The co-chairman of the studio and chief of its film division is under fire for rac-ist remarks about President Obama’s presumed choice in movies that surfaced in emails made public by the Sony cy-berattack.

Pascal also faces criticism for green-lighting the film that may have inspired the hacking to begin with: “The Interview,” which stars Seth Rogen and James Franco as bumbling journalists tasked with kill-ing North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

North Korea has denied responsibility for the attack, but praised it as a “righteous deed.” Earlier this year, the country’s foreign ministry said the film’s release would be an “act of war” and promised “merciless” retaliation.

“The Interview” is not the first film to target political leaders, or even North Korea. “Team America: World Police” famously took aim at Kim’s father, Kim Jong Il. This also isn’t the first time a powerful executive has been dogged by pr ivate comments made public. But can Pascal’s career sur-vive such a double whammy?

The 56-year-old thinks so.

“ I ’ d b e s u r -prised if my en-tire legacy was

based on the leak of the email exchange,” Pascal told industry website The Wrap on Thursday. Virtually unknown outside of Hollywood, her nearly 20-year tenure at Sony and Columbia Pictures has included some very well-known films, such as “Skyfall,” ‘’Superbad,” ‘’Salt,” ‘’Fury” and “The Equaliz-er.” Pascal was fourth on The Hollywood Reporter’s annual ranking released this week of the most powerful women in entertainment.

She apologized Thursday for the “insensitive and inap-propriate” comments in her emails that she says are “not an accurate reflec- t i on of who I a m . ” O s -c a r -

winning producer Scott Rudin, who participated in the racist exchange, apologized as well. Rudin, incidentally, was a pro-ducer of “Team America.”

The massive Sony hack not only revealed private emails sent by top executives, it also made thousands of employ-ee Social Security numbers public and leaked five new Sony films, including “Annie,” which opens next week.

The juiciest aspect, though, has been the emails, which of-fer an uncensored peek behind the curtain at how Hollywood does business. In one of the messages, Rudin called Ange-lina Jolie a “minimally talented spoiled brat.” Pascal and Jolie crossed paths this week at an industry breakfast event, but no fireworks flew.

Ironically, the flap over the hack attack could boost box of-fice returns for “The Interview,” which opens on Christmas.

“The circumstances are nothing anyone would covet or want in their marketing plan... But now that it’s hap-pened, it may end up helping the movie,” said Paul Der-

garabedian, senior media analyst for box-office tracker Rentrak. “It’s raised the awareness of the film to an incred-ible level that it oth-erwise might not have enjoyed were it not for this situation.”

TOKYO — Angelina Jolie’s new movie “Unbroken” has not been released in Japan yet, but it has already struck a nerve in a country still wrestling over its wartime past.

The buzz on social networks and in on-line chatter is decidedly negative over the film, which depicts a U.S. Olympic runner who endures torture at a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp during World War II.

Some people are calling for a boycott of the movie, although there is no release date in Japan yet. It hits theaters in the U.S. on Dec. 25.

Others want the ban extended to Jolie, the director — unusual in a nation en-amored with Hollywood, and especially Jolie and her husband Brad Pitt, who have reputations as Japan lovers.

The movie follows the real-life story of Louis Zamperini as told in a 2010 book by Laura Hillenbrand. The book has not been translated into Japanese, but online trailers have provoked outrage. Zamperini, played by Jack O’Connell, survived in a raft for 47 days with two other crewmen after their B-24 bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean, only to be captured by the Japanese and sent to a prisoner-of-war camp.

Especially provocative is a passage in the book that accuses the Japanese of engaging in cannibalism of POWs. It is not clear how much of that will be in the movie, but in Japan that is too much for some.

“There was absolutely no canni-

balism,” said Mutsuhiro Takeuchi, a nationalist-leaning educator and a priest in the traditional Shinto religion. “That is not our custom.”

Takeuchi acknowledged Jolie is free to make whatever movie she wants, stressing that Shinto believes in forgive-and-forget.

But he urged Jolie to study history, say-ing executed war criminals were charged with political crimes, not torture.

“Even Japanese don’t know their own history so misunderstandings arise,” said Takeuchi, who heads his research orga-nization, the Japan Culture Intelligence Association.

Hollywood films that touch on sensitive topics for the Japanese have had a troubled history here. Theaters canceled screenings of the Oscar-winning 2009 documentary “The Cove” about the bloody dolphin hunts in the Japanese town of Taiji after the distributor was deluged with threats from people who said the movie denigrated the “culture” of eating dolphins, although most Japanese have never eaten dolphin or whale meat.

Roland Kelts, a journalist and expert on Japanese culture, called the outburst over “Unbroken,” like the frenzy over “The Cove,” ‘’banal and predictable.”

“None of them have even seen the film, and while it is based on one man’s story, it’s a feature, not a documentary. There are plenty of movies that depict the brutality and inhumanity of war,” he said.(ap)

DENPASAR - From January to December, the mortuary installation of Sanglah Hospital, Denpasar, has already handled at least 42 bodies without identity which are still kept so far. As planned, the bodies will be cremated en masse by the Sanglah Hospital. However, so far the exact time has not been specified.

On the other hand, the reason for immediate cremation was that the body storage had been full, while it

could only hold 24 bodies. “Our party is still holding about 42 bodies in the container. They have no identity pos-ing the evidence of police throughout this year,” explained the Head of San-glah Hospital Forensic Installation, Ida Bagus Putu Alit, when met on Friday afternoon (Dec 12).

He added that some of the bodies had been indeed identified by the family. However, the family then submitted them to Forensic Instal-

lation so that they were still stored while waiting for the time of mass cremation. Based on the data owned by the Forensic Installation, of the total 42 bodies, only nine bodies could have been identified by their family, where they consisted of two foreigners, three babies and four Indonesian citizens, while others remained unidentified. “Only nine bodies could have been identified by their family, and they were handed over to us to be cremated

en masse, while the remaining bodies are still unidentified,” he said.

He added that Sanglah Hospital only had 24 containers so that such condition made the forensic instal-lation overwhelmed. Thus, his party was forced to store two bodies in one container. On that account, he said, those bodies could be stored. “We only have 24 containers. So, one of the solutions is to put two bodies in single container,” he explained.

He added that last year his party only cremated 24 bodies without identity so that the container used to store bodies could still accommodate. However, this year it had been over capacity. He hoped the mass cremation could im-mediately be carried out considering the increase in the cases handled by the forensic installation. “Yes, if pos-sible, it must be cremated as soon as possible because the bodies piled up in the mortuary,” he hoped. The regent was also accompanied by the Head of Klungkung Culture and Tourism Agency I Wayan Sujana, the Head of Klungkung Development Planning Board I Gusti Ngurah Bagus Putra and other related elements. The team of the Hindu University of Indonesia had already explained about the arrangement planning and maintenance of the Kertagosa Park and Puputan Klungkung Monument in the meeting room of the Klungkung Regent, Thursday (Dec 11). For the arrangement of Kertagosa, the team offered a planning concept of city tour which consisted of the art market, monument, Kertagosa, Klungkung Palace to the Puputan Klungkung Square. In the city tour, travelers making a visit would be invited to know about the history of Klungkung kingdom and relief in the building of

Kertagosa Park.Other than the concept of city tour,

the team of Hindu University of Indo-nesia also offered an open concept by opening the garden view of Kertagosa that could give the impression of a cul-tured Kertagosa. In this arrangement, the element of Kertagosa would not much change since Kertagosa was a legacy of cultural heritage.

