A number of silversmiths in Bulelengsaid that silverworks of the region contin-ued to be sought by consumers from out-side Buleleng. Even, their orders contin-ued to come recently. But, those craftsmenwere unable to fulfill such large amount oforders because they lived through capitalcontinued to rise.

With such condition, a number of sil-versmiths in Buleleng were forced to closetheir business temporarily. Some silver-smiths remained to survive, but they onlyworked on the orders that had agreed withthe new price in accordance with the ris-ing price of raw material.

Made Panca, one of the silversmithsfrom Patemon Village, Seririt Subdistrict, said that he previously purchased silver rawmaterial at IDR 4,500 per gram, now roseto IDR 7,500 per gram. Since the price hikeof silver, his production cost continued toincrease. Unfortunately, though the priceof raw material had increased but the sell-ing price of the silverworks produced werestill at old prices because he worried if hiscustomers would purchase similar handi-craft from silversmiths in other region.

The price of a ring was IDR 150,000and if calculated pursuant to the currentprice of silver it should be sold at IDR240,000. Nevertheless, he still sold it atold price. Meanwhile, ritual parapherna-

gency became popular center of silverworks production in Bali. BeratanVillage in Buleleng Subdistrict and Patemon Village in Seririt Subdis-trict were two of them. Ritual paraphernalia such as bowl, jug andother silverworks produced by Buleleng crafters were always soughtafter by residents of Tabanan, Badung and Jembrana. Even, numer-ous products of a number of crafters could have penetrated the exportmarkets. However, those silverwork centers located at several villagesin Buleleng are under threat to go bankrupt because the price of silvercontinues to rise lately.

lia like bowl was still offered at old priceranging from IDR 120,000 to IDR 300,000per piece. “It’s been lasting for long timeand we are unable to do nothing in responseto this condition. Now, the most importantis how to survive though the profit is verylittle. Even, we can only reach the breakevent point,” he said.

According to Panca, since the increaseof price, silversmiths did not dare to pro-duce stock and only worked on the or-ders that had been guaranteed by downpayment. It was the only attempt thatcould be carried out in the middle of sil-ver price hike lately. “If there are no or-ders we prefer not to work because ifforced to produce stocks our capital doesnot suffice to purchase silver,” he ex-plained.

Similar situation was disclosed by sil-versmiths at Beratan Village, BulelengSubdistrict. Price hike of silver was re-ally striking their business and now theywere only able to serve the order of coat-ing services. Fortunately, the silver coat-ing services remained to be sought afterthese days, so craftsmen could survivethough their profit was not the same aswhen the price of silver was normal. “Iprovide more silver coating services be-cause it requires less silver than produc-ing new products,” he added. Beware of terrorist threatsMigrants must be strictly overseen

Denpasar, Ida Bagus Alit Wiradana, toBali Post on Tuesday (Jul 26).

According to Budiana, vigilanceagainst the areas of regional migrantas highly vulnerable area infiltrated byterrorism were not an excessive suspi-cion or without reason. It could be as-certained that not all dwellers wereequipped with population administra-tion required so their presence in Balicould be categorized into illegal. In ad-dition, many of those migrants had un-clear job so their activities in Bali wereworth suspecting. “To handle those il-legal regional migrants, I do hopeDenpasar Municipality, regency gov-ernment and Bali government to havethe courage to forcibly repatriate thoseillegal migrants to their home of ori-gin. Moreover, we have been backedup by legal instruments such as Re-gional Regulation No. 14/2002 (on

Population Management InformationSystem—Ed) that justifies us to takesuch a firm measure,” remindedBudiana.

This professor employed inUndiknas University asserted that im-position of strict sanctions could notbe interpreted that Bali went up againstthe regional migrants because it wasnot applied blindly. Conversely, mi-grants who were willing to complywith all provisions required were con-sistently given the right to live andsettle in Bali like any other citizens.“Not only Indonesian citizen, any citi-zen from all over the world has theright to stay in Bali. However, beforedeciding to stay in Bali, they shouldcomply with population administra-tion required,” he said.

