Message from the HoD(EE)
Dr. Sobia Baig
H.o.D. EE Department
CIIT Lahore.
With the grace of Allah (SWT), we have successfully completed Spring 2014
semester and after renewing energies in the summer, we are now entering into
Fall 2014 semester. In this period of time there has been significant progress in
departmental activities and achievements. I would like to congratulate the Elec-
trical Engineering (EE) department on its consistent performance throughout
this period. The EE faculty and staff members are the ones whose continuous
effort and dedication has kept the EE flag flying high. However, we need to en-
ter into the new academic year with new zeal and fervor. We all have to per-
form our duties with sincerity and dedication with full efforts to reshape the
lives and personalities of our students.
With the passage of time all processes need refinement and improvement and the same is true for the
teaching and learning processes in which all of us are involved day in and day out at Electrical Engineering
Department. Incorporating new techniques in our teaching methodology and motivating our students to
think and find out of the box solutions on their own should be our goal while delivering lectures and as-
sessing them in class rooms and laboratories. Moreover, allowing the students to propose their own solu-
tions in small semester projects will enhance their critical analysis skills and will also help them in creating
their Final Year Projects (FYPs) as well.
Senior and junior faculty members need to integrate their energies and expertise to improve their per-
formance in research activities in research groups. Individual research can be enhanced when it is ex-
panded and jointly done by all the members of a research group. FYPs can be utilized in the same man-
ner, thus involving our students at the undergraduate level in departmental research activities.
Industrial collaboration especially for an Electrical Engineering Department is of vital importance. The
global approach towards a knowledge based economy, contribution of academia in industrial progress is
highly significant. We aim towards linking our research activities with industrial problem solutions. Since
every journey is started with first small steps and therefore, EE department has started its efforts in this
reference by signing an MoU with Electrical Engineering Solutions Internationals (EESINT)and with HW
Communications Ltd. Lancaster and progress with National Instruments (NI) is also mentionable. We
would like to expand this base to other industrial collaborations to address various pressing issues in in-
dustries through our faculty expertise.
In the end, I would like to thank all senior and junior faculty and staff members who continue to contrib-
ute in their capacities in the department and hoping for their cooperation for the betterment of depart-
ment in future as well.

Dr. Khurram Bhatti, Assistant Professor at Electrical Engineering Depart-
ment, CIIT Lahore is pursuing his post-doc studies on Marie-Curie Research
Fellowship, ERCIM ABCDE Fellowship since October, 2013. He is focusing
on “Parallel computing systems and their performance analysis”.
Parallel computing systems promise higher performance for computation-
ally intensive applications. Performance analysis is therefore central to en-
suring performance-portability and predictability of target applications. In
performance analysis, the composition and execution of target applications
is mainly analyzed to derive guidelines usable by the middleware to pro-
vide portable and predictable performance.
During the fellowship, his research activities were mainly focused on performance analysis of target ap-
plications and design of the scheduling algorithms in order to predict performance within the ARTEMIS/
EU project PaPP (Portable and Predictable Performance on Heterogeneous Embedded Many cores,
web: http://www.papp-project.eu/). This project aims at making performance predictable for parallel
applications on heterogeneous parallel platforms.

International Research Collaboration by Dr. Asim Ali Khan
Dr. Asim Ali Khan was invited in August 2014 to visit Microwave and Communica-
tion research Group, University of Manchester (UoM) UK. This visit was planned in
context of on-going research collaboration since June 2011. Dr. Khan has been
involved in developing radio frequency interference rejection techniques since
2012 with Prof. A. K. Brown of UoM for the potential target application in Square
Kilometre Array-Aperture Array Verification Program (SKA-AVPP). This work is
mostly focused on antenna arrays with inter-element spacing greater than one wavelength also
known as sparse arrays. This type of antenna array finds applications in radio astronomy, radars and
other radio frequency imaging receivers. In these applications the overall performance is challenged
by the presence of interferers e.g. a cellular transmitter site may interfere with signals that are of
interest to radio astronomers or presence of brighter object in the vicinity of the object of interest.
The proposed technique has shown to have capability of narrow and wideband and wide sector in-
terference rejection. This research has been published in top tier journal and international confer-
ences.
