Her stint aboard a Disney cruise ship was “my test,” she said. “Two days later, I went in and auditioned for ‘American Idol.’” Headlining the Carnival series “is like a full circle,” she added. Hudson is scheduled to perform June 18 on Carnival Ecstasy and June 19 on Carnival Breeze, both in Cozumel, Mexico.

Carnival has struggled to restore its image after three ships broke down last year. Images of passengers stranded at sea, ships towed back to port and trip cancellations created a torrent of bad publicity for the company that depressed ticket prices and revenue.

Other performers and bands scheduled to perform are Chicago, Daughtry, Foreigner, Gavin DeGraw, Jewel, Kansas, Lady Antebellum, LeAnn Rimes, Martina McBride, Olivia Newton-John, REO Speed-wagon, STYX and Trace Adkins.

So far 49 shows are confirmed for the year. Styx will kick off the series with an April 7 show on the Fantasy in Nassau. In all, eight ships are participating. Tickets will only be sold to individuals taking the cruise.

Hudson sang “One Night Only” and several other songs for about 200 people at the Cutting Room, a Manhattan perfor-mance space, where Carnival’s senior vice president of guest operations, Mark Tamis, announced the program.

Apparently, if you look at climate change the right way, it looks like money instead of disaster — if you’re looking at it from a corporate board-room, for example, and not, say, coastal Bangladesh.

Journalist McKenzie Funk spent six years traveling the world to report “Windfall,” his account of how gov-ernments and corporations — many of whom heavily contribute to the problem of global warming but balk at mandates to cut greenhouse gas emissions — are confronting climate change with engi-neering, money and lawyers.

Funk has written a fun book human-izing the problems of climate change, focused on the colorful entrepreneurs who see in an increasingly inhospi-table world golden opportunities for

indoor skiing, firefighters employed by insurance companies, Dutch-made seawalls and floating beaches for South Pacific resorts that otherwise might disappear.

He finds that, for those who can afford to adapt, things will be fine, probably. Then he investigates what will happen to everyone else — the Bangladeshis stuck on the wrong side of an Indian border fence, the Africans frantically trying to build a wall of trees to keep the Sahara from expanding, the proudly independent island nations told to consider merging since they’re all losing land anyway.

Funk doesn’t waste time with cli-mate change skeptics — there’s enough scientific evidence to back up the envi-ronmental effects he describes. Instead, he considers a thornier issue: the true cost of adapting to climate change.

NEW YORK — Back when she was a nobody, long before she blasted to stardom on “American Idol” and “Dreamgirls,” Jennifer Hudson sang on a cruise ship. And on Wednesday, the singer said she would do it again — this time as the headliner for a new concert series on Carnival Cruise Lines called Carnival Live. “I used to work on a cruise ship, a long time ago,” said Hudson before performing at a Carnival news con-ference in midtown Manhattan. “That’s what I did before I did ‘American Idol.’”

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Chief of Gilimanuk Marine Police, Nyoman Wirya Sucipta, said on Tuesday (Jan 21) that security by police were still in appropriate with the standard operating procedures conducted each day. Inspection of luggage, passengers and vehicles remained to use the existing equipment.

After the arrest, the security at Gilimanuk was further enhanced. Other than supervision at Gili-manuk, strict supervision was also performed in a number of short cuts allowing people or goods

to enter into Bali. In the surveillance, police made cooperation with fishermen and pecalang or customary security guard at Gilimanuk.

In addition to the entrance into Bali, police also made security alert at the exit point of Bali to the harbor. This endeavor was meant to antici-pate the criminals or stolen items such as motor theft being out of Bali. “Vigilance and security remain in appropriate with the standard operat-ing procedures. We do it as good as possible,” he explained. (kmb26)

Bali PostGIANYAR - Heavy rain happening

on Tuesday morning (Jan 21) caused a number of roads in tourism areas like Jalan Lungsiakan-Kedewatan Ubud to flood. Flash water supposed to flow in the river then overflowed onto the roads. Floodwa-ter reached the height of sidewalks so it made difficult for road transport to move in the local area.

As a result, the floodwater did not only disrupt the activities of road users, but also made the store and art shop owners help-less. “This overflowing condition always occurs when it rains,” said Headman of Lungsiakan, I Nyoman Jaya, when met at Lungsiakan.

Similar comment was also conveyed by a store owner, Kadek Agus Suprianto aka Deck Co. The floodwater indeed oc-curred when it rained. Water and garbage in the water channel of Subak Lungsiakan were brought from the upstream area. “When it rains, the flood is ascertained to happen on this road,” he said.

Against the floodwater, his party then reported the incident to the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) of Gianyar. The

Quick Response Team of the BPBD Gianyar came down to resolve the water blockage at some points so that no long after the overflowing water could recede by degrees. Some sidewalks were opened to take out the rubbish shutting off the flow of water.

The overflowing water was caused by the blockage of water flow in the river of Subak Lungsiakan. Allegedly, the rubbish material was still left in the river tunnel after the repairs carried out some time ago. The water supposed to flow southward was blocked so the water overflowed to the west and flooded the Jalan Lungsiakan - Kedewatan.

The Head of the BPBD Gianyar, Anak Agung Gede Oka Digjaya, coming down to location said the team already broke down the rubbish blockage causing the flood and drilled at the three-way intersec-tion on Jalan Mpu Tantular, Lungsiakan. Former Regent of Gianyar Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardhana Sukawati who happened to be passing at the location was down to see the effort made by the team of the BPBD Gianyar. With the current condition of the river, the existing roads should at least be elevated. (kmb16)

Bali PostNEGARA - After newly established

and occupied by traders, the Yehembang Public Market building has been filled with stickers of legislative candidates. In addition, the other public areas that are targeted by candidates to put up billboard are the three-way intersection leading to the parking area of Rambutsiwi Temple. In front of the entrance gates toward the area in front of the temple currently thronged by pilgrims is also filled with such billboards.

From observation on Wednesday (Jan 22), a number of store walls, doors and stalls in the Yehembang Public Market were filled with stickers of the legislative candidates. Such condition even caused the market to look dirty because the walls were filled with stickers. Even, similar stickers were also affixed to the wall of Yehembang Market head office. The stickers belonged to one of the candidates of the PDI-P belonging to Pekutatan and Mendoyo electoral district.

Meanwhile, the three-way intersection to the parking lot of Rambutsiwi Temple

was also embellished with a row of bill-boards and banners owned by legislative candidates. They belonged to candidates of Gerindra Party and Regional Repre-sentative Council. Even, the billboards increased rapidly ahead of the peak of pujawali or temple anniversary falling on Wednesday (Jan 22).

Chairman of the Jembrana Electoral Supervisory Committee, Pande Made Ady Mulyawan, said that his party had issued a recommendation to the Electoral Commission related to the violation of campaign in Jembrana. A total of 951 vio-lations had been observed and performed by all parties participating in the election in Jembrana. The authority to discipline lay in the Jembrana Electoral Commission and Jembrana government. But according to him, the installation of sticker was rather difficult to be disciplined considering it was quite a few. Other than in public places such as markets, they were also found at roadside, electric poles and telephone poles. Nevertheless, the stickers in the Yehembang Public Market would also be cleaned up. DITA VON TEESE’S CAMEO

Guests at the Jean Paul Gaultier show gasped when American bur-lesque dancer Dita Von Teese walked out for a cameo appearance at this haute couture show in a death-de-fying small corset. The diminutive brunette’s body looked distorted in the tight, laced blue green bodice that cinched even her tiny 22-inch waist. The corset flourished with a butterfly embellishment that Gaultier said was inspired by seeing mounted butterflies in a shop on a recent trip to London.

