EDP Renováveis Brazil opens new headquarters, investing in the tropical winds of the emerging Brazilian wind market

Tropical winds

A t the end of October, EDP RenováveisBrazil took a significant and important steptowards growing and continuing to be a

player in the Brazilian market. In São Paulo, at 5p.m. the 27th of October, the company officiallyopened its new headquarters on the 17th floor ofthe modern building next to EDP's Brazilianheadquarters in the Itaim Bibi district of SãoPaulo. EDP Renováveis Brazil and its team of 23professionals from different backgrounds willnow operate from this location. In this new envi-ronment the company assumes its own identityand will take part in the growing Brazilian windmarket. With this spirit of collaboration among em-

ployees, Ana Maria Fernandes, CEO of EDP Ren-ováveis, appeared at the opening of the office andcelebrated the promising renewable energy sec-tor with attendees. “I am very happy about thenew facilities. This is a very important step inensuring the satisfaction of employees. This istime to seek new advances, ambitious projectsand to simulate the growing opportunities inBrazil”, says Ana Maria Fernandes

Ana Maria Fernandes also emphasized thatEDP Renováveis is an important arm of GrupoEDP, with strong strategic investment. “We wantto be a model in this area through a team that han-dles all projects with efficiency and excellence. The only way for us to be successful is to have thebest professionals in the company who shareEDP’s values.”The Brazilian team is headed by Renato

Volponi, EDP Renováveis Brazil Country Man-ager. The engineer began his career at the Groupin 2001 as the manager of Risk Studies and RiskModeling at EDP Brazil Power Supply Compa-ny. He then became the director of this area in2003. During this period, Volponi assembled astrong portfolio in seeking to serve utility clientsin the states of São Paulo and Espírito Santo. These efforts, along with his team's commitment, enabled the EDP Power Supply Company to be-come the third largest in the Brazilian market, aranking it still maintains. In July of this year, Volponi took over the helm

of EDP Renováveis Brazil. “Issues related to re-newable energy have always attracted me. This is

a segment that is growing rapidly in this country.”Another relevant reason for the move was his con-fidence in a team that is poised to take on majorchallenges and opportunities. The outlook for the Brazilian wind energy mar-

ket is promising. Wind energy generation capac-ity in Brazil grew by 77.7% in 2009 compared tothe previous year. Consequently, the country nowhas installed capacity of 606 megawatts (MW),versus 341 MW in 2008. In 2010, the pace ofgrowth continues. In two accounts, the sectordemonstrated its ability to compete with othertraditional sources, highlighting the Brazilian elec-trical power sector's shift towards renewables andsustainability. In search of renewable sources, various com-

panies in the Brazilian electrical power sector areseeking a share of this market. Companies are co-operating despite the competition, Volponi said.“Brazil has excellent wind capacity that is very wellaccepted by the market. With technological effi-ciency and without harming the environment,we are investing in innovation to find new renew-able sources. According to Luís Adão da Fonseca, CBDO of

EDP Renováveis, Brazil is one of the most impor-tant global markets for EDP Renováveis. “Brazilhas great medium- and long-term potential. It isa market with a lot of room to grow, like othercountries where EDP Renováveis currently op-erates.”Volponi notes that the national market and the

wind community have received EDP RenováveisBrazil with open arms, since they recognize thecompany’s experience in the construction of windfarms in various countries. “The EDP brand isloved and respected in the Brazilian market. It isa company that delivers what it promises. EDPRenováveis Brazil leverages and reinforces thisimage.” The Brazilian wind sector is experiencing a

unique period by carving out its own space withgovernment support, large investors and favor-able regions. “The market now understands thatwind power complements hydropower sourcesand will add value to existing sources.”According to data from Empresa de Pesquisa

Energética (EPE), installed electrical capacity inthe country is 107,000 MW, including 70.23%from hydroelectricity; 24.18% from thermoelec-tricity; 2.85% from small hydroelectric plants(SHP); 1.86% from nuclear plants; 0.71% fromwind; and 0,17% from power plants under 1 MW.

