For the second weekend in a row, Universal claimed No. 1 and No. 2 at the box office, with the Afghanistan war film “Lone Survivor” earning $12.6 million in its fifth week. With a cumulative total of $93.6 million, the relatively inexpensive “Lone Survivor,” starring Mark Wahlberg, will soon cross the $100 million mark.

“I, Frankenstein” had a sizable budget,

estimated at $65 million, yet opened with just $8.3 million. Starring a beefed-up Aaron Eckhart as Mary Shelley’s famous monster in a modern-day setting, the 3-D film wasn’t screened for critics and came into the weekend with little buzz. Lakeshore Entertainment financed the film, which was distributed by Lionsgate. With $13 million in overseas box office,

“I, Frankenstein” could scare up better business internationally.

Two family films trailed “Ride Along” and “Lone Survivor.” The animated squirrel comedy “The Nut Job” made $12.3 million in its second week for Open Road Films. Disney’s juggernaut “Frozen” added $9 million for a 10-week domestic total of $347.8 million.

MADRID — It was a short story, then a Hollywood movie. Now the tragic tale of cowboys in love is being reinvented again: Brokeback Mountain — the opera. Ahead of its world premiere in Madrid, author Annie Proulx told The Associated Press that the form of opera presented an opportunity to explore the complexities of the tale in a way neither her own short story nor the movie by director Ang Lee were able to do.

Proulx said that she “rejoiced” when composer Charles Wuorinen approached her to write the libretto because she understood that an opera “would give room, which the short story did not,

and which the film was not particu-larly interested in doing,” to open up the characters involved in the doomed love affair. Wuorinen said he tried to give the menacing nature of the rugged Wyoming landscape a greater presence in the opera than in the short story and cinematic versions.

“It is very beautiful as the film shows,” Wuorinen told the AP, “but it is definitely not sentimental, it is not a romantic landscape, it’s a deadly one — it’s dangerous.” This forbidding natural backdrop is represented by Wuorinen’s sometimes atonal style — one that pre-sented the singers with a steep learning curve.

“The music is very challenging,

there’s no question about that,” said Canadian bass-baritone Daniel Okulitch, who appears as one of the cowboys in the pair — Ennis Del Mar.

Love scenes between Del Mar and fellow cowboy Jack Twist, performed by American tenor Tom Randle — which caused a stir when the movie was first aired — are depicted discreetly on the opera’s minimalist stage, where the starkness of the mountain is presented as a looming projection onto a white background.

Wuorinen’s score makes use of a wide range of percussion instruments that convey many sounds, including the wind and rain on the Brokeback Mountain, and the work is in English.

NEW YORK — The Kevin Hart comedy “Ride Along” continued to speed through a typically quiet box-office frame, while the monster thriller “I, Frankenstein” couldn’t be roused from the dead. Universal’s buddy cop comedy “Ride Along,” co-starring Ice Cube, cruised to the top of the box office again, taking in $21.2 million in its second weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday. The film last week set a January debut record, with $48.6 million over the three-day holiday weekend.

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

SINGARAJA - Rainy season has now become one of the causes of dengue fever mosquito development. To anticipate the development and transmission of the dengue mosquito in the community, each family member can carry out a triple action known as covering bathtub, draining bathtub regularly and burying vacant cans. Buleleng County itself has attempted to help the preventions of the dengue fever transmission. One of them is by spraying or known as fogging.

According to Deputy Regent of Buleleng I Nyoman Sutjidra, people whose territory was not affected by dengue fever mosquito requested a fogging. Related to illegal charges, his party denied if there was any illegal charge to fogging.

“Fogging is borne by the government within a radius of 100 meters, but sometimes people asked for more. Probably, this kindles a perception if there are charges and it is not true. For example, there was an allegation of charges occurred in Tejakula. Having been investigated the hamlet infected by dengue fever had been fogged. Even, the other hamlet also asked to be fogged. It was an independent request, for example, there may be a charge of transport. While the diesel fuel and sprayer are provided by the government,” he said.

Sutjidra affirmed there was absolutely no charge for fogging in the community. His party had confidence that relevant agen-cies had done it in accordance with the rules and prevailing procedures. “We reaffirm there are no charges. But, there was indeed a request of fogging from residents of other hamlet. They could only feel peaceful when their area has been fogged. It’s a psychological matter and they will feel more secure against dengue mosquito when their neighborhood has been fogged,” he affirmed. Made Puja Arianta, the Head of Buleleng Health Agency, said the fogging activities in the community was an attempt to eradicate mosquito breeding.

His party claimed to have carried it out in appropriate with the standard operating procedures. To undertake the fogging, there were several steps to be followed. Firstly, when a patient came to hospital and suspected of suffering dengue fever, the hospital would make observation and diagnosis by taking patient’s blood sample. Then, a checking out was made to the neighborhood where the patient lived.

“If the patient is indeed exposed to dengue fever, the hospital will report it to the Health Agency. With a complete identity, the team comes down to location or residence of the patient along with clinic staff having the authority for the area,” he said.

Arianta explained that his party always conducted an inves-tigation at the patient’s home and its surroundings. Then, it was resumed with the checking out of the bathroom environment, sewers and water reservoir.

If any mosquito larva was found, it could become an indica-tion of dengue fever. The checking was then continued to around the patient’s residence whether there was a similar dengue fever disease. If such indication was found, epistemologically there were indeed people affected by the dengue fever.

“We will make a conclusion whether a neighborhood needs fogging. The fogging is carried out at the location having the potential for the development of dengue mosquito, and extended to a radius of 100 meters. It is done in two cycles, namely in the first week and the second time in the follow-ing week. Fogging does not resolve the problems, but people can do the triple action to eliminate the mosquito nest once a week,” he said. (dgk)

It was announced by the Head of Klungkung Transportation, Communi-cation and Informatics Agency Dewa Made Sutarta when met in the roro vessel, Sunday (Jan 26). Such a plan had long been made. The roro vessel was still considered to have the capa-bility of increasing the capacity from the previous one without disturbing the balance of vessel. Addition of the passenger seat had been discussed with the head of the agency and proposed to the Regional Secretary of Klungkung Ketut Janapria recently. Unfortunately, the proposal could not be included in the Parent Regional Budget 2014 as well as in the budget amendment later. As planned, the addition of seat would be carried out when the vessel would be docking for a month in October or before the celebration of Galungan and Kuningan.

“Addition of the seat is made coin-ciding with the docking so as not to in-

terfere with the passenger services,” he said. The addition of one hundred pas-senger seats, according to him, had been in appropriate with the feasibility study made by the Udayana University. So, no worries arose if the addition would disrupt the balance when sailing. The addition was designed to spend a budget of IDR 300 million. Meanwhile, the cost of docking this year was designed at IDR 1.5 billion. “Apparently, our pro-posal can have been accommodated in the Regional Budget 2015 because this year is not possible,” he said.

The addition of passenger seat was also expected to boost the regionally generated revenue (PAD) from the roro vessel that had always been minus from the operating cost throughout the year.

Every year, the total operating bud-get of the roro vessel approximately reached over IDR 5 billion. Mean-while, the revenue gained approxi-

mately reached IDR 3 billion more. In other words, it remained to need a subsidy of IDR 1.5 billion. Actually, in the particular feast or piodalan in Nusa Penida, the number of passenger was often overcrowded and they eventually could not be served.

