brucheion (the Ancient Royal Quarter), as verified by the 1993 archaeological survey. The library design comprises a

simple circle inclined towards the sea and partly submerged in a pool of water. The inclined roof lets in daylight indirectly and allows for an uninterrupted view of the Mediterranean.

Nestled inside a big circular bay and protected from the high seas by a series of rocks forming a natural breakwater, Marsa Matrouh is a relatively secluded destination on Egypt’s Mediterranean shore. It is the capital of the Matrouh Governorate, which extends from the 61st km of the Alexandria-Matrouh highway to the Egypt-

Libyan border (450 km of coast), from East to West, and from the coast 350 km deep into the western desert of Egypt, including Siwa Oasis, enjoy the long sandy white beaches and crystal clear waters.Beaches in Marsa MatrouhCleopatra Beach

Cleopatra’s Beach is a wonderful bay located on the opposite side of the biggest lagoon in Marsa Matrouh; it’s clear waters surrounded by rocks give the impression of a vast, square pool in which, according to the legend, Cleopatra came to bathe - with her lover, Mark Anthony. Ruins of one of her palaces were uncovered on the hillside opposite the pool and it seems that a subterranean

passage lead from the “villa“ to the beach, perhaps allowing cosy midnight swims!Agiba Beach

Visit one of the most beautiful virgin beaches in the world, the pride of Marsa el-Sharif. Roughly 40 meter long, the clean sand and cool waters of the beach are snuggled between cliffs. Climb up one of the cliffs for an astonishing view of the impossible blue greens of the Mediterranean contrasted with the light shades of the shore, or follow the narrow path leading to the beach for a revitalizing swim in the cool waters of the Mediterranean. El Gharam Beach

The Largest of Marsa Matrouh’s Beaches, Gharam Beach,

meaning “The Shore of Love“ in Arabic, is only 17 kilometers away from town. This paradisiacal location is a perfect romantic beach getaway. Come feel the calm waves caressing the fine and soft sand. Do not fight the temptation of sinking your toes into it and diving into the infinite blue. And although “Gharam“ is more secluded than most of the Egyptian White Med beaches, rest assured, you will still find places nearby to buy refreshments or any other beach-related products you might need. So relax, lie down on the sand and soak up

the Mediterranean sun at “The Shore of Love“.Rommel’s Beach Story has it that this is where the German Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, aka “the desert fox” used to go for his daily swim during World War II. Located a few metres west of Rommel’s Museum, where once stood Rommel’s headquarters, hidden in a cave, the beach is beautiful and offers amazing views of the natural lagoons of Marsa Matrouh. The beach is public and so it has been attracting great numbers of locals and Egyptian

tourists visiting the North Coast. The German general Rommel, popularly known as the “desert fox“ chose an extensive cave in the cliffs overlooking the harbour as his headquarters in Marsa Matrouh during WW II.Rommel MuseumThe caves have now been transformed into a small museum honouring Rommel. His personal effects, donated by his son Manfred, make this place worth a visit: the general’s full length leather coat, his compass and his marked up maps are all on display.

Famed for the decisive victory of the Allies over the Axis forces in the WW II North Africa campaign, El-Alamein is located half-way between Alexandria and Marsa Matrouh on the Egyptian North Coast. Today, it is home to war memorials, the British Memorial, the German Memorial and the Italian Memorial, as well

EL Alameinas cemeteries, and landmarks reminiscent of this important part of the town’s history. In Graeco-Roman times, El-Alamein was known as “Locassis”, which means the white shell; it has been so named because of its beautiful white sandy beaches. Aphrodite, the goddess of love, was worshipped there. Today, you

can bask in total luxury on the sandy white beaches of El-Alamein.El-Alamein War MuseumProbably one of the best museums in Egypt, The War Museum in El-Alamein sheds the light on the four main countries – Great Britain, Germany, Italy and Egypt – that were involved in the WW II battle of El-Alamein and it’s circumstances.

