Denpasar (Bali Post)—

The existence of Tabanan resi-dent becoming the victims of ra-bies due to bitten by rats, deservesto be alert of all parties. To whatextent is the danger of rabies if ithas spread to the rats? The Headof Animal Biomolecular Labora-tory, Faculty of Animal Husbandry,Dr. I Gusti Ngurah Mahardikawhen contacted, last Friday (Jan15), told that before infecting ratsrabies was very dangerous.

The case of rabies from rat bitein Tabanan, according to him, needed re-examining. Ecologi-cally, to this extent rabies hasnever come from rats. “Untilnow, naturally or ecologically, rabies has never been infected bythe rats. It was once tested by thelaboratory, and through the ex-periment rats were exposed torabies,” he said.

During this time, the well-

They always monitor and en-courage routine patrol, whether it isat night, afternoon or morning. However, this strategy also seemsto result in nothing to know the per-petrators. Allegedly, looting perpe-trators always threatened the guardswith a knife.

Nevertheless, police officers, es-pecially Directorate of Detective,Bali Police controlled by Chief ofDetective Operational Unit 1, CecepNandi Cecep Trimaryadi, nevergave up. The results of the investi-gation seemed to get a clue due tothe existing CCTV recordings at theCircle-K in the area of JalanCokroaminoto, Denpasar.

Based on the tape, it was knownwhat happened two weeks ago.Armed with the tape, detective unitpursued the perpetrators. Havinginvestigated for a few days, thetrails of suspect were finallytracked. Apparently, the perpetratorwas named Kadek Wariana aliasKadek Bola, 21, from Jembrana.

The suspect Kadek Bola was ar-rested when he headed for his homeon Jalan Mataram GangLinggamurti No. 6 Kuta, Badung, last Thursday (Jan 14) at 6:00 pmLocal Time. Without resistance, thesuspect was arrested and immedi-ately taken to Headquarter of BaliPolice for further review.

Since the past few months, robbery actions often targetedminimarkets like Circle-K. Recorded, nine outlets of Circle-Kspread in the Denpasar region once become the target of rob-bers. Rampant robberies to minimarkets opening 24 hours madepolice officers furious.

Gde Sugianyar, last Friday (Jan 15),explained that the suspect was be-ing detained at Headquarter of BaliPolice. Based on the results of theprovisional examination, the suspectconfessed to rob at nine outlets ofCircle-K since November 2009. Ev-ery taking action, the defendant didit at dawn because Circle-K is open24 hours and guarded by minimallytwo people at dawn (03.00-05.00 amLocal Time—ed). The suspect armedwith a bayonet to scare the guardsof minimarket. “The suspect pre-tended to be shopping. While look-ing at the situation, the suspect en-tered,” said former Chief ofBalikpapan Resort Police.

If the situation was quiet, with-out hesitancy the suspect directlythreatened guardians on duty. Thesuspect was draining money in thecash register’s drawer. In one-timeaction, the defendant admitted to geta result of IDR 1-3 million. “Themoney from the crime was given tohis brother and parents. The rest isused for having fun,” he explained.

The suspect was also known tohave a brother in prison cells becauseof fraud cases. In addition to the sus-pect, police also seized a bayonet, cash worth IDR 1.5 million, twomotorcycles of Jupiter and Variotype, clothing and a pair of femalesandals that was about to be givento his girlfriend. Ecologically,Rats Hard tobe Infected by Rabies

known animals exposed to rabies aredogs, insectivorous bats, cows, buf-faloes, horses and cats. However, thetransmission chain to cow is inter-rupted because this kind of animaldoes not bite when attacking, butgores. On that account, the risk oftransmitting rabies to humans andother animals is very small. For now, dogs are animals spreading rabies.Viewed from the pattern of behav-ior, it is very little dog playing orcontacting with rats. “However, it isnot ignorable,” said Mahardika.

Meanwhile, when asked for con-firmation about the victims of ra-bies after being bitten by a ratTabanan, the Head of Bali HealthServices, Nyoman Sutedja arguedthat the death of Ni NyomanKoming, 46, a resident ofKatimemes, Sudimara, Tabananwas caused by rabies transmitted byrat. “Having been confirmed toTabanan, in fact the patient sufferedfrom diabetes. She was bitten by a

rat so her wound got infection dueto diabetes she has been suffer-ing. The patient died of the infec-tion, not because of rabies,”Sutedja said when contacted onlast Friday (Jan 15).

