Denpasar (Bali Post)—To support the smoothness of

Bali tourism is absolutely a must.Because, no matter what happenedin Bali, it will get in touch with tour-ism as a distinctive feature. Ad-vanced tourism will automaticallyincrease the prosperity of Balinesecommunity.

The matter was revealed by Di-rector General of Sea Transporta-tion, Sunaryo, Thursday (Jan 13)night, on the farewell and welcomeceremony of the Head of DistrictNavigation of Benoa Harbor, fromNyoman Sukayadnya to Supardi.Sukayadnya subsequently served asthe Head of District Navigation ofthe Tanjung Priok Harbor.

Sunaryo expressly stated thattourism could not only be deter-mined by the management alone.Participation of local government, central government, and police of-ficers at the harbor should work to-gether to support the smoothness ofBali tourism. Particularly the marinetourism, aside from tourism, it alsohad something to do with the op-eration of the ship. “Who says navi-gation is not associated with tour-ism. Therefore, the role of naviga-tion is critical to the existence of Balitourism,” said Sunaryo.

Therefore, he continued that ma-rine transportation had a major rolein supporting the smoothness oftourism implementation. However,Sunaryo admitted that so far therewas a communication gap betweenthe marine tourism managementwith the navigation system. Such acondition caused the operator ofmarine tourism services often not toobey the prevailing regulations.

The communication gap, saidSunaryo, should be addressed as

Medewi, there was a motorcycle fall-ing down in front of him and he triedto avoid it. The bus then plunged intoa sufficiently deep rice field from theroad. Position of the bus was upside-down until the tires were right at thetop.

As a result, the front windshieldand bumper of the buses shattered.Meanwhile, dozens of passengersonce shouted hysterically and suf-fered from injuries due to the inci-

dent. Even, according to witnesses atthe scene, there was a passenger fromKaliakah Negara whose teeth fall outand had gone home. Up to Saturdayafternoon, police officers and localresidents were trying to pull the bus.

On the other hand, Chief Unit ofTraffic Accident of Jembrana Police,Dewa Putu Werdiana, when asked forhis confirmation last Saturdayclaimed to have received the reportabout the accident. (kmb26)

Bali Cultural Services to digitize thousandsof ancient palm-leaf manuscripts

stitution from the United States. On thataccount, this activity will not utilize thefunds of the regional budget plan,” hesaid while adding that the digitalizationteam of the ancient manuscripts fromthe United States would be accompa-nied by the Bali’s ancient manuscriptexperts that currently employed in theBali Cultural Services.

This official from Rijasa Village,Tabanan, asserted that digitalization tothousands of those ancient manuscriptsalso posed one of the efforts of BaliCultural Services to introduce the liter-ary works of Balinese community tothe international world. Later on, thedigitalization process of the palm-leafmanuscripts would be accompanied bytranslation of the manuscripts into threelanguages, namely Balinese, BahasaIndonesia and English. The results ofthe manuscript digitalization and itstranslation would be published in thewebsite that could be accessed quicklyand easily by the whole internationalcommunity. “Through this medium, wedo hope that all knowledge stored in

the ancient manuscripts can be publi-cized widely and used as good as pos-sible. Digitalization process also aimsto secure the Balinese literary worksbecause the manuscripts written on thepalm-leaf are not durable and can de-cay in keeping with the time passes by,”he stated firmly.

Suastika admitted not to know forsure how many ancient manuscriptswere stored in museums in Bali as wellas those collected by individuals. Tobe sure, it amounted to thousands andeven tens of thousands. After the firstphase of digitalization process couldbe accomplished, his party also had thedesire to digitize the ancient manu-scripts stored in the Bali Museum aswell as other government-owned mu-seums scattered throughout Bali.

“Indeed, we have such a plan. However, for the time being, we justconcentrate on doing the digitaliza-tion to the ancient palm-leaf manu-scripts of the library collectionowned by the Bali Cultural Ser-vices,” he said. (kmb13)

Marine tourism operatorsfrequently ignore regulations

soon as possible. First of all, itshould be resolved internally, andthen continued to external level.Communication should be activelyencouraged to continue, so that suchcommunication gap could be re-solved accordingly.