Each changing element would be given a track record so that it could provide with information on the his-tory of Kertagosa. In addition to the Kertagosa area, in the area of Puputan Square would also be built children playground, culinary zone, linear zone for bike lane, parking space, heritage trade zones and jogging track zone.

A number of public figures who were present also provided some in-puts for the workmanship of Kertagosa

Kertagosa Park proposed to apply city tour concept

SEMArAPUrA - The desire of Klungkung regent, I Nyoman Suwirta, to arrange the Kertagosa Park is not just a dream. It is evident from his seriousness in realizing it. Even, in order to realize it, the regent from Nusa Ceningan has involved a team of the Center for Urban Planning of the Hindu University of Indonesia (Unhi) led by I Gusti Anindia Putra serving as the Head of regional and Urban Planning Studies at the university. Not only that, the seriousness of the regent Suwirta in making the arrangement was seen from the figures involved such as the King of Klungkung Ida Dalem Smaraputra, Dr. Eng. I Wayan Kastawan from the Engineering of Architecture (Udayana University), Komang Anik Purniti from the Heritage Preserva-tion Agency of Gianyar and IB Pangjaya from the Klungkung Cultural Preservation Foundation.

Park arrangement. I.B. Pangjaya, for instance, said that he hoped the con-struction of Kertagosa arrangement should refer to the past culture and think about the need for future devel-opment in order to avoid damage due to air pollution. Meanwhile, Dr. Eng. I Wayan Kastawan suggested that the arrangement of Kertagosa Park could provide a clear and strong impression, such as the structuring of soft case and hard case. He also said that Klungkung should look at the past history because the arrangement of Kertagosa Park

should also go back to the identity and indicate the identity of Klungkung. “In a development, the way we preserve the culture is important, not how we change the heritage into a new one,” said Kastawan.

Meanwhile, Ida Dalem Smarapu-tra hoped that in the construction of Kertagosa Park could be established a preservation team with the tasks of verifying, analyzing and providing a recommendation to the regent about what should be done in the arrangement of Kertagosa Park. In his response, the

Regent Suwirta strongly agreed and required some inputs from the experts in architectural and cultural field for the re-arrangement in order not to damage the cultural heritage of the Kertagosa Park. Regent Suwirta expected the team from the Unhi to continue what had become a desire and the dream for the arrangement of Kertagosa.

“With this arrangement, I’d like to make Klungkung County beautiful so that local people and visitors to Klung-kung can feel at home in Klungkung,” said the regent. (kmb)

BRUSSELS — The city of Brussels, which the famous Belgian cartoon character Tintin roamed as an intrepid reporter, has plenty on offer for any inquisitive mind. And the Belgian capital is making it easier for tourists. It is planning to make more of its center a no-go area for cars, opening up more medieval and 19th century streets for carefree strolling and biking. Enough

of the city’s attractions are free to fill the best part of two vacation days.

The move, announced on Tues-day, is potentially the first step in a plan to fully integrate the Fiumi-cino airport west of Rome into the country’s extensive rail network and eliminate the need for travel-lers from other parts of Italy to

Italy to link Rome airport to Florence, Venice by train

Agence France-Presse

ROME - A trip to Italy taking in both Rome and Venice will get easier from Sunday when some of the country’s high-speed trains start travelling directly to the capital’s main airport.

change trains in the city centre. As of Sunday, two trains a day

will leave for Venice and two will arrive from the floating city, in what will be a 4h 12min trip.

The frecciaargento (silver ar-row) trains leaving the airport will

also serve central Rome, Florence (2h 14min), Bologna (2h 59min) and Padua (3h 57min).

A feasibility study on the in-frastructural work needed to fully link the airport to the high-speed network, which would involve

new terminal facilities and pos-sibly new track around the capital, is due to be handed to the govern-ment before the end of the year by the rail network operator.

Announcing the Fiumicino plans, State Railways (FS) chief executive Michele Mario Elia said he expected privatisation of the railway system to be completed by the first half of 2016.

Details of the privatisation plan

are still sketchy but the govern-ment confirmed last month that it wants to go ahead with a stock market listing of at least some parts of FS.

The state-owned body is a holding company that employs 70,000 people across several different businesses, including the train operator TrenItalia and the company that runs the rail network.

5 free things to see and do in Brussels- Justice Palace

Stroll past painter Pieter Breughel’s old haunts in the Marolles district and go up in a glass elevator to come face to face with Brussels’ humongous, super-eclectic Justice Palace. If ever the “Assassin’s Creed” video game needs a 19th century setting for its hero to climb into and up and over, this is it: columns, marble and statues galore, and, for good measure, so much renovation scaffolding that has been there so long, it is in need of renova-tion too. Court cases, from terror trials to petty theft, are still held there on weekdays. Warning: Don’t lose your way!

- Army Museum

Considering Brussels’ often rainy weather, it’s good to have indoor sightseeing options, and another great one is the Army Museum in the Cinquantenaire Park close to the European Union headquarters. It is one of the few big museums where entry is free, and its collection of planes, parked on the ground or suspended from the ceiling, leaves kids in awe. With the centennial of World War I in full flow, military history is at the center of attention again. Note that the permanent collection is free, not the special exhibits.

- The Atomium

The 1950s look brand-new again now that Brussels’s best-known monu-ment, the Atomium, has been renovated and turned into a gleaming symbol of the city. There is a fee to enter, but the best views are from outside where it costs nothing to behold the 102-meter (335-foot) monument with nine giant balls depicting an iron crystal. The structure was meant to symbolize the power of atomic science and the quest for a better future when Brussels hosted the World’s Fair in 1958. In 2014, it just looks like one of the strang-est buildings around. Still, it is a must-see in Brussels and it is surrounded by a scenic park that leads to the royal palace.

AP Photo/Virginia Mayo, file

In this Aug. 17, 2012 file photo, people walk by a flower carpet on the Grand Place in Brussels.

- Grand Place

Don’t let your jaw drop when you start out at the very center of the old town. The world may have other stunning city squares — Venice’s St. Mark’s Square comes to mind — but count Brussels’ Grand Place among the best. Stand on the gleaming cobblestones, look any which direction and a great piece of architecture will stand out. The 15th-century City Hall is Gothic art at its most elegant. And if its beauty doesn’t fully move you, try figuring out why the white spire doesn’t rise from the middle of the building. Legend has it the architect threw himself from the tower to his death when he realized it was off-center, but it’s likely that various construc-tion issues led to the asymmetry. Guilds, which are professional associations from various crafts and industries, occupy many of Baroque build-ings surrounding the square, including one for Belgium’s beer brewers.

- Galerie De La Reine/Du Roi

A block from the Grand Place is the exquisite Galerie de la Reine/du Roi, a 19th-century jewel of hallowed halls with glass ceilings, apartments lining the upper floors and loads of luxury boutiques and chocolate shops laid out along a magnificent quarter-mile. Other than contaminated by pesticides and boat fuel, the lake denoting one of the leading tourist destinations in Tabanan also expe-riences a silting. Even, the water surface begins to come down two meters from normal condition. “In addition to the silting, the water discharge of Lake Beratan also reduces,” said Chief of Candi Kun-ing customary village, Made Susila Putra, recently at Bedugul.

