National police chief Sutarman said there were indica-tions that militants were heading to areas they wished to target, and may be assembling bombs.

“The terrorists have cells everywhere and they are ac-tive. We are continuing to pursue them,” Sutarman, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, told reporters in Jakarta.

He did not give details about any of the suspected terror groups.

Indonesia’s small Christian minority has come under increasing pressure in recent years from Islamic hardlin-ers, who have forced the closure of churches and protested

outside places of worship. However the minority has not been targeted by a ter-

ror attack -- a bombing or a shooting -- since 2011 when a suicide bomber attacked a church in Solo, Central Java province.

Most such terror attacks in recent times have been low-level and targeted police.

Since 2000, when improvised bombs disguised as Christ-mas gifts delivered to churches and clergymen killed 19 people and injured scores more across Indonesia, police have gone on high alert at the festive season.

But officials rarely give such specific warnings as that

issued on Thursday.Sutarman said that as well as the capital, militants were

thought to be targeting central Sulawesi island, parts of which are known as a terror hotbed, and other regions which he declined to name.

“We call on people to stay calm as police will ensure security for those celebrating Christmas and New Year,” he said.

He added that police were monitoring the suspected terror cells and would only move against them when their plans were thought to be at an advanced stage.

The late Paul Walker (“Fast & Furi-ous”) capably and compellingly rises to the demands of the role of Nolan Hayes, a loving husband who races his pregnant wife Abigail to a New Orleans hospital when she goes into labor unexpectedly. Onscreen titles announce the extent of the couple’s wrong-place/wrong-time hospital arrival: the early hours of Aug. 29, 2005, just as gale-force winds caused by Katrina relentlessly pummel the Cres-cent City.

Abigail dies during childbirth, but the stunned Nolan has little time to mourn. His newborn child is placed in a ventila-tor, where, a doctor explains, she must remain for at least 48 hours. Unfortu-nately, when the city’s levee system fails, floodwaters force the evacuation of the hospital. Worse still, the ventilator cannot be moved, so Nolan must remain behind

with his daughter until help arrives. It’s a long wait.

Through effective use of actual news-casts from the period, “Hours” under-scores a brutal irony — Katrina actually missed New Orleans, but the levee breaks caused flooding in 80% of the city — while establishing the full measure of the threat facing Nolan and his newborn. When the power cuts off and backup generators fail, he must repeatedly crank a backup battery that works, at best, for three minutes between crankings, while scavenging for food and supplies through-out the hospital. At one point, his spirits are lifted by the seemingly miraculous ap-pearance of a rescue dog. But then other, far less welcome visitors arrive.

A few supporting players (including Kerry Cahill as a sympathetic nurse) are used fleetingly but effectively, and Gen-

esis Rodriguez makes a strong impression with limited screen time in flashbacks. For the most part, though, “Hours” is practi-cally a one-man show, with Walker alone on-camera for lengthy stretches as Nolan passes time talking to his baby, or him-self, and dashing hither and yon between battery-cranks while on beat-the-clock explorations and supply runs.

The new father pushes himself to the point of exhaustion and beyond in ways that will ring true, and perhaps profoundly unsettle, simpatico parents watching the pic.

Walker gracefully balances the drama on his shoulders. His character’s situa-tion seems all the more dire as Heisserer shrewdly amps up the tension with Benja-min Wallfisch’s propulsive musical score, Jaron Presant’s nimble lensing and Sam Bauer’s sharp editing.

LOS ANGELES — An ingeniously simple setup is cunningly exploited for maximum suspense in “Hours,” a slow-building, consistently engrossing drama set during and immediately after the devastation wrought on New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina. Making a most impressive debut as feature helmer, scripter Eric Heisserer graduates from savvy genre fare (“Final Destination 5”) to more mainstream moviemaking with this intense tale of a father’s desperate efforts to keep his prematurely born daughter alive in a hospital abandoned after power is knocked out by flooding.