The indoor part of the museum houses weapons, uniforms and other artefacts from the battle. Audio recordings will guide you through your visit and tell you the battle story from both sides. We’re upbeat

We’re laid-back

Hi, So I’m on vacation. Like, REALLY on vacation. The entire family got on a plane together, but it’s as though we landed in different places. At last I can get to have some “me” time between our family outings. While they run around, I relax. While they play and laugh, I enjoy the stillness. Finally, I’m reading a book about something other than a fuzzy blue bear, and I love it!From an Egyptian mother to mothers around the world, Sharm el Sheikh is waiting for you!

Dahab, the famous “hippy” town of the Red Sea Riviera, is a great diving holiday destination for the experienced diver and for those seeking to obtain their scuba diving certification. World-famous dive sites such as the Blue Hole and the Canyon attract every year big numbers of diving enthusiasts. From the narrow continuous fringing reef that hugs Dahab’s shoreline, the underwater terrain rapidly slants downward to the fathomless depth of the Gulf of Aqaba. A part from the impressive

scenery below water and above the magnetism of diving in Dahab lies in its uniqueness.Dive sites in DahabSome of the most impressive dive sites of the Red Sea are situated in or around Dahab. Some of them are right on your doorstep, if you are staying in one of the hotels or camps in Assalah. Others are reachable by jeep or camel. All offer the stunning beauty of crystal clear water and the richness and variety that only the Red Sea in Egypt

can offer. Professional diving centers in Dahab, tender good value for money and the relaxed pace enhances the overall diving experience. The Blue Hole: A scuba diver “must”, the Blue Hole is many dives in one. Enjoy drifting along its sheer drop-off, and wait to see some big game out there. If you are a technical diver, don’t miss the arch which connects the Blue Hole with the open sea. A marvel of light and life which makes unforgettable memories.

Consists of four main areas: Nuweiba Tarabin, Nuweiba Town, The Dunes, and Nuweiba Muzeina. Nuweiba Tarabin is the northern area, and is made up of a thick grove of palm trees, a shallow bay, and the ruins of a Turkish fort. Inside the ruins is a well that has historically been used by the Bedouins as a source

Nuweibaof fresh water for hundreds of years. Nuweiba Tarabin was settled mostly in the 1980s when members of the Tarabin tribe residing in the area north of Nuweiba permanently moved into the area typically occupied in the summers, and began building simple accommodations, which gradually turned into more

established camps and huts as tourism picked up.Nuweiba, a dozy but very characteristic Bedouin town on the Gulf of Aqaba, offers a lot to the scuba diver. As a beautiful and relaxed diving holiday destination, Nuweiba will appeal to those looking for calm away from the crowds and a return to the virgin

Enjoy the world’s greatest open-air museum, filled with the awe inspir-ing monuments of ancient civiliza-tion.Luxor city contains nearly one third of the world’s antiquities. There is hardly a place in Luxor that doesn’t reflect the greatness of the ancient Egyptians and their civilization that dates back to seven thousands years ago. It attracts hordes of visi-tors from all over the world to enjoy the monuments of the eternal city and its temples with their tower-ing pillars. To say that Luxor area is only a major attraction for tourists in Egypt would be underestimating the city. It has been the prime tour-ist destination since the beginning of tourism to Egypt. Luxor is located in the Upper Egypt, in the province of Qena. It was the ancient city of Thebes - the capital of Ancient Egypt. The Arabs called it “Luxor” - which means “The city of Palaces” - because they were impressed by its magnificent edifices and huge buildings. What most people think of Luxor is really as a three different areas, the city of Luxor on the east side of the Nile, the town of Karnak that lies just to the north of Luxor, and Thebes that was called ”Waset” fac-ing Luxor by ancient Egyptians on the west side of the Nile. The West Bank: The Nile splits Lux-or into two sides. The eastern side where Karnak, and Luxor temples lied was called the living city in the ancient days and the western side was called ”the city of the death”. That is why all the tombs and fu-nereal temples are located on the western bank of Luxor. On the western side you can visit the Valley of Kings where 62 tombs were discovered. The most famous

