This seminar is an attempt to answer the following questions:

What are Hearing and Listening?

What is effective listening?

What are the elements and skills of effective listening?

Why is effective listening important?

What are Hearing and Listening?

If you ask a group of people to give a one word description of listening, some would say hearing

It is following and understanding the sound---it is hearing with a purpose.

So, listening is…• the process of receiving,

constructing meaning from, and responding to spoken and/or nonverbal messages;

• to hear something with thoughtful attention

We will define effective listening via taking the five letters in the verb to

CAUTION: Don’t parrot back; be sure to put the message in your own words – that’s effective listening.

• 75% of the time we are distracted, preoccupied or forgetful

It forces people to listen attentively to others.

It tends to open people up, to get them to say more.