Like Mahardika, Sutedja alsosaid that rats were naturally diffi-cult to get rabies. “Rats usuallycause plague,” he said. For that, the policy of providing anti-rabiesvaccine (VAR) is limited topeople bitten by dogs, monkeys, bats and cats. Therefore, it is notrecommended to people bitten byrats,” said Sutedja. Meanwhile,Sutedja also added that regardingto VAR supply distributors wereready with their VAR stock. Re-gencies/City government that hashad their fund was unnecessary towait for ordering VAR. “Ex-pected, with the smoothness ofstock from distributors, VAR inregencies/city could also be avail-able,” he added. Furthermore, the existence ofsuch bus stops is only taken advan-tage by street vendors. Similarly, the existence of public transporta-tion in the city of cultured city hasimpressed a suspended animation.

Member of Commission B ofDenpasar House, I WayanMariyana Wandhira, met inDenpasar, last Friday (Jan 15), ad-mitted to have seen the construc-tion of bus stops at three locations. One of them was in front of theDenpasar Tourism Office. “Has thedevelopment passed through ma-ture studies? Wandhira said that the develop-ment of those bus stops shouldcomply with the necessity. More-over, during this time quite a bit ofDenpasar residents used publictransportation. Function of manybus stops seemed redundant todayso it gave impression of wastingbudget. “Why we should build busstop first, while the route of publictransport route has not existed yet.I am afraid there’ll be more changeslater,” he said.

Against this, the Head ofDenpasar Transportation Services,I Gede Astika, said the making ofthe new bus stop posed the programof Bali provincial government. Thedevelopment should support thetransportation services ofDenpasar, Badung, Gianyar andTabanan (Sarbagita) which would

This measuremeant to anticipate that the car bear-ing the horse logo could not jumpup and be used on the streets. “Wehave confiscated their key,” he ex-plained after the handover of posi-tion of Directorate of Intelligenceand Security from Djoko Mulyonoto Ketut Argawa, last Friday.

Were the three luxurious cars be-longing to contraband? ChiefSutisna did not dare say so. His partyjust acted decisively by issuing ticketof traffic violation. “To find out ifthe cars are contraband or bulging,it was completely the tasks of Cus-tom and Excise Office,” he said.

Spokesperson of Bali Police, GdeSugianyar, added that the police car-ried out their duties according to thelaw. In relation to the cases of theFerrari car, his party did act under

the laws of traffic. “Yes, one of themis by issuing a ticket of traffic vio-lation,” he explained.

Although they have had Form B,said the former chief of BalikpapanResort Police, the cars might not beused on the highway because theirdocuments have not been complete.“The Customs here (Bali) shouldmake coordination with the CentralCustoms and Excise. Whether FormB at hand of those owners is origi-nal or fake,” he concluded.

Furthermore, he explained theForm B was usually reserved for im-ported built-up cars. “And it was usedfor government facilities such as thecar of diplomats, international agen-cies and foreign investors. Its policywas the delays of entry fee. If the ve-hicle has been used, must be returnedto their state,” he added. (kmb21)

The reason, some relevant agencies need to do acommon understanding to theplanned creation of this bike path. Moreover, the matter of road washandled by cross-agency.

He said that the provision of bikepaths required further studies relatedto the input from the Public WorksServices worrying about the reduc-tion of road width. This would havean impact on the authorities to domaintenance. In other words, whenthe width of the road was reduced,it also automatically changed the sta-

tus of road because it had somethingto do with the classification of theroad having its own rules.

Provision of bicycle paths on thehighway was mandated in the newLaw on the traffic services. Article25 in paragraph 1 letter g mention, every road used for general trafficis obliged to be equipped with otherfacilities such as signs, markers, bike path, and others. Apart fromthat chapter, it also listed in Article45 regulating the facilities on thehighway. The makingof this bus stop is one of theSarbagita transportation infrastruc-ture provisions because it has beenbuilt earlier than the means ofSarbagita transportation,” he said.

Earlier, a member of Commis-sion III of Bali House, I.B. GedeUdiyana, said that the developmentof bus stop at various locationspassed through by Sarbagita trans-portation cost to reach IDR 1.7 bil-lion more. Udiyana admitted thatSarbagita programs being underconsideration for several years wasone of the policies to address thetraffic problems in South Bali.

The issues on time and route in-accuracies that were not maximal,as well as real traffic jam inspiredthe basic idea to realize adequatetransportation facilities. In otherwords, this endeavor was to developpublic awareness so they would beback to use public transport in alldaily activities, which finally couldsuppress the use of private vehicles.

