Your Board of Directors

Message From The PresidentHello Neighbors:

Happy New Year! I hope you had a joyous holiday season and are now ready to begin succeeding in accomplishing your new year’s resolutions.

Every January those interested in serving the community step forward and express their desire to serve on your Board of Directors. This is a very important decision as Board members determine the policies that affect everyone who lives in SCAL. This year there are four openings that will be filled at the May 2018 Board of

Directors meeting and the term of commitment is for two years.

I ask each of you to seriously consider running and giving back to this beautiful community. Your tax bracket will not be impacted as the pay is zero, but your sense of self will be significantly raised, as you demonstrate your willingness to add real value to the lives of others.

Based upon the feedback I have received about the “Coffee with the Board” meetings, I am happy to report that they will resume this month on January 9 with an added feature of a presentation by a committee chair describing the purpose of the committee and how it works. This will provide more understanding of your community and how it functions, and will allow you the opportunity to ask questions.

We will continue “Coffee with the Board” into the future if there is enough resident interest.

Respectfully submitted,

Warren M. Geller, President, Sun City Aliante, Board of Directors

Holiday Hours In celebration of the New Year, the Administrative Offices and Community Center are closed on January 1. On Tuesday, January 2 the Community Center will open at 6 a.m. and the Administrative Offices will open at 8 a.m.

Who’s Your Daddy? We have all heard the term, but what does it really mean to you? This is what it means to me.

When our mother passed away in 1999, my sister and I asked the same question, “Who’s our daddy?”

Then I was 61 years of age, and I had never seen a picture

of my father and knew nothing about him. I

asked my sister, “When was he born? When did he die? Who were his parents? Did he have other brothers and sisters?” Up to this time, I could only remember a cousin, named Don, who fought in the Korean War; my sister found him. Now starts my adventure!

Don lived in the state of Washington. I found his phone number online and called him. We talked for about 20 minutes, and I made plans to visit him in a few months. During our time together, he showed me a picture of my father holding me when I was six months old and pictures of my mother at 17 years of age. He asked me if I knew that we had an uncle who was still alive, and I told him I did not. Don told me his name was Charles, and he lived in Fillmore, California.

Harry Reinhart,SCAL Board of Directors

Don had his phone number, so when I returned home (Reno), I called him and set up a time to visit him. Our time together was a big surprise, as I also got to meet another cousin and his three kids who came to meet us at his home. I was surprised to find out that Charles’ mother married his father in 1923, and they had two children, Jack and Charles. So now, I found out my grandmother, Olympia, who was born in 1894 and died 1931, had four other children with my grandfather, Harry Reinhart (Hey, that’s my name too!) I told you it was a big surprise, and there is more to come. Olympia’s first child was Don’s mother, Francis, who was born in 1906. She was the one who took care of the family, as Olympia was a heavy drinker and died very young. My mother and father lived with Francis for a time when they were first married.

As I researched my family tree on my father’s side, I found that my grandmother’s side came from Spain with a lineage dating back to the Spanish Conquistador Cortez who led an expedition that caused the fall of the Aztec Empire in Mexico. In the late 1790s, a Sergeant Lugo with his family and a group of other Spanish families moved into what is today Los Angeles. I also discovered my fifth great grandfather was the first Mayor of Los Angeles, and his land grant from Spain is now Los Angeles County. I have also found many, many cousins, as most of the early Spanish families had eight to 12 children.

Then I started researching the Reinhart side, and I found my family lineage dates back to the early 1600s with family coming from Germany in the early 1800s. I found many different spellings of my last name including, Rinehart, Reinhardt, Reinhard and Reinheart. I spell my name Reinhart. On my sister’s and my birth certificate, our last name is spelled Rinehart; so who’s knows? One of my family members fought in the Revolutionary War; a couple in the Civil War (Union side); and my grandfather, Harry Reinhart, fought in World War I, and my father (Lloyd) died in 1945.

All this may seem so unimportant to most of you, and I have not started to say anything about my mother’s side; yet, they are French Canadian and can be traced back to the early 1600s. Someone I was researching indicated a family member was a fur trader. So far, my research has taken 17 years and lots of rabbit trails. I have used many resources, Ancestry, My Heritage, the state of California, The Mormon Research Center, the U.S. Government Census and Our Lady Queen of Angeles Catholic Church. On my first disk from “Generations a Family Tree” program, I have found new family members – some 6,394 names

Happy New Year! Here’s hoping that 2018 is your best year ever, filled with fun, happiness and wonderful memories!

