Denpasar (Bali Post) —Bali is now under a spotlight of officials

from the National Narcotics Agency(BNN).

They are now having a thorough searchin Bali based on a suspicion of the pres-ence of a high class drug dealer doing hisbusiness in this area. The information cir-culated; there are indications

that the Island of a Thousand Temples ishaving a dealer which is syndicated inter-nationally. Allegation was corroborated bythe aborted smuggling of drugs from abroadin several times.

‘’There are some targets that are huntedby the BNN members here. Currently, theywill continue to investigate,’’ said the Headof Drugs Division of Denpasar’s PoliceHeadquearter, Kompol Nyoman Sukasena, accompanied by its Public Relation Officer,Kompol Made Mundra, on Friday (22 / 1).

It is stated that his department has se-cured a car spare part seller on JalanWahidin, West Denpasar, whose initial wasSE (42). This guy immediately became thetarget of operations (TO) of National Nar-cotics Agency (BNN),’’ he said.

SE was arrested later on Thursday (21 /1) at his house in Jalan Gunung TangkubanPerahu, Denpasar. BNN troops raided thehouse around

9:00 p.m. Without resistance, the carspare part seller was successfully arrested. When the police conduct a search, theyfound evidence of

fake “Ineks” (a type of narcotics) andclipped plastic bags. In addition, there werealso scales found.

In addition to securing false “Ineks”, thepolice managed to find the original type ofpsychotropic MDMA (similar to “Ineks” inpowder form) weighing

0.29 grams. ‘’We’ve brought that evi-dence to Denpasar and Lab to be provenpositive that it was the kind of “Ineks”MDMA in powder form,’’ said Sukasena.

When the BNN officer handed him toDrugs Division of Denpasar’s PoliceHeadquearter, SE still insisted that he wasnot a drug dealer. But from the evidencethat was found in his house, police believeSE is a dealer.

Surprisingly, in addition to the originaldrug, the suspect also saved counterfeitgoods. Are there indications that MDMAwas mixed with “Ineks” by SE to be able tomultiple the benefit? ‘’I

also wonder, why did the defendant’sstore a large amount of fake “Ineks”? Washe also circulating fake drugs or did he usedthe “ineks” to mix and make counterfeits?’’affirmed Kompol Sukasena. (KMB)

CARACAS, Venezuela – Ven-ezuelan cable television providersstopped transmitting a channel criti-cal of President Hugo Chavez onSunday, after the government citednoncompliance with new regulationsrequiring the socialist leader’sspeeches be televised on cable.

Radio Caracas Television, ananti-Chavez channel known asRCTV that switched to cable andsatellite television in 2007 after thegovernment refused to renew itsover-the-air license, disappearedfrom TV sets shortly after midnight.

RCTV was yanked from cableand satellite programming just hoursafter Diosdado Cabello, director ofVenezuela’s state-run telecommuni-cations agency, said several localchannels carried by cable televisionhave breached broadcasting lawsand should be removed from the air-waves.

Cabello warned cable operationson Saturday evening that they couldfind themselves in jeopardy if theykeep showing those channels.

“They must comply with the law,and they cannot have a single chan-nel that violates Venezuelan laws aspart of their programming,” he said.

Several channels have not shownChavez’s televised speeches whenhe orders all media to air them — arequirement under new regulationsapproved last month by the telecom-munications agency, Cabello said.

RCTV did not broadcast a speechby the president to his political sup-porters during a rally early on Sat-urday. The station’s removal fromcable and satellite televisionprompted a cacophony of protests inCaracas neighborhoods as Chavezopponents leaned out apartmentwindows to bang on pots and pans.Others shouted epithets and driversjoined in, honking car horns.

“They want to silence RCTV’svoice,” said Miguel AngelRodriguez, the channel’s most popu-lar talk show host. “But they won’tbe able to because RCTV is embed-ded in the hearts of all Venezuelans.”

The U.S. Embassy in Caracas ex-pressed concern about the decision.

Byrestricting yet again the Venezuelanpeople’s access to RCTV broadcasts, the Venezuelan government contin-ues to erode this cornerstone,” Em-bassy spokeswoman RobinHolzhauer said. Venezuela’s tele-communications agency has said inthe past week that under new rules, two dozen local cable channels in-cluding RCTV must carry govern-ment programming when officialsdeem the measure necessary, just likechannels on the open airwaves al-ready do. Chavez often uses the mea-sure to force all the country’s TVchannels and radio stations to broad-cast his speeches.

Cabello said Saturday that otherviolations committed by cable chan-nels include failing to warn viewersof sexual and violent content as wellas broadcasting more than two hoursof soap operas during the afternoon, which should be mostly dedicated tochildren programming.