Therefore, this opportunity should be utilized. The Nusa Jaya Abadi roro vessel was purchased in 2006 valued at IDR 18 billion with the main engine having the capacity of 2 x 80 HP and weight of 629 GT. The vessel was launched on April 28, 2007 by Presi-dent Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. The vessel has a length of 39.50 meters, 11.60 meters wide, 3 meters high and the speed is 12 knots. The number of crew on board comes to 14 people, with a capacity of 6 trucks, 8 regular vehicles and 210 passengers. Since the year 2006, it has been operating every day to cross as far as 11 miles from Padangbai to Nusa Penida. (kmb31)

SEMArAPUrA - Klungkung Transportation, Communication and Informatics Agency plans to add one hundred passenger seats in the Nusa Jaya Abadi roro vessel. Such addition is made based on consideration that the vessel capacity remains feasible. In addition, it is also meant to anticipate the surge in passengers to Nusa Penida and vice versa during holidays.

The TDRS system is so vital it’s considered a national asset. A modern-day human space pro-gram would be difficult if not impossible without the constant coverage provided by the TDRS satellites, said Badri Younes, NASA’s deputy associate ad-ministrator for space communi-cations and navigation. Ground stations — limited in number — would provide just a fraction of that capability.

Each satellite has a pair of dish antennas 15 feet (4.5 meters) in diameter. “Not only are we get-ting global coverage 100 percent of the time, we are getting it in real time,” Younes said, snapping his fingers, at a news conference earlier this week.

“Without such support, we’d

have to live with coverage around the 10 to 15 percent,” he said. “No human spaceflight program can be supported at this data rate. And even our ability to respond real time to emergency would di-minish drastically. So that’s why the TDRS has been declared as a national asset.”

NASA is the primary user; the TDRS system also occasionally assists other countries’ space agencies and the U.S. military. In 2002, a TDRS satellite allowed Massachusetts doctors to oversee knee surgery performed at the South Pole.

This newest $350 mill ion satellite — which will work its way up from a temporarily low orbit — is designated “L’’ in the TDRS series. NASA will rename

it TDRS-12 once it’s checked out in orbit, by late spring. NASA launched its first TDRS in 1983 aboard a space shuttle. The previ-ous satellite, TDRS-11, soared in January 2013.

Officials said they need six active TDRS satellites in orbit at any one time, along with a ready-to-go spare. The newly launched, Boeing-built satellite will serve as an extra spare. The next in the series — TDRS-M — will be launched sometime in the early 2020s.

Of the 11 previous TDRS satellites, six remain in service, one is in orbital storage, two are retired and one, No. 11, is still undergoing testing. No. 2 was destroyed with the space shuttle Challenger and crew in 1986.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida — NASA’s super-high-flying fleet of communication satellites just got bigger. An unmanned rocket blasted into a chilly, clear sky Thursday night carrying the latest, third-generation Tracking and Data Relay Satellite. NASA uses the TDRS satellites to support the International Space Station and Hubble Space Telescope, among other craft. The network is 22,300 miles (35,886 kilometers) high, at various locations above the equator, and allows continuous two-way contact with the space station and its six inhabitants.

SAO PAULO — Scientists have made the first discovery in 100 years of a new river dolphin species in the waters of the Araguaia river in Brazil’s vast Amazon rainforest. The discov-ery of the “Inia araguaiaensis” was officially announced earlier this week in a study posted online by the Plos One scientific journal.

The study’s lead author, biologist Tomas Hrbek, of the Federal University of Amazonas in the city of Manaus, said the new species is the third ever found in the Amazon region.

“It was an unexpected discovery that shows just how incipient our knowledge is of the re-gion’s biodiversity,” Hrbek said by telephone. “River dolphins are among the rarest and most endangered of all vertebrates, so discovering a new species is something that is very rare and exciting.” He said “people always saw them in the river but no one ever took a close up look at them.”

Hrbek added that scientists concluded the large dolphin was a new species by analyzing and com-paring DNA samples of several types of dolphins from the Amazon and Araguaia river basins.

“The Araguaia dolphin is very similar to its Amazon river cousin although somewhat smaller and with fewer teeth,” he said. He added that there were about 1,000 “Inia araguaiaensis” dol-phins living in the 2,627 kilometer-long (1,630 miles) river.

AntaraDENPASAR - The Bali provincial administration will

again carry out mass vaccination against rabies in April 2014, targeting around 350 thousand dogs.

The mass vaccination will target all dogs in Bali and will be implemented until June 2014, Putu Sumantra, the head of the Bali Animal Husbandry and Health office, said.

The vaccination activities which will include vaccine supply, field operation, and campaign, are estimated to cost around Rp12 billion.

“The fund allocation from the Bali regional budget will be around Rp5.6 billion and from the State Budget Rp6.4 billion. The allocation from the State Budget is bigger because it is used to buy the rabies vaccine. Currently the vaccine stock which is available in Bali is 105 thousand doses, and 250 thousand more are needed,” he explained.

The mass vaccination campaign will be the fourth to be conducted by Bali. Last year, 356 thousand dogs were vac-cinated in Bali.

The number of dog bite cases in Bali tends to be quite high, namely 100 cases per day, according to Sumantra.

“In the previous years, it was 130 bites per day. We hope the number of dog bite cases will decrease in the future,” he said.

“The first rabies death case was found in Bali in 2007. The death toll has reached 146 now,” he stated.

The decrease in the percentage of foreign tourist visitation in 2012 was mainly due to the world economical crisis. In 2012, foreign tourist visitation to Bali grew by just 4.9 percent, to 2.8 million people.

“There’s something wrong, who has the right to replace the Latin scripts just for the reasons of simplic-ity? What is the difficulty to learn the original scripts? So, it is very pragmatic and the tradition destroyed will vanish. Do not blame if the disap-pearance is caused by the outsiders, but by our own people,” he said when met in Denpasar.

Bali indeed did not leave the Balinese scripts (anacaraka—Ed), but the government and the House were still considered not to pay at-tention to the continuity of Balinese scripts, including the Balinese lan-guage. Sutjaya exemplified that the Balinese Department was currently deserted of enthusiasts because there was no hope to be teaching Balinese language. This happened following the policy of central government that integrated local language subject into the other subject.

“Although the subject of Balinese language remains to exist, it is now

frivolous because it has not been set forth in a Law. Have a look at the teachers of Balinese language, they are confused because they do not get allowance and are unable to take certification because the ruler, parliament and government are not interested. You can see how many students who take major in the Bali-nese language. It has dropped today because there is no hope of getting their allowances,” explained Sutjaya coalesced into the Alliance of the Balinese Language Care.

The man who had published 20 books asked the government in order it wanted to emulate Yogyakarta. This gudeg (jackfruit soup) city was self-financing the teachers of local language who had been ignored by central government. According to him, Bali region supported by tourism was very capable of doing the same measure. Unfortunately, local govern-ments were not too much concerned about the Balinese language.

