WASHINGTON — It’s a bro-centric year for movies added to the prestigious National Film Registry. Two of the most popular male-bond-ing movies of all time — “Top Gun” and “The Shawshank Redemption” — are being added to the collection of films preserved by the Library of Congress, the library announced Wednesday.

They’ll be joined by an all-male quartet that’s about to get an all-female reboot — the gang from “Ghostbusters.”

Each year, the library picks 25 movies to preserve for their cultural, historic or artistic importance. The list is always eclectic and, as usual, includes titles that are older, experi-

mental or otherwise obscure. And then there are the crowd-

pleasers. “The Shawshank Redemp-tion” is a mainstay atop the Internet Movie Database poll of the top 250 movies of all time.

Its exalted ranking — “The God-father” places second — is somewhat curious. “Shawshank,” a deliber-ately paced, well-crafted prison drama about the friendship between a wrongly convicted man (Tim Robbins) and a savvy fellow inmate (Morgan Freeman), was considered a box-office disappointment upon its 1994 release. It was the first feature for director Frank Darabont, who adapted the screenplay from a novella by Stephen King. Nominated for

seven Oscars, it won zero. But its popularity increased thanks

to home video and countless airings on cable television, where viewers came to appreciate the elaborate plot, poignant score by Thomas Newman and Freeman’s soothing voice-over narration.

The almost comically macho “Top Gun” (1986) was an instant block-buster and remains a cultural 1980s touchstone. Applications to naval flight schools soared post-release, and it elevated Tom Cruise to a new level of stardom. Its visual style, from action maestro Tony Scott, helped influence a generation of directors.

Two years before “Top Gun,” di-rector Ivan Reitman’s “Ghostbusters”

was also a box-office smash, setting a standard for high-concept, effects-driven comedy that was rarely dupli-cated. Reitman’s gift was allowing improvisational comedians including Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Rick Moranis to riff their way through the movie’s ridiculous spectral set pieces.

“Making ‘Ghostbusters’ was one of the great joys of my life,” Reitman said in a statement. “It’s an honor to know that a movie that begins with a ghost in a library now has a spot on the shelves of the Library of Congress.”

A new version of “Ghostbusters,” with a female spook-hunting crew led by Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCa-rthy, will be released in July.

The film registry, which began in 1989, now includes 675 titles. The library works to ensure that original 35mm negatives will be preserved, either by the library itself or another organization. The library maintains the negatives at its vast audio-visual conservation center built inside a Cold War-era bunker in Culpeper, Virginia.

The oldest film added this year dates to 1894. Known as the “Edison Kinetoscopic Record of a Sneeze” or simply “The Sneeze,” the frames were captured by W.K.L. Dickson, who led Thomas Edison’s inventor team. Still images were published by Harper’s magazine, but it wasn’t seen as a movie until 1953. (ap)

E! said Wednesday it had approved a six-episode series where one of the network’s favorite sisters will be mentor people trying to turn their life around.

She calls the series “Revenge Body with Khloe Kardashian.” Looking great, she says, is always the best revenge for getting back at an ex. The network did not say when the show will be on the air. (ap)

Cranberries singer O’Riordan admits assaulting Irish police

DUBLIN — The lead singer of the Irish rock band The Cranberries, Do-lores O’Riordan, has pleaded guilty to assaulting three policemen and a flight attendant during an alleged psychotic episode last year.

O’Riordan didn’t speak during Wednesday’s court hearing in western Ireland. Her lawyer said she accepted evidence of the assault and obstruction charges facing her.

Judge Patrick Durcan ordered the singer to write letters of apology to those she attacked. Durcan said he would sentence her early next year. She faces possible penalties ranging from a cash fine to six months’ imprisonment.

A cabin attendant testified that O’Riordan stomped on her ankle as the Aer Lingus flight from New York landed in Shannon, Ireland, in November 2014. Police said she spat in their faces, head-butted one and kicked the others. (ap)

PILES of garbage at Suwung landfill always increases day after day. PT NOEI expected to be able to overcome the waste problem into elec-

Until now there is no indication of termina-tion against the cooperation for the default of PT NOEI for ten years.

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. COVER STORYSudikerta mentioned that PT

NOEI has just produced gas from the landfill waste management at Suwung, while the electrical energy as much as 12 MW as promised is never realized. Actu-ally, the energy has been prom-ised to have been materialized in 2013. Sarbagita government was asked to be responsible for the breach.

“Until now, it has been neg-ligent, breaching the contract. Sarbagita government should immediately take anticipative measures by terminating the cooperation contract between PT NOEI and Sarbagita government. Provincial government only facilitates because the authority lies in the district / municipality government,” he said.

Sudikerta added that Bali provincial government can have taken the efforts of termination of the cooperation. However, the effort can only be done after the Sarbagita government hands over the management of the Suwung landfill to Bali provincial govern-ment. He said that the governor has actually sent a letter related to this matter. But until now there is no response from the Sarbagita government.

“The letter of the governor has not been responded so far and I am waiting for it. If it is not answered I will summon them again as the direction of the governor regarding the waste management of Sarbagita. I think Denpasar has also been incon-venient with waste problems of Sarbagita. Moreover, in the sea-sons of high volume of rubbish, the challenges faced are severe,” he said. (rin)

The Head of the DKP Badung, Putu Eka Merthawan, said that his agency has alerted three loaders, four garbage trucks and 26 personnel at the location. A number of sanitation crews have been alerted from the morning until late afternoon.

“The coastal areas under our supervision include the Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, Petitenget and Jimbaran Beach. We have announced first alert for the preparation of marine debris due to natural phenomena of the annual western cyclone,” said Eka Merthawan.

According to him, the janitors deployed to handle the marine debris are placed on a number of main beaches such as the Legian, Seminyak and Kuta. “They (janitors--Ed) are placed on the main beaches, such as the Legian, Seminyak, Kuta,” he said.

This Sempidi origin official said that the personnel deployed to handle the marine debris will be increased if the status increased to the garbage emergency. “It is possible that the number of officers deployed to be increased. It will be carried out when the status is increased to garbage emergency,” he said.

He mentioned that the janitors to be deployed in the garbage emergency situation will be increased to 1,000 personnel. They will be alerted for a whole day divided into two shifts. “We ask people not to be panic or anxiety as well as not mutually blame because it is a natural phenomenon occurred regularly every year. However, we have prepared a special SOP to address these issues,” he explained.