He did not specify which TVchannels have purportedly violatedthe law, but RCTV said it was thetarget. It accused the agency of pres-suring cable providers to drop chan-nels that are critical of the govern-ment. The agency “doesn’t have anyauthority to give the cable serviceproviders this order,” RCTV said ina statement. “The government is in-appropriately pressuring them tomake decisions beyond their respon-sibilities.”

In denying RCTV a renewal ofits over-the-air broadcast license,Chavez accused the station of plot-ting against his government and sup-porting a failed 2002 coup.

In August, Chavez’s governmentforced 32 radio stations and twosmall TV stations off the air, say-ing some owners had failed to re-new their broadcast licenses whileother licenses were no longer validbecause they had been granted longago to owners who are now dead.Officials said they planned to takemore stations off the air. Govern-ment figures say that as of 2008about 37 percent of Venezuelanhomes received cable television.

The North’s military said itwould take prompt and decisivemilitary action against any SouthKorean attempt to violate NorthKorea’s dignity and sovereigntyand would blow up major targetsin the South, including its com-mand center.

“Our revolutionary armedforces will regard the scenario for‘pre-emptive strike,’ which theSouth Korean puppet authoritiesadopted as a ‘state policy,’ as anopen declaration of war,” the Gen-eral Staff of the Korean People’sArmy said in a statement carriedby the country’s official KoreanCentral News Agency.

The North’s warning came inresponse to the South Korean De-fense Minister Kim Tae-young’sremarks last week that the Southshould launch a pre-emptivestrike on North Korea if there wasa clear indication the country waspreparing a nuclear attack.

A South Korean Defense Min-istry spokesman Won Tae-jae dis-missed the North’s statement Sun-day as a predictable reaction.

Kim made similar remarks in2008 when he was chairman ofSouth Korea’s Joint Chiefs ofStaff, prompting North Korea tothreaten South Korea with de-struction.

JOS, Nigeria (AFP) – At least 150bodies were recovered from wells af-ter Muslim-Christian clashes in centralNigeria, a village head said Saturday, taking the unofficial death toll past 450.

“So far we have picked 150 bodiesfrom the wells. But 60 more people arestill missing”, Umar Baza, head of KuruKarama village near the city of Jos, toldAFP by telephone.

“We took an inventory of the dis-placed people from this village, shel-tering in three camps, and we realisethat 60 people can still not be accountedfor,” he said.

Kuru Karama is a Muslim enclavein a Christian region 30 kilometres (18miles) south of Jos.

The head of the Muslim volunteerteam for the victims’ burial,Mohammed Shittu, said: “now we have150 bodies in all, taken from the wellsas from Thursday.”.

At least 364 Muslims died in theclashes, according to figures providedby Muslim leaders, a spokesman forglobal rights watchdog Human RightsWatch (HRW) said Saturday.

“As of yesterday (Friday), at least364 Muslims have died in Jos, includ-ing those found in wells in KuruKarama. This information was pro-vided by Muslim officials in Jos,” theHRW’s Eric Guttschuss told AFP bytelephone from Washington.

“The Christian Association of Ni-geria said that they have not compiledtheir estimates on death toll. Hopefully, they will do that before the weekendruns out,” he said.

But earlier this week a Christianleader, the reverend Chung Dabo, sec-retary of the Christian Association ofNigeria (CAN) in Jos, told AFP that 55Christians had died..

The unofficial death toll is estimatedat 464.

Earlier Saturday in a statement,HRW urged Vice President GoodluckJonathan to order “an immediate crimi-nal investigation into credible reportsof a massacre of at least 150 Muslimresidents” of Kuru Karama.

Dozens of them were “stuffed downwells or in sewage pits,” HRW said inthe statement.

SEOUL, South Korea – North Korea threatened war Sunday after South Korea warned oflaunching a pre-emptive strike if the North was preparing a nuclear attack — the latest salvo in abattle of rhetoric despite signs of improved cooperation across the militarized frontier.

lenge to its own security and theauthoritarian regime leader KimJong Il but that the war of wordswas unlikely to derail attempts toimprove relations.

“The North has sent a clearmessage that it was ready for co-operation with South Korea, but itwon’t tolerate it if South Koreatouches on the prestige of itsleader or its system,” said analystPaik Hak-soon of the privateSejong Institute think tank nearSeoul.

The North’s isolated communistregime has reached out to the U.S.and South Korea in recent monthsin what could be an attempt to easesome of the pressure of U.N. sanc-tions imposed on the North afterit conducted a nuclear test lastyear, its second to date.