Not only that, his party also worried about pollution in the tourist area. Allegedly one of the triggers was the fuel of speed boat. Although it was not in worrying condition, the pollution was worth watching.

Related to the silting, assisted by a number of residents his party had dredged the edge of the lake by renting heavy equipment. “A dredging has been undertaken, but human strength is disproportion-ate. Even, the soil of the dredging was forced to just be dumped at lakeside area,” he said.

SEMARAPURA - Aside from songket and endek cloth, the rangrang woven cloth also becomes a hot topic among the lovers of Balinese handi-crafts within the past two years. As the name implies, the rangrang woven cloth produced by the artisans at Paju-kutan village, Nusa Penida subdistrict, Klungkung, has a distinctive motif, namely thin weaving pattern so that it looks transparent. Another distinctive feature is the combination of bright colors with two types of coloring, the natural and chemical coloring substance.

In recent years, the fabric craft having developed since hundreds of years ago is like a pearl that is always sought after by its enthusiasts so that it revives the production centers of rangrang woven cloth.

According to Group Head of Winangun Asri weaving industry, Wayan Sukerta, the rangrang cloth was originally used as paraphernalia when preparing a gebogan (arrangement of fruit and snacks presented to God as gratitude for the blessings) in religious ceremonies held at Karang customary village, Pejukutan village.

However, in keeping with the pas-

Pollution happening to lakes in Bali is getting worse due to agricultural and tourism activities in the area of the lake that produces waste pollution. Similarly, silting of the lake continues to occur as a result of erosion in the catchment area of the lake, where one of which takes place in Lake Beratan.

Lake Beratan goes through siltation

TABANAN - Pollution happening to lakes in Bali is getting worse due to agricultural and tourism activities in the area of the lake that produces waste pollution. Similarly, silting of the lake continues to occur as a result of erosion in the catchment area of the lake, where one of which takes place in Lake Beratan.

He said that initially the lake be-ing famous for the panoramic view of the temple amidst the lake had a depth of approximately 50 meters, but currently it was estimated to only reach 30-40 meters.

On the one side, the lake gave tremendous benefit to people, espe-cially for the availability of clean water needs. Made Susila said the water of Lake Beratan was used to meet the demand for drinking water in the area of Candi Kuning and Baturiti as well as to irrigate the agricultural land spreading across 62 subak areas in Badung County, and only about 1 percent used for irrigating paddy fields in Tabanan.

“All the parties taking advantage of the lake water should preserve the lake itself. But, in fact, so far the concern is still very minimal,” he said.

In line with Made Susila, one of the environmentalists who declined to be named said, that based on the results of research carried out

to meet a dissertation purpose, the quality of the lake in Bali had indeed decreased. In terms of pol-lution, Lake Beratan belonged to high category, particularly due to fuel of motorboat, pesticides,

possibility of waste of restaurants around the lake area as well as lit-tering action by individuals. “For pollution level, the Lake Beratan is the most alarming and then fol-lowed by Lake Buyan tending to be

caused by pesticides,” he said.Related to the silting itself, he

assessed the silting was caused by fertilization factor of the land and then it washed away during rainy season. (kmb28)

One of the craftsmen coalesced into the Asri Winangun weaver group is absorbed in weaving.

sage of time, one of these indigenous heritages and traditions now largely produced by non-mechanical loom was used as a shrine paraphernalia and daily fashion. “Originally, the making of rangrang cloth first used a cagcag loom, so that it could take a long time because of the long process. We are lucky to get the assistance of non-mechanical loom (ATBM) from Bank Indonesia, so that it can speed up the production process,” he said.

According to him, the long process of making rangrang cloth lay in the yarn dyeing process, which spent nearly a week. It happened because the colors used were from natural sub-stances such as morinda roots, indigo leaves, teak leaves, mango tree barks, kepundung, pomegranate bark and flame bush flowers.

“This is what makes the price of rangrang cloth expensive, but there are also inexpensive clothes because they apply synthetic colors. For example, a shawl with chemical colors is sold in the range of IDR 200,000, while those made from natural colors is sold in the price range of IDR 400,000,” he explained.

Although it got a place in the so-

ciety, Wayan Sukerta admitted that it was difficult to preserve the existence of the rangrang cloth as their ancestral heritage, especially with the presence of similar products at lower prices. “Finally, no one wants to continue weaving as it is hard to make and the price is not comparable,” he com-plained.

Headman of Pajukutan, Nyoman

Yudi Adnyanawan, also recognized if the rangrang woven cloth was initially centered at two hamlets namely the Karang and Ampel, Pejukutan village. However, within the past few years, along with the coming of many re-quests, it had expanded to some other villages. “Even, it has been claimed by other villages as their typical handi-craft products,” he said. CAIRO — Egypt’s top prose-cutor referred 439 people to mili-tary tribunals on Saturday for acts of violence including the killing of three policemen last year, while authorities denied entry to a prominent American scholar arriving at Cairo’s international airport, the latest incidents in the country’s sweeping crackdown on dissent.

Security officials said that one group was 139 men he described as Islamists from the southern province of Minya, while another was comprised of 300 f rom the Ni le Del ta province of Beheira. The cases involve last year’s wave of vio-lence that came in retaliation to a bloody police dispersal of an Islamist sit-in.

The officials spoke on condi-tion of anonymity because they was not authorized to speak to the press.

In October, Egypt’s President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi ordered the military to join forces with police in guarding vital state institutions. The decree stipulated that perpe-trators of any attacks against state facilities will be tried in front of

military tribunals.Human Rights Watch said

Egypt’s military courts “lack even the shaky due process guarantees provided by regular courts.” The group said the decree “risks militarizing the prosecution of protesters and other government opponents.”

Earlier this month, 188 peo-ple were sentenced to death on charges of killing 11 policemen. Since the ouster of Islamist Presi-dent Mohammed Morsi last year, Egypt has faced international criticism for mass trials with heavy sentences.

The Musl im Brotherhood group has been branded a terrorist organization, and the crackdown has extended to liberal and leftist critics of the government.

Michele Dunne, senior associ-ate at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and a former U.S. diplomat, was barred from entering Cairo and deported to Germany. She had accepted an invitation to speak at a confer-ence organized by the Egyptian Council for Foreign Affairs, made up primarily of former Egyptian diplomats.(ap)

The march in Washington on Saturday — attended by fam-ily members for Michael Brown and Eric Garner, who were killed by police in recent months, and Amadou Diallo, who was fatally shot by police more than 15 years ago — coincided with nationwide demonstrations that spanned from iconic Fifth Avenue in New York to the streets of San Francisco and the steps of the Boston Statehouse. Most were peaceful protests, al-though about two dozen people were arrested in the Massachusetts capital for disorderly conduct.

“My husband was a quiet man, but he’s making a lot of noise right now,” said Washington protest marcher Esaw Garner, widow of Eric Garner, 43, who died in July after being put in a chokehold by New York City police during an arrest for allegedly selling loose, untaxed cigarettes.

“His voice will be heard. I have five children in this world and we are fighting not just for him but for everybody’s future, for everybody’s past, for everybody’s present, and we need to make it strong.”

Nationally, chanting demonstra-tors also staged “die-ins” as they lay down across intersections and in one city briefly scuffled with police blocking an onramp to a highway.

