Things to watch out for in final paper

• No contractions– Don’t do not, can’t cannot, won’t would not

• Affect (verb) versus Effect (noun)– Taco Bell affects my stomach in a really bad way.– After about an hour, the effects are noxious.

• Watch out for rhetorical questions– One can be effective• After one, it loses its effect quickly!

• Look for wordiness– Cut it out• Simpler sentences are more powerful

• Watch out for who is saying, stating, etc

• Wrong: The New York Times states, “XYZ” ().• Right: Clint Brayloke, a New York Times writer,

Books don’t talk or argue, the author does!

Quotation Marks

Wrong: He wished that” I could end it all “(Blatt 21).

Right: He wished that “I could end it all” (Blatt 21).

Wrong: Surinsky argues, “I taught them this.” (Fhat).Right: Surinsky argues, “I taught them this” (Fhat).
