1 IntroductionThis chapter is a brief introduction to EFI Designer Edition. It describes the purpose for which the software was designed and provides details of the hardware and software requirements necessary to install and run your software. In addition, this chapter includes an overview of the structure of the manual.

1.1 What is EFI Designer Edition?EFI Designer Edition is the perfect tool for anyone wanting to achieve high-quality color reproduction.

The software enables you to use a conventional office inkjet printer to:

• create CMYK digital proofs that simulate color results of jobs that will later be printed on a professional printing press

• reproduce RGB digital photographs in vivid color

Both workflows provide accurate and consistent color results without the need for complicated color management settings.

The software runs on both Windows and Macintosh OS and is extremely easy to use. The standard paper and image profiles provided with the software enable your inkjet printer to simulate a wide variety of different output devices.

Thus, EFI Designer Edition is ideal for designers, digital photographers and anyone else for whom color-accurate print results constitute an important part of their daily work.

With regular calibration and proper use of the available profiles, your printer will output consistent color results for many years.

1.2 System requirementsThe following minimum system requirements are necessary to install and run EFI Designer Edition successfully.

1.3 About this manualThis manual is divided into the following chapters:

Chapter 1 is concerned with setting up your software.

Chapter 2 shows you how to obtain your first printout. It also includes instructions on how to set up EFI Designer Edition as a virtual printer if you want to print from an application.

Chapter 3 describes the user interface and explains all the available settings.

Chapter 4 deals with the subject of color management and explains the importance of selecting the correct profiles to ensure color-accurate output.

Chapter 5 explains how to create and work with nestings.

Chapter 6 is concerned with managing spot colors. It shows you how to define spot colors using the tool EFI Color Editor.

Chapter 7 shows you how to use the tool EFI Ink Assistant to ensure the consistency of your printer’s color reproduction.

Chapter 8 describes how to create your own media profiles and implement them in EFI Designer Edition using the tool EFI Profile Connector.

Chapter 9 explains how to output simulated PANTONE spot colors on a selected print medium.

Chapter 10 deals with the subject of installing double-byte fonts.

Chapter 11 describes how to download and install software and profile updates from the EFI website.

Chapter 12 explains which steps to take should you encounter problems during the course of your work. In this chapter, you will also find details of how to contact EFI’s customer support service.

1.4 Syntax

The EFI Designer Edition software runs on both Windows and Macintosh OS. However, please note that Macintosh terminology has been given priority throughout this manual. Thus, for example, the "Preferences" dialog is described as having seven "panes". In Windows terminology, these would normally be referred to as "tabs". Similarly, the "Job settings drawer" will be recognized as a "property inspector" by Windows users.

With the exception of the setting up and uninstall procedures for Windows, the screen captures in this manual have been created from the Macintosh OS. If you are using the Windows version of EFI Designer Edition or a different version of Mac OS X, you may notice slight differences in the appearance of your software. However, unless otherwise stated, the functionality is the same for all operating systems.

Notes give additional, useful information about specific topics.

Warnings must be read carefully. They indicate permanent actions which, once executed, cannot be undone.

2 PrintingThis chapter describes how to print directly from EFI Designer Edition and how to set up your software as a virtual printer to enable you to print from an application.

2.1 Printing directly from EFI Designer Edition

This section leads you step by step through a practical example of how to obtain your first printout using the minimum of necessary settings.

It assumes that you have already correctly set up a connection to your printer, as described in the printed booklet provided with EFI Designer Edition. Refer also to the section “Printer pane” on page 3-12 if you require further information.

The screen captures in this chapter have been created from the Macintosh OS. If you are using the Windows version of EFI Designer Edition or a different version of Mac OS X, you may notice slight differences in the appearance of your software. However, unless otherwise stated, the functionality is the same for all operating systems.

Print samples are provided in the "Goodies" sub-folder. You may use one of these files or any image file of your own.

EFI Designer Edition supports the following single-file formats:

• PDF (composite and separated)

• EPS

• PS (composite and separated)

• JPEG

• TIFF (RGB, L*a*b*, CMYK)

• TIFF with indexed colors

• RPF 2.0

• BRP

Proceed as follows:

1. Load paper in your printer.

2. If you are using a Macintosh, click the program icon in the Dock to start EFI Designer Edition.

If you are working on a PC, double-click the program icon on your desktop to start EFI Designer Edition.

The EFI Designer Edition window opens.

3. In the toolbar, click "Preferences" to open the "Preferences" dialog.

The "Preferences" dialog consists of six panes. The settings you make in this dialog are applied to all jobs that you subsequently load in EFI Designer Edition.

4. In the toolbar, click "Layout" to open the "Layout" pane.

5. Select the scaling option "Fit to paper size". This ensures that your job will be scaled to fit on the paper size loaded in the printer.

6. In the toolbar, click "Color" to open the "Color" pane.

Windows users will see an extended window on running EFI Designer Edition. In the Macintosh version, the "Job settings" drawer is hidden by default, but can be displayed by clicking the appropriate button on the user interface.

This setting is not necessary if you are sure that your job will fit on your chosen paper size.

7. In the "Media profiles" area, select the type of paper you have loaded in your printer. Then choose a print quality.

8. Click "OK" to close the "Preferences" dialog.

9. Load your job using one of the following methods:

• In the toolbar, click "Add" and navigate to your image file. Alternatively, select "Add Jobs" from the "JobList" menu

• Use the drag-and-drop function to release your image file in the upper part of the program window.

10. Highlight your job in the program window and click the "Print" button in the toolbar.

This concludes a brief description of how to print with your new software.

EFI Designer Edition does, however, provide you with many different settings with which you can influence your print result. You will find details of all the available settings in the chapter “User interface” on page 3-1.

2.2 Setting up EFI Designer Edition as a virtual printer

If you want to print straight from an application, you must first set up EFI Designer Edition as a virtual printer. To do this, follow the steps in the sections below for your particular system configuration.

Some printers have a feature which automatically transmits information about the type of paper loaded in the printer to the software. If you have such a printer, EFI Designer Edition will make the appropriate paper setting for you.

Please be aware that if you try and override this setting by making changes that do not match the type of paper inserted in the printer, a warning message will appear when you submit a print job.

A blue frame indicates the current position of the cursor in the program window. If the cursor is positioned in the lower section of the program window when you click this button, a nesting will be created; otherwise a job will be added to the job list.

If you release your image file in the lower part of the program window, you will create a nesting. You will find detailed information on creating and working with nestings in the chapter “Nestings” on page 5-1.


2.2.1 Windows server/Windows client

Server computer:

1. Make sure that EFI Designer Edition is correctly installed and configured for printing.

In Windows, EFI Designer Edition automatically creates a shared printer which can be used like any other shared printer. No steps are necessary and you can print directly from your application.

Client computer:

1. Go to "My Network Places" and double-click "Entire Network". Then double-click "Microsoft Windows Network".

2. Navigate to the computer on which EFI Designer Edition is installed.

3. Double-click the computer icon to display the list of printers that are shared on that computer.

4. Double-click "EFI Designer Edition".

EFI Designer Edition is added to the list of available printers and can be selected in your application.

2.2.2 Windows server/Macintosh OS X client

Server computer:

Before you can print directly from a Macintosh application, you need to set up a connection in Windows.


2. Make sure that the AppleTalk protocol is available on the Server computer.

Please note: Windows XP does not support AppleTalk printing. To print from a Macintosh OS X client to Windows XP, try setting up a connection using the TCP/IP protocol instead.


3. From the "View" menu of EFI Designer Edition, choose "EFI Spooler" and make sure that the AppleTalk spooler is active.

To make any necessary changes in the dialog "EFI Spooler":

• Click "Start" to activate the appropriate spooler, if necessary.

• Click "Configure" to define a unique spooler name in the text input field, if necessary. Then click "OK" to return to the dialog "EFI Spooler".

4. Close the dialog "EFI Spooler".

Client computer:

1. Mac OS X 10.4:

• In System Preferences, select "Print & Fax".

• On the "Printing" tab, click "+".

• In the dialog "Printer Browser", click "More Printers".

Mac OS X 10.3:


• Click "Set Up Printers" to display the dialog "Printer List".

• Click "Add".

2. From the printer model pop-up menu, select "Other".

3. Highlight "EFISoftwarePrinter". This is the name defined in the dialog "EFI Spooler" on the server computer.

4. Click "Add".


2.2.3 Windows server/Macintosh OS 9 und OS X Classic Mode client

Server computer:

3. From the "View" menu of EFI Designer Edition, choose "EFI Spooler" and check that the AppleTalk spooler is active.

4. Close the dialog “EFI Spooler”.

Client computer:

1. Insert the Macintosh CD "EFI Designer Edition" into the CD-ROM drive and display the contents of the CD.

2. Double-click the "PPD for MacOS 9" icon and copy the EFISoftwarePrinter.ppd to the following location on the hard disk of the computer on which the application is installed: System extensions:Printer descriptions.

3. Open the "Chooser".

4. Make sure that AppleTalk is active.

5. Highlight a LaserWriter printer. A list of PostScript printers appears.

6. Highlight the spooler name of your printer. This is the name defined in the dialog "EFI Spooler" on the Server computer.

7. Click "Create". A dialog for selecting a PPD for your printer opens.

8. Double-click the PPD "EFISoftwarePrinter.ppd".

9. Close the "Chooser".


2.2.4 Macintosh server/Windows client

Server computer:



2. Open "System Preferences" and click "EFI Spooler" in "Other". The dialog "EFI Spooler" opens.

3. Check that the TCP spooler is active.





5. Make sure that printer sharing is activated. To activate printer sharing, select "Sharing" in System Preferences. Then select "Printer Sharing" on the "Services" tab.

Client computer:

1. Insert the Macintosh CD "EFI Designer Edition" into the CD-ROM drive.

2. Open the Control Panel and select "Printers and Faxes" (Windows XP) or "Printer" (Windows 2000/2003).

3. Select "Add a printer" and click "Next".

4. Select the radio button for adding a network printer and click "Next".

5. Select the radio button for connecting to a printer on the Internet or on a home or office network.

6. Fill in the text input field URL by entering the IP address of the Macintosh server computer and the port number 631.

For example: http://xx.xxx.xx.x:631/printers/EFISoftwarePrinter (where xx.xxx.xx.x stands for the IP address of the Macintosh computer on which EFI Designer Edition is installed

7. Click "Next".

8. Click "Have Disk" and browse to the CD.

9. Open the PPD folder.

10. Open the folder for your operating system and double-click on the file *.inf to select it.

11. Follow the on-screen instructions to proceed with the printer driver installation.



2.2.5 Macintosh OS X server/Macintosh OS X client

Server computer:


2. Open "System Preferences". In “Other”, click "EFI Spooler". The dialog "EFI Spooler" opens.

3. Check that the AppleTalk spooler is active.





5. Make sure that printer sharing is activated. To activate printer sharing, select "Sharing" in System Preferences. Then select "Printer Sharing" on the "Services" tab.

Client computer:

1. Mac OS X 10.4


• On the "Printing" tab, click "+".

• In the dialog "Printer Browser", click "More Printers".

Mac OS X 10.3:


• Click "Set Up Printers" to display the dialog "Printer List".

• Click "Add".

2. Make sure that "EFISoftwarePrinter" (or the name defined in the dialog "EFI Spooler" on the server computer) is displayed in the list.

Mac OS X 10.4:

Network printers are listed on the "Sharing" tab.

Mac OS X 10.3:

Network printers are listed in a separate area. Click "Shared Printers" to display them.

1. Insert the Macintosh CD "EFI Designer Edition" into the CD-ROM drive and display the contents of the CD.

2. Double-click the "PPD for MacOS 9" icon and copy the EFISoftwarePrinter.ppd to the following location on the hard disk of the computer on which the application is installed: System extensions:Printer descriptions.

3. Open the "Chooser".

4. Make sure that AppleTalk is active.

5. Highlight a LaserWriter printer. A list of PostScript printers appears.

6. Highlight the spooler name of your printer. This is the name defined in the dialog "EFI Spooler" on the Server computer.