Eka Merthawan admitted that the phenomenon of western cy-clones delays compared to the previous year. “This year it delays from the usual period in November, but it just appeared in December. By and large, the garbage emergency has already occurred in December,” he concluded. (par)

A new capsule collection for Salvatore Ferragamo by the luxury Colombian shoe designer Edgardo Osorio reaches back into the com-pany archives to revisit Holly-wood’s Golden era, when the young shoemaker from southern Italy built his business by making shoes for films and then winning over actors and actresses as customers to his Hollywood Boot Shop.

Ferragamo quickly became known as “shoemaker to the stars,” pioneering the powerful link be-tween fashion and the booming film industry.

Those customers included Judy Garland, Mae West and Monroe, said Ferragamo’s grandson James, the brand’s accessory product di-rector. He said Monroe bought the iconic pumps in the 1940s from a shop on Madison Avenue in New York City for $45 a pair, and has the receipt to prove it.

“The Marilyn Monroe walk re-quired a modification to have that

wiggle effect,” Ferragamo said, saying one heel was several mil-limeters higher than the other.

For the capsule collection re-leased in time for the holiday season, Osorio, who started designing shoes at Ferragamo before launching his own Florence-based brand Aquaz-zura, created a contemporary Mari-lyn-inspired pump with sheer netted panels for a sexy reveal. He also referenced the famed 1938 Judy Gar-land “Rainbow” wedge with a steep stiletto heel and a feathery winged rainbow accent on the ankles.

“It is not literal at all,” said Mas-similiano Giornetti, Ferragamo’s creative director. “At the same time, it has the same spirit and the same approach that Salvatore Ferragamo had for developing the wedge for Judy Garland.”

The collection was launched as part of the luxury brand’s 100-year anniversary celebration of Ferrag-amo’s connection with Hollywood and is meant to be the first of a se-

ries of capsule collections in other areas across the group from jewelry to women’s handbags and perhaps menswear, tapping young talent and encouraging experimentation.

While Salvatore Ferragamo imported to Hollywood some of southern Italy’s joyful colors and free spirit, Giornetti said Osorio’s collection aims to offer looks for women in different moments of the day, from ballet flats with the Ferragamo bow to gladiator sandals and glamorous booties.

The looks are sexy, with stiletto heels and straps that wrap up the calf, but are also meant to be com-fortable, featuring lightweight ma-terials like cork, and recalling some of Ferragamo’s most recognized style points, from stylized bows to polka dots.

“Edgardo shares with me and the Ferragamo family not only the same aesthetic principals, but also the same sort of lifestyle that is so important to Ferragamo’s very dynamic consumer, who is always looking for quality, beautiful Ital-ian craftsmanship and I will also add, an ironic twist,” Giornetti said. As field monitoring on Wednes-day (Dec. 16), the making of long storage has been completed along with its guardrail. The Mati River estuary was formerly a land dredged to a depth of six meters. The normalization along 1.7 km with an area of 50 meters has been completely worked on. In addition, the inspection pathway has also entered final stage.

The Head of the Badung High-ways and Irrigation Agency (BMP), I.B. Surya Suamba, when met hoped that the project in the Patasari neighborhood can overcome flood issue around Kuta, Seminyak and surrounding areas. “During the re-cent heavy rains, the estuary of the Mati River was only half-full, while before being normalized it has over-flowed and flooded,” he said.

According to him, the project costing IDR 47 billion is targeted for completion on December 21. “So

far, approximately 1.2 km of groove estuary of the Mati River has not been normalized. The end of the Mati River estuary is the Benoa Bay,” he said. He admitted the most difficult task is to overcome sedimentation. Every day, the estuary of the Mati River always receives debris from various creeks in Denpasar and Badung.

Nevertheless, the arrangement of Mati River has proven to be capable of overcoming the floods in Kuta subdistrict. The length of the Mati River is approximately 13 km. It halves Denpasar city and Badung from Jalan Kebo Iwa Denpasar to Seminyak, Legian and Kuta.

“But when discarding rubbish, people even discarded mattress into the river so that it clogged again. Believe it or not, when we make normalization we also found the wreckage of refrigerator,” he said.

Surya is optimistic that the areas along the streams of the Mati River

estuary are safe. “Now we educate people not to litter. No matter how sophisticated the technology is, when people continue to litter, it will turn useless,” he said.

As is known, the Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika, has stopped the long storage project because it belongs to Protection Block of Ngurah Rai Grand Forest Park. Actually, the policy of Bali government to stop the disaster management project is contrary to the letter from the Directorate General of Natural Resources Con-servation and Ecosystems, Ministry of Environment and Forestry De-cree No.S.431/VII-KKBHL/2015 dated June 29, 2015 regarding the normalization of Mati River in the Protection Block of the Ngurah Rai Grand Forest Park, Badung.

After going through a long process, the governor finally is-sued a letter number: 522/1017 / DFS-4 dated September 7, 2015. It addressed to the Minister of Envi-ronment and Forestry regarding the submission of application for the development of long storage. In es-sence, the flood prevention project could be resumed. GIANYAR - Central government approved the revitalization plan of the Sukawati art market. The gov-ernment allocates a budget worth IDR 60 billion from the state budget in order to make the Sukawati art market comply with the Indonesian National Standard (SNI).

Certainty of the central govern-ment approval was expressed by the Head of the Gianyar Industry and Trade Agency, I Wayan Suamba. He said that the final verification of the Sukawati art market was made by on Director General of Domestic Trade at the Ministry of Commerce, Sri Agustina, Tuesday (Dec. 15). “Result of the verification by the Director General indicates that the revitalization of Sukawati art market has been approved with the budget of IDR 60 billion,” said Suamba.

To meet the SNI, a total of 40 items must be completed by the market. They include the facili-ties of kiosk and adequate parking space, children’s playground, a holy place, garden and lactation room. Special parking space, according to the plan, will use basement to ac-commodate the existing vehicles.

“In essence, the fund will be used to improve the quality of traditional market. As we know, currently there are still some problems. For example, there is inadequate park-ing space, no garden and in general the market condition is still fairly slob,” he said.

To implement the revitaliza-tion, the existing market building will soon be demolished. Suamba

mentioned that in this revitalization there is no additional land because the current one is still considered sufficient. “It does not need new land because it will use the exist-ing land. The art market and public market spread almost on 7,000 square meters. So, later it will be dismantled and built with the new one. During the construction period, the merchants will be relocated to Gelumpang. At the location, there are 1.6 hectares of land owned by customary village to build a public market,” he said.