Procedure Time Change. Homeowners are asked to turn in Architectural Review Committee (ARC) applications by 3 p.m. on the Wednesday prior to the ARC meeting. This will allow all applications to go to the ARC Review Session and give homeowners additional time to provide any information necessary for the ARC to make decisions. All applications turned in after the cut-off time

will be submitted to the next ARC meeting. Once your application is approved, you will have 90 days to complete the project; and at that time, your project will be inspected by the committee.

It’s cold outside. Outdoor gas fireplaces and gas heaters are permitted in the rear yard, but they are limited to a maximum of eight feet in height. If you are located on the golf course, your fireplace must be set back a minimum of 15 feet from your rear yard lot line. Fireplaces are not permitted in your side or front yard. If you apply to the ARC for fire pit approval, the dimensions and set back requirements will be considered on a case by case basis, and you will be permitted to use only natural gas or propane gas.

Please remember when you do any work on the outside of your home to submit an application to the ARC prior to the meeting. The committee meets twice a month, so you will have lots of opportunity to submit and receive approval of your application in a timely manner. Almost all requests require you to complete a plot plan, which we can provide, and some requests require photographs and samples. If you have questions about your project prior to turning in an application, you are invited to attend the ARC Application Review that is held the Thursday prior to each ARC meeting starting at 8:30 a.m. in the Vista Room. All applications, plot plans and samples should be turned into this office by 3 p.m. on the Wednesday prior to the ARC meeting. The Architectural Review Committee meets at 8:30 a.m. on January 12 and January 26, and the ARC Review Sessions are scheduled for January 11 and 25 at 8:30.

Did you change your phone number, email address or your mailing address? Do we have current emergency contacts and their current phone numbers on file? Please take a few minutes to email Carol Garbarino, our customer service coordinator, at [email protected] to update your information today.

Just a reminder: please be advised that no signs of a personal and/or commercial nature are to be installed in either a permanent or temporary manner. Only “For Sale,” “For Rent” or “Open House” signs shall be permitted in the community.

If you have any questions please contact me, at 702-638-5006 or [email protected].

Meet Our Newest Activities Associate

Let’s give a warm welcome to Cinda Carpino who joined the Activities and Fitness Department on November 20, 2017 as an Activities Associate. Cinda was born in Hastings, Nebraska and grew up in Denver, Colorado. She worked for 24 years as an Oral Surgeon Assistant and Office Manager in Durango, Colorado and Las Vegas, and helped open two new dental offices. In 1993, she moved to Las Vegas. In 2001, she changed careers and took a position as Flight Attendant with Ryan Air, a charter airline. Right now, she said her biggest challenge is becoming familiar with the new RecTrac

program and making sure she completes all of her tasks in a timely manner. In her spare time, Cinda enjoys reading, crocheting, baking yummy treats and taking care of her three dogs (Hungarian Vizslas). Cinda likes interacting with SCAL residents and always keeping busy. She is very happy to become one of the newest members of the Activities Associates’ “Dream Team.” Please stop by and give her a warm welcome.

ASSOCIATION NEWSMeet Our New Assistant Manager and Director of Standards and Compliance

We are proud to give a very warm welcome to Nelenie Aronce, the newest member of our FirstService management team who has assumed the duties of Assistant Manager and Director of Standards and Compliance. She brings to this position a wealth of experience and knowledge, a passion for helping people and a desire for excellence.

Nelenie was born in Pampanga Province in the Philippines, and she moved to San Francisco at age 7 where she grew up. After high school, she moved to San Diego to attend college at California State University, San Marcos. She earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics and pursued Spanish as her minor. As part of the curriculum,

she studied abroad in Spain and Mexico at the University of Valladolid and the University of Tijuana.

As a college student, her parents gave her the responsibility of acting as property manager for a home they purchased in San Diego, which was part of an HOA. That’s where she gained her first experience working with tenants and learning the HOA rules and regulations.

Following college, she worked as an insurance agent and banker for ten years. Then, two years ago, after returning from a summer trip, Nelenie decided to follow a new career: Community Association Management.