Budiana warned that Bali had beendevastated by the incident of terrorist

attacks for two times through the Balibombing I and II. Both bloody blastincidents happened were inseparablefrom the awareness level of Balinesepeople tending to weaken in monitor-ing the movement of illegal migrantsin their territory. “To anticipate the oc-currence of similar incidents, I do hopethe owners of boarding and rentedhouses to consciously report the ex-istence of those migrants staying intheir houses to local authorities. Do notwait to submit the administrative re-quirement until the coming of popu-lation raid,” he reminded.

UncompromisingWhen contacted separately, Sub-

district Head of West Denpasar, IdaBagus Alit Wiradana, claimed toagree with Budiana. It was affirmedthe sanction of forcible repatriationto illegal migrants netted in popu-lation raid in Denpasar was indeeduncompromising. To dwell inDenpasar, they had to equip them-selves with valid identity card, rec-ommendation letter, and certificate

of competency/skills issued by theauthorities in their region of origin.

Above all else, they were alsorequired to have a guarantor ensur-ing that their existence in Denpasarwas not for negative or illegal ac-tivities. In addition, they wereobliged to report their existence inDenpasar to authorities at local vil-lage as well as to propose migrantidentity document (KIPP). “With-out completed with such docu-ment, do not blame if DenpasarMunicipality forcibly repatriatesthem to their home of origin. Moreover, if those migrants havebeen proved to have unclear job inDenpasar,” he said.

Furthermore, Alit Wiradana as-serted that his party regularly or-ganized policing operation to pre-vent the entry of illegal migrantsto Denpasar area. Leading sectorof this policing operation wouldbe entrusted to each administra-tive village (desa dinas) in syn-ergy with customary village (desapakraman).

The killing of al Qaeda leaderOsama bin Laden was a “significantmilestone” and “substantialprogress” has been made against alQaeda, but the group still poses atop terrorism threat to the UnitesStates, Matthew Olsen said at hisconfirmation hearing before theSenate Intelligence Committee.

“That threat is not so much fromthe senior (al Qaeda) leadership inPakistan with one unified goal, it isnow diffused in various regional lo-cations under various leaders andwith various goals,” he said.

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula(AQAP), which operates in Yemen andclaimed responsibility for a December25, 2009 attempt to bomb a U.S.-boundpassenger plane, “has shown a willing-ness and a level of capability to strikein the United States,” Olsen said.

Al Qaeda’s affiliate in Somalia alsohas shown a willingness and abilityto strike outside that country, he said.

If confirmed by the Senate, Olsenwill become director of an agency cre-ated in the aftermath of the September11 attacks as the hub for analyzing andsharing terrorist threat information.

Senator Dianne Feinstein, whochairs the intelligence committee, ex-pressed concern that the period beforethe tenth anniversary of the attacks, which killed nearly 3,000 people inNew York, Washington and Pennsyl-vania, was one of “heightened threat.”

CAIRO — Egypt’s top reformleader Mohamed ElBaradeicalled Tuesday for the formationof a broad coalition of politicalforces, including the Islamists, tocontest the first elections sincethe ouster of President HosniMubarak.

The call by the Nobel Peacelaureate, whose supporters werecredited as a key force behindEgypt’s uprising, reflected grow-ing concerns of liberal groupsabout a big win for the well-or-ganized Islamists, especially theMuslim Brotherhood. Thatwould give the Islamists powerto control the drafting of a newconstitution.

No date has been set for par-liamentary elections, but they areexpected before the end of theyear, followed by a presidentialvote. The political factions andmilitary rulers who replacedMubarak in February are sharplydivided over how to proceed withthe transition to democracy.

A broad coalition of the politi-cal forces that worked to oustMubarak could also be a responseto growing fears that former re-gime figures may make a strongshowing in the vote under a newelection law which leaves roomfor vote buying. ElBaradei, a po-tential presidential candidate, alsoappealed to the military rulers toreverse their rejection of interna-tional monitors for the elections.

