Program Update by Kevin Baughman, Ph.D. – Program Coordinator

It is hard to believe that our May commencement has come and gone and we have celebrated the graduation and program completion of so many talented, high achieving scholars. As a teacher, it is bittersweet saying goodbye to Educational Leadership students upon program completion. It seems that they just were taking EDA 505! Time travels so fast, it is difficult to seize the moments with each of you. Internship Coordinator Nancy Noonan and adjunct and College Internship Supervisor Nancy Andress will be co-teaching EDA 546/547 this summer. Noonan will also be teaching EDA 503 Curriculum in Summer I. Both instructors also recently hosted the Spring Internship Seminar on April 21. We welcome Michelle Handzel, Esq. as a new adjunct to teach School Law in Summer II to our regular program students. Michelle will also be teaching Law in the fall to our Cohort 14 students. Dr. Mark Jones will be teaching EDA 550 School Finance in Summer II to the cohort. Our Summer Leadership Academy will be co-taught by Dr. Ryan Sherman and me in Summer II. We have scheduled some outstanding speakers and field visits for our students as well as some challenging and exciting leadership activities in the intense 9 day course of 6 credit hours. Thanks to John Falco and Perry Berkowitz for their guidance in development of the academy. (Program Update – continued on page 2)

(Program Update – from page 1) This past spring, we also welcomed two new instructors to our Educational Leadership program faculty. Susan Swartz, Scotia-Glenville Superintendent of Schools, taught EDA 510 Supervision, and Kathy Oboyski-Butler, recently Retired Assistant Superintendent from Lansingburgh, taught EDA 503 to Cohort 14. Rounding out the Spring adjuncts was Dr. Lynne Wells, who taught EDA 510 Supervision to Cohort 14. Two elements make up a prestigious and relevant preparation program for school leaders: excellent instructors and high ability passionate students. We are fortunate to have both in ample supply. The students frequently remark to me so many positive things about our professors. The instructors equally comment to me how much they enjoy teaching and working with all our students. The planned on-line School District Business Leader (SDBL) program planned for a fall, 2015 cohort remains in limbo until we receive final approval from the New York State Education Department. Even without any advertising and mailing to prospective students, we have seen much interest across New York State and have a group of prospective students already well into the application process. The two on-line courses slated for fall are already in development or nearly ready. We remain hopeful there will be sufficient interest in again offering another cohort (Cohort 15), the Call to Leadership program for fall, 2015. We will be offering an informational evening for any prospective student interested in obtaining the Advanced Certificate in School Building Leadership on Wednesday, June 3, from 4:30-6:00 pm at The College of Saint Rose, location to be announced. The Educational Leadership programs have undergone major changes over the past year with retirements, NCATE accreditation, new faculty and adjuncts, and relocation to the Lally Building. What continues to hold everything together with quiet calm and cheerfulness is Kathleen Roark. We’re lucky and so appreciative to have her steady experience to call upon. The success of our program can only be measured through the success of our students as they assume school leadership positions. We are always here to assist, consult or just listen. Please stay in touch.

ATTN: Current Students Who Register for Courses On-line As we approach each new semester, current students sometimes indicate to faculty that no registration information for the upcoming semester was ever received. According the Registrar’s office, college policy is to only send registration information to your local Saint Rose e-mail address. If a student checks this email address, they will usually find the registration information there. When students don't use or check it often, it is suggested that a student go in once and setting up an automatic forward to their personal email so they don't miss this important information. Also remember, new enrolled students must receive their first PIN from the advisor. For each subsequent semester, registration Alternate PIN works as follows: Spring: Students receive PIN for Summer/Fall; Fall: Students receive PIN for Spring courses.

Spring Internship Seminar Brings in Experienced School Leaders

Students in the EDA 546 & 547 Spring 2015 Internship Seminar were treated to a group of Saint Rose Educational Leadership program alumni who shared experiences and strategies regarding organizing instructional programs including scheduling, observations, managing data, and sustaining the vision for learning. The panel included Jalina Soto, Elementary Principal in the Albany City School District, Brian Dunn, Middle School Principal in Troy, Jason Chevrier, Elementary Principal in the Schodack Schools, and Daniel Martinelli, Middle School Principal in Cohoes. The hallmark of The College of Saint Rose

Educational Leadership Program is the combination of educational and leadership theory into practice. Practitioners provide the richness of on-site, current field experience that enhances our preparation of aspiring school leaders. We are so fortunate to have so many Saint Rose alumni willing to give time and experience back to the College and program. Thanks Jalinda, Brian, Jason, and Dan!

Faculty Connections to the Field Our full time and part-time faculty are active in the field of school leadership and instructional development remaining relevant and connected to school leadership to ensure our students receive a first-class excellent school leadership preparation program. Some of our part-time faculty continue to work full time as principals, Assistant Superintendent, or Superintendent. Others do private consulting, or work with the Capital Area School Development Association (CASDA), and other regional, state and national associations. As a full-time faculty member, Kevin Baughman remains actively engaged in the educational field. Baughman assisted the Capital Region BOCES on the Voorheesville Central School District Superintendent Search this past spring with Dr. Lynne Wells and District Superintendent Dr. Chuck Dedrick. Baughman will be presenting at the June conference of the New York State Association of School Business Officials on school leadership, and recently attended the New York State Council of School Superintendents spring conference. This past Spring, he also consulted with a large national school architect on designing several projects or planned future work in New York State designing instructional spaces that support project based, hands-on learning.