“They (the rulers—Ed) do not know that by neglecting it the tourism will devastate immediately. Initially our cultural tourism sold the culture

and nature. Then, people heralded the integrated tourism where everything is for sale and we are becoming a commodity. When the commodity

is not saleable, nobody dances and nobody plays gamelan, what will be sold next, drugs, sex and gambling?” he said irritably. (kmb32)

DENPASAR - In Indonesia, Bali is the only region that still maintains the traditional scripts as the original ones three thou-sand years ago. It is in contrast to the other traditional script such as that of Sundanese, Javanese, Madurese and Sasak. According to a lecturer from the Faculty of Letters, Udayana University, Prof. I Gusti Made Sutjaya, the other regions pos-sessing traditional scripts had started to replace their scripts with the Latin alphabet.

One of the customers of the PDAM Denpasar, Made Bagus Su-diana, recognized the flow of water had been disrupted since Thursday afternoon. He said that he was forced to use a pump in order to get clean water. All this time, his party was focused on utilizing the water of the PDAM. “When the water flow gets a problem, we become overwhelmed. For drinking water, we can buy, but bathing, washing and toilet requires not a few amount of water. It is a problem when the water of the PDAM does not run,” said the resident living on Jalan Nangka Selatan.

When confirmed to Director of the PDAM Denpasar I Gede Ma-haputra, his party did not dismiss the existence of the service dis-ruption last Saturday. It happened because one of the large sources of surface water, namely the water of Ayung River was turbid. “An avalanche occurred in the upstream area, so the flow of water became turbid,” he said.

Such condition had a broad im-pact on the PDAM services. Turbid raw water could not be processed quickly in the water treatment at Blusung. The water of Ayung River becoming the water source of the PDAM distributed to its customers mixed with mud and was turbid. “The level of turbidity reached 3000 NTU,” added Mahaputra.

As a result of the incident, ap-proximately 72,500 customer con-

nections of the PDAM, especially in the area of North Denpasar, West Denpasar and partly in East Den-pasar, got disruption or jammed. “Hopefully, the water of Ayung River can quickly clear off, so that it can be processed and the water delivery to customer can return to normal as soon as possible,” said Mahaputra.

He said the avalanche occurred in the upstream of Ayung River had impact on the raw water treatment process. The disaster affected the Ayung River channel becoming one of the sources for its surface water.

Meanwhile, the Production Divi-sion Head of the PDAM Denpasar I Wayan Satya Graha said that his party currently had three problems. Firstly, the floodgate at Peraupan was hampered by coconut trunk, so the water intake could not reach maximal discharge. Secondly, the discharge gate of the PDAM Ba-dung (north of the building owned by the PDAM Denpasar—Ed) could not be closed because it was hampered by tree trunk so the water could not reach the minimal limit of 5 meters for production. Thirdly, the installation of water channel was also clogged by tree trunk.

As a result of the disaster, the turbidity rate of the water enter-ing into the processing installation (IPAL) at Blusung reached 3000 NTU (nephelometric turbidity unit). In normal condition, the water

turbidity was only 500 NTU. Since the water turbidity was above the high thresholds, the water process-ing sourced from the Ayung River was disrupted.

When the weather was back to normal, his party estimated that within two days it could produce as usual. However, he made sure that it did not affect the water production of deep well. On that account, some customers could still be served ac-cordingly.

As observation at the Blusung processing installation, dozens of officers were seen cleaning the wa-ter channel leading to the processing installation. The channel was filled with rubbish and clogged by logs drifting from the upstream area. In addition, there was a siltation caused by mud flowing from the upstream. “These conditions have caused the production to be unable to run normally,” said Spokesperson Dewa Sumardika while showing off

the piles of logs being cleared.Such cases were also ever ex-

perienced by the PDAM Denpasar in March 2012. Due to avalanche in Kintamani, the production was also disrupted. The customers of the PDAM in North Denpasar, West Denpasar and partly South Denpasar were disrupted at that time. The turbidity rate of water getting into the Blusung processing installation reached 36,000 NTU. (kmb12)

BADUNG - The culprits of windshield shatter look to in-creasingly roam around. After taking action in the area of Sem-pidi, Badung, they now shift to the area of Jimbaran, South Kuta, Badung. Windshield of the ve-hicle belonging to Moh Aszhary Sjamsudin, 43, was shattered by criminal, Tuesday (Jan 21). The

victim living on Jalan Gunung Lebah Gang 4B, Monang Man-ing, Denpasar, was reported to experience a loss worth IDR 150,516,000.

As information obtained, the windshield shatter action occurred in the office parking area of the PT Kharisma Pratama on Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai, Jimbaran, South Kuta, Badung.

His vehicle was parked and

left. After a long time, the victim was back because his car alarm sounded and found the windshield had been shattered.

“The victim saw the vehi-cle windshield was broken. He was shocked and immediately checked,” said one of the officers, Friday (Jan 24).

When checking the black ve-hicle with license plate DK 909 DG, an amount of money was

no longer in place. Previously, the victim put money as much as IDR 150,516,000 in the baggage. “The culprit seemed to shatter the windshield and then harmed the baggage lock. Then, the money was looted by the culprit,” he said while asking not to publish his identity.

Service of PDAM Denpasar in three subdistricts disruptedBali Post

DENPASAR - A number of customers of the Municipality Water-works (PDAM) Denpasar complained about the service as the water flowed sluggishly, Friday (Jan 24). The water did not flow into the client’s home. This condition mostly occurred to customers of PDAM Denpasar. As a result, the customers in three subdistricts namely the North Denpasar, West Denpasar and East Denpasar were partially overwhelmed to get clean water. Justice Minister Elena Lukash

said early Monday that she would ask the national security council to impose a state of emergency if the protesters don’t quit the building. But she did not specify a deadline for leaving.

Imposing a state of emergen-cy likely would cause anger to spike among protesters, who have clashed with police repeatedly over the past week. Three protesters have died.

Lukash, in a televised statement, noted that the “so-called protesters” seized the building as ministry em-ployees were working on measures to grant amnesty to protesters and to make changes in the constitution to return the country to a system where the prime minister’s powers are stronger.

Beleaguered President Viktor Yanukovych on Saturday offered the prime minister’s post to Arseniy Yatsenyuk, one of the opposition’s most prominent leaders. Yatsenyuk, while not flatly rejecting the offer,

said protests would continue and that a special session of parliament called for Tuesday would be “judg-ment day.”

It’s not clear if constitutional changes will be on the agenda for that session, but granting more power to the prime minister could both sweeten the offer and allow Yanukovych to portray himself as seeking genuine compromise.

The prospect of a state of emer-gency comes after other official statements suggesting the govern-ment is considering forceful moves against the protesters in the wake of the violent clashes between demonstrators and police over the past week. Three protesters died in the clashes, two of them after being shot and the third of unspecified in-juries. Authorities have said police do not carry the sort of weapons that allegedly killed the two men who were shot.

Interior Minister Vitali Zakharch-enko, one of the ministers most de-spised by the protesters, on Saturday

warned that demonstrators occupy-ing buildings would be considered extremists and that force would be

used against them if necessary. He also claimed demonstrators had seized two policemen and tortured

them before letting them go, which the opposition denied and called a ruse to justify a crackdown.

MUMBAI, India — In her first public ap-pearance since the French president broke up with her, Valerie Trierweiler turned her atten-tion to the less fortunate Monday, cuddling and kissing children in a pediatric ward in India.

Trierweiler arrived in Mumbai overnight, smiling but looking tired after a business-class flight from Paris, on which cabin crew limited reporters’ access to her. Trierweiler has been a subject of intense media interest after being hospitalized earlier this month with what aides described as shock and the blues following a tabloid’s publication of photos it said proved Hollande was having an affair with an actress.