Temple CeremonyCalendar Event for July 9 through August 6, 2011

EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date forit annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 daysaccording to Balinese calendar, including the smallerancestral shrine which each family possesses. Becauseof this practically every few days a ceremony of festi-val of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebratedthe same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan,Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day,Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place onthe same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. Whennew moon is used then the celebration always happens onnew moon or full moon. The day of course can differ thereligious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full daywith some temple celebrating for three days while the cel-ebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is neverless than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressedwith pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimespainted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifullyarranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. Infront of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellasdepending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

BUENOS AIRES,Argentina — A giantiron portrait of Eva Peronwas unveiled Tuesday onthe front of Argentina’ssocial development min-istry building, where shegave a historic speechprior to her death fromcancer in 1952. The 31-meter-high (102-feet-high), 24-meter-wide(79-feet-wide) workweighing 15 tons re-sembles the iconic por-trait of Argentine revolu-tionary Ernesto “Che”Guevara in Havana,Cuba.

Argentina PresidentCristina Fernandez, whoinaugurated and backedthe portrait, said it wasduring a visit to Cuba thatit occurred to her to payhomage to the wife offormer President Juan Domingo Peron.

“I saw an image of Che on the ministry building he worked in.How is it possible that a society pays tribute to a man who is not fromthat country and we have no tributes to a woman who not only markedthe entry of women into politics and the country’s most importantsocial revolution, but who also represented the people and countrywith more passion than anyone in history,” Fernandez said.

The portrait was unveiled at 8:25 p.m. local time, the hour whenthe woman knows as Evita died on July 26, 1952. The portrait wascreated by Argentine plastic artists Daniel Santoro and AlejandroMarmo.

It hangs from the ministry building on one of Buenos Aires’ mainavenues. It was here that Evita, with advanced cancer, announced onAug. 22, 1951 that she was stepping down from her candidacy for thevice presidency on her husband’s ticket.

The government plans to unveil another portrait of Evita on thenorth side of the building on the 60th anniversary of the “resigna-tion.”orange lights during an unveiling ceremony in the 59th anniver-sary of her death in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Tuesday, July 26, 2011.

A tropical storm killed at least 20 people in the Philippines as it dumped enormous amountsof rain that caused major flooding and landslides, authorities said Wednesday. Nock-ten, namedafter a Laotian bird, was expected to cause more damage in the mountainous northern areas ofthe main island of Luzon on Wednesday, while also bringing heavy rain to Manila, the stateweather service said.

the seas to calm down beforesending emergency supplies byair and water to those provinces.

“We can’t use the army trucksbecause the roads are flooded,”he said. The council said dozensof flights had been cancelled be-cause of the storm.

Nock-ten had initially beenexpected to pass much closer toManila, the nation’s sprawlingcapital of 12 million people, andschools were closed across thecity on Wednesday as it preparedfor heavy rains.

Ramos said Nock-ten was fol-lowing an erratic course and thatthe latest forecast showed Manilaand other densely populous areaswould be spared the worst of the

storm. “It did not follow its pro-jected track,” he said.

Nevertheless, the new coursewould still mean about four mil-lion people in mountainous areasof northern Luzon were underthreat, and landslides there werea danger.

State weather forecasterJuanito Galang told AFP windstrength and rain volumes usu-ally dissipated when a cyclonehit a wall of mountains, insteadof going over flat land.

“But the danger there is, if rainfalls on a mountaintop, it willrush down slopes. The tendencyis for the water to go down asflash floods or cause landslides,”Galang said.

JAKARTA - A graphic video showing the last hoursof a rare Sumatran tiger as it writhes in a trap in Indo-nesia exposes the gruesome toll of rampant rainforestclearing, Greenpeace activists said Tuesday.

Greenpeace Southeast Asia forest campaignerZulfahmi said the trap was set up by villagers tocatch wild pigs on a logging concession owned byAsia Pulp and Paper (APP), one of the world’s big-gest paper and packaging companies.

“The tiger died in a spot which is located on anAPP concession. Due to land clearing by the com-pany, the tigers have to leave their habitat,” he toldAFP.

“We urge the company to stop its land clearingactivity in Indonesia... to avoid endangered ani-mals becoming extinct.”

Estimates of the number of Sumatran tigers re-maining in the world range from 300 to 400. Sev-eral die each year as a result of traps, poaching orother human actions.

The 18-month-old tiger died within three hoursof being tranquillised by local conservation offi-cials, said Greenpeace media campaignerZamzami, who witnessed the incident.

The Greenpeace video shows the animal in ob-vious distress as it tries to pull its blackened pawfree of the rope trap.