Udiyana said, by posting thebudget made by the Bali ProvincialGovernment in the 2010 budgetyear, his party expected that re-gency/city governments also sup-ported this program. At least, saidthe former Head of Commission Bof this Denpasar House, local gov-ernments that would pass throughthe city have already thought aboutthe program and provided appropri-ate input for the continuation of theoperational mode of transportationacross regencies/city. For example, each existing territory, route, andthe right bus stop placement, hasbecome part of the inputs of the re-gencies / cities government to theteam in the province. (kmb12)

SANTIAGO, Chile – Chile’spresidential election could comedown to a nerve-racking, vote-by-vote count Sunday after a late surgeby former President Eduardo Freimade his race against billionaireSebastian Pinera too close to predict.

Chileans vote for presidentwith Pinochet in mind

He urged voters not to lose theirhope as the government wages a“campaign of terror.”

With Frei and Pinera agreeingon most government policies —a reflection of the remarkableeconomic, social and politicalsuccess that has given Bacheletnearly 80 percent approval rat-ings as she ends her five-yearterm — human rights became thewild card.

Bachelet, herself a torture vic-tim, steadfastly supported judi-cial efforts to resolve crimesagainst humanity during the1973-1990 dictatorship, andmore than 700 former militaryand security officials have beenput on trial.

But efforts to resolve dictator-ship-era rights abuses remain apainful topic around LatinAmerica, and aggressive movesaren’t always popular. Voters inUruguay rejected an initiative tooverturn that country’s amnestylaws last year, even as theyelected a former rebel as presi-dent. Amnesties also remain inforce in Brazil, and while Argen-tina overturned its amnesty laws, rights trials there have becomehighly politicized.

The issue came to the fore-front of Chile’s presidentialcampaign last month when ajudge concluded that Frei’s fa-ther, a Pinochet critic, had beensecretly poisoned to death.Bachelet raised it again by in-augurating Chile’s Museum ofMemory less than a week beforethe vote.

And Frei pressed it hard inWednesday’s televised debate, forcing Pinera to acknowledgethat “part of my sector commit-ted errors” during the dictatorshipby denying human rights viola-tions even as thousands ofPinochet’s opponents were tor-tured or killed.

Kim’s all-powerful National De-fense Commission had threatened Fri-day to initiate a sacred “retaliatorybattle” against the South in anger overits reported contingency plan to copewith potential unrest in the communistcountry. WELLINGTON, New Zealand– Britain’s Prince William took thereins of the winning America’s Cupyacht and visited the site of the 2011Rugby World Cup in New Zealandon Sunday at the start of his first of-ficial overseas trip on behalf of hisgrandmother, Queen Elizabeth II.

The 27-year-old prince is alsoscheduled to officially open NewZealand’s Supreme Court buildingand perform a string of other dutiesduring his three-day visit.

The South Pacific country’s Su-preme Court was resurrected lastyear, ending a period of nearly 150years when its final appellate courtwas Britain’s Privy Council, basedin London. It was one of a few re-maining relics of its past as a Britishcolony.

Queen Elizabeth remains thecountry’s head of state, formallyknown as Queen of New Zealand. The prince is second in line to theBritish throne after his father, PrinceCharles.

An avid rugby player, PrinceWilliam’s first duty Sunday was tovisit to Eden Park in the northern cityof Auckland, the main ground for the2011 Rugby World Cup. He was ac-companied by officials, severalmembers of New Zealand’s AllBlacks rugby team and about 60journalists.

SEOUL, South Korea – North Korean leader Kim Jong Il said his country must bolster itsarmed forces, state media reported Sunday, two days after his regime warned it would launch awar against South Korea if necessary.

million people. He often calls for a stron-ger military during the visits.

The report of his latest inspection, however, came two days after his de-fense commission issued a rare state-ment strongly protesting the South’s al-leged contingency plan, which it saysis aimed at toppling Kim’s regime.

The commission said “a sacred na-tionwide retaliatory battle to blow upthe stronghold of the South Korean au-thorities,” including the presidential of-fice, would begin once the plan wascompleted and put into practice. It alsosaid the country would push for Seoul’sexpulsion in any negotiations on peaceon the Korean peninsula if the Southdidn’t apologize for the plan.

The warning came as a surprise sincethe North recently offered conciliatorygestures to the South, including a pro-posal Thursday to discuss resumingstalled joint tour programs.

Seoul expressed regret over theNorth’s threat, which it said was drivenby unconfirmed media reports.

South Korea has reportedly drawnup a military operations plan with theUnited States to cope with possible

emergencies in North Korea. SouthKorea’s Defense Ministry has consis-tently declined to comment about theexistence of such a plan.

North Korea occasionally issuesstatements that include threats to de-stroy South Korea. Authorities in Seoulmonitor them carefully but usually takethem in stride.

South Korea’s Defense Ministrysaid the North had held annual wintermilitary training but had no informa-tion on Kim’s latest military inspection.A ministry official said there had beenno suspicious activities by the North’smilitary in recent days.

