Q uite often when I catch up with someone who has had their photo in the paper recently they tell me

– they couldn’t believe how many people told them that they had seen their photo in GCNews.

So I am not sure why I was surprised last week when my sneaky staff put a birthday announcement into the paper without me knowing – how many birthday wishes I received last week.In-person, over the phone, and on email – I have to say that I was just thankful that they had used a photo from my Face book page that I quite liked... they might not have been so popular if they had used one of me dancing during my Karaoke performance at an old Christmas Party!

I think as long as you don’t have to focus on what age you are celebrating – that birthdays are great and they make for a great reason to be social – catch up with your friends and generally be made a fuss over. Time to celebrate Australia Day – and there is plenty happening across Glasshouse Country as well as on the coast, to check out the complete list of events, check out Things 2 Do on page 21.

Information evening for new Mooloolah Lions Club, community members are invited along to the Mooloolah Community Centre, 7.00pm – for 7.30pm with a light supper served during the evening. In the countdown to Australia Day one local family, the Hardy’s of Mooloolah, are really excited to be taking part in the Citizenship Ceremony held by Council at the Maroochy RSL.After officially making Australia their home more than four years ago – the time is right for Clint, Ria and their 14-year-old son Jake to make it official and become Aussies.Ria said it had been a dream of Clint’s to come to Australia and 10 years ago they come on holiday to visit Clint’s mum who had previously made the move. It was then they decided that they definitely wanted to make the move and began the application process.They were disappointed as their application was knocked back, and Ria made the decision to complete her university studies in Early Childhood and then to reapply.The second time application was then accepted and so began their move to Australia. They originally relocated to Little Mountain but they felt a little isolated and missed the village atmosphere of where they had been living in England.Last August they moved to Mooloolah and they just love the lifestyle – the strong community feel, where the neighbours are friendly and look out for one another.

In England they lived in a terrace house so one thing that Clint really loved about their new home was his three bay shed. Which Ria reckons Clint had all in order long before the house was unpacked.Clearly when talking to the family, they love Australia, and believe they have made the absolute right decision in moving here. While Ria did say that being so far away from her family – particularly at Christmas can be hard.However with the communication technology available now – it helps bridge that gap and Ria has already organised for her brother to have the link that Council have set up so that they can see the Citizenship Ceremony live on the day.

Caution about water use in dry weatherAs the hot weather continues, and Ewen Maddock Dam slowly recedes into a puddle, Unitywater is encouraging customers to be mindful of their water use.Recent water consumption figures released by Seqwater show Sunshine Coast residents are using more water per person than any other area in SE Queensland. On average we are using 240 litres per person per day – an additional 21 litres per person compared to the same period last year.Previous weeks of extreme heat has seen many people using garden sprinklers more frequently. Domestic garden sprinklers use around 1,000 litres of water per hour. Running sprinklers regularly could easily exceed normal consumption habits and this will be reflected in bills that will be issued in the coming weeks.Residents should also be vigilant of water leaks which increase during dryer weather, by checking their meter regularly.

Clay soils expand and contract in line with the amount of rainfall received. While modern water pipes are designed to withstand changes in soil conditions, older galvanised pipes may be susceptible to leakage due to breaks.This was brought home to us at GCNews last week, when a leak was found at the water meter by the Unitywater meter reader. Incredibly, the leak was not noticeable, as the water was soaking straight into the dry soil, without any visible signs of a problem.More information on water saving tips and how to check your water meter can be found on Unitywater’s website www.unitywater.com.If you’re wondering how Ewen Maddock Dam is faring – it’s now down to 57.2 per cent and Baroon Pocket is at 74.2 per cent and dropping fast. Both dams are still being accessed to supply water to Sunshine Coast communities.


Brides through timeBy Lea ParkesGwen and Doug Kippen of Beerwah recently celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary and combined the special occasion with a fundraising event for the Beerwah Lions Club.‘Kippen Brides through the Years’ was an afternoon held in their home which showcased a combination of frocks worn by Doug’s Mother – Lorna Slater, Gwen and their daughter Bronwen’s, at their weddings.