7. Click "Create". A dialog for selecting a PPD for your printer opens.

8. Double-click the PPD "EFI Software Printer.ppd".

9. Close the "Chooser".

EFI Designer Edition is added to the list of available printers and can be selected in your application

2.3 Printing from an applicationTo print from an application to EFI Designer Edition, proceed as follows:

1. Make sure that EFI Designer Edition is set up correctly as a virtual printer. Refer to the section “Setting up EFI Designer Edition as a virtual printer” on page 2-3 for further information.

2. Start EFI Designer Edition.

3. Open the image file in the application in which it was created and select the print command from the "File" menu. The "Print" dialog opens.

4. From the pop-up menu, select "EFISoftwarePrinter" (Macintosh) or "EFI Designer Edition" (Windows) as the printer, and make any desired settings. Then click "OK". Your print job is sent to EFI Designer Edition and is displayed in the job list.

2.4 Printing via hotfolderEFI Designer Edition also lets you print via a hotfolder. A hotfolder enables users, who do not have EFI Designer Edition installed on their computers, to copy print jobs to a centrally located folder on the network. All jobs placed in the defined hotfolder are loaded in EFI Designer Edition according to the settings defined in the “General” pane.

Refer to the section “Hotfolder” on page 3-4 for further information.

If the software is not running when you submit a print job, job processing will commence automatically as soon as you start EFI Designer Edition.

Please note the following:

When printing directly from an application on roll paper or a user-defined paper size, the printable paper length is restricted to slightly less than two meters. To overcome the problem, try using the drag-and-drop function to load your print job directly in EFI Designer Edition. In this case the maximum printable paper length is approximately 15 meters.


3 User interfaceThis chapter describes all the settings available in EFI Designer Edition.

3.1 ToolbarThe toolbar contains the following buttons:

AddClick this button to load a file in the job list. A blue frame indicates the current position of the cursor in the program window. If the cursor is positioned in the lower section of the program window when you click this button, a nesting will be created; otherwise a job will be added to the job list.

NestingClick this button to create a nesting. A nesting is a collection of selected images that are printed out as a single print job, whereby as many images as possible are placed on each sheet of paper.

DeleteClick this button to delete a selected job or nesting.

PrintClick this button to start printing.

PreviewClick this button to calculate and display a print preview of a selected job.

StopClick this button to stop job processing of all currently selected jobs.

In the Macintosh version of the software, the tool buttons are not displayed by default in the toolbar. However, you can customize the appearance of the toolbar to suit your own particular needs.

To customize the toolbar, refer to the section “View menu” on page 3-25.

3.2 Preferences dialogThe settings you make in the "Preferences" dialog are applied to all jobs that are subsequently loaded in EFI Designer Edition. They remain valid until you make any changes.

To access the "Preferences" dialog:

• In the toolbar, click the "Preferences" button or

• From the "EFI Designer Edition" menu (Macintosh), select "Preferences" or

• From the "View" menu (Windows), select "Preferences".

Spot ColorClick this button to start EFI Color Editor — a tool for defining and managing spot colors.

LinearizeClick this button to start EFI Ink Assistant — a tool for ensuring the consistency of your printer’s color reproduction.

It is not possible to customize the toolbar if you are using the Windows version of the software.

Changed “Preference” settings are not automatically applied to jobs already loaded in EFI Designer Edition. Refer to the section “Info pane” on page 3-20 for further details.


The "Preferences" dialog consists of six panes. These are described in the following sections.

There are three buttons at the bottom of each pane:

3.2.1 General paneThe settings you make in this pane define the way your jobs are handled in the workflow.

Workflow

The workflow settings define how and when your jobs will be processed. The following options are available:

Automatic start printing after spooling

If you select this option, your job will be printed when spooling has been completed. This setting is recommended if you are processing high-volume data, e.g. with a large number of images, or if you are running other applications in the foreground.

If this option is not selected, your job will be loaded but not processed.

Automatic deletion of spooled jobs after printing

If you select this option, you can specify how many weeks, days or hours after printing your jobs will be deleted from EFI Designer Edition. Entering a "0" means that your jobs will be deleted immediately after printing.

Watch hotfolder

If you select this option, EFI Designer Edition will monitor the defined hotfolder and automatically load any incoming files in EFI Designer Edition for processing. Select this checkbox and navigate to the hotfolder you want to be monitored.

If this option is not selected and files are placed in a defined hotfolder, they will not be automatically loaded.

Reset SettingsClick this button to return all settings to their default values.

Save PrefsClick this button to save your individual settings as a *.psf file. A dialog opens in which you are prompted to define a name and a location for the settings file.

Load PrefsClick this button to restore previously saved settings. Navigate to the location where your settings file is saved. Select the file and click "Open" to load it.

It is important to ensure that all the required files (media profiles, linearization files, etc.) are available when restoring preferences. If any files are missing, an error message will be displayed when you try to load the settings file.

This option does not apply to jobs that are loaded manually, e.g. jobs that are loaded via the "Load" button or by drag and drop.


RIP and print on the fly

If you select this option, your print jobs will start printing immediately data is received, i.e. before job processing has been fully completed.

Work folder

All temporary files created during job processing in EFI Designer Edition are automatically saved to the subfolder "Work".

By default, the "Work" folder is located in the folder where EFI Designer Edition is installed. However, you can define a new location by clicking "Select" and navigating to your chosen folder. When you define a folder, a new "Work" folder is automatically created as a subfolder.

Hotfolder

A hotfolder enables users, who do not have EFI Designer Edition installed on their computers, to copy print jobs to a centrally located folder on the network. All jobs placed in the defined hotfolder are loaded in EFI Designer Edition according to the settings made in this pane.

Path

To define a hotfolder, click "Select" and navigate to your chosen folder.

Check interval

This setting determines how often EFI Designer Edition will monitor the hotfolder for new files, providing the “Watch hotfolder” checkbox is selected. Enter the chosen time period in seconds in the text input field.

System of measurement

This setting defines which system of measurement is used in EFI Designer Edition.

If you select the option "Use default system of measurement from OS", EFI Designer Edition will use the system of measurement set up in the operating system. To use a different system of measurement, select the appropriate radio button and choose mm, cm or inch from the pop-up menu.

Please be aware that simultaneous processing and printing may cause the printer to pause from time to time. This can lead to undesireable stripes on the printout.

The "Work" folder contains a number of subfolders for saving previews, profiles, etc.

Please note that you must have write permissions to the "Work" folder in order to process jobs.

Make sure that you select the “Watch hotfolder” option in this pane; otherwise your defined hotfolder will not be monitored and jobs will not be automatically loaded.


3.2.2 Layout paneIn this pane you define the paper orientation and the output size of your image.

Orientation

Rotate

Enable this checkbox and select an angle of rotation from the pop-up menu. The pictogram illustrates the effect of the chosen setting.

Mirror

Enable this checkbox and select a setting from the pop-up menu to flip your image along the horizontal or vertical axis. The pictogram illustrates the effect of the chosen setting.

Alignment

Use the checkboxes "Horizontal" and "Vertical" to define where your output image will be positioned on the page. This setting is applied relative to the printable area of the page, not to the edges of the paper. The default setting is top left.

Printer settings

This area displays the paper size settings you defined in the "Printer" pane and the resolution for the print quality you set in the "Color" pane.

Scaling

Choose how your print job will be positioned on the paper. The pictogram illustrates the effect of the chosen setting. The following settings are available:

Do not fit

With this setting, your image is printed in its original size. An error message will be displayed to warn you if it will not fit fully on the paper.

Fit to paper size

With this setting, your image is scaled — either up or down — so that either the height or the width of your image is adjusted to the printable height or width of the paper.

Please note that vertical alignment is only possible when single-sheet paper is selected on the "Printer" pane. If roll paper is inserted in the printer, the image will be aligned relative to the height of the selected paper size and not to the end of the roll of paper.


Fit to paper width

With this setting, your image is scaled horizontally so that the width of your image is adjusted to the printable width of the paper.

Fit to paper height

With this setting, your image is scaled vertically so that the height of your image is adjusted to the printable height of the paper.

Fit percentually

With this setting, you can define an enlargement or reduction factor for your image. In this case, the width and height of your image are scaled proportionally. A value of more than 100 increases the size of your image, whereas a value of less than 100 decreases the image size.

Process control

Here you select to print out a job ticket or a control strip with your print job.

Print job ticket

A job ticket contains information pertinent to the print job. It lets you know which settings were applied to achieve the print result, e.g. printer model, profiles, rendering intents, print resolution, scaling factor. Select this checkbox to print a job ticket.

Print control strip

A control strip consists of one or more rows of different color patches which are used to obtain color values using a spectrophotometer, a special type of measuring device. Select this checkbox to print a control strip.

You can use one of the control strips provided with EFI Designer Edition or a control strip of your choice. You will find the available control strips in the "Control Strip" folder of the EFI installation folder. EFI Designer Edition can process all supported file formats except separated files; there is no size restriction. Click "Select" and navigate to the folder with your control strip.

Job tickets are aligned with the left edge of the image, whereas control strips are printed right justified. If job ticket and control strip overlap, the job ticket is cropped.

With this setting, the height of your image may be truncated.

By creating a preview of your job, you can check whether your image fits fully on the selected paper size.

With this setting, the width of your image may be truncated.

By creating a preview of your job, you can check whether your image fits fully on the selected paper size.


However, if space is available to the right of the image, the control strip will be aligned with the right edge of the sheet to enable both job ticket and control strip to be printed.

In a nesting, job tickets and control strips can be printed for each individual image.

3.2.3 Color paneThe settings you make in this pane directly affect the color reproduction of your jobs.

Color output preset

The pop-up menu contains a number of predefined settings for different workflow environments. Each of the available presets is intended for a specific workflow scenario. To achieve good quality color results, it is important that you select a color output preset that is suitable for your source files.

HP CMYK Plus

This setting is only available when you select a printer that supports this particular feature.

Use this setting for CMYK images only. Loading an RGB image will result in non-accurate color reproduction because of the conversion to the much smaller CMYK color gamut.

When converting a source RGB image to printable CMYK colors, some colors are no longer accessible, as the range of colors that is reproducible on a printing press is much smaller than that of typical RGB devices. If such a press CMYK file is printed using HP CMYK plus technology, CMYK colors are adapted to the range of colors that the chosen output device is able to reproduce, while preserving original hues and the appearance of neutrals and skin tones.

A control strip or a job ticket will not be printed if the image takes up the whole area of paper. In this case, an appropriate error message is displayed in the status column of the program window.

The chapter “Color management” on page 4-1 is an easy-to-understand introduction to the complex topic of color management. It explains why paper and image profiles are necessary and describes the profiles provided with EFI Designer Edition.

Please note that applying the wrong color output preset to your print job may result in severe color distortion.


Furthermore, HP CMYK Plus technology also preserves the black channel, so black-only text remains black-only. The result is a color output consistent with the original press appearance, but with a recovered color range and vibrancy.

No color management (native)

With this color output preset, no profiles are applied during job processing. As no color management takes place, the results represent the true color quality of your printer. This setting is necessary if you wish to create your own media profiles. It can also be used to output CMYK images, but not RGB or Gray data.

Photo

When you select "Photo" from the pop-up menu, your image data is processed for output on the selected printer. This setting makes full use of the available color gamut of the output device and produces vivid images in photo quality.

Use this setting for RGB images to ensure that vivid colors are correctly reproduced. All other color output presets convert to the much smaller CMYK color gamut, resulting in non-accurate color output of RGB files.

This setting is also suitable for processing CMYK or grayscale jobs, in which all the objects/images contain embedded profiles.

Proofing

When you select "Proofing" from the pop-up menu, your image data is processed to simulate output on a professional printing press. This setting therefore reproduces the reduced CMYK color gamut of a printing press. RGB or CMYK simulation profiles can be selected in order to achieve the best possible results.

Use this setting for CMYK images to simulate the color reproduction that will later be achieved on a printing press.