Afterward, he gave an exampleof communication gap. Frequently, the agents of marine tourism ser-vices made a sudden report to theharbor administration regarding totheir activities. In reality, the sched-ule had been arranged a long timebefore, so the agents had enoughopportunity to report the activityplan earlier. “As it was reportedsuddenly, perhaps the officers ofharbor administration were unableto complete the report on his deskon time. Consequently, its own neg-ligence caused someone else to getthe impact. To sum up, the voyageschedule was cancelled,” saidSunaryo.

Related to the issues, Sunaryoreally expected the operators ofmarine tourist services to continu-ously develop their professional at-titude. They might not delay anyjobs if they could be accomplishedimmediately. “A lot of marine tour-ism operators made their report fiveminutes prior to departure. They hadvarious reasons. Some said it wasdue to traffic congestion and diffi-culty in arranging the schedule,” headded.

Sunaryo ensured that communica-tion gap would create a significantdecline in Bali tourism. He analogizedthe role played by the operators ofmaritime tourism services to a bridge. If the bridge was damaged, the hopeto make the Bali tourism a famoustourist destination throughout Indone-sia would come to an end. The nation must wait 60 days tosee whether the party that maintainedthe ex-leader in power gets an upperhand in the new government, lock-ing the old system back in place.

The 74-year-old Ben Ali fled hiscountry Friday for Saudi Arabia, lit-erally chased out by angry legionsof citizens protesting joblessness, corruption and lack of freedoms —a first for an Arab country. Numer-ous citizens laid a large measure ofblame for his fate on his in-laws,supremely wealthy and consideredjust as corrupt.

The interim president, FouadMebazaa, the former president of thelower house of parliament, wasnamed Saturday — the secondchange of power in fewer than 24hours. He quickly ordered the cre-ation of a unity government that byits nature would include the opposi-tion which had been frozen out un-der Ben Ali.

“When we won the order, ourcompany bosses were very happyand excited,” said Gary Qiu, amarketing manager for theGuangxi Sanhuan Group. “Theypaid great attention to it. The en-tire production process includingits preparation was worked on avery tight schedule. Also, we usedone of the most advanced kilns inChina to make these products.”

Established in 1987, GuangxiSanhuan is a modern Chinese suc-cess story — a once state-ownedcompany that has now gone pri-vate, tailoring a reputation of be-ing a quality manufacturer for ce-ramics and porcelain over the lastdecade.

It employs more than 8,000 andis known for producing high-endtable and dining ware for exportto Europe, the United States andSoutheast Asia. has already been completed and iscurrently undergoing finishingtouches, he added.

The new port was actually a na-tional project, said Made Santha, asthe largest portion of the fundinghad come from the centralgovernment’s budget of 92.2 bil-lion rupiahs, with an additionalbudget provided by the TransportMinistry and Public Works Minis-try.

The bulk of the funding has al-ready been spent on feasibilitystudy works, the physical construc-

tion of the main pier of 154 longand 12 meters wide and the con-struction of an access road to theport.

In an effort to expedite thecompletion of the new tourism fa-cility, Bali provincial governmenthas allocated a total fund of 18.7billion rupiahs to cover up the costof additional expenditure on landappropriation and construction ofelectricity and clean water net-works.

Made Santha said Bali expectsto receive a tourist spillover fromSingapore which is visited by atleast 300 cruise ships annually.

Hotel occupancy rate in Bali 59%ber was also decreasing. Therewas 13% decrease compare to Oc-tober 2010. Six out of nine regen-cies in Bali have star hotels andthe highest hotel occupancy ratewas in Badung which was 67% fol-lowed by Denpasar 55% andKarangasem also 55%.

The occupancy rate in Gianyarwas 52% and in Tabanan 47%, whilethe lowest was in Buleleng whichwas only 28%. Other regencieswhich are Jembrana, Klungkung, andBangli, don’t have star hotels yet.

Suarsa said that the highest ho-tel occupancy rate was in fourstar hotel, followed by one star, three star, two star, and lastly fivestar hotel. The length of stay ofthe tourists was also decreasing.

The average stay of foreigntourists was 2.88 days, decreased0.71% compared to the perviousmonth which was 3.59 days.