Will the Golden Globes nominations bring focus to an awards season that’s so far been blurry? The best-picture con-tenders are many, with early honors be-ing given by various groups to the space odyssey “Gravity,” the slave epic “12 Years a Slave,” the futuristic romance “Her,” the con-artist caper “American Hustle” and the folk tale “Inside Llewyn Davis.”

Also in the mix: the finance world comedy “The Wolf of Wall Street,” the Somali pirate tale “Captain Phillips,” the HIV drama “Dallas Buyers Club,” the father-son road trip “Nebraska,” the making-of “Mary Poppins” story “Sav-ing Mr. Banks,” the Civil rights history “Lee Daniels’ The Butler” and “August: Osage County,” the starry adaptation of Tracy Letts’ prize-winning play.

Perhaps we’ll get more clarity on the season when the nominations for the 71st annual Golden Globes are announced Thursday morning in Beverly Hills, Calif., by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Olivia Wilde, Zoe Saldana and Aziz Ansari will be on hand to read

the results.Since the Globes divide many of

their categories in two, between drama and comedy or musical, there’s a lot of room for all of the above movies — even if some films will have to contort themselves to slide into one category or the other.

This year’s comedy competition could be the strongest field ever for the Globes. Though usually an easier pathway to a nomination, the group potentially includes David O. Russell’s “American Hustle,” Martin Scorsese’s

“The Wolf of Wall Street,” Alexander Payne’s “Nebraska,” Spike Jonze’s “Her” and the Coen brothers’ “Inside Llewyn Davis.”

Bur clarity isn’t always provided by the Golden Globes. The awards and their boozy telecast are known for a desire to attract stars, even if their films aren’t quite up to snuff. (It will be a long time before the HFPA lives down its nomina-tions for Johnny Depp’s “The Tourist.”) This year’s ceremony on Jan. 12 will again be hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

This image released by Fox Searchlight shows Chiwetel Ejiofor, cen-ter, in a scene from “12 Years A Slave.” The Golden Globes nominations will be announced on Thursday, Dec. 12.

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Bali PostTABANNAN - A tragedy afflicted

Feng Yan, 33, a tourist from Sanghai, China. This woman was found dead in one of the pools near Tanah Lot, Bera-ban village, Kediri, Wednesday (Dec 11). The trigger was still mysterious. Allegedly, the victim drowned in the pool while rescuing her daughter, Fengjue Zhiang, 6. Since she was unable to swim, the victim finally died.

Information in the field told if the victim was found floating at 3:00 p.m. Prior to the incident, the victim was accompanying her daughter to swim. Being unable to swim, the victim chose to only sit on the pool-side. Meanwhile, her husband, Zhang Donglai, 35, and his father, Feng Wei Xin, were playing water in the other pool. Somehow, the victim was sud-denly floating in the pool. “He said the victim could not swim. She is likely to help her daughter and drowned,” said one of the hotel employees. As getting no help, the victim allegedly drowned and her body floated.

The victim’s body was then rushed to Tabanan Hospital. Unluckily, the victim’s life could not be helped. The traveler who worked as a nurse ulti-mately passed away. When arriving at hospital, the victim did not breathe. After receiving the report, police officers immediately came down to location, including checking the body. Chief of Kediri Police, Ronny Rian-toko, also came down to hospital. As of Wednesday afternoon, the victim’s body was still commended in Tabanan Hospital.

Due to the language barrier, police was difficult to get information about the victim’s family. From the expla-nation of hotel staff, it was known if the victim checked in with family on Tuesday morning (Dec 10). It was not known how long the victim was found floating in the pool before she was found by hotel staff. When found, the victim was wearing a negligee.

