During raids in several cities across Java island on Friday and Saturday, police arrested five mem-bers of an alleged extremist net-work and seized chemicals, labora-tory equipment and a flag inspired by the Islamic State group.

Among those arrested was Asep Urip, a 31-year-old teacher at an Islamic boarding school in Central Java, and his 35-year-old pupil Zaenal, whom police allege was being “groomed” to carry out an imminent attack.

“From early information, it’s known that Zaenal was a candidate for a suicide bombing in Jakarta to be conducted on New Year’s 2016,” stated police documents into the arrests seen by AFP.

A subsequent raid on the teach-er’s house uncovered a black flag inscribed with text “similar to an ISIS flag”, police said, referring to an acronym often used for the jihad-ist group controlling large swathes of territory in Iraq and Syria.

Elite anti-terror police detained the teacher and the student after swooping on two other men with connections both to the religious school and to expert bombmakers and radicals in other parts of Java.

One of those men, Iwan, had travelled to West Java this month with the intention of building a bomb, police allege.

A fifth man was arrested near the city of Semarang on Saturday, lead-ing to a raid on his home where a wide array of suspect materials was seized including laboratory equip-ment, chemical textbooks, fertiliser, buckshot and spikes.

Police said the nationwide op-eration -- the largest of its kind in Indonesia for some time -- was targeting an organised terror cell.

“These arrests were carried out because of indications these men were involved in a terrorist net-work,” police documents state.

The raids came just a month after Indonesia increased security at its airports after a threat was directed at one serving the capital Jakarta.

LOS ANGELES - Legendary film-maker Steven Spielberg, who began his career as an intern and then director at Universal Pictures, is returning to the studio under a series of partnerships announced on Wednesday.

Spielberg and his DreamWorks Studios will join Participant Media, Reliance Group and Entertainment One to create Amblin Partners produc-tion house.

Universal Pictures for its part will market and distribute the new com-pany’s films.

“We couldn’t be more pleased to be back in business with Steven,” said a joint statement by Jeff Shell, chairman of Universal Filmed Entertainment Group, and Donna Langley, chair of Universal Pictures.

“His iconic films have stood the test of time and are embraced by audiences

around the world.”Universal said it would market

four to seven Amblin Partners films each year, beginning with “The Girl on the Train”, starring Emily Blunt, in October 2016.

“The same magnet that pulled me to Universal when I first wanted to make movies is bringing me home again to this new exciting relationship,” Spielberg said. “It is my hope that we can make some more beautiful music together.”

While at Universal during the 1970s, Spielberg helmed such block-busters as “Jaws,” and “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial,” which helped establish him as one of Hollywood’s top names.

Spielberg’s films for the past six years have been distributed by Walt Disney Co. but that agreement was due to expire next August. (afp)

Following a record $57 million from Thursday night showings in North America, and packed matinees on Friday, the Walt Disney Co. projected that “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” will surpass $215 million on the weekend, besting the record domestic opening of “Juras-sic World,” which debuted with $208.8 million in June.

Such an outcome would surprise few analysts, but the numbers were nevertheless eye-popping. “The Force Awakens” was heading to-ward a Thursday night-Friday total of more than $120 million domesti-cally, said Dave Hollis, head of dis-tribution for Disney. The previous one-day high was $91.1 million set by “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” in 2011.

In such rarified territory, Disney has been cautious about overestimating the

box-office force of J.J. Abrams’ sev-enth chapter in George Lucas’ space saga. Based on the early response, many analysts have the film pegged for a weekend total closer to $250 million — far above “Jurassic World.”

Disney’s biggest worry has been that moviegoers will be too daunted by sold-out shows and long lines. More than $100 million advance tickets (also a record) were sold ahead of the opening of “The Force Awakens,” much of those going toward Thursday and Friday shows. Saturday and Sunday will depend more on traditional walk-up business. Hollis said exhibitors are continually adding more screenings to satisfy demand.

The international rollout for the film, made for about $200 million, has already brought in an estimated total of $72.7 million since opening

in a handful of countries Wednes-day. “The Force Awakens” is simul-taneously opening around the world just about everywhere but China, where it debuts in January.

It’s setting records overseas, too, including the biggest single day ever in the United Kingdom with an estimated $14.4 million on Thursday.

While “Star Wars” helped cre-ate the summer blockbuster, “The Force Awakens” is debuting in the holiday season of December, where the previous top opening was the $84.6 million debut of 2012’s “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.” By Disney’s estimates, “The Force Awakens” — the widest December opening ever with 4,134 theaters — blew past that number by Friday afternoon.

Imax and 3-D screenings are helping to propel the record gross. Disney said that 47 percent of the Thursday box office came from 3-D showings and $5.7 million from Imax screens. (ap)

LUANDA - US rapper and song-writer Nicki Minaj ignored interna-tional critics Saturday and performed at a concert linked to the family of Angola’s long-ruling President Jose Eduardo dos Santos.

The 33-year-old hip-hop star en-tertained several thousand of people at a Christmas concert in the Angolan capital Luanda despite calls from rights groups to cancel the tour, which they saw as an endorsement of the authoritarian rule of dos Santos.

The concert was hosted by the Angola’s largest mobile phone com-pany, which is part owned by the dos Santos family.

Before going on stage, Minaj posted a photo of herself in a jumpsuit and draped in the black-and-red flag of Angola on photo-sharing service Instagram.

Concert organisers said they had sold 6,000 tickets for the concert, which was held in the 12,000-seat Coqueiros Stadium where she shared the stage with several local acts.

Minaj had come in for criticism

for agreeing to perform, with Human Rights Foundation president Thor Hal-vorssen saying this week that she had “no good reason... to do business with the corrupt Angolan dictatorship and endorse the ruler’s family company”.

Jeffery Smith of the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights centre also accused Minaj of “following in the footsteps of Mariah Carey, callously taking money from a dictator”.

Fellow US singer Carey was criti-cised in 2013 for performing in front of dos Santos, who has governed the southern African nation for 36 years.

Smith said dos Santos had mounted a “sustained crackdown on basic human rights” arresting activists, op-position members, journalists, as well as musicians.

Minaj performed a day after a judge ordered the release of 15 Angolan activists, including prominent rapper Luaty Beirao, who were arrested six months ago during a book reading where one of the books on the agenda was about non-violent resistance to repressive regimes. (afp)

BEFORE becoming a tourist desti-nation, Bali was almost entirely driven by agriculture. During a large scale rice planting program that took place in Penatih village East Denpasar recently, Commander of the 163/

being an international tourist destination,

Bali must nonetheless maintain its agricultural sector in order to ensure food security.

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

has also organized the planting of the cigeulis variety of rice at Subak Munggu in Mengwi, Coherang rice at Subak Ta-nah Putih, in Darmasaba vil-lage, Abiansemal, and at Subak Banyu Kuning, Padangsambian Klod village, West Denpasar. “The government program of mass rice planting that is tak-ing place today is conducted in collaboration with the 163/Wira Satya Military Resort, and is specifically designed to support food sovereignty. We must act quickly to ensure self-sufficient rice production. This program is also aimed at accelerating economic development and people’s welfare, as food is a problem around the world,” said Cantiasa.

In fact the Military Resort and the Military district con-ducted mass rice planting all over Bali, covering some 8, 543 hectares in eight districts and one municipality. “The Badung Military District Command has been working with the govern-ment, stakeholders and the public to plant rice for the last two weeks,” he said.

The Military Resort and Mili-tary District field extension offi-cers (PPL) and TNI soldiers also provide mentoring and guidance to farmers so that food-self suffi-ciency can be achieved. Accord-ing to the Commander Cantiasa, guidance and assistance from the Agricultural Agency’s extension officers and the army is needed in order to fill in the gaps of knowl-edge that the farmers have. “We are speeding up the processes of food self-sufficiency, start-ing from seed nurseries and the planting process to fertilizer dis-tribution and harvest verification and even tractor usage. We are optimizing available resources to maximize the results. This assistance has proved itself effi-cient with previous harvest yields increasing from seven tons to ten tons,” he said.