New York City police said two officers were assaulted by protest-ers on the Brooklyn Bridge when they tried to arrest a man who was attempting to toss a garbage can onto police officers below. Some marchers then blocked traffic on the bridge for about an hour. Po-lice said the officers were treated for bumps and bruises, including a broken nose. Police say there have been no arrests in that incident, but a backpack full of hammers and a mask was found.

Organizers had predicted 5,000 people at the Washington march, but the crowd appeared to far out-number that. They later said they believed as many as 25,000 had shown up. It was not possible to verify the numbers; Washington police do not release crowd es-timates. Garner’s mother, Gwen Carr, called the demonstrations a “history-making moment.”

“It’s just so overwhelming to see all who have come to stand with us today,” she said. “I mean, look at the masses. Black, white, all races, all religions. ... We need to stand like this at all times.”

Joining the Garners in Washing-ton were speakers from the family of Tamir Rice, a 12-year-old killed in Ohio as he played with a pellet gun in a park, and the mother of Amadou Diallo, who in 1999 was shot and killed in the Bronx by four New York City police officers.(ap)

DENPASAR - Kebaya fashion in Bali highly develops ranging from its type to design. One of the kebaya types resurfacing is the painting kebaya. A few years ago, the kebaya painting was once popularized by Aryani Tedjamulja familiarly called Ninik. Now, the painting kebaya is popularized again by Ida Ayu Harmaita Wijayanti.

To some people, painting kebaya is probably still something new, whereas it has existed previously. Harmaita said recently that painting kebaya was the result of direct hand painting by the artist. She initiated the painting kebaya business when she was in college precisely in August 2011 with initial capital of IDR 5 million. It began when she joined a business idea competition at the Udayana University. She went to be the first winner. From that moment, she began to run her business as entrepreneur of painting kebaya. “The products were sold first to my colleague friends,” she recalled while slightly smiled.

She and her boyfriend who has now become her husband just ran the business to increase pocket money. After marriage, she and her husband began to seriously run the business and developed it. “At the beginning, we suffer great losses. In the first year we were still in the learning phase, while in the second year we already started the home production,” she explained.

While building the business, she attended many competitions and trainings. From there, she obtained additional capital for her business. Besides, she also diligently participated in exhibitions to introduce her products to the public in the country and overseas. After three years, she opened a boutique, precisely in May 2014. She also described about the procedures for the making of painting kebaya. Cloth as the medium of painting was stretched so that it would be easier to paint. Before painting the cloth, it was first made a mold. The mold was then sketched on the cloth to be painted with special paint. After that, it was embroidered at the edges to make it more presentable.

“The drying phase should be carried out extra carefully and must dry completely,” she said when attending entrepreneurship training. In the production process, she claimed to get involved directly as a quality controller to ensure the product quality was really good. Each painter could yield two paintings every day. The small business named the Anacaraka offered various motifs such as the Legong and Balinese dancers, Balinese girl balanc-ing jug, flowers, various birds and others. “We make various motifs characterizing Bali, namely the typicality of Bali,” she said. While showing some motifs of the painting kebaya, she resumed her story. According to her, all kinds of cloth could be painted, but highly depending color absorbability on the cloth. “Chiffon, cotton, organdy, satin and shantung can be painted,” she explained. This three-year old business already employed nine employees, five of whom were kebaya painters, one supervisor and three others handled the embroidery or sewing.

Frankly, she also spoke about difficulties faced as a small busi-ness owner, namely qualified human resources, especially painter. “Indeed, many people can paint, but not all can meet the criteria I want,” she said. She really wanted to produce the best quality in her production house. In addition, the weather was also an important factor determining the quality of her painting kebaya because the painting quality was determined by the dryness of paint adorned by the kebaya cloth. “If the weather is sunny, it can dry in a day,” she explained.

In addition, the shortage of human resources caused her to be unable to produce in large quantities considering the paint-ing kebaya was made manually. So far, the painting kebaya was demanded by many local people considering it was still liked best in Bali ahead of religious ceremony. But, she also explained that her painting kebaya began to draw the interests of people from outside Bali either from Java, Jakarta or other regions in Indonesia. Even, she said, the housewife of military personnel was then required to use the painting kebaya. As a result, the business just running for three years had been able to achieve a turnover of IDR 30 million per month. Amidst the unemployment in Indonesia, she could actually create job opportunities for the community. (may)

As a result of the attack by mil-lions of caterpillars, the residents were disgusted and uncomfortable because the caterpillars did not only undermine the teak garden but also invaded people’s home around the teak garden. From observation, the black caterpillars were hanging under the teak tree spreading across 0.50 hectare and scattered on the road and crept in the courtyard of residents. So far, people did not take any action because the number of caterpil-lars reached millions of heads. Residents could just report the incident to village authority and hoped there would be a concrete action by related parties.

Ketut Putra Utama, 52, a resi-dent of Pendem hamlet, Pendem

village, Jembrana, said on Satur-day (Dec 13) the attack of cater-pillars actually had occurred since the past three days. He said that more than hundreds of thousands of the caterpillars first attacked teak trees growing in the garden near residential area. Over time, the caterpillars spread to people’s homes, even to get into the bed-room and piled on bed.

According to him, if the cater-pillar attached directly to the body, people would feel itchy, but the black caterpillars were different from the caterpillars once spread in Jembrana. The caterpillars, he said, only caused uncomfortable and disgusted look.

Meanwhile, the other residents told if the caterpillars currently

attacking residential areas were quite distinct from the caterpillars attacking last year. The current caterpillars were smaller, black and thinly hairy. But, the cater-pillars attacking last year were somewhat large, reddish black and hairy.

He said that he did not take any action yet against those caterpil-lars. He just cleaned them up by sweeping when the caterpillars went into the house. The caterpil-lars had been checked by the Pest and Disease Control Section, the Jembrana Agriculture Agency, Nyoman Juna, and colleagues. According to him, his party al-ready took some samples of the caterpillars and would be checked to laboratory in Denpasar. (kmb)

The bill, which narrowly cleared the House of Representa-tives on Thursday and survived a series of procedural hurdles to pass the Senate 56 votes to 40 on Saturday, funds nearly all federal government agencies through next September.

But by funding the Depart-ment of Homeland Security until only February, it sets up a showdown over Obama’s controversial immigration plan early next year, when a Con-gress under full Republican control will take another shot at rolling back the executive order shielding millions from deportation.

The package provides $5 billion for operations to counter the Islamic state extremist group and $5.4 billion in emergency funding to respond to the Ebola

crisis.Despite the sometimes dra-

matic bickering between the two parties in the special Saturday session, the bill needed bipar-tisan cooperation to pass the Democratic-led chamber.

“A broken process created by years of Senate Democrat control has yielded an agreement that is less than perfect,” number two Senate Republican John Cornyn said in a statement.

“Despite this, this legislation slashes spending for some of the president’s most overreaching agencies like the IRS and EPA, blocks the administration’s plan to transfer dangerous terrorists onto American soil, and al-leviates small businesses from some of the job-killing regula-tions stifling growth across the country.”

Of the 40 no votes, 22 were Democrats, many of them furi-ous that negotiators inserted deeply controversial policy rid-ers into the package, including one that rolls back key finan-cial regulations on Wall Street banks.