Another South Korean governmentofficial downplayed the significance ofthe North’s latest joint drill, saying itappeared to be part of routine training. The official said it was the first timethe North’s media had reported Kim’sinspection of a joint drill of the threearmed services.

Both officials spoke on condition ofanonymity, citing department policy.

The two Koreas remain technicallyat war because the 1950-53 Korean Warended in a truce, not a peace treaty.

Villamor, his wife and three childrenshared their shanty with two other fami-lies.

He said his family decided to returnto their gutted home after running fromthe flames because they feared thatother families may stake a claim to theland if they moved to a nearby villagehall that was being turned into an evacu-ation center.

industrial sector is mechanism in theport,” he said.

MS Hidayat was received by thedirector general of customs, ThomasSugijata and the president director ofPelindo II, Richard Jose Lino.

Indonesia signed the ACFTA forimplementation as of January 1, 2010after signing a similar agreement withJapan before.

With the agreements manufactur-ing and agricultural products fromIndonesia could enter the partners’markets without tariff barriers.

However with them the country’sdomestic market could also be floodedby products from China and Japan if

the domestic industries could notcompete. An economist from stateUniversity of Indonesia, NinasaptiTriaswati, said the ACFTA would notbenefit all industrial sectors in thecountry.

“For some manufacturing indus-tries such as garment and footwearindustries the implementation of thefree trade agreement would eventhreaten continuity,” she said.

She said the onslaught of productsfrom China could threaten local prod-ucts. Therefore, she urged the gov-ernment to protect the continuity oflocal industries by postponing theimplementation of the free marketagreement for several industriespending their readiness for it.

“To support the effort the govern-ment has drawn up a number of poli-cies, including a regulation on enhanc-ing the use of domestic products,” he

LUXEMBOURG - Europe will struggleto copy US President Barack Obama’s plan totax banks in order to recoup bailout funds, theeuro group’s head said on Friday.

Obama “is doubtless right to propose themeasures he has,” Luxembourg Prime Minis-ter Jean-Claude Juncker told reporters, a dayafter Washington outlined a scheme to raise 90billion dollars (63 billion euros) in 10 years.

“We have to see in Europe, not collectivelybut on a country-by-country basis, whether wecan act in the same fashion,” he added, threedays before he is expected to be re-elected tolead the 16 countries that share the euro.

Juncker insisted he had no preconceivedidea on the issue but conceded that it would be“difficult to adopt a common approach because

The former French finance minister saidhe could not imagine lawmakers in developedcountries agreeing to any fresh bank rescues.

“I’m convinced that most parliaments, theCongress here in the United States, the NationalAssembly in France, Westminster in the UK,others, will be very reluctant, to say the least, togive money again to the financial sector,” theIMF chief said at a news conference in Wash-ington organized by the French AmericanChamber of Commerce.

WASHINGTON - US consumer pricesbarely rose in December amid a sluggish re-covery from recession, official data showedFriday, as falling wages pinched spendingthat drives most of the world’s largesteconomy.

The consumer price index raised lessthan expected in December, by 0.1 percentfrom November, the Labor Department re-ported in seasonally adjusted data.

Most analysts had forecast a strongerCPI rise of 0.2 percent.

The so-called “core” CPI, which ex-cludes food and energy prices and is used bythe Federal Reserve to forecast future infla-tion, rose 0.1 percent as expected.

Inflation “was broad-based, with the in-dexes for food, energy, and all items less foodand energy all posting modest increases,” theLabor Department said.

The year ended with the inflation rate at2.7 percent from a year ago, a sharp increaseover 0.1 percent inflation in 2008, the firstfull year of the worst downturn since theGreat Depression.

Inflation stood at 4.1 percent in Decem-ber 2007 as the economy officially enteredrecession.

Core 2009 inflation was 1.8 percent, withinthe Fed’s comfort zone on monetary policy.

“The US is still in the grip of intensedisinflationary forces, despite the basis ef-fect lifting the headline year-on-year rate. De-flation risk is real,” said Ian Shepherdson, chief US economist at High Frequency Eco-nomics.

“There is no indication that inflation iseven a remote danger, and the Fed’s aggres-sive credit expansion and low interest ratepolicy have not had the inflationary effectsthat some cri t ics feared,” said AndresCarbacho-Burgos at Moody’s Economy.com.

Brian Wesbury at First Trust Economicdisagreed, saying consumer prices rose 3.3percent annual rate in the final three monthsof the year.

“Investors and the Fed need to stop wor-rying so much about economic growth and

Tame inflation, falling wagessignal weak US recovery

start to show more concern about inflation,”he said.

