Our School Values - Respect – Acknowledging the rights and opinions of others and valuing others for who
they are. Inclusion – Being accepting of others and providing a sense of belonging. Care – Show consideration for
the well-being of yourself, others and the world in which we live. Honesty – Being truthful. Responsibility –
Being reliable and accountable for your attitudes and behaviours.
Hello everyone!
Here we are in familiar territory and working our way through what might be a known
scenario into the future. Or for a while anyway! We hope that you are coping with work,
family and of course schooling. It is at these times we find the inner abilities that we were not
aware we had to make ends meet and do our best.
What a delight it is to jump in and out of small group meetings to see such engagement,
learning and laughter occurring. The ‘sneak attack’ is the best approach when quietly you
appear and slowly the kids realise but are not sure whether to comment. Thank you and
well done to parents and students for your organisation at home to ensure the learning
continues through these experiences.
As with the requirement to keep attendance when onsite,
we do keep attendance while learning remotely. Staff
monitor the student attendance at the small group
meetings. This attendance is communicated to the Regional office when asked as it provides
important information of students that run the risk of disengaging and learning growth is not
evident. Regular contact with our Senior Educational Instructional Leader (SEIL) focuses on
attendance and possible high-risk concerns. In the event your
child has been sick while learning remotely please make sure you
contact the school or the teacher and log the illness on Compass.
We understand that children will look
for that connection with friends, often the hardest part of remote
learning. By embracing small group meetings, it is envisaged that
students will feel a sense of connectedness to peers and teachers.
Of course, not the same as face to face learning, with optimism
this will occur on Wednesday July 28.
In week 4 on Wednesday August 4th and Thursday August 5th we will
hold our Parent Teacher discussions. The meetings will occur as
WebEx meetings. We will be circulating more information on
bookings and requirements early next week.
You may have noticed prior to learning remotely that we have a new cleaner.
We wish to welcome Ashley to our community. Ashley commences cleaning
at 12.30pm and systematically works her way through areas of the school
ensuring the playground, high touch areas, toilets (not the floors), tables and
other identified areas are cleaned. As Ashley works her way around the school
she will try to avoid learning areas while students are present. Ashley is a quiet
personality, however does enjoy when the children say hello to her. ☺
Next week we will handover to the year six leaders to
provide us with a reflection of the highlights of year 6,
along with what they are most looking forward to in their
final 5 months of primary school.

Podcast for Parents
Yesterday, I listened to a wonderful podcast that provides some very
timely support to parents during these challenging times. ‘The
Imperfects’ is a podcast produced by The Resilience Project. Here is
some information about their current episode which is well worth a
listen:
The Academy of Imperfection - Dr Billy Garvey, Paediatrician
Go get your pens and notebooks everyone! In this edition of The Academy of Imperfection, students Hugh, Ryan, Josh sit down with famed paediatrician, Dr Billy Garvey of The Royal Children’s Hospital. Currently, Billy regretfully has a two and a half year waiting list to see him in person, but is keen to reach as many of you as possible NOW. And with all the talk on our podcast about parenting recently, we felt this was a very necessary episode. Billy may not look like one of Australia’s most respected and in-demand paediatricians, as we speak about in the episode, but gee whiz, he sure does talk like it!
If you enjoy podcasts, I highly recommend that you listen to this episode. I am sure many parents would really benefit from listening to this and the very timely support it provides. You can access the episode via one of the following platforms:

This ‘Public Service Announcement’ was shared
with me during the week. It is a great reminder
that we are all in this together and are all doing
the best we can.
Take care everyone – we are really looking

HAVE YOU HEARD THE
What’s been happening in the Hive??
This term we are trialing something different in our Afterschool Care program. To help our senior students further
develop leadership skills, they will be working with our educators to plan and run an activity. After the experience the
students are asked to document their experience.
A message from Mahlia….
Our Choc Chip Cookie Experience
Before we got started on our cooking experience, Roxann had kindly gone out to the shops and bought all our ingredients
needed (thanks Roxann). Then after afternoon tea and the workout Wednesday it was time to get cooking.
Everyone at the Hive participated in our activity, we split into 2 groups. The process was stressful but really fun at the same
time. I also made a bit of a mess in the buzz (oops).
Despite all the mess and the fact that we got a little stressed, the cookies ended up turning out really tasty and I would
certainly make them again.
Chocolate chip cookies
Ingredients
150g butter, softened
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup caster sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 3/4 cups plain flour
1/2 cup milk chocolate bits, plus 1 tablespoon extra
1/2 cup dark chocolate bits, plus 1 tablespoon extra
Steps
1. Preheat oven to 180C or 160C fan-forced. Line
2 baking trays with baking paper. Using an
electric mixer or whisking by hand, beat butter
and sugars, and 1-2 minutes or until smooth
and well combined. Beat in egg and vanilla
until combined.
2. Stir in flour. Stir in dark and milk choc bits.
Roll 2 level tablespoonfuls of mixture into balls
and place on prepared trays, 3cm apart. Press
down slightly. Decorate with extra choc bits.
3. Bake for 15-18 minutes or until light golden
and cooked. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.
Store in an airtight container for up to 1 week.
What’s happening next week....
Just because we are in another lockdown doesn’t mean the fun has to stop a the Hive, next week we will
be making butterflies using old crayons and lava lamps.
Sharing a little more from Vacation Care:
Collaborative Art Project
‘Blast Off!’
During vacation care we had visual arts day to explore
many different art activities! Together we all created an
awesome space themed, collaborative art work.
We each received a piece of the puzzle and did our best
work to colour it in and add a pop of glitter! Once our
pieces were completed it was time to put the puzzle back
together. We first laid all the pieces down facing up to
match them. Then we carefully flipped it upside down to
tape together. We had to be very careful to get the
pieces in the right spots.
Once it was done we were very proud so we took a group
photo!

Riddle of the Week:
What 8 letter word can have a letter taken away and still make a word? Take another letter away and it still makes a word. Keep on doing that until you have 1 letter left. What is the
word?

District/Division Cross Country
Finally, our students were able to compete in this already twice delayed event and we
lucky to have a cool but mostly sunny day to run.
With 19 schools attending and up to 180 competitors in each race the students did well to
complete the course that was very muddy and challenging in spots.
We had many good finishing positions but as it was a combined District and Division event
only the top 12 places progress to the EMR event.
Congratulations to Thomas (7th), Oscar (8th) and Noah (5th) who will compete at the Yarra
Valley course (date to be advised).
Rescheduled Events
Unfortunately, the recent lockdown has led to further changes having to be made to
upcoming events.
EMR Cross Country - this will not run on the 22nd July as planned, SSV are working to
reschedule this event and a new date will be announced shortly.
Hooptime - this event will not run on the 22nd of July, Basketball Victoria are
working with schools to reorganise dates.
Winter Sport - this event will not run as part of the District/Division competition. We
are instead looking to run this event as a District Gala Day in Term 4.
Summer Sport - we are looking forward to these events proceeding as planned: 24th Aug
and 2nd September.
I understand these changes can lead to disappointment but please understand we are
working hard to reorganise these events.
STAY ACTIVE!