The dresses represented different fashion trends over the past 70 years, with Lorna’s dress worn in 1942, Gwen’s from 1973 and Bronwen’s from 2006.While Gwen wore her own dress as part of the parade, Clare Hunter modeled Lorna’s, and Janine Woodland wore Bronwen’s dress.As well as the wedding dresses, the bridesmaid, and flower girl dresses from Gwen’s wedding were included in the fashion parade and Gwen’s Mother of the Bride outfit she wore when Bronwen married Wayne Lomas. Gwen said it was a very special day.“It was amazing to see all the outfits that meant so much to our family come back to life and be appreciated once again,” she said.Another highlight of the day was when Gwen and Doug’s granddaughter Ainslee Hunter set the mood for the parade by playing Elvis’s ‘Love Me Tender’ on the guitar during the parade.Doug presented Lorna with a gorgeous ruby ring on the day to mark the 40 year ruby anniversary

Telstra tower on track for Glass HouseLast week, a concerned GCNews reader contacted our office saying they had heard a rumour that the project to construct a Telstra mobile phone tower at Jeffreys Road Glass House Mountains had been cancelled or postponed.Back in May, GCNews reported on the tower project after earlier complaints from readers about the poor mobile phone reception in the area.Subsequently, Telstra announced two mobile phone tower projects – one to upgrade the existing tower on the reservoir hill at Beerwah, and the other to construct a new tower at Jeffreys Road, Glass House Mountains.Telstra reported that the problems with mobile reception were caused by the existing Wild Horse Mountain tower being over its capacity, and the upgraded and new tower projects would bring significant improvements for local mobile phone users.At the time, Telstra said that the construction of the Jeffreys Road tower was planned to

commence in the first quarter of 2013.In response to the latest rumour, GCNews contacted Aurecon, who is providing planning and design services to Telstra, for a comment and a spokesperson has confirmed that Telstra has placed an order for the new pole and construction is likely to start towards the latter part of the first quarter of 2013, or soon thereafter.

Kindy Graduation2012 at Beerwah Magic Trees Early Learning Centre ended with 24 happy, confident children graduating from our first official Kindergarten Program. This was a very special occasion with many of our graduating class having attended Beerwah Magic Trees since they were in the nursery! Parents, grandparents, family and friends were all invited to a celebration for our Class of 2012. Dressed to impress and wearing their graduation

caps, the children were so proud to put on a special performance for our guests before receiving their Graduation Certificates and gifts. Afterwards everyone enjoyed some of the HUGE delicious cake which was generously donated by Woolworths Beerwah especially for our ‘Class of 2012’. We would like to take this opportunity to wish our children all the best for their exciting journey into ‘big school’, we will miss you all!

Muso’s club adds another venueContributed by Michael WhitickerOn Sunday afternoon the Musos Club had its first appearance at Coffee and Tea Merchants next door to the old Setter’s Market.

We welcomed Sherry Anderson for a set which included her heartfelt original material. One song in particular – ‘The Wishboat Song’, I particularly enjoyed. Her strong, clear voice was so well received a second set was requested!

Other performers on the day included regulars Mick Dawson, Frank Moroney and Paul Fagan -

all in good form, and myself.Amongst some other light hearted material I dusted off the Randy Newman classic from 1972 – ‘Political Science’, to welcome in the New Year.Thank you to everyone - especially the listeners, who joined us for this new venue. The refreshments here are highly recommended (my partner and I heartily enjoyed ice coffees and mango smoothies), as is the attitude of proprietor Steve, keen to see it take off as a music café, he eventually hopes to have entertainment at Coffee and Tea Merchants every Sunday afternoon.So why not pop in and check it out? The next time we will be there is January 27 - the Sunday of the Australia Day long weekend.

Muso’s ClubContributed by Michael WhitickerI am happy to report in these worrying times with concerns over heat and bushfires and the difficulty in retaining and gaining employment, that the Musos Club is there for anyone to get up and let their hair down!We have just had the first two ‘Musos’ of the year, and although a political or humanistic theme wasn’t necessarily on the agenda, sometimes it is just good to get up and share songs. On Thursday, January 10 we met at the Sport Club and enjoyed a performance from a new group from the Hinterland - Kaffee Katz. One of their members Adrien Powell has become a regular on the drum kit for us, but in this case he played guitar with three other members of the group all joining in with guitar, bass and vocals. Their set included songs from Paul Kelly and Kasey Chambers and it was great to hear the