Cries broke when the victim was declared dead. The victim’s husband continued to cry beside the body of his wife. Meanwhile, his daughter was treated in the emergency department (IRD). It was unknown yet how long the victim’s body would be com-mended. (kmb30)

Chronologically, the accident occurred at 12:30 a.m. was still mazy. A resident at the scene told if the collision was triggered by the trailer truck with license plate L 8255 UZ from Gilimanuk direction. The trailer box truck loaded with cargo was speeding. Unluckily, when arriving at the location its brake did not work. Actually, the traffic was jammed due to an overturned truck. The trailer driver, Augustinus, 40, from Surabaya, East Java, could not control the vehicle’s speed and swerved. Firstly, the trailer crashed a Toyota Avanza with license plate DK 1411 YI parked on the roadside. Strong collision caused the rear part of the Avanza to be wrecked. After crashing the Avanza, the trailer swerved to the left. After that, it hit the back of an orange Fuso truck with license plate DK 9422 GH. Then, the trailer swerved to the right. At the same time, a white Fuso truck moved from opposite direction with license plate DK 9433 HB. Trailer truck hit the muzzle and then swerved to the right and

plunged into the ravine. Trailer driver was pinned. He could be evacuated 20 minutes later. His legs were severely injured and rushed to Tabanan Hospital. As a result of the collision, the white Fuso crossed in the middle of the road. Meanwhile, muzzle of the trailer crashed into the river mouth.

When the trailer crashed, the orange Fuso being hit from behind bolted to the front. Fuso muzzle hit a Toyota Avanza with license plate DK 1493 FD in front of it. Due to strong colli-sion, the Avanza driven by IB Rai from Buduk, Mengwi, Badung, flew to break the project barrier on the left side of the road. The car landed in the gap of the flyover project. The front and rear side wrecked. Before plunging, the unlucky Avanza hit a mini bus driven by Made Sujana, 40, from Kerambitan, with li-cense plate DK 9273 GB. Muzzle of the mini bus then crashed a Suzuki Escudo with license plate DK 627 QI. The vehicle sped and crashed a truck muzzle in front of it. Unfortunately, the mysterious truck chose to flee. “Initially, the

trailer truck was speeding and then hitting the creeping vehicle in front of it,” said a witness, Johan, 22, from Jember, East Java. At the time of incident, this electrician was installing cable not far from the location.

As a result of this collision, the flow of two-way traffic was jammed. Such condition was aggravated by heavy rain. The congestion began to resolve when the two Fuso trucks and Suzuki Escudo were evacuated from the middle of the road. Meanwhile, the trailer truck was left at the location because it did not interfere with traffic and so did the Avanza which plunged into the abyss. Surely, the incident became a spectacle of residents.

Police still explored the main causes of the incident. Deputy Chief of Tabanan Police, Dewa Made Adnyana Putra led in person the crime scene investigation. “The officers are still investigating in the field. Thus, the trigger of collision is still uncertain,” he said while accompanied by the Division Head of Operations, AA Rai Laba. (kmb30)

Bali PostDENPASAR - Permissibility

for the establishment of spiritual tourist accommodation in the buf-fer zone and utilization zone of the sanctum area of Sad Khayan-gan Temple of type II and III in the article of the Zonation Regu-lation Directive (APZ) regulation draft was criticized by the mem-ber of APZ Special Committee of the Bali House. Crucial articles in the regulation draft were asked to be more specifically discussed, and to remove the articles allow-ing the tourist accommodation. “In the APZ Regulation Draft, we ask there is no tourist accom-modation in the sanctum area. In my personal opinion, the article permitting the tourist accommo-dation must be removed,” said a member of APZ Special Com-mittee, Tjokorda Gde Ngurah, Wednesday (Dec 11).

He asserted that bhisama or stipulation on the temple sanctity of the Hindu Dharma Council of Indonesia (PHDI) should become the reference in preparing the regulation draft where there had been found tourist accommoda-tion development in the sacred area. In the future, it should be prohibited to maintain the temple

sanctity. “Do not let another tourist accommodation develop-ment happen in the sacred area. Though the articles of the APZ Regulation Draft only allow the spiritual tourist accommodation, it can trigger the development of other accommodation. Please also be explained the definition of spiritual tourist accommodation and how many units are allowed as the article is still unclear. We worry that we want to protect the sacred area, but at the same time we allow the accommodation development,” he said.

