“I AM suffering at the hands offellow Africans. I don’t knowwhere to turn to. My country

Jeshua lives in Umzimkhulu withhis girlfriend and three children. Heowns a barber shop in Ixopo, butstruggles tomake endsmeet becausehe claims his efforts are constantlyshattered by South Africans who are

jealous of his business.According to the “Enough

Project”, an initiative that works toend genocide and crimes against hu-manity, since the 19th century theDRC’s vastnatural resourceshaveat-tracted violent intervention fromabroad and stoked internal conflict.

Today the DRC struggles with anexplosive combination of conflict atlocal, regional and national levels.

“Since I arrived in this country Ihave faced opposition fromSouthAf-ricans who insult me, calling me a“kwere-kwere”. I started this barbershoptomakealivingbecauseIcancuthair very well. I started the businessin a tent, then I thought of expandingand bought a container in which torun it from. The first container was

destroyed by people who said thatthey didn’t want a foreigner here.”

To add salt to the wound, Jeshuarecalls howhis brother, who also ranabarbershop, wasstonedtodeathbypupils in Ixopo last year.

“I was in Umzimkhulu when thenews thatmybrotherhadbeenkilledlikeadogcame through. Iwas toldhewas attacked because he was carry-ingabag that looked likeone thathadbeen stolen at a sports ground,” hesaid.

“I don’t know what we have doneto South Africans for them to hate usthismuch. Just recently another con-tainer I had bought was ‘crushed’ bythe police for no reason.Whatmakesme believe that I was targeted be-cause I am a refugee is that there are

many containers in Ixopo but onlymine was targeted,” Jeshua added.

He said he has legal documents tobe in the country as he was grantedasylum status and protection byHome Affairs in terms of the section24 of Refugee Act No 130 of 1998.

Jeshua said he has a degree incommunication management andcertificate inmedia studies and crea-tive writing.

Forced marriage still prevalentNTUNTU DWEBA>>[email protected]

FORCED marriage (ukuthwala) is stillwidely practised in the rural areas of Um-zimkhulu.

In an effort to raise awareness aboutthis an anti-ukuthwala campaign was heldin Rhaloti village (Ward 10) Umzimkhulurecently.

Ukuthwala is a form of the abductionof a young woman by a man and his friendswith the intention of compelling the wom-an’s family to agree to their marriage. It of-ten involves violence and rape.

The prevalence of this practise in Um-zimkhulu was revealed by reports from theDepartment of Community Safety &Liaison and the Department of SocialDevelopment in Umzimkhulu.

Umzimkhulu Local Municipality mayorand chairperson of the local stakeholdersforum Mphuthumi Mpabanga said theawareness campaign was important as iteducates the community about their rightsas citizens.

“The community must be aware thatpractices such as ukuthwala don’t have aplace in our community. We live in a democ-racy and practises that undermine otherpeople’s rights will not be tolerated,” hesaid.

Speaking at the event Ward 10 Cllr Bo-nisiwe Cira called on Umzimkhulu commu-

nity members to report people who contin-ue with this practise to the authorities.

She encouraged girls and boys to ab-stain from sex.

Community members and stakehold-ers at the event suggested that the cam-paign be held annually.