“I’m passionate about solving problems for people and working with homeowners. I truly like working with people who take pride in what they do,” Nelenie said. “Because I’ve had the responsibility since age 21, I have learned to see everything from both sides as a homeowner and a property manager.”

Nelenie began her new career in Carlsbad, California, where she assisted in managing 22 properties. When the opportunity came up to work in Las Vegas, she was excited to move here to be close to her partner and his family and pursue her dream of a career in High Rise Property Management.

In late March 2017, she accepted a position at FirstService Residential Headquarters in Las Vegas as a Portfolio Manager Assistant for eleven HOA communities, assisting two managers. The HR Department was so impressed with her resume that she was hired the day after she interviewed, and she came to work a week later.

She had hardly settled into her new job at FirstService Headquarters when she was offered two new job opportunities in communities working on site. We are delighted that she chose Sun City Aliante. There were several reasons why SCAL came in first.

“I was excited to work with Damian Carrasco (SCAL General Manager) who has extensive experience in High Rise and Hotel Operations Management. There is so much I can learn from him,” Nelenie said.

“I also wanted to work in a large-scale community homeowners association and have the opportunity to gain knowledge and experience from skillful and educated leaders,” Nelenie continued. “All Sun City Aliante Board members have earned a DCAL Certification (Dedicated Community Association Leader). These things helped me to make my decision.”

Nelenie is a problem-solver who says, “Let’s talk. We’ll figure it out.” She welcomes the opportunity to sit down with homeowners to listen to their concerns and clarify any misunderstandings about HOA policies and procedures.

Looking back, she is proud of traveling to Europe on her own to attend University. In Spain, she studied in Valladolid, the death place of Christopher Columbus and home-turned museum of the famous writer Miguel De Cervantes, the author of Don Quixote. She also had the opportunity to stay with a host family.

Education is important to Nelenie. Her future career aspirations include obtaining a PCAM (Professional Community Association Management) designation. “It’s the highest recognition nationwide and internationally in the industry,” Nelenie explained. “So if there’s an opportunity to manage abroad, I would be qualified.”

In her free time, Nelenie is a voracious reader who loves to learn. She also enjoys shopping, traveling abroad, watching movies, laughing with her family and dining at quality restaurants. (Nelenie comes from a long line of gourmet chefs. She grew up working in her father’s Japanese restaurant and her close family members are experts in preparing Filipino, French and Italian cuisine.)

Please stop by and welcome Nelenie, and you will meet a charming lady who is excited about being part of the SCAL management team.

Happy New Year from your Neighborhood Watch Block Captains and Volunteers!

As we look ahead to 2018, let us offer you important safety tips to add to your resolutions list:

HEALTH AND FITNESSTee It Up With A ProBy Eric Eubanks, PGAMary, Queen of Scots, who was the queen of Scotland from 1542 to 1567, is believed to have been the first woman golfer - and tradition has it that she may also have been the first person to contribute the word dormie to the game of golf.

From French and Latin, dormie means to sleep or relax. In golf, it is a word used

in match play (like the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup) to indicate that one golfer (or team) is leading by the same number of holes as there are holes remaining - such as being 3 holes up with 3 holes to play. The dormy golfer can’t lose. They are at the point in the contest where they can relax a bit, knowing that even if their opponent won all of the remaining holes, the match would end in a halve (a tie) at worst.

Now back to Mary. The story goes that one day in Scotland while watching a golf match, Mary, who was fluent in French, saw that the golfer who was leading was up by as many holes as were left. She called out that he was dormie - meaning that he could just relax and almost sleep through the rest of the match because he couldn’t lose. And the term dormie stuck. We still use it today.

What You Already Know: The Benefits of MassageIn an age of technical and, at times, impersonal medicine, massage offers a drug-free, non-invasive and humanistic approach based on the body's natural ability to heal itself. So what exactly are the benefits to receiving regular massage and/or bodywork treatments?

- Increases circulation, allowing the body to pump more oxygen and nutrients into tissues and vital organs.

- Stimulates the flow of lymph, the body's natural defense system, against toxic invaders. For example, in breast cancer patients, massage has been shown to increase the cells that fight cancer.

- Increased circulation of blood and lymph systems improves the condition of the body's largest organ - the skin.

- Relaxes and softens injured and overused muscles

- Reduces spasms and cramping

- Increases joint flexibility.