Gaultier is no stranger to corsets and became world famous for putting singer Madonna in one in 1990 as part of her “Blond Ambition Tour.”

VALENTINO’S ENCYCLOPEDIC COUTURE OPUS

An incredible hand-painted set with butterflies and foliage met guests at Valentino’s encyclopedic couture show, thanks a to collaboration with Rome Opera House. Valentino can always be counted on to produce the most archetypally couture show of the season.

Here, their army of indefatigable Italian seamstresses — the “petites mains” — spent sometimes up to 2,500 hours of embroidery time on just one garment. And it showed in the delicacy of the gowns.

Medieval images of fawns, mixed with youthful frothy tutus, silken cream Asian pajama suits, a bronze Celtic pattern and even a Grecian toga dress in alabaster white with an envi-able cape attached to the sleeves.

If references were myriad, one thing held it all together: luxury. From dentelle lace, to natural tussah silk, feathers, pearls and crystals — this collection shimmered.

PARIS — Thousands of hours of fastidious couture burst out onto the catwalks for Wednesday’s dramatic Paris shows — including displays from Valentino, Elie Saab and Viktor & Rolf. The spring-summer 2014 collections provoked applause, gasps, cheers and generally so much enthusiasm that one fash-ion journalist even fell off the stage trying to speak to Jean Paul Gaultier. The Associated Press also caught up with a real life haute couture client who owns over 1,500 astronomically-priced gowns. Here are the reports, tidbits and highlights from the day:

point of his show. It pushed the Lebanese designer, who’s better known for traditional red carpet traf-fic-stoppers, to produce an unusually subtle collection. There were, of course, the predictable bread-and-butter cinched silhouettes.

But the display achieved a rare mood which evoked the progres-sion of day: From the blush pinks of dawn, the pure white of high noon, the purples of dusk, and then to reso-lution in midnight black. There was also a nostalgia for yesteryear.

Impressive crinolines appeared on several looks, all with the tra-ditional couture embellishments, harking back to the styles the 1950s Hollywood actresses. Several looks would not have looked out of place on Grace Kelly. Appropriately from the front row applauded Spanish actress Paz Vega, who stars in the up-coming biopic “Grace of Monaco.”

MEET A REAL LIFE COUTURE CLIENT

Haute couture, the artisan-based method of making clothes that dates back over 150 years, is bought by a core group of no more than 100 rich women around the world for tens of thousands of dollars a piece. One of these legendary women, Monaco-based Mouna Ayoub, sat in pride of place on the front row of the Jean Paul Gaultier show.

She told The Associated Press she’s bought over 1,500 couture gowns over 33 years. “I wear haute couture every time I go out in public, I cannot stand ready-to-wear. Except when I go shopping where I wear jeans,” she said.

Houses such as Chanel, Jean Paul Gaultier and Christian Dior each pos-sess special mannequins created with Ayoub’s exact measurements to cre-ate the personalized, perfect fit.

JEAN PAUL GAULTIER’S BUTTERFLY EFFECT

If the irreverent French designer was aiming for design transforma-

tions on Wednesday, after recent lukewarm show reviews, channel-ing chrysalises and butterflies was not it. Gaultier always makes for one of the most exciting couture shows of the season— admired in equal measure for their celebrity appearances as for the endearing positive energy the designer per-sonally exudes.

And here there was plenty of vibrancy: Butterfly sleeves, peaked shoulders, leather evening gloves, see-through lace pants, conical bras, feathers in the hair and a bride who looked like a showgirl.

But the recurring imagery of butterflies — on large hats and shaped in organza dresses was

sometimes overused, at times clut-tering the otherwise beautiful sil-houettes. There were great ideas, like netting in skirts that evoked a butterfly catcher’s net.

The best looks, like one single orange coral butterfly blouse whose l i t t le organza ruffles seemed to flutter, were often the simplest.

It was impossible to attract qualified travelers to Bali without the support of adequate promotion fund. In the promotion of tourism, it was not enough only by dissemi-nating a sheet of brochure to draw visitors to spend holiday in Bali. It was expressed by the Treasurer of the Indonesian Tourism Industry Association (GIPI) of Bali, Bagus Soediana.

“The decline in the fund for Bali tourism promotion is certainly im-possible to draw wealthy travelers. Technically, in tourism promotion it is not enough to be carried out by distributing a sheet of brochure to attract travelers in order to spend holiday in Bali,” he revealed.

According to him, the promo-tion activities overseas could also be done in the form of a roadshow through table top and a party in a building. In addition, it could also be made by presenting the nature of Bali through DVDs and other promotional media.

“Overseas promotion will defi-nitely require an adequate budget. If the promotional fund is only sufficient to spread brochures, the visitors that can be attracted to come to Bali will be those of lower spending,” said the advisory to Bali Tourist Transport Association (Pawiba).

He argued that to attract quali-fied travelers, the promotional media and activities made in the

countries of tourism market of Bali should be well packed. It was intended to attract the prospective travelers to come to Bali.

“For instance, in order to attract travelers who have long length-of-stay in Bali such as those from Germany, America, Europe and Russia, the tour package on offer must be interesting,” he affirmed.

Meanwhile, the Bali Govern-ment Tourism Office targeted the number of foreign tourist visit in 2014 could reach 3.5 million tour-ists, while domestic tourist reached 6.5 million. Then, the number of tourist arrivals to the Island of the Gods in 2013 reached 3,278,697 foreign tourists. This figure in-creased from the previous year amounting to 2,892,019 foreign tourists.

The most foreign tourists vis-iting Bali during January to De-cember 2013 were from Australia (826,388 people), the next posi-tions were respectively occupied by China (387,533 people), Ja-pan (208,116 people), Malaysia (199,232 people) and Singapore (138,388 people). In the mean-time, the visit of tourists from New Zealand fell 0.60 percent to 48,749 people from the previ-ous year (2012) reaching 49,044 people. Meanwhile, the tourist visit of Thailand in 2013 also de-creased by 3.98 percent to 34,728 people. (kmb27)

Bali PostDENPASAR - Bank Indone-

sia (BI) takes various policies to oversee the process of economic correction. The policy is aimed to ensure the inflation in order to remain under control. Even, this year the BI is optimistic if the in-flation in Bali Province can reach the national inflation rate of 4.5 percent.

“We are very optimistic if the inflation in Bali and Nusa Tenggara can achieve the national inflation target of 4.5 percent, more or less than 1 percent,” said Representa-tive Head of Bank Indonesia for

Region III Bali and Nusa Tenggara, Benny Siswanto, in Denpasar, not long ago.

He said the role optimization of the regional inflation control team (TPID) of Bali Province and synergy among the TPIDs in the framework of the regional and national level would be able to maintain the price fluctuations at a reasonable and stable level. By all means, this effort would require the support of the business commu-nity to participate in the attempt to control the price, so the availability of goods and inflation expectation continued to be maintained.

“Rising inflation after the fuel price hike has reduced back to historical pattern. It is inseparable from the control against the sub-sequent influence of the fuel price hike. The inflation only looks strong on administered goods and volatile food, while core inflation remains below 5.0 percent,” he said.

