Letter from the Presidents

he beginning of the 2015-2016 academic year marked the beginning of a new chapter of Oakton’s history—one that is focused on providing students both access and success. After all, our success is measured by thesuccess of our students in terms of goals met, credentials earned, and thegreat jobs that follow. It has been an exciting year of change, innovation, and empowerment

—from the new college leadership and All for One student persistenceinitiative, to the groundbreaking of the new Student Center and the Oakton Educational Foundation’s funding of the state’s Monetary AwardProgram (MAP) Grants. Throughout it all, the success of our students remained at the forefront of the college’s and foundation’s mission. As we think back on the achievements of the past year, we never

forget that student success doesn’t happen in a vacuum. In a time of dwindling state support for community colleges, Oakton could never havecome this far or envision making an even greater impact in the futurewithout the remarkable dedication and generosity of our donors. Our

students’ inspiring stories of courage, hope, and promise are made possiblethrough their contributions to the foundation. It is with our deepest gratitude that we acknowledge the donors who

contributed to the Oakton Educational Foundation in the past year. TheAnnual Report that follows illustrates how your generous support of ourdeserving students ignites their dreams, and we hope that it will leave youwith a greater understanding of why your generosity makes such a criticaldifference—not just in the lives of our students, but in our community asa whole. As we look towards the future, we look forward to continuing our work

with you by our side. Together, we can continue to connect our studentswith their own personal greatness, and then marvel as we watch them doamazing things for our community and beyond.

The station gives students access to weather cam-era loops, a gallery of weather radar maps, area weather summaries, toolsfor making weather maps, as well as data about severe weather status,watches, and warnings. Besides providing the college with the ability tomonitor weather conditions to keep our students safe, community residentscan access weather data from a link on the earth science homepage, andfrom the WeatherBug home page or app.A recurrent foundation grant helped Oakton’s Robotics Team to a

second place finish at the Seventh Annual Invitational NASA RoboticsMining Competition in May 2016. It was one of two community collegeteams competing against 43 other teams from universities and four-yearcolleges across the country. Their goal was to create a successful remote-controlled robot to mine rock on a simulated Martian surface within a 10-minute timeframe. The team won second-place recognition for social mediaand engagement, second for its systems engineering paper, third in the on-site mining competition, and third for its outreach project.Various departments were awarded funds to host speakers, authors,

scientists, and other renowned individuals at events open to the collegecommunity. Award-winning independent films were screened in the Pop-Up Film Festival. Audiences engaged in conversations with directorsRobert Greene, Stephen Cone, Kevin B. Lee, and Michael Smith (film director, Oakton instructor, and festival organizer). The Chicago WritersSeries brought renowned poets Aaron Baker and NateMarshall, Korean novelist Eric Jeong (right), andprize-winning novelist and playwright Joe Meno tocampus. Last fall’s juried art exhibit, Feminism Acrossthe Generations, displayed the works of over 70 pro-fessional women artists, attracting more than 4,000area residents as well as 600 Oakton students. n spring 2015, Oakton celebrated the completion of the most substantialproject in its five-year Facilities Master Plan—the Margaret Burke LeeScience and Health Careers Center. The Oakton Educational Foundationalso launched its Building Leaders and Legacies fundraising initiative, whichoffers naming opportunities within the center that support its facilitiesand the science and health programs housed within it. Less than fourmonths after the building’s dedication, the foundation collected $39,000towards the campaign. The past year brought an additional $85,000 in nam-ing gifts, for a total of $120,313 in naming rights within the Lee Center. This past spring, the foundation embarked on the next phase of Build-

ing Leaders and Legacies—supporting the construction of the new StudentCenter at the Des Plaines campus. The center will occupy existing spaceacross from the cafeteria. It will integrate student-related activities thathad previously been scattered across campus, including exclusive officesfor student leadership, an office for the OCCurrence student newspaper,meeting rooms for student clubs and organizations, and a common areafor group study, recreational activities, and campus programs. The centerwill also feature floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the lake at the DesPlaines campus and multiple sustainability components. Groundbreakingfor the center took place in the summer, and occupancy is expected at thestart of the spring 2017 semester.