He said the number of people who

start smoking at a younger age wasalso increasing over the years withonly 7 percent of teenagers smokingin 1995 then 12 years later the num-ber is increasing to 19 percent.

He said the latest survey showedthe effectiveness of cigarette indus-try in wooing customers and, on thecontrary, the weak side of the gov-ernment in protecting teenagersfrom smoking.

Abdillah said the increasing num-

ber of smokers in Indonesia wascaused by the large population andeconomy, ineffective implementa-tion of free-smoking spaces in pub-lic places and the weak regulationson smoking consumption control.

“There are four instruments thatneed to be implemented to decreasesmoking habits namely raising theprice of cigarettes through tax, re-stricting cigarette advertisements, putting image of various smoke-re-

lated diseases in the cigarettetapackages and effectively introduceand implement free-smokezones,”said Abdillah.

Meanwhile, Vice Chief of UI‘sDemographic Research Center,Dwini Handayani, said smokingneeds to controlled in the society. However, she reminded that super-vising the flow of cigarettes wascostly and needs a strong will fromboth the government and people.

fell into the trap. It couldn’t eat or drink, its pawhad turned black already and there were many fliesaround it,” Zamzami said.

Veterinary surgeons were called to the scene inSumatra Island’s Riau province but were unable tosave the tiger, he said.

A spokeswoman for Singapore-based APP saidany suggestion that the company’s operations re-sulted in the death of the tiger were “not only grosslyinaccurate but deeply offensive”.

“The death of any Sumatran tiger is a tragic situ-ation. Unfortunately human-tiger conflict has longbeen a reality of life in Indonesia,” spokeswomanAida Greenbury said, putting the blame on localvillagers.

A tiger conservation organisation that receivesAPP funding also blamed local people, dismissingenvironmentalists who say loss of habitat throughdeforestation is the main cause of dwindling tigernumbers.

“It’s the local people who set up the animal trap.Unless APP set up the trap, then we cannot blamethe company,” Sumatran Tiger Conservation Foun-dation organizer Bastoni told AFP.

He said the tiger died “on the border of the aca-cia forest and the APP concession”.

Greenpeace says logging by APP and other com-panies is destroying the tiger’s habitat and drivingthem into ever closer and more dangerous contactwith people.

Frenchman sentenced oneyear possessing marijuanaAntara

DENPASAR - The Denpasar district court here sentenced a Frenchman,Karim Chabbit (33), to one year in jail after finding him guilty of possessing44.6 grams of marijuana.

“We hereby sentence him to one year in prison, and order the defendantto remain in custody and pay Rp5 thousand in court proceeding costs,” saidpresiding judge Amzer Simanjuntak when reading the verdict here onWednesday.

In the trial with the agenda of verdict reading, the judge said that Karimwas proven legally and convincingly to have abused narcotics in the form ofmarijuana.

It was stipulated in article 127 paragraph 1a Act (Law) RI No.35/ 2009on Narcotics, and according to the panel of judges, Karim was only provedas a user.

The verdict handed down by the judges was lower than what the publicprosecutor, I Ketut Sukada, had demanded, namely one and half year in jail.

A factor that relieved the defendant’s sentence during the trial is due tohis polite attitude and confessing his actions, while the matter incriminatingthe defendant is his acts could damage younger generation, and Bali’s tour-ism image either.

Earlier, in a trial with pledoi agenda, Karim which was accompanied byhis lawyer Made Loster defended himself as a drug addict, and expectedonly snared by Article 134 of the Criminal Code regarding drug addict witha lower penalty.

Hearing the verdict, the defendant Karim and the prosecutor stated tothink about the verdict handed down by the judges.

Karim was arrested by police on Monday (March 28) at Villa Jepun,Krishna Street, Legian, Kuta, after the police received information fromresidents about the presence of foreign citizen who used drugs.

The police when conducting raids against Karim, found three packagesof marijuana, each of which is found in the bathroom with a gross weight of6.25 grams and the other two packages were found in Karim’s room locatedon the 2nd floor with the gross weight of each 19.31 grams and 18.50 grams.

Karim had told the police that the marijuana belonged to him and thathe had to use it to ease the pain from an injury he had sustained in anaccident. He had done it on the advice of his doctor in France.