According to him, in terms of monetary policy, the BI rate would remain to be consistently directed at controlling the inflation in order to meet the target. The stance of monetary policy was also intended to support the endeavor to reduce

the current account deficit towards a sustainable and maintain the stability of the financial system in order to stay strong.

Nevertheless, Benny Siswanto said the BI did not merely have commitment to manage in order the inflation to remain in the range of the target, but it was also widely directed to control the current account toward sus-tainable condition, and maintain the stability of financial system. “Overall, the direction of Bank Indonesia policy is implemented through a policy mix of monetary, macro-prudential and payment

system,” he said.He mentioned the high eco-

nomic performance needed to be supported by price stability so the people’s prosperity could be maintained. Inflation until the end of 2013 was estimated to be at the level of 7.44 percent and attempted to be lower than the na-tional inflation. This achievement posed the result of our shared work through the synergy created between Bank Indonesia, local governments and other parties in the forum of the regional inflation control team (TPID) of Bali and Nusa Tenggara. Yet as Obama prepares to stand before Americans for his annual State of the Union address on Tues-day, people are largely pessimistic about the country’s direction, down on the condition of the economy and doubtful it will bounce back anytime soon. Unemployment? Seventy percent think it will go higher or stay the same.

Obama “wasn’t a total disap-pointment,” allows Joshua Parker, a 37-year-old small businessman in Tennessee. “He didn’t put us into a Great Depression.” But Parker, a self-described political independent and conservative, suspects that someone who un-derstood the economy better could have done more. “He would prob-ably be a guy I would like to hang

out with if he wasn’t president,” says Parker. “But I like a lot of people who are not qualified to be president.”

Across the country, Democrat Sabrina Carag, a 58-year-old retired accountant in California gives the president higher marks on both performance and person-ality. If things aren’t great in the country, this former Republican reasons, it’s the fault of her old party and the Republicans in Congress.

“They block him every step of the way,” says Carag. “I don’t think it’s fair for them to say he’s been a bad president. How can you do anything if your hands are tied?”

From Texas, 51-year-old Wes Brummett thinks the economy

will improve eventually - but it may be up to his grandchildren to do it. Obama, this Democrat says, seems like an all-right guy and a good dad, but “he needs to show more leadership.” “People are getting disheartened,” says Brum-mett, a self-employed computer systems administrator.

On the cusp of his sixth year in office, Obama is far removed from those heady days before his first inau-guration, when two-thirds of Ameri-cans predicted he’d be an outstanding or above-average president.

Now, 31 percent think he’s been outstanding or above av-erage, a quarter size him up as average, and 42 percent describe his presidency as below average or poor.

Davos - Japan on Wednesday told the world it must stand up to an increas-ingly assertive China or risk a regional conflict with catastrophic economic consequences. In a landmark speech to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe issued what amounted to an appeal for international support in a potentially explosive dispute with its superpower neighbour over islands in the East China Sea.

“We must restrain military expansion in Asia ... which otherwise could go unchecked,” Abe told the annual meeting of global business and political leaders, which Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is due to attend on Friday. “If peace and stability were shaken in Asia, the knock-on effect for the entire world would be enormous,” Abe added. “The dividend of growth in Asia must not be wasted on military expansion.”

Although Abe did not explicitly mention China, his speech had been flagged up in advance by Japanese officials as an alarm call to an influential audience over what Tokyo sees as bullying by Beijing.

The dispute over the uninhabited but potentially mineral-rich islands is being played out against a backdrop of Japanese fears that China is seeking to exert control over lifeline shipping lanes around its vast coastline and that the United States’ commitment to guarantee Japan’s security is waning. Ten-sions over the islands, which Japan calls Senkaku and China refers to as the Diaoyus, have come perilously close to boiling over into armed clashes on several occasions in recent years.

They resurfaced last month when Abe visited the Yasukuni shrine, a memo-rial to Japan’s war dead which is controversial because a handful of convicted war criminals are among those commemorated. China and South Korea seized on the visit as fresh evidence of Japan’s perceived failure to sincerely repent for its 20th-century record of military aggression, and the visit has also been criticised as unhelpful by Britain and the United States.

Asked about the visit here, Abe said his “praying for the souls of the departed” should be regarded as “something quite natural for a leader of any country in the world” while emphasising he had no intention of hurting Chi-nese or Korean feelings. Much of Abe’s speech was given over to a review of the progress of “Abenomics”, his bid to end two decades of deflation which he said was on the verge of bearing fruit.

Describing Asia as a region of limitless potential and the engine driving world economic growth, Abe urged China to join a revitalised Japan in creating systems to prevent disputes from destroying their mutual prosperity.

“Trust, not tension, is crucial for peace and prosperity in Asia, and in the rest of the world,” he said. “This can only be achieved through dialogue and the rule of law, and not through force or coercion.”

Japan wants China to agree to share details of its military spending, help set up a mechanism for managing crises and establish channels of commu-nication between the two countries’ armed forces.

WASHINGTON - Taking stock of President Barack Obama at the five-year mark in his term, less than a third of Americans consider him to be an above-average chief executive. Nearly twice as many find him likable. A new Associated Press-GfK Poll finds the president’s personal image to be on the rebound after taking a hit during the government shutdown late last year, with 58 percent now sizing him up as very or somewhat likable. That’s up 9 percentage points from October, just after the shutdown.

Bali PostTABANAN - Implementation of the ogoh-ogoh (papier mâché demon)

parade on pengerupukan or a day before Nyepi celebration in Tabanan is threatened not to be held. It is based on consideration that Nyepi feast day is ahead of the execution of legislative election which is feared to trigger a number of vulnerabilities, especially in the matter of security.

To affirm the matter, the county leadership council (Muspida) even had issued an appeal in order that the ogoh-ogoh parade for this year could be nullified in particular to maintain the security of Tabanan so that it remained conducive ahead of the legislative election 2014.

Commander of the 1619/Tabanan Military District Rudi Hermawan when met on Wednesday (Jan 22) said the implementation of legislative election was just nine days after the Nyepi. So, when any friction occurred the issue would be feared to extend until the day of the election.

“If possible, the ogoh-ogoh parade should not be held this year because the moment is very close to legislative election. It is feared that if any friction happens it will extend up to the implementation of the election,” he said.

He said the appeal had also been discussed at the level of the county leadership council and it just needed to be forwarded to subdistrict leadership council. “If any customary village insists on holding the ogoh-ogoh parade, the security responsibility will surely be bestowed to chief of customary village and its pecalang or customary security guard, while we as military element and police will just be backing it up,” he said.

Meanwhile, Nyoman Wirna Ariwangsa, Regional Secretary of Tabanan, when met at separate location disclosed the same thing. According to him, the meeting of the County Leadership Council and the Customary Village Middle Assembly held on Tuesday (Jan 21) indeed called for in order the implementation of the ogoh-ogoh parade could be nullified this year.

“It is only limited to an appeal. If there are parties insisting on holding it, please go on. However, the security responsibilities are delegated to chief of customary village and its pecalang,” he said.