Further, Suamba claimed to be unable to ensure when the devel-opment process will be carried out. But he expected the revitalization program can be realized in 2016. He claimed to be proactive in following up the market revitalization plan.

Submission of the funding pro-posal for the revitalization of the Sukawati art market is made this year. When submitted on Novem-ber 10, the Regent of Gianyar A.A. Gde Agung Bharata presented the revitalization plan to central government. The next process is verification and the one on Tuesday was the final verification stage.

Sukawati art market is one of the well known traditional markets to overseas. Unfortunately, tourist visits to the market established in 1983 continues to decrease. Ac-cording to a number of legislators, such condition happens due to high competition against modern markets offering similar craft items and the less orderly market condi-tion. (kmb25)

count the valuation of our exports, expects the economy to grow by 0.7 percent in 2016, by 1.9 percent in 2017, and by 2.4 percent in 2018. I want to draw your attention to the fact that all that is calculated with an oil price of $50 per barrel. Now, the rate is lower and volatility is very high.

We will not be in a hurry to intro-duce changes to the budget as it would entail cuts in social spending. How-ever, the government, of course, has been preparing different scenarios.”

INVESTORS“Investors, understanding the re-

ality of our economy, are starting to show interest in working here.”

OIL PRICE“We had calculated next year’s

budget based on $50 per barrel. This is a very optimistic valuation today. Now it’s already $38. That’s why we will have to correct some-thing there.”

CRISIS“The Russian economy has

passed the crisis. At least, the peak of the crisis.”(ap)

TOKYO — U.S. Ambassador to Japan Caroline Kennedy defended on Thursday a controversial proposal to relocate a U.S. Marine Corps base on Okinawa in southern Japan as the best of many options consid-

ered.In a rare news conference in Tokyo, she

also expressed confidence that the U.S. Con-gress would ratify the Trans-Pacific Partner-ship, a trade pact with 12 nations, including Japan and the United States.

“Trade agreements are never easy to pass, but they always do,” she said at the Japan National Press Club. “President Obama is absolutely committed to this agreement ... so I have no doubt that when this all comes together, that TPP will pass.”

In Okinawa, the plan to move the Futenma air station to a less congested area has run into stiff opposition from residents and Okinawan officials who want it taken off their island completely.(ap)

SINGARAJA - Buleleng district with regional topography having the sea and mountain is often threatened by natural disasters like landslides, floods, cyclones and tidal waves. To anticipate them, the Buleleng Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) opens a command post of disaster preparedness in subdistrict. The mapping and dissemination of di-saster response has been intensively conducted to educate people so that they can be responsive and alert to natural disasters.

Two types of disasters frequently hitting the northern region of Bali are landslides and floods. Further, the two

disasters are then categorized into the highly vulnerable that frequently happens and the moderately vulner-able that does not happen on a regular basis. The areas belonging to the highly vulnerable to floods include 26 locations in Tejakula, Sawan, Buleleng, Sukasada, Seririt and Ger-okgak subdistrict. The moderately vulnerable category is recorded at 22 locations spreading in the subdistrict of Tejakula, Seririt, Busungbiu and Gerokgak.

Then, the landslide categorized into the highly vulnerable covers 12 locations namely in the subdistrict of Kubutambahan, Sawan, Sukasada

and Banjar. The moderately vulner-able category is recorded to happen at 18 locations namely in the sub-district of Tejakula, Kubutambahan, Sukasada and Seririt. Other than these two types of disaster, the region of Buleleng is also potentially hit by tidal waves. This happens because North Bali has the longest coastline in Bali, so that this condition should be alerted.

To anticipate fallen trees, es-pecially in congested traffic lanes and road section to tourist destina-tion, the BPBD Buleleng and the Sanitation and Landscaping Agency (DKP) will trim shade trees of old

age and endangering road users. As the mapping carried out, the hazardous shade trees spreading across the Singaraja-Bedugul and Singaraja-Gilimanuk road sections will be cut down.

Chief Executive of the BPBD Buleleng, I Ketut Yasa, said at his office on Wednesday (Dec. 16/) that since the rainy season his agency has conducted a precaution. The measures taken started from mapping of disas-ter-prone areas and dissemination of information on the disaster-prone areas to residents to be alerted. Resi-dents are also asked to evacuate to a safe area when heavy rain or strong

winds hit. To facilitate coordination in case of disaster, the BPBD started to open a disaster preparedness post located in the yard of the BPBD on Jalan Singaraja—Seririt, Pemaron. Besides, similar post is also alerted in each subdistrict.

Additionally, at the road sections belonging to the province in the border have also been coordinated by placing a heavy equipment of the Bali Public Works. On the national road in the border of Pancasari and Tabanan has been alerted heavy equipment that is ready to evacuate in case there is a landslide hampering the road. (kmb38)

Chief of the HNSI Jembrana, Made Widanayasa, recently said that the majority of coastal land commonly used to moor their boats has changed into the con-

crete border wall. “A few locations have been marginalized and they are powerless because the land belongs to others,” he said. With the reason of disturbing the view

of villa, the boats of fishermen are marginalized.

When the land has sold out, fishermen are forced to moor their boat away from previous location. Some fishermen even bring home their boat. On that account, according to him, it is required a guarantee that they are not treated like that. The HNSI Jembrana supports the rulemaking to raise their status like the subak

(Balinese traditional irrigation cooperative).

A presumption often emerges that fishermen cannot grow because there is gap in terms of assistance compared to the agricultural sector like subak. Subak always gets as-sistance in the form of fertilizers and others. At this time there is indeed assistance for fishermen each year either from the Minis-try of Maritime Affairs or district

government. But according to him it cannot cover all the fishermen at once. Actually fishermen face many obstacles and have high risk job, starting from drowning to the threat of fish famine.

Based on the data in the Jem-brana Maritime, Fisheries and Fishery Agency in 2013 there are 10,022 fishermen. They rely on the fish catch in the waters of Jembrana and Bali. (kmb26)

NEGARA - Dwindling land area for boat mooring at a num-ber of villages is complained by traditional fishermen. Many coastal areas are controlled by land owners so that fishing boats are not allowed to moor. Related to this issue, the Fishermen Association of Indonesia (HNSI) of Jembrana supports the making of legal protection for fishermen to do their activities.