Assistance will continue to be provided -especially to farmers, in order to speed up the devel-opment of food security, with the hope that food sovereignty can be achieved soon, he said. National security will thus also be achieved, making the nation stronger in the face of interfer-ence and threats such as are ex-perienced by many parts of the

world today including threats to energy, food and water.

As for the issue of water, Cantiasa admitted that this issue remains a challenge, especially after this year’s long dry season that caused many areas to be un-able to grow crops. He explained that as soon as those areas get rain, the Army will help them work on their paddy fields with the simultaneous planting tech-niques, whose results will be known after harvest.

The commander also revealed some of the efforts being made by the government, especially the military to resolve some of the nations problems, specifi-cally related to the welfare of the people and food sovereignty. The TNI (Indonesian military) monitors fertilizer distribution to make sure that there is no interference by those wanting to make unscrupulous profits. Most importantly, continued Cantiasa, the TNI is carriying out an insurance program for farmers, covering them in the case of crop failure so that farm-ers will not be afraid to plant rice in the rainy season and in the dry season. “Farmers pay a premium of just IDR 35,000 per hectare and, should they experience crop failure, they are compensated IDR 6 million,” he explained.

Regional Secretary of Den-pasar, Rai Iswara, accompanied by the Head of the Denpasar Agriculture Agency, Ambara Putra, conveyed that the simul-taneous planting conducted at Subak Umalayu on the area of 25 hectares, applied the Jajar Legowo system and so the subak members received a reward in the form of free fertilizer. “They get 200 kilograms of fertil-izer per hectare,” said Ambara Putra.

There are 218 paddy fields in Denpasar -spread across fourm subdistricts, that are insured for crop failure. “The municipal-ity of Denpasar is grateful for the commander of the Military Resort and Military District’s initiative that can help our farmers. He has shown remark-able synergy towards Denpasar and Bali in general. “We have the best production figures in Bali, despite only having small area of land to work with. This program is a great motiva-tion for famers, giving hope that the achievement of the central government’s goal of creating food self-sufficiency can be achieved,” said Iswara. (kmb36)

“For this reason, Aston Den-pasar Hotel & Convention Cen-ter is presented as hotel with the biggest convention facilities in Denpasar area. With a total of 14 meeting rooms, including Aston Grand Ballroom that caters up to 2.000 people,” said Astrid Prahitaningtyas, Pub-lic Relations Manager Aston Denpasar Hotel & Convention Center.

“Aston Denpasar Hotel & Convention Center offers a va-riety of meeting packages that tailored to suit several MICE activities, starting from Coffee Break package that lasted for 4 hours up to Full Board Meeting package that is fully packed with accommodation facilities of 4-star hotel. Each package is wrapped with comprehen-sive meeting and convention necessity, from mineral water to standard sound system, from candy to LCD projector, screen and also professionally prepar-ing a number of meeting room setup based on the requests,” Astrid added.

“We are very proud of our customers faith who conduct MICE activities, until now, Aston Denpasar Hotel & Con-vention Center is becoming a hotel with the best MICE facilities in Denpasar. These are some evidences from the

several large MICE events held, entrusted to us,” said Lilik Amini, the Director of Sales of Aston Denpasar Hotel

& Convention Center.“In addition to possessing a

variety of special MICE facili-ties, is also supported by a very strategic location, which conve-niently exist at the heart of Den-pasar, the MICE participants are simply able to reach a lot of tourist destinations in Bali,” Lilik Amini emphasized.

WITH THE EvEr growing population of Denpasar, comes an increase in the number of buildings that are going up. Agricultural lands are being converted into buildings and even some designated green belts are being built on. The green belt on Jalan Hang Tuah, Sanur for example has already seen open green spaces et covered by concrete buildings.

“Everyone should be concerned about this,” said Denpasar resident Wayan Kastama.

Some of the buildings have been there for some time, and there is even one that stands right behind a sign board put up by the government that states that this is a green belt area. “Entering the small lane, there are two sign boards on the East and West side that state that it is prohibited to build there, yet right behind the signs, there is a building that houses used goods and scrap metal,” said Kastama.

Kastama admitted that he did not know whether the status of the land had in fact been officially changed

or if it was still designated as an open green space but added that a road has even been paved there.

I.B. Ketut Kiana, a Denpasar House of Representatives legislator from Sanur Kaja, stated that in fact the area is still designated as a green open space with an allowed building coverage ration (KDB) of 0 percent. Therfore it is prohibited to have any buildings standing on this area. In response to the fact that there are buildings in the “green space,” Kiana said that the municipality of Denpasar should be urged to take immediate action.

“We hope that relevant agencies, particularly the Spatial Planning and Housing Agency can come down to monitor the situation,” he said.

According to Kiana, if land conversion are allowed to take place haphazardly, the Denpasar’s green spaces will obviously be greatly diminished. Many areas on Jalan Sedap Malam have already been converted. “The presence of the green belt on Jalan Hang Tuah need to be maintained. We ask relevant agencies to investigate,” said Chairman of the Hanura Faction in the Denpasar House of Representatives. (kmb12)

Officials at Disney, Universal and SeaWorld’s Florida theme parks said all three parks will be using metal detector screening for guests as they enter.

In addition, Disney is discontinuing the sale of toy guns at both its Florida and California parks and will no longer allow those items to be brought in.

The moves come at a time when many public venues worldwide are stepping up security efforts to thwart possible terror-ism or other attacks after recent violence in Paris and San Bernardino, California.

Disney will be randomly selecting guests for secondary screening but wouldn’t say how long the measures would be in place. Universal says its metal detector use is a test and won’t dis-cuss specific future plans. SeaWorld says guests can expect bag checks and wand metal detector checks.

“We continually review our compre-hensive approach to security and are implementing additional security mea-sures, as appropriate,” Disney said in an emailed statement.

Disney is also no longer allowing guests 14 years and older to wear cos-tumes into its parks. The change is to assist security personnel screen guests more effectively as they enter and while inside the parks.

Dan Gross, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, said in a statement that although the changes at the parks are being made with the safety of their guests in mind, it is disheartening that they have to be enacted.

“Now, families can’t even go to ‘The

Happiest Place on Earth’ to escape the realities of gun violence in this country,” Gross said.

Disney doesn’t broadly discuss spe-cifics about its security, but measures at Disney World have increased in recent weeks, in both visible and nonvisible ways for its visitors. There has been additional uniformed local law enforcement and spe-cially trained dogs patrolling key areas.

Universal spokesman Tom Schroder said in an email that its security changes will apply to both Universal Orlando Re-sort and Universal Studios Hollywood. He said that it is a test and not a response to any specific concern.

“We want our guests to feel safe when they come here,” he said in a statement. “This test is a natural progression for us as we study best practices for security in today’s world.”

Metal detectors have previously been used by Universal to screen guests dur-ing its annual Halloween Horror Nights haunted house attraction.

Six Flags theme parks already require all guests to pass through metal detectors and un-dergo bag checks, according to its website.

SeaWorld spokeswoman Becca Bides said it stays in close communication with law enforcement at all levels regarding lo-cal, regional, national and world events.

“The safety of our guests and team members along with the welfare of our animals have always been our top prior-ity,” SeaWorld said in a statement. “Like other major attractions and venues, we continually evaluate our existing compre-hensive security plans.” (ap)

“The incident indeed worried would-be tourists and could have left a bad impression if swift ac-tion had not been taken,” a tourism worker, Dewi Rai Budiasa, said on Saturday.

He said since swift action was taken to restore the situation, tour-ists and those desirous of visiting the island need not worry about se-curity conditions on the island, add-ing that the incident was confined to the Kerobokan penitentiary.

Fallout from such an incident could spread quickly across the world as international mass media have also reported it.

Dewa Rai praised the quick ac-tion taken by the government and the security agencies, including meeting leaders of the two orga-nizations to bring about peace and assuring that peace will prevail in the region.

He said all sides must exercise restraint and not point fingers at

each other. Instead, they should jointly usher in an atmosphere of brotherhood so that both domestic and foreign tourists can happily celebrate the New Year on the is-land.

