*Rays

*Most rays live on the sea floor.

*They feed on clams, oysters, shellfish, and fish.

*Other rays live in coastal waters.

*Manta rays feed on small sea animals and plankton.

*Rays have a boneless skeleton.

*Rays have gill slits like a shark.

*Most rays have a flat, disk-like body.

*Whales

*Whales are large, intelligent, mammals.

*They breathe through blowholes and have lungs, unlike fish that have gills.

*Whales communicate by singing.

*They are one of the only mammals that live their entire lives in the water.

*Dolphins

*Dolphins are related to whales.

*They travel through the ocean in groups.

*They can jump 20 feet out of the water. *They are very protective

of each other, and take care of one another.

*Dolphins are very intelligent and are studied by many scientists.

*Squid

*Squid can change color and shoot out ink.

* Squid swim like octopus’s do.

*They have long pointy bodies, and ten arms.

*They also have two hearts instead of one.

* Squid eat fish, shrimp, crabs, and lobsters. *They hunt in packs.

*Squid can grow to be about 60 feet long.

*Seahorses

*The sea horse is the slowest swimming fish in the world.

*They have a tiny head that looks like a horse.

* They can grow to about five inches long, and they have a long tail which they use to hold onto seaweed.

*The sea horse has though, bony, skin that changes color to match its surroundings.

*Sharks

*Sharks are fish.

*A shark’s skin is very tough.

*Some sharks are dangerous to men.

*The great white shark is a dangerous shark.

*They are big; they can be from 17 to 25 feet long.

*The great white can be gray, brown, blue, or black on its back but their sides and their bellies are white.

*Octopus

*The octopus has a long head with two eyes.

*They have very good eyesight.

*An octopus has eight arms called tentacles.

*On each tentacle there are many suction cups which are used to catch food.

*Their enemies are fish, whales, eels, and sharks.

*They change color to hide from danger, and they also squirt out a dark ink to confuse their enemies.

*Seals

*Seals belong to the family of mammals.

*They’re called Pinnipeds, which means fin foot. *Their fins are flattened

feet.

*Seals live in warm and cold climates.

*They spend their time both in water and on land.

*Seals have enemies like sharks and killer whales.

*Jellyfish

*Jellyfish are umbrella shaped creatures with hanging tentacles.

*Their bodies are made up of water.

* In their tentacles there are tiny tubes which contain poison. *When touched, the tubes explode and shoot out

poison.

*They are nicknamed sea wasps.

* Some jellyfish are no bigger than a pin head, and some are giants.

*Starfish

*Starfish have long arms that look like a star.

*They have no brain or eyes but they use their tentacles for tasting and touching.

*In the center of the starfish is its mouth and stomach. *To eat, a starfish’s stomach will come out and

engulf its prey.

*If a starfish loses any tentacles it can regrow it.