As observation of Bali Post on Penimbangan Beach on Wednesday (Jan 22), the tidal waves as high as four meters continued to hack the revetment of the temple on the north side. Concrete breakwater installed in front of the temple from the east to the west side began to disintegrate because of the tidal waves. If within the next few days the tidal waves continued to hack, the whole breakwater would possi-bly be damaged and washed away by the brunt of the waves.

Meanwhile, since the tidal waves happening four days ago, the Penimbangan Beach tourist area began to be no longer vis-ited by travelers. Most shanties of grilled corn traders on the beach were closed. Only one or two are still desperate to sell. In addition, the canoe and used tire rental ser-vice providers in the east of the Penimbangan Temple had also been closed since eight days ago. Canoe boards and used tires rented out to visitors began to be evacu-ated to a safer place. Similarly, small boats owned by fishermen to catch fish in the region were evacu-ated to a safer place, too.

A resident who also operated a canoe rental service business on Penimbangan Beach, Kadek Wisata aka Kadekan, said when met last Wednesday the tidal waves had begun to happen since four days ago precisely on enter-ing the full moon. Height of the waves reached four meters and when approaching late afternoon to the night the wave height even reached five meters. Blow of the waves destroyed the revetment of the Penimbangan Temple. He worried if within the next few days and when entering the Chinese New Year the wave height might be more than the current height. By all means, it would threaten the condition of the temple.

Even, the seawater had started to inundate the temple area and his shop yard was crashed by seawater. Luckily, the seawater did not inun-date because the courtyard was still bordered with beach sand. “These big waves have been taking place for four days. Later on Chinese New Year the waves will be larger and very much threatening the temple. Now, the breakwater has been destroyed,” he said.

On the other hand, Wisata said that since the tidal waves engulfed, he had been closing the canoe and used tire rental service business that he ran with his wife.

Dozens of canoe board and used tires usually rented to visitors had been evacuated to a safer place. It was intended to avoid the brunt of tidal waves that could sweep the canoe board. No local visitors made a visit because they knew it had entered the season of bad weather. Due to this condition, he lost his daily income and it was predicted to last up to several weeks.

Despite the tidal waves increas-ingly raged, he was reluctant to take refuge to a safer place. He ad-mitted that he was used to dealing with the wave height as happened today. In addition, he wanted to keep his equipment because if they were left to take refuge, the equipment could be stolen or in-deed washed away by tidal waves. “I will hold on here because these tidal waves regularly happen ev-ery year. While sleeping here, I can take care of my equipment,” he added. (mud)

DAVOS — The head of a lead-ing international economic body says the post-crisis period is likely to be a “cut-throat” business as ev-eryone tries to recover the ground lost during the last few years.

Angel Gurria, the secretary-general of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Devel-opment, said Wednesday that “ev-erybody’s going to try to recover the jobs they lost, the welfare well-being they lost, the exports they lost and they are going to recover it in the shortest period of time.”

In an Associated Press interview at the World Economic Forum, Gurria says the global recovery is “patchy” and that governments have to make sure the spoils are spread through society.

He says they have to leave room in their spending to help those that are “effectively victims of the crisis.”

The Bank of Korea said pre-liminary data showed that the economy expanded by 3.9 per-cent in the final quarter of 2013 over a year earlier, accelerating from the third quarter’s 3.3 per-cent. The growth was thanks to an increase in capital expenditure and exports.

From the previous quarter, the country’s gross domestic product increased 0.9 percent, slowing from the previous two quarters when it expanded 1.1 percent.

For all of 2013, the economy expanded 2.8 percent, matching the bank’s forecast. Capital ex-penditure declined for a second straight year but investment in the construction industry turned sharply higher and private con-sumption showed a steady gain. Export growth slightly acceler-ated from the previous year.

South Korea is on track to re-cover from 2012 when economic growth slowed to a three-year low. In 2013, the government introduced stimulus measures to boost the real estate market and an overall economic recovery.

The Bank of Korea said last week that the recovery will continue to pick up this year, predicting 3.7 percent expansion for the year.

There are still concerns that growth in South Korea is too reli-ant on big companies and is largely driven by the government spending rather than private industry.

Weak domestic demand and capital spending from companies are among the challenges. South Korea’s government has made boosting private businesses and domestic consumption as its pri-ority for this year.

If you pay a visit to temple or are conducting spiritual tour, do not be surprised if you find a Balinese traditional cake (jaja) assembled with a unique decora-tion. The cake of various shapes, sizes and colors arranged nicely describes the nature of life in the world. It is not a presentation of pure art, but a ritual means for Hindu community in Bali called sarad.

I Kadek Satria, a lecturer at the Faculty of Hinduism and Culture in the Hindu University of Indonesia (Unhi), said that sarad was ritual paraphernalia in the higher level symbolizing the rwa bhineda or basic dualism. It was made from flour batter in such a way so that the ingredients symbolizing the nature. The use of flour as the smallest part of rice had the meaning as seriousness of devotion.

The flour batter was kneaded and then shaped in accordance with the con-tent of this world. There were celestial bodies like the sun, moon, and stars. Similarly, there were also human being with all activities, plants like flowering plants, large trees, medicinal trees and other small trees as well as two-legged animal, one-leg animal and animals having more legs. It was also described the heavenly life like the angles.

According to Kadek Satria, not all Hindu ceremonies in Bali used the sarad cake. The cake made like kayonan (mountain) was specially made for a grandiose ritual like padudusan agung used to purify nature. “It resembles kayonan as an aesthetic element symbolizing tattva (philosophy). Kayon is the beginning of story and literature,” he said.

Sarad was made by a particular person or artisan of the offerings. Meanwhile, the colors in use were adjusted the diverse colors of nature. In a grandiose ceremony, like padudusan agung, it was usually installed three days before the event or after the preparation of tawur offerings. Many people also installed it by consensus of the committee or in appropriate with the situation.

In the mapedudus ritual, it was presented along with sate tunggeh or sate tegeh. Afterward, the satay was then arranged to resemble how the sarad cake was prepared, but all the ingredients were made from pork. The satay was ar-ranged in such a way and had a meaning. At the bottom, there was a pig’s head as a symbol of rajas (preservation).

Sate tunggeh symbolized rajas while sarad symbolized sattva (creation). With the balance of sattva and rajas, the ritual was considered to be successful and ended properly. Behind the sate tunggeh was usually put different types of offerings such as bagia pala kerti and penyegjeg symbolizing the content of nature presented by devotees to God.

Kadek Satria said the philosophy of sate tunggeh was actually describing human life where it was completed with three qualities affecting the human life itself known as tri gunas consisting of sattva (creation), rajas (preservation) and tamas (destroyer). Each guna existed in every human being, so that they were symbolized in the offerings. “By balancing sattva, rajas and tamas, it is believed that people can have reunion with God,” he explained.

Kadek Satria affirmed that when sattva, rajas and tamas attained balance, it would result in a good citta (heart, mind). “Here, we will be in balance called citta wretti nirodha, which means that with a balanced mind we attain happi-ness,” he said.

According to Laksana, though his party so far had not owned a definitive result of research that mentioned the air pollution in Bangli, the condition could be proved by the high temperature in the region as well as in Kintamani and Pucak Penulisan that was no longer as cool as ever before.

“Although there is no research evidence, it can be felt. Air pol-lution causes the air temperature in Bangli to change. Theoreti-cally, it was stated that chemical exposure will flow from low pressure to the higher altitude. Meanwhile, the higher altitude area in Bali lies in the region of Bangli,” said Laksana.