He said it was very important to assure tourists of their security and safety as tourism was the economic backbone of many parties.

Four people died and five others were wounded following a clash between members of Laskar Bali and Baladika mass organizations at Kerobokan prison.

Dewa Rai said he hoped such an incident does not happen again lest

it damages the reputation of Bali as an island of a Goddess.

Police have named and arrested four people as suspects behind the incident.

“These four are being held at the resort police station,” head of the Badung police resort, Adjunct Senior Commission Tonny Binsar Marpaung, said on Saturday, add-ing, “We are still investigating other possible suspects.”

A clash broke out between pris-oners believed to be connected with the Laskar Bali and Baladika mass organizations at Kerobokan penitentiary in Badung district

at 4pm on Thursday, which later spilled over to Jalan Teuku Umar in Denpasar.

Two prisoners died in the clash while two other persons were found dead on Jalan Teuku Umar.

The Justice and Human Rights Ministry is investigating the inci-dent along with the police following the discovery of hundreds of sharp edged weapons and several guns in the prison.

Adjunct Senior Commissioner Tonny Binsar Marpaung said 200 grams of methamphetamine had also been found in one of the blocks in the prison. (ant)

DENPASAR - Police on Bali island said Friday they had seized hundreds of spears, machetes and arrows after fighting between gangs inside a prison and on the streets outside left four dead.

The brawl started late Thursday in Kerobokan jail, a high-security facil-ity on the resort island that houses many foreigners, where two inmates were killed and two others injured.

“There was a clash in prison involving the inmates, there were

stabbings,” Bali police chief Sug-eng Priyanto said.

One of those who died had seri-ous stomach wounds, while the other had cuts on his back, accord-ing to reports.

As members of Bali’s two big-gest gangs clashed inside the jail -- which is not far from areas popular with foreign tourists -- others on the outside arrived and demanded entry.

Police tried to disperse them but

the gang members ended up fighting on the streets in nearby Denpasar, the Balinese capital, where two oth-ers were killed and two injured.

All those killed and injured were Indonesian.

Bali police spokesman Heri Wiyanto told AFP that police had confiscated hundreds of spears, ma-chetes and arrows from the prison as well as from gang members outside the jail.

Police also transferred 59 inmates

linked to the gangs to other prisons on the island overnight and the two sides struck a deal to prevent a repeat of the violence, he said.

Kerobokan was still locked down Friday as police questioned more than 50 people. It is not yet clear what triggered the clash.

British grandmother Lindsay Sandiford, who was sentenced to death for drug smuggling, is await-ing the firing squad in Kerobokan while Australians from the “Bali

Nine” narcotics ring are also housed in the notorious jail.

Bali, a pocket of Hinduism in Muslim-majority Indonesia, is a popular holiday destination with foreigners due to its palm-fringed beaches and nightlife.

But the island has a darker side in the form of its violent gangs, who style themselves after military per-sonnel or members of biker groups, and sometimes clash violently on the streets. (afp)

Acting Director of Order and Safety at the Directorate General of Corrections for the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, Priyadi, said on Saturday (Dec. 19) that the troops involved in the raids consisted of six platoons of the Bali Police Riot Squad and Badung Police, one platoon from the mobile brigade and a platoon of military personnel from the 163/Wira Satya Military Resort. The raid took place over two days ending on Friday at midnite. The situation at the prison is now conducive to non-violence.

“Working with our colleagues at eh Together with Kerobokan Prison, we performed policing measures in order to improve the situation there,” he said.

Along with three firearms, an airsoft gun and bullets, Priyadi said that they were also able to secure hundreds of other weapons includ-ing savers, samurai swords, belts and knives during the raid on Fiday evening. They also confiscated many

usable and damaged mobile phones, while larger times such as electronic goods and such were entrusted to the ‘sonfisctated items storage (Ru-hasaan).

Priyadi explained that those found in possesion of the confiscated goods were being instigated by the police. On Friday night all the cells of the prison were raided again. Personnel of the 163/Wira Satya Military Resort were led by Commander I Nyoman Cantiasa. Personnel of the Badung Police were led by Chief Tony Bin-sar, who said that he hopes that these efforts will help to make the prison safer and more orderly.

“We cleaned up Block C last night and found sharp weapons under the floor in a small bunker 15 centimetres wide and 30 centimetres deep, that was covered with ceramic tiles,” said Priyadi. On the ceiling several packages of crystal meth were found with a total weight of 200 grams. The evidence was handed over to police

for further processing.According to Cantiasa, the prison

is miniature version of small com-

munities in Indonesia. What hap-pens inside, it also happening in our communities. “The Minister and

director general ordered us to conduct a thorough cleanup,” he affirmed. (kmb36)

MANGUPURA - Apparently the recent gang clashes are be-ing taken advantage of as a good time to clear Kerobokan Prison of various dangerous goods. The results of the shakedown on Friday night (Dec. 18) conducted by a joint team of police and army officers, yielded hundreds of weapons, firearms, an airsoft gun and approximately 200 grams of crystal meth. Clinton, the Democratic front-

runner, kept an eye on the general election, sharply criticizing Donald Trump’s plan to ban Muslims from entering the United States. She called the leader of the Republican race the Islamic State’s “best recruiter.”

“Mr. Trump has a great capacity to use bluster and bigotry to inflame people,” said Clinton, the former secretary of state.

Clinton and Sanders, her closest challenger, entered Saturday night’s debate in the midst of one of their fiercest fights — about the campaign itself rather than a national or inter-national issue. Clinton’s campaign accused Sanders’ team of stealing information used to target voters and anticipate what issues might motivate them. In response to the breach, the Democratic National Committee temporarily cut off Sanders’ team’s access to its own data, a move the Vermont senator said Saturday was an “egregious act.” Still, Sanders said his staff had acted improperly.

“This is not the type of campaign that we run,” he said. Sanders’ cam-paign fired a worker involved in the breach but also used the controversy to raise money, sending an email to supporters that said the national party had placed “its thumb on the scales in support of Hillary Clinton’s

campaign.” His campaign said after the debate it had suspended two more aides.

Clinton quickly accepted the apology Saturday night, saying “We should move on because I don’t think the American people are all that in-terested in this.”

The debate, lasting more than two hours, was the third for Democrats and was expected to have low view-ership given that it was scheduled on the last weekend before Christmas when many Americans have turned their attention to the holidays. It came as Clinton has solidified her standing atop the field, shaking off a rocky start and the controversy about her use of private email at the State Department.

Clinton and Sanders were joined on stage by former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, who has struggled to be a factor in the race. O’Malley was aggressive in seeking to play a role in the debate, repeatedly talking over moderators and accusing his rivals of having outdated views on foreign policy.

In a heated exchange on gun control, O’Malley accused both Clinton and Sanders of having a “flip-flopping, political approach” to the contentious issue. Clinton also de-fied moderators’ efforts to cut her off

at times, leading Sanders to call out, “Now this is getting to be fun.”

While there was broad agreement among the Democratic contenders that the U.S. should not launch a ground war to defeat the Islamic State, they differed in the tactics they would take and whether the nation should seek regime change in Syria, where IS has a stronghold.

Clinton recommended more direct action than her competitors, calling for a no-fly zone over part of Syria and insisting that the U.S. must seek to remove Syrian President Bashar Assad from power.

“If the United States does not lead, there is not another leader — there is a vacuum,” she said.

Sanders disagreed, saying the U.S. should first seek to defeat the Islamic State, calling Assad a “secondary issue” that should be dealt with over the course of years. “Yeah, regime change is easy, getting rid of dictators is easy,” Sanders said. “But before you do that, you’ve got to think about what happens the day after.”

All three candidates stressed work-ing more closely with Muslim-Amer-ican communities to tackle radicalism at home — a sharp difference from

the rhetoric of some Republican candidates. Returning to her focus on Trump, Clinton said, “If you’re going to put together a coalition in the region to take on the threat of ISIS, you don’t want to alienate the very countries you need to be part of the coalition.”