Picnickers in the area please take care - the plants are not marked and are easily trampled. Some are immediately adjacent to the rock holes. Thanks to the dedicated few who have assisted with watering and planting at short notice!Lantana and other weeds have been removed around the rock holes, but there is still some to go.Council is to spray the Ochna bushes along the creek in the forest. Energex has just completed

their yearly cleanup under the power lines, which unfortunately pass through this special area, so some small bushes and trees have been cut down to ground level.We are in contact and it is hoped they will be a little more lenient next time. Sadly picnickers continue to leave rubbish at the rock holes - please take it with you (note, there is a $200.00 fine!)Two of us have been trained for water monitoring at three sites for Mooloolah Waterwatch and Landcare and will test for water quality, including 'Aitkin Creek' from the chicken farm and council's street drainage treatment ponds in Emma Park, which flow into the rock holes.

The highlight for most of us this evening was Glenn Stephen’s set. He is a genuine wizz on the piano with an impressive voice and a vocal range that threatens the stratospheres. Mooloolah Mob encourages other to ‘just walk’The walking group from Mooloolah began walking seven years ago and are part of the Health Foundation initiative to encourage people to become active.Two of the group members recently attended a morning tea held by the Heart Foundation and Sunshine Coast Council which was attended by about 20 people, all of them walkers from different groups around the Sunshine Coast.One of the Mooloolah Mob walkers, Helen Weil, said they met walkers from a diverse range of places such as Buderim, Kenilworth, Caloundra, Maleny, etc and were able to share their experiences.“It was quite an informal gathering and very interesting to learn how other groups operated,” she said.“One of the main benefits (besides fitness) was clearly the friendships formed by joining a walking group with some of the groups regularly holding social events.“Each group represented had two members present and each group was awarded a Champion Walker certificate.“It was a very worthwhile morning and so good to know that others are doing much the same as what we do – just walking,” she said.

The Mooloolah group walk every Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings at 6.30am, meeting at Martin Rungert Park and decide where to walk on the day. School NewsLandsborough students to be impressedAnyone who may have driven past Landsborough State School during the holidays will have noticed some exciting transformations. Modern new signage and a facelift to many of the buildings has taken place over the summer break. Belinda Hutchinson and her husband, two sons Declan aged eight and Ethan aged five, from Landsborough, recently spent 77 days travelling 16,623 kilometres around Australia with their caravan. And while they may not quite be the ‘grey nomad’ demographic, they absolutely enjoyed the journey.Where did you travel to?We travelled through five states with most of our time spent travelling through the Northern Territory and Western Australia.What would you say were the highlights of your trip?After driving around Australia we somehow feel more ‘Australian’ now. We have learnt more about our history, seen our geography, visited amazing places that we had read about, met interesting people at caravan parks and churches and experienced so much more.We have also learnt more about each other and ourselves. It has bonded us closer together as a family. And of course, it was unbelievably fun!What was your favourite part of the trip?That is really difficult to answer, as we have been to so many beautiful places and done so many amazing things. There is a long list of things we have seen that are the biggest/longest/oldest/only/etc. in Australia or the world. We did our best to compile a top 10 list, but had to cheat a little by combining some items:1. Helicopter flights in the Bungle Bungles and Katherine Gorge.2. Seeing fish, coral and other sea creatures whilst snorkelling off the beach at Coral Bay and Ningaloo (near Exmouth).3. Cruising across Lake Argyle and down the East Alligator River at Kakadu.4. Stunning views from the lookouts over the Nullarbor Cliffs and in the Kalbarri National Park.5. Seeing the huge mines in Mt Isa and Kalgoorlie.6. Bushwalking in Cania Gorge and Litchfield.7. Swimming in rock pools and under waterfalls at Litchfield National Park.8. The drive between destinations. We enjoyed seeing the beautiful birds, animals, wildflowers, and historic buildings.9. Dinner at the Pier in Darwin. There had to be a food-related one in the list somewhere.