This former Regent of Klung-kung added that spirit of the APZ Regulation Draft was to keep the sacred area and avoid any unfavorable things that could even contaminate the sacred area. “This APZ Regulation Draft is prepared by the executive and we just discuss it with the Spe-cial Committee. So, the Special Committee should intensively discuss first the crucial articles. Longer discussion does not mat-ter rather than we are excessive and there are chapters having not been discussed. Otherwise, we can be blamed by the people of Bali. Similarly, do not let it bring along any interest of investors,”

he said.In addressing the crucial ar-

ticles in this Regulation Draft, the APZ Special Committee and the executive should ask for the opin-ion of the PHDI for preventive measures so the accommodation development in the sacred area would not be repeated again. “We see the sacred area of Besakih Temple is poorly managed. Then, in the south of the Penataran Ped Temple in Nusa Penida, right 50 meters away from the temple, sits a tourist accommodation though it totally reaches 6 rooms. So, in the future we have to anticipate in order the sacred area will not be crowded by accommodation,” said the Golkar politician.

Separately, Chairman of the Sabha Walaka of the Central PHDI, Putu Wirata Dwikora, said that in principle the PHDI with the customary village general as-sembly (MUDP) asked to refer to the bhisama on the temple sanctity and could it not be tampered again in the preparation of the Regula-tion Draft. Tri Wana concept as set forth in Regional Regulation No.16/2009 about the Bali Provin-cial Spatial Plan (RTRWP) should also be upheld. In the future, in the Tri Wana or sanctum area there

should be no additional permit as the existing hotels, cafes, nightclubs, karaoke, spa, massage parlors and the like. The permitted accommodations were only ash-ram where the overnight travelers were those looking for tranquility through meditation and prayer and it could also include a religious or spiritual tourism. Technical and quantitative matters were expected from the inputs by the PHDI that would be formulated through meetings, so it would be obtained a more comprehensive input. Presentation made by the executive and expert team in the meeting of the Bali House, MUDP and PHDI some time ago should indeed be improved because it was not final and there remained some offers of idea.

“Because it involves principle matters, the Regulation Draft still needs a lot of inputs. Moreover, the joint meeting some time ago only discussed about the article 36 through article 47 considered cru-cial. Other articles have not been discussed and it should involve us as a whole,” he concluded.

As reported previously (BP/Dec 11), the APZ Special Com-mittee of the Bali House consid-ered there were still a number of

crucial articles in the regulation draft especially article 36 through article 47 setting forth about the sacred area and sanctum area. The articles also specifically regulated the zonation of sacred area what could be built, built with certain conditions and what to be pro-hibited.

For example, there was article mentioning if spiritual tourist ac-commodation development was allowed in the buffer zone and utilization zone in the sacred area of the Sad Khayangan Temple of type II and type III with a maxi-mum of 25 rooms per unit. How-ever, it was not clearly and firmly regulated in a restriction zone how many units of spiritual tourist ac-commodation could be built.

“We still find a lot of crucial articles and materials in the regu-lation draft. Therefore, we ask them to be discussed more com-prehensively. Likewise, do not be forced to approve this regulation draft in this December and there should be no interests of particu-lar party,” said a member of the APZ Special Committee dou-bling as Chairman of Commis-sion III of the Bali House, Gusti Made Suryanta Putra, Tuesday (Dec 10). (kmb29)

It was conveyed by Spokesper-son of Bali Police, Hariadi, Wednes-day (Dec 11). He said that before Christmas and New Year his party had been intensifying the operation of creating condition. The target would include nightclubs, drug traf-ficking, weapons and firearms, theft and other actions. “It’s important to take precautions,” he told reporters last Wednesday.

“We have done the operation of creating condition. Other than Bali Police and the staff, the Na-tional Narcotics Agency (BNN) also aggressively carried out the operation,” he said. In addition, two thirds of Bali Police personnel would be placed at several critical

points such as nightclubs, public places and churches. “The number of personnel at every point will be adjusted. We’ll see next,” said Hariadi.