Sanders sought to stand out on foreign policy by noting that he voted against the 2003 invasion of Iraq, an unpopular war Clinton supported. He said he does not support any “unilat-eral military action” but rather a coali-tion in which the U.S. works hand in hand with Muslim nations to fight the radical militant group.(ap)

JERUSALEM — Israeli police say a Palestinian stabbed three Israelis in the central city of Raanana, seriously wounding one of them, before being shot and then arrested by Israeli secu-rity forces.

Police spokeswoman Luba Samri says a 20-year-old Palestinian man stabbed the Israelis on Saturday, in a rare attack on the Jewish Sabbath. An Israeli man was stabbed in the stomach and seriously wounded. Two women were lightly wounded.

It’s the latest incident in a three-month spree of near-daily Palestinian attacks on Israelis that have killed 20. At least 116 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire, of which Israel says 79 were assailants. The rest were killed in clashes with Israeli forces.

Israel blames incitement by political and religious leaders. Palestinians say the attacks stem from despair at not achieving statehood.(ap)

MANILA, Philippines — A Philippine military commander says a weeklong counterterrorism offensive in the country’s south has left 26 Abu Sayyaf gunmen and three soldiers dead and ended with the capture of a major jungle training camp of the militants.

Army Col. Rolando Joselito Bautista says the military is verify-ing intelligence reports that a Malaysian militant identified as Abu Anas may have been killed in the offensive that ended Sunday in the island province of Basilan.

Bautista said government forces were inspecting the captured Abu Sayyaf camp in Basilan’s Al-Barka municipality Sunday when one of five bombs placed around the camp exploded, wounding 12 soldiers. He said the camp was able to shelter more than 200 people.

U.S.-backed Philippine military offensives have weakened the Abu Sayyaf, but it remains a security threat. (ap)

US campaign: Sanders, Clinton move past rancor over breach

MANCHESTER, New Hampshire — U.S. Democratic presi-dential candidate Bernie Sanders apologized to Hillary Clinton and his own supporters Saturday night for a breach of her campaign’s valuable voter data, seeking to put the controversy to rest in a debate that quickly moved on to national security concerns and Americans’ heightened fear of terrorism.

SEMARAPURA - Dry plain of Nusa Penida is overgrown by different types of trees taken advantage by the community in the construction of residential house. The use of wood as a building material results in abundant wood waste. Typically, this wood waste is used as firewood by local community. But in the hands I Komang Arta, 37, the valueless wood waste can be transformed into high art craft.

Local trees widely known by community of Nusa Penida vary like balltree, acacia and klampuak. Simi-larly, the other threes like teak, mahogany and jackfruit are now widely grown in Nusa Penida. They are often utilized by people for the construction of house or making furniture so that at the same time also results in wood waste that is not utilized in Nusa Penida. Seeing this condition, a resident of Tanglad, Nusa Penida, I Komang Arta, takes advantage of the wood waste for the making of table and chair.

Met at his workplace on Friday (Dec. 18), Komang Arta admitted that the idea to utilize wood waste emerged after seeing the wood waste scattered in the neighbors. Initially, he used the wood waste to create private table and chair at his house. He makes the products by following the pattern and structure of the wood. Surely this makes his work look antique and natural. As a result, it also draws the interest of people that see it so that Komang Arta gets his first order.

From there, Komang Arta was motivated to con-

tinuously make table and chair on the hump of wood waste. Backyard area of 50 square meters is used to work on the orders from local people. Nearly two years after he deeply involves in the job, his order continues to grow up to tens of units. Nevertheless, Komang Arta admitted the creativity process of wood waste is only for his side job. “It is my second job on the sidelines of a break from my routine as a farmer in Nusa Penida,” he said.

A table set consists of a table and two elongated chairs are sold for IDR 2 million to IDR 3 million depending on its complexity. On average, he makes a table with a normal size of 120 cm x 50 cm and 5 cm thick. “The price of table offered is diverse, de-pending on the thickness of table and type of wood requested by buyer,” he said while adding that the better the quality of the materials used, the more expensive will be.

So far, Komang Arta can only serve the order in Nusa Penida. Nevertheless, the high demand for his table products makes Komang Arta overwhelmed to work on the order. He claimed that the table and chair production from taking the wood from the forest to processing is handled alone. The most significant ob-stacle for him is the matter of capital. To fulfill all the orders, he must provide the capital to buy wood waste. “When borrowing credit from bank, I am afraid of be-ing unable to repay later on,” he concluded. (dwa)

As seen on Saturday (Dec. 19), the beach formerly peaceful and filled with boats, recently turned quiet. Boats and other fishing gears of fishermen have been moved to a safe place. On average, the waves reach the height up to two meters. At night, the sea waves height increases. Aside from pounding waves going up and down, the wind blows also exacerbate the situation in the north coast of Bali.

A local fisherman, Kadek Su-ardika, 30, from Anturan village, Buleleng, said that since the past two days he has not dared go to sea. The pounding waves as high as half a meter to two meters and strong winds made him afraid of taking risks. The man coalesced into the members of the Taruna Samudera fishermen group stopped his fishing activities, although hav-ing to withdraw savings fund for his family’s needs.

During this bad weather, Suardi-ka just stays at home while repair-ing damaged fishing gears. Since stopping his fishing activities, the boat used everyday has been evacu-ated to a safer place. It is meant to avoid sea waves that any time may rise and sweep away his boat. “I have not gone fishing for two days because the boat was evacuated to anticipate higher waves and strong winds. From mainland, the weather looks pretty good, but he does not know if it may change at sea.

“I do not dare to take risks and it’s better to take a rest until the weather improves,” he said.

From his experience every year, Suardika claimed the current bad

weather condition has become an annual cycle that cannot be avoided. Moreover, the fishing effort at sea highly depends on weather condi-tion. On this condition, he and his friends also make preparations in the face of famine every year. It is made by borrowing fund to fulfill the needs of family and withdraw-ing fund saved during normal weather season as anticipation of fish famine.

“When having no a saving, I am forced to borrow first. Otherwise, where do we get money to buy rice or other family needs? Later, when the weather improves, we will go to sea. Then, it is the time to repay the borrowings,” he explained.

Similar condition was disclosed by another fisherman, Dewa Tut, 34. When the weather is normal, he works as a boat crew managed by the group. However, since the bad weather occurred, the large capacity vessel has been moved from the original location on An-turan Beach to Celukan Bawang Harbor. His small boat and that of neighbors have been moved to mainland. The bad weather season is estimated to take place until next January to February 2016. To sup-port his family, Dewa said that he began looking for a second job so that his family needs can be met. Every day he works as construction worker. The income will be enough to buy rice, the cost of family and other needs.

“Without looking for a second job, he does not know what to eat. I am grateful that my friend takes me to become a construction worker, so

that during bad weather like this I can still support my family until the weather goes normal. This condi-tion also has an impact on dolphin tours and snorkeling. Other than fishermen, marine tourist guides at Lovina area also take a break be-cause they do not dare to go to sea due to tidal waves and strong winds. However, some marine tour guides are still desperate to go.

A marine tour guide, Putu Leong,

from Kalibukbuk village, Lovina, said that from three days ago he has not dared go to sea due to strong winds and high waves. Although having received a reservation from business partners, he is forced to cancel the reservation to deliver travelers seeing dolphin attraction and snorkeling. When being forced to sail, he worried such bad weather condition can threaten the safety of travelers, including himself. Armed

with the experience in the previous bad weather, it is difficult to find the herd of dolphin.

“He has not gone to sea for three days because of high waves and strong winds. Tour reserva-tion remains normal, but due to unpredictable weather condition in our sea we are forced to cancel the reservation until the weather condi-tion turns normal,” he explained. (kmb38)

BUSINESS

NEW YORK — The U.S. is not winning the fight against potentially dangerous fakes, as corrupt investi-gators in China help counterfeiters perfect their art and make it easier for counterfeit goods to enter global supply chains.

Seizures of counterfeits that can be harmful — including auto parts, semiconductors, and personal care items like toothpaste — are on the rise, according to U.S. Customs data. At the same time, the quality of fakes is improving, making them harder than ever to detect, said Stephen Long, deputy chief U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer at the port of New York/Newark.