The Labor Department said energy pricessurged 18.2 percent in 2009, the sharpest risesince 1979. Gasoline prices leapt 53.5 per-cent, an all-time record gain in the data se-ries that began in 1937.

The hefty increases came in comparisonwith rock-bottom levels in December 2008.

Food prices fell 0.5 percent over the year, the steepest decline since 1961.

“The only place where pressures arebuilding greatly is in energy. While demandremains weak, the price of oil have been ris-ing fairly sharply,” said Joel Naroff of NaroffEconomic Advisors.

Amid double-digit unemployment andthe loss of more than seven million jobs sincethe recession began, US workers saw theirpaychecks shrink last year.

Real average weekly earnings were un-changed in December from November, theLabor Department reported separately.

But on a 12-month basis, weekly earn-ings fell 1.6 percent, the worst pullback since1990, after rising 3.1 percent in 2008.

The inflation and wages readings camea day after the Commerce Department re-ported retail sales fell unexpectedly, by 0.3percent, in December, capping the worst yearon record for the spending that drives two-thirds of the country’s economy.

For all of 2009, retail sales plunged 6.2percent from a year ago, the steepest annualplunge since the data series began in 1992.

The Fed, in its Beige Book report on theeconomy Wednesday, said that because of thehigh level of unemployment, wage pressureswere “subdued” and overall inflationary pres-sures modest.

The US economy expanded 2.2 percentin the third quarter of 2009, after four quar-ters of contraction. The government is set torelease its initial estimate of fourth-quartergross domestic product on January 29.

The Fed and most economists expectdata to show continued growth in the fourthquarter and into 2010 but worry that high un-employment — at 10 percent in December —will curb consumer confidence and spending.

“The Hurt Locker,” a low-budget movie about an American bomb-disposal unit in Iraq, was named bestpicture on Friday at the Critics’ Choice Awards, an event that has an uncanny knack of foreshadowing Oscarsuccess. The movie’s director, Kathryn Bigelow, also was honored, beating a high-profile field that includedher ex-husband, “Avatar” filmmaker James Cameron — a duel she described as “sorta surreal.”

“Inglourious Basterds” won twoother awards: for director QuentinTarantino’s original screenplay andfor best ensemble. Along with the all-star musical “Nine,” it led the fieldwith 10 nominations. “Nine,” a ma-jor box-office bomb, went homeempty-handed. Other winners in-cluded Jason Reitman and SheldonTurner for their adapted screenplayfor “Up in the Air,” and Spanish film-maker Pedro Almodovar’s BrokenEmbraces” for foreign-language film.

The Critics’ Choice Awards, orga-nized by the 235 members of theBroadcast Film Critics Association inthe United States and Canada, haveestablished a reputation as the lead-ing barometer of Oscar success. In

the past 10 years, 80 percent of itsbest-picture winners went on to takeOscar gold. The success rate for di-rector, best actor and actress is 70percent. Backstage, the winners weredecidedly cagey about their Oscarchances ahead of the February 2nominations announcement.

“If we took the stem cells from onepig and multiplied it by a factor of amillion, we would need one millionfewer pigs to get the same amount ofmeat,” said Mark Post, a biologist atMaastricht University involved in theIn-vitro Meat Consortium, a networkof publicly funded Dutch research in-stitutions that is carrying out the ex-periments. Post describes the textureof the meat as sort of like scallop, firmbut a little squishy and moist. That’sbecause the lab meat has less proteincontent than conventional meat.

Several other groups in the U.S.,Scandinavia and Japan are also re-searching ways to make meat in thelaboratory, but the Dutch project is themost advanced, said Jason Matheny, who has studied alternatives to con-ventional meat at the Johns HopkinsBloomberg School of Public Health inBaltimore and is not involved in theDutch research. In the U.S., similarresearch was funded by NASA, whichhoped astronauts would be able togrow their own meat in space. But af-ter growing disappointingly thin sheetsof tissue, NASA gave up and decidedit would be better for its astronauts tosimply eat vegetarian.

To make pork in the lab, Post andcolleagues isolate stem cells from pigs’muscle cells. They then put those cellsinto a nutrient-based soup that helpsthe cells replicate to the desired num-ber. So far the scientists have only suc-ceeded in creating strips of meat about1 centimeter (a half inch) long; to makea small pork chop, Post estimates itwould take about 30 days of cell rep-

SAN FRANCISCO – A Geor-gia mother and her two daughterslogged onto Facebook from mo-bile phones last weekend andwound up in a startling place:strangers’ accounts with full ac-cess to troves of private informa-tion. The glitch — the result of arouting problem at the family’swireless carrier, AT&T — re-vealed a little known security flawwith far reaching implications foreveryone on the Internet, not justFacebook users.