Apart from the evidence in the form of air temperature, accord-ing to Laksana, the other effect

of air pollution in Bangli was evidently seen from the condi-tion of trees that did not grow well. He exemplified the condi-tion of coconut tree growing at this time was not as good as the condition before the 1998s. For-merly, a coconut tree could bear around 11-15 fruits, while today it could only produces about 5-6 fruits. “We can see it as physical evidence,” he said.

According to him, the contrib-uting source of such air pollution was the increasing number of motor vehicles in Bali. Results of the combustion gases of motor vehicle could become the main trigger of pollution. In addition, it was also caused by the air con-ditioning, refrigeration, and gas combustion of plants.

Related to such condition, ac-cording to Laksana, the solution to be taken was by minimizing the air pollution occurred through greening movement. Aside from planting trees, the making of holes by bio-pore as absorbent and water supply reservoir was highly feasible to hold back water. Thus, they would indirectly keep the air temperature cool.

Not only that, he also hoped that all local governments in Bali including the provincial govern-ment could jointly tackle the phe-nomenon of temperature increase. “Indeed, at this time we are insep-arable from technology. However, to suppress the condition can be resolved by going green such as increasing the number of existing trees,” said Laksana. (ina)

BANGLI - Bangli County in fact becomes a highly vulnerable region to air pollution. It happens because the geographical condition of Bangli region is located on highland. One of the real evidences showing Bangli has been polluted is the existence of the increase in temperature in Kintamani where it can be directly perceived that the air is no longer cool as ever before. It was stated by the Head of Bangli Environment Agency, Gusti Laksana, Wednesday (Jan 22).

According to an eyewitness Priyo Priyono, the accident took place at 6 a.m. local time, when the railroad crossing gate closed to make way for “Prameks” train that was heading for Solo.

The gate then opened seconds after the first train passed the cross-ing, and tens of motorcycles started to move went across through the crossing.

All of a sudden, a Senja Utama train, bound in the opposite direc-tion, hit four motorists that were already halfway through the cross-ing.

“After the Prameks train passed, the crossing gate remained open, when suddenly, another train from the opposite direction came and hit the four motorists,” Priyo ex-plained.

Priyo stated that he had tried to stop the motorists who were cross-ing the railroad but it was too late; four motorists were already on the other track.

“I tried to prevent them from crossing, but the motorists from the other side were insistent on crossing the railroad,” Priyo re-instated.

The four casualties have been identified as Purwanti, a Somo-daran village resident, Sumardi, a Kanoman village resident, Latifa a student from Kronggahan Vil-lage and Fikri Yuda,a student from Temuhu Lor.

Sleman police chief Adjuct Senior Police Commissioner Iksan Amin stated that the police is still investigating the incident to define the cause of the accident, whether it was a human or a technical error.

“We are still investigating this accident and nothing can be re-vealed as yet,” Iksan noted.

JAKARTA - Indonesia’s first lady apologised Wednesday to her hundreds of thousands of Instagram followers after a series of angry outbursts on the smartphone photo-sharing service.

Ani Yudhoyono has attracted around 310,000 followers since joining In-stagram in April but has regularly caused a stir by lashing out at people who post critical comments under her photos, many of which are of her family.

But on Wednesday she sought to turn over a new leaf with her followers on the Facebook-owned service, apologising and urging people to continue sharing “stories and memories”.

“I would like to thank all my followers for their encouragement, support and interactions on my Instagram account,” the 61-year-old wrote on her ac-count, beside a picture of a white flower.

“If I had said anything that seemed offensive or unfavorable to some of my followers, then I do apologize. Let us continue to share our stories and memories through photographs on Instagram.”

Her latest outburst was just last week after someone criticised her for posting a photo of her grandson, saying she should instead be focusing her attention on floods striking many parts of the country.

“Why is the anger directed at me?” she wrote, saying people should also be asking what the wife of the Jakarta governor was doing as floods engulfed the city.

Last year she was upset when someone posted a comment critical of a picture of her and her family posing on a beach wearing traditional Indonesian “batik” shirts.

The poster said the shirts, considered formal attire, were not the right choice for a day out at the beach.

“Your comment is so stupid,” Yudhoyono responded angrily. Her apology had attracted more than 4,000 likes and 300 comments within

JAKARTA — An investigation of an former chief justice who was arrested on suspicion of receiving a $250,000 bribe has found that he has more than $16 million in assets, including 33 cars and 31 motorcycles, the graft com-mission said Wednesday.

Commission spokesman Johan Budi said the assets were confiscated from former Constitutional Court Chief Justice Akil Mochtar. He said Mochtar will have to prove they were not acquired through corruption at his trial.

Mochtar’s arrest last October on charges of accepting bribes to fix the results of two local elections shocked the country because the Constitutional Court is one of the two highest courts, alongside the Supreme Court.

The opulence will add to a belief among Indonesians that outgoing Presi-dent Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has done little to solve the corruption that plagues the country’s government, Parliament and legal system. Yudhoyono is legally barred from seeking a third term in elections in July, but opinion polls say his party is likely to perform poorly.

Investigators earlier said they recovered cash stashed in the walls of a karaoke room in Mochtar’s official residence.

Mochtar’s lawyer Tamsil Sjoekoer said much of the money and property was acquired before his client became a judge in 2008, when he was a par-liamentarian. He also said the money hidden in the karoke room was profits from a fish farm, not corruption.

“We cannot do anything right now, but will complain later at the trial,” he said, adding that it was due to open early next month.

increased consumption cannot be sufficiently overcome by the production alone, an official stated.

“Most of our oil and gas supply is almost exhausted but we have been acting so far as if we still had a lot of oil and gas resources,” Secretary of the Upstream Oil and Gas Regulator Special Task Force (SKKMigas) Gde Pradnyana stated during a discussion on “Indonesia’s Oil and Gas Sovereignty 2014” on Wednesday evening.

Therefore, he noted that oil and gas exploration remains necessary because the remaining reserve is now only about 3.6 billion barrel.

“The volume of our oil and gas reserves is very limited, and therefore we have to make an all out campaign for intensive ex-ploration to increase the existing reserves,” Gde explained.

But he also pointed out that the exploration activity at pres-ent is facing three major obsta-cles, namely licensing, taxation and legal certainty.

“Taxation remains unsettled, while licensing is the matter of bureaucracy and thus inves-tors are required to go through around 281 kinds of licensing before starting to invest in In-donesia,” he remarked.

The largely peaceful protest against Yanukovych’s decision to shun the EU and turn toward Mos-cow in November descended into vi-olence Sunday when demonstrators, angered by the passage of repressive laws intended to stifle the protest, marched on official buildings.

For days protesters hurled fire bombs and stones at police, which re-taliated with stun grenades, tear gas and rubber bullets. The Wednesday deaths of two protesters — the first fatalities in more than two months of protests — fueled fears of more violence.

Police on Wednesday tore down barricades and chased the protesters down the hill from official buildings,

but demonstrators later set hundreds of tires ablaze and regained their positions under plumes of heavy smoke helped by the wind blowing in the police direction.

Tensions were high Thursday, amid reports of abduction of activ-ists by police, but police and dem-onstrators, separated by the wall of smoke, refrained from any decisive action.