10. A split decision. The boys: Learning about Australia’s dinosaurs at Winton, and touching a real dinosaur bone. Me: Looking at expensive jewellery and other bling in Queensland gem fields, Broome and Perth.How were you accepted by the ‘grey nomads?’Even though our demographics were a little different, we were warmly welcomed into the ‘grey nomad’ community wherever we travelled. It is great to see that there is such strong camaraderie between caravanners around the country. A lot of vanners like to print their names on their vans, and sometimes a slogan, like: adventure before dementia, dunna runna, every day is a Saturday, living the dream, spending/drinking the kid’s inheritance, fossils on the run etc. I was thinking what ours would be, maybe something philosophical like ‘no regrets’. I asked the kids and Declan came up with the suggestion, “the sooner we retire the better so we can do this again.” As he is only eight-years-old, he has a while to go yet!Do you have any advice for others considering caravanning around the country?We loved the caravanning life and absolutely recommend it to anyone considering giving it a go. We are blessed to live in such a beautiful and diverse country. Get out there!

I hope everyone had a safe and relaxing break over the holidays.As we get back into the swing of things for 2013 I’d like to ask you, the Hinterland community, to tell me what changes, issues or ideas you have for the future of Beerwah, Landsborough, Mooloolah Valley and Glenview?The Hinterland certainly experienced some progressive changes in the second half of last year but as we move into the future it is vital that we continue to provide for all of those who live in the area.The new year has already started off with a win for the Beerwah State Primary School.The school was given a cash boost, sharing in more than $124,000 in State Government grants approved for the Caloundra electorate.This money came from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund and it is great that after a long campaign the school can now move forward with the installation of a new playground costing $31,795.00.The revenue for this fund comes from gaming taxes placed on Golden Casket lotteries, wagering, keno and gaming machines.There are more opportunities for other community groups and schools to put in a submission for the program. More information can be found online at www.olgr.qld.gov.au/grants or by contacting my office on 5491 2780.This year I will also be following up on the traffic light funding for the notorious intersection of Railway Street and Harwood Road at Landsborough.Many of you may remember I wrote to the Minister for Transport and Main Roads Scott Emerson in a bid to review the planned works for the area immediately. This resulted in the department confirming the installation of traffic signals at the intersection would begin in 2013. I will continue to monitor this project to make sure we have an outcome before another life is lost and will keep you updated on its progress.

Take a look and seeIn this time of high fire danger I want the council to look at the condition of the nature reserve at Chantilly Park on Chantilly Crescent, Beerwah. Firstly, the mowing contractors are going out wider each time because of the fallen branches and undergrowth of introduced (dumped) plants. The distance between the bush and fence will be less than a metre soon and the ride on mower won’t fit through. Secondly, there are so many dead trees which are falling onto residential fences. Inside the bush are many fallen trees, now dead wood, and what looks like a campfire pit for youths to hang out. One stray cigarette butt would set the lot alight. The houses would have no hope of survival. Thirdly, stage 2 of council plans for the upgrade of the park has never taken place. It included an oval shaped grass area, boundary trees and seating.I am not so much concerned about the development of the park but the maintenance to reduce fire and snake danger from the undergrowth and fallen trees. I would like Councillor Rick Baberowski to go out to have a look at it himself.

War of the worldsTranquil, natural, serene...all these amazing things are something that the Glasshouse Mountains are renowned for. Well, at times, for some in the region, this is very true. Those that are lucky enough not to be living on the main route of 20+tonne trucks hauling boulders, logs and concrete to and from the local quarry and bark business.Up to 40 trucks an hour fly up and down the main road of Glass House starting anywhere from 5.00am and ending at any time of the night. These massive machines are double and triple semis and shake everything in their path, including the houses on route. The impact on the community is palpable with the noise so deafening it is hard to hold a conversation in some homes at times. The impact on the wildlife and environment is yet to be measured with the exhaust pollution when they are convoying as thick as any smog in the city. We have been requesting Council re-route these hundreds of monsters each day to a less built up area and to reduce their numbers, hence reducing the impact of pollution on the natural environment, but they have refused. With many elderly people living with this constant stress, noise and pollution, we wonder what long term effects it is having on them and those just growing up in the area. These trucks can be heard coming and leaving from kilometres away, that is how incredibly loud they are, and screech and bang as they fly around corners and hit the sides of the road.As dawn breaks, many in the area are stretched to hear the birds awakening, instead they are deafened by the pounding, crunching and roaring of terrifying monster trucks starting their road train. Protecting and preserving our local frogsThe Great Barred Frog is a ground dwelling native frog that is found near running water in wet sclerophyll forests and rainforests.The males which range from 70-102mm are slightly bigger than the females at 63-66mm.The Great Barred Frog usually has a dull brown upper body with a pale yellow or white lower body, with dark markings on the throat, thighs and chin. The legs have prominent black lines.There is a dark stripe which runs from the snout along the back of the frog; this is sometimes broken or irregular. These colours and markings make ideal camouflage when the frog finds shelter during the day amongst the leaf litter.The male frog has a mating call which sounds like ‘wark-wark’. The second part to the call sounds like ‘ruckle-ruckle’ and this is believed to deter other males. The males call from amongst the protective leaf litter in the warmer months but breed while in the water.The female lays a small number of eggs in a sticky gel like material. These are then fertilised by the male as the eggs appear. The female uses her powerful hind legs to then flick the fertilised eggs onto the overhanging branches on the creek or river bank.