In each case, the Internet losttrack of who was who, putting thewomen into the wrong accounts. It doesn’t appear the users couldhave done anything to stop it. Theproblem adds a dimension to re-searchers’ warnings that there aremany ways online information —from mundane data to dark secrets— can go awry. Several securityexperts said they had not heard ofa case like this, in which thewrong person was shown a Webpage whose user name and pass-word had been entered by some-one else. It’s not clear whethersuch episodes are rare or simplynot reported. But experts said suchflaws could occur on e-mail ser-vices, for instance, and that some-thing similar could happen on aPC, not just a phone.

“The fact that it did happen isproof that it could potentially hap-pen again and with something alot more important thanFacebook,” said Nathan Hamiel, founder of the Hexagon SecurityGroup, a research organization.Candace Sawyer, 26, says sheimmediately suspected somethingwas wrong when she tried to visither Facebook page Saturdaymorning. After typingFacebook.com into her Nokiasmart phone, she was taken intothe site without being asked forher user name or password. Shewas in an account that didn’t looklike hers. She had fewer friend re-quests than she remembered. Then she found a picture of thepage’s owner.

“He’s white — I’m not,” shesaid with a laugh. Sawyer loggedoff and asked her sister, Mari, 31,her partner in a dessert cateringcompany, and their mother, Fran,57, to see whether they had thesame problem on their phones.Mari landed inside anotherwoman’s page. Fran’s phone —which had never been used to ac-cess Facebook before — took herinside yet another stranger’s page, one belonging to a young womanfrom Indiana. They sent an e-mailto one of their own accounts toprove it. They were dumbfounded.

“I thought it was the phone —`Maybe this phone is just weirdand does magical, horrible thingsand I have to get rid of it,’” saidCandace Sawyer. The women, wholive together in East Point, Ga.,outside Atlanta, had recently up-

graded to the same model of phoneand all used the same carrier,AT&T. Sawyer contacted The As-sociated Press after reporting theproblem to Facebook and AT&T.The problem wasn’t in the phones. It was a flaw in the infrastructureconnecting the phones to theInternet. That illuminates a graveproblem. Generally Web sites andcomputers are compromised fromwithin. A hacker can get a Webpage or computers to run program-ming code that they shouldn’t. Butin this case, it was a security gapbetween the phone and the Web sitethat exposed strangers’ Facebookpages to the Sawyers.Misconfigured equipment, poorlywritten network software or othertechnical errors could have causedAT&T to fumble the informationflowing from the Sawyers’ phonesto Facebook and back.

Fortunately, Hamiel said, thevulnerability would be of limiteduse to a hacker interested in pull-ing off widespread mayhem, be-cause this hole would let him ac-cess only one account at a time.To do more damage the criminalwould have to pull off the unlikelyfeat of gaining full control of thepiece of equipment that routesInternet traffic to individual users.AT&T spokesman Michael Coesaid its wireless customers havelanded in the wrong Facebookpages in “a limited number of in-stances” and that a network prob-lem behind those episodes is be-ing fixed. The Sawyers experi-enced a different glitch. Coe saidan investigation points to a “mis-directed cookie.” A cookie is a filesome Web sites place on comput-ers to store identifying informa-tion — including the user namethat Facebook members wouldenter to access their pages. Coesaid technicians couldn’t figureout how the cookie had beenrouted to the wrong phone, lead-ing it into the wrong Facebookaccount.

London – Call it pork in a petri dish — a technique to turn pig stem cells into strips of meat that scientistssay could one day offer a green alternative to raising livestock, help alleviate world hunger, and save somepigs their bacon. Dutch scientists have been growing pork in the laboratory since 2006, and while they admitthey haven’t gotten the texture quite right or even tasted the engineered meat, they say the technology prom-ises to have widespread implications for our food supply.

In this handout photomade available on FridayJan. 15, 2010, a photomi-crograph of muscle tissueis seen. lication in the lab. There are tantalizing health pos-

sibilities in the technology.Fish stem cells could be used to

produce healthy omega 3 fatty ac-ids, which could be mixed with thelab-produced pork instead of theusual artery-clogging fats found inlivestock meat. “You could possiblydesign a hamburger that preventsheart attacks instead of causingthem,” Matheny said. Post said thestrips they’ve made so far could beused as processed meat in sausagesor hamburgers. Their main problemis reproducing the protein content inregular meat: In livestock meat, pro-tein makes up about 99 percent ofthe product; the lab meat is onlyabout 80 percent protein. The rest ismostly water and nucleic acids.