The length of stay of foreigntourists was longer compare tothe domestic one which was 2.8days, Suarsa explained

“This management is necessary inresponse to the inter-regional com-petition in attracting tourists gettingbitterer. Currently, tourists have moreand more choices of tourist attrac-tion. Of course, they will visit the des-tination offering the best services,”he said.

According to him, in the past thetourist destination of Kintamani,Bangli, was very renowned in cul-tural tourism. Unfortunately, the tour-ist visits to the destinations today in-creasingly dropped and vanquishedby the traffic of visits to Tanah Lot.Of course, it was on account of theless well-ordered management. “Onthat account, government need toreform the management of thosetourist attractions in order the num-ber of tourist visit could increasefrom year to year,” he said.

Meanwhile, a tourism practitio-ner, Ngurah Wijaya, also brieflystated that uneven distribution on thedevelopment of supporting tourisminfrastructure was highlighted bytourism perpetrators. In reality, theinfrastructure, especially road access, was the key to the equalizationgrowth of Bali tourism.

In his opinion, many domesticand foreign tourists preferred to stayin the southern regions of Bali suchas Nusa Dua, Kuta and Denpasar. Itwas caused by the easy and shorterroad access connecting to the tour-ist resorts had not existed inBuleleng.

“On that account, the Bali Provin-cial Government should immediatelyfind a solution for the constructionof road access to the North and WestBali tourist resorts without time-con-suming for hours,” he said. (par)

tourism development could also beseen in the increasing number of for-est areas being turned into s touristspots. Apart from disturbing the eco-system, he said, this had the poten-tial of triggering natural disasterssuch as floods and landslides.

Ketut blamed the local govern-ment for allowing rapid tourism de-velopment in Bali during the lastthree decades which according tohim had caused the province’s en-vironment to deteriorate.

He said the development had dis-turbed the existence of holy placesand beaches in Bali which weremeant for sacred ceremonies andplaces to purify Balinese duringHindu holy days.

MAINZ – GermanChancellor Angela Merkel saidon Saturday any measure tostabilize the euro should comewithin a complete strategicpackage, dampening hopes fora quick decision on moves totackle the euro zone debt cri-sis.

Germany faces mount-ing pressure from the Euro-pean Commission and its eurozone partners to strengthen arescue fund for troubled mem-ber states, the European Finan-cial Stability Facility (EFSF).

“If the discussion isabout a further package ofmeasures, it is above all impor-tant that we develop a com-plete strategy that must abso-lutely include closer economiccoordination,” Merkel told anews conference in Mainz af-ter a meeting with other seniormembers of her ruling Chris-tian Democrats.

“You cannot simplyraise another particular aspecteach day,” she added.

Berlin insists it sees noneed to commit more funds tothe 440 billion euro ($591.7billion) EFSF, which has so farbeen tapped only by Ireland.Instead, the German govern-ment is open to a discussionabout way to enable the exist-ing fund to be used in full.

Senior Europeansources told Reuters, however, that the sense of urgency inBerlin for boosting the fundhad diminished after success-ful bond auctions this week inSpain and Portugal, the twocountries seen most at risk ofa bailout following rescues ofGreece and Ireland last year.

Instead Germany ispushing for broader anti-crisismeasures to be agreed at asummit of European Unionleaders in March.

Only around 250 billioneuros of the 440 billion eurofund are effectively available

Bankers were buzzing on Fridayabout how soon that might happen, with at least one saying he wouldnot be surprised if the governmentpicked the deal’s managers nextweek and others saying the fee onthe deal was already under pressure.

AIG Chief Executive BobBenmosche, in an interview, said thecompany was hoping to pick thedeal’s managers as soon as waspractical, although he gave notimeframe. Benmosche was inWashington for lunch with TreasurySecretary Timothy Geithner.

A person familiar with the situa-tion, who spoke on condition of ano-nymity, said the government and thecompany would talk this weekendabout how many and which banksto pick as coordinators, with an an-nouncement likely early next week.

The person said if all goes wellwith the sales process — particu-larly if AIG can meet a challenge tosell itself and its new structure to in-vestors — then a share offering ofat least $15 billion was entirely pos-sible in the near future.