Of this total, 45% of the existing Brazilian powergrid comes from renewable sources, primarilybiomass and hydroelectricity. António Pita de Abreu, Chairman of EDP in

Brazil, believes that the world is moving towardbroader use of clean energies and that EDP Ren-ováveis has an important role on this new globalstage. “The new office reflects EDP’s growth inBrazil, which is relevant to the market.”

Tramandaí Wind FarmCovering 8,514,876 km2, Brazil is the fifth largestcountry in the world. It has 7,367 km of coastline

on the Atlantic Ocean. This large area is the basisfor the accelerated growth of wind farms dottingthe Brazilian countryside. EDP Renováveis Brazilcurrently has two farms operating and anotherunder construction in the southern Brazilianstates of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul,respectively. With an installed capacity of 9 MW and 12

Wind Generation Units, UEE (Usina EolicaElectrica - Wind Energy Plant (UEE)) ÁguaDoce, in the city of Água Doce/SC, began op-erating in September 2006. Operating since2004, UEE Horizonte, built in the same city,

operates six Wind Generation Units with in-stalled capacity of 4.80 MW. However, in March 2010, EDP Renováveis

Brazil broke ground on a ambitious andtechnological wind farm in Tramandaí in thestate of Rio Grande do Sul. “The park is be-ing built in record time to observe and fol-low all safety and sustainable responsibil-ity rules. Construction marks the begin-ning of the company’s new standard mod-el for development, construction, deliveryand production of clean energy,” Volponireports.

growth in the country, social responsibility andenvironmental projects are added to the list of pri-orities. With this focus in mind, an unprecedent-ed partnership was signed with Instituto EDP,where improvement initiatives are carried out incommunities surrounding wind farms. In Tramandaí, for example, projects provid-

ing information, safety, culture and education tolocal residents are currently under way. Accord-ing to environmental engineer Patrícia deOliveira Ramos, EDP Renováveis believes thereis a growing need to work closely with commu-nities. “It is essential to help people understand

who EDP is and what we do, as well as to build arelationship of trust.”As the first exchange with the population

living in the vicinity of the Wind Farm, “Dia-logue with the community” informed the com-munity about the use of wind to generate en-ergy, the history of wind energy, as well as theconstruction and completion of the farm. Safe-ty issues were highlighted with tips and casespresented by safety technicians. Another pro-gram that has emerged, is EDP nas Escolas(EDP in the Classroom), which teaches chil-dren about biodiversity.

The entire space comprises 400 m2 with its own infrastructure. The officeaddresses sustainability issues with programmable climate control.

Expected to commence operations in early2011, the Tramandaí Wind Farm has a installedcapacity of 70 MW and estimated production of211,437 MWh per year, enough to supply a city of200,000 inhabitants. All told, 31 towers nearly 100meters tall with 40-meter blades have emergedacross the landscape of Rio Grande do Sul. Thecompany is exploring new construction in thenortheast and south of the country, where viablesites have been identified for delivery of clean en-ergy to the Brazilian grid.

Global StandardsAs the business of EDP Renováveis Brazil pro-gresses in Brazil, the team at the company's newheadquarters in São Paulo follows the global stan-dards of EDP Renováveis and enjoys the benefitsprovided by the Corporate Services Spain team, together with the Infrastructure, InformationTechnology, Brand and Communications areasof EDP in Brazil. The entire space comprises 400 m2with its

own infrastructure: meeting rooms with video-conferencing, LCD monitors, kitchen, employeeand management break area, ergonomically cor-rect chairs with ecological leather, 100% recycledcarpet, non-toxic paints, distinct fixtures that ac-centuate individuality, customized cabling, as wellas large windows that receive natural light. Theoffice addresses sustainability issues with pro-grammable climate control.According to Mónica Tardieu, Corporate Serv-

ices director at EDP Renováveis, every structurebuilt in the office is intended to contribute to theoptimal execution of work. With modern stan-dards and efficient layout, “open tables separat-ed by glass allow the team to interact more dy-namically and the office’s natural light facilitatesthe flow of information.”

