This weekend, thousands of people will gather in West London for Notting Hill carnival, one of the UK's largest street festivals. So whether you're looking for soca, steelpan or beads-and-bikinis, Ruth Tompsett and Stephen Spark guide you through the crowds .

The Notting Hill Carnival is extravagant and subversive. It dresses outrageously and dances without decorum and is often under the influence of that potent intoxicant, carnival spirit. But what to see, and where? Of course you'll never be able to catch it all: there are too many distractions and seductions along the way. Just go with the flow with a smile on your face - and boundless patience. Why hurry, after all? To get in the mood, there is nowhere better than Saturday night Panorama, the explosion of steelpan music that fills Kensal Road on Saturday night. If your experience of steel band is limited, be prepared for a big surprise: the power and glory of groups such as Metronomes or Ebony at full stretch is breathtaking. Arrive early for a place on the "hill" by the judges' stand, and be prepared for gaps between bands. Food stalls around the small park add to the friendly late-night picnic atmosphere. For an essential carnival experience, join in the Jouvert event at daybreak on Sunday. Sometimes known as "Dirty Mas", it involves plenty of flour, paint, mud and chocolate. A lot of it will end up on you, so dress in your oldest clothes and be prepared for strange looks on the Tube going home. Steel bands provide the music. On Sunday and Monday it pays to arrive early at Notting Hill, giving you time to explore the route, check out the most tempting food stalls and the static sounds that play your kind of music. To get close to the mas (short for masquerade/costume), get down to Kensal Road around midday to catch bands getting ready or take up a vantage point near the judging area at the southern end of Great Western Road.

Page 2: efal.co.za Primary...  · Web viewOver the years, the Bad Seeds' sharp-suited ranks have mushroomed to the point where they look distinctly overstaffed. They now seem to have one

Mas bands tell stories or explore ideas and themes, often in witty or imaginative ways. This year, several bands are exploring history and heroes, such as Yaa Asantewaa with The Story Yaa Know and Paddington Arts Elimu with Africa: Roots and Routes. Look out for the fantastical BeeRaahar's Caribbean Beauties (especially the children), MK2's Gems and Paraiso School of Samba's The Evolution of Paradise, and don't miss the technical wizardry of Mahogany, a Harlesden-based group of artists, in A Stretch of the Imagination. If beads-and-bikini mas and good moves are your thing, you'll be waving your rag to the vibes and dazzle of Ruff Diamond's Paradise Garden and Cocoyea's Soca Safari, not to mention the ever-cheeky Burrokeets group. Be prepared to take on a whiter shade of pale if you get down with TnT Mudders, a troupe whose bodies, smeared with paint or powder, embrace you in the true carnival spirit. As Trinidadians say: "Yuh can't play mas an' 'fraid powder"! If you're following a band to catch the soca vibes (if you haven't experienced it, soca is a beguiling mixture of calypso and Indian rhythms), just swing your pelvis and keep foot to ground (except when you're jumping). Listen out for Shurwayne Winchester's Dead or Alive, and Jamsey P's Nookie, the current favourite soca sounds to accompany the mas bands on the road, and join in the choruses. And if the story and spectacle of mas is secondary to your passion to party, cut through the route into the heart of carnival territory in Ladbroke Grove, where over 40 static sound systems will be playing every urban sound from reggae to rap, hiphop, salsa and soca to soul, basement and garage. Carnival is a giant pressure cooker where the fierce competition to attract the biggest crowds generates some of the hottest dance moves on the planet, from Aba Shanti's Roots and Culture through veteran Norman "Good Times" Jay's crowd-pleasing funky house through to Latin raves, Zouk and Samba. There's something exciting to catch your ear round every corner. For those wanting to enjoy some of the flavour of carnival without quite so much pepper, there's Caribbean Showcase - an entirely separate event from the official Notting Hill carnival - is on offer in Hyde Park from 12-7pm on Monday August 29. It includes live Caribbean music, food, craft stalls, exhibitions and workshops and a little more space to move around.QUESTIONS1.1 Explain why the heading of this passage is “Movers and shakers”.

QUESTION 2 - SUMMARYRead the following passage and answer the question.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds

Alexandra Palace, London

Alexis PetridisSaturday August 27, 2005The Guardian

Nick Cave looms large over Alexandra Palace. Quite literally: the lighting in the Great Hall is arranged so that when he stands stage left, the singer's rangy frame casts a huge, dramatic shadow over the venue's right wall. It moves across the columns and ornate windows, looking both a bit creepy and oddly amusing, a striking cross between Max Schreck in Nosferatu and the Cat In the Hat. It's either a happy accident, or a masterstroke of stagecraft, giving those at the back of the hall something to watch, a suitably ghostly equivalent of those video screens you get at stadium rock shows. It provides the perfect complement to Cave's compelling stage persona: limbs flailing, fag in hand, voice occasionally wandering a little too far from the tune for comfort, he is alternately terrifying and weirdly comic. He switches with swaggering confidence from hellfire preacher mode - bellowing, prowling the stage, deploying a surprising range of high kicks - to something more self-deprecating: "Thangyew. This next song is about ships an' bridges an' history an' stuff."Over the years, the Bad Seeds' sharp-suited ranks have mushroomed to the point where they look distinctly overstaffed. They now seem to have one more of everything than is strictly necessary - two drummers, three guitarists, four backing singers - but they sound awesome. They can do delicacy, as proven by a sweetly affecting Ship Song, but it's the end-is-nigh stuff that's the most startling: a version of Tupelo so intense you feel it could start raining fire from the heavens at any minute. The Mercy Seat starts out in a stripped-down acoustic arrangement but by its climax it has turned into something positively torrential. Driven by ominous drum rolls, it fills the room, which is no mean feat. Favoured by artists who reach a certain pitch of success but feel their music is too rarefied for sports arenas, Alexandra Palace's rotten sight lines and duff acoustics have a habit of cutting bands down to size. No danger of that tonight. Operating at the peak of his powers 25 years into his career, Cave and his backing band seem invincible2.1 What is the main idea of paragraph 1?

(1)2.2 Write down 3 characteristics of Cave’s stage persona. Use YOUR OWN WORDS.