Please note the following when applying HP CMYK Plus technology:

• It is not possible to choose a CMYK input profile or any kind of rendering intent. However, if you print non-CMYK data using HP CMYK Plus technology, the displayed but grayed out CMYK simulation profile will still be applied during color space conversion.

• The advanced settings are not available.

• Embedded profiles are ignored in order to ensures that the biggest possible color gamut of the printer is applied. Refer to “HP CMYK Plus” on page 4-7 for further information on which profiles are used in an HP CMYK Plus workflow.


Save preset

The predefined color output presets provide basic settings for a specific type of workflow environment. However, you can also create and save your own presets and assign specific profiles and rendering intents to be used. To create a preset, first make the required settings in this pane, then click "Save Preset" and define a name for your group of settings. The name you have chosen is added to the list of available color output presets.

Delete Preset

To delete a user-defined preset, select it from the pop-up menu and then click "Delete Preset". Please note that it is not possible to delete either the factory presets or any preset that is applied to a print job listed in the job list.

EFI profiles, ColorSync (Macintosh only)

You can choose between:

EFI profiles

Select this radio button to use image profiles selected in EFI Designer Edition.

ColorSync

Select this radio button to use the ColorSync image profiles you have selected in "System Preferences" of your Macintosh.

Image profiles

Here you select your image profiles and rendering intents for the color spaces RGB, Gray, CMYK and Multicolor.

Image profiles describe the color reproduction properties of the printer you wish to simulate on your inkjet printer.

In order to select image profiles, color management must be activated.

A wide range of image CMYK, RGB and L*a*b* profiles is installed with EFI Designer Edition. You will find these in the folder "Profiles:Reference" EFI does not provide multicolor profiles with the software. However, you can use your own. To do so, click “Add Profile” and navigate to the profile.

If you make changes to a previously defined preset, the original preset will be overwritten when you click "Save Preset".

These settings can be made by Macintosh users only. This is because ColorSync profiles are not available to Windows users and "EFI profiles" are therefore automatically selected by default.

It is not possible to select an L*a*b* image profile in EFI Designer Edition. However, one L*a*b* profile is installed by default with your software. It is automatically applied when L*a*b* data is received, provided that color management is activated.

If you performed a full program installation, you will find additional image profiles in the "Goodies" folder.


Add Profile

If you prefer to use your own image profiles, maybe those provided by your printing company, you can do so by clicking "Add profile" and navigating to the appropriate file.

Delete Profile

You can delete a profile by clicking this button and navigating to the appropriate file. Deleted files are removed from the list and can, therefore, no longer be selected. However, they are not physically deleted and can be added to the list again at any time, if required.

Rendering intents

The following rendering intents are available:

• Perceptual

• Relative colorimetric (no paper white)

• Saturated

• Absolute colorimetric (paper white)

The different rendering intents and when to use each are described in detail in the section “Rendering intents” on page 4-3.

Advanced (not available for HP CMYK Plus)

When you click "Advanced", a dialog opens which provides additional settings.

Use embedded profiles

EFI Designer Edition supports object-oriented color management. With this setting you can choose whether or not to apply an image profile embedded in your document.

This feature thus makes it possible to process correctly PDF/X1, PDF/X1a, PDF/X3, EPS, JPEG and Tiff files with embedded image profiles.

Macintosh users must first select the radio button "EFI profiles".

The rendering intents you select here can be applied to either EFI or Colorsync profiles.

Please note: Which advanced settings are available, depends on the color output preset you have selected. For example, “Gray variation” is disabled for proofing workflows.

Source profiles embedded in individual images of a document are always taken into account and cannot be deactivated. Therefore, in a print job comprising different images, each image will automatically be processed using an appropriate profile for its particular color space.

However, please note that this does not apply to rendering intents. Only rendering intents selected in EFI Designer Edition are used.


Black point compensation

This setting corrects the color conversion of black into the CMYK color space. It is only available if either of the rendering intents "relative colorimetric" or "absolute colorimetric" is selected.

It is helpful to use black point compensation if the black point of the source color space strongly differs from that of the target color space. If the black point of the source color space is brighter, colors appear washed out. If the black point of the source color space is darker, shadow details are lost.

Use black inks only

With this setting, you can specify that any objects that have been defined as pure black will be printed using black ink only.

If you choose "text and images", all dots with at least 1% K will be printed using black ink only.

If you choose "text only", all dots with at least 99% K will be printed using black in only.

If you select "never", black areas will be composed of the available CMYK inks.

Print RGB objects

Select this checkbox to determine whether your job file contains RGB images. If EFI Designer Edition detects RGB data, the images can be printed in color, grayscales or a vivid shade of orange.

Output optimized for

This setting optimizes the print quality of either CMYK or RGB images in PS, PDF or EPS format. RGB is selected by default if you are working with a photo color output preset. For proofing, CMYK is the default setting. If your print job contains a mixture of RGB and CMYK images, select the color space which is most important to you.

Use L*a*b* correction profile

This setting enables you to load an optimization profile that has been created with the Color Manager Option of the software EFI XF. L*a*b* correction files have the extension .3cc and provide more precise printer adjustment.

Activating black point compensation may cause gray shades. However, this setting can be applied usefully to darker source black points.

Please be aware of the following:

• This setting is disabled if no L*a*b* correction files are available.

• In order to select an L*a*b* correction file from the pop-up menu, you must first copy it to the folder EFI Designer Edition\Profiles\Balance.

• L*a*b* correction files will only be applied to proofing workflows.


Gray variation

EFI Designer Edition provides five different gray tints for black and white output - from yellowish (very warm) to bluish black (very cold). Select the checkbox and move the slider bar to the required position.

Media profiles (output)

Paper name

From the pop-up menu, select the name of the paper you are printing on.

Print quality

From the pop-up menu, select the print quality and resolution. Which settings are available depends on the printer model you are using.

Add Paper

This button starts EFI Profile Connector — a tool that enables you to implement your own media profiles in EFI Designer Edition. Refer to the chapter “EFI Profile Connector” on page 8-1 for further information.

3.2.4 Printer paneWith the settings in this pane, you establish a connection to your printer and define your printer settings.

Some printers have a feature which automatically transmits information about the type of paper loaded in the printer to the software.

If you have such a printer, EFI Designer Edition will make the appropriate paper setting for you. Please be aware that if you try and override this setting by making changes that do not match the type of paper inserted in the printer, a warning message will appear when you submit a print job.

All media profiles MUST be located in the "Profiles" folder of EFI Designer Edition. Otherwise they will not be detected. Therefore, if you are implementing customized media profiles, make sure these are copied to the "Profiles" folder. See the chapter “EFI Profile Connector” on page 8-1 for further information.

In order to set up a connection between your printer and EFI Designer Edition, your printer must be switched on.

Many of the settings described in this section are printer-dependent. If your printer does not support a certain function, the setting will not be available.


Active printer

Connection

Shows details of the currently selected printer.

Available printers

Select the type of printer connection.

• If your printer is connected locally to the USB port, choose the name of your printer from the pop-up menu.

• If you are printing to a printer that has been set up as a system printer, select the printer name like you would select a locally connected printer.

• If you are printing to a network printer that supports the network protocol Bonjour, select the printer name like you would a locally connected printer. The IP address is automatically detected.

• If you are printing to a network printer, choose "TCP/IP" from the pop-up menu. In this case, you must also enter the IP address and the port number in the appropriate text input fields.

Manufacturer

Select your printer manufacturer from the pop-up menu.

Model

Select your printer model from the pop-up menu.

Test

Click "Test" to check that the connection to the printer has been properly established. If you receive an error message, consult your system administrator for advice.

Bonjour is a standard component of Mac OS X operating systems. Windows users can download the Bonjour software from the Apple website.

The printer’s TCP/IP address may be a defined name or a series of numbers, e.g. 10.1.149.33. Ask your system administrator if you are not sure of your printer’s TCP/IP address or port number.

Most printers support RAW printing to port 9100. However, please note that this setting depends on the network settings made at the printer and may, therefore, be different.

This setting is predefined if your printer is connected via USB.

Printer settings

Paper

Click the "Paper" tab to select the size and source of the paper inserted in your printer.

If your paper size is not listed, you can define a customized paper size on this pane. Select "User-defined" in the "Paper size" pop-up menu and enter the width and height of your paper in the text input fields.

Then click "Add" and define a name for your paper. Click "OK" to return to the "Paper" pane. Your customized paper is now selected in the list of available paper sizes.

To make modifications to your customized paper size, select it in the pop-up menu and click "Edit".

To delete a customized paper size, select it in the pop-up menu and click "Delete".

• Autocut

If your printer supports roll paper and you wish the paper to be cut automatically after printing, select the "Autocut" checkbox.

If the autocut setting is selected and you cancel a print job, the paper will be fed until the length of the print job has been reached and then cut. This problem can be avoided if you cancel the print job before the print data is received by the printer.

• Borderless

If your printer supports borderless printing, you can activate or deactivate this option using the "Borderless" checkbox. Please note that this feature is only available for specific paper sizes.

If this setting is used in conjunction with a scaling factor, the output is scaled to the size of the print medium.

EFI Designer Edition uses the default system of measurement set up in the operating system — centimeters, millimeters or inches. However, you may change this setting if you wish. Refer to the section“System of measurement” on page 3-4 for further details.

User-defined paper sizes are displayed with a "+" sign to the left of the paper name.

This option is only displayed if your printer supports roll paper. To print on roll paper, you must make sure that a roll paper holder is installed. Refer to your printer manual for further details.

Please note the following:

• If no scaling factor is selected and the image is bigger than the size of the print medium, clipping will occur.

• If the image is smaller than the size of the print medium, the output will have a border.


• Wait dry time

If your printer supports this feature, the checkbox is selected by default.

For many print quality/paper combinations, it takes longer than expected before the printout is dry enough to not be smeared by paper placed on top of it.

Selecting this feature ensures that you achieve high-quality printouts.

• Length correction

This feature lets you correct the length of the output image.

If you select this checkbox, the paper length information saved to the media profile is applied to your print jobs.

However, if you discover that your printed image length is longer or shorter than it should be, deselect this checkbox. You can then modify the output length at your printer’s control panel.

Printer

Click the "Printer" tab to make printer-specific settings.

• Linearization

This pane lets you select or remove a printer linearization file.

If you have performed a visual printer linearization using EFI Ink Assistant in order to correct the color reproduction of your printer, you must load the printer linearization file separately. Printer linearization files are saved in vcc format.

For further information on performing a visual printer linearization, refer to chapter “EFI Ink Assistant” on page 7-1.

• Duplex

If you wish to print on both sides of your paper, select the "Duplex" checkbox. Then specify the binding edge of your document — top or left.

Calibration

Click the "Calibration" tab to ensure that the color reproduction of your printer remains constant.

This pane is only available if your printer is equipped with an internal color sensor and an automatic closed-loop color feature.

This option is only displayed if your printer supports a function for compensating for inconsistencies in the length of your printed images.

This option is only displayed if your printer supports duplex printing. To print on both sides of the paper, you must have a duplex unit installed. Refer to your printer manual for further details.


The calibration system ensures consistent color reproduction — from one print to another as well as between two printers of the same model — irrespective of system variables such as ink level, environment conditions and life of the print head.

Closed-loop color calibration is based on the media type, ink type, resolution, print mode and halftoning method used.

Closed-loop color calibration does not, however, ensure accurate color, which can only be obtained via printer profiling and color management, nor does it ensure color matching from one configuration to another. As such, it is comparable to traditional densitometry-based methods of process control used for commercial printing presses.

To calibrate your printer and return it to its original state, proceed as follows:

Click "New" to print out a calibration chart.

A job with the name "HP_CLC_xxx_target.eps" appears in the job list and is automatically processed.

After processing, a calibration chart is output. As soon as it has been printed, the paper is automatically fed back into the printer and the color values of the color patches are measured. Based on the results, EFI Designer Edition will calibrate your printer and display details in the "Calibration" pane.

As each calibration process is valid only for the currently selected settings for paper type and resolution, you will need to perform separate calibrations for each different combination of settings you use.

The results of the calibration are automatically assigned to the appropriate media profile. The "Use calibration" checkbox lets you determine whether the printer calibration should be applied or ignored during printing.