But even before Benmosche andAIG go out on a roadshow to telltheir new post-restructuring story, the company’s largest shareholderafter the government said he had nodoubt about sticking with his invest-ment.

However, he added, “ifprofits cannot be generated” de-spite efforts towards efficient,good-quality manufacturing andtraining, “we have no choice butto consider relocation of produc-tion sites as a real possibility.”

NEW YORK – The recapitalization of bailed-out insurer American International GroupInc closed on Friday, leaving the government with a 92 percent stake that it plans to sell quickly.

ing that it’s a huge opportunity forFairholme and its investors.”

The recapitalization was in-tended to simplify AIG’s $182 bil-lion bailout by paying off the Fed-eral Reserve and leaving the U.S.Treasury as AIG’s majority owner. The Treasury said on Friday its cashinvestment in AIG is now $68 bil-lion.

“Treasury remains optimisticthat taxpayers will get back everydollar of their investment in AIG,”Geithner said in a statement. Thegovernment stands to make a profitin the tens of billions of dollars onits AIG shares, given their appre-ciation over the last year.

A person familiar with the situa-tion told Reuters on Monday a largeTreasury-AIG share sale was likelyafter mid-May, and other sourceshave said in the past that Treasurylikely would dispose of the stake by2012.

The Treasury spent all dayThursday meeting bankers in NewYork to find the right group to man-age the stock sales. The CEOs ofsome of the world’s largest finan-cial institutions appeared in personto make their case for what couldbe one of the 10 largest share of-fers ever.

Sources have said the banks’ pro-posals would includes fees of no morethan 75 basis points — some $150million for the winning banks on a$20 billion deal, but half the typicalfee for a deal of this type and size.

Some bankers said on Friday theywould not be surprised, given the

competitive nature of the deal, if thefees went even lower — although onebanker pointedly noted he had no in-terest in doing the deal for free.

The fee structure would be broadlyin line with what the government paidbanks last year to manage the initialpublic offering of automaker GeneralMotors Co. Multiple people familiarwith the situation said it did not makesense for the AIG fees to be higherthan for GM.

“It’s like buying a missile at $1billion when the last time you paidhalf a billion,” one person said.

There is a broad assumptionamong bankers involved in the pro-cess that those who committed to$4.3 billion in bank credit lines forAIG in December have the bestchance of winning a lead role in theshare sale.

JPMorgan Chase & Co, Bank ofAmerica Corp and Citigroup Incwere joint lead arrangers.

Having a lead role gives a bank alarger chunk of the fee pool, morecontrol over the sale process and theprestige of having managed a mar-quee deal for the U.S. government.

The government saved AIG fromcollapse in September 2008. Over thelast year, the company has raised tensof billions of dollars through assetsales and IPOs of international unitsas it slimmed down and shifted fo-cus.

AIG shares fell 5.6 percent to closeat $54. The stock price has fallen inrecent days and is expected to settlein the mid-$40s level by next weekas stock warrants start trading.

Toyota may shift to foreign production The company plans to re-

lease a fresh medium-term busi-ness plan in April, he added.

Japanese exporters, led byautomakers and electronics pro-ducers, have come under pressurefrom the rising yen in recentmonths.

A strong yen makes Japa-nese exports relatively more ex-pensive in foreign markets, whileshrinking the value of Japanesefirms’ overseas earnings when re-patriated.

Meanwhile, Japaneseautomakers have been shiftingmore of their production and salesoverseas — particularly to grow-ing Asian markets — as youngerJapanese motorists avoid car pur-

chases due to the high costs offuel, maintenance and tax.

Toyota Motor had alreadyannounced in late 2010 a plan toreduce domestic production whileboosting output in foreign coun-tries in 2011.

“Unfortunately, we have tobrace ourselves for more diffi-culty and uncertainty to come, like last year,” Toyoda said in hismessage, adding that the businessplan would outline a corporatevision for the decade to 2020.

“In April we hope to beable to show you the vision, in-cluding the directions and targetsfor a medium-term business struc-ture reform plan to achieve thevision’s goals,” Toyoda said.

“Given the mechanics ofthe rescue fund, this sum can-not be fully utilized in the formof credit, because a certainamount of capital reserves needto be built up to maintain theAAA rating that is necessaryfor favorable financing,” Ger-man Finance MinisterWolfgang Schaeuble was citedas saying in the FrankfurterAllgemeine Sonntagszeitung.