On Saturday, the French president an-nounced their seven-year relationship was over. On Monday, Trierweiler visited the children in the pediatric ward of a public hospital in Mumbai and spoke with mothers about nutrition.

“I cannot stand that these children have less chances than others,” said Trierweiler, a career journalist who has three children from a previ-ous marriage. “We should give same chances to all. We have (here) children who suffer from

malnutrition, that is why I am here today.”The statement marked Trierweiler’s first

public comments since the scandal erupted. She did not discuss her relationship with Hollande, and canceled a planned visit to a Mumbai slum, though she maintained plans for a gala dinner Monday night in conjunction with aid group Action Against Hunger.

The long-planned trip to India has provided the former first lady with a convenient escape from the Parisian chattering classes, an op-portunity to establish her independence and quash criticism that she may try to cling to the trappings of power even though she and the president never married. After the hospital visit, Trierweiler posted a photograph of a mother and child in a message on her Twitter account that read: “Alongside ACF (Action Against Hunger) in India to fight malnutrition. A child dies of hunger every 30 seconds.”

She also posted a message thanking the staff of the French presidential palace for their “devotion.” Trierweiler’s chief of staff, Patrice Biancone, told The Associated Press that her office as first lady would be formally eliminated Wednesday. “These last few days have been difficult. But today, she is serene,” he said on Sunday.

KIEV, Ukraine — Ukraine’s justice minister is threatening to call for a state of emergency unless protesters leave her ministry building, which they occupied during the night. The seizure of the building early Monday underlined how anti-government demonstrators are increas-ingly willing to take dramatic action as they push for the president’s resignation and other concessions. Protesters now occupy four sizable buildings in downtown Kiev, including the city hall.

TOKYO - Moody’s cut its credit rat-ing on Sony to junk on Monday, saying the Japanese electronics giant had more work to do in repairing its battered bal-ance sheet.

The international ratings agency lowered its view of the company to Ba1 from Baa3, meaning its debt is now seen as below investment grade, a move that threatens to push up Sony’s borrowing costs.

“While Sony has made progress in its restructuring and benefits from continued profitability in several of its business segments, it still faces challenges to improve and stabilise its overall profitability,” Moody’s said in a statement.

“Of primary concern are the challenges facing the company’s TV and PC busi-nesses, both of which face intense global competition, rapid changes in technology, and product obsolescence.”

The move comes less than three months after Sony slashed its full-year profit outlook by 40 percent, dealing a blow to a much-vaunted turnaround plan, as it pointed to tepid demand for its digital cameras, personal computers and televisions.

It also pointed to a weaker-than-expected performance in its film business because of box office flops such as “White House Down” and “After Earth”.

The maker of Bravia televisions and PlayStation games consoles cut its full-year profit outlook to 30 billion yen from 50 billion yen.

Monday’s downgrade was the latest to hit Japan’s embattled electronics industry which has continued to lose ground to overseas rivals even as a weak yen helped boost profitability.

The sector, including Sony rivals Pa-nasonic and Sharp, has been undergoing painful restructuring to stem years of huge losses as it struggles to keep up in the low-margin television business.

Apple and South Korea’s Samsung surged ahead of their Japanese rivals in the lucrative smartphone sector, although Sony has done better than its domestic rivals with its Xperia offering.

Sony chief Kazuo Hirai has shrugged off pleas to abandon the television unit, while the firm has also turned down a call from US hedge fund boss Daniel Loeb to spin off 20 percent of its entertainment arm, which includes the Hollywood film studio, to boost profits.

The shortfall of 11.47 trillion yen marked the biggest deficit since comparable data started in 1979, according to the finance ministry, with the December figure alone doubling from a year earlier.

Exports rose 9.5 percent to 69.79 trillion yen last year, their first increase in three years but that was offset by a 15 percent jump in imports to their highest-ever level of 81.26 trillion yen. Imports of fossil fuels have surged to plug an energy gap since the 2011 Fukushima crisis forced the shutdown of nuclear reactors that once supplied a third of the nation’s power.

At the same time the yen has lost about a quarter of its value against the dollar since late 2012 owing to a policy blitz by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe that meshes govern-ment spending with massive central bank monetary easing.

But while the weaker yen has boosted the

bottom line at exporters such as Sony and Toyota, most have not slashed overseas prices to boost demand.

“Import volumes are also rising slightly faster than export volumes,” London-based Capital Economics said after the annual data were published.

“There are no signs that the weak yen is raising the competitiveness of Japanese exports,” it added, with the country’s share of global exports little changed despite the yen’s plunge against the dollar.

“A major reason is that exporters have been reluctant to lower export prices,” Capital Economics said.

Shipments to China rose 9.7 percent as demand recovered following a consumer boycott on Japanese brands that was linked to a Tokyo-Beijing diplomatic row. Exports to the key US and European markets also im-proved. Deficits to ‘continue for some time’

Taro Saito, senior economist at NLI Re-search Institute, said he expected Japan’s trade deficit to “continue for quite some time”.

When the yen was trading around 80 to the dollar in recent years, many firms shifted production away from Japan to cheaper bases overseas, a move that has offset the benefits of a now-cheap yen for exporters, Saito said. The unit has weakened to more than 100 against the greenback, well down from the mid-70 levels in late 2012.

“It is getting difficult for Japan to boost exports because companies have shifted a lot of their production to foreign countries,” Saito added.

“So, the equation of a cheaper yen equal-ling a rise in exports in not very true any-more.” Japan has seen a mixed bag of data recently, but the government’s efforts to boost the economy appear to be taking hold.

Growth in the first half of 2013 outstripped other G7 nations, although that pace slowed in the third quarter, while November inflation data suggested the Bank of Japan was getting closer to its goal of 2.0 percent sustained inflation in two years.

SEMARAPURA - Electricity service on the three islands of Nusa Penida subdistrict, Klungkung, is under fire from various groups. Aside from ordinary people, the tourism actors are also made an-gry. On account of frequent power outages, the alternate blackout is then applied. Even, a total black-out has ever been implemented all day, so the life of community and service extended to visitors is then disrupted.

This issue emerged when all tourism players in Nusa Penida met with the Regent of Klungkung, the Head of Licensing and Integrated Service Office, Head of Tourism and Culture Agency and the Sub-district Head of Nusa Penida in the meeting hall of Jungut Batu custom-ary village, Saturday (Jan 25). One of the tourism players at Jungut Batu, Nyoman Yastika, said his party was deeply disrupted by the electricity service in recent weeks. As a result, the tourism service was disrupted due to such frequent PLN power outage. Even, there was a business totally ceasing as a total power outage occurred all day.

Yastika also accused the PLN of being unprofessional in provid-ing services for customers. “When having known the power capacity of 2 MW only, the service on of-fer even exceeds the capacity and continues to increase the number of subscribers. Now, it is natural if the power outage occurred so often like this. It is said the blackout only lasted until January 22. But in fact, the blackout remains to happen,” he criticized.

This former headman of Jungut

Batu becoming the legislative can-didate of the PDI-P for the County House originating in the electoral district of Nusa Penida asked the PLN to immediately make improve-ment and provide services profes-sionally because the community of Nusa Penida in general was very much disrupted. Separately, simi-lar complaint was also delivered by another entrepreneur Made Gede Sukabawa. The owner of the Twilight Lembongan at Ceningan

Kawan hamlet urged the PLN to immediately improve the quality of its electricity service.