If you wish to calibrate your printer at regular intervals, you can set EFI Designer Edition to send you a reminder. To do this, select the checkbox "Remind me" and enter the desired time period in days, weeks or months. EFI Designer Edition will automatically remind you the first time you select that particular combination of settings after the defined time period has elapsed.

EFI Designer Edition also provides you with a tool with which you can further finetune the color reproduction of your printer. You will find detailed information on how to perform a visual printer linearization in the chapter “EFI Ink Assistant” on page 7-1.

When you click "New", any settings you have just made in the "Preferences" pane are automatically saved.

Please note that the calibration process will always be performed for the currently selected combination of settings for paper type and resolution. Therefore, make sure to check your printer settings before clicking "New".

Some printers perform an internal calibration. In this case, no CLC print job appears in the job list.


3.2.5 Spot Colors paneThe settings in this pane determine how EFI Designer Edition handles spot colors.

EFI Designer Edition manages spot colors in two different tables: an internal table, which ensures the reproduction of a wide variety of standard, predefined spot colors, and an external table for user-defined spot colors in CMYK and L*a*b* format. Only external spot color tables can be loaded and edited in EFI Designer Edition.

You will find detailed information on managing spot colors in EFI Designer Edition in the chapter “EFI Color Editor” on page 6-1.

Settings

Print unknown spot colors as bright orange

Select this option to replace spot colors that are not defined in the spot color tables with a distinctive shade of orange.

Warn if unknown spot colors are found

Select this option to search for spot colors before your job is processed. If EFI Designer Edition detects unknown spot colors, a warning message is displayed and your job will not be processed. This setting saves you processing a file containing unknown spot colors unnecessarily.

In-RIP separation

If your print file already contains RIP settings, e.g. from an external RIP or from a DTP program, these can be applied during job processing. This function supports both CMYK and spot colors.

• Enable

With this setting, all files are processed using the separated files of the spot colors, as defined in the external RIP or DTP program. If EFI Designer Edition cannot detect the separated files or if they cannot be processed, the job will be printed as composite.

• Disable

With this setting, the separated files created in the external RIP or DTP program are ignored. Spot colors are printed as composite or using the equivalent CMYK values.

PostScript files must contain not only details about color separations (process colors and spot colors), they also require start code information. This start code may be missing from PostScript files created by certain types of RIPs. In this case, the in-RIP information cannot be properly interpreted and the file will be output as composite.


PANTONE® Emulation

HP Professional PANTONE Emulation

This option is selected by default if your printer supports the HP Professional PANTONE emulation. If you are printing to a printer which does not support this particular feature, the setting is not available.

When this setting is activated, all PANTONE values in the print job are converted directly to CMYK values for output. All other non-PANTONE colors are subject to EFI Designer Edition’s usual color management.

When using HP Professional PANTONE Emulation, PANTONE solid colors that lie within the printing system’s color gamut will be matched. Colors that lie outside the color gamut will be simulated so as to achieve the visually closest match.

If this setting is selected, "HP PPE" is displayed in the job ticket to indicate the type of color management that has taken place.

Spot color file (overwrites any other spot color definition)

Select

Click "Select" to load the file in which your spot color definitions are saved. Spot color tables created in EFI products and saved in bct format are supported.

Remove

Click "Remove" to deselect the loaded file.

High-end features

Apply overprint preview

Select this checkbox to simulate an overprint of a composite file.

Normally, when two areas of different colors overlap, there is a knock-out effect. This function makes areas of overlapping color visible.

3.2.6 Nesting paneWith the settings in this pane, you specify how you wish your image files to be positioned in a nesting. You will find further information on working with nestings in the section “Creating a nesting” on page 5-1.

Position

Optimal space usage

With this setting, image files are positioned so that a minimum of paper is used.

Optimal cutting edges

With this setting, images are aligned so that they can be cut out with as few cuts as possible.

Please note that the overprint function can be applied to CMYK composite files only. It is not possible to create an overprint of spot colors.


Rotation

Images may be rotated during positioning

By activating this checkbox, you specify that images may be rotated to reduce paper consumption.

Size

Scale all images to

If you activate this checkbox, you can specify a uniform output size for all images on a nesting. Choose from a list of default sizes

Alternatively, to create a customized scaling size click "Add" and enter the required dimensions in the text input fields.

Then click "OK" to return to the "Nesting" pane. Your customized size is now selected in the list.

The sides of images are always scaled proportionally, i.e. the same scaling factor is applied to both width and height. Depending on the original image format, this may mean that images are displayed in the nesting with a white margin either top and bottom or to the left and right.

To delete a customized image size, select it in the pop-up menu and click "Remove".

Place all images as landscape

If you activate this checkbox, all images on the nesting are positioned in landscape format. Any images in portrait format are automatically rotated by 90°. When this checkbox is activated, the option "Images may be rotated during positioning" is dimmed and cannot be selected.

Border

Draw border around images

If you activate this checkbox, your images are printed with a thin black border.

Only image sizes that will fit on the currently selected paper size are listed.

EFI Designer Edition uses the default system of measurement set up in the operating system — centimeters, millimeters or inches. However, you may change this setting if you wish. Refer to the section “System of measurement” on page 3-4 for further details.

Please note that the higher scaling factor is always applied to the longest side of an image.

User-defined image sizes are preceded by a plus sign. Please note that it is not possible to delete the default sizes.


3.3 Job settings drawerWhereas the settings you make in the "Preferences" dialog are applied to all jobs that are loaded in EFI Designer Edition, the settings you make in the "Job settings" drawer are job-specific.

To access the "Job settings" drawer:

• double-click a job in the job list or

• select a job in the job list and click the "Open job settings drawer" button at the bottom of the program window.

The "Job settings" drawer consists of three panes: "Info", "Color" and "Print". The settings you make on these panes are very similar to the general settings you make in the "Preferences" dialog. Click the appropriate tab to access the individual panes.

3.3.1 Info paneIn this pane, you define the format and color separations for your job.

Preview

The window displays a preview of a selected job or nesting. The preview window shows not only the image but also its position within the document.

To create a preview, highlight a print job in the job list or nesting area and click "Preview" in the toolbar.

If you make job settings, you will need to refresh the preview in order to see the effect of the changes you have made.

If you double-click on the preview, an enlarged view is opened in the default graphics application. You can edit an enlarged preview using the tools available in that application.

Left/right arrows

The left/right arrowslet youscroll backward and forward through a multi-page document.

Apply Preferences

When you make settings in the “Preferences” dialog, preloaded print jobs are initially unaffected by the changes. The button “Apply Preferences” enables you to apply changed “Preference” settings to jos already loaded in EFI Designer Edition. You will need to refresh the preview in order to see the effect of the changes you have made.


Set Format

Click this button to open a sheet for defining the orientation and the output size of your image.

Job settings

This area displays the size and resolution of your image. To view this information, you must first create a preview or start job processing.

Printer settings

This area displays the dimensions of the printable area of the currently selected paper size and the printer resolution. You can change the printer settings in the "Color" pane and "Print" pane, if required.

Orientation

The orientation settings are identical to the setting found in the "Preferences" dialog. Refer to the section “Layout pane” on page 3-5 for further information.

Scaling

This setting is identical to the setting found in the "Preferences" dialog. Refer to the section “Layout pane” on page 3-5 for further information.

Process control

The process control settings are identical to the settings found in the “Preferences” dialog. Refer to the section “Layout pane” on page 3-5 for further information.

Spot Colors

Create a preview and then click this button to open a sheet for editing the spot color settings contained in your job.

Spot colors

This area displays information about the color separations contained in each page of your job. You can click "Check Spot Colors" to check for spot colors in your print job. EFI Designer Edition displays defined spot colors with a check mark and indicates undefined spot colors by a question mark.

Settings

In this area you make settings that affect the spot colors in your job.

• Select

Click this button to load a spot color table. Spot color tables created in EFI products and saved in bct format are supported.

• Remove

Click this button to remove a selected spot color table. This button is dimmed if no spot color file is selected.


• Preferences

Click this button to open a sheet for making spot color settings.

• Check Spot Colors

Create a preview and then click this button to check whether EFI Designer Edition recognizes the spot colors in your job.

With this setting you can check whether your spot colors will be processed correctly without the need to print your job.

By selecting a spot color table or by replacing undefined spot colors, you can influence how spot colors will be processed.

The following table illustrates how you can use different combinations of settings to determine how your spot colors are handled.

Refer to the section “Spot Colors pane” on page 3-17 for detailed information about these settings.

You will find the setting for selecting a spot color file in this pane.

The setting "Print unknown spot colors as bright orange" can be made by clicking "Preferences" in this pane.

Spot colors that are not recognized are indicated by a question mark in the "Ok" column.

In order for your spot colors to be correctly recognized, adjust the following settings as appropriate:

— Select a spot color file by clicking "Select" and navigating to the spot color table with your defined spot colors.

— Define your undefined spot colors in EFI Color Editor.

— Click "Preferences" and select "Print unknown spot colors as bright orange". In this case, any spot colors will be printed in a distinctive shade of orange.

• Edit Spot Colors

Create a preview and then click this button to start EFI Color Editor and define undetected spot colors.

If you have selected a spot color file, this file will be automatically opened in EFI Color Editor with the undefined spot colors added to the list. If you have not selected a spot color file, EFI Color Editor will create a new file containing the undefined spot colors.

3.3.2 Color paneThe settings you make in this pane directly affect the color reproduction of your jobs.

The settings are identical to the settings found in the "Preferences" dialog. Refer to the section “Color pane” on page 3-7 for further information.

Refer to the chapter “EFI Color Editor” on page 6-1 for information on how to define spot colors in EFI Color Editor.

EFI Color Editor can only be started in this way if the selected file contains undefined spot colors.

Refer to the section “Defining spot colors” on page 6-4 for information on how to define spot colors in EFI Color Editor.

The chapter “Color management” on page 4-1 is an easy-to-understand introduction to the complex topic of color management. It explains why paper and image profiles are necessary and describes the profiles provided with EFI Designer Edition.


3.3.3 Print paneIn this pane, you define the print settings for your job.

Selected printer

Shows details of the currently selected printer.

Paper size

Select the size of the paper inserted in your printer from the pop-up menu.

Paper source

Select the source of the paper inserted in your printer from the pop-up menu.

Print range

• All pages

Select this radio button to print all the pages of your job. This is the default setting.

• From/to

Select this radio button to print a range of pages from your job. Enter the numbers of the first and last pages to be printed in the text input fields.

• Number of copies

Enter the number of copies of your job you wish to print.

• Printer settings

If your printer supports either of the features "Autocut", "Wait dry time" or “Borderless”, you can activate the appropriate setting in this pane. Refer to the section “Printer settings” on page 3-14 for further information, if required.

EFI Designer Edition menu

About EFI Designer Edition

Displays a dialog with details of your program version.

License

Opens a dialog for registering EFI Designer Edition. If you do not register your product, the software will run in demo mode for a limited period of thirty days. Refer to the printed booklet for further information on licensing the software.

Outputting a print job involves two separate RIP processes: the first is performed in EFI Designer Edition, the second during printing.

Even when a page range is selected, the whole document is RIPed in EFI Designer Edition. However, only the selected pages are submitted to the printer for output.


Preferences

Opens the "Preferences" dialog in which you make general settings that are applied to all jobs you subsequently load in EFI Designer Edition.

Quit EFI Designer Edition

Exits EFI Designer Edition.

JobList menu

Add Jobs

Opens the "JobList" sheet in which you can select a file to be loaded in EFI Designer Edition.

Create Nesting

Creates a nesting of one or more job files selected in the job list.

Delete Job

Deletes a selected job or nesting.

Print Job

Starts processing a job selected in the job list.

Calculate Preview

Calculates a preview of a selected job. The preview is displayed in the "Info" pane of the "Job settings" drawer. At the same time, a color bar depicting the color space of the previewed job is displayed.

Stop Job

Stops processing a selected job.

Edit menu

Select All

Selects all jobs displayed in the job list.

