Why eggplant? If youve lived in the

    Loomis Basin for some time

chances are you know thehistory of the Loomis Egg-plant Festival and have theanswer to the question,Why Eggplant?

It all started 26 years agowith Tom and Judi Bentzienand Skip Wright local busi-ness owners with a sense ofhumor. They needed a funevent. Sources say they re-searched festivals and thejoke was, All the good fruit

and vegetable festivals aretaken. So why not egg-plant! Eggplants grow inhundreds of shapes andsizes, boast many beautifulcolors and chefs love to cookwith them.

Not grown in LoomisWhen the question was

asked, Do you grow egg-plant in Loomis? The reply

was No, but we do now. Thus began a learning

program in the art of grow-

ing eggplant for manyhome gardeners in theLoomis Basin.

Some assume that egg-plant is a vegetable and aresurprised to discover itsreally a fruit. In the 17thcentury, Thomas Jeffersonbrought eggplant to thiscountry from France. Theflowers of the eggplant aresimilar to those of a potatoand tomato and the edible

part of the plant is a largepear-shaped fruit like aberry.

How it all beganWhile the original idea of

the festival may have beenhalf serious and half pokingfun at fruit and vegetablefestivals, the Loomis BasinChamber of Commercesupported the festival proj-

ect with two goals toattract people from beyondthe Loomis Basin and pro-

mote the local businesscommunity.Twenty-six years later, the

event still has free admissionand parking. This couldnthappen without our volun-teers, businesses and spon-sors. Boy Scouts of Americaand Cub Scouts assist withcontests like Eggonopolis500, parking and clean up.All businesses contributeparking space. Taylors and

the Blue Goose Event Cen-ter, McLaughlin Studio andmany local businesses giveof their time. Festival volun-teers include members ofthe sheriffs department, firedepartment and chambermembers.

Before the first EggplantFestival in 1987, there weretwo very important annualevents in Loomis Loomis

Community Days and theDel Oro Band Spectacular.

    Over the years, the

Chamber has combinedCommunity Days with theEggplant Festival. EachEggplant Festival starts itsopening ceremonies at 8:45a.m.,with the Del Oro Band.

    Why shouldyou attend?

This is chance to visitfriends, old and new. TheFestival is full of fun; food, entertainment, and a won-

derful opportunity for peo-ple new to the area to meetmembers of the historicalsociety and our many com-munity groups.

Eggplant, whether youlove or hate it; or call it afruit or vegetable, this is onefestival not to be missed.
