Dear Reader,

The world in which we live has changed significantly during the last decades, and it continues to evolve rapidly. The

driving principles of rationalism and continuous progress have made mankind prosper. Thanks to discoveries in science

and technology, a growing part of the wold population has reached a level of consumer goods’ consumption and life

expectancy that did not seem possible two generations ago.

Today, we are confronted with the evidence that growth is coming with a price and will have a limit. The burning question is

whether the planet’s resources will be sufficient to fulfil the needs of a population predicted to grow to 9 billion human beings.

The ongoing demographic, nutritional and climatic changes raise the question how to ensure sustainable development on

planet Earth.

In reaction to these challenges, a fundamental transformation seems unavoidable. The way we produce, distribute and

consume water, energy and raw materials will have to be modified. A new kind of infrastructure, healthy ecosystems and

intelligent buildings will be required as well as a responsible use of land, renewable and networked energy.

Optimism, and pioneer’s courage, have characterised CSD since its beginnings in the 1970s. Ever since, CSD has persisted

in pursuing its mission of improving the quality of life and the environment. The ability to innovate and to incorporate a

multitude of disciplines is based on the common experience of an international network rooted in and corresponding to

local characteristics.

The examples we present in this brochure illustrate our commitment to a better future. We hope you enjoy reading our

brochure, and we take this opportunity to thank you for your continued confidence in our company.

On behalf of the Board and the management,

Olga Darazs Jean-Pascal Gendre President of the Advisory Board President of the Management Board

Engineering solutions for water related projects are one of

CSD’s key priorities. Our water professionals provide compre-

hensive services in consultancy, design and implementation

to create sustainable water solutions.

One of the major challenges for current and future

generations is the management and wise use of natu-

ral water resources and the implementation of efficient

water infrastructure. It is about understanding the im-

pact of multiple characteristics to ensure sustainable

water projects.

“My desire as a citizen is to see a city full of creativity instead of plastic, which can

preserve its cultural and natural inheritance for the benefit of future generations.”

Heinz Plenge, photographer and resident of Chiclayo.

“Whether it involves planning, training local personnel or organizing requests for ten-

ders, our project-management skills help us contribute to improving the inhabitants’

health and the quality of life in the city of Chiclayo.”

David Fernandez, engineer and head of the local team.

Our commitment to creating a clean city

Efficient waste management and keeping a city clean are among the key factors

contributing to the quality of life. However, there are many conurbations across the

world that still show great potential for improvement in this area, in terms of collecting

and sorting domestic garbage, providing proper treatment of urban or industrial waste,

improving the financial management of public services, and other activities. CSD is

sharing its experience in this field with government authorities and populations in

different regions of the globe and, as a result, enjoys the confidence of institutional and

non-governmental organisations alike.

Tasked by SECO (Switzerland’s State Secretariat for Economic Affairs), CSD is supporting

the Peruvian city of Chiclayo (population 260,000) in setting up a system for managing

its waste in an efficient and sustainable manner. The provision of state assistance and

logistics support as well as the training of technical and financial experts are intended

to improve public services. This is a basic condition for constructing and sustainably

operating a regional garbage dump on the one side and for gradually developing the

recycling of urban waste on the other side. As a national pilot project, Chiclayo will be

used as a benchmark for improving the quality of life for Peru’s city-dwellers.

Views of the project team

“Thanks to our commitment, the local authorities have made waste their priority

concern,” believes Emilie Gex, Project Manager. Introducing a professional

management approach, along with setting up suitable infrastructures and

promoting an awareness campaign, mark a major first step towards a cleaner city.

“This ‘textbook’ operation will enable the Peruvian authorities in the medium

term to provide models and indicators of good management and to help develop

the institutional framework.”

Development opportunities: our greatest asset“Seizing opportunities to take a project forward – this is part of our core business. This is also the case within CSD. Since

I became an employee in the then 3-person Valais office, I have been offered many exciting assignments. From Project Manager

on international mandates to Deputy Head of the 100-person branch in Lausanne, I have been able to familiarise myself with new

areas and assume responsibility. The fact that I became a father was not an obstacle. Thanks to working on an 80% part-time

basis, I can easily combine my career at CSD with my family.”

Frédéric Fournier, Deputy Branch Manager for Lausanne.

Interdisciplinary approach : our DNA“In our business, people rarely solve problems on their own. Our customers’ assignments are often too complex for that.

As a landscape architect on wind energy and gravel pits projects, I pull all the threads together calling in our civil and

environmental engineers, geographers, geologists and biologists. The customer benefits from the know-how of a very wide range

of experts from a single source. For me, the collaboration between disciplines and locations is a real asset.”

Christoph Marchal, responsible for the specialist fields of «Wind Energy» and «Landscape».

Parent-friendly: our commitment«On the part of CSD there was no question that I would return to my managerial role after my maternity leave, even though I only

took on a 50% workload. Flexibility is part of our corporate culture, and the models of working allow us to come and go freely.

Naturally I am also happy to step in sometimes as needed. Part-time work at CSD is not a women’s issue, by the way – many

male colleagues take the opportunity to reconcile their professional and private lives.»

Beatrice Lerch, Head of Spatial Planning and Environment, Berne.

International knowledge transfer: our strength«I had only just arrived at CSD when I found myself involved in a major project. I have always been able to draw on the experience

of my colleagues at any time, as helpfulness is as much a part of the CSD philosophy as the desire to innovate. My highlights

include the purposeful exchange and development of expertise across linguistic and national boundaries. This is not just a bonus

for me, but also an extra for the solutions we offer our customers.»

Uta Ehrhardt, Project Manager, DGNB Auditor for Sustainable Building, Germany.