View menu

Job Preview

Starts the Mac OS X preview tool with which you can edit a preview previously created in EFI Designer Edition.

Job Info

Hides/shows the drawer with the current job settings for the selected job. This command has the same function as the "Open job settings drawer" button.

A blue frame indicates the current position of the cursor in the program window. If the cursor is positioned in the lower section of the program window when you select this command, a nesting will be created; otherwise a job will be added to the job list.

By creating a preview of all your jobs, you can scroll quickly through your job list to check the contents of each individual job.


Hide Toolbar

Hides the toolbar. This command has a toggle effect. When the toolbar is hidden, the command changes to "Show Toolbar".

Customize Toolbar

Opens a sheet in which you can define the appearance of the toolbar.

Drag the icons you wish to display into the toolbar.

In the pop-up menu "Show", choose whether your toolbar should display "Icon & Text", "Icon Only" or "Text Only".

Select "Use Small Size" to reduce the size of the displayed icons.

To reset the toolbar, drag the default set of icons into the toolbar.

To remove any icon from the toolbar, drag the icon outside the toolbar.

When you have made your selections, click "Done" to close the sheet.

Tools menu

EFI Color Editor

Starts EFI Color Editor — a tool for defining and managing spot colors. See the chapter “EFI Color Editor” on page 6-1 for further information.

EFI Ink Assistant

Starts EFI Ink Assistant — a tool for checking the consistency of your printer’s color reproduction. See the chapter “EFI Ink Assistant” on page 7-1 for further information.

EFI Profile Connector

Starts EFI Profile Connector — a tool that enables you to implement your own media profiles in EFI Designer Edition. See “EFI Profile Connector” on page 8-1 for further information.

HP Professional PANTONE Emulation swatch-book

Click this button to start HP Professional PANTONE Emulation swatch-book — a tool for simulating the output of PANTONE colors.

Window menu

This menu lists the program window and any sheets in EFI Designer Edition that are open. The checkmark indicates the window that is currently active.


Help menu

Product Website

This command establishes an Internet connection to the website for your product.

Support Website

This command establishes an Internet connection to the support website for your product, should you require assistance at any time.

HP Knowledge Center (for HP customers only)

The HP Knowledge Center is an English-only website. It provides useful information on printing via different types of workflows and includes a troubleshooting section.

EFI Designer Edition Help

This command activates the online Help.

Online Update

This command establishes an Internet connection to the EFI online update website. Refer to the section “Online update” on page 11-1 for further information.

Online Profile Update

This command establishes an Internet connection to the EFI online profile update website. Refer to the section “Online Profile update” on page 11-2 for further information.

3.4.2 Windows

JobList menu

Add Jobs

Opens a window in which you can select a file to be loaded in EFI Designer Edition.

Create Nesting

Creates a nesting of one or more job files selected in the job list.

This command is only required if EFI Designer Edition is installed in Windows and you want to print directly from a Macintosh application. Refer to “Windows server/Macintosh OS X client” on page 2-4 for further information.

Please note that this command can only be applied if your operating system supports AppleTalk.

Toolbar

Hides/shows the toolbar. When the toolbar is displayed, the command is shown with a check mark. This command has a toggle effect. Selecting the command again hides the toolbar and removes the check mark.

Status Bar

Hides/shows the status bar. When the status bar is displayed, the command is shown with a check mark. This command has a toggle effect. Selecting the command again hides the status bar and removes the check mark.

3.5 Program window and context menusThe program window displays the current status of your jobs. It gives the following details:

Number of job. All jobs are numbered consecutively in the order in which they are loaded in EFI Designer Edition.

Name

Name of the job file.

Size

File size of the job.

Date & Time

Date and time the file was created.

Status

Current status of the job. For example, this column lets you know whether your job is ready for processing, whether a preview has been created, or whether your job is being printed.

Jobs in progress, e.g. "Ripping", "Previewing", "Printing", are indicated by a progress bar.

Author

Displays the name of the user who submitted the print job.

You can change the width and position of the individual columns.

To alter the column width, position the cursor on the right edge of a column heading. Hold down the mouse button and drag the mouse. Release the mouse button when the required column width is reached.

To change the position of a column, hold down the mouse button in the middle of a column heading. Then drag the mouse to the required position. Release the mouse button when the required position is reached.

When you have loaded a job in EFI Designer Edition, a number of commands are available to you via the context menu. These commands correspond to the commands that you access via the toolbar buttons or "JobList" menu. See the section “JobList menu” on page 3-25 for further information.

To access the context menu, proceed as follows:

In the case of a multi-page document, EFI Designer Edition will process the first page and then begin printing, while simultaneously processing the second page. The status messages will change to reflect this. At the same time, you will be informed which page of your document is currently being processed.

Macintosh: Hold down "Ctrl" and select a job.

Windows: Select a job and click the right mouse button.


4 Color managementThis chapter is intended as a brief introduction to the subject of color management and explains the importance of selecting the correct profiles to ensure color-accurate output.

4.1 The need for color managementColor reproduction is device-dependent, i.e. if you output the same file on two different devices, you will usually get two different sets of colors. Even two printers of the same model may show slight differences in their output.

To overcome this problem, the ICC (International Color Consortium), an organization of more than 50 pre-press hardware and software manufacturers, has developed a recognized standard for color management systems to allow uniform cross-device color reproduction. This standard is based on a series of profiles which control color reproduction from image creation to image output.

You will find detailed information about color management on the website www.color.org.

4.2 ProfilesTo obtain color-accurate printouts in accordance with the ICC standard, EFI Designer Edition uses two output profiles — a media profile and an image profile.

4.2.1 Media profilesThe media profile describes the color reproduction properties of the printer model you are using, based on the type of medium you are printing on, the resolution and the type of ink.

A set of media profiles for your printer is provided with your software. You will find these in the appropriate subfolder.

When you select a particular paper name and print quality in the "Color" pane of the "Preferences" dialog, EFI Designer Edition automatically assigns the appropriate media profile based on these settings. The media profile ensures that the largest possible color gamut is achieved during printing.

4.2.2 Image profilesThe image profile describes the color reproduction properties of the device you wish to simulate on your inkjet printer.

You can load the following image profiles in EFI Designer Edition:

• any image profile provided with your EFI software

• any image profile provided by your printing company that has been created for a specific printing press

The following image profiles installed automatically in the appropriate subfolder of the folder "EFI Designer Edition". They are immediately available for selection in EFI Designer Edition.

This profile was measured from an EFI reference print created on a Heidelberg SM 74/4 printing press using K&E Novaboard inks and Zanders MegaMatt 200 g paper. A 60 l/cm screen with angles of C 112.5°, M 172.5°, Y 7.5° and K 52.5° and an elliptical dot form were used. The print order was K-C-M-Y.

The printout provided with your EFI Designer Edition software was created using this image profile.

• EFI_Form_Offset_v9.icc

• BestFormOffset7.icm

This profile was measured from an EFI reference print — a standard offset print created with 74 l/cm and screen angles of C82.5, M22.5, Y7.5 and K52.5. The print order was KCMY and printing took place in accordance with ISO L*a*b* values on a Heidelberg Speedmaster printing press. The color densities were not taken into account.

• Best_SWOP_Ref_Presssheet_2003.icc

This profile is used by EFI when obtaining SWOP certification for different printers.

• SimuChroma.icc and SimuChroma_2.icc

This profile is based on the output from two different analog proof systems. As with a standardized offset print, a standardized analog proof can also be used as a reference.

• ISO profiles

For information on the latest ISO profiles, visit the website www.eci.org.

• PSR profiles

For information on the latest PSR profiles, visit the website www.eci.org.

• Indigo_HP3000Glos_exp05.icc

This profile was created for use with an HP Indigo printing press 3000.


RGB image profiles

• ECI-RGB.V1.0.icc

This image profile was created for the standardized RGB color space of the "European Color Initiative". ECI-RGB is the color space used to store medium-independent data in order to avoid the practical problems that occur in processing CIELAB color data.

• sRGB Color Space Profile.icm

This image profile was created for outputting sRGB data. sRGB is a standardized RGB color system from Microsoft/Hewlett-Packard with defined primary colors. The profile enables you to output sRGB data, but is also suitable for general RGB data such as scans or photos from digital cameras.

• AdobeRGB1998.icc

This profile employs the default RGB working color space.

• PhotoGamutRGB.icc

This image profile is intended for files from digital cameras and scanners. It works best in conjunction with the rendering intent “Relative colorimetric”. However, for files with extremely large color spaces and containing very highly saturated colors, the rendering intent “Perceptual” may produce better results. It is recommended that you also use black point compensation, if available.

Multicolor profiles

Although EFI does not provide multicolor profiles. EFI Designer Edition enables you to use your own multicolor profiles. Refer to the section “Image profiles” on page 3-9 for further information.

4.3 Rendering intentsIn EFI Designer Edition, jobs are processed first using the selected image profile and then using the media profile, before being output on your printer. This process involves the conversion from and to different color spaces.

Irrespective of whether your input file was created in CMYK or RGB format, EFI Designer Edition converts the color values first to L*a*b* before converting them to the CMYK color space — the color space used by your printer. This conversion is controlled by rendering intents.

The L*a*b* color system is a device-independent color space that describes each color uniquely in mathematical terms.


Each color space has a different color gamut. For example, the RGB color space has a much wider color gamut than the CMYK color space. In other words, the RGB color space is able to display a much wider range of colors. This is the reason why RGB images, such as photos, appear much more vivid than images created in the CMYK color space.

Converting colors to a different color space may mean that colors in the source color space lie outside the color gamut of the destination color space and therefore cannot be displayed.

This problem can be solved by selecting an appropriate rendering intent. Rendering intents define how the colors of the source color gamut will be adjusted to fit into the destination color gamut.

For example, you can define whether colors that lie within the destination color gamut should remain unchanged or whether the whole color gamut should be compressed, i.e. scaled, to fit into the destination color gamut, thus preserving the range of colors that is displayed.

In a similar way, each output device also displays a different color gamut and even output devices of the same printer model reproduce colors slightly differently.

In EFI Designer Edition, rendering intents are used to adjust the color gamut of your printer to that of the reference printer (printing press) being simulated.

The following rendering intents are available in EFI Designer Edition:

• Relative colorimetric (no paper white)

This rendering intent compares the white point of the source color space with that of the destination color space and adjusts all colors accordingly. All colors that lie within the color gamut of the destination color space are accurately reproduced. Any colors that lie outside the color gamut of the destination color space are replaced by the colorimetrically closest color that can be reproduced.

This rendering intent is suitable for creating proofs with no paper white image.

• Absolute colorimetric (paper white)

This rendering intent leaves all colors that lie within the destination color gamut unchanged, thus maintaining color accuracy. If the destination color gamut is smaller than the source color gamut, it may mean that two distinct colors from the source color gamut are mapped to the same color in the destination color gamut.

This rendering intent is suitable for creating proofs with paper white simulation.

Paper white simulation means that the color of the reference paper is also simulated. For example, if you select the image profile "Newspaper" in combination with the rendering intent "Absolute colorimetric (paper white)", your image will be printed on a gray background to simulate the color of newsprint.


• Perceptual

This rendering intent preserves the visual relationship between colors in a way that is perceived natural to the human eye by compressing all colors and scaling them to fit into the available destination color space. Since all colors are affected, even those that would normally lie within the color gamut of the destination color space are compressed — even if they could normally be accurately reproduced.

This rendering intent is most suitable for printing photographic images, where having the largest possible color space is more important than a color-accurate print result. It is therefore not recommended for the output of color-accurate proofs.

• Saturated

This rendering intent aims to preserve vivid color at the expense of accurate color. The source color gamut is scaled to the destination color gamut, but preserves relative saturation instead of hue, so color hues may shift if the destination color space is smaller than the source color space.

This rendering intent is designed primarily for business graphics, where bright, saturated colors are more important than the exact relationship between colors (such as in a photographic image).

4.4 Color output presetsEFI Designer Edition provides default settings for three workflow scenarios: photo, proofing and no color management (native). A fourth color output preset, HP CMYK Plus, is also available if the selected printer supports this feature.