The three main opposition leaders, who addressed the crowds on Kiev’s main Independence Square after meeting the president on Wednesday vowed to lead the demonstrators in battles with police if their demands are not met. If Yanukovych doesn’t concede, “tomorrow we will go for-

ward together. And if it’s a bullet in the forehead, then it’s a bullet in the forehead, but in an honest, fair and brave way,” declared one of them, Arseniy Yatsenyuk. On Wednesday, riot police beat and shot at protest-ers, volunteer medics and journalists. The Interior Ministry said 70 protest-ers were arrested.

The United States responded by revoking the visas of Ukrai-nian officials linked to violence and threatened more sanctions. But it also condemned the extreme-right radical protesters for their aggres-sive actions. The EU condemned the violence and said it was also consid-ering action against the Ukrainian government.

NEW YORK - A fire raged at a biodiesel complex after an explosion that was felt miles away in northern Mississippi on Wednesday, a county sheriff dispatcher said, and while there were no reports of injuries, it was unclear whether all workers were accounted for. The dispatcher for the Sheriff of Union County, who declined to be named, said the fire began at about 5:30 a.m. CST (1130 GMT) after an explo-sion that she herself felt.

Earlier, the Mississippi Highway Patrol said the blaze was so hot, firefighters could not get close enough to fight it. The dispatcher said the fire was still burning at 9:30 a.m. CST. The complex lies by the Mississippi Highway 15 about 4 miles north of New Albany, a town of about 8,500 residents.

“There were workers at the plant but it is unclear if there are any injuries,” Highway Patrol spokesman Trooper First Class Ronny Hall was quoted by the Associated Press as saying. “Once the fire is out, investigators will get in there.” Hall said two businesses nearby had been evacuated. The dispatcher said a portion of the highway had been closed too.

Biodiesel refineries make fuel from a variety of non-petroleum products such as vegetable oil or animal fats. The Highway Patrol said it did not know the name of the facility.

Biodiesel Magazine and directory websites list North Mississippi Biodiesel Inc as a biodiesel company operating close to New Albany and Google maps places the plant on Highway 15 close to New Albany.

A telephone number listed for the plant appeared to be disconnected and Reuters was unable to immediately locate plant officials. Both the dispatcher and the Highway Patrol said they did not know the name of the facility.

“We are optimistic that tourist arrivals (from China) will increase, especially with direct flights from China to tour-ism destinations in Indonesia. The flights will be offered by Hainan Airlines on a new route from Beijing to Denpasar in Bali starting January 15, 2014,” said secretary to the tourism market Directorate General I Gusti Ngurah Putra.

According to Gusti, Hainan Airlines flights from Beijing to Bali will arrive by Boeing 767-300 ER with a capacity of 223 passengers three times a week. These flights will increase tourist arrivals from China, which has been targeted for 970,000 people.

Ngurah Putra stated that in 2013, some 800 thousand Chinese tourists came to Indonesia, being part of 8.7 mil-lion tourist arrivals targeted by the Indonesian government last year.

Meanwhile, in 2014 the government set a target of 9.2 million tourist arrivals, with 970,000 from China.

Tourism minister Mari Elka Pangestu paid a visit to China in November 2013 to promote “Wonderful Indonesia” with the Government of Fujian Province in an effort to improve relations through the “sister province” (Central Java-Fujian) and “Sister Cities” (Surabaya-Fuzhou and Chengzhou-Palembang) programs.

Most of the Chinese tourists who visited Indonesia chose Bali as their holiday destination, Ngurah Putra stated.

The results of a poll in Beijing “People’s Broadcasting 2011”, showed that Bali is one of the world’s 10 favorite tourist destinations among the Chinese, in addition to Australia, Cape Town, Edinburgh, Hawaii, Madrid, Egypt, Niagara Falls, Paris, and Switzerland. (kmb27)

KIEV, Ukraine — Thick black smoke from burning tires engulfed parts of downtown Kiev as an ultimatum issued by the opposition to the president to call early election or face street rage was set to expire with no sign of a compromise on Thursday. The three main opposition leaders urged protesters late Wednesday to refrain from violence for 24 hours until their ultimatum to President Viktor Yanuk-ovych expires. They demanded that Yanukovych dismiss the government, call early elections and scrap harsh anti-protest legislation that triggered the violence.

Cliff Temple of TegallinggahIBP

GIANYAR - As a culture reserve, the Cliff Temple of Tegallinggah is one of the historic tourist attractions. Located at Tegallinggah, Bedulu village, Blahbatuh, Gianyar, this ancient site is also adjacent to the Pak-erisan River currently including in the world cultural heritage. To reach the location, it will take visitors ap-proximately 30 minutes from the capital of Denpasar by motor vehicle. When going to this object, visitors will pass through dozens of stairs with a view of fish

and shrimp ponds adorned with lotus plants and water lettuce. Splashing waters along the stairs make the atmosphere very cool. Meanwhile, large trees and hanging roots make the panorama look beautiful.

Uniqueness of this ancient site is visible on the temple carvings attached to the cliff wall. On the wall sit two very ancient temples. Each temple has three phalli symbolizing the gods of trinity namely Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. On the same rock, precisely on the right part of the temple there are 4 niches and 3 others on the left. Besides, there are also

8 niche of larger size. In the meantime, 3 additional niches can be found at the location separated by the Pakerisan River.

Around the temple can be found some ruins of temples that have been damaged by objects. Then, there is a cave and place to deliver canangsari obla-tion. Some showers can also be found here where they are used for religious ceremonies and melukat or self-purificatory rite. At the shower, visitors can wash the face just to feel the freshness of the falling water on the sidelines of the cliff.

Even Li’s electric start was put in the shade by Cibulkova’s en-ergetic performance against fifth seed Radwanska, who barely got going before she was ushered off Rod Laver Arena a 6-1 6-2 loser. Slovakian Cibulkova has never been so far at a grand slam before and will be joined as a first time finalist by Tomas Berdych or Stan-islas Wawrinka after the first men’s semi-final later on Friday.

With top three seeds - Ser-ena Williams, defending cham-pion Victoria Azarenka and Maria Sharapova - all victims of upsets, Li knows she will rarely have a bet-ter chance of adding another grand slam title to her 2011 French Open crown. “I think is the third time, so I’m pretty close to the trophy,” Li said. “I’ll try and enjoy it and stay healthy.”

The 31-year-old, who blessed her luck after facing match point against Lucie Safarova in the third round, set off at a blistering pace by winning 20 of the first 23 points to take a 5-0 lead in just 14 min-utes. It could not last and the 19-year-old Canadian broke and held for 5-2 before Li upped her game again and wrapped up the first set with a forehand volley

The second set was an alto-gether tighter affair with Bouchard

grabbing an early break early but the Chinese has shown this year that is made of sterner stuff than the sometimes mentally fragile Li of years previous.

Her serve remained solid as she ramped up her accurate ground-strokes and added another 22 win-ners to the 13 she smashed in the opening stanza to seal the victory in 86 minutes. “I think beginning of the match I played very well,” said Li. “The second set was a little bit tighter because I was feeling that I already had one foot in the final.”

A DREAM

Bouchard, the world number 31, paid tribute to Li’s performance and again reiterated that she had not been surprised to reach her first grand slam semi-final. “I wouldn’t say I exceeded my expectations, but I’m happy with how I did,” the former Wimbledon junior champion said. “I’ve slowly been making my way up. I don’t want to stop here. I want to keep going.