“We have to and willsolve this problem,” he said.

This sentiment was ech-oed in an international Euro-pean Commission paper, ac-cording to another media reporton Saturday.

“The finances availablewithin the EFSF must be raisedto at least 440 billion euros,”the paper read, as cited by DerSpiegel. “Member states areready to reconsider the size ofthe EFSF, whenever this is nec-essary.”

Schaeuble said he didnot expect Portugal, Spain,Italy and Belgium to need todraw upon the rescue fund.

“No one is rushing toask for aid from the fund, be-cause this also means strictconditions for national budget-ary and financial policy,” hesaid.

Schaeuble said he ex-pected budgetary policy andtaxes to remain “for a longtime, a matter for memberstates” rather than a commonEuropean economic policy.

Der Spiegel reported, however, that the EuropeanCommission expected the eurozone crisis to worsen in thefirst few months of this year.

“New and heightenedtensions seem to be unavoid-able in the early months of2011,” it cited the EC paper assaying.

Gondry said he has always likedpopular movies like “Back To TheFuture,” “Groundhog Day,”“Ghostbusters” and “48 Hours,” alllight-hearted character driven films.

But he says you can forget thebrooding hero types. “I’m not crazyabout the superhero movies when thecharacters are too serious or pre-sumptuous,” he said. As he tells it, Rouas — aone-time French tennis instructor toHollywood stars — was manninghis company’s stall at a trade fair inLas Vegas when two young auto-graph hunters asked to borrow hispen.

The Jackson family was nearby, they said, so Rouas immediatelygave him not only his pen, but alsotwo samples of Versailles, one of hisfirm’s own brands, with instructionsfor them to be given to Janet Jack-son.

One hour later came an invita-tion for Rouas to meet the Jackson

family in a private salon, the per-fumer said. There, the Jacksons ex-pressed interest in his products;Rouas in turn proposed various fra-grances.

Following further negotiations, the musical clan settled on a fruityfloral blend for women and a moremusky version for men, said JosephRubino, 63, the master perfumerwhose nose perfected both scents.Developing the scent — which pur-ports to capture the prevailing floralaroma at Neverland — took just twoweeks. “We did it very very quickly,”said Rouas. “Usually it takes a year.”

WASHINGTON – Back at thedawn of the dinosaur era, a quick-moving predator set the stage for thefamous and fearsome giants that fol-lowed in its footsteps, according tonew research. “It was a little dino-saur, but it carried a big evolutionarystick,” said Paul C. Sereno of theUniversity of Chicago, a leader of theteam that discovered Eodromaeus.

The 4-foot-long hunter lived 230million years ago in what is nowSouth America and appears to be theancestor of such creatures as Tyran-nosaurus rex. “It is stunning,” Serenosaid of the find, reported in Friday’sedition of the journal Science.

Its features, such as a balancingtail and air pockets in the skull, show it was closely related to T. rex,he said. But while it stood on twofeet like T. rex, Eodromaeus (pro-nounced eyo-DRO-may-us) was alightweight at just 10- to 15-pounds.

German asthma warning for swimming babiesthan two years old in families withhigh instances of allergies are advisedby the UBA to refrain from babyswimming as a precautionary measureuntil it is clear whether the suspicionis confirmed.”

UBA President Jochen Flasbarthalso called on swimmers to better ad-here to basic hygiene rules and forswimming pool owners to do all theycan to minimise the risk, for exampleby using the latest water-treatmenttechnology.

“Swimming is healthy for childrenand adults. In order for it to remainso, everybody should shower thor-oughly before swimming in order toprevent dangers to health arising fromtrichloramine,” Flasbarth said. A Eu-ropean study published in 2006 byscientists in Belgium found the inci-

dence of asthma and wheezingamong 13- and 14-year-olds canrise significantly if they use an in-door swimming pool.

Research carried out in Britishpools in 2003 found high levels oftrichloramine-triggered proteins inthe blood of young swimmers andeven among parents who had satby the poolside and not swum.Asthma has been identified as aworsening health problem aroundthe world, but the suspected causesfor it are various.