The following sections illustrate each of the different workflows and describe which profiles are applied during printing.

4.4.1 No color management (native)With this color output preset, no profiles are applied during job processing. As no color management takes place, the results represent the true color quality of your printer. This setting is necessary to create your own media profiles. It can also be used to output CMYK images, but not RGB or Gray data.

4.4.2 PhotoThe color output preset "Photo" ensures that print jobs are output with the same vibrancy of color as the original.

4.4.4 HP CMYK PlusThe color output preset "HP CMYK Plus" is only available if your printer supports this feature.

With this setting, a Device Link profile is automatically created during job processing. Refer to “HP CMYK Plus” on page 3-7 for further information.


4.4.5 Linearizations

4.4.6 Types of linearization There are two types of linearization: a base linearization and a printer linearization.

• Base linearization

A base linearization forms the basis for the media profile. It contains details of the quantities of color, under which the media profile was created, i.e. the color values necessary to achieve the maximum density of color while, at the same time, using as little ink as possible.

A base linearization is assigned ("patched") to each media profile and is loaded automatically with the media profile.

A base linearization file is provided with each media profile. It is installed in the appropriate subfolder of "Profiles".

• Printer linearization

The color reproduction of your printer may change over a period of time. Performing a printer linearization enables you to re-adjust the color densities and return the printer to the original state used to generate the base linearization and the media profile.

A printer linearization can be performed using a measuring device (spectrophotometer) or visually. However, whereas a measuring device produces exact results, a visual printer linearization is based purely on manual adjustments and should therefore only be performed as an emergency measure by experienced users.

4.4.7 When and why do you need to perform a printer linearization?

You will need to perform a printer linearization in the following instances:

• If you are using a media profile that was not created on your exact printer, e.g. the media profiles provided with your EFI software.

Even mass-produced printers of the same model display slightly different color properties which may result in certain color deviances. These deviances can be corrected by performing a printer linearization.

Performing a printer linearization ensures that the color reproduction of your particular printer matches that of the EFI reference printer used to create the base linearization and media profile.

• After changing the print head.

Replacing printer parts can affect the color properties of your printer.

• If you ascertain that your proofs no longer match earlier proof results.

Performing a printer linearization ensures that the color reproduction of your printer remains constant.

As a general rule of thumb, it is a good idea to perform a printer linearization approximately every two weeks.

If your printer is equipped with a calibration feature, you will find further details in the section “Calibration” on page 3-15.

In addition, EFI Designer Edition provides a tool for making visual adjustments to the color reproduction of your printer. This tool is described in the chapter “EFI Ink Assistant” on page 7-1.

EFI Designer Edition supports visual printer linearizations.

Some printers are equipped with an automatic closed-loop calibration feature which applies densitometer readings. EFI Designer Edition supports this type of printer linearization also.

To perform a printer linearization using a spectrophotometer, you require an EFI Windows proofing product. These products create printer linearization files in vcc format, which is the file format supported by EFI Designer Edition.


5 NestingsThis chapter describes the nesting function available in EFI Designer Edition.

5.1 What is a nesting?A nesting is an assortment of different image files arranged in a space-saving manner for output as a single PostScript print job. In this way, paper waste is reduced to a minimum.

For photographers, the nesting function provides an easy way to create index prints.

The individual jobs contained in a nesting can be of any file format supported by EFI Designer Edition. When you insert an image or document file into a nesting, EFI Designer Edition automatically creates a copy of the entry in the job list. The settings embedded in the original file are also copied and applied within the nesting. Job-specific settings can be further modified within the nesting.

5.2 Creating a nestingBefore you create a nesting, you can specify how you wish your image files to be positioned. To define the appearance of a nesting, use the "Nesting" pane of the "Preferences" dialog. You will find further information on the available settings in the section “Nesting pane” on page 3-18.

To create a nesting, proceed as follows:

• Select one or more jobs in the program window and click "Nesting" in the toolbar.

• Drag and drop any chosen file(s), e.g. located on your hard disk or in the job list, directly into the nesting area of EFI Designer Edition,

• Select one or more jobs, hold down "ctrl", right-click one or more jobs in the job list and choose "Create Nesting" from the context menu (Macintosh),

• Select and right-click one or more jobs in the job list and choose "Create Nesting" from the context menu (Windows),

• Highlight one or more jobs in the job list and then choose "Create Nesting" from the "JobList" menu.

EFI Designer Edition creates a nesting in the nesting area of the program window. All files and nestings are numbered consecutively in the order in which they were loaded in EFI Designer Edition.

5.3 SettingsAfter you have created a nesting, various job settings are available to influence the output. These settings vary, depending on whether you select:

• the nesting itself or

• an image file contained in a nesting

5.3.1 Nesting settingsWhen you select a nesting file, three panes are available to you from the "Job settings" drawer: "Info", "Color" and "Print".

The settings on these panes are very similar to the job settings described earlier in this manual. Therefore, if you require detailed information on any of the settings that are not described here, please refer to the section “Job settings drawer” on page 3-20.

Info pane

Nesting settings become available when you click on the “Set nesting” button. The settings correspond to the settings previously described in the section “Nesting pane” on page 3-18.

Color pane

For nesting files, it is only possible to define a paper name and a print quality. All other settings on this pane are dimmed because they are job specific. To make job-specific settings, refer to the section “Settings of jobs within a nesting” on page 5-2.

Print pane

The settings on this pane correspond to the settings previously described in the section “Print pane” on page 3-24.

5.3.2 Settings of jobs within a nestingWhen you click an image file in a nesting, two panes are available to you from the "Job settings" drawer: "Info" and "Color".

The settings on these panes are very similar to the job settings described earlier in this manual. Therefore, if you require detailed information on any of the settings that are not described here, please refer to the section “Job settings drawer” on page 3-20.

Info pane

The settings on this pane correspond to the settings previously described in the section “Info pane” on page 3-20.

To display the individual jobs, click on the plus sign to expand the nesting file.


Color pane

It is not possible to select a paper name or a print quality for individual image files in a nesting. All other settings on this pane correspond to the settings previously described in the section “Color pane” on page 3-23.

5.4 Working with nestings

5.4.1 Previewing a nestingTo create a preview, highlight the nesting and click the "Preview" button in the toolbar.

EFI Designer Edition processes each of the files in the nesting and then displays a preview. During processing, the properties of the individual jobs, such as scaling and orientation, are taken into account.

If all the files do not fit on one page, EFI Designer Edition will automatically create a multi-page nesting.

Nestings are always created with 5 mm between images.

Job tickets and control strips can be displayed for each individual image in a nesting. You will find further information about these options in the section “Layout pane” on page 3-5.

5.4.2 Adding a file to a nestingTo add a file to an existing nesting, drag the new file into the required nesting.

5.4.3 Printing a nestingWhen you print a nesting, all the images it contains are output as a single print job. Please note the effect the following settings can have on your printout:

• If your nesting contains images that are set to fit the paper size, each image will be printed on a separate sheet of paper.

• If you are printing on roll paper to a printer with an activated autocut feature, the paper will be automatically cut after each row of images.

5.4.4 Deleting files from a nestingTo delete a nesting or to delete a single file from a nesting, highlight the appropriate file and select "Delete Jobs" from the "JobList" menu.

Alternatively, select "Calculate Preview" from the context menu.

Please note that it is not possible to preview files that contain undefined spot colors.

6 EFI Color EditorThis chapter describes how to use EFI Color Editor to define and manage the spot colors in your jobs.

6.1 What are spot colors?A spot color is a specially mixed ink that is applied on the printing press, as opposed to a mix of CMYK inks which make up process printing. Spot colors can be produced in a much more vibrant range of colors than can be created from mixing process colors.

In order to ensure that a printer uses the exact color that was intended, color systems were developed, e.g. PANTONE, HKS, RAL.

Many different companies produce spot colors, together with a set of swatch-books that show printed examples of these colors.

Spot colors can be applied in addition to process (CMYK) colors for greater flexibility. As an example, they are often used to print company logos.

Spot colors are usually 100% colors with a high degree of saturation. They often lie outside the color space of the printing press and even inkjet printers may have difficulty reproducing them accurately.

EFI Designer Edition manages spot colors in two different tables: an internal table, which ensures the reproduction of standard PANTONE, HKS, HKS N 3000 plus, HKS K 3000 plus and TOYO spot colors, and an external table, which contains spot color definitions in CMYK and L*a*b* format. Only external spot color tables can be loaded and edited in EFI Designer Edition.

6.2 User interface of EFI Color EditorTo start EFI Color Editor, select "EFI Color Editor" from the "Tools" menu of EFI Designer Edition.

6.2.1 ToolbarThe toolbar of EFI Color Editor contains the following buttons:

To access the context menu on a Macintosh, position the cursor in the toolbar, hold down "ctrl" and click the mouse button.

You can use the context menu to define the appearance of the toolbar. The following commands are available:

Select this command to define a toolbar consisting of icons and text.

Icon Only

Select this command to define a toolbar consisting of icons only.

Text Only

Select this command to define a toolbar consisting of text only.

Use Small Size

Select this command to display small icons. Deactivate this command to display larger icons in the toolbar.

Remove Item

Select this command to remove a selected item from the toolbar.

Keep Item Visible

When you resize a window, toolbar icons become hidden as the toolbar shrinks. Select this command to define which icons disappear last when the window is resized.


Customize Toolbar

Select this command to open a sheet in which you can define the appearance of the toolbar.

Drag the icons you wish to display into the toolbar.

In the pop-up menu "Show", choose whether your toolbar should display "Icon & Text", "Icon Only" or "Text Only".

Select "Use Small Size" to reduce the size of the displayed icons.

To reset the toolbar, drag the default set of icons into the toolbar.

To remove any icon from the toolbar, drag the icon outside the toolbar.

When you have made your selections, click "Done" to close the sheet.

Windows

To access the context menu in Windows, position the cursor anywhere in the program window and click the right mouse button.

The following commands are available: "Add Color", "Edit Color" and "Delete Color". These commands are described in more detail in the section “Menus” on page 6-2.

6.2.4 Defining spot colorsIf the image file you are processing contains spot colors, you will need to enter the spot color codes in EFI Color Editor so that they can be correctly processed.

The sections below describe how to enter new spot colors directly in EFI Color Editor as well as how to add spot colors if EFI Designer Edition detects a non-defined spot color during job processing.

EFI Color Editor for Macintosh

To enter a spot color in EFI Color Editor for Macintosh, proceed as follows:

1. From the "Tools" menu of EFI Designer Edition, select "EFI Color Editor". The "EFI Color Editor" window opens.

2. Click "Open" if you wish to add your new color to an already existing spot color table and load the spot color table you want to edit. Otherwise a new spot color table will automatically be created.

CMYK color codes can be purchased from your spot color manufacturer.


3. Click the "Add" button to add a new spot color. The dialog "Spot color editor" opens.

4. Select a spot color type from the pop-up menu. You can choose between:

• Alias

• CMYK

• L*a*b*

• L*a*b*/CMYK

By selecting "Alias", you can replicate a previously defined spot color. Select the color with the color values you wish to copy from the pop-up menu "Spot color alias".

5. Enter a name for your spot color in the text input field "Spot color name". The name you define must match exactly the name used in the application to create the file.

6. Enter the color values of your spot color in the text input fields of the selected color space. A color preview appears in the "Color preview" area.

7. Enter any comments, if required.

8. Click "Add". The dialog closes and your newly defined spot color appears in EFI Color Editor.

9. Click "Save" to save your spot color table.

10. Define a name and a location for your spot color table in the dialog. Spot color tables are saved in bct format.

You can now load your spot color table in EFI Designer Edition. Refer to the section “Spot Colors pane” on page 3-17 for further information.

EFI Color Editor for Windows

To enter a spot color in EFI Color Editor for Windows, proceed as follows:

1. From the “Tools” menu of EFI Designer Edition, select "EFI Color Editor". The "EFI Color Editor" window opens.

2. Click "Open" if you wish to add your new color to an already existing spot color table and load the spot color table you want to edit. Then click "Add" to add a new row to the table.

