Qantaslink grounds Q400s QANTAS has announced the“temporary removal from service”of five Qantaslink BombardierQ400 aircraft, after an inspectionof a main landing gear componentrevealed possible problems. QF ceo Alan Joyce said theinspections were initiated by thecarrier after incidents at ‘anotherQ400 operator overseas’. “Our approach to this issue, which requires the replacementof a main landing gear fittingcomponent, is consistent withQantas’ proactive, conservativeand safety-first approach to everypart of its operations,” he said. Although claiming the issue is“not an immediate flight safetyconcern,” he said that it doesneed to be rectified before eachaircraft can return to service. Qantaslink operates a further16 Q400s which remain in service, with Joyce reiterating that “wehave full confidence in the Q400”. The groundings have led to thecancellation of a number ofSydney-Canberra Q400 services, with Qantas operating extra jetflights and using larger aircraftwhere possible on the route. In 2007 Scandinavian Airlinesgrounded its entire fleet of Q400safter a series of emergencylandings which were blamed onlanding gear malfunctions.

Nobody was hurt in theincidents, but after three SASQ400 crash landings in a sevenweek period the carrier said that“confidence in the Q400 hasdiminished considerably and ourcustomers are becomingincreasingly doubtful about flyingin this type of aircraft”. SAS ended up permanentlyremoving its 27 Dash 8 Q400 fleetfrom service (TD 28 Oct 07),demanding significantcompensation from the Canadianmanufacturer of the aircraft. Eventually SAS settled withBombardier, with a deal includingthe purchase of 27 new CRJ900Nextgen and 14 Q400 Nextgens. The original SAS Dash 8-Q400fleet was sold to PhilippineAirlines for operation by itssubsidiary PAL Express. Qantas said rectification workwould take about a week for eachaircraft, with passengers advisedof alternative options in theevent their flights are cancelled.

HONEYMOON planners shouldtake note of this romanticallyextravagant wedding gesture. A Chinese groom spent a year’ssalary on the flowers for hismarriage last weekend, buying99,999 red roses for his bride. The couple needed 30 cars totake the flowers to the weddingceremony, advertising on theinternet for help to stick theflowers onto the vehicles. The nuptials took place inChongqing, central China, wherethe number 999 is considered tobe good luck. Generous groom Xiao Wangsaid he knew his bride loved redroses, and it was “worth it alljust to see the look on her facewhen she saw the cars”. (below)

Intrepid backs Stella-JTG merger Jetstar go-slow? QANTAS is facing possibleindustrial action from its pilots, with a meeting today called bythe Australian and InternationalPilots Association over concernsabout hiring policies by Jetstar. At issue is the new Jetstar long-haul base in Singapore, withclaims that the carrier may paypilots based there less than thosewho are based in Australia. Jetstar says it’s had about 70expressions of interest from itspilots for the Singapore-basedpositions.

THE co-founder of IntrepidTravel, Darrell Wade, says thatconsumers shouldn’t beconcerned about the proposedmerger between Stella and JTG. Writing on internet blog siteCrikey, Wade says that his“internal alarm bell isn’t goingoff in the case of this proposedmerger,” because the deal willactually help “reduce the risk tothe consumer by creating astronger and more stablecompetitor in the marketplace. “Stella lost a swag of moneylast year, and this isn’t healthyfor consumers,” he said, addingthat “if the merger results in astronger travel industry, everyonewins”. Wade also said that fromIntrepid’s perspective as asupplier “we don’t feel threatenedby the proposed merger.

“To be frank, if the mergedentity tries to get too heavy withus, we’ll just go around them”. Wade points out that the travelindustry is relatively easy toenter, with new players alwaysemerging and “suppliers supportnew entrants because they createcompetition in the market fortheir products. “In today’s globalised world‘consolidation’ has become a bitof a dirty word. No one needs towash their mouth out in thiscase,” Wade said. “In my opinion, the mergerdoesn’t impact the consumersand so long as that remains thecase and people buy holidays, I’ma happy man,” he added. Stella and JTG are awaiting theoutcome of the ACCC probe intothe deal, which is due to beannounced on 02 Sep.