None of the researchers have actu-ally eaten the lab-made meat yet, butPost said the lower protein contentmeans it probably wouldn’t taste any-thing like pork. The Dutch researchersstarted working with pork stem cellsbecause they had the most experiencewith pigs, but said the technologyshould be transferable to other meats, like chicken, beef and lamb. Some ex-perts warn lab-made meats might havepotential dangers for human health.

“With any new technology, therecould be subtle impacts that need tobe monitored,” said EmmaHockridge, policy manager at SoilAssociation, Britain’s leading or-ganic organization. As with geneti-cally modified foods, Hockridge saidit might take some time to prove the

new technology doesn’t harm hu-mans. She also said organic farm-ing relies on crop and livestock ro-tation, and that taking animals outof the equation could damage theecosystem. Some experts doubtedlab-produced meat could evermatch the taste of real meat.

“What meat tastes like dependsnot just on the genetics, but whatyou feed the animals at particulartimes,” said Peter Ellis, a biochem-istry expert at King’s College Lon-don. “Part of our enjoyment of eat-ing meat depends on the very com-plicated muscle and fatstructure...whether that can be rep-licated is still a question.” If itproves possible, experts say grow-ing meat in laboratories instead ofraising animals on farmland woulddo wonders for the environment.

Hanna Tuomisto, who studies theenvironmental impact of food pro-duction at Oxford University saidthat switching to lab-produced meatcould theoretically lower green-house gas emissions by up to 95percent. Both land and water usewould also drop by about 95 per-cent, she said. “In theory, if all themeat was replaced by culturedmeat, it would be huge for the en-vironment,” she said. “One animalcould produce many thousands ofkilograms of meat.” In addition, labmeat can be nurtured with relativelyfew nutrients like amino acids, fatsand natural sugars, whereas live-stock must be fed huge amounts oftraditional crops.

Theworld number two Spaniard, who beatRoger Federer here last year in a grip-ping five-set final, admitted he was notthe favourite this time after his injurylayoff, but didn’t want to say who hethought was.

“We will see what happens, I don’tknow,” he said. “A lot of players can winright now. I don’t want to say everybody, but like 12 players, 13 players have agood chance.” Federer is obviously oneof them, as is Nadal, Andy Murray andNovak Djokovic, with NikolayDavydenko the form player havingbeaten the Spaniard in the Qatar Openfinal this month.

Nadal’s failure to win that tourna-ment means he comes into the openingGrand Slam of the season without a titlein eight months, with the last one com-ing on the Barcelona clay in April. Nadalsaid he hadn’t had bad results, but wasjust struggling to get back to winningtournaments. “I didn’t have bad resultsthe last five months, but I didn’t haveperfect results,” he said.

“But I played, I was there (for) all thetournaments. Sure, it’s true, playing againstthe top players I didn’t have very good re-sults, but I wasn’t playing bad. I just needa little bit more.” With injuries hamperingthe 23-year-old for much of last year, hefaces a telling time at the Australian Open, which should provide a guide as to his cur-rent standing in men’s tennis. He insists theconfidence is there, it’s just a question ofonce again winning a final.

“The confidence? The only way tohave confidence is winning matches, winning important matches. I did that inAbu Dhabi and I did that in Doha,” hesaid, referring to his two warm-up tour-

clubs. The Cavs began the second half of their sched-

ule with their 31st victory, tying the defendingchampion Lakers for the most in the league. At31-11, they are off to their third-best start after 42games in the franchise’s 40-year history — threegames worse than the club-record start they hadlast season. The Cavaliers, who came in holdingopponents to league-lows of 34.7 points in the paintper game and 43.4 percent field goal shooting, lim-ited the short-handed Clippers to 30 points in thepaint with the 7-foot Kaman out of the picture. But Los Angeles shot 59.7 percent from the field.

Los Angeles has lost all four games withoutits leading scorer, who is averaging 20.4 pointsand 9.4 rebounds and was last week’s Western Con-ference player of the week. The Clippers wereoutrebounded 32-27, becoming the 16th straightCleveland opponent to lose the battle of the boards. The Clippers led by as many as 13 points withabout 3 minutes left in the third quarter. The Cava-liers kept chipping away in the fourth, but Butler’shot perimeter shooting kept them at bay until West’stip-in gave Cleveland a 100-99 lead with 2:51 re-maining.

Butler paced the Clippers to a 56-47 halftimelead with 19 points on 7-for-9 shooting. James wentto the bench with 2:38 left in the first quarter afterpicking up his second foul, and by the time he re-turned with 6:43 remaining in the half, Los Ange-les had its five-point lead reduced to three. About4 minutes into the second quarter, West had someimpromptu fun with a heckling fan who calls him-self “Clipper Darrell” and shows up at every homegame wearing a shiny and gaudy blue-and-redcostume. When West went to the free throw linefor the first time, Darrell went into his trademarkinsult: “U-G-L-Y, you ain’t got no alibi.

