Nationally, human milk donation is a growing trend. Hospitals are using breast milk to help vulnerable infants in neonatal intensive-care units (NICU), as it is one of the most effective ways to nourish them and can prevent life-threatening illnesses like necrotizing enterocolitis.
On March 31, The Milk Bank, which serves NICUs across the Midwest, opened two depots where mothers can donate: one in Maplewood and one in O’Fallon.
The Maplewood depot is located at Amber Sky Photography, 3100 Sutton Blvd.
Founded in 2005 as the Indiana Mothers’ Milk Bank, The Milk Bank was established to improve health outcomes for premature and ill infants, foster better health for children and decrease health care expenditures.
The Milk Bank receives human
milk from carefully screened donors, pasteurizes, freezes and distributes it throughout the United States. To learn more, visit www.themilkbank.org.

The Peacock Loop Diner’s neon sign has won first place in the International Signs of the Times competition.
The 11-foot wide, 1,800-pound sign has over 680 feet of neon tubing with an elegant peacock fanning out its colorful neon features in a sequence over 200 times per hour.
Peacock Loop Diner owner Joe Edwards came up with the concept for the sign, which was designed by his daughter, Hope Edwards, with contributions from Kiku Obata & Co. and was built by Piros Signs.
“I couldn’t be prouder of how my
daughter Hope transformed my concept into a dazzling sign design, and this is a positive win for the St. Louis region,” Joe Edwards said.
The St. Louis Walk of Fame will induct three new people throughout the month of April.
The inductees and ceremony dates will be as follows:
• Frankie Muse Freeman. In 1964, Freeman became the first woman appointed to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights and contributed to the 1965 Voting Rights Act. Freeman will be there in person to accept the honor on Thursday, April 16, 11:30 a.m., at 6138 Delmar in the Loop.
• Lee Falk. The writer/cartoonist wrote the comic strip “Mandrake the Magician” as well as “The Phantom,” the first masked, costumed superhero of the comics, pre-dating both Superman and Batman. Falk’s widow and daughter will accept the honor on
his behalf on Tuesday, April 28, 11:30 a.m., at 6142 Delmar in the Loop.
• Christine Brewer. Grammy Award-winning soprano Brewer began her career singing in the choruses of the St. Louis Symphony and Opera Theatre of St. Louis. She was named one of the 20 greatest sopranos of all time by BBC Music Magazine in 2007. She will be in St. Louis to accept the honor in person on Wednesday, April 29, 11:30 a.m., at 6134 Delmar in the Loop.
The St. Louis Walk of Fame is a non-profit organization founded in 1988 to provide a showcase for the cultural heritage of St. Louis and to advance the knowledge, awareness and appreciation of creative St. Louisans and their achievements and contributions.
All induction ceremonies are free and open to the public. For more information, visit www.stlouiswalkoffame.org.
