Classic Marque
Classic Marque is the official
magazine of the Jaguar Drivers Club
of South Australia.
The opinions/views expressed in
published articles are wholly those of
the respective authors, and are not
necessarily those of Jaguar, the Editor,
the Club, or the Members.
Advertisers and sponsors who place
advertisements in the magazine do so
because they value their association
with the JDCSA. Placement of these
advertisements should not necessarily
be taken to mean the club endorses the
services offered.
Cover Story Vehicles from the club in formation to begin the
driver’s parade at the 2017 Clipsal 500. Full pictorial
story can be found in our special SUPERSIZED feature
on pages 12-17.

THE BOTTOM LINE
The Official Monthly Magazine of the Jaguar Drivers Club of South Australia
The last month has been very busy
for our club .
The Clipsal event was a great
success with considerable
promotion of Jaguars and the club
on a number of websites and
Facebook. I certainly had a great
thrill to take part in the Parade of
Drivers getting 2 laps of the circuit
in the XK120. Thanks again to Di
Adamson for her coordination.
There have also been several
successful register events and one
of them resulted in a trophy for best
club car (‘Big Red’ 420G) at the
Moonta Show & Shine –
congratulations to Bob & Daphne
Charman.
Club Torque The President’s Rap Peter Clarke also deserves thanks
for coordinating the enjoyable
Adelaide Hills Cruise event.
Our National Rally 2018
Committee has been busy
preparing a promotional brochure
and video for presentation at the
Port Stephens National Rally at
the end of March 2017. This
committee is coordinated by Di
Adamson and organised a number
of vehicles (including Carl
Lindner’s C-type and D-Type) to
be filmed driving around Tanunda
as part of the promotional video.
It is pleasing to hear that a number
of club members are joining in
with Sunday morning coffee &
cars events in shopping centre car
parks as this promotes the Jaguar
marque amongst
other
demographics of
car enthusiasts.
The month of April begins with the
popular McLaren Vale Vintage &
Classic event with many members
participating.
I encourage all members to be
involved in our club and join in
with our register groups whenever
possible. Please refer to the
Calendar of Events on our club
website for event details.
Enjoy safe Jaguar & Daimler
motoring.

THE BOTTOM LINE
The Official Monthly Magazine of the Jaguar Drivers Club of South Australia
Club Torque Editor’s Column I’m exhausted! Was your March as
incredibly busy as mine was?
Judging by the amount of content in
this month’s issue, it may very well
have been!
In case you haven’t yet noticed, this
month’s issue of Classic Marque is
a very special SUPERSIZED
edition. There were just so many
events on in March, we couldn’t
possibly squeeze them all into one
regular sized issue! So instead,
we’ve published this 30 page
bumper edition, packed with photos
and stories from you, our members,
detailing the fun and adventures
you’ve had this past month. We’ve
got more centrefold specials than...
well, other, less reputable
magazines. Some would argue the
subject matter of our photos are
more interesting, too.
Of course, there was our cover story
- the huge celebration of Jaguar’s
60th Anniversary Le Mans win at
the Clipsal 500. You’ll find SIX
pages dedicated to photos from
the Clipsal this year, including our
display tent, corporate box, and
driver’s parade. Find this from
pages 12-17.
There’s also a feature on the “Cats
on the Prowl” Adelaide Hills
cruise by Tom Brindle, with some
spectacular shots of their
adventure from look-out to look-
out.
The XK and Mk 7, 8, & 9
Register also had a lovely lunch
run to the Royal Yacht Squadron -
Robin Ide reports the weather was
pleasant, the food delicious, and
the company delightful. Check out
the great photos and story on
pages 20-21.
Have you heard about “Big Red’s”
big victory at the Moonta Show ‘n’
Shine? Daphne Charman reports on
that (and delicious Italian food) on
pages 18-19.
Of course, we can’t forget All
British Day! Alan Bartram declares
the event a great success on pages
22-23.
I’d like to give a special thanks to
all of those who contributed
content, photos, and stories to this
month’s edition. I had a great time
trawling through hundreds of
excellent photos, trying to pick the
best to publish here. I really hope
you all enjoy this special supersized
issue. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m
off to have a lie down.

