Education System

• For the majority of the population during the Elizabethan era, there was no education.

• For those who were privileged enough to have education during these times, the academics itself was very limited.

• Royalty were expected to learn from the private tutor they were provided with.

Education Continued

• The children who were educated were sent to basic schools to learn basic information.

• Even during the renaissance times knowledge was very limited.

• In fact scholars in this era often studied history rather than making discoveries

Education Continued….. Again

• In the perspective of a noble, gaining education began at the age of five

• From the age of five to seven, the student would attend a petty school where they would learn in the homes of their teachers

• From the age of seven on, they would attend grammar school

Astrology

• Astrology is defined as the study of the position and aspects of celestial bodies in the belief that they have an influence on the course of natural earthly occurrences and human affairs and events

• Queen Elizabeth deeply believed in astrology despite being as educated as she was

• Her belief in astrology originated when Dr. John Dee predicted the day of her coronation

• He was the most famous astrologer of his time• He and his associate were convinced in the art

of scying through a crystal ball• Edward Kelley (his associate) performed as a

medium and supposedly communicated with angels

The Four Humors

• The four humors are modernly referred to as the four elements

• These four humors formed the basis for a theory of medicine and later psychological typology.

• They constituted the western equivalent of the Chinese five states of change.

• The main reason the plague was so deadly and spread so quickly was due to the poor hygiene and the gargantuan amount of infected rodents.

• The victims would often die within 2 to 4 days after exposure to the disease.

• An effective treatment and cure for the plague was impossible during the Elizabethan era and later periods of history.