Another eviscerates parts of existing campaign finance law by allowing wealthy donors to contribute dramatically more money to political campaigns than currently allowed.

Senator Richard Blumenthal said he was pleased the bill averted a government shutdown but could not vote for a package so “poisoned by special favors flagrantly contrary to the public interest.”

MILAN — Tens of thousands of union workers marched through more than 50 Italian cities on Friday to protest government economic reforms that they say erode their rights.

Non-union, anti-government pro-testers clashed with police in some cities, including Milan, where stu-dents dressed as Santa Claus jumped the fence at a regional government office building and threw bottles and other objects. Police dispersed that protest with tear gas; authorities said 11 officers were injured.

The general strike, which shut down basic services across Italy, is one of the largest by two of the na-tion’s most powerful union groups against a center-left government, which had tradit ionally cozied up to unions. The strike created a patchwork of chaos as trains, buses, schools, ports and other services closed down.

Premier Matteo Renzi said the right to strike must be protected but insisted his tougher line is necessary

to return the economy to growth and create jobs.

“The future belongs not to those who are afraid but those who have the cour-age and the desire to change,” Renzi told a business forum in Istanbul.

In a sign of discord within his own Democratic Party, some of its members joined the marches. Stefano Fassina, a former deputy economics minister, told Sky TG24 said it was important that someone from the party marched alongside the workers.

Susanna Camusso, the leader of CGIL, Italy’s largest union, led a protest march in the northern city of Turin, headquarters of carmaker Fiat and a symbolic city for the nation’s shrinking industrial might. She said changes need to be made “with and not against the people.”

The unions are protesting spend-ing cuts and labor market reforms that will make it easier for companies to fire workers that Renzi has passed in a bid to attract foreign invest-ment. (ap)

MADRID - Spanish Prime Min-ister Mariano Rajoy on Saturday promised fresh reforms to boost Spain’s economic recovery and warned he would continue to resist the drive for independence of the Catalonia region.

Responding to calls for consti-tutional reform to answer Catalan separatists’ demands, Rajoy vowed that his conservative Popular Party would ward off any threat to the unity of Spain and tried to shift the focus to the tentative economic recovery.

“We will support any future re-form that is necessary, but for the Popular Party, national sovereignty is not negotiable,” he said in a speech to party leaders.

“What Spain needs now is more economic and social reforms to im-prove people’s lives and overcome the crisis definitively, and there will be more,” he said, also promising further anti-corruption measures, without elaborating.

Rajoy did not name Catalonia, but the speech was one of his most high-profile statements on the con-stitutional question since the region held a symbolic vote last month on

whether to break away from Spain.Rajoy has consistently vowed

to preserve the unity of Spain as it recovers from six years of economic crisis that have left it with a current unemployment rate of nearly 24 percent.

Faced with lawsuits over the banned symbolic polls on November 9, Catalan leaders are now debating the next step in their drive for a full vote on independence for their rich northeastern region.

The opposition Socialist Party also opposes Catalan independence but has called for a reform to the system of devolved regional govern-ments in Spain’s 1978 constitution to answer separatists’ demands.

Rajoy has not ruled out a con-stitutional reform but rejects any bid to break up Spain. He said on Saturday he was set on integrating the country more closely with the European Union.

“Our constitution has been re-formed twice and it will doubtless be reformed again, as many times as required in the general interests of the Spanish people or for develop-ing the common European project.” (afp)

Chief of Bali Narcotic Prison, Bambang Maryanto, when asked for his confirmation said the project under the Ministry of Justice and Hu-man Rights was designed to be com-pleted at end of December. Currently, the development already reached 93.5 percent. With the remaining time of approximately 17 days, he was optimistic if the construction could be completed on target. “Now, it just needs to accomplish the residential block and policlinic room. Similarly, it also still works on the finishing of some parts of the building,” he explained.

Considering that Tiga village area has not been served with clean water of the Municipality Waterworks (PDAM), after the prison building could be completed, his party would build artesian wells at two points. As planned, the artesian wells would be built with a depth of 100 meters. “All this time, the Tiga village area has not been reached by the clean water

services. To that end, we will make artesian well,” he said. In addition to vital facilities such as artesian well, before the prison building could be operated it still had to wait for the completeness of kitchen utensils. As a result, the narcotic prison building in Bangli could have been operated from around April. So far, due to some existing buildings could have been occupied as of 1 December, he and several other officers already started to base at the newly Narcotic Prison.

Bambang Maryanto said that ac-cording to its capacity, the Narcotic Prison would accommodate a total of 260 prisoners in two residential blocks. Other than narcotic inmates of the Kerobokan Prison, all the narcotic prisoners in the prisons and detention centers scattered throughout Bali would also be transferred to this nar-cotic prison. However, considering the fairly limited capacity, the transfer of narcotic prisoners would be made

gradually. As reported all this time, the

construction of narcotic prison in Bangli was made gradually. The first phase was undertaken in 2013 and the second one had been done since July 2014. With the budget worth IDR 23.5 billion, the building that could be completed this year included policlinic room, registration room, the addition of compound wall along 98 meters, gatehouse and finishing work of kitchen building having been done in the first stage. In appropriate with the project contract of narcotic prison construction, it was worked on for 170 calendar days. So that it was targeted to be completed by this December.

The Narcotic Prison in Bangli was built to reduce the crowdedness in a number of prisons in Bali, where one of them was the Kerobokan Prison. All this time, the narcotic inmates were combined with other general inmates. (ina)

INDONESIAW RLD

At least 26 people have been confirmed dead after torrential downpours triggered the landslide hitting Jemblung village in central Java late Friday, National Disaster Management Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said.

“We found six more bodies today. Eighty-two people are still missing,” he told AFP.

Hundreds of rescuers were dig-ging through the mud with shovels and their bare hands in a desperate hunt for any survivors.

“I am very worried,” a sobbing Sutinem, whose 12 family members including her children were buried in the landslide, told AFP.

The 45-year-old, who like many Indonesians goes by only one name, said so far only the body of her mother had been found. She was not at the village when the landslide hit as she was working in west Java.

“I was shocked to see that my village was flattened to the ground... I pray that the government will find them quickly,” she said.

“We are trying our best to look (for) those still buried. It’s a big challenge because we are still using

manual tools and the affected area is very muddy,” military official Edi Rahmatullah told reporters.

Provincial search and rescue agency chief Agus Haryono said rescue efforts have been slow because the ground was still un-stable.

“The affected area is a large valley surrounded by hills. The soil is loose and muddy so we have to be very careful when digging to prevent more landslides,” he said, adding that sniffer dogs were being deployed to detect bodies.

“The chances of finding anyone alive at this point is slim, but who knows? We just hope and pray that we can find survivors,” he told AFP.

Authorities were using heavy equipment to clear a three-metre high pile of fallen trees and rubble on the main road leading to the site of the disaster.

“Today the search for survivors will be carried out using heavy excavation equipment. The land-slide has blocked road access since yesterday,” Nugroho said.

“Part of the road has now been

cleared,” he added. Around 1,250 rescuers, includ-

ing police, soldiers and volunteers were involved in the search opera-tions.

Fifteen people were injured, including 11 seriously, and 577 people were evacuated to temporary shelters, Nugroho said.