North Korea quit internationaltalks on ending its nuclear pro-grams in April last year, but hasindicated its willingness to returnto international disarmament nego-tiations if the sanctions are lifted.

In a sign of the conflicting sig-nals from Pyongyang, the North’smilitary renewed in Sunday’sstatement the country’s commit-ment to improve inter-Korean re-lations.

Koh Yu-hwan, a North Koreaexpert at Seoul’s Dongguk Univer-sity, said the South — led by a con-servative government which hasbeen more cautious in engaging

Pyongyang than preceding moreliberal administrations — wasalso giving mixed signals.

“South Korea appears to havenot decided whether to grab thehand of North Korea’s concilia-tory gestures,” Koh said.

Last week, the two Koreas heldtalks on developing their joint in-dustrial complex in the North’sborder city of Kaesong, the mostprominent symbol of inter-Koreancooperation. On Friday, the Northunexpectedly offered to hold dis-cussions between military officersin Kaesong this Tuesday to dis-cuss border crossings, customs, and the use of mobile phones andthe Internet for South Koreancompanies in the complex.

South Korea plans to accept theNorth’s demand for dialogue butask Pyongyang to set another dateas the two sides had alreadyagreed to meet on Feb. 1 inKaesong to discuss the complex.

“There is no reason to opposethe North’s proposal and we planto reply on Monday,” a South Ko-rean official said. He asked not tobe identified because no officialdecision has been made yet.

More than 110 South Koreanfactories at Kaesong employ some42,000 North Korean workers tomake everything from electronicsand watches to shoes and utensils, providing a major source of rev-enue for the cash-strapped North.

150 bodies recovered from wellsafter Nigerian massacre: official

The state government has given noofficial death toll for the violence, whichbroke out last Sunday in Jos, capital ofPlateau State, and spread to nearbytowns and villages.

Some 18,000 people fled the fight-ing to take refuge in military barracks, churches and mosques around the city, according to the Red Cross, as the gov-ernment called in the army to restoreorder.

An AFP reporter in Jos Saturday sawscores of residents fleeing the city incars and buses.

Religious leaders and medical work-ers said they had counted 288 bodiesby Wednesday, before the dead startedto be recovered from Kuru Karama.Another 26 bodies were found and bur-ied Saturday in a Jos cemetery.

HRW quoted witnesses as sayinggroups of armed men — believed to beChristians — attacked the largely Mus-lim population of Kuru Karama onTuesday morning.

“After surrounding the town, theyhunted down and attacked Muslim resi-dents, some of whom had sought ref-uge in homes and a local mosque, kill-ing many as they tried to flee and burn-ing many others alive,” the statementsaid.

Christian and Muslim leaders in Pla-teau State have both said the unrestowed more to the failure of politicalleaders to address ethnic differencesthan inter-faith rivalries.

Jonathan pledged that the ringlead-ers responsible for the violence wouldbe brought to justice, and ordered thearmy to take over security of the af-fected regions and sensitiveneighbouring areas.

Jos has been a hotbed of religiousviolence in Nigeria, whose 150 millionpeople are divided almost equally be-tween followers of the two faiths.

An estimated 200 people were killedin religious clashes in the city in late2008.

Business was slowly picking up inJos Saturday with more more shopsopening and roadside hawkers display-ing their wares, while long queues ofresidents scrambled for water at publictaps.

Although no military patrols werevisible, checkpoints still remained.

The tools used to serve gets influence from theavailability of oblational containers or the making ofvarious offering and the easy serving of food on dailyoccasion. For example, there are ingke—plate madefrom plaited palm’s rib, tekor—banana leaf whose oneend affixed by bamboo pin or semat, takir—smallcontainer made from banana leaf where both endsaffixed by bamboo pin and usually used to containsambal, fried bean, nut, grated coconut and so forth andtatakan busung—the base made from coconut leafinspired by the base of oblation. Escape from a daily bustles cangive a refreshing ambience for bodyand mind. Whether it is a silent breakor leisure activity, of course it willenergize and endow with new spiritand experience. A journey to otherbeautiful places, for instance, is agood idea to consider. Moreover, thejourney also contains a spiritualtheme. It is definitely double-ben-efits in a single step further.

Balinese people known as reli-gious community have a tradition toimmortalize their clan relationship.Through generations, they maintainthe relationship in order the follow-ing generations could pay homageto their ancestors accordingly otherthan the Almighty God. A mediumused to gather all members is a clantemple. There are several clansgrowing in Bali such as pasek, senggu, pande, sangging, arya andso forth. Today, they have spreadout throughout Bali and even out-side Bali. Although they have mi-grated, they remain to get in touchwith the family of origin, especiallyfamily temple.