“If this power outage persists like this, no tourism businesses can run. Besides, many guests will also complain,” he said.

Previously, the PLN (Persero) for East Bali Distribution Area had issued an appeal to the public of Nusa Penida through a circular Number:0021/150/A.Batur/2014 dated January 15, 2014. It was an-

nounced there would be an electri-cal system disruption to the 1 MW power plant of Nusa Penida having a total power capacity of 3.5 MW. Due to such condition, the system went through a deficit of 800 KW at night while during the day it could run normally. Schedule on the alter-nate blackout was made on January 14-22, 2014. The alternate blackout was divided into three blocks, in-cluding the Tanglad Block (Load Break Switch—LBS Batumadeg

and LBS Waru), Karangsari Block (LBS Batumulapan) and Lembon-gan Island Block (LBS Ped).

Meanwhile, specifically for customers at Jungutbatu and Lem-bongan, a total blackout took place until January 22 or even until the electrical system in Nusa Penida could be back to normal. Against these conditions, the PT PLN in its letter promised to do its best in resolving the problems as soon as possible. (kmb31)

One of the actions made by the immigration officer was by deport-ing each foreigner and putting for-ward the immigration officers to the general criminal if the officers had committed a criminal act.

According to the Head of the Bali Regional Office of the Min-istry of Justice and Human Rights, I Gusti Kompiang Adnyana, said on Sunday (Jan 26) that during the

year 2013 the Bali Immigration Office had deported 140 foreign-ers. “In addition to deporting 140 foreigners, this January there are six foreigners remaining under the process of deportation,” he said accompanied by T. Sabaru, Divi-sion Head of Immigration for Bali Regional Office. Further, he said the issues of the 140 foreigners and 6 others being processed involved

in many cases. Other than getting involved in criminal act, some also infringed the administrative rules including residence permit.

“We cannot elaborate the cases one by one. Obviously, some get involved in legal cases, while oth-ers related to violation of residence permit,” said Kompiang Adnyana. Meanwhile, the foreigners directly coming to Bali from overseas reached 3,193,445 people. Such amount was slightly more than the foreigners coming out of Bali which reached 3,055,572 people. On that account, the foreigners living in Bali pursuant to the record of the Bali Immigration Office amounted to 12,419 people. The data included some foreigners extended their

permit such as the Visa on Arrival, extension of visit residence permit, extension of temporary residence permit and extension of the perma-nent residence permit.

“The number of arrival poses the direct coming of foreigners to Bali. Sometimes foreigners arrived through the Soekarno-Hatta Airport or any other. It does not include the direct data,” said Kompiang Adnyana after the rally in the com-memoration of the 64th Immigra-tion Service Day last Sunday morn-ing. The Head of Bali Regional Office for the Ministry of Law and Human Rights Kompiang Adnyana invited the staff and employees in his office not to be satisfied on the outcomes attained so far.

However, he invited them to make innovation in improving the immigration service, chiefly for foreigners in accordance with the demands of time and improve the service to the public that increas-ingly critical to government policy, especially regarding the immigra-tion as one of the agencies directly getting in touch with the community at large.

“And the change to get a better service we have done in what the so-called Immigration on Board from Tokyo to Bali, Narita to Bali and Sydney to Bali. Besides, there are also services on shipping for any cruise ship arriving at the Harbor of Benoa, Singaraja, Padang Bai and Tanah Ampo,” he said. (kmb)

It wasn’t clear what exactly Snowden accused the NSA of doing with such information — he only said he didn’t want to reveal the details before journalists did.

Snowden also told ARD television that he was no longer in possession of any NSA documents, because he had passed them all on to a few selected journalists and that he had no further

influence on the release of the files. He also said U.S. government

representatives wanted to kill him, according to a simultaneous German translation by the station. Snowden referred to an article he had read on Buzzfeed in which U.S. government representatives had told a reporter that they wanted to kill him.

Snowden, wearing a white shirt

and black jacket, also chatted about his childhood and said he’d always been fascinated by computers and was one of those kids whose parents would tell him late at night to finally turn it off. Hubert Seipel, the reporter who talked to Snowden, said he first met him in Moscow at the end of De-cember and conducted the interview on Thursday.

TOKYO - The head of Japan’s public broadcaster expressed regret on Monday for his comments on the use of military brothels in World War Two, news reports said, as Asian countries voiced fresh outrage about a highly sensitive point in relations with Tokyo. Apparently trying to snuff out further controversy over Japan’s view of its wartime role, new NHK chief Katsuto Momii told local media his comments had been “extremely inappropriate”.

Addressing a news conference on Saturday on the issue of “comfort women,” a euphemism for Korean and other women forced to work in military brothels, Momii said such things occurred at the time in all countries at war. He acknowledged, however, that the practice was bad “by today’s morals”. Political parties in South Korea, the country most indignant about the wartime practice, demanded Momii’s resignation, suggesting his remarks risked becoming a fresh diplomatic headache for Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

China’s foreign ministry restated its frequent calls for Japan to adopt a “responsible” view of its wartime history. Tokyo already has strained relations with Seoul and Beijing rooted in disputes over remote islands and lingering memories of Japanese aggression before and during the war.

Momii, a former vice president at one of Japan’s largest trading houses, reiterated on Monday that his weekend comments on the “comfort women” amounted to his personal view. “Even as a personal opinion I shouldn’t have said it. It was extremely inappropriate,” he said according to the Mainichi Shimbun daily. “I had never been (speaking) in such a place before, it is my fault for not grasping the rules.”

An NHK official said the broadcaster could not confirm Momii’s latest remarks. It had no plans to issue a statement.

VISIT TO CONTROVERSIAL SHRINEAbe, who visited a controversial shrine last month that honours war

criminals along with millions of war dead, is also battling an international image as a right-wing nationalist who wants to revise Japanese history to have a less apologetic tone. On Saturday, Momii said South Korea’s state-ments that Japan had been alone in forcing women to work in such brothels were “complicated”.

He also said it was “only natural” for NHK to voice the Japanese govern-ment’s position in international broadcasts on such matters as the dispute with China over uninhabited islets in the East China Sea.

But NHK, he said, would make editorial decisions in line with Japan’s broadcast law, which calls for the publicly funded broadcaster to maintain political neutrality.

In Seoul, Yonhap news agency said President Park Geun-hye told ethnic Koreans from Japan that she hoped “Japanese politicians will get back on the right path as early as possible”.

CHICAGO — Another winter day, another below-zero high temperature for many parts of the Midwest — at least, it seems that way. The deep chill has returned, bringing with it wind chills ranging from the negative teens to 40s, school cancellations and sighs of resignation from residents who are weary of bundling up.

A persistent weather pattern that’s driving Arctic air south will drop temperatures for about 2½ days, starting overnight Sunday. Actual temperatures will range from the teens in northern Kentucky to double-digits below zero in Minnesota, but wind chills will be even colder — minus 43 in Minneapolis, minus 23 in Chicago, minus 18 in Dayton, Ohio, minus 14 in Kansas City, Mo., and minus 3 in

Louisville, Ky.“I’m sick of it,” Chicago resident

Matt Ryan, 19, said Sunday on his way to his family’s home in the suburb of Oak Park. “I came home to steal a scarf from my parents,” he said. Ryan’s plan for Monday, when the high is forecast to be a mere minus 4 degrees and the wind chills could dip to 40 below: Dress in layers, carry hand warmers and wear long underwear.