Long and his colleagues touch about 1 percent of the total con-tainer traffic at the port, which handles 3.3 million containers a year. Customs employs a sophis-ticated screening system to target containers for inspection, part of an effort to ensure that the hunt for fakes does not hinder the flow of legitimate commerce.

“There is always this needle in the haystack. What we try to do is make the haystack smaller,” said CBP spokesman Jaime Ruiz, adding that “all containers are inspected one way or the other” because they are processed through the com-puter system designed to detect anomalies.

Inevitably, things slip through. One reason Long’s job is getting

tougher begins in China. Corrupt investigators can leak proprietary details they learn from brands,

which help counterfeiters evade legal responsibility and craft more perfect-looking fakes, said Alex Theil, who runs an anti-counter-feiting company in Shanghai called Harvest Moon. Theil has spent nearly two decades investigating counterfeit auto parts in China.

Fake auto parts are of particular concern to U.S. authorities.

Seizures of such parts in the U.S. surged 83 percent in fiscal year 2014, according to customs data. Among the more than 585,000 parts seized in the last five years were fake brake parts and coun-terfeit Honda, BMW, and Toyota air bags, made in China. Some of the seized air bags not only failed to deploy but burst into flames and sent shrapnel-like shards toward the driver’s face upon impact.

“Everything within a car can be counterfeited and a profit can be made,” said Bruce Foucart, director of the National Intellectual Property Rights Coordination Center, which is jointly run by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Homeland Security Investiga-tions. “We’re seeing counterfeit windshields and tires, safety belts that will open and air bags that will deploy when they shouldn’t or brake pads that don’t work. . . You’re talking about every day getting in the car and putting your life in danger.”

A new concern: Hoverboards. The self-balancing scooters are a coveted item this holiday season, but customs agents have been inter-

cepting shipments with counterfeit batteries made in China. Ruiz said the untested batteries could over-heat, explode or leak.

On Friday, customs officers

announced the seizure of 445 hoverboards worth $170,000 in the Port of Norfolk, Virginia. They had batteries displaying counterfeit “Samsung” labels.

Counterfeiters are swift to jump on the latest consumer craze. “We are expecting a tidal wave of hov-erboards. Fake ones, unsafe ones,” Ruiz said. (afp)

The 162-member body, meeting in Africa for the first time, on Satur-day said a deal had been reached on the issue of farm export subsidies, with developed nations committing to remove their subsidies immedi-ately and developing nations set to eliminate theirs by 2018.

WTO director general Roberto Azevedo in a statement hailed the agreement as the “most significant

outcome on agriculture” in the or-ganisation’s 20-year history.

US trade representative Michael Froman said the deal would “help level the playing field for American farmers and ranchers”.

“The WTO’s actions in this area will put an end to some of the most trade distorting subsidies in existence and demonstrates what is possible when the multilateral trad-

ing system comes together to solve a problem,” he said.

The European Commission also praised the “landmark deal” as “good for fairer global trade”.

“For those who had doubts, it proves the relevance of the WTO and its capacity to deliver results,” EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstroem said in a statement.

But the conference failed to mend stubborn divisions between poor and rich nations over how to overcome the Doha deadlock and even an ad-ditional, unscheduled fifth day of meetings in the Kenyan capital did nothing to end the impasse.

The final declaration adopted Saturday said “many members” reaffirmed their “full commitment to conclude” the Doha Development Agenda goals.

But it added: “Other members do not reaffirm the Doha mandates, as they believe new approaches are necessary to achieve meaningful out-comes in multilateral negotiations.”

“Members have different views on how to address the negotiations,” it said.

The Doha Round of trade ne-gotiations was launched to great fanfare in the Qatari capital in 2001 with the aim of helping developing

countries grow through improved trade access.

But since then, industrialised and developing nations have time and again failed to agree on the level of cuts on industrial good tariffs and agriculture subsidies.

The Nairobi gathering also agreed on a timetable for implementing a deal on getting rid of import duties on 201 high-tech products, whose annual trade is estimated at over $1.3 billion (1.2 billion euros) a year.

Two new countries, Liberia and Afghanistan, joined the WTO club this week, bringing the total number of members to 164. (afp)

SEMARAPURA - Marine tourisms in Nusa Penida are very difficult to find because many of them are hidden behind the towering cliffs. Seganing spring, better known as Sebuluh waterfall in Sebuluh hamlet, Bunga Mekar for example, is clas-sified as an adventure tourism destination as access to the spring, requires a decent along a steep cliff that can drive up the adrenaline of visitors.

Local resident, I Nyoman Sergeg, said that the Seganing spring has become a popular destination amongst visitors to Nusa Penida, despite or perhaps because of the challenging obstacles that visitors have to overcome to access the location. According to Sergeg, Seganing spring has flowed behind the cliff for a very long time and that both foreign and domestic visitor enjoy going there.

Seganing spring is considered sacred by the local community use this holy water for ceremonial purposes. In the past, the spring was also the main source of water for lthe people’S daily needs.

Desak Made Ariani, a visitor to the spring said that the view of the location remains pristine and very beautiful. “I have wanted to come here for some time, and now I finally have the chance - amazing!

The scenery is incredible. The struggle to get here was not in vain -we must struggle to enjoy beauty,” said this domestic traveler.

A similar opinion was expressed by David Chilldres, a traveler from Germany, who hurriedly said that the location is very interesting, especially the crystal clear wa-ter. But he also complained that the stairs leading to the spring should be more secure to allow for easier access. (dwa)

Bad weather, fishermen afraid of going to sea

SINGARAJA - The weather in Buleleng waters recently be-gan to indicate deteriorating condition. Due to this condition, traditional fishermen in the waters of Buleleng started to stop their fishing activities. To kill time during bad weather in this season, a few fishermen are looking for a second job and some are taking a rest while repairing their damaged fishing gear. Then, the boats they usually used recently have been evacuated to a safer place so as not to be swept away by tidal waves.

Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country, suffered several major bomb attacks by Islamic radicals between 2000 and 2009, including the 2002 Bali bombings which killed 202 people. But a crackdown has weakened the most dangerous extremist

networks.However the emergence of IS

has sparked alarm that Indone-sians returning from battlefields in the Middle East could revive the networks.

A few passengers are being questioned, said Kenya’s Interior Minister Joseph Nkaissery, speak-ing at a press conference at the Mombasa airport. Bomb experts are inspecting the device to see if it was an explosive, he said.

The Boeing 777 Air France flight 463 was heading to Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris when the pilots requested an emergency land-ing at the Moi International Airport at 12:37 a.m., police spokesman Charles Owino said.

“It requested an emergency land-ing when a device suspected to be an explosive was discovered in the lavatory,” Owino said.

The plane was carrying 459 passengers and 14 crew members on board and had left Mauritius at

9 p.m., Owino said All passengers were safely evacuated and the de-vice was taken out, said Owino.

“The object, believed to be an explosive device has successfully been retrieved from the aircraft,” said Kenya Airports Authority in a post on Twitter, adding that sched-uled flights to Mombasa were dis-rupted during the interval but that normal operations have resumed.

A passenger who spoke to jour-nalists after leaving the plane in Mombasa described the emergency landing.

“The plane just went down slowly, slowly, slowly, so we just realized probably something was wrong,” said Benoit Lucchini of Paris.

“The personnel of Air France

was just great, they were just won-derful. So they keep everybody calm. We did not know what was happening,” said Lucchini. “So we secured the seat belt to land in Mombasa because we thought it was a technical problem but actu-ally it was not a technical problem. It was something in the toilet. Something wrong in the toilet, it could be a bomb.”

France has been under a state of emergency since the Nov. 13 at-tacks in Paris that left 130 people dead. The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for that and the Oct. 31 crash of a Russian pas-senger in the Sinai desert that killed all 224 people aboard. Moscow has said that the crash was caused by a bomb on the plane.

BEIJING — A landslide collapsed and buried buildings at and around an industrial park in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen on Sunday, leaving 22 people missing, authorities said.