DENPASAR - The percentage of Singaporean visit to Bali isincreasing along January-June 2011 as it touches the highest peak. Its 34 percentage increase emphasizing foreigners pleasure andtourist safety in this region, said Bali Tourism observer, Drs DewaRai Budiasa in Denpasar on Monday.

The coming of Singaporean to Bali recorded 41,534 visit dur-ing January to June 2010 into 55,690 visit during the first sixmonths in 2011. Tourism visit of Asia people is getting much de-crease like Japanese, Taiwanese, and South Korean. They are stillcontributing stable visit but Singaporean tourists are getting in-crease. The decreasing Japanese tourists are worrying as it drasti-cally decreased since last year. It decreased 89,490 persons dur-ing January to June 2011.

Japanese visit is drastically decreasing about 26% if it is pre-ferred than early 2010 as it touched 121,045 persons. Taiwanesedecreased 1,6% from 66,478 persons into 65,364 persons. Manyfactors are causing the decrease of Japanese tourists. One of themis the difficulties of getting air transportation from Japan to Bali.

Singapore is an international destination so it will be potentialto grab foreigners to spend their holiday in Bali, said Budiasa.Besides it needs harder promotion and an advance to fix the qual-ity of Bali Island. The natural beauty of Bali and the custom ofBali people are still attracting foreigners to visit this island. Itproved by the increase visit of foreigners as much as 10,9% or1,271,470 persons in the first six months of 2011.

The Butterfly Park in Tabanan is one of the smaller attractionswithin reach for people in the Kuta area. Tabanan is one of the 8kabupaten (districts ) of Bali and its main town is also calledTabanan. The Butterfly Park (Taman Kupu Kupu) is located 7kmsnorth of the town of Tabanan, at Wanasari, on the road to Penebel. The ride takes about an hour from Kuta.

The museum is located 50 meters off the road, but is easy tofind, due to the massive sign outside. The neat grounds and park-ing lot, lead into the souvenir shop and ticket office. Thesekeysrings had a bug attached, the perfect gift for those relativesyou hate. I was surprised that the cost of admission was 40,000rp.That’s a bit steep for Bali.

The entrance to the museum is close by, and after passing througha couple of doors, and a set of hanging chains, you are inside thenet-covered garden. Immediately you’ll see large yellow and blackbutterflies fluttering around, like bar girls at a Seminyak nightclub.Butterfly watching is a strange hobby, if you aren’t used to it, asthese little creatures like to hide. It’s not like walking through themonkey forest, with hoards of friendly animals spilling out. At leasta butterfly won’t try to steal your water bottle.

In the center of the garden is a section, that contains cages witha variety of butterflies and insects, including this stick insect andleaf insect (those are my scientific terms). The gardens contain pondsand a variety of bushes and plants. The Bali Butterfly Park covers3,500m sq, making it the largest park of its kind in SE Asia. Thepark provides an environment for butterfly preservation and study.

YOKOHAMA - Nissan Motor Co reported a smaller-than-expected 10.4 percent decline in quarterly operating profit onWednesday as it recovered swiftly from a parts shortage thathammered the industry after the March 11 earthquake.

Japan’s second-biggest automaker posted an operating profitof 150.37 billion yen ($1.93 billion) for the April-June period, more than double the average of 70 billion yen estimated byeight analysts polled by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

“This result is good enough to make me almost forget aboutthe negative impact of the earthquake,” said Naoki Fujiwara, afund manager at Shinkin Asset Management in Tokyo.

“I see a big chance of an upward revision to their annual out-look when they announce first-half results,” he said, calling thefirst-quarter results a positive surprise.

Nissan, 43 percent owned by Renault SA , is poised to out-shine Toyota Motor Corp and Honda Motor Co this year thanksto a faster recovery from the supply disruption and aggressiveexpansion in China.

Honda and Toyota, which will report earnings on August 1and August 2, are both forecast to post an operating loss, al-though comparisons favor Nissan because it books earnings fromChina at the operating level under Japanese accounting rules.Toyota and Honda use U.S. standards, which require their Chi-nese earnings to be booked as equity on the bottom line.

“In light of the historic scale of the disasters, we think thefirst-quarter results are remarkable and a testament to the strengthof Japanese manufacturing and its suppliers,” Joji Tagawa, cor-porate vice president of finance, told reporters.