National Weather Service Meteo-rologist Scott Blair stopped short of calling the latest round of cold part of the polar vortex, a system of winds that circulate around the North Pole.

“There’s really nothing abnormal about the air that’s coming into the area,” he said. “It’s just been a very persistent pattern” of cold air. Blair said it’s an amplified pattern of the jet stream, with cold air filtering in

behind a large trough of low pressure. Simplifying, he explained: “Troughs are typically associated with unstable or unsettled weather, and, at this time of the year, much colder air.”

Frigid temperatures are expected to hold into Tuesday. If Chicago makes it to 60 hours below zero, it will be the longest stretch since 1983 — when it was below zero for 98 hours — and the third longest in 80 years.

Chicago Public Schools called off Monday’s classes for its nearly 400,000 students, as did suburban districts. Earlier this month, when it was below zero for 36 straight hours, CPS closed for two days.

About 90 miles north of Chicago, Ray Fournelle lamented the weather’s ability to keep him from his normal routine of jogging 4 miles a couple of times a week.

“We are still studying some cases, but the trend of suspicious transactions has been increasing during the past one year and, will probably continue next year,” PPATK’s Chairman M Yusuf stated here on Monday.

Though he could not reveal the details of any particular case yet, Yusuf noted that suspicious transactions could happen. For example, if a member of a politi-cal party with a monthly salary of Rp10 million received bank transactions of Rp500 million and above, this would be considered suspicious activity.

Another example is when a member of a political party is

found to be using the US Dol-lar currency for banking trans-actions, and when transaction timelines drastically change from being just once a month to once a week.

On April 9, Indonesia will hold the general election to decide the new parliament members, while the presidential elections will be held on July 9.

cation Commission (KPK) questioned Deputy Chief of the Financial Trans-action Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK) Agus Santoso, on Monday, in an alleged graft case related to short-term assistance to Bank Century.

“Let’s wait until I come out,” Agus remarked when he arrived at the KPK building.

Agus was questioned in his capac-ity as former deputy director of the strategic planning and public rela-tions department at Bank Indonesia. He was a witness in the case against former Bank Indonesia deputy for foreign exchange management Budi Mulya who has been held in the KPK detention center since November 15 last year.

Also, the KPK will question Bank Indonesia’s former director of legal affairs Ahmad Fuad, deputy governor Halim Alamsyah, and employees Rudiatin S Djadmiko, Doddy Budi Waluyo, Eddy Sulaiman Yusuf and Rusli Simanjuntak, on Monday, in the same case.

According to the State Audit Board (BPK), the granting of short-term as-sistance (FPJP) facility to Bank Cen-tury had resulted in a loss of Rp689.3

billion and the status of the bank was listed as “failed”, which in turn brought about systemic effects caus-ing the state a loss of Rp6.76 trillion. Overall, the state had suffered a loss of Rp7.4 trillion from the case.

Budi Mulya has been charged with abuse of authority based on article 3 of Law No. 31/1999 on corruption eradication.

Besides Budi Mulya, another BI executive, considered accountable for extending the loan, is Siti Chodijah Fajriah, but investigations have been hampered because she is too ill to undergo a legal trial.

Bank Century received a bailout of Rp6.7 trillion during the financial crisis of 2008, despite failing to fulfill the capital adequacy ratio (CAR) of 8 percent. The bank’s CAR was only 2.02 percent.

According to the BPK, Bank Indo-nesia did not take strict action against the bank. Instead, it modified its own regulations to allow the bank to receive the loan.

The Rp6.7 trillion in funds were disbursed in stages, with Rp 2.7 tril-lion on November 23, 2008, Rp2.2 trillion on December 5, 2008, Rp1.1 trillion on February 3, 2009 and Rp630 billion on July 24 , 2009.

Miami’s LeBron James added 18 points as the Heat got by comfort-ably without much from Dwyane Wade, who was used as a reserve for the first time in six years.. He had missed the previous four games due to ongoing knee problems. Tim Duncan led San Antonio with 23 points as the Spurs missed a chance to draw within half a game of idle West leader Oklahoma City.

Golden State’s Stephen Curry had 38 points, eight assists and seven rebounds to lead the Warriors to a 103-88 victory over Portland. The newly elected All-Star starting point guard shot 13 of 23 from the

floor to carry the offensive load. The Warriors built a 22-point lead midway through the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.

Golden State outshot Portland 41.8 percent to 33.7 percent and forced 15 turnovers while committing nine. Wesley Matthews scored 21 for the Blazers, who were held to season lows in points and shooting percent-age and it tied their largest losing margin. Dallas Dirk Nowitzki scored 28 points to guide the Mavericks to a 116-106 home win over Detroit.

Nowitzki was 10 of 16 from the field in his second straight game wearing a sleeve on his sore left

knee after sitting out a loss in To-ronto. It’s not the knee that required surgery and sidelined him the first 27 games last season.

Devin Harris scored a season-high 14 points, including five straight in the final minute of the third quarter to break a 79-79. His 3-pointer early in the fourth capped a 15-2 run that put Dallas in control. Brandon Jennings had 26 points and seven assists to lead the Pistons, who lost their fourth straight.

Phoenix’s Markieff Mor-ris scored 27 points as the Suns stormed over the top of Cleveland and won 99-90.

MELBOURNE - Winning the Australian Open was bitter-sweet for Stanislas Wawrinka, whose delight at stepping out of Roger Federer’s shadow with his first grand slam title was tempered by the knowledge that his opponent Rafa Nadal was hampered by injury. The 28-year-old Swiss overcame top seed Nadal 6-3 6-2 3-6 6-3 at Rod Laver Arena on Sunday, having survived a crippling bout of nerves sparked by the ailing Spaniard’s dogged fightback in the third set.

“It’s quite crazy what’s hap-pening right now,” the Swiss told reporters. “I never expect to win a grand slam. “I never dreamt about that because for me, I was not good enough to beat those guys.

“I still think that I’m dream-ing. It’s a strange feeling. I saw so many finals. I always try to watch the final of grand slams because that’s where the best players are playing. “To beat Rafa today, even if he was injured, I think I played my best first set during the match; I was ready to play four hours or five to beat Novak (Djokovic) in the quarters, to beat (Tomas) Berdych in the semis.

“That shows me I’m doing the right thing since many years.

That if you practise well, if you work hard, you will always have a chance to be in a great position to play your best tennis.”

Having never taken a set in 12 previous encounters against the world number one, Wawrinka took the first at a canter in a brilliant display of clean hitting and broke Nadal to lead 2-0 in the second before the Spaniard’s back problem flared. Playing against a hobbled opponent, Wawrinka closed out the second set with ease but was left reel-ing as Nadal dug deep from his reservoir of grit to hold serve and break him.

The winners dried up to be replaced by nervous shanks, the momentum change completely throwing the Swiss. “The prob-lem is I didn’t play well because I was waiting for him to miss, and that was a big mistake from myself,” Wawrinka said.

“Because I was nervous, I was like, ‘okay, miss, miss, make a mistake, because I’m not going to win the match because I’m nervous; I start to realise that I can win the grand slam.”

