This award is open to NZARH members only and celebrates the creative genius of the late Derek Elvy. He worked closely with NZARH on the brief and overall concept of the award. Derek’s instructions are that entrants should create a photographic image that is beautiful but arresting, contemporary and directional and have a technical challenge to it.

P R I Z E

The winner will receive a commemorative perpetual trophy and $500.00 NZD. They will also receive a published interview with Images magazine and a one-on- one half day coaching session with Michael Beel and Phillipa Middleton from Buoy Salon and Spa, Wellington.

The winner will also be automatically included in the final round of the competition which awards the overall Editorial Stylist of the Year for 2018. Prize for this includes $1,000.00 NZD, a photo shoot and the image on the front cover of Images magazine, and two 3-day entry passes to Hair Expo 2019 in Sydney. (Non-monetary prizes are not transferable for cash).

R U L E S O F E N T R Y

• By entering the awards you agree to abide by the competition rules.

• Entry fees apply and are non-refundable. Entry for one category is $99+GST, multiple categories is $199+GST or a salon entry of up to 10 images is $399+GST.

• Entries are due by 31 August 2018. No entries will be accepted after this date.

• Finalists will be announced by the end of September 2018 and the winners will be announced at the Industry Awards on 11 November 2018.

• The judges decisions are final and no correspondence will be entered into.

• Entrants who wish to have their entries returned must include a self addressed prepaid envelope or courier bag with their entry.

• Entrants must submit a photo of themselves via The Industry Awards website.

• The entrant must be either a member of the NZARH themselves or working/studying in a member salon/Training Provider to be eligible to enter.

• Should the entrant change salons after entering the competition their details will remain as the salon/ Training Provider they entered under.

• The 2018 NZARH Competitions Committee members are not eligible to enter.

• If a 2018 NZARH Competitions Committee member is confirmed as a judge for the Photographic Awards, staff from his/her salon are not eligible to enter.

• All entries must be signed by the entrant and appropriate waiver agreements completed.

• There must be no computer enhancement of photos.

• Entries must be A4 in size and in portrait format.

• Entries must be unframed, unmounted.

• All entries must be provided as printed copies and high-res digital format files. (tiff or jpeg on memory stick or cd/dvd)

Create a photographic image that is beautiful but arresting, contemporary and directional and have a technical challenge to it.

Hot tip: The image needs to be arresting and challenge our thoughts but at the same time be a credit to our industry! The consumer should look at it and think; ‘I can’t wear that but it’s beautiful and almost looks like a piece of art!’.

The judges and organising committee have the sole discretion as to the assessment of each photographic entry and their discretion in all aspects of assessment is final.

Entries will be judged on the following criteria:

Hair: Shows elements of technical skill with the hair being the main focus (i.e. a neutral background is recommended)

Fashion: Including complimentary makeup, clothing and accessories

Photograph: Quality suitable for magazine cover, how photo can be reproduced, how background ties in with the photo

Note: If submitting multiple entries, each entry’s details must be recorded and numbered on the back. Submitting multiple entries of the same hairstyle with various poses may water down your chances due to each judge choosing a different pose.
