KS2 GYMNASTICS SUCCESS

Before Easter, Oakfield Academy entered two KS2 teams and five Individual entries into the

Mendip School Games Gymnastics Competition. The girls all competed at a very high level and presented their routines to an

excellent standard. Two of our Individual entrants qualified for the Somerset School

Games finals at Millfield. Tilly Kempshall came First with a gold medal and Kiera Burgess came 4th; both in the Mendip

Individuals category. On 15th April, Kiera and Tilly competed in the

County Gymnastics Finals in the Somerset School Games. Both girls achieved a great deal to compete against the best Gymnasts

from across the Somerset Schools. Their gymnastics coach said the girls' Vaults were

very high and well turned out. They supported each other well and had a great

day. Well done to both girls for their efforts and hard work. A special mention goes to Tilly Kempshall, who won a Gold medal and

trophy; coming first in the Individuals Category for Somerset. Fantastic work Tilly.

ARE HOSTING A ’FROME’S GOT TALENT’

COMPETITION ON SUNDAY 24TH APRIL AT 2.30PM

AT THE MEMORIAL HALL.

If you would like to audition, please contact

Norman Elner on 01373 466495

A story written by Beth Dent (5N) is now

on display for everybody to read in the

Enrichment Centre. Beth who is ten,

explained that the story was inspired by

her friend Maisie who has three guinea

pigs, and her own parents.

“I wrote the story on The Isle of Wight in

a café. I entered it into a competition,

and my story was chosen to be printed in

a book called ‘Fairyland Fairytales’

which is a collection of stories written by

children. This is a particular

accomplishment for me as I am dyslexic.

I was so inspired by winning the last

competition, I have recently entered

another one”.

Pupils have worked hard in their lessons to create a field trip study that is relevant and helpful to the local community. Study Questions range from:

'Is the land used effectively in Frome town centre?' and 'Does the amount of litter and graffiti impact the amount of tourism in Frome?' Jack in Year 8 commented “It's really nice to get out and apply what we have learnt in our lessons, especially as it has a direct impact on us in the local area”. Pupils will study their results over the next few weeks and the

geography department will display their findings.

Head of Humanities

Congratulations to our fifteen Oakfield Language Leaders for their hard work and commitment within

the Modern Languages department, since January 2016. On a weekly basis, they give up their lunchtimes

and after-school free time to help others with their language learning which, in itself, is admirable! When

asked what motivated them to become a Language Leader, some Years 8 students responded:

“I want to take Spanish as a GCSE and I think it would really develop my skills and give me an

advantage at Frome College”.

“I like having responsibilities and working with younger children and being part of a team. I think I’d

be good at this”.

“I would like to help people improve their language skills as well as improving my own and boosting

my confidence as I am shy”.

“I like working with younger students. It will be good practice because I would like to be a teacher

when I am older”.

So far, Jasmin Knight (8A), Sabrina Roberts (8A), Maisie Smith (8A), Irish Shulman (8O),

Stephanie Verwey (8O), Eve Lindley (8O), Kiana Rees (8O), Millie Bates (8R), Maddy Patterson (8R),

Saffron Allison (8R), Niah Earl (8R), Molly Lindley (8N), Isabel Hanney (8N), Amaia Sulinski (8S),

and Thomas Leigh (8S) have:

Run a lunchtime club to help our Year 7 students practice their Spelling Bee words;

Supported Mrs Royle and Mrs Hall in some of their Year 5 and 6 French and Spanish lessons;

Attended an after-school club to plan cultural quizzes for KS2 pupils as well as a Languages Day

for one of our first schools.

The aim of the Spelling Bee is for our high achieving students in Year 7 to practise and improve even

further their vocabulary, spelling and memory skills in French.

Students were given 50 words to learn at the first stage of the competition.

A further 50 words were added at stages 2 and 3 of the competition. The vocabulary is relevant to the

curriculum.

Time was spent learning and practising the alphabet in the foreign language (paying attention to accents,

punctuation etc.).

Students were given the word in English, they translated it into French/Spanish and then spelt it out correctly

using the French/Spanish alphabet.

When participating in the Regional Finals, students were given one minute to correctly spell as many words

as possible (in random order).

both French and Spanish

Based on the number of French or Spanish words they could spell in one minute, Onni, Millie-Mollie and

Areti represented Oakfield Academy in the Regional finals on Monday 18th April at Norton Hill School.

Although, they didn’t reach the Finals in Cambridge (by a small margin) we were all extremely proud of

their performance on the day as well as their huge effort and commitment throughout the whole process.

REMINDER

Friday 27th May is our next

and final INSET day for the

2015/16 academic year.

Mrs Perrett our Academy Librarian welcomes our new trainee ‘educational dog’ Willow, with her owner Jayne Boundy. Jayne, who works for the Dogs Trust was visiting Year 6 with a very excited Willow, to give her experience of visiting large

groups of children.

Oakfield Academy would like to thank Mrs Alison Peyton and the wonderful Linus, who sadly are no longer able to come and listen to our children read. They visited Oakfield lot of times and will be

missed by our young readers.

Space seeds have arrived at Oakfield Academy. They

arrived on Earth on the 2nd March in Kazakhstan. The

seeds then travelled to NASA. They were then packed and

sent to Rocket Science enthusiasts around the world who

had applied for a place. Mr Ward a Year Five tutor at

Oakfield Academy applied for a place with the experiment

and was very lucky to be chosen.

Pictured below, Mr Ward with girls from his class 5N

spending an afternoon sowing precious space seeds. The

seeds will be carefully stored in his classroom, along with

the measurement chart supplied with them, so that the

pupils can carefully monitor the seed’s progress. The

experiments will be collated by The RHS Campaign for

School Gardening Team—we will keep you posted of the

success Mr Ward and 5N achieve.

Can we politely request that if you give your child any medication prior to school, that you record the dosage in your child’s journal. If a child arrives in our First Aid room requiring a pain relief tablet, and we have permission from parents to give them a tablet, they will be given an appropriate tablet, school will not be phoning home to check this.

Thank you for your co-operation.

SENIOR LEADERSHIP TEAM

Our year 6 team having won their first qualifying

tournament, went on to represent Oakfield

Academy in the Somerset County finals held at

Tor Rugby Club, Glastonbury. The team started

slowly however and lost their initial 3 matches

narrowly. A few necessary improvements were

evident, however during the first 3 games and

once settled, they went on to win the remaining 3

matches in style, scoring some great try's and

improving greatly in defence. The team,

comprising Billy, Evan, Rufus, Raphael, Ethan,

Millie, Isobel, Alex, Mckenzie, Eric and Evelyn can

consider themselves the 10th best team in

Somerset from around about 220 primary schools.

We look forward to competing in the Frome Tag

tournament set to be held later in the summer

term. A big thank you must got to Mr Vargas for

coaching the team. Mr Fowler