The foundation has pledged to raise $500,000 to assist with the con-struction costs of the Student Center. Its commitment to the center isrooted in the knowledge that the quality of campus facilities has a majorimpact on student outcomes. Research also shows that students who arecomfortable and engaged in their collegiate environment are more successful and more likely to graduate. And because creating a sense ofconnection and community can be challenging on a commuter campussuch as Oakton, the new Student Center is critical to the college’s mis-sion of student persistence and success. It will enrich campus life as thecenter of the college community, serving as the unifying force that fostersa sense of belonging, promotes diversity and collaboration, and cultivatesenduring loyalty to the college. To meet its fundraising goal, the Oakton Educational Foundation

has identified several naming opportunities within the Student Center,ranging in value from $10,000 to $200,000. Naming rights may be secured with multi-year pledges of up to five years, and all gifts of $500or more will be recognized on a donor plaque within the center. More information about the Student Center naming opportunities is availableat oakton.edu/giving.

I’m excited for the Student Center. It’s important for students to have an open space where they can work in a group.It’s helpful to work with peers. I learn with them and from them. — George Lucaciu

t the onset of her tenure, Oakton President Joianne Smith set a lofty goalfor the college—increase fall-to-fall new student persistence by eightpercent. While persistence is the greatest challenge community collegesface today, research indicates that persistence levels can be improved whenstudents are encouraged and supported by their community. Guided bythe goal of providing both access and success to Oakton students, theOakton Educational Foundation has doubled down on its mission to address the socioeconomic challenges that, all too often, keep our studentsout of the classroom.

MAP Grant FundingThe 2015-2016 academic year began with a cloud of doubt for Oaktonand its students as Illinois’ ongoing budget impasse came at a $6.1 mil-lion cost to the college for the year. The deficit included funding for thestate’s Monetary Award Program (MAP) grants, which provide financialassistance to Oakton’s lowest income student population. Without MAPfunding, students would likely not be able to remain enrolled at the college.Unwilling to allow students to drop out due to financial hardships be-yond their control, the Oakton Educational Foundation agreed to allocate upto $350,000 from its Annual Fund to help students dependent on MAPto be able to afford to continue their education at Oakton. In support ofthis commitment, Oakton donors, alumni, and employees contributedmore than $27,000 to the Annual Fund in the past year, helping to sustainthe foundation’s ability to respond to future emergencies of this kind.

Student EmergenciesThanks to the generosity of our community, the Oakton EducationalFoundation can provide emergency funding to students who face severe,short-term financial difficulties. In the past fiscal year, 41 students received$12,020 in emergency assistance. Established by Oakton’s PresidentEmerita Margaret B. Lee, the Student Success Fund provided $6,127 to16 students who needed help with expenses such as rent, groceries, trans-portation, utilities, and child care services. Another 13 students receiveda total of $3,793 for textbooks. The newly created Phi Theta Kappa StudentMembership Fees Fund, also established by President Emerita Lee, covered the $100 membership fees so that 15 Oakton students who wereunable to afford the dues could join the esteemed community college hon-ors society. Lastly, the Veteran Emergency Fund, established by Mr. andMrs. Joseph and Barbara Guill, provided $600 of aid for student veterans.

Why It MattersStudent persistence is the route to success, and often as little as $100 is allthat is needed to ensure that the circumstances they face today will not derail the hopes and dreams they have for tomorrow. This is proven trueas nine of the past year’s Student Success Fund recipients graduated, and16 re-enrolled at Oakton the next semester. The persistence rate of thisgroup of students who receive emergency aid is 60 percent, which exceedsthe college’s overall goal of persistence and demonstrates the power of thedonors’ generosity in overcoming financial barriers to student success.

Promoting Student Success

It is really beneficial for the students that the Oakton Foundation is taking the responsibility of fulfilling the demands that the state was supposed to. We are really fortunate to be part of an organization that really cares aboutits students and that wants to help them achieve their goals in every way possible. — Zarina Munshi, MAP Grant Recipient

Student PrizesIn addition to providing scholarships, some donors encourage creativity

and motivate students to complete their education by establishing student prizes that reward excellence and achievement.An advocate for world peace and a member of Oakton’s Board of