West broke into a big smile and clapped hishands rhythmically — with the ball still in his hands— and the Cavaliers’ bench broke up laughing ashe made the first and missed the second. Thisstrange interlude played out again 34 seconds later— only this time, West made both, and his team-mates leaped out of their seats and celebrated asthough they had just won on a buzzer-beater.

cal kind of game where putting the pressurea bit higher we could win it. We started thesecond much the same way, but two penal-ties in five minutes changed everything. Thematch seemed lost, but once again the ladsfought back with great spirit to earn a point.

“In the last half-hour if Bari were re-duced to 10 men and didn’t have a singlecentre-back to put on in Bonucci’s place, then we can say the referee had a big impacton the result. “We studied Bari and knewthey attacked with four players going for-ward. We kept our defence high on purpose,as if we had gone deeper then losing the ballwould’ve been disastrous. This is why Baridid not score on the counter-attack, they werekept under control except for an individualerror and a dubious spot-kick.”

“I say again that a mistake can be madeon a penalty, but why was Bonucci not sentoff? If the referee decides it is a penalty withPandev one-on-one with the goalkeeper, then how can that not be a red card?”Mourinho also had less than kind words forBalotelli, who was visibly annoyed when hewas substituted. “In defensive terms,Balotelli was useless. He needs to workharder at closing down the man or the spaceand tonight he did neither.”

But the defensive frailty that hashampered Liverpool throughout the campaign wasexposed again in the 90th minute when Robert Huthscrambled in an equaliser after the visitors had failedto clear a corner.

Having been denied what appeared to be a clearpenalty in the first half, Liverpool suffered furtherfrustration when Dirk Kuyt headed against the postin the fifth minute of injury time. “It feels like a de-feat,” admitted Kuyt. “We aren’t playing the bestfootball at the moment, but I thought we fought re-ally hard for this result, and to concede in the lastminute and even miss a great chance in the lastminute is unbelievable.”

City had begun life under Mancini with fourstraight wins but they flunked their first serious testat Goodison Park. We were toocautious for the situation, althoughyou can say too cautious and westill ended up winning the champi-onship. I think we should have beena little bit more aggressive with ourstrategy, and also myself, I shouldhave been more aggressive.”

“It was a position I had neverbeen in before. It was something Ireally learned through the season, and it is amazing that you learn somuch when you are fighting for achampionship - a championshipthat is so important to you. So it wasa very up and down season, andwhen we got to Brazil, and also acouple of races before Brazil, werealised we started to need to getaggressive again and we really hadto fight for this.”

He added: “It wasn’t just goingto come to us. The thing is there wassome negative publicity for acouple of races, but we never for-got that we had such a lead in thechampionship. should prioritise retaining Casey Stoner over chasing a dealwith Valentino Rossi. Rossi has been linked with a switch toDucati for 2011, especially after he intimated that Yamahacould not continue giving him and Jorge Lorenzo equal sta-tus and should nominate a clear number one.

But at the launch of Ducati’s 2010 contender, Domenicaliinsisted that the team was not considering changing its cur-rent line-up of Stoner and Nicky Hayden - especially as hereckons Stoner is the championship’s greatest talent. “I thinkthat Casey is talent-wise the strongest rider in the world,”said Domenicali.

“Nicky gave us a wonderful lesson on life and manage-ment. Our motto is ‘never give up’ and Nicky taught us onceagain that we must never give up, so to think about some-thing different with such a team is not appropriate. Howeverit is true that our agreements are going to expire mid-season.So between my will and what is going to happen, there maybe some differences.”

“If it’s possible to hold on to Casey or to take Valentino, then the answer is simple: we can try. To ask a manager pub-licly what they would like to do is a bit embarrassing. Forme if it’s a choice between one or the other, personally Ihave no doubt that we have the rider with the highest talent,so for me the priority is to hold on to Casey. But since theanswer cannot stop here, could Casey and Valentino go welltogether? You would have to ask them. It’s like asking a [foot-ball] manager would they like to have Maradona and Platiniin the same team, of course, why not, we would like to, butthen if the wedding is successful or not, we don’t know. Butthe team has two strong riders and we would like this tocontinue, that’s quite clear.”

Domenicali denied that Stoner’s mid-season illness in2009 had given Ducati cause to doubt him. “One would haveto be mad to have doubts about Casey’s skills,” he said. “Itwas an extremely complicated year for him. He did not un-