Beyond the pedarman or maintemple at Besakih, the mothertemple of Bali, nearly all clans havebranch temple in regencies acrossBali. On that account, they willgather on the festival. Every year, there are always temple anniversary

Spiritual Journey for Human and Soulwhether at branch temple or atBesakih and other temples. This op-portunity will become a memorablereunion among the same clan andtighten their genealogical relation-ship. If a clan has at least three clantemples, they would attend the anni-versary for three times a year.

Outside the clan temple, the Ba-linese also pay homage at publictemples on the anniversary of thetemples or Galungan andKuningan festivity. These becomea moment of spiritual journey. Dueto their enthusiasm, devotees fromdistance places usually have beenready early in the morning. Otherthan intended to get cooler ambi-ence, it is also meant to avoid longqueue under heat of the sun.

Some public temples below of-fer challenging spiritual journey. The Tanah Lot Temple with mag-nificent view in Tabanan locatedin the sea can be reached only atlow tide. During the temple festi-val, local authority usually issuesa tidal chart that can help devoteesto schedule their worship. Sec-ondly is Lempuyang Temple inKarangasem. It really needs fitstamina, as devotees should climbthe mountain of 1.174 metersabove sea level and pass throughmore than 1,500 steps. Another‘challenging’ one is Menjangan

Temple. It is located within the BaliBarat National Park, Buleleng Re-gency. With some 30-minute sailfrom Labuan Lalang, devotees willarrive at Menjangan Island.

Lately, a tradition developedwhere after performing ngaben cre-mation, the procession is ended bymeajar-ajar or pilgrimage of thesoul. Together with the represen-tation of the purified soul, the fam-ily will visit temples located atmountain area (Gunung) that usu-ally choosing Dalem Puri templeat the temple complex of Besakihand a temple located near the sea(segara). The most visited templefor the latter category is GoaLawah Temple located inKlungkung. In this procession, these two destinations representtwo sites in the mountain-seawardorientation and it is then called asnyegara-gunung.

Thus, Balinese people performtheir spiritual journey regularly allthe year round. This has social andspiritual dimension. Socially, theystay to maintain familiar relation-ship by meeting their big familyfrom many places. Then, they spiri-tually get in touch with their prede-cessors in the togetherness spiritthrough the worship. At least, theycould say hello and gratitude for theguidance endowed. (BTN/punia)

The Office for National Statis-tics will on Tuesday publish dataexpected to reveal that Britain ex-ited recession in the fourth quarterof 2009, analysts have widely fore-cast.

A return to growth betweenOctober and December last year af-ter six quarters of negative outputwill see Britain following all othermajor economies out of recession.Economists predict growth of 0.4percent in the fourth quarter.

However, the future for theBritish and wider global economyis far from rosy, with the IMF andthe United Nations recently warn-ing of a possible renewed or“double-dip recession” this year.

Those worries have beenheightened in Europe, where sev-eral nations — notably Greece andPortugal — are struggling to copewith soaring public debt.

“It’s definitely worth pointingout that, even if we do exit reces-sion, the hard work will only justbe beginning,” said Colin Ellis, aneconomist at Daiwa Capital Mar-kets Europe.

“Shrinking the massive budgetdeficit, getting private sector em-ployment growing and generatinggenuine wage growth will be bigchallenges over the next fewyears.”

Ellis also told AFP: “There is

ZURICH - Pressure forbank reforms is set to grow at agathering of the world’s elite atDavos this week, shortly afterUS President Barack Obama setthe stage with an offensiveagainst Wall Street excesses.

However, emboldened by agrowing economic recovery, bankers — who were conspicu-ously missing from last year’sWorld Economic Forum meet-ing in the Swiss mountain resort— are set to fight back in vocalfashion, experts said.

Excessive risk taking bythe banking industry has beencited as one of the causes of therecent financial and economiccrises and regulators have beentasked by top politicians todraw up new rules to rein thebanks in.

But as the world slowlyemerges from recession — theworst since the Great Depres-sion — opposing voices frombanks on these new rules aregrowing louder.

“The lobbying is gettingvery strong and the politicalwill can be diluted quickly,”warned Cedric Tille, professorof economics at the GraduateInstitute for International andDevelopment Studies inGeneva.

“It’s urgent to put these re-forms in place,” said Tille, aformer economist at the FederalReserve Bank of New York.

Proponents of the reformwould find an ally in Obama, who announced plans on Thurs-day to prevent banks or finan-cial institutions in the UnitedStates from owning, investingin or sponsoring hedge fund orprivate equity funds.