The finger of suspicion ispointed variously at obesity, ge-netic predisposition, smoking, lowbirthweight, air pollution, house-hold dust mites and other allergens.Strong emotions and the weathercan exacerbate the condition.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – As the ocean floor plunges off southwest-ern Puerto Rico, it reveals coral reefs dotted with bright-blue sea squirtsand a multitude of other organisms whose existence has given hope toscientists who strive to save the island’s threatened ecosystems.

on Thursday.Divers enrolled in a one-year

training course to depths of up to100 feet (31 meters) noticed thethriving reefs and large predatorslurking nearby, said Appeldoorn, who oversees the university’s fish-eries, biology and coral reef stud-ies program.

The deep underwater landscapethey encountered was populated bylettuce coral, the lace-like star coraland several species of sponges, aswell as groupers, snappers and reefsharks, said Appledoorn, who iscalling for the protection of thereefs and nearby shallower areaswhere fish spawn and later retreatto deeper waters.

“Any large fish is always neat tosee, not having seen them on top ofthe (ocean) platform for decades, ornot at all,” he said.

The reef’s existence means thatstruggling, shallow ecosystems in theU.S. Caribbean territory may have abetter-than-believed chance at sur-vival, because fish species thriving ata deeper level can help replenishstocks in more shallow reefs, saidAppeldoorn and Ernesto Diaz, direc-tor of Puerto Rico’s Coastal ZoneManagement Program. “It’s a pleas-ant surprise to know that species youthought you wouldn’t see again ex-ist,” Diaz said.

The discovery — first announcedby NOAA last week — comes as of-ficials in Puerto Rico and the U.S.Virgin Islands seek to create the Car-ibbean Regional Ocean Partnership,an endeavor that aims to better coor-dinate the use of coastal waters andthe implementation of conservationprograms.

of geology and geophysics at YaleUniversity agreed: “It’s very signifi-cant, because it helps give us a bet-ter idea of what the ancestor of car-nivorous dinosaurs — includingTyrannosaurus, Allosaurus and thebirds — would have looked like.”

“A new species of early dino-saur is always an exciting find, es-pecially when the specimens are socomplete, like Eodromaeus,”added Randall B. Irmis, a profes-sor of geology and geophysics atthe University of Utah. It sharesmany features with an early car-nivorous dinosaur named Tawafrom New Mexico and reported lastyear by Irmis and colleagues.

The similarity supports the ideathat these early carnivorous dino-saurs moved between North andSouth America during the Late Tri-assic period, said Irmis, who wasnot part of Sereno’s research team.

In addition to the discovery ofEodromaeus — which means dawnrunner — the researchers proposedreclassifying a previously knowndinosaur called Eoraptor.

It was similar in size toEodromaeus, but differences in theteeth indicate Eoraptor more likelywas an ancestor of the giant plant-eating sauropod dinosaurs than thehunting theropods like T. rex withwhich it had been associated, ac-cording to Sereno, Paul N.Martinez of the National Univer-sity of San Juan in Argentina, andtheir co-authors.

Mancini said of Tevez, who stunnedthe club last month by demanding atransfer before withdrawing his re-quest. “I thought it was a difficultgame and I told the guys before thegame that.

“But I thought we were so-so inthe first 20 minutes and Wolvespressed us well and we had someproblems but we scored goals andhad three of four other chances toscore. “However, I thought we lostour concentration towards the endbecause we thought it was finishedbut it is never finished.”

Mancini handed new 27 millionpound signing Edin Dzeko his debutfollowing his transfer from Wolfsburgand although he clearly lacked matchsharpness, Mancini was still pleasedwith the Bosnian’s first afternoon outin City colours. “He played well,” headded. “It was his first game in 30days and his first game with a newteam but he played well.

“He needs to improve and workhard but I think he showed he is agood player. “We are happy after theresult and I am happy for our sup-porters because they deserve this butthe season is very long and we mustimprove because we cannot do thesame mistakes as today in the last 10minutes.”

On a different day, Wolves could

well have earned a point if not morein a spirited and hard-working per-formance. However, it was not to beon Saturday and they slipped backinto the relegation zone as a result ofthis loss.