At least seven people were rescued after 18 buildings were buried and an area of 20,000 square meters (24,000 square yards) was covered with soil, the Ministry of Public Security’s firefighting bureau said in an online statement.

Shenzhen’s fire brigade said that one building had collapsed, but that the landslide had affected a large area in the northwestern outskirts of the city.

Li Yikang, the deputy secretary general of the Shenzhen city govern-ment, said at a televised news confer-ence that 17 men and five women were missing. He said more than 900 people had been evacuated.

Giving different figures than the fire authorities, Li said that four people had been rescued and 22 factory build-ings buried, involving 15 companies.

The reason for the discrepancies wasn’t immediately clear. Li said that nearly 1,500 people were involved in rescue efforts.

State broadcaster CCTV said there was a residential area next to the indus-trial zone. It said the buildings buried included two workers’ dormitories.

Ren Jiguang, the deputy chief of Shenzhen’s public security bureau, told CCTV that most people had been moved to safety before the landslide hit.

The Beijing Youth Daily, citing a local resident, reported that the soil that slid down onto the area had been piled up against a 100-meter (110-yard) -high hill after being dug up in the past two years in construction work.

State media carried photos of what looked like at least one five-story building leaning over and partly crumpled in the industrial park, and a sea of brown soil covering a vast area around it. (ap)

WARSAW — Poland’s prime minister says anti-government pro-tests over the past two weekends are the work of opposition members an-gry about being ousted from power.

Thousands of people have dem-onstrated across Poland for the past two Saturdays to protest moves by Prime Minister Beata Szydlo’s new right-wing government to reduce the

ability of the Constitutional Tribunal to be a check on the government’s power. Protesters are calling that a threat to Poland’s democracy.

In an interview Sunday with

TVN24, Szydlo dismissed those ac-cusations, saying protests are being led by politicians “who lost power and privileges” in the last election.

The organizer of the rallies,

the Committee for the Defense of Democracy, insists it is a citizens’ initiative that does not work for any political party. (ap)

MAKASSAR — Rescuers have pulled out 39 survivors and three dead from a passenger boat that sank in central Indonesia after be-ing buffeted by high waves, and were battling bad weather Sunday to reach scores of others still miss-ing.

The fiberglass ferry was on its way from Kolaka in Southest Su-lawesi province crossing the Gulf of Bone to Siwa town with 110 pas-sengers and 12 crew, when it was overwhelmed by waves more than 3 meters (10 feet) high during stormy weather on Saturday afternoon, said Roki Asikin, head of the search and rescue agency in Makassar, the capital of South Sulawesi.

Six rescue boats and ships were sent from Kendari and Makassar after they received a distress call from the crew who reported that the vessel was starting to take on wa-ter about 21 kilometers (13 miles) southeast of Siwa port in Wajo district, Asikin said. The passengers included 14 children, he said.

Earlier Sunday, fishermen found four people, including a woman and a child wearing life jackets. They told authorities that their boat sank hours after being hit by high waves.

Transportation Ministry spokes-man Julius Barata said 35 other survivors and three dead were discovered later.

He added that the four who were found earlier Sunday were taken to Port Hospital in Siwa, while the others were on their way to another hospital in Kolaka Utara district.

Television footage showed doz-ens of family members anxiously waiting for their loved ones at the Siwa port.

Indonesian boat accidents have killed hundreds of people in re-cent years. Boats are often over-crowded and safety regulations are poorly enforced. The vast country spans more than 17,000 islands with a population of 250 million, and boats are a popular and relatively cheap form of trans-portation. (ap)

JAKARTA - Indonesian au-thorities backed down Friday from attempting to enforce a ban on ride-hailing apps and motorbike taxis after the move sparked online fury in a country where millions rely on the services.

Transport Minister Ignasius Jonan announced Thursday he had ordered police to properly implement an exist-ing law that gives a narrow definition of public transport, meaning apps such as Uber and motorbike taxis known as “ojek” should be illegal.

But as anger mounted Friday, Jonan did a U-turn, announcing in a statement that motorbike taxis and app-based transport can continue operating “until there is decent and reliable public transport”.

Uber and other services, includ-ing the popular motorbike taxi app Go-Jek, have been able to operate in Indonesia despite the law, becoming immensely popular in traffic-choked cities with little public transport.

Jonan’s move, which followed pressure from traditional transport

operators, triggered a flood of online anger, with #SaveGojek becoming a top trending topic on Twitter.

He was also summoned by Presi-dent Joko Widodo, who voiced his support for transport apps.

LUMAJANG, East Java - Mandara Giri Semeru Agung Temple is a universal temple located at Senduro village, Senduro, Lumajang, East Java. Although the temple has now been established in the east slope of Mount Semeru, not many people know the rigorous struggle of a number of prominent Hindu figures in Bali in pursuing the con-struction of the temple since 1963. Ultimately, it can be established and inaugurated in 1992.

Tjokorda Artha Ardana Sukawati, a Balinese figure who participated in fighting for the establishment of the temple, said that the temple construction on Mount Semeru was begun by the implementation of holy water invocation from Bali directly to Patirtan Watu Kelosot at the foot of Mount Semeru. It was held during the Ekadasa Rudra grandiose ceremony at Besakih Temple in March 1963. The activity of invoking holy water to Watu Kelosot was re-done in 1979 with regard to convening of the Ekadasa Rudra ceremony at Besakih Temple.

After that time, the tradition of invoking holy water to Watu Kelosot for other universal temples in Bali when making grandiose ceremony was begun. The area of Mount Semeru with its Watu Kelosot sacred springs is increasingly recognized, especially when organizing gran-diose ceremony. High priests or sulinggih always performs ngaskara to Mount Semeru, pleading before Hyang Shiva Pasupati believed to abide on the peak of Mount Semeru.

“The idea on the construction of this temple has been emerging from the senior figures of Bali in 1963. Originally, the idea was inspired that we have many temples in Bali. Well, when praying we always give notice to Hyang Shiva Pasupati abiding on Mount Semeru. But when our senior figures going there, there is no temple or shrines to venerate Ida Batara of Mount Semeru,” he explained.

With such condition, the leaders of Bali in the 1970s began moving to fight for the establishment of the temple. They included Tjokorda Gede Agung Sukawati, some senior figures of Pemecutan Palace and other figures. The struggle for the temple construction was also based on Hindu literature references like the Nagarakrtagama as well as historical references that refer to the Mount Semeru as a sacred area during ancient Java.

“Initially, the location permit proposed was rejected by local govern-ment. Finally the late Jero Mangku Sarja directed the establishment of Padma shrine to his own land on Mount Semeru spreading across the area of 800 square meters, and it becomes the location of the current temple,” he said.

Process of the temple construction did not take place smoothly. It happened because it was hampered by licensing problem and dif-ficulties of sending raw materials to the temple. Until 1989 the temple construction could continue. Now, the physical building of the Man-dara Giri Semeru Agung Temple has been established on an area of two hectares, completed with split gates at the outermost courtyard and arched gates in the middle courtyard. On the east side is built the ashram of sulinggih, chamber pavilion to store ritual paraphernalia and two units of pagibungan and kitchen. On the southern side stands a spacious wantilan hall.

The Pacers dropped two games behind pacesetter Cleveland, but retained second place in the division because Chicago also lost, beaten convincingly at New York.

Also Saturday, Houston built a huge early lead and coasted to vic-

tory against the disappointing Los Angeles Clippers.

Memphis’ Matt Barnes finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Grizzlies, who moved within a game of Dallas for second place in the Southwest Division. Paul George led the Pacers with 29 points, despite going 8 of 22 from the field.

Houston bounced out to a 26 points lead in the first half and was untroubled in beating the Clippers 107-97.

Dwight Howard had 22 points and 14 rebounds for the Rockets, who were still up by 19 points with

7-1/2 minutes left, when the starters for both teams were benched, with the result inevitable.

New York notched its fourth straight win by beating a weary Chicago 107-91. Carmelo Anthony scored 27 points and Arron Afflalo added 18 for New York, which got back to a .500 winning percentage at 14-14 after winning just 17 games last season.