The new rules would forcefirms to choose between activi-ties such as trading in stocksand sometimes risky financialinstruments for their own ben-efit — and traditional activities, like making loans and collect-ing deposits.

The Group of 20 (G20)leading developed and emerg-ing economies has also askedfor new rules to clean up thesector, with more stringent re-quirements on capitalizationand debt ratios due to be intro-duced by the end of 2012.

Rainer Skierka, an analystat Bank Sarasin, noted that thenew rules were unpopular since

LONDON - An end to Britain’s longest recession on record will likely be confirmed this weekbut recovery for the debt-ridden nation — facing an election this year — will be far from smooth, economists warned.

a risk of a double-dip (recession)during 2010.”

British state borrowing wors-ened to a record deficit in Decem-ber, official data revealed lastThursday, sparking speculationabout public spending cuts andtaxation hikes in the months ahead.

Britain has borrowed 119.9billion pounds (136.7 billion euros,193.3 billion dollars) in its currentfinancial year which began in April, compared with 63.6 billion poundsrecorded at the same stage of lastyear.

The government meanwhilepredicts that it will have to borrowa record 178 billion pounds during2009/2010.

The state of Britain’s troubledeconomy has become the key battleground ahead of a general electiondue by June and which is likely tosee Prime Minister GordonBrown’s Labour Party defeated bythe main opposition Conservatives, according to recent polls.

Whichever party wins power,Britain faces a decade of economicpain, experts warned.

“The UK economy has movedout of a decade of debt and into adecade of painful readjustment,”analysts at financial group Ernstand Young warned in a key reportpublished earlier this month.

“After years of relying on do-

mestic spending and borrowing theeconomy now needs to rebalancetowards saving and exporting, orrisk stagnating,” said the study bythe group’s Independent TreasuryEconomic Model (ITEM) Club.

Gross domestic product (GDP)will meanwhile “struggle” to reach1.0 percent this year, they said.

“The UK is facing anotherchallenging year,” added chief eco-nomic adviser Peter Spencer.

“We are no longer in a posi-tion to borrow — the massive debtsthat we racked up in the last decadenow need to be repaid. The con-sumer is completely cashed out —with consumer spending likely toincrease by just 0.4 percent thisyear.”

The economy, which is alsostruggling with high unemploymentcaused by the financial crisis, hascontracted for six quarters in a row— its longest recession sincerecords began in 1955.

Finance minister Alistair Dar-ling recently admitted that Britain’srecession would be deeper thanthought — with the economy pre-dicted to have shrunk 4.75 percentin 2009 compared with a prior of-ficial estimate of 3.5 percent.

The nation’s economy is ex-pected to grow by 1.0-1.5 percentin 2010, Darling added, matchinghis previous forecast.

Pressure for bankreforms to rise atDavos meets

they could generate costs and cutthe profit margins of banks.

In addition, banks would berequired to set aside more moneyas capital — reducing the fundsthey could use for investment togenerate better returns.

“Banks are doing intenselobbying as the new demands oncapital reduces their profits,”said Tille.

Bankers are likely to bemore vocal in their lobbyingagainst the reforms, saidNariman Behravesh, chief econo-mist at IHS Global Insight.

“A lot of bankers can’t waitto get out of the control of gov-ernments. Some feel so stifled,”he said.

“They are going to do every-thing they can to resist the re-forms. They will be more vocalthis year,” he added.

Bankers and finance minis-ters are to si t together onWednesday to discuss “structuraldeficiencies (that) persist in theregulation of systemic financialrisk,” according to a programmeof the Davos meeting circulatedby organisers.

On Saturday, the focus willbe on how the largest financialinstitutions in the world shouldbe regulated.

Central bankers like the Eu-ropean Central Bank’s Jean-Claude Trichet as well as Egypt’sFinance Minister YoussefBoutros-Ghali and FrenchEconomy Minister ChristineLagarde, are expected to pile onthe pressure, analysts said.

Regulators have cautionedthat reining in banks is becom-ing a key issue, particularlynow that governments haveshown that they were willing tobail out ailing banks in a finan-cial crisis.

“Before the crisis, youdidn’t know how states weregoing to behave in the event ofa crisis,” Switzerland’s centralbank chief Jean-Pierre Roth ob-served recently before he re-tired.

“After the crisis, the head ofa major bank knows that in caseof a major crisis in the future hecan count on state backing, andthat’s the parameter that haschanged fundamentally.”

The pre-crisis ambiguity hadbroadly encouraged greater pru-dence, he added. Roth cautionedthat its loss now posed a “funda-mental problem,” hence the needfor regulation to take over.

LOS ANGELES – While Jeff Bridges and Sandra Bullock’s chances forAcademy Award gold were advanced with their trophies at the Screen Ac-tors Guild Awards, the blockbuster “Avatar” may have felt a touch blue.