3. Enter a name for your spot color in the text input field "Name". The name you define must match exactly the name used in the application to create the file.

To enter L*a*b* values of your spot color, you may first need to measure the color values of the swatch patch with a spectrophotometer.

To edit a defined spot color, double-click the spot color name in the list, make your required changes in the "Spot color editor" dialog and click "Apply".

If you want to create a new spot color table, skip this step.


4. Click in the text input field "Type" and select a spot color type from the pop-up menu. You can choose between:

• Alias

• CMYK

• L*a*b*

• L*a*b*/CMYK

By selecting "Alias", you can replicate a previously defined spot color. To select an alias, click in the text input field "Alias for" and select the color with the color values you wish to copy from the pop-up menu.

5. Enter the color values of your spot color in the text input fields of the selected color space. A color preview appears.

6. Enter any comments, if required.

7. In the toolbar, click "Save" to save your spot color table.

8. Define a name and a location for your spot color table in the dialog. Spot color tables are saved in bct format.


Defining undetected spot colors during job processing

In practice, the easiest way to define a spot color is to access EFI Color Editor from the "Spot Colors" sheet in EFI Designer Edition.

To check whether your print job contains undefined spot colors, proceed as follows:

1. Load a print job in EFI Designer Edition.

2. Highlight the job in the job list and create a preview.

3. In the “Info” pane of the “Job settings” drawer, click "Spot Colors" to display the “Spot colors” drawer. Undefined spot colors are indicated by a question mark.

4. Click "Edit spot colors" to open EFI Color Editor. Any undefined spot colors are automatically listed.

5. Double-click the name of an undefined spot color and make the required settings in the “Edit spot color” dialog. Then click “OK” to close the dialog.

6. In the toolbar, click "Save" to save your spot color definition.

You can only select an alias if previously defined spot colors or the internal table are displayed.

To enter L*a*b* values of your spot color, you may first need to measure the color values of the swatch patch with a spectrophotometer.

You may make your settings direct in the “EFI Color Editor” window, if you prefer. Refer to the previous section for further information, if required.



EFI Designer Edition also provides a number of settings with which you can specify how the spot colors in your jobs should be handled. Refer to the sections “Spot Colors pane” on page 3-17 and “Info pane” on page 3-20 for further information.


7 EFI Ink AssistantThis chapter describes how to perform a visual printer linearization to finetune the color reproduction of your printer.

7.1 What is EFI Ink Assistant?The color reproduction of your printer may change over a period of time. Performing a printer linearization enables you to return the printer to its original state used to generate the base linearization and the media profile.

Your printer may be equipped with a feature with which to calibrate your printer. It ensures that your printer’s color reproduction remains consistent. See the section “Printer pane” on page 3-12.

Generally speaking, using this feature will produce satisfactory results. However, with EFI Ink Assistant you can visually finetune individual ink colors, if you wish, by increasing or decreasing the percentage of ink that is used.

7.2 User interface of EFI Ink AssistantTo start EFI Ink Assistant, from the "Tools" menu of EFI Designer Edition, select "EFI Ink Assistant".

7.3 Using EFI Ink AssistantTo create a visual linearization, proceed as follows:

1. From the "Tools" menu of EFI Designer Edition, select "EFI Ink Assistant". The "EFI Ink Assistant" window opens.

2. Select the radio button for the color you wish to modify. You can modify:

• four colors together (CMYK)

• three colors together (CMY)

• all available colors (Multicolor)

• each color separately (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black, etc.)

3. Click the cursor on the point along the gradation curve, whose value you want to alter. The current cursor coordinates are displayed beneath the chart to assist you. Release the mouse button when you have reached the right coordinates. A node appears along the gradation curve.

4. Drag the node to its new coordinates. Dragging the node to a position above the gradation curve adds color; coordinate values below the gradation curve reduce the percentage of color.

You can apply this procedure, for example, to remedy a green tint by reducing the amount of yellow and cyan.

5. Release the mouse button when the desired value has been reached.

Once you have defined values for an individual color, the options "CMYK", "CMY" and “Multicolor” are no longer selectable.

The settings you make affect all color tones that contain the percentage of ink color that you have modified.

If you select "CMY", the gradation curve for black is also displayed in the chart. This is intended purely as a reference and cannot be modified.

Similarly, if you are adjusting "Cyan", "Magenta", "Yellow" and "Black" separately, the gradation curve for each modified color is also displayed in the chart as a reference. To make further modifications to a specific color, however, you must select the appropriate radio button.


The input and output percentages of ink that you have defined for a specific node are displayed in the table. You can modify the figures in the table if required.

To cancel your amendments, click "Reset color" to undo your settings for the selected color or click "Reset all" to undo your settings for all colors.

6. Repeat steps 1 to 3 for the other colors, if required.

7. Modify the brightness, if required. To do so, first select the radio button "Linear" or "Gamma".

If you select "Gamma", the lightness of all color values, but mainly the mid-color tones, will be affected. If you select "Linear", the lightness of all color values will be equally affected.

Move the slider bar to modify the global brightness. The changes you make here are automatically applied to all colors.

8. Save your visual printer linearization file by selecting the appropriate command from the "File" menu.

8 EFI Profile ConnectorThis chapter describes how to create your own media profiles and implement them in EFI Designer Edition.

8.1 What is EFI Profile Connector?EFI Designer Edition provides media profiles for a wide range of different papers. The very first time you launch the application, EFI Designer Edition automatically searches for profiles in the "Profiles" folder. Then, when you make your media settings in the "Color" pane, EFI Designer Edition automatically assigns the EFI media profile that matches your settings.

However, you may want to create your own media profiles for some types of paper that are not standardly supported in EFI Designer Edition. EFI Profile Connector makes it possible to implement these in EFI Designer Edition.

8.2 User interface of EFI Profile Connector

To start EFI Profile Connector, from the "Tools" menu of EFI Designer Edition, select "EFI Profile Connector".

8.3 Creating media profilesTo create your own media profile, proceed as follows:

1. Start EFI Designer Edition and click "Preferences" in the toolbar to open the "Preferences" dialog.

2. Click "Color" in the toolbar to open the "Color" pane.

3. Select "No color management (native)" from the pop-up menu.

4. Make your required settings for paper name and print quality.

5. Calibrate your printer using the automatic closed-loop color calibration feature. Refer to “Calibration” on page 3-15 for further details.

6. Load the chart provided with your profiling software in EFI Designer Edition and print it out.

The chart you are required to print depends on the measuring device you are using. Refer to your profiling software manual for further details.

When you have printed out the chart, it is important that you do not modify any of the settings in EFI Designer Edition. This is because the current settings are extracted from EFI Designer Edition and forwarded to EFI Profile Connector.

7. Follow the instructions in your profiling software manual to create a media profile.

8.4 Implementing customized media profiles

When you have created your media profile, you need to implement it in EFI Designer Edition. This is done using EFI Profile Connector.

To implement a customized media profile in EFI Designer Edition, proceed as follows:

1. From the "Tools" menu of EFI Designer Edition, select "EFI Profile Connector". The "EFI Profile Connector" window opens and displays the settings that were used to create your media profile.

2. Make sure the selected paper name and print quality settings correspond with those used to create the media profile.

3. Click "Choose profile" (Macintosh) and navigate to the location of your newly created media profile. In Windows, this button is depicted by three dots (...).

4. Double-click the icc profile to load it in EFI Profile Connector and close the dialog.

If your paper type is not listed, select a paper which best matches the properties of the paper you are using.

Not all printers are equipped with an internal calibration feature. If your printer does not support this function, skip this step.


5. Enter a name for your paper in the text input field. This is the name that will later be displayed for selection in EFI Designer Edition. Paper names of max. 63 characters are permitted.

6. Click "Patch profile". A dialog for defining the location of your media profile opens.

7. Enter the name under which you wish to save your media profile. The default setting is the current name of your media profile.

8. Define where you want to save your media profile. By default, EFI Designer Edition chooses a folder whose name corresponds with that of your media profile.

If you accept the suggested path, EFI Designer Edition will create a subfolder in the "Profiles" folder for your printer.

You may save your media profile to a different folder by navigating to a chosen destination. However, please note that all media profiles MUST be saved to the "Profiles" folder. Otherwise they will not be detected.

9. Click "Save" (Macintosh) or "OK" (Windows). A message informs you that your media profile has been successfully "patched".

Your media profile is now ready for use and can be selected in the media profiles section of the "Color" pane the next time you start EFI Designer Edition.

Some printers have a feature which automatically transmits information about the type of paper loaded in the printer to the software. If you have such a printer, EFI Designer Edition will display all the available paper names in a pop-up menu.

9 HP Professional PANTONE Emulation swatch-book

This chapter describes how to use the HP Professional PANTONE Emulation swatch-book to simulate the output of PANTONE colors on a specified output device for a given print medium, ink set and print quality.

9.1 What is the HP Professional PANTONE Emulation swatch-book?

The HP Professional PANTONE Emulation swatch-book enables you to print out simulated PANTONE colors to illustrate delta E color differences between the simulation and the original PANTONE spot colors.

During printing, PANTONE solid colors that lie within the printing system’s color gamut will be matched. Colors that lie outside the color gamut will be simulated so as to achieve the visually closest match. Thus you can assess how close the simulation is to the original spot color.

9.2 Using the HP Professional PANTONE Emulation swatch-book

To print out selected PANTONE spot colors, proceed as follows:

1. From the "Tools" menu of EFI Designer Edition, select "HP Professional PANTONE Emulation swatch-book". A dialog opens.

2. Select the PANTONE colors for the type of print medium you want to simulate (C = Coated, M = Matt, U = Uncoated).

3. Select the appropriate radio button to print all PANTONE colors of one type or just selected colors.

To print all colors of one type requires approximately 53 sheets of A4 size. To print selected colors only, hold down the Ctrl key (Windows) or the Apple key (Macintosh) and choose individual colors from the list box.

4. Click "Print" to start printing. The selected PANTONE colors are compiled into a single PostScript job and added to the job list for processing. During printing, the settings for print medium, and print quality, as made in the Preferences dialog, are taken into account. Color management settings are deactivated. This ensures that PANTONE solid colors within the printing system's color gamut will be exactly matched, while those outside the color gamut are simulated to achieve the closest possible match.

The HP Professional PANTONE Emulation swatch-book is available to HP customers only.

If you do not wish to print immediately or often have need to print the same colors, you can save the current selection by clicking "Save As". Files are saved in eps format to the Work\HP PPE folder.

10 Japanese font downloadThis chapter describes how to print using double-byte Japanese fonts in EFI Designer Edition.

10.1 Installing double-byte fontsThe Japanese version of EFI Designer Edition is shipped with two Japanese fonts. Additional double-byte fonts are available for purchase from third-party providers.

10.1.1 Installing Japanese fonts from EFIThe Japanese font option CD contains two Japanese fonts: Heisei-Mincho-W3 and Heisei-KakuGo-W5. Both are CID-formatted, low-res fonts. Before installing, make sure that EFI Designer Edition is correctly set up as a virtual printer. Refer to the section “Setting up EFI Designer Edition as a virtual printer” on page 2-3 for further information. Then, insert the font CD into the CD-ROM drive and follow the on-screen instructions.

10.1.2 Installing Japanese fonts from a third-party provider

To install third-pary Japanese fonts, proceed as follows:

1. Make sure that EFI Designer Edition is correctly set up as a virtual printer. Refer to the section “Setting up EFI Designer Edition as a virtual printer” on page 2-3 for further information.

2. Open the dialog "EFI Spooler" as follows:

Macintosh:Open "System Preferences" and click "EFI Spooler".

PC:From the "View" menu, choose "EFI Spooler".

3. Click "Start" to activate the FontDownload spooler. You can see the FontDownload spooler in AppleTalk. The default name is “EFISoftwarePrinterFD”.

4. Follow the instructions for installation provided with your third-pary Japanese fonts. Generally speaking, you can install the fonts from a Macintosh OS 9 computer in the same AppleTalk network as EFI Designer Edition.