Nissan kept its forecasts for operating profit at 460 billionyen and net profit at 270 billion yen for the full year to March2012, below consensus forecasts.

Nissan is planning to boost sales by 9.9 percent to 4.6 millionvehicles this year, driven by projected double-digit growth inChina and Europe. Earlier this week, Nissan outlined mid-termgrowth plans for its Southeast Asian and Chinese operations, calling for big gains in market share.

A shortage of microcontrollers and other components hit Japa-nese production in April, but Nissan managed to eke out gainsby the following month, leaving rivals in the dust.

Globally, Nissan’s production rose 9.5 percent last quarterand sales grew 10.6 percent to 1.056 million vehicles.

First-quarter revenue rose 1.6 percent to 2.08 trillion yen, butnet profit sank 20 percent to 85.0 billion yen as a 10-yen fall inthe dollar to an average 81.7 yen during the first quarter slashedoperating profits by 55 billion yen.

On Wednesday, the dollar was trading even lower, around 77.6yen, against Nissan’s assumption of 80 yen for the year.

Global automakers also face growing risks of an economicslowdown as debt worries escalate in the United States and Eu-rope, while demand for cars has slowed in China, the world’sbiggest auto market.

Ford Motor Co on Tuesday reported a better-than-expectednet profit, but remained cautious about consumer demand, say-ing it expected U.S. sales for this year to be at the bottom end ofits forecast of 13 million to 13.5 million vehicles.

“Monetary tightening in emerging markets and the U.S. debtproblems could be a strategic risk for Nissan,” said Shinkin’sFujiwara. “If we start seeing an increase in inventory levels, thecompany’s aggressive growth strategy could backfire.”

Nissan’s shares are the best-performing Japanese auto stockso far this year, gaining 12 percent, while Tokyo’s transport sec-tor subindex has risen 2 percent. Before the results, Nissan’sshares closed down 1.9 percent at 846 yen.

A small majority of economists —30 out of 53 — surveyed over the pasttwo days said the United States willlose its AAA credit rating from oneof the three big ratings agencies —Standard & Poor’s, Moody’s or Fitch.

Respondents saw a 20 percentchance of a new recession over thenext year, a prospect that some econo-mists say has been compounded bythe acrimonious political fight overwhat is normally a procedural legis-lative vote on the debt.

Lawmakers have one week left tohash out a deficit-cutting plan with-out which Republicans in Congresshave said they will not raise the legal$14.3 trillion debt limit, risking a po-tentially devastating government debtdefault in August.

Downgrade and default wouldhave vastly different consequences.A ratings cut might raise the risk ofrecession by hurting confidence, butmight allow financial markets tomuddle through the next few monthswithout incident. A default, however, would send shockwaves through theglobal financial system that couldkick-start a new financial crisis, ana-lysts say.

Even if this worst-case scenario isnot borne out, a firm majority of re-spondents — 38 out of 54 — said theuncertainty brought about by the po-litical acrimony over the debt has al-ready hurt economic growth.

The U.S. economy had alreadybeen under stress in recent months.Gross domestic product expandedjust 1.9 percent in the first threemonths of the year, and the secondquarter is not expected to have faredmuch better. Industrial production hasslowed and employment nearlyground to a halt in the last twomonths. The jobless rate climbed to9.2 percent in June.

“This whole debt ceiling debatedoesn’t seem to be making anyoneany more confident,” said SeanIncremona, economist at 4Cast Ltd.in New York.

Goldman Sachs argued in a re-search note recently that the declinein consumer sentiment over the lastfew months has been disproportion-ate to the economy’s slowdown, peg-ging the debt battle as a culprit.

The government’s first reading onGDP in the second quarter will bereleased on Friday.

South Korea economic growthslows in second quarter

exports, which account for about halfof GDP, rose 1.8 percent in the sec-ond quarter from the previous quar-ter, slowing from a 3.3 percent rise inJanuary-March.

The fall came amid growing glo-bal uncertainty sparked by theeurozone debt crisis and a possible USdebt default.

The second-quarter performancewas slightly below the central bank’sinitial estimate early this month andthe market’s expectations.