The ashram program was opened by Chief of the Buleleng Custom-ary Village Small Assembly, Ketut Alit Sutana, attended by subdistrict secretary Gede Ardenen, and rep-resentative of Buleleng customary village. Participating hamlets in the program are the Kaliuntu hamlet, Jaw hamlet, Bali hamlet, Kampung Anyar and Kampung Baru.

Committee Chairman, Wayan Duduk, said that the Hindu ashram program of teenagers is a habitually held by the Buleleng customary vil-lage each year. It is held to increase the understanding on the teach-ings of Hinduism regarding the philosophy, ethics and rituals. It is important because when learning at school the students are given more

emphasis on theory and education. To that end, in the ashram program the emphasis are given on practice in applying the teachings of Hindu philosophy, ethics and rituals. The topics highlighted in the ashram education include the preparation of ritual and psalmody, wickerwork, preach and dissemination on the mitigation of HIV/AIDS.

The resource persons presented in the program are Made Wirtana, Bayu Hermawan, Jro Dalang Ru-gada, Made Riko Wibawa, Made Sudiana and Putu Sukiani. “Ashram education is very important because teenagers at school are only given theory and in this opportunity we’d like to teach the practice of the Hindu philosophy, ethics and ritu-

als,” he said.Chairman of the Buleleng Cus-

tomary Village Small Assembly, Ketut Alit Sutana, on that occasion invited all the teenagers to always be aware of the Hindu teaching as

a guide in daily life. The under-standing on Hindu teachings is very important in the face of the current globalization that is very vulnerable to give negative impacts on teenagers. “I think this ashram

education becomes an opportunity to fortify our children to always refer to Hinduism, so that they can avoid negative activities due to the influence of current globalization,” he said. (kmb38)

BUSINESS

WELLINGTON - Big-spending tour-ists have helped the New Zealand economy grow faster than expected, with official figures Thursday showing gross domestic product accelerated 0.9 percent in the July-September quarter.

Annual economic growth in the 12 months to September was 2.3 percent, weighed down by lower figures earlier in the year on the back of slumping dairy prices.

Statistics New Zealand said the quarterly increase -- which was up from a revised 0.3 percent in the previous quarter -- was

driven by manufacturing and growth in service industries.

Higher visitor numbers boosted retail trade and accommodation services, which were up 1.6 percent in the quarter, while the services sector as a whole -- account-ing for 70 percent of the economy -- rose 0.9 percent.

“The service industries were fuelled by greater domestic demand and spending by international visitors. Nine of the 11 service industries reported increases this quarter,” national accounts manager Gary Dunnet said.

Finance Minister Bill English attributed the softer first half of the year to the impact of lower global dairy prices on New Zea-land, the world’s leading dairy exporter.

The central bank has since eased the official cash rate four times to reach a record low 2.5 percent to spur the stalling economy.

“New Zealand is a confident, open economy that responds quickly to interna-tional fluctuations and we are seeing that in the more positive performance that has occurred since July,” English said.

There was a mixed picture for the goods-

producing industries, with an increase in manufacturing partly offset by a decrease in construction.

Manufacturing grew 2.8 percent in the September quarter due to the largest increase in food, beverage, and tobacco production since March 2012.

Production, domestic consumption, and exports of food and beverage products all increased. The construction industry was down 2.9 percent.

The New Zealand dollar rose slightly to 0.6801 US cents following release of the figures. (afp)

The Fed coupled its first rate hike in nine years with a signal that further increases will likely be made slowly as the economy strengthens further and inflation rises from undesirably low lev-els. Wednesday’s action signaled the central bank’s belief that the economy has finally regained enough strength 6½ years after the Great Recession ended to withstand modestly higher borrowing rates.

“The Fed’s decision today reflects our confidence in the U.S. economy,” Chair Janet Yellen said at a news conference.

The Fed said in a statement after its latest meeting that it was lifting its key rate by a quarter-point to a range of 0.25 percent to 0.5 percent. Its move ends an extraordinary seven-year period of near-zero borrowing rates. But the Fed’s statement suggested that rates would remain historically low well into the future, saying it expects “only gradual increases.”

“The Fed reaffirmed that the pace of rate hikes would be slow,” James Marple, senior economist at TD Economics wrote in a research note. “The Fed’s expectations for rate hikes next year are set alongside a relatively cautious and entirely achievable economic outlook.”

Stocks closed up sharply higher. The Dow Jones industrial average, which had been up modestly before the announcement, gained 224 points, or 1.3 percent, for the day.

The bond market didn’t react much. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose slightly to 2.29 percent.

Rates on mortgages and car loans aren’t expected to rise much soon. The Fed’s benchmark rate doesn’t directly affect them. Long-term mortgages, for example, tend to track 10-year U.S. Treasury yields, which will likely stay low as long as inflation does and investors keep buying Treasurys.

But rates on some other loans, like credit cards and home equity credit lines, will likely rise, though probably only slightly as long as the Fed’s rate hikes remain modest.

Shortly after the Fed’s announcement, major banks began an-nouncing that they were raising their prime lending rate from 3.25 percent to 3.50 percent. The prime rate is a benchmark for some types of consumer loans such as home equity loans. Wells Fargo was the first bank to announce the rate hike. (ap)

ficers also have started receiving a salary. If nothing changes, each ex-tension officer will receive a salary worth IDR 1.7 million plus health insurance (BPJS) allowance.

“As of July 1, they will be ready until December 2016, and in 2017 will be evaluated and discussed whether this program will continue or not. Hopefully, it can continue be-cause coaching cannot just take place for a year,” he said. (kmb32)

His family and colleagues say he was killed by a secret operative from the Islamic State group who befriended him before he struck. The message from IS was clear: Its enemies are not safe, even across borders.

More than a month after the slay-ing of Abdelqader and his friend Fares Hamadi, the media collective that Abdelqader belonged to — which secretly documents life at the heart of the Islamic State group’s self-proclaimed caliphate — has been forced into deep hiding.

IS claimed responsibility for the murders in a video message warning that “every apostate will be slaughtered silently.” It was a grim riff on the media collective’s name — Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently, a reference to the Syrian city of Raqqa that has become syn-onymous with IS and its efforts to build a caliphate.

Last month, the activist media group collected the 2015 Committee to Protect Journalists’ International Press Freedom Award for its work in one of the most terrifying cities of the world, monitoring IS and countering its steady stream of pro-paganda with factual accounts.