During the installation, you may be required to select the EFI Designer Edition printer. Make sure that you select the correct spooler name.

The optionally available EFI fonts are low resolution fonts. Therefore, please note that any additional fonts you install must also be low-res.

Please note that you must first install the Japanese fonts from EFI before installing Japanese fonts from a third-party provider.

Please note that this menu command is not available on computers on which Windows XP is installed. This is because Windows XP does not support AppleTalk printing.

5. When the font download has been completed, restart EFI Designer Edition.

After font installation, it is advisable to deactivate the FontDownload spooler to free up system resources.


11 Online updatesEFI continues to develop its products even after product launch, e.g. to improve functionality or to increase printer support. Such software updates are available for download from the EFI website. This chapter describes how to install online software and profile updates.

11.1 Macintosh

11.1.1 Online updatePlease note that to perform an online update your computer must have Internet access. It is recommended that you regularly run the update procedure to make sure you always have the latest version installed.

To update your software, proceed as follows:

1. From the "Help" menu, select "Online Update" to set up a connection to the EFI server and open the “Updater” dialog.

If required, you can download a copy of the installation files to the computer desktop by selecting the appropriate checkbox in this dialog. This setting is useful:

• if the computer on which EFI Designer Edition is installed does not have Internet access

• if you do not wish to install the update immediately

2. Exit all applications. Then click “Next”. A window with a list of currently available software updates opens.

It displays which update files are available and also gives information regarding file size and version number.

3. Select the checkboxes of the updates you wish to install and click “Next”. The Updater downloads and installs the appropriate files on your computer.

4. Follow the on-screen instructions. Click “Finish” to complete installation. Restart your computer, if prompted to do so.

When an Internet connection has been set up, details of the currently installed software version are automatically submitted in order to ascertain whether a newer program version is available.

Please be assured that no personal details of any kind are transferred from the Client computer.

11.2 WindowsDuring installation of EFI Designer Edition, an icon is created in the system tray on the lower right of the computer desktop. This icon represents EFI Designer Edition Control.

EFI Designer Edition Control consists of a number of menu commands, which are accessed by right-clicking the EFI Designer Edition Control icon. These menu commands are described below.

11.2.3 Autostart EFI Designer Edition ControlBy default, EFI Designer Edition Control will be started automatically whenever you switch on your computer. The command has a check mark next to it.

Select this command to remove the check mark if you do not want EFI Designer Edition Control to be started automatically. In this case, you can start the tool manually by clicking:

• Start > All Programs > EFI Designer Edition > EFI Designer Edition Control (Windows XP)

• Start > Program Files > EFI Designer Edition > EFI Designer Edition Control (Windows 2000/2003)

11.2.4 ExitSelect this command to exit EFI Designer Edition Control. To restart, click:

• Start > All Programs > EFI Designer Edition > EFI Designer Edition Control (Windows XP)

12 TroubleshootingThis chapter tells you how to proceed if you encounter problems while working with EFI Designer Edition. If, after performing the suggested solution, the problem still persists, please contact EFI at the addresses given in the section “Customer Service” on page 12-8.

12.1 Error messagesThe following error messages are listed in alphabetical order.

Cannot convert color space

Cannot get job info

The error messages displayed in the program window are preceded by the word "Input", "Color", "Print" or "Port", to indicate at which stage of processing the problem occurred. The category of error is omitted from the messages listed below.

Cause: A problem has occurred during job processing. EFI Designer Edition is unable to convert your image data to the CMYK color space required for printing.

Solution: Try resetting EFI Designer Edition. To do this, first exit EFI Designer Edition. Then proceed as follows:

• Macintosh:Delete all files with the file extension "plist" from the folder "Home:Library:Preferences:EFI Designer Edition". Delete also the "plist" files beginning "com.eficolor" from the "Home:Library:Preferences:ByHost" folder. Finally, delete the "Work" folder.

• Windows:Delete all files with the file extension "plist" from the folder "Documents and Settings/.../Application Data/EFI Designer Edition".

If this does not help, reinstall EFI Designer Edition.

If the problem persists, contact customer service for further assistance.

Cause: EFI Designer Edition is unable to read certain information from the job file. This information is required for job processing.

Solution: Delete your job from the program window. Then reload it and try again.

Cause: EFI Designer Edition cannot find the required linearization (bpl) file.

Solution: 1. Delete your job from the program window.

2. Make sure that you have selected a paper name in the "Color" pane. If no paper names are available, check that the media profiles are located in the "Profiles" folder.

3. Make sure that the bpl file for the selected paper name is available. The bpl files for default papers provided by EFI are saved to the "Profiles" folder. If you are using your own media profiles these must also be saved to the "Profiles" folder.

4. Check the printer settings in the "Printer" pane.

5. Restart EFI Designer Edition, reload your job and try again.

If the problem persists:

• There may be insufficient space on the hard disk

• Your system may be overloaded. Try restarting your computer and EFI Designer Edition.

Cause: Your system may be overloaded. Preview files are created in PDF format. This uses up memory.

Solution: Delete your job from the program window. Then reload it and try again.

If the problem persists:

• There may be insufficient space on the hard disk

• Your system may be overloaded. Try restarting your computer and EFI Designer Edition.

Cause: Your system may be overloaded.

Solution: Restart EFI Designer Edition.

Cause: A problem has occurred with the selected profiles.

Solution: Check that the path to the media or image profiles you have selected is valid. All media profiles must be saved to the "Profiles" folder. Otherwise they will not be detected.

Cause: It is not possible to process the current job without color management.

This error may occur, for example, if you are trying to print a separated file containing a spot color that is defined in the L*a*b* color space. For printing, L*a*b* data must be converted to CMYK. This is only possible if color management is activated.

Solution: Activate color management to process your job. Refer to the section “Color pane” on page 3-23 for further details.

Cause: The file format of the job you have loaded is not supported by EFI Designer Edition.

Solution: Load a file format that can be processed in EFI Designer Edition.

Cause: Your job is too large to fit on the selected paper size.

Solution: Perform one of the following:

• Select a different paper size in the "Print" pane of the job settings. Refer to the section “Print pane” on page 3-24 for further details.

• Scale your job to fit on the paper size loaded in the printer. Refer to the section “Info pane” on page 3-20 for further details.

By creating a preview, you can check whether your image will fit on the selected paper size before printing.

Cause: Your job is too large to fit on the selected paper size.

Solution: Perform one of the following:

• Select a different paper size in the "Print" pane of the job settings. Refer to the section “Print pane” on page 3-24 for further details.

• Scale your job to fit on the paper size loaded in the printer. Refer to the section “Info pane” on page 3-20 for further details.

If you create a preview, you can check whether your image will fit on the selected paper size before printing.

Cause: An undefined internal error has occurred.

Solution: Delete and reinstall EFI Designer Edition.

Cause: EFI Designer Edition is unable to send the print data to the printer.

Solution: Check that your printer is properly connected. Then make sure that the printer is properly set up in EFI Designer Edition and in your operating system. Refer to the chapter “Printing” on page 2-1 for further information.

Cause: Your job could not be successfully processed. There may be a problem with the file.

Solution: Check your job file. If the problem persists, try printing a different job to ascertain if the problem is repeated with other files. If necessary, contact EFI at the addresses given in the section “Customer Service” on page 12-8 for further advice.

Cause: Your system is overloaded.

Solution: Restart EFI Designer Edition. If the problem persists, restart your computer.

Cause: Your job contains an undefined spot color.

Solution: • Define your spot color in EFI Color Editor. Refer to the section “Info pane” on page 3-20 for further details on spot colors.

• Select "Print unknown spot colors as bright orange" to print undefined spot colors in a distinctive shade of orange. Refer to the section “Info pane” on page 3-20 for further details.

12.2.1 Problems finding EFI Designer Edition as an available printer

12.2.2 Updating a PPD on MacintoshOccasionally, you may need to install a newer version of a PPD, e.g. maybe one that you have received from our Support.

To update an existing PPD, proceed as follows:

Cause: You may have accidentally deleted EFI Designer Edition as a printer.

Solution: Reinstall EFI Designer Edition as a virtual printer. See the section “Setting up EFI Designer Edition as a virtual printer” on page 2-3 for further information.

Cause: The printer driver is missing or the wrong printer driver is installed.

Solution: Install or update the printer driver. See the section “Updating a Windows printer driver” on page 12-6 for further information.

Cause: EFI Designer Edition is not installed on your computer.

Solution: Install EFI Designer Edition. Alternatively, if it is already installed on a computer in your network, you can set up EFI Designer Edition as a virtual printer. See the section “Setting up EFI Designer Edition as a virtual printer” on page 2-3 for further information.

You may have to click the lock icon at the bottom of the dialog first to enable changes.

The Macintosh CD "EFI Designer Edition" contains all PPDs current at the time of shipping, should you inadvertently delete an installed PPD or wish to install a PPD for a different language.


12.2.3 Updating a Windows printer driverOccasionally, you may need to install a newer version of a printer driver, e.g. maybe one that you have received from our Support.

To update an existing printer driver, proceed as follows:

1. Open the Control Panel and select "Printer and Faxes" (Windows XP) or "Printer" (Windows 2000/2003/XP/ME, 95/98/NT 4.0).

2. Right-click the printer whose printer driver you want to change and select "Properties" from the context menu.

3. On the "Advanced" tab, click "New driver".

4. Follow the on-screen instructions, making sure to select "EFI" as the printer manufacturer and "EFI Designer Edition" as the printer. Then click "Have Disk".

5. Navigate to the location of the updated printer driver file.

6. Continue to follow the on-screen instructions.

7. Click "Finish" to install the updated printer driver.

12.2.4 Changing the language of EFI Designer Edition

EFI Designer Edition is available in the following languages: English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Chinese Simplified, Chinese Traditional, Japanese and Korean.

By default, the software is installed in the language of the operating system. To change the display language, you must first change the language of the operating system, as described in the following sections.

12.2.4.1 Macintosh

To change the language in Mac OS X, proceed as follows:

1. Make sure that EFI Designer Edition is not started.

2. Open "System Preferences" and double-click on "International".

3. Highlight your chosen language in the list and "drag" it to the top of the list. Close the dialog.

4. Start EFI Designer Edition. The changed language setting becomes effective immediately. However, to apply the setting to the operating system, you must first restart your computer.

The Windows CD "EFI Designer Edition" contains all printer drivers current at the time of shipping, should you inadvertently delete an installed printer driver or wish to install a printer driver for a different language.


12.2.4.2 Windows

To change the language in Windows, proceed as follows:

3. On the "Regional Options" tab, select a language setting from the "Standards and Formats" pop-up menu.

12.3 Uninstalling EFI Designer Edition

12.3.1 MacintoshTo uninstall EFI Designer Edition, proceed as follows:

1. Insert the CD "EFI Designer Edition" into the CD-ROM drive. A drive icon appears on your Macintosh desktop.

2. Double-click the drive icon to display the contents of the CD

3. Double-click "Install EFI Designer Edition" and follow the on-screen instructions until you come to the “Install” dialog.

4. From the pop-up menu, select “Uninstall”. Then click “Uninstall” to start the uninstall procedure. Follow the on-screen instructions.

5. Click "Quit" to complete deinstallation.

Please ensure that the code page for your chosen language is installed on your computer. Otherwise, some characters may not be displayed properly. Consult your system administrator for advice, if necessary.

1. Open "Control Panel".

2. If you are working with Windows XP, double-click "Add or Remove Programs".

If you are working with Windows 2000/2003, double-click "Software".

3. Make sure "Change or Remove Programs" is selected. Then highlight "EFI Designer Edition" in the list of currently installed programs.

4. Click "Remove". A dialog for modifying, repairing or removing the selected program opens.

5. Select the radio button "Remove" and click "Next". A dialog opens in which you are asked to confirm that you want to remove the selected application and all of its features.

6. Click "Yes" to start deinstallation.

7. Click “Yes” to confirm that you wish to delete all custom files. Then click “Next”.

8. Click "Finish" to confirm that EFI Designer Edition has been deleted from your computer.