- Reduces recovery time, helps prepare for strenuous workouts and eliminates subsequent pains of the athlete at any level.

- Releases endorphins - the body's natural painkiller - and is being used in chronic illness, injury and recovery from surgery to control and relieve pain.

- Reduces post-surgery adhesions and edema and can be used to reduce and realign scar tissue after healing has occurred.

- Improves range-of-motion and decreases discomfort for patients with low back pain.

RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT

It’s amazing when you reflect on the remarkable backgrounds of many residents who have been leaders in their particular industry, and how they use their skills now to bring joy and happiness to our community. This is particularly true of Margo Young, founder of our own Sun City Aliante Steppers and Debbi Halfhill, who stepped in recently to serve as assistant choreographer.

The story of the SCAL Steppers started in 2006, when Margo organized approximately 20 people to form a home exercise group after recovering from a serious illness. A short time later, a few people dropped out, and the remaining members all enjoyed dancing. One thing led to another, and Margo started a dance troupe serving as director, choreographer and dancer.

“Since the beginning, the Sun City Aliante Steppers have made steady progress to finally developing this dance ensemble into being recognized as one of the premier senior dance groups in the state of Nevada,” Margo said. “It has been such a privilege to work with the Steppers dance team and to witness their accomplishments over the years.”

Margo was born in Liverpool, England - the home of the Beatles, and grew up in a small country town in the Midlands, England. She started dance classes at age 3, and since then, she has spent her life moving and dancing to music. During school, she performed leading roles in traditional plays, such as the British Pantomime. By age 15, Margo performed in her first professional role in “Beauty and the Beast,” a production similar to a Broadway show.

This performance launched her professional career. In the summer, she performed at Blackpool, a sea resort, and then auditioned for the prestigious Charley Ballet in Paris, where she performed as a dancer for four years. In 1964, Margo moved to New York City to pursue modeling, acting and dance. At 5’9”, she was a statuesque, natural beauty. “I wanted to be on Broadway,” Margo confessed, “but I was too tall.”

She worked on the east and west coast securing television commercials and specials, which included working with many of Hollywood’s best: Lucille Ball, George Burns, Dolly Parton, Dom DeLuise, Tony Orlando, and many more. She was selected by Howard Hughes to do a commercial advertisement for his airline, Hughes Air West, along with Sammy Davis Jr., Paul Anka and Jimmy Durrante.

Margo’s career changed course when she moved to Las Vegas to become a professional showgirl in 1966. She was a dancer in the popular Casino De Paris at the Dunes Hotel for four years. Then she danced, as the principal dancer, in the Lido de Paris at The Stardust. After that, she performed in the hit show, Pzazz, at the Desert Inn. She also performed in the musical comedy “Funny Farm” at the Aladdin Hotel. In 1971, Margo won

the coveted Ms. Showgirl International Pageant.

She went to Hollywood in 1971 and took comedy classes with Dom DeLuise and worked on a pilot for an NBC television show. In 1974, she returned to Las Vegas to accept the role of lead dancer in Folies

Bergere at the Tropicana until 1979, when she stepped out of high heels and costumes, leaving her professional life behind.

During the next few years, Margo faced the health challenges of colon cancer and a fractured spine; but when she recovered, she triumphantly returned to the stage and her passion of dancing.

Margo was proud to claim the title of Ms. Senior Nevada in 2009 and represent the state. Her dance troupe – the Steppers -- was with her when she accepted the honors and supported her throughout her reign. The tradition of Steppers entering the Ms. Senior Nevada Pageant continued with Debbi Halfhill, placing as First Runner Up in 2012, and Rita Marantz, placing in the top five in 2013. Margo is very proud of the Steppers who are now the official dance group for the Ms. Senior Nevada Pageant held every year at South Point Hotel in Las Vegas.

Margo readily admits she did not do it alone. For many years, the late Pam Baltz was by her side serving as choreographer and artistic director. Pam also hailed from England and received six classical certifications from the Royal Academy of Dance in London. Before moving to Sun City Aliante, Pam successfully operated a dance school in New Jersey with 400 students. Her creative choreography is part of her legacy, which is still featured in the Stepper’s repertoire, ranging from jazz and country routines to elegant lyrical performances which continue to entertain.