However the bank said growth islikely to pick up to 1.5 percent in boththe third and fourth quarters, indicat-ing the economy remains on a robustrecovery track.

“Exports of tech products re-mained weak last quarter mainly be-cause prices of flat panel and chipshave not yet recovered,” said KimYoung-Bae, director general of itseconomic statistics division.

“The pace of overseas shipmentsslowed down but as the level of ex-

ports remained sound overall, itwould be hard to say that exports stayweak.”

Kim stuck by the bank’s full-yeargrowth forecast of 4.3 percentgrowth, while the finance ministry’sprediction is 4.5 percent. GDP grew6.2 percent in 2010, the fastest ratefor eight years.

“The second quarter is the bottom. The strengthening won will help im-prove the trade terms, limit importedinflation and enhance consumers’purchasing power,” Shinhan Invest-ment Corp economist Lee Sung-Kwon told Dow Jones Newswires.

Park Sang-Hyun, a chief econo-mist at Hi Investment and Securities, told Yonhap news agency the second-quarter growth figure was weakerthan expected as export gains cooled.

“In the third quarter, the growthrate will be higher than the second-quarter one, but the pace is not likelyto be steep given external uncer-tainty,” said Park.

Organizers say the Canadian festival will launchSept. 8 with “From the Sky Down,” a chronicle ofthe Irish band led by singer Bono. The film wasmade by “An Inconvenient Truth” director DavisGuggenheim and marks the first time in its 36-year history that the Toronto festival has openedwith a documentary.

Guggenheim said the film explores why “thisband has endured and thrived.” The four-memberband formed in 1978 and has been turning out hitalbums since the early 1980s, including “War,”‘’The Joshua Tree,” ‘’Achtung Baby” and“Zooropa.”

“In the terrain of rock bands, implosion or ex-plosion is seemingly inevitable. U2 has defied thegravitational pull toward destruction,” saidGuggenheim, an Oscar winner for “An Inconve-nient Truth” who also made the 2008 musicaldocumentary “It Might Get Loud,” featuring U2guitarist The Edge, Jimmy Page and Jack White.

Director Cameron Crowe (“Almost Famous”)ventures into musical documentary with anotherToronto premiere, “Pearl Jam Twenty,” tracing theband’s formation and how its members pulled backfrom the spotlight to cope after its rise to stardom.

Singer Madonna also is headed to the Torontofestival, as director of “W.E.,” a film that intercutsbetween the romance of a modern woman (AbbieCornish) and the relationship of American social-ite Wallis Simpson and Britain’s King EdwardVIII, who abdicated the throne for love in the1930s.

Toronto is among the world’s largest film festi-vals, a spot where Hollywood studios and inter-national filmmakers debut many prospects that willbe in the running for next February’s Oscars.

Researchers at the University ofAlaska, Fairbanks, studied arctic groundsquirrels, giving them a caffeine-like sub-stance to awaken them from hibernation.

Another substance was given to themat various times of the year to see if it couldstimulate parts of the brain that encour-age a molecule called adenosine to attachitself to the receptors, causing sleepiness.

But those days are still a long way off.The researchers found that they could in-duce torpor, or the state in which oxygenconsumption falls to one percent of restingmetabolic rate and core body temperatureapproaches freezing, consistently only insquirrels who were awoken from hiberna-tion in the midst of their sleeping season.

Essentially, they could wake up a hi-bernating squirrel and then get it to goback to sleep.

However, when they tried to inducehibernation outside of the regular season,it worked in just two of six squirrels dur-ing the early hibernation season, but notin any during the summer when squirrelsdo not hibernate.

“We show for the first time that activa-tion of the adenosine receptors is suffi-cient to induce torpor in arctic groundsquirrels during their hibernation season,”said Jinka.

The Italian squad decided to switch to anew specification of wheel nut from the Brit-ish Grand Prix, hoping to get rid of the is-sues that had marred Massa’s chances ear-lier in the year, and to also improve its speed.

At the Nurburgring, Ferrari made sixpitstops of which four were flawless, butMassa lost time in his final stop after aproblem with the new wheel nut.