Joakim Noah had 21 points for the Bulls in his first start of the season. Washington’s John Wall had 27 points and 12 assists and Garrett Temple scored a career-high 21 points to lead the Wizards past Charlotte 109-101.

Oklahoma City extended its run of wins at home to eight straight by routing the struggling Los Angeles Lakers 118-78. (ap)

MELBOURNE, Australia — Russian-born Australian Arina Rodionova has fallen one match short of gaining a wild-card entry into January’s Australian Open, losing the deciding match a day after her marriage.

Teenager Maddison Inglis beat Rodionova 6-4, 6-2 in the women’s wild-card final Sun-day to gain entry to the main draw of the Grand Slam tour-nament beginning Jan. 18.

Rodionova had won her semifinal on Saturday morn-ing which was re-scheduled to accommodate her afternoon wedding to Australian Football League player Ty Vickery.

There was also some fam-ily drama in the men’s final: James Duckworth won by walkover when his opponent, Ben Mitchell, had to rush back to Brisbane to be with his part-ner for the birth of their first child. (ap)

Nico Rosberg is likely to be made to wait by Mercedes before finding out if his future with the team will extend beyond the 2016 Formula 1 season. In July 2014 Rosberg signed a contract extension with Mercedes that expires at the end of next season.

Through his five years with the team Rosberg has scored 14 wins and 22 pole positions, but he has had to settle for second best in the champi-onship to team-mate Lewis Hamilton over the past two years.

Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff has also recently made clear to Hamilton and Rosberg that if their antipathy towards one another affects the team in any way then he may have to reconsider

his driver line-up.Asked about Rosberg’s future, Wolff told Au-

tosport: “The line-up is a great line-up. “Both of them are a major part of the team and responsible for getting the team to where we are today.

“But it’s early days to discuss that [Rosberg’s contract]. I want to see how the season pans out. “There are areas we want to develop altogether as a team, and let’s see how that goes.”

It was in May this year Hamilton agreed a new three-year contract with Mercedes, through to the end of 2018. Asked whether a new deal for Rosberg could be done as quickly into next year, Wolff said: “I don’t know yet.”

Speaking at the Autosport Awards in early

December, Wolff accepted that Hamilton and Rosberg do not need to be friends, but he does not want their rivalry to get out of hand.

“It’s very important to keep the spirit within the team, and the competition between Nico and Lewis has been very fierce, very competitive at times,” he said. “It’s understandable because they are fighting in a car that is capable of winning the championship against each other.

“The guy in the other car cannot be your friend, but we need to be careful that it doesn’t spill over on both sides of the garage.

“We’ve seen teams in the past where there is a competition being created that is not good for the dynamics within the team.” (net)

Guardiola, 44, has been linked with Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal. The former Barcelona coach has won two league titles and the German Cup since joining Bayern in sum-mer 2013.

Former Chelsea manager Ance-lotti, 56, has been on a break from the game since being sacked by Real Madrid in May 2015. Bayern are eight points clear at the top of the Bundesliga and will play Italian club Juventus in the last 16 of the Champions League.

“We are thankful to Guardiola for all he gave our club and hope to celebrate more success in the current season,” Bayern chief ex-ecutive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge told German newspaper Bild. “With Ancelotti we have another very suc-cessful coach coming to Bayern. We are looking forward to working together.” Ancelotti has won the Champions League three times, twice with AC Milan and once at Real Madrid, and guided Chelsea to the Premier League title and FA Cup in 2010. He recently suggested a preference to return to the English top flight but has instead decided to join Bayern.

Where next for Guardiola? There is likely to be intense

speculation over Guardiola’s next destination, with three English clubs leading the way.

Chelsea sacked Jose Mourinho on Thursday and have appointed Guus Hiddink until the end of the season, while Guardiola has been strongly linked with taking over from City boss Manuel Pellegrini in the summer. United boss Louis van Gaal is also under pressure follow-ing his side’s recent slump in form, which has seen them exit the Cham-pions League at the group stages and lose to Norwich on Saturday.

The Spaniard was appointed Bar-celona boss in 2008 and became the Spanish club’s most successful man-ager as he led the Catalan club to 13 trophies in his four-year tenure.

He won three league titles, two Champions Leagues and a Copa del Rey while at the Nou Camp outfit.

The former Spain international took a year-long sabbatical before taking over at Bayern Munich on the back of the German club winning the Champions League, Bundes-liga and German Cup under Jupp Heynckes. As well as the league and cup titles, Bayern have also reached the the semi-finals of the Champions League in Guardiola’s two season in charge, with Real Madrid knocking them out in 2013-14 and Barcelona the following season. loNdoN — Guus Hiddink returned to Chelsea for a second spell as manager on Saturday, hired until the end of the season with the tough task of turning round the struggling Premier League champions following Jose Mourinho’s firing.

As Chelsea beat Sunderland 3-1 under the temporary com-mand of Steve Holland, Hiddink watched from the stands at Stam-ford Bridge with owner Roman Abramovich and former striker Didier Drogba, who has been linked with a coaching role.

Drogba scored in Chelsea’s 2009 FA Cup final win when Hid-dink previously filled the Chelsea managerial void for around four months after the exit of Luiz Felipe Scolari.

The 69-year-old Hiddink’s latest firefighting role comes with Chelsea only four points above the Premier League relegation zone following an alarming slump just seven months after sweeping to the title.

“I am excited to return to Stamford Bridge. Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in the world but is not where it should be

at the moment,” Hiddink said. “However, I am sure we can all turn this season around.”

Chelsea said that it views the Dutchman as a coach with a “wealth of top-level experience and success.” The club high-lighted how fans were “singing his name following our final home game” of the 2008-09 season but it was Mourinho’s name they were still chanting on Saturday.

Hiddink’s fortunes have faded since he was last at Chelsea. He quit as manager of Turkey after failing to qualify the team for the 2012 Euro-pean Championship and did not win a trophy with Anzhi Makhachkala during a spell with the Russian club.

He has been out of work since being fired by the Netherlands in June during the latter stages of his country’s unsuccessful attempt to qualify for Euro 2016. He had five losses, four victories and a draw during his year in charge of a team that finished third at the 2014 World Cup under Louis van Gaal, now the manager of Manchester United. (ap)

PariS — French league leader Paris Saint-Germain remained unde-feated at the halfway point after beat-ing Caen 3-0 away on Saturday.

Angel di Maria, who scored twice, underlined the good start to his PSG career since joining from Manchester United in the offseason. He has nine goals in all competitions with 10 as-sists.

His first goal was a crisp finish after Caen failed to clear a cross from right back Serge Aurier. He added his sec-ond five minutes after the break, clip-ping the ball neatly over goalkeeper Remi Vercoutre from close range.

In between, Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored a spectacular league-leading 15th goal with a powerful shot from just outside the penalty area. PSG has not lost in the league since a 3-2 defeat away to Bordeaux on March 15, and was under little threat from the Nor-mandy side.

Caen was awarded a late penalty when captain Thiago Silva barged into striker Andy Delort, but PSG goal-keeper Kevin Trapp dived to his right to push away Delort’s shot.

Heading into the winter break, PSG sits 19 points clear of Monaco, which was held to a goalless draw at Troyes, as the bottom club recorded its third successive draw despite playing almost the entire match with 10 men.

Angers can move back into second and cut the gap to 17 if it wins at Saint-Etienne on Sunday.

With 51 points, PSG has the highest

total midway through a season — one more than Lyon’s tally in 2006 — and PSG’s 48 goals is also the highest tally. PSG’s defense has also been strong, with only nine goals conceded in 19 games, giving coach Laurent Blanc’s side a massive goal difference of plus-39.

Monaco looked certain to win after Troyes went down a man in the third minute when Mouhamadou Dabo fouled Helder Costa, with the on-loan Benfica forward through on goal.

However, Lacina Traore’s penalty was too weak and Paul Bernardoni was able to save it — the first crucial stop by the Troyes goalkeeper.

Monaco could have had another penalty minutes later but the referee waved away the visiting side’s protests when Traore was fouled by Thiago.