“I feel like I belong in the top levels of the game.” Cibulkova lay down on the court and kicked her legs in air in delight after her quick-fire victory over Radwanska that made her the first Slovakian woman

to reach a grand slam final. The 24-year-old has been on fire

at Melbourne Park this year, bely-ing her lowly seeding by upsetting Sharapova and doling out a string of thrashings as she made her way to the last four. The diminutive 20th seed scuttled around the Rod Laver Arena feasting on the Pole’s second serve and blasting winners from both sides.

She grabbed three breaks of serve to take the first set with a crunching backhand winner and was celebrat-ing her victory just 33 minutes later when Radwanska netted.

“It’s like a dream. It’s some-thing so unbelievable,” she said. “I was 100 percent ready for it and I was just doing what I had to do. That’s why I won. “It wasn’t easy, because against her you have to earn every point, you have to do the right thing, and that’s what I did.”

Radwanska was as bad on Thursday as she had been bril-liant in beating double defending champion Azarenka on Wednes-day and blamed the effort of winning her quarter-final for her lacklustre display. “I think I feel like in slow motion today. I had a couple tough matches, especially yesterday. I think I was not fresh enough,” she said.

SAN ANTONIO — Oklahoma City took over as top dog in the NBA’s Western Conference by winning 111-105 at nearest rival San Antonio on Wednesday, as Kevin Durant continued his remarkable scoring run. The Thunder moved half a game ahead of the Spurs in the West, while the overall league leader Indiana suffered its heaviest defeat of the season at the hands of Phoenix.

Among other games, Charlotte ended a run of outs against the Los Angeles Clippers, and DeMar DeRozan starred in Toronto’s victory against Dallas. Durant had 36 points — he is averaging 38 over his past 11 games — with two thirds of those coming after San Antonio lost its top defensive stopper Kawhi Leonard to a hand fracture late in the first half.

Reggie Jackson had 27 points and Serge Ibaka added 14 points for the Thunder. Tim Duncan and Boris Diaw scored 14 points each and Duncan added 13 rebounds for the Spurs.

Phoenix cruised to a surprisingly comfortable 124-100 win over Indiana, with Gerald Green scoring 23 points against his former team to lead six Suns in double figures. Indiana, which has the NBA’s best record (33-8) and is the league leader in scoring defense and field goal percentage defense, gave up the most points it has all season, losing its first game in six.

Goran Dragic scored 21 for the Suns, who moved within a game of idle Golden State in the Pacific Division. Paul George scored 26 for the Pacers, whose lead in the East was cut to 3-1/2 games. Charlotte ended a run of six consecutive losses to Los Angeles by beating the Clipper 95-91, with Al Jefferson having 24 points and 10 rebounds.

The veteran center was 12 of 23 from the field, while Gerald Henderson scored 13 points and put the Bobcats ahead for good with 22.5 seconds left with a dunk.

Blake Griffin was dominant early on and finished with 27 points for the Clippers, but was 0 for 4 from the field in the fourth quarter. Toronto’s DeMar DeRozan scored a career-high 40 points to power the Raptors to a 93-85 comeback win over Dallas.

Cibulkova stands tall to set up Li final

MELBOURNE - China’s Li Na swept past teenager Genie Bouchard into her third Australian Open final and dynamo Dominika Cibulkova joined her by humbling Agnieszka Radwanska as Melbourne Park served up two lop-sided semi-finals on Thursday. Li, who has lost two of the last three finals, got off to a flier in her match against Bouchard but the Canadian stalled her progress in the second set before succumbing 6-2 6-4.

Milan had given Seedorf a winning debut by beating Hellas Verona 1-0 in Serie A on Sunday and made a flying start to the tie when Mario Balotelli tapped in from close range after six minutes.

Milan failed to build on their early goal and Udinese levelled with a penalty converted by Colombian forward Luis Muriel four minutes before halftime following Urby Emanuelson’s clumsy tackle on Silvan Widmer. Udinese looked far more dangerous after halftime and were only prevented from going ahead by

a dreadful double miss midway through the second half.

Substitute Maxi Pereira scuffed his shot in front of a gaping goal, then man-aged to scramble it back to Muriel who also miscued from a good scoring posi-tion. Lopez showed them how it should be done when he collected the ball just inside the Milan half, surged forward and fired his shot into the corner. Milan, 11th in Serie A, had no answer and trudged off after writing another chapter in a dismal season.

BERLIN - Leaders Bayern Munich must quickly ditch any lingering holi-day spirit or risk a bumpy Bundesliga restart at Borussia Moenchengladbach on Friday, midfielder Thomas Muel-ler warned. The Bavarians suffered a surprise 3-0 defeat to Austria’s Salzburg in a friendly last week and Mueller said the result was proof that the runaway leaders needed to up the tempo against Gladbach.

“Gladbach will make our lives very difficult,” Mueller said on Thursday. “We have to snap out of that holiday atmosphere because there are three points up for grabs.” “Saturday’s defeat was good in a way because it showed us that with just half of our commitment you cannot achieve anything,” said the Germany inter-national.

Bayern stormed into a seven-point Bundesliga lead over second-placed Bayer Leverkusen and a further 11 from third-placed Gladbach before

the traditional break in December. Borussia Dortmund are a further point behind in fourth.

They are through to the Champions League Last 16 where they will face English leaders Arsenal as they seek to become the first club to win back-to-back titles. They are also on track to defend the German Cup.

Bayern coach Pep Guardiola will have to deal with some injury prob-lems, though, with Arjen Robben back in training in the last few days following a seven-week absence. “I am obviously not at 100 percent yet,” the 30-year-old Dutchman told report-ers on Wednesday.

SCHWEINSTEIGER MYSTERY

Holding midfielder Bastian Sch-weinsteiger is also still nursing an ankle injury and missed training this week, making his participation also doubtful and raising questions about his fitness for the rest of the season. The Germany international has failed

to hit top form this season, plagued by the nagging injury that required surgery last year and saw him miss the start of the season.

Gladbach will be a tough nut to crack, having set a string of club re-cords en route to a third-place finish at the start of the winter break. They have dropped just two points in their nine home games this season.

The five-times German champi-ons will be without defenders Tony Jantschke and Roel Brouwers but will have Spaniard Alvaro Dominguez back after he broke his shoulder in October.

“We are ready for Bayern,” said Dominguez, whose were unbeaten in eight games before the winter break. “We have been training hard and we are third in the league after all. We want to give Bayern in their own stadium a run for their money.” Le-verkusen, eager to remain on Bayern’s heels and secure second spot, travel to lowly Freiburg on Saturday.

LONDON — Juan Mata is edging closer to joining Manchester United from Chelsea as the Premier League champions try to strengthen their squad after a lackluster first half of the season. LONDON - Spain’s Real Madrid retained the title of the world’s richest soccer club in the past year thanks to sponsorship and TV deals robust enough to endure a season without a major trophy, a study showed on Thursday. Real’s revenue of 519 million euros ($704 million) put the club ahead of domestic rivals Barcelona in fiscal 2012/2013, with European champions Bayern Munich edging into third ahead of Manchester United, in the annual Football Money League compiled by accoun-tants Deloitte.