Wawrinka galvanised himself between the third and fourth sets and though wobbling to hand back a break of serve, served out the match strongly, sealing it with an imperious forehand winner.

MIAMI — Miami rolled to a surprisingly comfortable 113-101 win over San Antonio on Sunday in a reprise of last year’s NBA Finals, with Chris Bosh scoring 24 points on 9-for-10 shooting for the Heat. Among the day’s other games, Golden State beat Portland to drop the Trail Blazers two games off the Western Conference lead, Dirk Nowitzki led Dallas past Detroit, and Phoenix recovered from a big half-time deficit to overrun Cleveland.

The joint leaders have 54 points from 21 matches, with Barca ahead on goal difference. Real are lurking ominously on 53 and Athletic Bilbao trail on 42 in fourth after they thrashed Osasuna 5-1 on Sunday. The Barca fans paid tribute to veteran midfielder Xavi before kickoff at the Nou Camp after he reached the milestone of 700 official games for the Spanish champions this month.

The Spain playmaker turned in a typically impeccable per-formance controlling play in the centre and Malaga were forced to rely on the counter-attack to have any hope of troubling the hosts. Barca’s Chile forward Alexis Sanchez clipped the post in the fifth minute and Lionel Messi sent a dinked effort narrowly wide in the 22nd before Gerard Pique fired in the opener five minutes before halftime.

The Spain centre back, who scored the equaliser in last week-end’s 1-1 draw at Levante, con-trolled the ball in the area from a Xavi corner and drilled it past Malaga goalkeeper Willy Cabal-lero. Pique headed against a post from another corner in the 54th minute and moments later Messi freed Pedro on the left of the area and the striker curled a shot into the corner.

Pedro turned provider just

after the hour when he picked up another Messi pass and sent a low centre to the far post where Alexis tapped home. An easy win, their 25th in a row at home in La Liga, was just the tonic Barca needed after a difficult week when president Sandro Rosell stepped down amid a probe into alleged irregularities in the signing of Brazil forward Neymar last year.

Rosell’s deputy Josep Bar-tomeu has taken charge and was watching from the VIP tribune. Pique said the club’s institutional problems were unlikely to have much effect on the players. “We will carry on competing as we have done these past years,” he told Spanish television broad-caster Canal Plus.

“Obviously a change in presi-dent is a subject of discussion among the general public but on the pitch we are professionals and we will try to win all the titles we can,” he added. There was more positive news for Barca as their Netherlands midfielder Ibrahim Afellay came off the bench for the last five minutes of the game.

Afellay was declared fit this week after battling a series of in-juries over the past two years and will give coach Gerardo Martino an extra option as Barca seek to defend their Liga title and chase

Champions League and King’s Cup glory.

TURKISH MAGICIANSpain’s record scorer David Villa,

who joined Atletico from Barca in the close season, set his new club on their way in the eighth minute at Rayo’s Vallecas stadium in the Madrid suburbs when he struck a first-time shot high into the net from Diego Costa’s neat layoff. Atletico goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois saved a 12th-minute Jonathan Viera penalty before Arda Turan, known in Spain as the Turkish magician, made it 2-0 on the half hour after more good work from Costa.

The Brazil-born forward fed Jose Sosa and despite having a clear shooting opportunity he unselfishly squared for Arda to finish into an empty net. Rayo, who play some attractive football but have a leaky defence, pulled a goal back in the 40th minute when Viera finished off a sweeping move and Arda scored his second moments before the break.

The stocky and heavily-bearded midfielder nipped in at the back post and volleyed a deflected Gabi free kick in from a tight angle. Costa, the second-highest scorer in La Liga this season behind Cris-tiano Ronaldo, appeared to have netted his 20th of the campaign in the 75th minute but it was ruled an own goal and attributed to Rayo midfielder Saul Niguez.

Joaquin Larrivey nodded a second for Rayo a minute later and Atletico had to withstand late pressure but Courtois capped another fine perfor-mance with a couple of impressive

saves. Barca, Atletico and Real are all in King’s Cup action this week when they will seek to capi-talise on first-leg leads to secure a place in the semi-finals.

SAO PAULO — Ask a Bra-zilian how their national team will fare at the World Cup and chances are they will predict a run at least to the July 13 final, if not a win. Understandable optimism, given that Brazil will be playing at home and has won more World Cups (five) than any other football power.

But what if the host nation is booted out early? Very possible with defending champion Spain or 2010 runner-up the Netherlands looming for Brazil in the first knockout game and a tough path beyond that. Are Brazilians good losers? Would they sour the tour-nament mood in defeat? Or swal-low their disappointment with a few morale-boosting caipirinha cocktails, crank up the samba and party on?

Like a kid who picks his scabs, Brazil has never allowed the wound of its last World Cup loss at home to fully heal. That was way back in 1950, before most Brazilians alive today were born. But the national pain of Brazil 1, Uruguay 2 has been handed down from one generation to the next like an heirloom. Seemingly everyone knows about the stunned silence of 173,000 people who packed the Maracana Stadium

expecting to see Brazil lift the trophy, how fans wept and never forgave goalkeeper Moacir Bar-bosa for letting Alcides Ghiggia score Uruguay’s winner past his left-hand post.

“We carry this trauma. It’s really a trauma,” Deputy Sports Minister Luis Fernandes said in an interview with a small group of reporters, including The Associ-ated Press. “Probably around 90 percent of the Brazilian popula-tion wasn’t born in 1950 and we still carry this trauma. I wasn’t born in 1950 and this trauma, I’ve been socialized, brought up in terms of this trauma.”

A kid of six in 1950, former player Barcimio Sicupira recalled how “my dad punched the radio and broke it in half” after Ghiggia scored in the 79th minute. Rubens Minelli, who became a national championship-winning coach, was playing an amateur tourna-ment that July 16 afternoon, his attention focused not on his game but on the unfolding drama being broadcast by radio from Rio de Janeiro. “Everybody was sad, they couldn’t believe what happened,” he said in an interview. “It was a national disgrace.”

For a sporting mega-event like the World Cup to become truly memorable, host nation success can be vital. Jessica Ennis, Greg

Rutherford and Mo Farah put the wow into the 2012 London Games when they all won gold for Britain on “Super Saturday” at the Olympic Stadium. Australian Cathy Freeman did the same for the Sydney Olympics in winning the 400 meters. If Brazil triumphs in July, one imagines the nation of carnival will treat the World Cup to street parties even more epic and delirious than when France became the last host to win in 1998. The ghost of 1950 would be exorcised.

And if that doesn’t happen? Ron DelMont, managing director of FIFA’s office in Brazil, believes Brazilians are too enamored with football to turn their backs on the World Cup should their team tumble out early.

“We expect that Brazil will make it to the final. But let’s just say that it doesn’t happen. Every indication that we’ve had so far about the tournament in Brazil is that it will be a celebration of football, irrespective,” he said.

“There will be still a lot of enthusiasm about what happens, whoever the eventual winner will be. Brazil, because of the culture and the love that it has for foot-ball, is going to defy all the other previous host cities ... It will still be a celebration all the way to the end.”

ROME — Ivory Coast forward Gervinho set up one goal and scored another as Roma moved within six points of Serie A leader Juventus with a 3-1 victory at Hellas Verona on Sunday. Gervinho provided the cross for Adem Ljajic’s goal in the 45th minute then scored himself on the hour mark after Iceland international Emil Hallfredsson had equal-ized in the 49th.