This process is continued until 1,000-2,000 eggs have been safely deposited away from aquatic predators. When the eggs hatch, the tadpoles will fall or get washed back into the water. The frog’s diet includes insects, arthropods and smaller frogs.The Great Barred frog can be confused with the Giant Barred Frog which is an endangered species, as this frog has similar colours and markings. The Giant Barred Frog is larger and is usually of dark-olive to black colouring.Native frogs are very susceptible to diseases and chemicals. It is vital to have clean wet hands, if it is necessary to touch the frogs. These frogs are important to our district’s aquatic ecology and are another of our Australian amphibians that may be fast disappearing.

Film festival at MalenyOver the Australia Day weekend the Maleny Film Society will be presenting their 19th annual Maleny Festival of Australian Film and, as in past years, the MFS have selected an impressive line-up of top quality recent Australian productions. The Festival will be held on Friday, January 25 and Saturday, January 26 at the Pavilion in the Maleny Showgrounds. Starting with ‘The Sapphires’ on Friday night, then on Saturday ‘Paul Kelly – stories of me’ will be screening at the matinee and ‘Bathing Franky’ on Saturday night. Full details can be found on the MFS website www.malenyfilmsociety.infoDinner will be available from 6.00pm on Friday and Saturday nights and there is a cash bar and tea/coffee stand. Life in the soilWelcome to another great year of gardening! This year I’m planning to pack my column with loads of gardening education, investigations and inspiration! I’ll also continue to keep you updated on how my own patch is going along the way.So getting straight to it … let’s start from the bottom with soil organisms.We often talk about soil organisms, but what are they and why are they beneficial to our garden? I seriously love soil biology.Firstly, a bit of background information. When we talk soil organisms, we can generally put these into two categories; macro and micro-organisms. These are then broken into the categories of animal (fauna) and plant (flora). Macro-organisms consist of those that can be seen with the naked eye, this includes fauna such as worms, ants and beetles, and flora such as roots of higher plants.Micro-organisms as the name suggests are those that you need a microscope to see properly. Examples of micro-flora include bacteria and fungi and microfauna can include nematodes.There are billions to hundreds of billions of soil organisms in a handful of garden soil!It is literally another world beneath your feet and just like the world above ground, the animals and plants below us need the same things to live – food, water and oxygen. So to keep your soil teaming with healthy soil organisms there are a number of things you should consider in your garden.Mulch – this prevents moisture loss, reduces temperature fluctuations and supplies your soil organisms with a food source. Furthermore, the micro-organisms in the soil transform organic material into mineral nutrients that are available for uptake by plants. Amazing little creatures really!Green manure – growing plants intended to be incorporated back into the soil is a great way to increase soil organism populations. Live plants encourage soil organisms to come to them by secreting sugars and then when these are slashed and incorporated into the soil, the plant feeds the boosted population. Legume species are particularly beneficial as they also provide a habitat for rhizobia bacteria which are capable of converting atmospheric nitrogen to soil-bound nitrogen.Moisture – maintaining adequate moisture is essential for healthy soil life, because like you and I, those critters need their water. However, poor drainage or over watering can encourage anaerobic bacteria that can damage plant roots, so moderation is the key.Rotation – soil organisms need a variety of root types to thrive. Diverse soil communities are more able to resist disease organism, decompose matter and generate nutrients.Organic – insecticides and fungicides kill soil organisms, so for optimal soil health it is best to use organic methods of pest control. Furthermore, organic fertilisers are a great stable, long-term food source for soil organisms.I hope you’ve learnt a few things about your garden soil organisms and how to care for them! Ivory Curl FlowerBuckinghamia celsissimaIn flower now all over the Glasshouse Country region is the magnificent Ivory Curl Flower. This small tree explodes with blossom throughout summer and provides a valuable nectar source for many insects and birds. This small tree originates from the rainforest s of North Queensland from Paluma to Cooktown. This is a very hardy, fast growing tree that will grow to approximately 5 - 8m and doesn’t mind being heavily pruned. As a feature tree or in a mixed rainforest planting you can’t go too far past the Ivory Curl Flower when it comes to hardiness and beauty.

