ii EDITORIAL
EDITORIAL by Michael Philip
I am very grateful to Michelle and Martin for the opportunity to add a personal message to their valedictory editorial. In their 5 years of joint editorship they have transformed the Journal and prepared the way for its development into Forests, Trees and Livelihoods. The purpose of the name change is to stress the importance of people in the use and management of trees and forests and to reflect this in the journal's contents. Scientific journals embracing forestry have tended to concentrate on aspects of forest ecology, biology, forest science and forest management and economics with, more recently, combinations of land uses such as agroforestry. The intention of the publishers and the editor is to continue to promote Michelle and Martin's emphasis on social aspects of forests and tree culture, though not excluding the other scientific bases on which forest and tree management for the benefit of people is built. The spread of articles has, of necessity, to depend upon what readers want and authors submit, but it is your new editor's intention to encourage, wherever possible, a wide and international approach. We hope to include articles from scientists with established reputations and contributions from less well known authors who are pursuing new initiatives. As in the past, submissions will be subject to peer review.