“Inglourious Basterds” won theSAG Award for best ensemble per-formance, which can be a precursorto the top Oscar award. Last year,SAG’s movie cast award was pre-sented to “Slumdog Millionaire,”which went on to win the best pic-ture Oscar.

“It was an honor to be part of it,Quentin,” “Inglourious Basterds” castmember Eli Roth said in acceptingthe award for his fellow actors in theoff-kilter World War II revenge saga.

Bullock declined — strenuously— to look ahead. “Shhhhh. Shhhhh.Shhhhh,” Bullock said backstagewhen she was asked to speculate onher Oscar chances. She won for herportrayal of a tenacious real-lifemom, Leigh Anne Tuohy, who helpeda youth in need, future Americanfootball player Michael Oher.

“I would be a hostess or a wait-ress or a house restorer before I everconsidered myself an actor, becauseI never thought I was good enough,”she added. Although respected byhis peers, Bridges has largely beenbypassed for major awards.

“I love being an actor — pretend-ing to be other people and getting intothe shoes of other folks,” said Bridges, who plays a hard-luck, hard-livingcountry singer in “Crazy Heart.”

Waltz was honored for his roleas an enthusiastically ruthless Nazi.Mo’Nique’s trophy came for hersearing portrayal of an abusivemother in “Precious: Based on theNovel ‘Push’ By Sapphire.”

On the TV side of the SAGAwards, the cast of AMC’s 1960sMadison Avenue saga “Mad Men”won the trophy for best drama se-ries ensemble for the second yearin a row, while 19 cast members ofFox TV newcomer “Glee,” aboutmisfits in a high school singing club, accepted the award for best comedyseries ensemble.

“There are 22 million Americanfamilies with sons or brothers orhusbands that have served or areserving in the military and theywant to know what those people gothrough. This film shows it.”

Junger, a regular contributor toVanity Fair magazine and best-sell-ing author of “The Perfect Storm,”said the idea of the film “was tomake a movie that was completelyabout the soldiers’ experience.”

“They can’t ask a general, ‘Whyare we in the Korengal Valley, Sir?’So we did not interview generals. They can’t talk to politicians, theycan’t see their families so we didn’tdo any of that in the movie,” Jungerexplained.

“We didn’t even want an outsidenarrator.” The only voices in thefilm are those of the soldiers, 24/7.“They let us into their lives and theyaccepted the fact that we would filmeverything and they never hid any-thing from us,” Hetherington said.

WASHINGTON – Another earthquake isthreatening to hit Haiti with as much, if not moreforce than the massive temblor that leveled Port-au-Prince, seismologists said, urging the coun-try to rebuild with strict norms.

Aftershocks have already rattled the impov-erished Caribbean nation in the days followingthe January 12 quake that killed over 110,000people, left nearly 610,000 homeless and injuredscores more. On Wednesday, a magnitude 5.9temblor struck a people already scrambling torebuild their tattered lives.

But more are likely on their way. The USGeological Survey (USGS) estimated on Thurs-day that there was a 25 percent probability thatone or several magnitude 6 aftershocks couldstrike in the coming weeks, although they willspace out more and more over time.

If the devastating magnitude 7 quake that hitnearly two weeks ago freed much of the tensionaccumulated on one portion of the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden fault zone, another segment eastof the epicenter and adjacent to Haiti’s capitalPort-au-Prince has barely moved, according to the USGS.

Yet part of this fault zone accu-mulated more strain due to the slid-ing of North American and Carib-bean tectonic plates that could un-leash all that strength at any mo-ment without warning.

The geological agency based itspredictions on preliminary mea-sures of deformations using radar, satellite and aerial imagery.

“We just know from other earth-quakes worldwide and from the his-tory of Haiti that large earthquakescan occur close in time,” USGSseismologist David Schwartz toldAFP. “Not one of us would be sur-prised.”

LONDON – People with early lung cancer who quit smoking could double theirchances of surviving, a new study says. Until now, there has been little proof thatquitting smoking after developing lung cancer makes any difference to survival.

published Friday in the BMJ, formerly knownas the British Medical Journal.

Lung cancer is the top cancer worldwide, and the prognosis is usually poor. Onlyabout 7 percent of patients make it to fiveyears, though about 20 percent of patientsare diagnosed early enough to be treated.

“The message is you should never giveup on giving up (smoking),” said AmandaParsons, of the U.K. Centre for TobaccoControl Studies at the University of Bir-mingham, who led the study. “Even at thestage where you have been diagnosed withearly stage lung cancer ... if you give upsmoking, your body can still partially re-cover and your risk is reduced,” she said.

