Challenges for the Agricultural Development

• High population growth rate (3.2%)

• Degradation of natural resources as result of deforestation and overgrazing

• Expansion of cultivation into unterraced steep slopes (>30%)

• Soil loss due to rain and wind induced erosion(1.9 bn. tons of topsoil annually / 30,000 ha)

• Reduction of soil fertility due to inadequate land management practices

• Low agricultural productivity

Strategy of the Ethiopian Government

• Sustainlable Land Management program (SLMP) from the Ministry of Agriculture- 177 watersheds at 10,000 ha each in 6 regions(currently covered 35 WB, 23 KfW – TC support to 56)

Objectives:- Reduced land degradation- Improved agricultural productivity of smallholder farms

• Technical Cooperation/TC (GIZ)- Advisory services and training of specialists - Development of national, regional, and local

implementation capacities - 17 million EUR + 11 million EUR new commitment

• Financial Cooperation/FC (KfW)- Financing of sustainable land management measures - 13 million EUR + 10 million EUR of new commitment

• Close interaction between TC and FC

Results achieved so far

• 20,000 households apply SLM measures on private and communal land (e.g. erosion protection).

• SLM measures applied on 35,000 ha of farmland.

• 35,000 ha of forest are used in accordance with principles of sustainable forest management .

• Multi-level approach links policy advice with direct implementation and vice versa.

- Increase of resilience against droughts and flooding.