With the passing of Pam, Debbi Halfhill stepped up to assume the duties of assistant choreographer of the Steppers and assistant to Margo. She was born in Olympia, Washington and lived in Portland and Seattle. Approximately 25 years later, she returned to Olympia and successfully operated (Debbi’s Dance Studio) for 35 years where

she taught tap, jazz, ballet and acrobatics. “I am so proud of my students. They are now performing on Broadway and in many of the shows on the Las Vegas Strip,” Debbi exclaimed. “In addition, one of my students, who owns Heather’s Dance Life in Las Vegas, was kind enough to bring her young students to dance at the SCAL Christmas Tree Lighting this year.”

“Today, the Steppers are a very active adult senior dance group with 18 dancers, ranging in age from 57 to 89 years old,” said Margo. “Our oldest and only male, Mal, is age 89 and still going strong. We are always looking for a few good men to join us,” Margo laughed. Are you out there?

According to Margo, the main thing that separates her dance team from other dance programs is that they are a non-profit group and all the classes are free. Additionally, members of the group are responsible for the cost of their costumes.

The Steppers are very active in raising funds for numerous charities. They have performed for the Candlelighters (raising money to fight children’s cancer); Meals on Wheels; the Alzheimer’s Foundation; the Jewish War Veterans; and the Ms. Senior Nevada Pageant.

The troupe has also performed at the Santa Fe Casino; Senior Idol; Senior Olympics winning gold medals; and many Sun City Aliante events, such as the Thanksgiving Dinner Celebration, the Christmas Tree Lighting and the

Hanukkah Celebration.

Margo invites everyone who loves to dance to consider joining them. You can stop by and see the Steppers practice any Tuesday or Thursday at 2 p.m. in the Fitness Studio in the SCAL Community Center. “Everyone can dance and enjoy movement no matter how old you are. Dancing does not have to be perfect, just fun,” Margo emphasized. For more information, contact Margo at 702-281-8219 or [email protected].

HOT TICKETSJames D. Gish in Concert: Performing “So In Love” “The Modern-Day Andrea Bocelli”

Summerlin Library Performing Arts Center Friday, January 19, Depart SCAL 6 p.m.

Join us on January 19 to hear the inspiring James D. Gish performing songs from his recent album “So in Love.” The album and concert set feature a wide variety of styles, from big-band to swing jazz to opera to musical theatre to classic rock, featuring works by Cole Porter and Elvis Presley.

Described as “the modern-day Andrea Bocelli,” James D. Gish’s voice is finesse combined with raw power culminating in a sound unlike anyone else in his genre today. Ranging from classical to jazz and classic rock, James’ music bridges the gap between the old and the new, where beautiful, timeless orchestral music finds new life in contemporary themes and vocal styling.

“It’s all about precision design and construction” explained SNNT President Dave Allen. “Each individual module contains track and scenery that depicts a railroad scene. In turn, each module can be connected to any other module to complete a railroad layout.”

According to Allen, model trains and railroad cars can be purchased locally and on-line. Train hobbyists can create a landscape or a scaled-down version of a city or town. “The fun part of building a fully operating model train with locomotives, cars and railroad tracks is in the details of construction,” noted Dave. “You can operate model trains by remote control, adding lights, sounds, blow whistles and have several trains operating on the same track.”

“Some people like to golf, play tennis or build model airplanes. We are passionate about building trains,” agreed Allen and Muha. “And we are excited about sharing our avocation with all the residents of Sun City Aliante. of the year, according to the Chinese lunisolar calendar. Chinese New Year always falls in the months of January or February, and each Chinese New Year is represented by one of the 12 creatures of the Chinese Zodiac … 2018 is the year of the Brown Earth Dog. The festival lasts for 15 days from Chinese New Year Eve to the Lantern Festival on the 15th day of the Lunar New Year.

The holiday is celebrated by Chinese populations in Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Phillipines, and in Chinatowns across the world - such as San Francisco, New York Chinatown and Las Vegas Chinatown. Chinese New Year traditions include thorough cleaning of the houses, decorating the windows and doors with red paper art, lighting fireworks, long parades, handing out money in red envelopes, and families gathering for their annual reunion dinners.

Dog’s Characteristics:

The Year of the Earth Dog 2018 is a good time for lifestyle changes (quit smoking or change residence) and for the start of new business ventures. Ranking as the eleventh animal in the Chinese zodiac, the dog is the symbol of loyalty and honesty. People born in the Year of the Dog possess the best traits of human

nature. They are honest, friendly, faithful, loyal, smart, straightforward, and venerable and have a strong sense of responsibility. If a dog happens to come to a house, it symbolizes good fortune.