Trustees since 1987, Jody Wadhwa wanted to foster an understanding ofthe ideologies of Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. amongcommunity college students at Oakton and throughout Illinois. Influ-enced by his early experiences in war-torn India, and his belief that highereducation can help individuals develop nonviolent ways to address change,Wadhwa and the Wadhwa Foundation established the Gandhi-KingPeace Essay Endowment in 2010. It recognizes an Oakton student whoseessay explores using nonviolence to confront on-campus issues of discrim-ination, racism, and intolerance. To date, four individuals have receivedthis $500 prize. In 2014, Wadhwa created the Gandhi-King State of IllinoisPeace Essay Endowment through the Illinois Community CollegeTrustees Association (ICCTA), giving all Illinois community college students the opportunity to compete for a similar $500 prize. The OaktonEducational Foundation is proud to steward these endowments to encour-age creative thinking on how to address societal problems.In memory of their mother, foundation staffer Lisa Fischer and her

brother Brian established the Marilyn L. Fischer Endowed Prize in the Creative Arts in 2009. Marilyn Fischer pursued creative writing andthe fine arts, and one of her poems appeared in The Saturday EveningPost. The $500 prize made possible through this endowment is offered inalternative years for creative writing and the visual arts. The award goesto an Oakton student who has never before won a monetary award, andwho the judging committee feels shows the greatest talent. The most recent recipient received the creative writing prize at the spring 2016Beautiful Minds event.

Special EventsWhen friends, food, and fun come together for the benefit

of student scholarships, the community makes a collective difference in the success of Oakton students. The Oakton Educational Foundation kicked off the 2015-2016 academicyear by raising funds and promoting awareness at the ScholarChips event at Rivers Casino in Des Plaines. Per tradition, the foundation also hosted its Annual Bar Revue in January, performed by the Chicago Bar Association. The theme, “AChristmas Quarrel—a Tale of Two Parties” parodied presidentialcandidates and brought in much cheer, good tidings, and support for thefoundation’s Annual Fund. These events, well attended by Oakton friends,

Koehnline Museum of ArtWorks of art were given to the Oakton Educational Foundation for theKoehnline Museum of Art’s collection of artifacts and modern art that iscurrently valued at over $4 million. Each year, more than 10,000 studentsand guests visit the museum and take a self-guided art tour of the mostprominent pieces exhibited across the campus. This year, nine donors generously presented the foundation with more than $1 million in unique works that will be on display for public enjoyment. Featured among these donations are:  47 paintings and drawings by Elmer Sanders, an Illinois 20th century artist known for his modern portraits;

 seven oil paintings by Joseph Meert (1905-1989), whose worksexemplify abstract expressionism;

 BLT, oil on canvas (above right) by Chicago artist Paul Lamantia,  five works by Ezio Martinelli (1913–1980), an American artist whose artistic innovation is recognized around the world;

but they also promote cultural awareness and understanding by linkingwith college programs in anthropology, humanities, and history. Oaktonstudents and community members can all enjoy opportunities to appreciateart in its various forms.

Alumni RelationsThe past year has been an exciting one for Oakton’s Office of AlumniRelations as it has continued to carry forth its mission to engage alumniand friends in programs and events that energize interest, build loyalty,and strengthen support of the college. At the root of this success has beenthe continued leadership of the Alumni Council, comprised of dedicatedOakton graduates who volunteer their time to advance the interests of allOakton alumni. Most of the Council members joined the group at the in-ception of the Office of Alumni Relations back in 2012, and the OaktonEducational Foundation expresses its deep gratitude to council membersfor continuing to be ambassadors for the Oakton Alumni Association.

Lifelong Learning, the Office of Alumni Relationssponsored the first annual Nursing Alumni Semi-nar and Career Day on May 3, 2016. More than 80alumni, students, and community members cametogether for a day of learning and networking. Oak-ton lecturer Peggy Ochoa presented on the topic ofsimulation and debriefing, and continuing educa-tion credits were offered. Alumni engagement that lasts a lifetime starts

with student engagement. With that in mind, theOffice of Alumni Relations and the Alumni Council actively seek to con-nect with students while they are on campus, especially around graduationseason.This year was the first time that a member of the Alumni Coun-cil, Dayani Pieri (left), addressed the graduates during commencementand graduation gifts were given to all graduates on behalf of the AlumniAssociation. In an effort to boost alumni giving to Oakton’s Annual Fund, the

ScholarshipsAlthough Oakton’s tuition remains among the lowest

in the region, paying for college continues to be a chal-lenge for many students. As public funding vanishes,students must assume the financial burden of rising tuition costs or be forced out of higher education altogether. The foundation can help them fill the financial gap with private resources thanks to the resolute generosity of individuals, organizations, andcorporations in the Oakton community. During the2015-2016 academic year, the Oakton EducationalFoundation allocated more than $600,000 in scholar-ship funding. The following scholarships were availableto student applicants:

Thank you for so much contributing to my education. I am really grateful. Without your help I would not be able to attend Oakton. The first day of school, I was so happy and it is thanks to you that I was able to smile. Please keep helping those of us who are driven by knowledge. Your generosity will not go unrewarded.