While some doctors recommend lung can-cer patients quit smoking, not all do. Somedoctors and nurses “think it is inhuman todwell on the matter — that it adds to feel-ings of guilt and takes away a lifelong com-fort from the dying patient,” wrote Tom Trea-sure of University College London and JanetTreasure of King’s College London in anaccompanying editorial in the BMJ.

They said patients and their familiesshould now be told about the study results,“because the potential benefit is great.”

The research might also provide some clueson how smoking causes cancer. Scientists aren’tsure if tobacco smoke or nicotine affect lungcancer once it has developed, though there issome evidence they may speed up the disease.Knowing how cigarettes impact cancer couldpotentially lead to new treatments, Parsons andcolleagues wrote. The study was paid for bythe British Heart Foundation, Cancer ResearchU.K. and other governmental bodies.

Smokers diagnosed with lung cancershould not assume they have beenhanded a death sentence, as quittingtobacco even at this stage can greatlyboost their survival chances, doctorssaid on Friday.AFP/File/Frederick Florin

Astronauts finally getInternet access in space

Internet access is possible whenever thereis a solid high-speed communication link.

It’s expected to provide a big moraleboost. “Long-duration astronauts, theycommit to spending months away fromfamily and friends. It’s a pretty uniquestate of isolation,” said NASA spokesmanKelly Humphries. “We expect this to en-hance morale and productivity.”

The astronauts will be subject to thesame Internet access guidelines as otheron-the-job government employees, namely no interfering with work.

Is NASA worried the astronauts mightspend too much time online, more than200 miles up? “These are highly drivenindividuals,” Humphries said with achuckle, “so they’re going to get theirwork done first.”

The astronauts already had an InternetProtocol phone for private calls to familyand friends. Creamer is one month into afive-month mission. He is sharing thespace station with another American, oneJapanese and two Russians.

The Enriquillo fault zone, which runs alongthe southern portion of the island of Hispaniolashared by Haiti and the Dominican Republic, could generate a tremor measuring up to 7.2 —slightly higher than the original quake — accord-ing to Eric Calais, a seismologist at Purdue Uni-versity.

“Earthquakes in this region tend to repeatthemselves in sequences,” he said in an interview, noting that similarly large temblors have shakenHaiti at least four times in the past three centu-ries, including those of 1751 and 1770, whichcompletely destroyed Port-au-Prince.

“Port-au-Prince must be rebuilt according tostrict seismic norms.” Some nuclear plants thatcan resist magnitude 8 earthquakes are now be-ing built, he noted.

MELBOURNE, Australia – U.S. Open champion Juan Martin del Potro’s bid for back-to-back Grand Slam titles ended in a fourth-round, five-set loss to No. 14 Marin Cilic on Sunday.

“It’s been great moment for myself,” Henin said. “It’sa great feeling to be back, been a great fight and thankyou.”

The seven-time Grand Slam winner dominated thefirst-set tiebreaker after saving three set points in the 12thgame. After dropping the second set, Henin brokeWickmayer’s serve to open the deciding third set andwas on top after that.

Del Potro struggled most of the way through the 4-hour, 38-minute match against Cilic, who exacted a mea-sure of revenge with the victory. The 21-year-old Croatlost to del Potro in the fourth round here last year and inthe U.S. Open quarterfinals.

Del Potro had been bothered by right wrist pain thatforced him out of a warmup tournament and was un-doubtedly weary from a five-set, second round win overJames Blake — the longest of the tournament in terms oftotal games at 62.

He said the wrist and the foot were only part of theproblem. What hurts? “The whole body.” The increasedexpectations on him weren’t a bother, he said.

“No, I really enjoyed that pressure. The crowd is un-believable with me. They support me every match, ev-ery point,” said del Potro, who plans to go home andrecover. “I was down in every match, and they help meto keep fighting, like today. I really like it, that pressure.”

When del Potro hit his last backhand long, Cilic sankto both knees, arms in the air. He volleyed the ball highinto the stands, where his most vocal supporters werecheering wildly.

“Today was my best so far,” Cilic said. “Physically Ithink (del Potro) was tired and he struggled, but I wasfeeling really good ... and I had some crazy fans.”

Cilic, who converted four of his 16 breakpoint chances, will next play the winner of a big-serving duel betweenformer No. 1 Andy Roddick or 2007 Australian Openfinalist Fernando Gonzalez of Chile.

Nadal only dropped serve once against Karlovic, tosurrender the second set. In the third and fourth sets, hebroke the Croat in the third games to get on top early.