Carlos Martín Rivals is an engineer, andthroughout his professional career hehas been linked with the world of energyas it relates to management and strate-gic consulting. For the past several yearshe has been in charge of corporate lead-ership supporting the technical teams ofEDP Renováveis platforms . Carlos Martín Rivals was well familiarwith the workings of EDPR but he was infor a pleasant surprise when he was wel-comed among them from the very start. It is a firm with a young, dynamic and en-trepreneurial team that is constantlyworking to facilitate compromise andbring out new ideas, and these are themain reasons why he considers EDPRenováveis an ideal company to develop. His work is concretely centered on shar-

ing best practices and improving initia-tives for Energy Assessment, Engineer-ing and Construction, and Operationsand Maintenance. He is also involved incentralizing certain activities that arecommon among all the platforms, suchas technology, performance, analysis andthe development of the Dispatch Center.

Right now his objectives are centered onthree main points:

• creating the CTU, while seeking to forma small-scale yet motivated team witha global and multicultural mindset forgiving support to all of the platforms, and bringing together groups fromNorth America and Europe.

• implementing the tools and analysis

methods that serve the technical teamsto better follow up on business andidentify priorities. This year they are im-plementing the Operational Perform-ance Management System (OPMS),which is going to make it possible toseamlessly track the performance ofthe wind farms in an ongoing manner.

• launching various joint improvementinitiatives that bring together NorthAmerica and the rest of Europe.

One example of this is the energy efficiency improvement initiative that hasjust been launched, centering on a number of wind farms in the USA withsignificant support for Energy Evaluationin Europe.

onchangeEmployees with the courage to change

A dventurous by nature, Tom Lo Turco, was intrigued when the opportu-nity to work abroad presented itself. Having worked for EDPR NA inHouston, Texas since April 2007, Tom welcomed the challenge and ac-

cepted the newly created position of Deputy Project Director at EDPR UK inEdinburgh, Scotland.

The position was created after EDPR was awarded the exclusive rights todevelop 1.3 gigawatts (GW) of offshore wind power in the U.K. Moray OffshoreRenewables Limited (MORL) is a joint venture between EDPR and SeaEnergyRenewables Limited (SeaEnergy) established in November 2009. EDPR holds75 percent of MORL while SeaEnergy owns the remaining 25 percent.

Tom is responsible for the project management of EDPR’s first offshore ven-ture which, initially, will require him to stay in Scotland for 2 - 3 years. He fo-cuses on budgeting, scheduling and resource management. This is a new rolefor him as his previous responsibilities at EDPR NA were more technical in na-ture. In Houston, Tom worked as a Civil Engineer and was instrumental in theproject development of over 500 MW of EDPR NA’s wind farms as well as de-velopment, design and construction of the Operating and Maintenance facili-ties at each EDPA NA wind farm. In addition, Tom worked on the CAPEX esti-mating process for future EDPR NA projects. This experience gave Tom a broadperspective of the company’s initiatives which he is able to apply in his new role.

“Working on the MORL project has been similar to working at a start-upcompany. We had to open a new office, agree upon and write new proceduresand form new companies,” said Tom. “The team is what makes MORL power-

ful. We have over 20 staff members representing nine different nationalitiesbetween the two companies that are totally dedicated to the project. In this re-spect, it differentiates us from our competitors.”

One of his most interesting experiences so far in Edinburgh has been work-ing at stakeholder events. “We needed to meet with as many local residentsalong the Moray Firth as possible during a two week period, which entailedmany unorthodox tactics,” said Tom. “The most memorable for me was stand-ing in front of a display in a mall in Inverness, trying to flag people down to gettheir opinion on our project. Most people thought I was trying to sell them amobile phone or jewelry, so to say the least, it was very humbling.”

His best advice for employees transferring to other EDPR platforms is to“accept that you will be out of your comfort zone for some time and challengethe precedents that have been set. This is a new initiative for EDPR and we canall learn from each new transfer. Also, understand that the rewards, althoughperhaps not tangible immediately, will be realized over a lifetime.”

A true New Yorker at heart, Tom misses U.S. pizza the most. “You can’t get adecent slice here.” He enjoys the beautiful nature surrounding him in Edin-burgh and has taken up hiking in the Highlands.

Upon his arrival in Scotland, Tom was immediatelyenamored by the size of Edinburgh. “It is a verytourism-driven city, but it is also a very easy placeto live,” explains Tom. “You can walk or take thebus anywhere, which is definitely a stark contrastto Houston.”