An Important Message from the Treasurer
Membership Fee Increase
I had previously forecast that we will need to review our membership fees for the ensuing years and indicated
at the AGM that at least a $5 increase (minimum) will be necessary.
Your Executive has discussed this along with forward projections and have agreed to this increase for
membership fees for the 2017/2018 Financial Year.
The primary reasons for the need to increase are as follows:
1. The increase is consistent with our projections when the fees were decreased in 2007,
2. Whilst new members are growing we are experiencing around 20 - 30 members NOT renewing.
This has been the case for some years now. The forecast fee paying members will go from 402
now to an est. 380. (This is based on an estimated 5 new members, 30 non-renewals and an
increase in Life Members by 4),
3. Budgeting for the right number of members is complicated in that around 30 members this year
paid the membership fees that covered them for 15 months. i.e. from March 2016 to June 2017. ,
4. Advertising dollars have reduced significantly. Sports Car Centre & VIP are the only advertisers,
5. Sponsorship is consistent at $2,000 from Solitaire and $1,000 from Shannon’s,
6. Regalia is only a small income earner for the club,
7. The benefits being provided to members through Jag Day, Annual Dinner & Xmas Meeting have
grown by $2,500 in a year without an increase in revenue,
8. All other costs are relatively stable other than CPI (and other) increases,
9. The benefit per member is forecast to go from $52 (now) to $62,
10. The percentage of benefits to membership fees will alter from 88% (now) to 103%,
11. Total funds will move from $52,000 (now) to $16,000 in 2022 if no fee increase is approved.
The Executive will be paying close attention to the costs associated with Jag Day, Annual Dinner &
Christmas Meeting that must be carefully debated each year as part of the budget process.
More attention will be given to raising advertising dollars or additional sponsorship to offset the need to
increase fees in the ensuing years. We will be seeking an extra volunteer from members who would be
willing to assist us coordinate this.
The Motion for the General Meeting on Tuesday 4th April 2017 is “That Full Member fees be increased by
$5 to $65 p.a. for the financial year 1st July 2017 to 30th June 2018”. The joining fee of $35 will remain at
the current level.
More detailed financial modeling will be available at the meeting should anyone wish to talk to me about the
increase.

Tim White

NEW XK140 BOOK - FOCUSED
ON XK140s IN THE SOUTHERN
HEMISPHERE
ADVERTISEMENT
A new book being compiled by Terry McGrath is set to add to the expanding compilation of XK literature.
The book sets out the histories, so far as we have been able to
ascertain them, of every XK120 Jaguar to have been in the
Southern Hemisphere – and, because we are geographically
challenged, a few other places as well.
It is 488 pages long, in a large page format (about 25cm x
34cm or 10″ x 13″), contains entries for about 925 separate
cars, about 280,000 words, and about 1090 photographs – only
some 25 of which appeared in our previous book. It has been
printed in full colour. Of course many of the older photographs
were originally taken in black and white and remain so, but full
colour here means that any photograph that was in colour
originally is reproduced in colour, wherever it is in the book –
not just a 16 page section in the middle. This was a very costly
decision, but one that represented the ‘no compromise’ nature
of the project.
The book includes the known histories of no fewer than 55
alloy XK120s. In addition, many XK120s covered are either
now or have spent time in parts of the world other than those
specifically covered, such as:
USA – 203 cars
UK – 143 cars
Europe – 51 cars
The new book is a follow-up to our book The Jaguar XK in
Australia which was published in 1985. However, as we
expanded the boundaries outside Australia, there was too much
information to put into one volume for all XKs and therefore
we have had to create separate books for each model. The last
two books (XK140s and XK150s) will follow in coming years,
with the XK140 volume to include racing histories as well.
We have never stopped collecting XK histories but serious
work on the current book did not start until 1996. So it has
been a long haul over 14 years, not to mention all the earlier
work. Many thousands of man hours have been spent. This
time could have been spent restoring several XKs…
We acknowledge the expert help of Kylie Prats of
ePrintDesign in Sydney in putting the design and layout of the
project together.
Limited edition – 1,000 copies
The book was announced as an edition limited to 1,000
numbered copies (plus a few copies for libraries etc). However,
the initial print run has in fact been 750 – of which more than
1/3 were the subject of pre-publication written ‘expressions of
interest’.
For more information on the forthcoming book, or to
contribute, contact Terry McGrath at [email protected]