Their reports from Raqqa have tackled everything from the con-

scription of children to the sexual slavery of Yazidi women brought from Iraq. They have documented public executions, flagged the death of Western hostages, and tracked the bombs dropped by the Syrian regime, the US, France and Russia.

Now the Oct. 29 killings of Ab-delqader and Hamadi raise concerns about the safety of anti-IS activists in Turkey, a country that only recently grasped the scale of the terror threat within its own borders.

The killings extended the reach of the campaign IS already wages against the collective. In the mosques of Raqqa, Friday sermons regularly feature diatribes against the activ-ists. IS executed three men this year that it accused of belonging to the network, although members said they actually were the father and friends of activists. On Wednesday, an activist with the group, Ahmed Mohamed al-Mousa was killed in the northwest Syrian province of Idlib by masked assailants.

“They have threatened all of us,” says Abdelaziz Hamza, a co-founder of Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Si-lently, who traveled to the U.S. in November to receive the journalism award. “We don’t know who could be the next one.” Abdelqader, 22, and Hamadi, 20, were murdered

by Islamic State operatives in the southern Turkish city of Sanliurfa on a balmy night that the two friends thought would be perfect for relax-ing with a water pipe.

The media activists say the man who boasts he masterminded the attack was a familiar face — Tlass al-Surur, a wide-eyed scrawny young man who had arrived from Raqqa a few months earlier. They say Surur claimed he had come to Turkey to seek work and slowly won Abdelqader’s trust, enough to carry out regular visits to his home.

All Syrian media activists, whether they are documenting the daily grind of atrocities committed by President Bashar al-Assad’s gov-ernment or the sensational violence carried out by IS, take precautions.

Abdelqader was careful, with a sharp sense of digital security and a general distrust of strangers. He masked his identity by using the pseud-onym Baz al-Furati when dealing with Arab-language news networks. But IS was cunning. Surur cultivated a friend-ship with Abdelqader in Turkey over the course of months.

Some say Surur lured Abdelqader by introducing himself as an IS de-fector, which would have presented the prospect of an irresistible trove of information. But Abdelqader’s brother Ahmed insists the ruse was less elaborate, saying Ibrahim sim-ply warmed to Surur.

Ibrahim, after all, also was origi-nally from Raqqa. He, too, was try-ing to make a new life for himself in Turkey, while keeping close tabs on his native Syria.

“That was enough for Tlass to get close or attempt to get close to Ibrahim,” said Ahmed Abdelqader, who spent many nights in the fam-ily’s home with Surur. “Ibrahim had a good heart. He cared for the men and women of his country.”

Ibrahim’s murder was carefully orchestrated, friends and family believe; they suspect that Hamadi, who joined the activist group Eye on Homeland one month before his death to design images and logos, happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time.

His only sin was that he was a friend of Ibrahim and that he would go everywhere with him,” Abdelqader said. “What confirms that they had come to take revenge specifically on Ibrahim is that his body was stabbed more than 40 times.” (ap)

SEOUL — A Seoul court on Thursday acquitted a Japanese re-porter of defaming South Korea’s president by reporting that she was spending time with a man during a deadly ferry disaster last year.

The ruling by the Seoul Central District Court comes as President Park Geun-hye faces criticism that she has clamped down on journal-ists. The case has been seen as a test of free speech as opponents say government attacks on per-sonal and political liberties are growing.

Prosecutors last year indicted Tatsuya Kato of Japan’s conserva-tive Sankei Shimbun newspaper over an article that listed rumors that Park was absent for seven hours during the disaster that killed more than 300 people, mostly teenagers. Prosecutors, who previ-ously requested an 18-month prison term, have one week to appeal the ruling.

In a press conference, Kato described the acquittal as a “due verdict” and said he hopes pros-ecutors will not appeal. He said his story on Park’s whereabouts during the ferry disaster serves the public interest.

South Korea’s Foreign Ministry said earlier Thursday that it had

asked the Justice Ministry to con-sider Japan’s request for leniency on Kato.

Despite the acquittal, South Korea’s criminal defamation law should be repealed because it “stifles a free press, has a chilling effect on freedom of expression and works against the public inter-est by gagging critics and whistle blowers,” Phil Robertson of Human Rights Watch said in a statement.

Park’s government came under massive public criticism for its botched rescue operation during the ferry disaster. South Korean media have also questioned whether Park was unaccounted for on the day of the sinking in April 2014.

The headline of Kato’s report, which cited financial industry ru-mors, parliamentary debates and the leading conservative South Korean newspaper Chosun Ilbo, said: “President Park Geun-hye was missing on the day the pas-senger ship sank. Who was she meeting?” The article repeated rumors in South Korean media and the financial industry “about a relationship between the president and a man” said to be married at the time. Park’s office has said she wasn’t with the man in question, a former adviser. (ap)

Jokowi noted that so far he had no personal problem with Novanto. He, however, affirmed that he had not communicated with Novanto.

Indonesia’s parliament speaker quit his post Wednesday over al-legations he tried to extort a stake from a US mining giant, in one of the country’s biggest political scandals in years.

Setya Novanto was recorded demanding shares in the Indone-sian unit of Freeport-McMoRan in exchange for extending the miner’s right to operate in the country, claiming the the stake would be divided between President Joko Widodo and the vice president.

The case sparked a political storm when the recording emerged several weeks ago, and has gripped Indonesia with a cast of colourful characters, including a spy-turned-company executive and a political-ly-connected businessman dubbed “the gasoline godfather”.

Novanto had tried to hang on to the powerful speaker post despite mounting pressure, but finally opted to step down late Wednesday as a parliamentary ethics council inves-tigating the case was wrapping up its probe.

“It is with sincerity that I tender my resignation, I hope this is in the interest of the nation, the state and the people of Indonesia,” said

his resignation letter, which was handed to the council.

The move came during the last stage of the council’s investigation, when most of its members had found him guilty of a “moderate ethics vio-lation”, and the body appeared poised to strip him of his job anyway.

The head of the council said that Novanto’s resignation meant the investigation had ended.

Despite quitting as speaker, he will remain a lawmaker.

Widodo and Vice President Jusuf Kalla have vehemently denied the claim that they ordered Novanto to demand the stake.

QuitKalla, who had called for No-

vanto to quit, welcomed his res-ignation.

