Musical Tips from Marianne Gedigian
Embrace the things you do well! Music is for everybody – send the music all the way
to the back of the hall!
The air is a tornado in the mouth – use it! Play with vulnerability and find what motivates you!

Katherine Borst Jones presented a guest artist recital, master class and technique class for the students of Emily
Butterfield (DMA 2003) at Central Oklahoma University in Edmond, OK on September 15-16. On October 4, she
was featured as soloist with the Ohio State University Collegiate Winds, performing Concertino Classico by Philip
Sparke. Jones is also featured in the most current Ohio State Alumni Magazine article “Healing Hands” by Jo
McCulty and Mary Alice Casey. On October 19, she premiered Three Studies in Water for flute and marimba by
Jacob Reed with marimba player Ryan Kildore at the Ohio Music Teachers Association State Conference held at
Cleveland State University. The piece, dedicated to Katherine Borst Jones, was written by Reed as part of the
Composer of the Year program. Reed has a BME in music education and a masters degree in composition and
music theory from Ohio State.
Last spring, Cosmos Trio (Mary E.M. Harris, viola; Katherine Borst Jones, flute; and Jeanne Norton, harp)
performed two pieces from their newly released CD at the Lyon & Healy Harptacular (Columbus). Stephen Paulus'
"Petite Suite" and Stephen Main's "Columbus Triptych" are featured on American Premieres, which has received
critical acclaim:
“What a beautiful recording this is!... The Cosmos Trio performs with a lovely feeling for color and balance and a
terrific sense of ensemble. They clearly listen to each other as they play and truly interact with each other...
Everything on this disc was commissioned for or by the trio, whose affection for and belief in the music is
palpable... The recorded sound conveys a sense of space but not at the expense of clarity. The performances are,
as you will have gathered from my comments, first-rate. There are informative notes... a particularly attractive
disc.” Henry Fogel, Fanfare (May/June 2018)