“Forget the disappointment, weshould have been more goals up inthe first half and I?m sat here disap-pointed that we lost,” McCarthy said.“It’s not about what they have got - Ihave a good group of lads and a goodteam. “When we were on top weshould have punished them more.”

However, McCarthy was generousenough to outine that Tevez had madethe difference in the encounter cour-tesy of his two goals and in particu-lar his first, a wonderful dribblingeffort that was fit to win any game.“It was a brilliant goal from CarlosTevez,” he added.

“People will criticise defendersbut sometimes you have to say it wasa great goal. “A lot of teams wouldhave laid down and had their arseslapped at 4-1 down but we didn?tand that showed the character andspirit we have.

“I don’t think we are far away fromwhere we were last season in termsof points and games played. “We havejust had a good run and we are play-ing well and if we get a few moreplayers back we will be ok.”

With James out of the lineup, thefans let Wade have it during pre-game introductions and continuedthe loud boos every time he touchedthe ball early in the game. James, meanwhile, sat on the end of theHeat bench watching intently andapplauding his team’s effort with-out him.

Second place on today’s final 181-kilometre blast back to Buenos Airesgave Al-Attiyah a final winning margin of nearly 50 minutes over de Villiers, who was in turn half an hour clear of Sainz.

X-Raid BMW driver Stephane Peterhansel had been in thick of a three-way battle with Sainz and Al-Attiyah during the first week of the event, before a series of punctures saw him lose touch with the lead fight, andeventually fall right back to finish in fourth place.

His team-mate Krzysztof Holowczyc completed the final top five, aheadof VW’s fourth works driver Mark Miller, as the leading drivers cruised tothe finish without incident.

Meanwhile Carlos Sainz has denied that he was disappointed to onlyfinish third in the 2011 Dakar Rally after leading the first seven stages ofthe event.

The 2010 winner said he knew that he could not take anything for grantedas he held Volkswagen team-mate Nasser Al-Attiyah and X-Raid BMW’sStephane Peterhansel at bay during the opening week, so could not be toofrustrated when he encountered problems in the rally’s second half.

“Before racing a Dakar, you know it will be tough,” said Sainz. “AllDakar raids are tough. It’s like that. No, I am not disappointed. This is howthe race goes.

“After two tough weeks, there is nothing left to say. I gave it my verybest shot.” Sainz’s rally began to go awry when he twice became stuck insand dunes near the end of last Monday’s Antofagasta to Copiapo stage, costing him the lead.

As he tried to recover, further time was lost in dunes, with navigationerrors, punctures, gearbox damage and finally broken suspension. Thatleft Sainz over an hour behind the victorious Al-Attiyah in third place, despite the former World Rally champion having won seven of the rally’s13 stages.

Rossi buoyed by Wrooom fitnesshad first been thought. With his re-covery still in progress, Rossi wasconcerned that he would be belowpar for both pre-season testing -which commences at Sepang at thestart of February - and the openingrounds of the championship.

But having coped with the activi-ties of Ducati and Ferrari’s jointmedia event, Rossi is feeling moreupbeat about his shoulder’s condi-tion. “Skiing helped me,” he told

Gazzetta dello Sport. “I felt the needfor it after spending the winter with-out doing anything.”

Rossi said he had planned to onlybriefly participate in the kart andFiat 500 races on a frozen lake thatconcluded Wrooom on Friday, butinstead he contested both in full, andfinished second behind FernandoAlonso in the Fiat 500 contest.

“At one point the vertebrae toldme ‘you can’t do that’. I’ll just dotwo race laps and that’s it,” saidRossi. “In the car it was easier com-pared to the kart. The shoulder hurta bit just on the bumps. I feel pain ifI try to raise my arm, not when Idrive or ride the snowboard.”

The Italian now wants to makethe most of the next fortnight toimprove his fitness for the three-daySepang test. “In the next two weeksI will work full-time to try to be ingood form at Sepang,” Rossi said.“Strength isn’t much of a problem:what needs to improve is the armmovement, especially when I needto raise it and when I need to crouchon the bike.

“I count on what the doctors havesaid, that the more time goes by, thequicker is the recovery. We are onschedule, in fact a bit ahead thanpredicted. Let’s hope it’s enough.”