“I think it’s good, although a little late -- he should have quit last week,” he told Kompas news-paper.

Even in one of the world’s most corrupt countries, Novanto’s blatant attempt to extort a major foreign firm has proved shocking and ana-lysts say it highlights the continued uncertainty for overseas investors trying to do business in Southeast Asia’s biggest economy.

The controversy erupted several weeks ago when the energy minister handed a recording of Novanto al-

legedly demanding 20 percent of shares in Freeport’s Indonesian unit to the ethics council.

The council heard evidence from several people, with key testimony provided by the head of Freeport’s Indonesian unit, Maroef Sjamsud-din.

Sjamsuddin -- the former deputy chief of Indonesia’s national spy agency -- described how he used his mobile phone to secretly record

Novanto demanding the shares in a June meeting.

Also at the meeting was Muham-mad Reza Chalid, a businessman involved in the fuel import industry, who was implicated in the attempt to extort Freeport.

He has disappeared in recent days and failed to answer a summons to testify to the ethics council.

Freeport, which operates one of the one of the world’s biggest gold

and copper mines in Indonesia, re-mains locked in negotiations about extending its contract in the coun-try, which expires in 2021.

Novanto has courted controversy before, and he received a warning from the ethics council after he appeared during a September visit to the US with presidential hope-ful Donald Trump, and said that Indonesians valued him “highly”. (ant/afp)

JAKARTA — Indonesia deported 50 Taiwanese and Chinese citizens on Wednesday who were members of a cross-border telephone and Internet fraud ring, officials said.

Immigration official Yurod Saleh said the 49 Taiwanese and one Chinese were repatriated to face charges in their homeland. They have already spent two months in Indonesian jails and have been fined $770 for violating their tourist visas.

He said 419 Taiwanese and Chinese citizens have been arrested since August in several major Indonesian cities for involvement in cross-border telephone and Internet fraud. About 280 have been sent home since October.

Jakarta police chief of detectives Lt. Col. Krishna Murti said the arrests followed a tip-off from Chinese police.

“They were committing the crimes from Indonesia to avoid being tracked down by their respective law enforcers,” Murti said.

No details about the nature of the fraud were given. Such scams generally involve suspects obtaining personal informa-tion or prompting victims to transfer funds into overseas bank accounts. (ap)

Stephen Curry added 25 points on 10-of-14 shooting and seven assists as Golden State returned home from its two-week trip that ended with its lone defeat, 108-95 on Saturday night at Milwaukee. That also ended a 28-game overall winning streak by the Warriors, second-longest in NBA history.

Draymond Green had 16 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists for his fourth triple-double this season. Mirza Teletovic scored 24 points off the bench to lead the Suns, whose poor showing sent the sellout crowd to the exits midway through the fourth.

San Antonio’s Kawhi Leonard scored 27 points as the Spurs set a club record with their 23rd straight home victory, rolling past the Wash-ington Wizards 114-95. LaMarcus Aldridge added 14 points and Manu Ginobili and Patty Mills each had 11 for San Antonio. The Spurs are 14-0 at home and 22-5 overall. John Wall and Marcin Gortat had 20

points each for the Wizards. In New York, Dwyane Wade

scored 10 of his 28 points in the fourth quarter, and Hassan White-side had 20 points and 13 rebounds to help the Miami Heat beat the Brooklyn Nets 104-98.

Goran Dragic added 16 points, Gerald Green had 13 and Justise Winslow 11 for Miami in the Heat’s third straight victory. Brook Lopez scored 25 points, and Jarrett Jack had 22 points and 10 assists for the Nets. They dropped the final three games of their six-game homestand.

The Los Angeles Clippers over-came center DeAndre Jordan’s ejection to down the Milwaukee Bucks 103-90 after Chris Paul had 21 points and eight assists.

Jordan had nine points and eight rebounds in 18 minutes. He left with 6:49 remaining in the third after getting a pair technical fouls from referee Marc Davis with the Clippers leading 66-52. The calls

stemmed from a battle over a loose ball with Bucks guard Michael Carter-Williams.

Carmelo Anthony had 20 points, 15 rebounds and nine assists for the Knicks and Arron Afflalo scored 29 points as New York beat the Min-nesota Timberwolves 107-102.

Mika Hakkinen admits it has been “painful” to watch his former team McLaren struggle for performance and reliability in Formula 1 during 2015. McLaren suffered 12 retirements and scored just 27 points as it finished ninth in the constructors’ championship ahead of only Manor after embarking on a new partnership with Honda.

Hakkinen, who won the 1998 and 1999 world titles with McLaren, conceded it is a difficult time for McLaren, but he is confident the team will learn from the experience.

“Of course it’s painful to watch them because everyone is talking about the failure,” said Hakkinen. “It’s physiologically demanding.

“If McLaren had a bad season this year, I don’t see that as the end of the world. “It’s a big team and there are some great people working there. “I’m sure with the right positive mentality and thinking, they will get over the problems and they will come back to being successful.

“This is not the end of McLaren. This is the start of McLaren. “It’s a new relationship they have with a new engine manufacturer. “This is a like a test to see how they can go over the problems together and face the challenges in the future.

“When you learn new things, you make mistakes and those mistakes make you wiser and you can be better.” Hakkinen thinks McLaren’s success in the past and its approach to racing will help it turnaround its fortunes.

“When I was racing there, they analysed every details very carefully and that is what makes them great,” he said. “I’m sure with the drivers they have and the experience the team has, they know how to get there.

“When I was there, it took years analysing yourself, working with your team, understanding where are the problems are and how we can win, how we can be better, where we can be better. “But when the victory arrived we were calm and collected, we had more confidence, we believed in ourselves more than ever.” (rtr)

She wasn’t able to leave with a victory in her final game with the U.S. national team. China’s 1-0 victory on Wednesday night — the U.S. team’s first home loss in more than a decade — wasn’t going to diminish the triumphant nature of Wambach’s extraordinary career.

“Tonight is a celebration,” Wambach asserted. “The result, obviously, is annoying. It would be better if we had won, but the reality is I played in so many games. This result doesn’t shape or determine or define my career.”

Wambach said her teammates apologized profusely to her after-ward, but she told them, “There’s nothing to be sorry about. Today wasn’t about getting a result.” Wambach played into the 72nd minute, managing two threatening headers and a shot on goal from inside the penalty area before subbing out of a match for the final time.