This is the story of a father, son and the mates, and their Jaguar
E-Type. It is an extraordinary saga which began in 2005 with a
journey by Allen Shephard and his mate Boyd Kolozs across
the Australian continent to Australia’s own “Great White
Dyno” - Lake Gairdner in the outback of South Australia.
Allen and his son Phil became intoxicated by salt lake racing
and the prospect of recording a speed higher than anyone else
had achieved with an E-Type. For the next decade the quest
became an obsession and they dragged many motoring friends
across the Nullarbor Plain to join them in their record attempts.
Allen Shephard knew how to make Jaguars go fast but the
speeds were way above normal circuit racing and they had
many failures before they could reach record-breaking speeds.
The ever-enthusiastic Phil Shephard raced the car and made a
diary of their annual trips to Speed Week.
His diaries form the basis of “The World’s Fastest E-Type
Jaguar. The Quest for the Record”. It is no ordinary car book.
Phil was inspired by the story of the New Zealander Burt
Munro, made famous by the movie “The World’s Fastest
Indian.”
He begins with the story of the E-Type which was raced in
Western Australia with success before it went through a
succession of owners and was bought by Allen Shephard. Allen
continued to race the car in Australia and overseas, even
participating in one Panama-Alaska Rally.
At first, Team Shep as they soon became known was looked at
with bemusement by the members of Dry Lake Racers
Australia at Lake Gairdner. Salt lake racing is an American
tradition coming from legendary places such as the salt flats at
Lake Bonneville. Hot rods and lakesters with powerful
American V8 engines ruled. What were these guys doing on
the salt with an English sports car more suited to the highways
of Europe? They were soon won over by the down-to-earth
members of Team Shep.
The book is more than a story of speed setting in a Jaguar. It is
also a story of a group of motoring enthusiasts who shared an
adventure in the Australian outback, challenging the stories of
how fast an E-Type could go and finding their own way to
achieve record speeds.
Phil’s daily diary is complemented by stunning photography —
a light blue E-Type on an arctic white salt lake and an endless
blue sky. The book also explains how the speeds were achieved
for the reader with a more technical interest and it closes with
an evaluation of speeds claimed by E-Types.
“The World’s Fastest E-Type Jaguar. The Quest for the
Record” by Phil Shephard is 184 pages, coffee-table format,
full colour throughout. Cost is $99, available from
www.motoringpast.com.au

CATS ON THE PROWL - Adelaide Hills Cruise 11th March 2017
It was a run with an element of intrigue surrounding it! Where was the other summit we were going to, why were we requested to bring our credit card and where was that “Classy pub dinner” going to be? These were some of the questions that members were contemplating whilst congregating at Light’s Vision Montefiore Hill, Pennington Terrace. Speculation was rife!
It was one of these lovely balmy evenings and an
excellent turn out of cars of different Jaguar models all
lined up along Pennington Terrace as can be seen in the
photo. From the Hill we could see parts of the Adelaide
oval structure behind the tops of the trees and the top
of the tower stage structure for the imminent Adele
Concert!
For some of us, it was the first Twilight Club Cruise and there was an air of
excitement evident amongst the group. Peter and Trish handed out the run
sheet details, which included a number of interesting and clever questions
to answer.
With Run Sheet in hand we headed off to the hills along Greenhill Road. Mainly the passengers had an opportunity to see the great views, with the twinkling of the lights just starting to monopolise the dusky plains below. The drivers were largely enjoying the great twisty roads and the experience of just how good the Jaguar car safely handles in these conditions.
We arrived at the other summit – Mount Lofty! (nothing to do with Lofty England of course!)
Here we found out why we needed our credit cards!! No cash can be used to pay for car parking! The ticket machine was doing a roaring trade and we all patiently went through the rigmarole of getting a ticket!
There is nothing like a sea of smiling faces to let you know something is happening!
At the viewing point Peter and Trish were happily handing out various ice creams and drinks. They were quickly scoffed down by members whilst having a convivial chat amongst the group and enjoying the fantastic views below. What a lovely surprise after our “adventurous” drive up the hills.
We still did not know where we were going to dinner, except for a few smart ones who had worked it out from already answering the last question on the Run Sheet. We headed back down the hill and headed for Belair and stopped at the Windy Point Lookout, with just enough room for us all to park our Jags. By now the evening was starting to set in, and still the views were very special! We were all getting a bit hungry now and we were all yearning for the “Classy Pub Dinner”.
We headed down the hill and reached our final destination and no one went hungry!
The Torrens Arms Hotel at Mitcham made a pleasant and lovely ending to a great Twilight Run!
Thanks from us all Peter and Trish for a great run. Tom Brindle