Roma’s 37-year-old captain Francesco Totti added a penalty in the 82nd. “Winning 3-1 away against a Verona squad that is having a solid season is a good result,” Roma coach Rudi Garcia said. “Especially after the draws by Juve and Napoli.” Gianluigi Buffon was sent off and Juventus was held to a 1-1 draw at Lazio on Saturday, ending the two-time defending champion’s 12-match winning streak.

Also on Saturday, Napoli drew 1-1 at home with Chievo Verona. Elsewhere Sunday, AC Milan came back with two late goals for a 2-1 win at Cagliari and Inter Milan was whistled off the San Siro pitch after being held to a 0-0 draw by Catania.

Inter remained fifth. Milan, which recently replaced Massimiliano Allegri with Clarence Seedorf as manager, moved up to a tie for ninth with Lazio. After Marco Sau had put Cagliari ahead in the 28th, Mario Balotelli equalized with a free kick in the 87th and substitute Giampaolo Pazzini scored the winner with a header in the 89th.

“This was a very important goal for me and for the squad,” said Pazzini, who has been slowed by injuries for most of the last year. “We are a squad that can do much better. Seedorf is definitely someone with a lot of experience and charisma and he transmits a lot of serenity.”

In the late match, Alberto Aquilani scored a hat trick for fourth-place Fiorentina in a 3-3 draw with Genoa. Alberto Gilardino, Luca Antonini and Sebastian De Maio got the goals for Genoa. In other matches, it was: Livorno 3, Sassuolo 1; Parma 1, Udinese 0; Sampdoria 1, Bologna 1; and Torino 1, Atalanta 0.

PARIS — Monaco moved to within three points of French league leader Paris Saint-Ger-main after beating a dispirited Marseille team 2-0 on Sunday. Monaco also showed it can cope without injured star striker Radamel Falcao as forwards Valere Germain, making only his second start of the season, and Emmanuel Riviere scored a goal each to punish some poor Marseille defending.

The Monaco players all wore T-shirts with “Fuerza Tigre” (“Be Strong, Tiger” referring to

his nickname “El Tigre”) writ-ten on them as a show of sup-port for Falcao. The Colombia striker underwent surgery on Saturday after tearing his left knee ligaments in the French Cup in midweek. “It’s a good win for us. I managed to score and so did Valere, and I’m very pleased for him,” Riviere said. “Even without Falcao we have good players, but I would like to dedicate this win to him. We’re all right behind him, he’s a very important player.”

Earlier, Alexandre Lacazette took his league tally to 12 as Lyon beat 10-man Evian 3-0 to

extend its unbeaten run to 12 matches and move up to fifth. Also, Bordeaux beat fourth-place Saint-Etienne 2-0.

Monaco hosts PSG on Feb. 9 and can put the pressure on PSG with a win. “Everything is possible,” Riviere said. “We still have to play Paris at home and that will be decisive.”

Marseille’s problems con-tinue, however, with the team languishing in ninth place and out of all Cup competitions following a 5-4 defeat to Nice in the French Cup in midweek. At the final whistle, striker Andre-Pierre Gignac held his

head in his hands as he lay on the ground. “The team is really doubting at the moment,” coach Jose Anigo said. “They’re good players but they have to believe it themselves.”

Riviere almost scored in the first minute when he ran onto a cross from the right and forced goalkeeper Steve Mandanda into a superb one-handed save. Monaco found it easy to get behind Marseille’s shaky defense, and right back Andrea Raggi placed his shot too close to Mandanda in the 20th.

A minute later, Marseille

center half Souleymane Diawara got the ball stuck under his foot and Riviere stole possession before sprinting towards goal, only to drag his shot wide.

Germain gave Monaco the lead with an expertly-taken goal in the 41st minute, cutting past Diawara before curling the ball past Mandanda and into the bot-tom right corner.

“It’s been a while since I last played and I try to give everything for this club,” said Germain, who came through the club’s youth system. “It feels really good to play after six dif-ficult months.”

Up till now only one politi-cal party, People`s Conscience Party (Hanura), has nominated a presidential candidate, the retired military general Wiranto. Other parties such as Golkar, Democrat and PDIP have not yet announced their presidential candidates.

AntaraJAKARTA - The Corruption Eradi-

cation Commission (KPK) questioned Deputy Chief of the Financial Trans-action Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK) Agus Santoso, on Monday, in an alleged graft case related to short-term assistance to Bank Century.

(kmb)

(kmb31)

Bali Post

SEMArAPUrA - Klungkung Transportation, Communication and Informatics Agency plans to add one hundred passenger seats in the Nusa Jaya Abadi roro vessel. In addition, it is also meant to anticipate the surge in passengers to Nusa Penida and vice versa during holidays.

‘Ride Along’ runs over ‘I, Frankenstein’Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK — The Kevin Hart comedy “Ride Along” continued to speed through a typically quiet box-office frame, while the monster thriller “I, Frankenstein” couldn’t be roused from the dead. Universal’s buddy cop comedy “Ride Along,” co-starring Ice Cube, cruised to the top of the box office again, taking in $21.2 million in its second weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday. The film last week set a January debut record, with $48.6 million over the three-day holiday weekend.

The two living members of the Fab Four were in attendance to re-ceive an award for lifetime achieve-ment for the Liverpool band, widely considered among the most influen-tial acts in music history.

As Starr took the stage to join McCartney on his song “Queenie Eye,” Ono -- widow of the late John Lennon -- swayed back and forth in the crowd in her trademark dark shades and black hat.

Their son Sean Lennon, who bears a striking resemblance to his slain father with his glasses and unkempt hair, danced respectfully next to his mother. Olivia Harrison, the widow of fellow late Beatle George Harri-son, and the wives of McCartney and Starr were also in attendance at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Starr, sporting a red-and-black polka dot shirt, also separately per-formed the song “Photograph.”

Ono and Harrison later took the stage to present the Grammy for album of the year, which went to French electro duo Daft Punk for “Random Access Memories.”

Joining in presenting the award, singer Alicia Keys noted that past Grammys for best album went in 1973 to George Harrison’s “The Concert for Bangladesh,” which raised funds for the war-torn new country, and to John Lennon and Yoko Ono for “Double Fantasy,” released just before Lennon’s mur-der in 1980.

beats veterans Meanwhile, New Zealand teen-

ager Lorde on Sunday upset music veterans to win two Grammys with her chart-topping song “Royals.”

Lorde, 17, took home awards for song of the year and best solo pop performance at the music industry’s biggest night in Los Angeles.

“Thank you everyone who has let this song explode. Because it’s been mental,” she said as she ac-cepted the song of the year award with co-writer Joel Little.

Lorde earlier thanked her com-petitors including Justin Timber-lake and Katy Perry who were in the running for best solo pop performance.

“This is the one thing that I did

not expect the most about tonight,” Lorde said, saying of her rivals for the Grammy: “I have been so inspired by all of your vocal work at some point in my life, so thank you.”

Lorde, whose real name is Ella Yelich-O’Connor, stormed through international charts last year with “Royals,” her genre-defying tale of aspirational luxury.

With the song, Lorde became the first act from New Zealand to top the Billboard chart in the United States.

Lorde was also nominated for Grammys for best record and best pop vocal album.