We look forward to seeing you at this celebration. Please sign up at the front desk. Space is limited to 144 seats. Tickets are $20 for residents and $25 for guests, and they are not refundable. First come; first served. Please sign at the front desk.

NEWS & NOTESLung Force Walk 2017

Kudos to SCAL resident Mae Go and Activities Associate Jan Davis who led the SCAL Team in the 2017 Lung Force Walk, the first-ever charitable event, sponsored by the SCAL Activities and Fitness Department, on Saturday, November 18 in Symphony Park at The Smith Center. Approximately 18 SCAL residents and staff participated in the event, which was an inspiring celebration of breath, voice and spirit. The generous

donations from Sun City Aliante exceeded the Activities Department’s goal of $500, raising the amount donated to $877.00 to benefit the American Lung Association in its fight to help those living with lung cancer and other lung diseases to lead healthier, active lives. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated in this event!

New Year’s Tip from the Sun City Computer GuyMany of our SCAL residents’ computers are becoming infected with malware and viruses. These infections damage your computer, can steal your information and are expensive to repair. Most infections can be easily avoided if you heed this simple advice. “Never download anything offered by any web site!” This includes browser updates, flash updates, and missing fonts - nothing. A Windows 7, 8, and 10 computer comes from the factory with EVERYTHING you need to do anything on the internet or in email. If anything on your computer needs to be updated, Windows will update it automatically with no action needed on your part. So remember “Never download

anything offered by any web site!” It is most likely a virus.

If your computer has become infected, Jim Davis, Sun City Computer Guy, will clean it for free at his Computer Clinic every Thursday morning from 8 a.m. - noon in the SCAL Community Center.

Jim also answers your computer questions for free anytime at [email protected]. For more information, visit Jim’s web site at http://suncitycomputerguy.com

Aliante 8Ballers Fall Classic Turkey Shootout!

The Aliante 8Ballers took on the Sun City Summerlin Club in an eight ball tournament at the SCAL Community Center poolroom on Thursday, November 16. This tournament was a battle to break the tie between clubs over the past year. Summerlin showed up with 14 players to match up with the 14 players from the SCAL club.

Energy was high between both clubs. Hank Gulland and Barb and Randy Reid kept everyone on track, as they rotated teams and tables throughout the day. They managed to play a total of 44 games during the three-plus hour tournament. Everyone had a tremendous time, and both Aliante and Summerlin had some new players who were introduced to the interclub competition.

It was nip and tuck with both teams trading wins and losses. Just before lunch, the Summerlin Club had a small win streak. The Aliante team pressed hard, but they came up short this time and lost 25-19. Everyone at Aliante wants a revenge match early in 2018!

There are lots of thank yous to go around in making this event a huge success. Thanks to all our Aliante players making this the best tournament ever. Kudos to Hank Gulland, Wayne Krajec, Alan Weiner, Dave Meteyer, Bob Rowinsky, Fred Schagel, Doug Branley, Ernie

Thompson, Barb and Randy Reid, Don Barclay, Jim Tillman, John Burke, Dick Ritthaler, Gene Gustin, Jeff Gaither, and Teke Sankey for their heads up play. A big thanks to the Lifestyle Committee for getting behind this event and the SCAL staff for setting up a wonderful luncheon area for our guests.

In addition, members recently donated lap blankets and shawls to Silver Sky at Deer Springs, an assisted living facility where the seniors are always very grateful.

Twice this fall, members donated two large bags to the Foster Children of Clark County. Their gifts included sweaters, ponchos, hats and scarves, baby blankets and baby clothing to keep the children warm. The hand-made crocheted animals they donated meant so much to children who have so little.

The Forget-Me-Knots are a knitting, crocheting, needle work and jewelry-making club. They meet every Monday from 1-4 p.m. Members enthusiastically welcome new members who would enjoy doing one of their crafts. They have needles, hooks, patterns and yarn to help get you started.

If you have yarn that you no longer use, they ask that you please donate it to their club to help with their charities. You can bring donated items during club hours or leave it at the front desk of the SCAL Community Center.