“Many of (the survivors) were injured from being hit by debris and are being treated in hospital,” he said, adding that survivors were in need of food, blankets, and medicines.

President Joko Widodo, who ar-rived in Central Java’s provincial district of Banjarnegara on Sunday, stressed the need to speed up rescue efforts.

“Earlier I visited the landslide site in Banjarnegara to look at the situation there. Although logisti-cal support has been provided, the evacuation process must be strengthened and hastened,” he wrote on his Facebook page.

“I urge Indonesians to be vigilant as there are hundreds of locations around us which are prone to land-slides,” he added. (afp)

Rescuers remove the body of a victim of landslides that swept away houses in Jemblung village, Central Java, Indonesia, Saturday, Dec. 13, 2014. Scores of people died and more than 100 are missing following landslides caused by heavy rain in central Indonesia on Friday, local government officials said Saturday.

“I think Mr. Abe is the only choice we have considering from what I heard and saw in the re-ports,” retiree Hiroshi Yamada said as he came out of a downtown Tokyo polling station.

He was echoing sentiments shared by many Japanese. Despite weakening popularity ratings, a recession and messy campaign finance scandals, Abe’s Liberal Democratic Party was virtually certain to triumph thanks to Ja-pan’s tendency toward a one-party political system, voter apathy and a lack of viable alternatives.

Tokyo’s municipal government said turnout in the city was lower than the last election two years ago, with 26 percent of voters showing up as of midafternoon Sunday, compared with nearly 32 percent as of that time in 2012. The final nationwide turnout then was a record-low 59.3 million people.

A landslide victory could im-prove Abe’s chances of pushing ahead with ambitious political and economic reforms — including

revising Japan’s pacifist constitu-tion — with or without the support of the Liberal Democrats’ coali-tion partner, the Buddhist-backed Komei Party. Abe called Sunday’s snap election for the lower house, saying that he wanted a fresh mandate for his economic program and that he would step down if the Liberal Democrats lose their majority.

But weakness among opposi-tion parties makes that unlikely: The Liberal Democrats were field-ing 352 candidates versus 198 for the leading opposition Democratic Party of Japan. The second-largest number of candidates was running with the Japan Communist Party, which holds only a handful of seats in parliament but is a popular choice as a protest vote.

The Democratic Party held power from 2009 to 2012, but its popularity plunged after it failed to deliver on campaign pledges and struggled in the aftermath of the 2011 earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disasters.

Abe took office two years ago

promising to revive the stagnant economy and restore Japan’s fad-ing stature. Since then, share prices have risen and many companies have reported record profits as the Japanese yen has weakened in value, thanks to aggressive mon-etary easing. But the economic recovery that began before Abe took office has faltered in recent months, with the country returning to recession after a sales tax hike chilled demand among consumers and businesses.

Many voters were perplexed over the decision to call an elec-tion. “I think two years (since Abe became prime minister) is too soon to decide whether his policy failed or not,” said Yoshiko Takahashi, a Tokyo businesswoman.

Surveys ahead of the election showed many voters planning to stay away, and heavy snow in northern Japan — the top news Sunday morning — could also adversely affect turnout. But the government reported a 10 percent increase in absentee ballots over the previous election. (ap)

BERLIN — Germany’s most successful TV show is ending after a 33-year-run. “Wetten, dass..?” — or “Wanna bet?” — combined celebrity chat and everyday people performing improbable feats, from opening beer bottles with steamrollers to identifying animal dung by its smell.

Seen roughly six times a year and always on a Saturday night, the show aired more than 200 times, and attracted over 20 million viewers in the 1980s. But audiences grew tired of the formula, and viewership dropped as criticism grew.

Foreign guests expressed bewilderment at the antics of the contestants and host, and a horrific on-air accident in 2010 that left a man paralyzed helped hasten its demise.

Public broadcaster ZDF says guests on Saturday’s final show will include American actor Ben Stiller and former figure skating champion Katarina Witt.(ap)

BEIJING — Ten Chinese miners were found dead Sunday hours after they were trapped underground in an explosion at a mine in the northeastern province of Heilongjiang, state media said.

The cause of the incident at the Xingyun Mine in the city of Jixi was under investigation, the state-run China News Service said.

China’s mines are the world’s deadliest, although a push to boost safety has considerably lowered death tolls in accidents. Just over 1,000 deaths in 604 coal mining accidents were reported in 2013, down from more than 6,000 per year a decade ago.

At the same time, demand for coal has plateaued as China’s econ-omy decelerates from the headlong rush of the last decade. (ap)

People cast their votes in Japan’s parliamentary elections at a polling station in Tokyo, Sun-day, Dec. 14, 2014.

Abe’s ruling party poised for Japan election win

TOKYO — Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe looked set to win a strong majority in a parliamentary election Sunday viewed as less of a verdict on his policies than an acquiescence to the ruling party’s growing power. From remote islands to high mountains where polling stations stood ready with firecrackers to scare away bears, voters were choosing among 1,191 candidates for the 475-seat lower house.

Khan (30-3) won round after round using the same formula, jab-bing at Alexander and following it with right hands that found their mark more often than they missed. The British fighter didn’t knock down Alexander (26-3) and never seemed to really hurt him, but was impressive enough to solidify his spot in the lineup for a possible fight next year with Mayweather.

Khan’s quickness was too much from the opening bell as he kept the southpaw Alexander on the outside and was first with his punches in most exchanges. Khan pitched a shutout on one ringside scorecard, winning 120-108, while the other judges scored it 119-109 and 118-110. The Associated Press scored it 119-109.

“I didn’t call Floyd Mayweather out with total confidence before, but now I feel I proved to everyone I deserve that fight,” Khan said.

Promoter Oscar De La Hoya said it is a fight he would love to make, if Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao can’t come to terms for a bout next year. Mayweather said

Friday he wanted to fight Pacquiao, but immediately put conditions on negotiations for what would be the richest fight ever.

“He almost had a perfect fight with a southpaw, which is very complicat-ed,” De La Hoya said. “He has proven himself over and over again. You can see the determination in Khan’s eyes that he wants Mayweather.” Khan never seemed to hurt Alexander but was in control throughout. His dominance was shown by ringside stats that had him landing 243 of 563 punches to 91 of 461 for former two-time champion.

“I’m getting better with age,” the 28-year-old said. “The Mayweather fight didn’t happen last year, but I now believe I’ve earned it this year.” Alexander pressed forward through the fight, but never seemed able to solve the speed and accurate punching of Khan.

“I was having a hard time catch-ing him,” Alexander said. “I tried to follow the game plan but something just wasn’t right.” Late in the fight, Khan started opening up more, throwing flurries of punches to

Alexander’s head. Alexander kept advancing, but didn’t throw nearly enough punches and landed even fewer even as he needed a knock-out to pull out the fight. Still, there were scattered boos from the crowd of 7,768 at the MGM Grand in the final round.

The stakes were high for both fighters on a night where top wel-terweights jockeyed for position on two different cards on the Las Vegas Strip. Timothy Bradley, who lost his last fight to Manny Pacquiao, drew with Diego Chaves in an HBO fight down the street at the Cosmopolitan.