“It’s kind of symbolic; I get 70 minutes and we don’t score a goal,” Wambach said, alluding to why it’s time for her, at 35, to retire.

The career scoring leader in international play — for men and women, with 184 goals— kicked off her cleats and hugged each teammate on the field before walk-ing to the bench, smiling, to em-brace her coaches and remaining teammates as the crowd chanted her name.

“I love this team,” Wambach said in comments delivered on the field to fans after the game. “It has been my pleasure and my honor to represent you all, the fans, for as long as I’ve been able to. ... The

future is so bright. These women are going to kill it.”

And she made it clear that, despite the loss, it was time to celebrate, saying, “Bourbon Street, watch out,” before dropping the microphone and walking off alone as her teammates waited behind, applauding with the rest of the crowd.

China scored in the 58th min-ute, when forward Wang Shuang volleyed in a bounding cross from Wang Shanshan. The U.S., which won the women’s World Cup this summer, had gone 104 home games without losing since falling to Denmark in 2004.

Kristine Lilly and Mia Hamm started that 3-1 loss Denmark in Philadelphia, while Wambach came in as a sub. The U.S. women had gone 91-0-13 since.

The Americans nearly tied China in the 87th min-ute when Lindsey Horan beat goal-keeper Zhao Lina, but Horan was ruled just a step offside when she received the pass from Christen Press. That was the closest of several near misses.

Horan’s header forced a diving save by Lina in the 82nd min-ute. In the 84th min-ute, Carli L l o y d ’s pass sent

Press into the penalty area for a hard drive from the left side. But Press, who had subbed in for Wam-bach, shot it right at Lina. In added time, Emily Sonnett’s header went just over the cross bar.

The game wrapped up the U.S.’s nine-game “Victory Tour” in which it went 7-1-1, outscoring opponents 40-3.

Wambach got her 10th start of the year in her send-off game and also was designated the captain. It was apparent from the outset that the Americans’ plan of attack was based in part on sending high cross-es into the penalty area in hopes of connecting with Wambach for one of her trademark headers. She put two headers toward goal in the first 2 minutes, but both were blocked away by defenders.

“We really wanted to get her a goal. She did well, had a few

chances,” Lloyd said. “It’s un-fortunate to lose the match

but at the same time this is a celebration of Abby and what she’s done for the team and I think that’s what

matters.”(ap)

MADRID — Valencia beat third-tier club Barakaldo 2-0 for Gary Neville’s first win as a head coach on Wednesday, advancing to the round of 16 of the Copa del Rey 5-1 on aggre-gate. Santi Mina scored in the eighth minute and Alvaro Negrodo added in the 31st at the Mestalla Stadium to give Neville the victory in his third game in charge of the Spanish club.

“I’m happy with the result,” Neville said. “Tonight it was

important to win to build confidence. We hadn’t

won in the last couple of weeks. It was

important to do it tonight.”

Neville was confirmed as h e a d c o a c h

just before Va-lencia won the first

leg 3-1, but wasn’t on the bench during the game.

He watched from the stands when his team held Barcelona

to a 1-1 home draw in the Spanish league.

The former England and Man-

chester United defender debuted with a 2-0 loss to Lyon in the Champions League, a result that eliminated Valen-cia from the competition. His second game was a 1-1 draw at Eibar in the Spanish league over the weekend.

“I think the talent is there, the abil-ity is there,” Neville said. “I saw many individual things that I liked tonight. I think that as a coach you are always thinking about what needs to improve, and there were things that we could have done better tonight, but also things that we did well.”

In other games Wednesday, second-division club Mirandes upset Malaga 3-1 on aggregate after a 1-0 win in the second leg, while Eibar advanced 4-3 on aggregate after routing Ponfer-radina 4-0. The deciding goal was an 85th-minute penalty converted by Mikel Arruabarrena.

Rayo Vallecano eliminated Getafe on away goals despite a 3-1 loss, while Athletic Bilbao had six differ-ent scorers in a 6-0 rout of Linense to advance 8-0 on aggregate. Las Palmas drew 1-1 at Real Sociedad to reach the next round 3-2 on ag-gregate.(ap)

PARIS — Winger Angel Di Maria came off the bench to set up a late winner for striker Edinson Cavani as defending champion Paris Saint-Germain beat Saint-Etienne 1-0 to reach the League Cup quarterfinals on Wednesday.

Apart from hitting the cross-bar with a scissor-kick in the first half, PSG top scorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic had a quiet game and was replaced by Di Maria, who went close with a free-kick in the 77th minute.

With four minutes remaining, Di Maria delivered a brilliant dipping pass over the defense and Cavani volleyed expertly past Jessy Moulin despite being

slightly off balance.“Saint-Etienne only came to

defend, but I have to say they defended very, very well,” PSG coach Laurent Blanc said. “I told my players at halftime that they had to do better.”

But despite fielding a strong side, PSG struggled to break down a Saint-Etienne side featur-ing four teenagers and a reserve goalkeeper. PSG hosts Lyon next month.

Lyon needed a late goal from forward Claudio Beauvue in a 2-1 home win against second-division Tours, giving belea-guered coach Hubert Fournier a much-needed win.

In the last match at Stade

Gerland before Lyon moves to a new stadium next month, Beau-vue struck a penalty in the 38th, but midfielder Ibrahima Tandia levelled 20 minutes from time.

Beauvue grabbed the winner in the 85th from near the penalty spot to prompt relief on Lyon’s bench.

Also, former Newcastle wing-er Remy Cabella was on target as Marseille won 3-2 way to sec-ond-division Bourg-en-Bresse, while strikers Diego Roland and Henri Saivet scored as Bordeaux beat Monaco 3-0.

In the other quarters, it is: Tou-louse vs. Marseille; Bordeaux vs. Lorient, and Guingamp vs. Lille. (ap)

MILAN — Roma’s miserable month continued as it crashed out of the Italian Cup on Wednesday, losing 4-2 on penalties to second-division Spezia.

“On behalf of AS Roma and myself, I want to apologize to the fans for to-day’s game,” said Roma’s American President James Pallotta on the club’s twitter account. “Congratulations to Spezia.”

Holder Juventus is safely through to the quarterfinals after sweeping aside 10-man Torino 4-0 in a derby match. Napoli crushed Hellas Verona 3-0, while relegation-threatened Carpi pulled off an upset, with Antonio Di Gaudio scoring the only goal in a 1-0 victory at Fiorentina.

