The Half Term event for families gives a fascinating glimpse of the Edwardian era just before the First World War when the Astors were in residence. Children can take part in an Edwardian school in an old fashioned classroom complete with chalk and blackboard. There are traditional games of the period such as croquet and a coconut shy, and a prize for the best dressed boy and girl each day for those who come in Edwardian costume. Over the Bank Holiday weekend of 23 rd – 25 th visitors get to meet colourful characters from above and below stairs portrayed by costumed actors. Besides giving a snapshot of Edwardian Life for all levels of society, the event is a great opportunity to enjoy some old fashioned family fun in the magnificent grounds of this former Edwardian home. An exhibition in the Castle’s Astor Suite also brings the fascinating ‘Upstairs Downstairs’ years vividly to life. Visitors can listen to interviews with former ‘below stairs’ staff on old fashioned telephones and radios and watch the Astor’s rare archive collection of home movies on a 1930s TV set. Gardens open at 10.30am; Castle opens at 12 noon. Last admission 4.30pm; final exit 6pm.