Khan was a 3-1 favorite against Alexander, a former champion who has held titles at 140 and 147 pounds. The British fighter was of-fered a chance to fight Alexander for a title at this time last year, but declined the fight because he thought he would get a bout with Mayweather instead. Mayweather, though, picked Marcos Maidana as his opponent, and this time Khan didn’t really have a choice but to fight Alexander. (ap)

INDIANAPOLIS — LaMarcus Aldridge had 19 points and 14 rebounds, Damian Lillard added 18 points and the Portland Trail Blazers finished their five-game road trip with a 95-85 victory over the Indiana Pacers on Saturday night. C.J. Watson had 23 points and Rodney Stuckey added 14 for the struggling Pacers, who have lost eight straight. It’s Indiana’s longest losing streak since an eight-game reverse in December 2009.

Portland shot 77.8 percent from the field against the Pacers’ usually stout defense in the second quarter, turning a one-point deficit into a 58-38 halftime lead. The Trail Blazers led by as much as 29 early in the third, and Indiana never got closer than eight.

Indiana took a 23-22 lead in the final minute of the first quarter when Stuckey scored on a fast break. It was the only the eighth time all season the Pacers took a lead into the second quarter — and it didn’t last long.

Chris Kaman started Portland’s

surge with a 4-foot hook shot. Steve Blake and Wesley Matthews scored Portland’s next three baskets, all 3-pointers, and when Blake fol-lowed that flurry with a three-point play, Portland led 36-27 and never looked back.

The Golden State Warriors won their franchise-record 15th straight game, with Stephen Curry scor-ing 29 points and Klay Thompson adding 25 in a 105-98 victory over the Dallas Mavericks. Curry and Thompson each scored 17 in the first half as Golden State ran out to a 28-point lead. The Mavericks got as close as seven in the final minute of the game. Monta Ellis scored 24 points to lead the Mavericks.

At Charlotte, North Carolina, Joe Johnson scored 22 points, Deron Williams and Mason Plumlee had double-doubles and the Brooklyn Nets beat the Charlotte Hornets 114-87 for its second straight vic-tory. Johnson was 9 of 16 from the field and 4 of 6 from 3-point range as the Nets shot 16 of 23 from be-yond the arc. (ap)

Barcelona missed the goals and attacking verve of striker Neymar, who was left out with a sore left ankle. The closest Barcelona came to scoring was Lionel Messi’s free kick that hit the crossbar in the second half. Strike partner Luis Suarez remained without a goal in the league since returning from a four-month biting ban. He has scored twice in the Champions League.

“It’s always difficult to score when the rival packs his defense in his area,” Barcelona manager Luis Enrique said. “I would prefer to be higher up the standings, but there is a lot of league left.” Valencia

had no such trouble scoring at home in a 3-0 win over Rayo Val-lecano, striking three times in the first half at Mestalla Stadium to put the result beyond doubt before the break.

Forward Sofiane Feghouli scored in the 13th and 34th minutes, and Pablo Piatti in the 36th. Valencia played the final 20 minutes with 10 men after Andre Gomes was sent off.

Valencia remained in fifth place but closed to within one point of fourth-place Sevilla. It also ended a four-game winless run. “Our bad stretch is over,” Valencia coach Nuno Espirito Santo said.

Malaga remained pegged one point behind Valencia in sixth place with a 1-0 victory at home over Celta Vigo. Samuel Garcia headed in what proved to be the winner in the 21st.

Celta’s winless streak in the league since its last victory at Barcelona reached five rounds. Also, Cordoba and Levante continued hovering above the relegation zone after a 0-0 draw. On Friday, Madrid won 4-1 at Almeria with Cristiano Ronaldo scor-ing twice in their 20th straight win in all com-petitions. (ap)

ROME — Stefano Mauri scored twice as Lazio beat Atalanta 3-0 to move provisionally into a tie for third with Genoa in Serie A on Satur-day. After a dull first half, Mauri scored in the 51st and 71st minutes and Senad Lulic added another for the Roman club in the 81st at the Stadio Olimpico.

Lazio and Genoa are each one point ahead of Sampdoria in the race for third place and the final Champions League berth. On Sunday, Genoa hosts second-place Roma, and Sampdoria visits league leader Juventus. Earlier, host Palermo beat nine-man Sassuolo 2-1 to move into the top half of the table and extend its unbeaten streak to seven matches.

The Sicilian side leapfrogged Sassuolo by moving into ninth place, while Sassuolo, which had its unbeaten streak halted at eight, dropped to 11th.

In Rome, Mauri’s first goal was a tap-in following a cross from Felipe Anderson. Then the Lazio captain scored his sixth goal in 10 appear-ances with a shot from the edge of the area following another setup from Anderson. Lulic headed in a cross from Dusan Basta.

Atalanta didn’t produce a shot on goal until Carlos Carmona launched an effort from 25 yards in the 83rd, which Lazio goalkeeper Federico Marchetti controlled easily.

In Palermo, substitute Andrea Belotti scored the winner three minutes into added time with an angled shot from the edge of the box follow-ing a perfect setup from midfielder Franco Vazquez. Palermo took the lead when Luca Rigoni headed in from a Paulo Dybala corner three minutes in.

Sassuolo goalkeeper Andrea Consigli was sent off in the 66th for a last-man foul on Enzo Maresca outside the area following a long pass from Dybala, a 21-year-old Argentine forward who has seven goals this season and is gaining interest on the transfer market.

Sassuolo substitute Leonardo Pavoletti equalized with his first Serie A goal in the 85th, three minutes after going on, after defender Sinisa Andelkovic gifted him the ball.

After Belotti’s goal, Sassuolo defender Paolo Cannavaro was shown a direct red card six minutes into added time for a hard foul on Dybala. (ap)

LONDON - Manchester City midfielder Frank Lampard notched a trademark goal on Saturday to draw level with Thierry Henry in fourth place on the list of leading Premier League scorers. Lampard arrived late in the box to steer in a cross and secure his team’s 1-0 win at Leicester City, the 175th league goal of his prolific career.

The evergreen 36-year-old’s latest crucial contribution to City’s cause left manager Manuel Pellegrini reiterating his keenness to ensure the champions enjoy the former Chelsea favourite’s services on loan for the rest of the season.

“There have been no serious dis-cussions but we know exactly what we must do,” said Pellegrini, after

watching Lampard score his sixth goal for the club since his close-season acquisition. “Frank wants to stay, we want to keep him. Now we must resolve the problem with New York City and MLS.”

Lampard is scheduled to join City’s sister club New York City in MLS at the end of the month but despite the American season starting in March, both Pellegrini and Lampard hope he can be around to bolster City’s title de-fence until May. “He is very important. Frank has been very useful for us in this moment,” added Pellegrini.

Of his goal, Lampard told the BBC: “I’m very happy with it, I thought it was going to be out of my reach. “I have respect for Henry, he is one of the greatest in Premier League history

and to be up there with him is incred-ible,” Lampard added, referring to the former Arsenal and France striker.

Lampard scored the vast majority of his goals for Chelsea and his land-mark strike for City kept his new team just three points adrift of his former club at the top of the table. “Those are the kind of games we need to get results, we needed to grind them out,” Lampard said. “We were nowhere near the force we can be sometimes, but you have to show two sides to your game and I think we did that today.”

