Founded in 1907, the Edmonton Humane Society (EHS) is committed to helping homeless and abused companion animals, enlightening people and enriching lives. The Society’s Animal Protection Department enforces Alberta’s Animal Protection Act by responding to concerns within the City of Edmonton about animal neglect. Hi! Hi! Hi! Hi! My name is Sadie. You may recognize me from my internet fame – I enjoyed a moment in the spotlight when my irresistible bouncy antics were caught on camera by a vigilant staer here at the EHS. The hilarious clip was posted on Instagram and picked up by a Buzzfeed reporter in New York City! Pretty cool stu. But, in spite of my celebrity stint, I am still waiting for my forever home. I am a high energy and active lady who really craves a go-go-go kind of lifestyle; I need the right family to keep me physically and mentally exercised. Registering in classes here at the shelter would be a fantas-tic way to bond with me and help channel my mind and energy in constructive ways. I have a history of playing too rough with cats, so I will need a no-cat home. I love to play with toys and will keep you busy for hours playing tug! Are you up for the challenge?

Dear Working Wise:I think I’m going to have to lay off some of my staff due to falling oil prices, but I’m concerned that when business picks up again, I’ll have trouble finding the experienced workers I need. Do I have any other options? Signed Worried
Dear Working Wise:
Working WiseWorking WiseWorking Wise
Dear Worried:
It’s been said that dicult times require dicult choices. However, there are a few things companies can consider to avoid or minimize sta layos.
You can try increasing eciency. GO Productivity oers free onsite assess-ments, workshops, and a self-assessment tool. To learn more, visit gopro-ductivity.ca or call 1-844-245-8278 toll-free.
You could ask your sta to brainstorm ideas for saving money or nding new customers for your products/services. You might discover an exciting new market, learn that your sta are willing to accept salary or benet concessions, or that senior sta are willing to accept early retirement. Before you make any decisions though, you should give some serious thought to how much money your layos are actually going to save.
Layos can be expensive—costs can include severance pay, banked vacation entitlements, and outplacement services. Layos can be time-consuming—your management team will be focused on paperwork and training the rest of the sta to tackle the remaining work instead of making your company money. Layos may only save you money if you don’t have to hire sta back—recruiting and training new employees can cost up to 50 per cent of an employee’s annual salary. For more insight into layos, read Thinking About layos? What You Need to Know Before Letting People Go on the ALIS website at http://alis.alberta.ca.
One promising option for you may be the federal government’s Work-sharing program.Work-sharing helps employers retain their skilled workers and avoid the costly process of recruiting and training new sta when business returns to normal. The program also helps workers maintain their skills and job by supplementing their wages with Employment Insurance benets on the days they are not working. The program is open to private, publicly-held and not-for-prot organizations, which have been in business for more than two years.
Work-sharing Agreements can be as short as six weeks and as long as 26 weeks.
For more information on the Work-sharing program, visit www.servicecanada.gc.ca/eng/work_sharing.
If you still believe that you must lay o your sta, please note that employers who intend to lay o 50 or more sta from a single location are required to provide the Employment Standards Minister a minimum of four weeks notice. For more information on the Notice of Group Layos requirement, visit: http://bit.ly/1ABOiR9.
For more information on available assistance for employers considering layos, contact a Workforce Consultant through the Employer Helpline at: 1-800-661-3753 or email [email protected].
Workforce Consultants can help you navigate the various employer services available to help you tackle your labour and workforce challenges.
Help for Albertans aected by layos is available at: http://humanservices.alberta.ca/employees-facing-layo.
Good luck!