Qatari-owned Paris St Germain (PSG), where former England captain David Beck-ham ended his career last year, underlined its emergence as a soccer power with an 81 percent rise in revenue to almost 400 million

euros to claim fifth spot. Revenue for the top 20 teams rose by 8 percent to 5.4 billion euros, Deloitte said, underlining the appeal of soccer to broadcasters and sponsors targeting mass consumer markets.

Real Madrid and Barcelona are two of the most consistently successful teams in Europe, fielding top players such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi respectively. The two clubs enjoy the financial advantage of being able to negotiate their own TV deals, rather than pool-ing TV rights income as teams in other major leagues have to do.

Yet Spain’s TV rights model and the country’s economic crisis have left many of its smaller clubs facing a struggle to survive and demanding a bigger share of cash from broadcasters.

Speaking to Reuters this week, Barcelona

Vice President Carles Vilarrubi said only the bigger teams could deliver the kind of viewing figures TV companies demand. “It’s a question of balance because people want to watch Barca and Real Madrid and PSG and Bayern Munich games,” Vilarrubi said.

“We should equalise a little bit the income of the clubs but at the same time we should consider that the TV channels need to offer the games that people want to watch.”

POOR FORM

Manchester United won the English premier league for a record 20th time last year, but the team has struggled on the pitch this season and risks missing out on qualification for a place in the lucrative UEFA Champions League.

Despite the poor form, United are set for

a big rise in turnover as benefits roll in from improved English Premier League TV con-tracts and new sponsorship deals. The club is forecasting revenue for the current season of between 420 million pounds ($691.5 mil-lion) and 430 million, up from 363 million last season.

“Beyond 2013/14, consistent qualification for the Champions League is key in United challenging to regain top spot in the Money League, a position it last held in 2003/04,” said Deloitte’s Austin Houlihan.

PSG have used their new-found riches to sign players such as Swedish international Zla-tan Ibrahimovic and last May won the French league for the first time since 1994. “PSG are the fastest climber in this year’s Money League, claiming the highest-ever position for a French club,” said Houlihan.

BARCELONA, Spain — A Spanish judge agreed on Wednesday to hear a lawsuit brought by a Barce-lona club member against president Sandro Rosell regarding the cost of the transfer for Brazil striker Ney-mar. After a preliminary examina-tion of the contracts involved in Neymar’s signing, judge Pablo Ruz wrote in a ruling there is “sufficient elements for the admission of the lawsuit” brought by club member Jordi Cases.

On Monday, Rosell insisted the total cost of 57 million euros (then $74 million) to bring Neymar from Brazilian club Santos announced at the player’s presentation last June was correct.

Cases alleges the amount paid by the Spanish champions was higher and that Rosell misappropriated funds by hiding the real cost to the club behind false contracts, a crimi-nal offense punishable by up to six years of prison.

Cases told El Pais newspaper on Monday “the lawsuit is against Rosell, not against Barca.” “We don’t think that somebody kept the money,” Cases said. “We only want to know how they account for the expenditures, because it isn’t clear.”

Barcelona is owned by its more than 160,000 members, who elect a president and governing board.

Barcelona made 482.6 million euros ($654 million) in revenue last season, second only to fierce rival Real Madrid, according to accoun-tancy firm Deloitte. Rosell and other members of his board have repeat-edly said the contracts involved in Neymar’s transfer included confi-dentiality clauses that don’t allow them to reveal the exact amount of the 57 million euros received by Santos, and the three companies, DIS, TEISA and N&N, who owned shares of Neymar’s rights.

To proceed with the suit, Ruz asked that FIFA and the Brazilian football federation present documen-tation related to the Neymar transfer; Neymar da Silva Santos Junior provide the contract he signed with the company N&N, run by his father Neymar Silva Santos, that ceded it his “future economic rights”; and for Barcelona to hand over contracts for the payment of 7.9 million euros for the rights to three Santos “youth players” and the contracts for the payment of 9 million euros to play two friendlies with Santos. Rosell said Monday he would be willing to answer any questions Ruz might have regarding the deal.

The people spoke to The Associ-ated Press on condition of anonym-ity because the transfer is not being discussed publicly. United and its manager, David Moyes, would not take questions on Mata in the post-match news confer-ence after the team’s League Cup

semifinal defeat to Sunderland later Wednesday.

The 25-year-old Mata, Chelsea’s player of the year for the last two seasons, has fallen out of favor since Jose Mourinho returned as manager in June. He has not played for the team since the Jan. 1 victory against South-ampton. Chelsea pulled further away from United in the Premier League title race by beating Moyes’ side 3-1 on Sunday.

While Chelsea is third, just two points from the summit, United is seventh, 14 points behind leader Arse-nal. Moyes accepts there is a need to reinforce the squad, with Champions League qualification, by finishing in the top four, far from certain.

“I fully understand that sup-porters are keen to see us freshen up the squad with new faces, but January is a difficult month in which to bring people in,” Moyes said in Wednesday’s program for the League Cup semifinal against Sunderland. “While we are actively scouting players all the time, a lot of the work we are doing now is preparation for the summer.

“If we can do any business now then we will certainly try to do it, but I will not compromise the standards required for a player that can come into this club and help improve it.”

and shrimp ponds adorned with lotus plants and water lettuce.

Her apology had attracted more than 4,000 likes and 300 comments within

an hour of it being posted Wednesday. She is not he only member of her family active on social media -- President

(ina)

(mud)

bangan Temple, Singaraja, has now been destroyed by the brunt of tidal waves since a few days ago. Besides, the tourist attraction at this location has also been closed since eight days before. The traders running a business at this object preferred to close because tidal waves reaching the height of four meters kept hacking.

“Based on the experience of previous years, the cel-ebration of Chinese New Year is indeed a significant effect on Chinese arrivals to Bali,” said a member of the Indonesian Tourism Promotion Board (BPPI), Mangku Nyoman Kandia, when asked for his confirmation.

He said that his party would make an effort in order the visit of Chinese travelers to Indonesia and Bali could increase as the expectation of the government. The BPPI as the promotion partner of the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy should undertake a breakthrough.

“Even though Bali has been widely known by Chinese travelers, Indonesia is also still doing a direct promotion to China. This year, we will hold a promotion to cities in China. The cities targeted will be surely the emerging

cities, beyond Beijing and Shanghai,” he said.According to him, the cities of China whose economy

was growing posed potential tourist market for Indonesia and Bali. For instance, Shenzhen City should have be-come the main concern of the government and tourism businesspeople in Bali. “From Shenzhen to Hong Kong only takes an hour by land transport. Then, they can fly to Bali just within 4.5 hours from Hong Kong,” he said.

He said the key to increasing the number of Chinese travelers visiting Indonesia lay in the intense cultural and economic diplomacy. Promotion of the new tourist destinations like Singkawang being famous for its festival ahead of the Chinese New Year celebration was also one of the ways to attract Chinese travelers.

As had been known, last year Indonesia renewed the cooperation in tourism sector with China. Renewal of the cooperation was marked by the signing of memorandum of understanding (MoU) for tourism cooperation between the two countries that had been signed since 2000. Re-newal of the agreement was assessed necessary pursuant to the rapid development of the two countries.

Renewal of the MoU and cooperation arrangement in the tourism sector would also be followed up with concrete action plan including joint promotions, share information, travel facilitation, capacity building as well as tourism investment in both countries.

is becoming the main market for Indonesian tourism and is prepared to make a significant contribution to tourist arrivals to Indonesia.