Both Carpi and Fiorentina hit the woodowrk in the first half, while they each had a player sent off in stoppages as Gonzalo Rodriguez and Jerry Mba-kogu were dismissed for an off the ball scuffle.

Miralem Pjanic and Edin Dzeko missed Roma’s first two spot kicks after the match had finished goalless after extra time. Spezia scored all four of theirs to book a quarterfinal tie against third-division giantkiller Alessandria, which has knocked out Palermo and Genoa.

Roma, which is through to the knockout stages of the Champions League, has not won in any competi-tion since beating Lazio in the capital derby on Nov. 8, leaving coach Rudi Garcia under pressure.

The team was resoundly jeered at

the end of each period, while there were several chants against Garcia.

“Tonight we were expected to win and we didn’t, it’s a failure,” Garcia said. “We have to weather the storm, recapture the wolf-like spirit, but I will never give up and I will push the team until the death, if that’s what’s needed.

“Now the only thing we need to do is not give up and get back to winning ways from Sunday against Genoa. We need character and pride. We are all angry at tonight’s performance. You can’t go out of the Italian Cup against a Serie B side. We need a different at-titude on the pitch.”

In Turin, Simone Zaza had given Juventus a first-half lead before Cris-tian Molinaro was sent off for a second yellow card, four minutes after the break.

Zaza doubled Juve’s lead two minutes later and goals from Paulo Dybala and Paul Pogba sealed the win. Juventus will face either last year’s runner-up Lazio or Udinese in the quarterfinals.

Omar El Kaddouri and Dries Mertens got Napoli off to the perfect start, giving the hosts a 2-0 lead inside 12 minutes. Verona hit the crossbar before substitute Jose Callejon added a third minutes after coming off the bench.

Napoli meets league leader Inter Milan in the final eight, while Carpi will face either Sampdoria or AC Milan in its first ever Italian Cup quar-terfinal. (ap)

ZURICH - Suspended FIFA President Sepp Blatter appeared before the ethics committee of world soccer’s governing body on Thursday in a case that could end with him banned from the sport for years.

FIFA is reeling from the worst corruption scandal in its more than 100-year history, with 41 people including national soccer bosses as well as entities charged by U.S. prosecutors and Blatter under criminal investigation in Switzerland.

Blatter, who is due to leave the post on Feb. 26 when his successor will be elected, arrived at FIFA headquarters in Zurich in

a chauffeur-driven vehicle with one of his lawyers.

Blatter was suspended on Oct. 8 from all soccer-related activity for 90 days alongside European (UEFA) soccer chief Michel Pla-tini pending a full investigation into their conduct.

The FIFA ethics inquiry began in the wake of the Swiss attorney general office’s decision to open criminal proceedings against Blat-ter over a $2 million payment to Platini in 2011. Blatter and Platini have both denied wrongdoing.

Platini, who had intended to run for the FIFA presidency, was due to be heard by the committee on Friday but has refused to at-

tend, saying the process against him is purely political.

Earlier this week, Blatter wrote to FIFA’s 209 member state associations, on his own stationary, proclaiming his in-nocence.

He reiterated that the payment made when Blatter was running for re-election of UEFA, was legitimate and resulted from a verbal contract for work Platini had done for FIFA years before.

Separately, a spokesman for the Swiss Justice Ministry said on Thursday it had frozen mil-lions of Swiss francs related to FIFA in response to a request from U.S. investigators. (rtr)

(ap)

(ap)

“Russia’s (Syria) plan, in principle, broadly coincides with the view put forward by the United States. That is joint work on a constitution, creation of oversight mechanisms for a future democratic election, the election itself, and recognition of its results.”

“I’m not sure if we need (a perma-nent) base there. This is quite signifi-cant infrastructure, it needs money to

be invested.”“We believe that only the Syrian

people can decide who should gov-ern them ... We support the initiative of the United States about the U.N. resolution.”

UKRAINE“We never said there were not

people there who were carrying out certain tasks, including in the military sphere. But that does not mean there are Russian (regular) troops there, feel the difference.”

“We are not interested in a worsen-ing of the conflict. We are interested in the conflict ending as soon as possible, but not by people being annihilated in eastern Ukraine.”

“We do not plan to introduce any sanctions against Ukraine ...

(but) Ukraine will not enjoy any benefits and preferences in trade with Russia.”

TURKEY“We see the action of the Turkish

authorities towards our plane ... as a hostile act.” “It is hard for us to reach agreement with the current Turkish leadership, if at all possible.”

“What have they achieved? May-be, they thought that we would run away from there (Syria)? But Russia is not such a country.”

CBANK POLICY, RATE“I support the central bank and the

government’s policy aimed at provid-ing macroeconomic stability.”

“Much as one would like to cut the rate, it shouldn’t be done forcefully. It

should be based on the reality of our economy, its structure”

GOVERNMENT CHANGES“I am very considerate towards

people, as is seen from my long stint in the job, and I think that personnel reshuffles, as a rule, are disruptive.” “There are no significant changes (reshuffles) in the pipeline.”

GDP FORECAST, BUDGET“The government, taking into ac-

count the valuation of our exports, expects the economy to grow by 0.7 percent in 2016, by 1.9 percent in 2017, and by 2.4 percent in 2018.

(kmb25)

The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine.

Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

(par)

“This is a provisional target. We have not made detailed cal-culations because we still have to coordinate with the Udayana University. Ideally, it should be 4.5 million but we cannot set a target recklessly,” Head of the Bali Tourism Office Anak Agung

Gede Yuniartha Putra said on the sidelines of a function marking the inauguration of the executive board members of the Bali chap-ter of the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) on Wednesday.

The provisional target would

be only 200 thousand more tour-ists, compared to the target set for tourist arrivals in 2015 at 4 million, he said.

“To achieve the target of tourist arrivals next year, we will receive promotion assistance from the central government. In addition, we have also prepared a calendar of ac-tivities to be organized throughout 2016,” he said.

With the calendar of activities,

tourists would be assured of cultural and tourism activities taking place in Bali, he said.

The tourism office has also set the target of domestic tourists visit-ing the resort island for 2016 at 7.8 million, he said.

The Chairman of PHRI of Bali Chapter, Tjokorda Oka Artha Ar-dhana Sukawati, urged that for increasing the number of tourist arrivals, the quality of tourist

destinations in Bali needs to be improved. (ant)

(ap)