He showed plenty of emotion after earning abreakpoint in the third set, screaming out “Vamos!” andspinning around as he ripped his left elbow back andraised his left knee.

The regulars stayed inEurope with their clubs and Brad-ley used a group from MajorLeague Soccer and Scandinavianclubs on winter break, players try-ing to earn roster spots as reserves.

This was the first of five plannedwarmups ahead of the World Cup.Most American regulars also willmiss the Feb. 24 game against ElSalvador at Tampa, Fla., but U.S.coach Bob Bradley should have arelatively full-strength roster for theMarch 3 match against the Nether-lands in Amsterdam — the lastgame before he picks his 23-manroster. The Americans then prob-ably will play a pair of exhibitionsat home in May before heading toSouth Africa, where they also playSlovenia and Algeria in the firstround.

MANCHESTER, England – Sir Alex Ferguson has pleaded with Manchester United support-ers to put their dissatisfaction with the club’s owners behind them and back his team as theyattempt to retain their Premier League title.

the first time in over three months, sup-porters sporadically broke into chantsagainst the Glazers although Fergusoninsisted that was no problem for hisplayers.

“I don’t think it was dissentingagainst them at all and I don’t think itaffected the players,” he said.

Instead, Ferguson focused uponRooney’s performance, which took hisseason’s tally to 20 goals, three shortof his personal best.

“Wayne’s goals were, without adoubt, the highlight,” said Ferguson.“It’s the first time he has scored fourfor us and the first time a United playerhas scored four since Ole GunnarSolskjaer some years ago.

“That was pleasing. He’s in greatgoal scoring form at the moment. I thinkhe’ll better 23, I’m sure of that. He’s ingreat goalscoring form and that’s anencouragement for Wayne. He’ll want

to develop himself as a scorer and to-day there were some terrific finishes.”

Ferguson was also content with thereturn of England defender RioFerdinand for the first time since Octo-ber.

He said: “I thought, apart from aspell with 20 minutes to go, that theback four looked very comfortable.Rio’s presence, composure and balancestands out.”

United now stand top of the PremierLeague for the first time in over threemonths, the sort of position Fergusoninsisted he wanted to be in at the startof the year.

“Goal difference could be importantand it’s significant being top at this timeof the season,” he added. “I know op-ponents have games in hand but theyhave got to win those games. We’re inthe right place. It’s better being top inJanuary than anywhere else.”

NEW YORK – Juan Manuel Lopez wants to follow his idol Felix Trinidad as the next greatPuerto Rican fighter, winning a handful of titles as he climbs through the weight divisions. JuanMacaptured No. 2 in style on Saturday night.

“He’s a great fighter and a greathitter,” said Luevano, his left eyeswelling shut. “I was blocking thatright punch during the entire fight, and he got one in.”

Lopez (28-0, 25 KOs) had lookeddominant at junior featherweight, and he was simply overwhelming at126 pounds. He didn’t have to drainhimself nearly as much to makeweight and showed that he can be aforce in a crowded division that in-cludes Chris John.

“He fought a really intelligentfight,” said promoter Bob Arum, who would eventually like to putLopez and Gamboa against eachother. “Let’s see if there’s any feath-erweights left standing, I want towipe them all out, so there’s nobodyleft but those two guys.”

The outcome certainly delighteda reunion of great Puerto Ricanfighters.

Trinidad, the former five-timechampion, drew the first big roarfrom a crowd of more than 5,000 thatpacked the smaller theater at Madi-son Square Garden. He was followedby another roar for former welter-weight titleholder Miguel Cotto, whose late father was honored beforethe main event with a 10-bell saluteand moment of silence.

Cotto, who is coming off a loss toManny Pacquiao, was in town to workon an agreement to challenge 154-pound titleholder Yuri Foreman onJune 12. Cotto would be reclaiminghis annual date on the eve of the PuertoRican Day parade in New York.

Despite all the star power in thehouse, including former heavy-weight champ Lennox Lewis,Gamboa (17-0, 15 KOs) may havestolen the show with his electrify-ing display.

The 2004 Olympic gold medal-ist from Cuba did damage with hisfirst blow, a counter-punching leftthat stunned Mtagwa in the middleof the ring. Gamboa then knockedthe granite-chinned Mtagwa downwith 15 seconds left in the round, and the Tanzanian-born challengernever looked the same.

Gamboa dumped him again mid-way through the second round withdevastating combinations, finishingthe fight moments later whenMtagwa (26-14-2) was unable to gethimself into a clinch to buy time.

“We knew he was fast but we feltwe could handle his speed,”Mtagwa’s trainer Joe Parella said.“The game plan was to go threerounds, battle through it, butMtagwa got caught early.”