Troyes could also have had a spot kick when Stephane Darbion appeared to be fouled by Ricardo Carvalho. Troyes had chances to snatch victory in the dying seconds, but has equaled Bastia’s record of being without a win in its first 18 league matches.

Guingamp and Toulouse remained mired in the relegation zone. Gu-ingamp fell to a fifth consecutive defeat 2-0 at home to Rennes, with Ousmane Dembele and Giovanni Sio netting the goals.

Toulouse managed a 1-1 draw against Lille despite being reduced to 10 men after Tongo Doumbia was sent off in the 68th following a second booking. (ap)

MaNCHeSTer — Manchester United’s first loss at home to Nor-wich in more than 26 years extended the club’s winless run to six games and heaped more pressure on man-ager Louis van Gaal on Saturday.

Norwich won 2-1 with goals ei-ther side of halftime. United didn’t score until more than an hour into the game with its first shot on target, and couldn’t prevent falling to Norwich at Old Trafford for the first time since Aug. 30, 1989, three years before the English Premier League began.

United dropped to fifth in the standings, nine points behind leader Leicester. “We know we have to win against Norwich,” Van Gaal said. “We have won all our games or at least drawn at home. We know that

it (losing to Norwich) is not good enough for us. The players know that, I know that, the fans know that, and the board know that.

“After the second goal, the fans were supporting us. They give a good example that you have to stick together to come out of this period. We shall come back, but OK, we have to work very hard.”

Striker Cameron Jerome evaded two challenges before beating David de Gea in the penalty area for the opening goal, before halftime.

Jerome turned provider after halftime, leading a breakaway before threading the ball to Alexander Tettey, who beat De Gea with a low shot inside his near post from the edge of the area.

Anthony Martial lashed in Unit-

ed’s reply from close range but the host, for which captain Wayne Rooney returned from injury to make his 500th appearance for the club, could not find an equalizer. United managed only one more shot on target after Martial’s goal.

Van Gaal’s side, for which the defeat is the first at home in the league this season, has not won in any competition since Nov. 21, and the slide in form has also seen United exit the Champions League.

The manager will face growing scrutiny around his position at the club, especially as Jose Mourinho departed Chelsea on Thursday and released a statement earlier on Satur-day saying he does not plan to have a break from football. (ap)

BarCeloNa — Lucas Perez equaled a club record for Deportivo La Coruna by scoring for a seventh straight Spanish league game to help earn a 2-0 win over Eibar on Saturday.

The striker earned a penalty when fouled by Asier Riesgo, and he fired the spot kick into the corner of the net when the goalkeeper dove the other way four minutes before halftime at Riazor Stadium.

Perez matched the milestone of scoring in seven consecutive rounds held by Bebeto since the 1992-93 season.

It was his 12th goal this sea-son, pulling him level with Real Sociedad’s Imanol Agirretxe as

the competition’s third leading scorers behind Barcelona pair Neymar (14) and Luis Suarez (13).

Perez’s scoring run has helped keep Deportivo unbeaten in seven rounds, including a comeback for a 2-2 draw at leader Barcelona last weekend. A perennial strug-gler in recent years, the north-western club consolidated its hold on sixth place and a Europa League spot.

Deportivo played the last 20 minutes with 10 men after Luis “Luisinho” Correia was sent off with his second yellow card for simulating a penalty by diving af-ter contact, but Alejandro Arribas sealed the result with a header

four minutes later.Elsewhere, Valencia coach

Gary Neville remained winless in his second league match after a 2-2 draw at home against Getafe. Espanyol won in the league debut of coach Constantin Galca, while Sevilla drew 0-0 at Real Betis in an ill-tempered derby.

Neville got a strong perfor-mance from Spain striker Paco Alacer, who canceled out Pablo Sarabia’s free kick for Getafe before he also set up Santi Mina to level again after Angel Lafita restored the visitors’ lead.

Valencia, however, was fortu-nate not to concede a late goal to Lafita, who missed a point-blank opportunity moments before

hitting the crossbar in stoppage time.

“In the first half of the game we made some mistakes. It is a pity, because the effort has been enormous,” Neville said. “I know that the results will follow.”

Neville started as coach with a 2-0 home loss to Lyon in the Champions League, followed by a 1-1 draw at Eibar in the league. The former Manchester United defender got his first win, 2-0 over third-tier Ba-rakaldo, in the Copa del Rey on Wednesday.

Espanyol striker Felipe Caice-do scored in the second half for a 1-0 win over visitors Las Palmas.

Right back Javi Lopez recov-ered the ball to start a counterat-tack that he finished off by cross-ing for Caicedo to score. Galca, a former Espanyol player, won his first match in charge when Espa-nyol eliminated Levante from the Copa del Rey on Tuesday.

The Seville derby featured 12 yellow cards — seven for Betis — to just two scoring opportu-nities, both by Sevilla’s Kevin Gameiro that were saved by goalkeeper Antonio Adan.

“It was a nasty match,” Sevil-la’s Victor “Vitolo” Machin said. “There was more tension than anything else.” Sevilla remained in seventh place, one above Va-lencia. (ap)

(ap)

Indonesian police in August arrested three people with links to the Islamic State group who were planning to launch bomb attacks during Independence Day celebra-tions. (afp)

Two Air France flights from the U.S. to Paris were diverted on Nov. 18 after bomb threats were received. No bombs were found on the planes from Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. (ap)

(ap)

ing several suspects who were on an Air France flight from Mauritius to Paris that was forced to land early Sunday in the Kenyan coastal city of Mombasa after a device suspected to be a bomb was found in a lavatory.

The KAI T-50 Golden Eagle, a U.S.-South Korean-made light attack aircraft, spun out of con-trol and crashed into an air force base complex near Adi Sutjipto Airport in Yogyakarta, a tourist destination city on the main island of Java, according to a witness,

Jawardi, who goes by a single name. He spoke to MetroTV.

The crash occurred on the second day of an air show cel-ebrating the 70th anniversary of the Air Force Flight School in Yogyakarta, said Air Vice Marshal Dwi Badarmanto, an air force

spokesman.The pilot and co-pilot — both

Indonesians — died instantly, and an investigation team has been sent to the crash site, he said.

TV showed plumes of black smoke billowing from the wreck-age as the plane burs t in to flames.

“Hindering innovation and prog-ress for the sake of bureaucratic red tape? Moronic,” said Twitter user Marhadiasha.

“Our government is dumb!”, tweeted Indonesian film director Joko Anwar.

Go-Jek has more than 200,000 drivers across the country, also providing courier, food delivery and even house-cleaning services. A flurry of other motorbike taxi-hailing apps have appeared following its success.

Uber is also popular but has faced difficulties, with some of its cars seized in Jakarta.

Public transport in Jakarta and other Indonesian cities is notoriously bad, with buses poorly maintained and trains old and often overcrowded. (afp)

(kmb38)

Ruiz said the untested batteries could over-heat, explode or leak.

announced the seizure of 445 hoverboards worth $170,000 in the Port of Norfolk, Virginia. They had batteries displaying counterfeit “Samsung” labels.

(dwa)

(afp)

COVER STORYWira Satya Military Resort

has also organized the planting of the cigeulis variety of rice at Subak Munggu in Mengwi, Coherang rice at Subak Ta-nah Putih, in Darmasaba vil-lage, Abiansemal, and at Subak Banyu Kuning, Padangsambian Klod village, West Denpasar.

(kmb36)

(kmb12)

Wira Satya Military Resort, I Nyo-man Cantiasa said that today, despite

being an international tourist destination,

Bali must nonetheless maintain its agricultural sector in order to ensure food security.

The conversion of farmlands into buildings must be slowed down to allow agriculture to provide for basic needs. “Current agricultural condition must be maintained. Because Bali is a popular tourist destination, there is a large demand for land which poses a challenge to this endeav-our,” said the Commander Cantiasa.

In response to this challenge, the military has been

coordinating with the local government to find a way to prevent farmlands from being converted. If conversion cannot be avoided, the commander hopes that it can be done selectively, in harmony with the development of Bali, with enough farmlands left so that food-sovereignty can still be maintained.