The Official Monthly Magazine of the Jaguar Drivers Club of South Australia
MOONTA Show ‘n’ shine We had a small representation of the JDCSA enter the Moonta Show’n’Shine on Sunday 12th March, 2017. We had heard that the weather was going to be a bit rough, but there were only a few sprinkles of rain before a very short downpour, then the sun came out again and it was a really good day. There were 100 vehicles at the show, mostly Holden and Ford vehicles with a smattering of other makes and a couple of historic Jaguars belonging to other people. We had 4 Jaguars lined up between the goal posts on the oval, which was in really good condition, and they looked quite splendid with the club banner across windscreens. Food and drinks were available for sale at the footy club on the side of the oval and there was a classic “tram” to take people into the main street of Moonta for the fair. Very similar to the fair at Echunga with various stalls for the sale of jewellery, home wares, soaps, sweets, tools, books, plants and recycled clothing. The organisers were very welcoming and there were no problems getting settled on the oval. Judging took place early in the morning and there were a lot of categories. Bob and I entered “Big Red” in the “Best Classic Car”, “Best Car Club Vehicle” and “Best Car Club”. Not expecting to win any of them, but lo and behold! we collected the Best Car Club Vehicle trophy on the day. It was a wonderful result for our Club on our first time at this event. We left the oval triumphantly after 3pm and made our way back to our rented accommodation where we entertained a few more Jaguar members and friends at an informal BBQ. The people who participated in the event and the barbie were, Bob and Daphne Charman, Geoff and Margaret Thomas, Adela O’Reilly, Graeme and Betty Moore, Charlie and Mary Saliba and their friend, Michael. Only a small gathering this year, but we hope to generate some more interest next year as it is a nice drive and good fun. It will be held on the Adelaide Cup Day weekend, so if people want to stay overnight or for the weekend, bookings for accommodation will have to be made quickly as we were lucky that one of Daphne’s former Police workmates has a holiday home there and kindly offered it to us for a good nightly rate for 2 nights. Had it not been for that, we would have had to go up just for the day. Another great time was had at the Italian restaurant in George St, Moonta on Saturday night. It was called “Da Gianni” and although prices were not cheap, it produced absolutely fantastic food which was presented beautifully and smelled divine!! Have a look at the photos we took. The best money we have ever spent on food that even Daphne did not whine about! We would recommend this restaurant for dining out in a heartbeat. We will be attending this event next year and the house we rented can accommodate about 12 people in some form of bedding arrangements, the yard is huge and can accommodate some caravans as well. We are going to lock in the booking with the ”coppers” as soon as Daphne gets over her viral thingo that she was battling the whole weekend! Cheerio for now Daphne Charman XJ, MK10 & 420G Register

For something different, the Register had a mid-week run on Wednesday 8 March. There was a good attendance of 22 people, most of whom met at the Barratt Reserve, prior to a leisurely run along the foreshore about 20km to the Royal SA Yacht Squadron at the Outer Harbor. When we arrived at the Yacht Squadron we were met by register members Sally and Jacques who have a boat moored there and they welcomed us on board for drinks and snacks. Eventually we were prised away from the boat and moved to the wonderful first floor dining room where we were served lunch, complete with views over the boats and our cars, which were parked on the lawn next to the clubrooms. Thanks Sally and Jacques for your generous hospitality. It was a lovely day.

Valentine’s Day on 14 February 2017 saw All British Day with us again. A gloomy start with spots on the windscreen during the journey up the freeway to Echunga. Not long lasting though and within minutes of arriving we had our marshals and helpers decked out in high-vis vests and on sight erecting the marquees and making ready for the arrival our 55 + Jaguar Drivers Club of SA vehicles to be displayed on the day.
And come they did. The largest contingent of any marque among the 700 + vehicles arranged around the two big ovals. The assembling of our group went particularly smoothly and the JDCSA display was spectacular indeed. That organised it was time for all to enjoy the proceedings and take a stroll to observe our display and all the other points of interest around the grounds.
By 3 pm we were back on the job dismantling our structures and farewelling all our vehicles.
It had been a great day and I would like to personally thank our marshals and helpers who
combined to make our display such a great success.

Who remembers this little fella? Sent to me courtesy of Dave Burton - Dave’s been talking to The Wild Beast (yes, he’s still around), and tells me he might be making an appearance in future issues! Keep your eyes peeled!
Talk about famous online! Gary Scalamera and Roger Adamson (below) impressed the Shell V-Power Racing Team in the Clipsal 500 driver’s parade so much, they shared this photo of them on the team’s official Facebook page! How’s that for exposure? Great job guys!