Internship Students Experience 1:1 Practice Job Interviews

(Picture at left, shows Jon Buhner, South Colonie Central School Superintendent conducting a practice interview with Saint Rose Educational Leadership students. At right, Superintendents Robert Horan and Maureen Long joined Buhner for a panel discussion of strategies and tips for successful interviewing for school leadership positions.)

The Saint Rose Educational Leadership approach: “From Theory into Practice” came alive this past April when three area school superintendents joined the EDA 546 & EDA 547 Internship Seminar to conduct practice interviews and share tips and strategies on successful interviewing for school leadership positions. Superintendents Robert Horan (Schodack), Maureen Long (Menands), and Jon Buhner (South Colonie), volunteered an entire evening from very busy schedules to share time and expertise with our students. Leadership Student Paper Accepted for New England Research Presentation Gregory Tyrosvoutis, a student in our Masters in Educational Leadership program, developed a comprehensive research paper and project surveying education majors from Myanmar as part of his EDA 595 Research Seminar with Kevin Baughman. Greg submitted his paper, titled: Obstacles to Implementing Student-Centered Teaching: A Survey of Education Majors from Myanmar, to the New England Educational Research Organization and it was accepted for presentation in Portsmouth, New Hampshire in early May. Congratulations Greg!

People Wanting to Complete SDL Certification – the “Short SDL” Program For school leaders who have the older Subject Area Supervisor (SAS) or the current School Building Leader (SBL) certification lack required certification to function in any district level administrative position. District level positions require either the older School District Administrator (SDA) or the current School District Leader (SDL) certification. We offer a “Short SDL” program. If you are a recent graduate of The College of Saint Rose Educational Leadership SBL program, you would likely only need to take EDA 601/602 – a six-credit summer Leadership Academy plus pass the NYS SDL assessment. For school leaders from Saint Rose who graduated seven or more years ago or for leaders graduating from other institutions, the credit requirements may be slightly different depending upon background and courses taken. Contact our Educational Leadership office for more information.

Attention Experienced Alumni – We Covet Your Expertise!

The perspective of theory into practice is embodied within our Educational Leadership program. As a practitioner program with a strong focus on successful leadership practices that lead to student growth and achievement, we must always ensure that the experiences and voice of practicing school leaders always remains strong in our program and courses. We accomplish this through utilizing adjunct professors and enriching courses and content with speakers and presenters ranging from current school administrators to officials from the New York State Education Department. Please consider sharing your experiences and expertise with our students and program by contacting Kevin Baughman at [email protected] or calling the Educational leadership Programs office.

E-Mail Address or Position Change? Please Let us Know We want to maintain an up to date e-mail contact list of our colleague family of graduates from our Educational Leadership program at St. Rose. Your receipt of this newsletter indicates that we have a functioning e-mail. However, if you have a more current or primary e-mail address different than the one we have on file, please let Kathleen Roark know by contacting her at [email protected] .

Educational Leadership 2015 Summer 1, 2 and Fall Course Schedule

Reminder: Applying for Administrative Certification Once a student completes an approved certification program, The College recommends the student (now graduate) to the New York State Education Department (NYSED) confirming that the student has met our program requirements as registered. The graduate needs to actually file a certification application with New York State. NYSED uses an online processing system for NYS Teacher Certification called TEACH. All students will use the TEACH system to apply for their NYS Teacher certification. Everything, including payment, will be done online though the TEACH system. Instructions for doing so are posted on the College website link below. Please be sure to choose the appropriate set of instructions for your degree and certificate type (initial/professional – provisional/permanent). This sheet will give you step by step instructions to apply for your certificate(s) through the TEACH system. The link:

http://www.strose.edu/officesandresources/registrar/teachercertification

You can submit your teacher certification application through the TEACH system at any time before or after you graduate. However, your application will not be reviewed by NYSED until after The College of Saint Rose sends our recommendation. The college will automatically send this recommendation approximately 3 weeks after the end of your last semester.

(Continued from page 6) You and your potential employers can check your certification status online at any time. Therefore, The College of Saint Rose does not issue letters confirming your pending certification status with NYSED.

At the bottom on each “Student Application Information Sheet” is contact information for the NYS Education Department should you have problems with the TEACH system. If you have problems filling out your application or have any questions about certification, please email us at [email protected]. .

In order to apply online, you will enter TEACH online services via the Office of Teaching Initiatives Web site at www.highered.nysed.gov/tcert and create a TEACH login and password at the New York State Directory Services site. Instructions are provided as you go through this process. Once you have created your login and password this step is completed and you never have to repeat this process (unless you forget your password).