one is that of king Tut Ankh Amun. On that side also lies the Valley of Queens, where 75 tombs were dis-covered. Most famous one is the tomb of Queen Nefertary, wife of Ramses II. The tombs of the Nobles lies between the kings and queens, where more than 400 beautifully colored tombs were discovered. On the western side you can also visit the temple of Ramses III which is called ”Habu City”. It is one of

the most beautiful funereal tem-ples, where colors on the walls are still as fresh as if they were just fin-ished. The East Bank: A strip of green in the middle of the desert, Luxor stands against the background the red rocks of the ”Libyan chain”. Charming and evocative, with the Nile banks lined with modern ho-tels, feluccas sailing along the quiet water of the river, the small,

composed streets of the bazaar embellished in the evening with their colors, sounds and lights. Luxor Museum: One of the best displays of antiquities in Egypt is lo-cated at the Luxor Museum opened in 1975. Housed within a modern building, the museum contains a modest collection of the highest quality artworks dating from the Predynastic period right through to the Islamic era.

Aswan lies on the right bank of the Nile. This is where the valley of the Nile with its typically gentle land-scape ends. This is where Egypt ends, and Nubian begins. Aswan is one of the highlights of Egyptian nature. Dark yellow stones, where green trees grow out of nothing, framed by the sky that’s always blue and the Nile even more blue, and its warm weather which is char-

acterized by dryness and sunshine throughout the year. Today, Aswan is the most beautiful winter resort not only in Egypt, but also in the whole world as its distinguished. Aswan is derived from the Ancient Egyptian word Swan, which means “the market” It was located on the main trading route between Egypt and the southern lands, where gold, slaves and ivory passed into

Egypt. It was also the major source of granite, sandstone and quartz-ite used in the construction of the various monuments throughout Egypt. It is a major mining area for alu-minium and iron as well as being a major stop for the cruise boats, as most of the Nile cruises sail be-tween Aswan and Luxor, and vice versa.

Thousands of tourists come to visit the wonders of Abu Simbel each year to sightsee around its world-famous temples. If you have time, do hang around for the Light and Sound Shows, which take place at Abu Simbel’s temples at the end of the day and are always extremely memorable, particularly when the laser beams rise behind the four statues of Ramses II, cre-ating a truly unique sight.Abu Simbel is best known for its two magnificent temples that were built to honour the great Phoraoh Ramses II and his wife Nefertari. The interiors of the Temple of Ramses II and Nefertari’s Temple of Hathor offer amazing oppor-tunities to see intricate carvings and details. Stunning views from the temples look out over Lake Nasser, formed by the damming of the Nile, and over the desert. The compact town of Abu Simbel is easy to get around on foot. The Sound and Light show at Abu Simbel will transport you to the time of the pharaohs. Enchanting you with melodious music, and bringing the ancient world to life around you, the show includes projections onto the temples showing how they once looked. The programme is presented in a number of languages with the provision of earpieces. It is an ex-perience not to be missed, one that will make your visit to Abu Simbel the memory of a lifetime. The temples of Abu Simbel are the main attractions here, with the enormous Temple of Ramses II being the main attraction, fol-lowed by the equally grand Tem-

Page 74: Egyptair Holidays

The oases of Western Egypt appear to be islands not only in the seemingly endless expanse of Saharan sand, but also in time. This is where fairy tales still come true: seeing the sunrise from the back of a camel, or the spectacular views from on top of sand dune into the majestic expanse of desert.Noon in the quite shade of palm groves, or perhaps in the cool spring-fed pool at one of the region’s splendid eco-lodges, waiting until a ripe date from an overhanging palm tree drops into one’s open month; a late

afternoon walk through pharaonic temples or between mud brick houses in ageless villages; and nights spent at a campfire in front

of a Bedouins’ tent, enchanted by garlands of tales, with nothing above but the twinkling stars of a clear desert sky.

The Fellah, rural peasants, continue to work the fields, and the women and children line up in front of mud brick houses bordering palm-

The 230 km2 Qaroun lake and the adjacent Wadi El-Rayan nature reserve are valuable protected areas, and the migratory birds these areas attract will be of particular delight to bird lovers. In Wadi Al-Hitan, one can marvel at the gigantic skeletons of the prehistoric whales, washed up when the