VALENTINO Rossi insists his Ducatiteam must do more in order to makeprogress towards the front despite admit-ting he felt more comfortable during lastweekend’s race in Laguna Seca. The Ital-ian, who has struggled with his bike thisyear, finished in sixth place in the UnitedStates Grand Prix after using the DucatiGP11.1, the development bike based onthe 2012 chassis. Rossi, who finished over30 seconds off race winner Casey Stoner, admitted the set-up used in America wasa step forward, but conceded there wasmuch more work to do.

“We have problems with the front, es-pecially when the bike leans heavily, butwe need bigger modifications to solvethem: we’ll see how long that takes,” Rossiwas quoted as saying by Gazzetta delloSport. “Following the Hondas and theYamahas, you realise the difference isquite big: each turn they manage to get onthe gas a bit earlier than we do so, by the

VITALY Petrov says he is confident that Renault willenjoy an upturn in fortunes through the second half of theF1 season as the Russian prepares for the final race beforethe summer break this weekend in Hungary.

Petrov secured a points finish in the German Grand Prixlast weekend but was left far from happy with the result ashe came home behind the Force India of Adrian Sutil andSauber’s Kamui Kobayashi.

However, despite that disappointment, Petrov has backedhis team to fight back through the second half of the year, with team boss Eric Boullier having already called on theEnstone-based squad to improve ‘quickly’ to try and getback ahead of Mercedes in the title race.

“Well, I scored another point but we should be finishingmuch higher up the points,” Petrov said as he reflected onthe Nurburgring race. “We’ve said that time and again, butwe brought good developments to the car last weekend, perhaps lacked a bit of luck and didn’t capitalise on ouropportunities. What’s noticeable is there are other teamsbeginning to compete seriously with us, such as Force In-dia and Sauber, so we need to take the initiative and makea significant step forward to stay ahead of these guys.

Ferrari still has toimprove pitstops

Ferrari admits it has to work onperfecting its pitstops after FelipeMassa lost time during its final stopin the German Grand Prix.

Ferrari’s head of track operations Di-ego Ioverno said the team is still work-ing on improving its pitstop performance.

“Since the beginning of the year wehave had various issues with pitstops, which we are currently fixing step by step, knowing that this year, with so manystops, anything can happen and indeedwe have seen other teams also experiencedifficulties in this area,” said Ioverno.

“Our issues concerned the car itselfand the jig of the tools we use and espe-cially the wheel nuts, where we have hadseveral problems. Silverstone was the first

race we ran with a completely newspecification of wheel nut, which hasbeen very interesting, because in theBritish Grand Prix, our pitstops werethe quickest in the race.

“Then, in Germany we were againusing this new wheel nut, which doeswork better, but the system is still notperfect and, at Felipe’s last tyrechange, we lost the connection be-tween the wheel nut and wheel nutgun, which cost us around one and ahalf seconds. So we have more workto do on perfecting it.”

Rossi wants more Ducati progressend of the lap, the gap gets quite big.

“We’ve found a good set-up here, butwe must do more: the objective is to bequicker and make the Desmosedici easierto ride for everyone.

“We’ve brought back home what wecould, but we had hope to be quicker. We’ve scored 108 points: the objective isto reach 200 in the second half of the sea-son.” Ducati team manager VittorianoGuareschi said the behaviour ofBridgestone’s tyres this year was a bigpart of the problems.

“Our bike is like handling an eel: yougrab it from one side, but it slips awayfrom the other side. The Desmosedicidoesn’t turn, and if it does it’s not in anormal manner,” Guareschi toldMotosprint. “On our bike the frontBridgestone tyres works differently com-pared to the other bikes, and our riderslack feeling.

“I don’t know what they have done, or

what has happened, but this year’sBridgestones have certainly changedcompared to 2010: they are evenharder, making it difficult for our bike.

“We are unable to understand what’sdifferent compared to before. The rid-ers feel loss of front grip and slide side-ways at turn entry, and this seems evenstranger considering that Nicky has thesame set-up as last year. It doesn’t addup, but the reality is that our bike slidessideways without warning.

“All our riders crash this way. Thetyre doesn’t warn them when it letsthem down.” He said the GP11.1 wasnot improving the situation, but rathermaking it worse.

“No, in fact the problem is evenworse. You struggle even more to findthe balance. Now, however, Jeremy(Burgess) is back, and we are usingagain his working method that hasbrought so much success for Valentino.
