Theoriginalhallsection(1873),designedbyarchitectWilliamEllis,waslaterextendedbyGeorgeJohnson.Particularlynotableinternalfeaturesincludethepaintedtrompel’oeilceilingbyJohnRossAndersonintheMayor’sroom,thecofferedceilingandcolumnsintheformerlibraryandagrandballroom.

TheEdinburghGardensprecinctisdefinedbytheescargotshapedreserveoriginallysetasideforPublicGardens,theFitzroyandtheNorthFitzroyCricketGroundsanda[former]railwaystationandline.

TheuniqueshapeofthegardensstemsfromtheresolutionbetweendifferentstreetgridsandthedesiretocreateacircusalongGeorgianlines.

Theschemeforagrandcrescentwithcentralgardens,playinggroundsandrailfacilitieswasdevelopedasthemostlogicalanswertothisdilemma.