Lampard started his career at West Ham United before moving to Chel-sea in 2001 and he scored 147 league goals for the Stamford Bridge club before joining City on loan at the end of last season. (rtr)

RABAT, Morocco — CONCA-CAF champion Cruz Azul ousted Asian champ Western Sydney Wan-derers 3-1 in extra time and joined New Zealand’s Auckland City in the Club World Cup semifinals for the first time on Saturday. Cruz Azul, on debut, will play Real Madrid on Tuesday in Rabat, and Auckland City will face Copa Libertadores champ San Lorenzo on Wednesday in Marrakech.

In unrelenting rain in Rabat, Western Sydney scored first against the run of play with Iacopo La Rocca

taking an opportunist shot from a poor clearance.

Western Sydney midfielder Mat-thew Spiranovic was then sent off for a second yellow card for hand ball, and Cruz Azul laid siege for the remaining 15 minutes. It didn’t pay off until the 89th, when a penalty was received and captain Gerardo Torrado leveled, forcing extra time.

It became worse for Wanderers at the start of the extra period when captain and defender Nikolai Topor-Stanley was issued his second yel-low. Cruz Azul pounced, with Hugo

Pavone knocking a rebound into an empty net in the 108th, and Torrado converting another penalty for hand ball in the 118th.

Auckland advanced to its first semifinal in its sixth attempt when it beat Algeria’s Es Setif 1-0. Auckland, which defeated local side Moghreb Tetouan in a penalty shootout on Wednesday to make the quarterfi-nals, delivered the winner early in the second half, when a corner kick landed in the box, and John Irving beat a defender and shot inside the near post. (ap)

PARIS — Reserve goalkeeper Azbe Jug cost his side two goals as Bordeaux lost 2-1 at Nantes in the French league on Saturday and saw its push for Champions League places come to a halt. Jug, who replaced the injured Cedric Carrasso, could not get a firm hand on the ball when midfielder Jordan Veretout opened the scoring from Alejandro Bedoya’s assist in the 23rd minute.

Jug was unlucky on Nantes’ second goal after the ball took a deflection off Bordeaux striker Cheikh Diabate from a corner and rebounded onto the post before hitting the goalkeeper’s head in the 66th and finishing in the net. The visitors equalized through Kian

Hansen’s own goal.The loss ended fifth-place Bor-

deaux’s three-game unbeaten run, and kept Willy Sagnol’s side seven points behind leader Marseille while Nantes snapped a four-game winless streak. “We did not play bad, we created many chances, but we were unlucky,” Jug said after his third league match this season. “On the first goal I dived unsuccessfully, and on the second there was not much I could do. The ball hit the post, then my head, it’s just hard luck.”

Both Rennes and Montpellier failed to capitalize on Bordeaux’s loss as the Brittany club slipped to a second consecutive defeat, a 2-0 loss at Bastia, while Montpellier conceded a 3-3 draw to Lens on

Yoann Touzghar’s 80th-minute equalizer. Rennes remained in sixth place, three points ahead of Montpellier, which led 2-0 after 16 minutes and failed to hold onto the lead twice on a deteriorating home pitch.

Also, Lorient moved three points away from the relegation zone with a 3-1 defeat of Metz, and Brazilian striker Diego scored twice as Reims came from behind to beat 10-man Evian 3-2.

After winning two of its previous three games to move just one point behind fourth-place Saint-Etienne, Bordeaux was confident it could extend its seven-match unbeaten run at Stade de La Beaujoire.

Thomas Toure came close to

putting Bordeaux ahead in the seventh minute after the forward collected a high ball and dribbled past goalkeeper Remy Riou, only to see his shot saved on the line by defender Papy Djilobodji.

Bordeaux looked in complete control but a lapse in concentration allowed Veretout to score his sixth goal this season. Bedoya collected a long ball from Riou on the right side, and found Veretout with a fine low pass in the box that he converted from a tight angle.

But Nantes was made to pay five minutes later for a costly mistake from Djilobodji, who gave the ball away to Whabi Khazri on the right side. Khazri found space in the box to pick out Gregory Sertic, whose

low cross was deflected by defender Hansen into his own goal.

A well-organized Bordeaux midfield then made it difficult for Michel Der Zakarian’s side to get possession, but lack of quality in the final third hindered the visi-tors’ attacks. Bedoya sent a header inches wide in the 51st minute as Nantes looked more adventurous and tried to apply pressure early in the second half.

After Jug helped the ball into his own net, Bordeaux pushed and came close three minutes from time when substitute Diego Rolan’s header was cleared off the line by Oswaldo Vizcarrondo, then Bedoya blocked another header from Lamine Sane with his chest. (ap)

(ap)

(ap)

(afp)

26 dead, 82 missing in Indonesian landslide

JEMBLUNG, Central Java - Rescuers searching for more than 80 people missing after a landslide in Indonesia deployed bulldozers and excavators Sunday to battle their way through roads strewn with debris to the site of the disaster, officials said.

(ap)

Traders Gregory Rowe, left, and Michael Zicchinolfi work on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange, Friday, Dec. 12, 2014. The US Congress passed a $1.1-trillion spending bill for fiscal year 2015 Saturday amid intense partisan wrangling, sending the measure to President Barack Obama and averting a government shutdown.

(ina)

Chocoholics have Marcolini, Neuhaus, Mary and Corne within smelling distance. The list also includes Godiva, a Belgian brand that’s become ubiquitous in the United States. Gaze left, right, front and back amid the chocolatiers and you realize what it must have been like for Charlie in Roald Dahl’s “Chocolate Factory.” Of course you’ll have to pay to indulge in a taste, but smells and sights are free. Some of the shops look like museums, with pralines exhibited liked prized possessions behind glass.

(kmb28)

sage of time, one of these indigenous heritages and traditions now largely produced by non-mechanical loom was used as a shrine paraphernalia and daily fashion.

(kmb)

“Marine debris has become a phenomenon every year. One thing should be understood is that government cannot stop the arrival of the rubbish. This issue becomes a particular concern because we do not want if tourists will be disappointed with the tourist des-tinations they visit so that it can tarnish the tourism image,” said the Head of Badung Government

Tourism Office, Tjokorda Raka Darmawan.

As a precaution, the Badung Government Tourism Office has sent a letter to the association of tourism, management of beach destination and other stakeholders related to tourism. In essence, the office requested the association or the management of the beach to inform about the phenomenon of

marine debris. So, there would be no impression if the rubbish was not addressed properly.

“From the beginning, we have asked the association to notify travelers that it is an annual phe-nomenon. The rubbish is coming up to next 3 months. After cleaned up today, it will come again and again. We do hope there will be no impression as if the coming rub-

bish is left untreated. Definitely the ranks of the Badung Sanitation and Landscaping Agency (DKP) con-tinuously work hard to overcome the problem of marine debris,” he said.

Furthermore, Raka Darmawan said that until November 2014, the number of tourist arrivals to Badung had reached 3.3 million people. It meant that the target in 2014 had been exceeded. Meanwhile, by the end of this year the number of visit was expected to reach 3.5 million people. By country, the travelers were still predominated by Aus-

tralia, China, Japan, Malaysia and Singapore.

So far, the Badung government sought to improve the quality of tourist destinations. In relation to this matter, central government targeted the number of tourist ar-rival to Indonesia to reach 20 mil-lion people in 2019. Bali chiefly Badung should continuously make an improvement as becoming a gateway to Indonesia. Moreover, the neighboring countries were more aggressively improving the quality of their tourist destinations. (kmb25)
