Towers Library

Our Vision

The Towers Library is a welcoming centre for learning and teaching at SAC. We collaborate and we support your teaching. We provide a wide range of books and resources to support learning and teaching. We foster a culture of information and reading that develops independent lifelong learners and motivated readers.

School libraries = improved academic success

It has been demonstrated that, when librarians and teachers work together, students achieve higher levels of literacy, reading, learning, problem-solving and information and communication technology skills.(IFLA http://archive.ifla.org/VII/s11/pubs/manifest.htm)

The Structure of the CLT – A Shared Resource Centre:

• Our 5 CLT programs that are unique to SAC are:

• Guided Learning Centre (GLC): provides guidance and time to students that have missed an assignment deadline. The GLC also provides a supervised space where a student may write a missed test or missed in-class assignment.

Our 5 CLT Programs (cont’d):

• GLC Plus: in addition to the above GLC responsibilities, this centre provides struggling students with one-on-one support in the areas of organization and task management strategies.

• These students are assigned to a weekly two hour GLC block of time.

• Mike Paluch oversees the GLC and GLC Plus in the US.

Our 5 CLT Programs (cont’d):

• ESL Plus: provides one-on-one support to students who are English Language Learners, who either have completed the ESL program, or are currently enrolled in both the ESL and regular English program.

• This program runs in the library on Mondays after school; Wendy Pries oversees this program.

Our 5 CLT Programs (cont’d):

• Math Centre: offers math help in small group tutorial sessions by a Waterloo co-op student studying Math.

New This Year to the Library:

• SLGs – Student Led Groups: will offer peer tutoring out of the library in the evenings.

• Mike Paluch will oversee this program.

Information literacy• What does it mean?

The ability to complete successfully a complex problem-solving process that requires a student to define a search strategy, locate the needed resources, access and understand the information that is found, interpret the information, communicate the information, and evaluate conclusions in view of the original problem. OSLA, 1996.

This also includes:– understanding and honouring intellectual property

rights and copyright issues– properly using citation styles

plagiarism, citing right, the research process• Enhanced web-site • Online reading room• Writing centre / GLC / Maths help• Traditional resources:

• Classroom facilities• A quiet study space• Private tutoring

• Can you envision embedding any of these ideas into your assignments or classes?