The Songsters had a full singing schedule in December 2017, including performing for the Christmas Tree Lighting, the Festival of Lights, and two concert performances, “Sounds of the Season” on Friday, December 8 and Saturday, December 9. Seniors with Warm Hearts

The members of the Seniors with Warm Hearts would like to extend sincere thanks and gratitude for the tremendous outpouring of generosity from the SCAL community with the heartfelt donations to our annual “Holiday Giving Tree.” They were thrilled that we were able to supply gifts the children and their parents at S.A.F.E. House requested to make their holiday a little brighter. We are also confident that the teenagers who are supported by both Street Teens and Project 150 will appreciate receiving the items they requested, and the gift cards collected will help them in their day-to-day struggle to succeed. In addition, Project 150 was sincerely thankful for the many meals our community was able to provide for the teens in need and their families this past holiday season.

Their next meeting will be Thursday, February 15 at 11 a.m. in the Activities Room where they will discuss ongoing volunteer efforts at Project 150, Serving Our Kids and future projects as 2018 begins. I would like to express a sincere thank you to the Sun City Aliante community for all of your support this past year. Our pancake breakfast was lots of fun. During the picnic, we cooked and consumed lots of burgers and hot dogs.

Our spaghetti dinner was great. You all participated and showed your continued support of our efforts to help with the veteran’s community here in Las Vegas.

As always, our Auxiliary was also outstanding. The member’s contributions to the Veterans Hospital and Stand Down were truly a blessing to us all. Seniors Assisting Seniors, as always, brought much gratitude and assistance to the members of our community.

Veterans AuxiliaryHappy New Year from members of the Veterans Auxiliary! We trust you had peaceful holiday celebrations with family and friends. On December 5, to brighten the day of patients, Lynda, Carol, Judy, Phyllis

and Pam took lap blankets they made for veterans at the VA Hospital.

A big shout out to Boy Scout Troop 102 for performing the American Flag Retirement Ceremony and Troop 105 for helping put up the flags throughout our community. I always enjoy seeing the flags waving in the breeze, and it’s nice to have some "young legs" to climb the ladders to mount the flags. All of these events would not be possible without the volunteers who have given their time and energy to make it all happen. THANK YOU ALL!

Our next meeting is on Tuesday January 16, 2018. So, all veterans are invited to join in our merry band. We hope to see you there.

Please remember to continue to pray for our brave men and women who are serving in faraway places protecting our ability to enjoy these events. We can all be very proud and honored by their sacrifice.

toothbrushes and toothpaste. A donation box will be placed near the front desk in the community center at that time. They are seeking the help of community residents who wish to donate for this great event to help needy and homeless veterans. Your donations from last year were very well received and very much appreciated.

WHY DO MY GUMS BLEEDEVEN WHEN THEY DON’T HURT? Healthy gums don’t bleed. If you observe bleeding under the gums, don’t assume that it isn’t serious. Bleeding should alert you that more serious problems lie ahead if the condition is left untreated.

And while this condition may not keep you awake at night like other types of tooth pain, it can cause severe and life-threatening problems. According to the American Academy of Periodontology, people with periodontal disease are almost twice as likely to have heart disease.

Recent findings from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show that one out of every two American adults over the age of 30 has periodontal disease. The statistics get worse as we get older; research indicates that adults aged 65 and older have a 70.1% likelihood of having periodontal disease.

Even if you’ve managed to avoid periodontal disease until now, it is especially important to practice a meticulous oral care routine as you get older. Receding gum tissue exposes the roots of teeth and makes them more vulnerable to decay and gum infection. A number of recent studies have linked gum disease to a staggering list of debilitating and deadly health problems, including heart disease, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, stroke, lung problems, tooth loss and even erectile dysfunction among others. What can you do about it? Conclusions clearly show that daily brushing and flossing, along with a balanced diet and regular dental visits are a powerful weapon in the prevention of heart attacks, strokes, and other heart disease conditions.

Why dental visits? Daily cleaning will help keep calculus formation to a minimum, but it won’t completely prevent it. A professional cleaning at least

twice a year is necessary to remove calculus from below the gum line where your toothbrush and floss can’t reach.

Focusing on preventive dental care will enable you to address a condition, such as bleeding gums, at an early stage and save not only higher costs for dental care but alsoyour natural teeth! If this article addresses a condition that you have encountered, procrastination will only lead to more complicated conditions.
