What makes a good logo?

Logo Design

• Simple

• Memorable

• Timeless

• Versatile

• Appropriate

Successful logos are:

A simple logo allows for easy recognition.

They feature something unique without being overstated.

Simple

Bass was a pioneer in international brand marketing. ���

The Bass Red Triangle is one of the world's oldest logos, trademarked in 1875.

Simple

Not too many elements, simple and to the point. ������Graphic Designer: Carolyn Davidson,1971. Inspired by Nike, goddess of victory.

Memorable

Logos should stick out in the minds of customers and be recognized every time they see it.

Made to resemble new arch shaped signs on the sides of the restaurants. Designed by Jim Schindler, 1962.

Established in 1953 and still in operation, this is McDonald's Fourth restaurant, in Downey, California.

Easily recogenizable and simple, designed by Adolf Dassler

Designed by Milton Glaser, 1977

•  Will it endure the ages. Will the logo still be effective in 10, 20, 50 years?

Timeless

• Logo has essentially stayed the same since 1971.

• Coca Cola has also pretty much remained the same since 1895.

•  Avoid Trends.

•  Don’t use pictures and/or graphics that will be old next

year.

Timeless

Walmart does not have any images or fanciful clip art. Designed by Sam Walton, 1962.

A logo should be able to work in different mediums and applications.

Versatile

Ask, is it still effective if it is:

•  Printed in black and white?

•  Printed to the size of a postage stamp?

•  Print as large as a billboard?

•  Printed in reverse (ie. light logo on dark background)

Appropriate

Is it appropriate for it’s intended use?

•  Designed by Herb Lubalin and Tom Carnase, 1965

•  On the 1st Artboard, make a collection of logos in different categories that you like.

•  On the 2nd Artboard, find one good logo and one bad logo, and explain how you know it is good or bad based on these 5 tests (simple, memorable, timeless, versatile, and appropriate)

•  Use Adobe Illustrator to creating a personal logo for yourself.  

•  Follow the “5 tests” (simple, memorable, timeless, versatile, and appropriate) to create a quality logo.

Simple- A simple logo allows for easy recognition. Good logos feature something unique without being overdrawn.

Memorable- Logos should stick out in the minds of customers and be recognized every time they see it.

Timeless- That is, it will endure the ages. Will the logo still be effective in 10, 20, 50 years?

Versatile- A logo should be able to work across a variety of mediums and applications.

Appropriate- Is it appropriate for it’s intended use?
