PHILOSOPHY OF THE INTEGRATION OF TECHNOLOGY IN EDUCATIONBy: Regina Kent
“IN ORDER TO SUCCEED, WE MUST FIRST BELIEVE THAT WE CAN” –MICHAEL KORDA
My Educational Philosophy
Technology in Education
Technology will enhance student’s learning by: Address the needs of low performing, at-risk, and learning
disabled students
Increase student motivation for learning
Improve communication of learning goals
Facilitate higher-order thinking skills
Build valuable skills that students will use in college and in the workplace
Expand students' understanding from novice to mastery
Technology Learning Standards for Students
According to the National Educational Technology Standards for Students the standards include: Creativity and Innovation
Communication and Collaboration
Research and Information Fluency
Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making
Digital Citizenship
Technology Operations and Concepts
Technology and Disabilities
Technology is able to help so many students with all different types of disabilities.
One type of technology that can assist learning disabled students is known as Assistive Technology (AT). It is defined as any device, piece of equipment or system that helps bypass, work around or compensate for an individual's specific learning deficits.
There are different types of AT that assist students who struggle with: Listening Math Organization and Memory Reading Writing
Technology and Disabilities
Students who may be legally blind or have low vision benefit from Technology:
Some people who are visually impaired struggle with the size of the text on a piece of paper or on a computer screen.
There are computer-generated symbols, both text and graphics, that can be enlarged on the monitor or printer which allows the students to use the stand operating systems such as Microsoft word, internet explorer, etc.
Link to the Outside World…
In Today’s society there are so many different ways for Teachers to connect their students to the outside world
YouTube is a great example of this. There are videos from people around the world that will explain to them the
significance of different cultures and cultural diversity
Multicultural lesson plans Used to express to the students the different cultures around the world. This way the students are aware of other ethnicities and ways of life.
Personally, my favorite multicultural lesson plan is the passport. In this activity, students learn about all different countries and cultures and as they learn about each one they receive a stamp of that country. This is a fun and informative activity.
Getting Parents Involved…
I believe that the amount of interaction between a child and his or her parents has so much bearing on the child’s education. Therefore, parent involvement in the classroom is key…
In my classroom parents will be…
• Up to date on their child’s progress whether it be good or bad.
• They will receive weekly newsletters discussing what we have been doing in class
• I will create a website where parents are able to access their students grades on tests, quizzes or projects.
• Parent involvment is so important in order for a child to be successful academically.
Role of the Teacher and Technology
There are many resources for Teachers with the use of Technology
Creation of a Blog
Teachers are able to use YouTube videos and other educational videos to aid in completing a lesson
Classroom website in which the teacher is able to communicate with the students and parents about what is going on in the classroom.
Teachers have access to Microsoft Word Microsoft Excel Microsoft Powerpoint
Students and Technology
Some types of assignment or activities students will use in technology include:
Online assignments, quizzes, tests, review.
Educational Games and Websites
Some include: http://www.funbrain.com/index.html http://www.brainpop.com http://pbskids.org/games/
Professional Development
A Blog is a great tool for teachers to share information with parents, co-workers, and students.
A great source of receiving feedback from different people Allows you to reflect on teaching
Microsoft Word and Excel are valuable tools for me as a teacher
Helps me stay organized. Keep Records
How often will Technology be used in my classroom?
Technology will be used in my classroom on a daily basis.
With every lesson, some sort of technology will be incorporated. Powerpoint YouTube Videos Educational Videos
I will use a smart board to help visualize the lessons to the students.
One of my favorite educational activities that my History teacher incorporated into the lesson as review was Jeopardy. This was an enjoyable game that really helped review for the topic.
I will incorporate games into my classroom as much as possible
Integrating Technology Into The Classroom
There are many ways that Technology can be successfully integrated into the classroom.
Multiple Learning Styles: All students learn differently and best in a certain way. To clarify, students may be visual, kinesthetic, auditory, etc. Technology broadens the spectrum for teachers and students.
Teachers can teach many different learning styles using Technology Gives the students a better opportunity for understanding the information.
Student Participation: Technology triggers more student participation. There are various ways that students can participate.
They can provide input on a forum Social Networking E-mail
Teacher-Student Interaction: Technology allows for more interaction between Teachers and Students.
Podcasts Forums
What ways will technology NOT be used in the classroom?
Technology will not be used in my classroom every single minute of every single day.
When children are taking notes, I believe the most effective method is through pencil and paper, so they will not use any form of technology when writing down the necessary information.
Cell phones and IPods will never be permitted in my classroom. It provides a distraction to the students and is a way of cheating.
