Oakfield Academy is delighted to announce that it has received The Secondary Geography Quality Mark: in recognition of excellence in teaching and learning in Geography. The SGQM is a prestigious award which recognises quality and progress in geography leadership, curriculum development and learning and teaching in schools. All the award winners undergo a rigorous moderation process, and the team of assessors were hugely impressed by the manner in which the team at Oakfield Academy continues to embrace new and innovative approaches to help the pupils in their learning. “There has really never been a more important time for young people to learn about the global community” stated Assistant Head Teacher, David McGrath, “Growing up in the 21 Century means living in an increasingly interconnected world, one facing a growing number of global challenges such as climate change and the need to live our lives sustainably. The way geography is taught at the Academy allows pupils the opportunity to really learn at a high level, it fascinates and inspires them to become global citizens”. Year 8 pupil, Sophie Thomas, commented “The learning is relevant to what we as young people experience and that really helps us learn. We are also able to apply the skills in other lessons like Maths and English, which helps us with our confidence”.

Thank you to all parents for their support of our Accelerated Reading programme. The most recent data has shown extra-ordinary closing of gaps between nearly all the monitored groups. Every time pupils take an AR quiz they should record their results on the ‘AR Results’ pages and show it to their tutor. We ask that students read for a minimum of 3x a week and aim for at least 45 minutes total over the week. We will be rewarding this reading with ‘Smileys’ - extra for those who read 5x a week! Please can parents sign this page each week, there is a small space in the margins for initials. Miss Hall, Head of English.

Clarifying the rules on mobile phones Mobile phones are not allowed to be used in school for safeguarding reasons and we accept no responsibility for lost/stolen items brought into school. If any child is using a personal mobile/ IT device, it will be confiscated and parents asked to come into school to collect it. KS2 pupils are asked to hand in their phones / IT devices to reception. KS3 pupils are advised to hand in devices, if however they decide to keep them, then they must keep them out of switched off and out of sight whilst in school. Thank you for your support.
