The state's Covid taskforce has suggested increased tracing and tracking of contacts to curb the spread of the virus, in addition to people wearing masks and observing public distancing and hygiene norms. As reported by The Free Press Journal, the state govern- ment, plans to increase the detection and tracing of contacts through a door-to-door survey and thereby curb the spread of the in- fection. This move comes after repeated calls to the district administration by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackray and Public Health Minister Rajesh Tope, directing stepped-up tracing, tracking, testing and treatment. Al- ready, the number of progressive cases has crossed the 8 lakh-mark while the number of deaths are above two lakhs. On Thursday, there were a record 18,000-plus positive cases in the state. A public health department official said, in 31 districts less than 10 contacts of Covid-19 patients had been traced, against the stipulat- ed norm of 20 people laid down by the ICMR. ‘‘The rise in cases is a matter of serious con- cern. They are rapidly increasing, especially in rural areas, although the cases in Mumbai are also surging. Tracing and tracking are therefore important to avoid spread of virus,’’ he noted. CONTD. Among those to be arrested are Showik Chakraborty, brother of actor Rhea Chakraborty; Samuel Miranda, Sushant Singh Rajput’s former house manager; and one Kaizan Ibrahim. They were all arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau late on Friday in connec- tion with the drug angle, which initially surfaced in phone chats that suggested Rajput had access to narcotics substances. The arrests were a sequel to day-long questioning of Showik and Miranda, after the agency carried out a house search at their residences early morning under the provisions of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Sub- stances Act, 1985, (NDPS Act). Later, at noon, she was picked up and questioned for over seven hours following which she was formally arrested. Ragini had on Thursday said she would appear before the Central Crime Branch (CCB) on Monday, but the police suspected that she would use the breather to destroy evidence of the drug racket. In a statement in the evening, Bengaluru Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Sandeep Patil said, "Ragini Dwivedi has been arrested and taken into custody." Besides the actress, two people – a businessman named Rahul and Viren Khanna -- were arrest- ed, taking the number of people in custody to four. According to Patil, Viren Khanna is a big catch. "He (Khanna) is the main person who organises big parties where drugs are consumed. He was in Delhi and two CCB police in- spectors had gone to Delhi and arrested him," the Joint Com- missioner said. On Thursday, the police had ar- rested K Ravi Shankar, a clerk in the Road Transport Office. He al- legedly had close links to Ragini and was supplier of drugs to the actor. Despite being a clerk, Ravi Shankar had a lavish lifestyle and attended high-end parties with Rahul. They obtained drugs from foreign nationals, it is claimed. ‘‘After rigorous questioning, we learned that he (Ravi Shankar) was attending parties and procuring drugs from various places. Uni- versities should provide these students with provisional cer- tificates of semester exams conducted till now." Meanwhile, the exam commit- tee of VCs has submitted its pro- posal, with 11 requests and di- rections to universities. Samant said, "Major directions include: Universities should conduct practical and viva exams through Skype, meeting apps or via telephone; universities should start practical exams by September 15 and if not, then they should complete practical exams by September 30 at the latest. The entire exam process, with result declaration should be completed by October 31." The committee has proposed various exam modes, such as blended online and pen and pa- per, multiple choice questions, optical mark recognition (OMR), open book or assign- ment-based exams from home. Samant said, "This proposal should be discussed by the aca- demic councils and boards of examination of the respective universities at the earliest. Af- terwards, all universities should submit a final decision on the mode of exams and the exam schedule to the state by 12pm on September 7." His comments came against the backdrop of a major build- up of Chinese artillery and in- fantry in the South Pangong re- gion of eastern Ladakh, where the Indian Army is now perched at several key heights, thereby wresting a strategic advantage. "The nation can count on us," said General Naravane, who was on two-day visit to Ladakh where he also met troops deployed at forward posts along the LAC. "The situation along the LAC is tense. We have undertaken pre- cautionary deployment in some areas. The troops are prepared for all contingencies that may arise. All these actions have been carried out only along the LAC," the Army Chief said. Having spent time with the commanders and troops and af- ter making a first-hand assess- ment of the situation, the Army chief returned to Delhi on Fri- day afternoon. "It was very satisfying to see our soldiers and local command- ers in high morale and good health. Mira-Bhayandar adding to caseload DIPTI SINGH / Munbai Municipal Commisioner Iqbal Chahal has attributed the steady rise in the rate of infection growth in the Dahisar- Borivli- Kandivli belt to the unrelenting rise in Covid-19 cases in neigh- bouring Mira-Bhayandar. Raising concerns about "poor civic amenities in the area", Chahal told The Free Press Journal that Mira-Bhayandar should be made part of the Brihanmumbai Mu- nicipal Corporation (BMC). According to Chahal, it is the lack of health infrastructure to fight a pandemic as deadly as Covid-19, that has caused cases to spike in Mira-Bhayandar and the rest of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and this, in turn, has increased the load on the Mumbai's hospitals and testing facilities over the past few months. "Besides cases coming to Mumbai for treatment, there is a regular influx of people from Mira-Bhayandar towards Mum- bai. This has impacted neigh- bouring areas, such Dahisar, Borivli, Kandivli, Malad and Goregaon, derailing the recovery rate," Chahal said. "The nation can count on us," said General Naravane, who was on two-day visit to Ladakh where he also met troops deployed at forward posts along the LAC. "The situation along the LAC is tense. We have undertaken pre-cautionary deployment in some areas. The troops are prepared for all contingencies that may arise. All these actions have been carried out only along the LAC," the Army Chief said.

Having spent time with the commanders and troops and af-ter making a first-hand assess-ment of the situation, the Army chief returned to Delhi on Fri-day afternoon.

"It was very satisfying to see our soldiers and local command-ers in high morale and good health. It gives me confidence that they are well prepared to safeguard the territorial integri-ty of our nation," said General Naravane, adding that Indian Army is known for its commit-ment and resolve.

Municipal Commisioner Iqbal Chahal has attributed the steady rise in the rate of infection growth in the Dahisar- Borivli-Kandivli belt to the unrelenting rise in Covid-19 cases in neigh-bouring Mira-Bhayandar. Raising concerns about "poor civic amenities in the area", Chahal told The Free Press Journal that Mira-Bhayandar should be made part of the Brihanmumbai Mu-nicipal Corporation (BMC).

According to Chahal, it is the lack of health infrastructure to fight a pandemic as deadly as Covid-19, that has caused cases to spike in Mira-Bhayandar and the rest of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and this, in turn, has increased the load on the Mumbai's hospitals and testing facilities over the past few months. "Besides cases coming to Mumbai for treatment, there is a regular influx of people from Mira-Bhayandar towards Mum-bai. This has impacted neigh-

bouring areas, such Dahisar, Borivli, Kandivli, Malad and Goregaon, derailing the recovery rate," Chahal said.

Stating that Mira-Bhayandar re-gion is posing a hurdle in the re-covery of Dahisar, Kandivli and Borivli, Chahal suggested that the area should become part of BMC.