Blue Flax LilyDianella caeruleaDo you want a small, tough, hardy local native plant that looks great in formal and informal garden situations? Then the Blue Flax Lily maybe the plant that you are looking for.It is a tough, hardy plant that is easily grown. It tolerates poor drainage and responds well to additional moisture, so be sure to mulch. This plant has fantastic landscaping potential, and is a great addition to rockeries and garden beds. It can be incorporated within water feature planting and as an edge species to fill in gaps of already established areas.The Blue Flax Lily is a strappy clumping plant to one metre high. It has beautiful delicate star-shaped blue flowers blooming in spring and early summer and equally stunning blue fruit.Seed can retain is viability for six – 12 months, although it is best to sow fresh seed during the fruiting time from January through to March. It is noted that smoke treatment will improve germination rates with most Dianella species.Fruit eating birds and butterflies are attracted to the Blue Flax Lily. This fruit is also edible for humans, eaten raw when ripe, although care should always be shown when discovering new bush tucker foods.

It always fascinates me how our pre conceptions shape the way we respond to Jesus.Many of us are happy to accept Jesus as a moral teacher equal to any other religious guru. We pick and choose what we like about his teaching and stitch it together in whatever way we find most reasonable, discarding the bits we don’t agree with.Others see Jesus as a lunatic who roamed the earth 2,000 years ago raving mad and claiming divine status. Coming from such a pre conception the only reasonable response is to distrust Christianity and regard it as complete nonsense.Even many who believe the fact that Jesus was indeed sent from God as a baby tend to leave him in that infant form, forgetting that he didn’t remain a baby forever. At Christmas time we enjoy unpacking the story of baby Jesus in the same way we do

our Christmas trees. This enables us to pack him up again come new years and forget about the whole thing until the following Christmas, removing that awkward obligation to consider his teaching.But what if Jesus really is the Son of God, who came to earth as a baby, grew into a man, died on the Cross for our sins, rose from the grave, and ascended into heaven where he sits even now at the right hand of God the Father awaiting the day he will return to judge mankind? If that be true, how then should we respond to Jesus?

Healing Day A Healing Day will be held at the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre, opposite the Post Office, Ryan Street, Glass House Mountains. The healing days will be held on the first Saturday of each month. The next day will be February 2, followed by March 2, April 6 and then May 4. They will be held from 1.30pm – 4.30pm. We are a group of alternative healers who will do the best to help you feel better. We have had successful experience in helping with depression, migraine, pain and other illnesses. The course is dry and we are getting lots of run, as opposed to last year when we couldn't even play for the wet! Even though the weather was a bit hot, 49 girls came to play a Single Stableford for trophies donated by the club. We played in 2 Divisions with Pam Marsden taking out Division 1 with a total of 36 points. Jen Kelly was runner up with 33 points. Gail Murphy started the year well with a win in Division 2 with a total of 33 points from Liz Flavelle who scored 32 points. NTPs went to Beth Butler on 2, Sonia Kenway on 5, Lea Garner took out 16 and Sue Greentree was closest on the 18th. The ball rundown went to 31 points.We are going to begin playing Contract Bridge at the clubhouse on Thursday afternoons between 3.00pm and 5.00pm. We welcome players of all levels and will be providing lessons and support to new or returning players. So, if you fancy an afternoon of great company with a game of cards thrown in, give Janette in our office a call on 5494 0630. We look forward to seeing you on the course on in the clubhouse.