When asked about the security at entrances into Bali, this former Director of Traffic Affairs of the Central Sulawesi Police said they would also be strictly guarded. The entrances (Gilimanuk, Padangbai and Benoa Harbor including tradi-tional ports and Ngurah Rai Airport) would be guarded by a number of personnel. Later, the officers would check the luggage of passengers to detect whether they carried explo-sives and other suspicious materi-als. (kmb21)

Chanel turned one of the halls at Fair Park, Dallas’ Art Deco exhibition venue, into a barn for the night, complete with a hay-scattered runway. Models in Western-style hats and boots wore outfits adorned with fringe, leather and feathers. The final model was dressed in an all-white ensemble that included fringed pants and a floor-grazing feather headdress.

Lagerfeld said after the show that he was inspired by “the idea of the old Texas, even before the Civil War.” He noted that his cowboys were “not typical cowboys, they are transposed, very sophisticated.” Many of the outfits included Native Ameri-can-inspired prints, with most of the models wearing a single feather in their hair. Denim also made frequent appearances on the runway.

For more than a decade, La-gerfeld has picked a city linked to the fashion house for the theme of the show staged each Decem-ber to highlight the work of its artisans.

Chanel founder Gabriel le “Coco” Chanel visited in Dallas in 1957 at the invitation of Stanley Marcus, head of Neiman Marcus, the Dallas-based luxury retailer founded by his family. She was given a warm welcome in the city — picked up at the airport in a white Rolls-Royce and feted at a Western-themed party complete with a catwalk featuring cows.

Tuesday evening’s festivities began with the premiere of a 20-minute film written and di-rected by Lagerfeld titled, “The Return,” that retraced the steps of Coco Chanel as she reopened her Paris couture house in 1954 after shuttering it as Europe entered World War II. The film was screened in an exhibition hall that had been transformed into a drive-in movie theater. Dozens of classic cars faced four screens. Lagerfeld, Vogue editor Anna Wintour and former Vogue editor-at-large Andre Leon Tal-ley climbed into a black Cadillac convertible to take in the film.

After the runway show, guests partied in a recreation of a honky-

tonk bar. Classic country music played while the well-heeled guests — including model Lau-ren Hutton and actresses Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning — walked on a floor strewn with peanut shells. There was even a mechanical bull. The couture house’s return in 1954 after 15 years wasn’t well-received by the French press, but was embraced by the Americans.

During Coco Chanel’s Sep-tember 1957 trip to Dallas, she was given the Neiman Marcus Award for Distinguished Service in the Field of Fashion. The next month, the department store, celebrating its 50th anniversary, launched the Fortnight celebra-tions, which became famous for bringing festivities and offerings inspired by a certain country to the city. The title that year was “France Comes to Texas.”

PARIS — Viktor&Rolf can fi-nally boast a pied-a-terre in Paris. Though their playful creations have graced Paris Fashion Week’s catwalks for years, surprisingly enough, the Dutch design duo have never had a boutique in their home from home, the City of Light. That is, until now.

“Paris is our fashion home, it’s our spiritual home,” said Viktor Horsting from the sprawl-ing basement floors of the all-gray space that opened this week. “That’s why this is so great. It’s our 20th anniversary this year. And opening this store is our way to mark this in a way to look forward, not back.” The store is certainly an impressive birthday present — about 7,000 square feet (650 square meters) of shop space over two floors on the prestigious rue Saint-Honore.

“Such a visible spot was for us the most important for our brand, especially in Paris,” added Horsting. The interior, described as “ghost architecture,” is made up of curved architectural steel covered in a tactile, effacing soft

gray felt. In a nice contradiction, it looks squishy, but is hard to the touch.

“We said to the architects we want a shop that’s invisible,” said Horsting. “When you enter you don’t expect the huge space that opens up suddenly. It’s a surprise.”

The color gray was chosen to celebrate their history and sym-bolizes two decades since the designers founded their Amster-dam-based fashion house. Their first collection back in 1993 was also all-gray.

Looking back and taking cre-ative stock might be a good idea for the designers, Horsting and his partner Rolf Snoeren, whose year was marked by a couple of ready-to-wear collections that had a rather lukewarm reception and were criticized by some for being unwilling to take creative risks.

The return to the couture stage, in July, after a 13-year hiatus, with a minimalist and medita-tive all-black collection was seen a welcome move that restored some of the artistic credibility the once-avant-garde designers have recently somewhat lost.

“We will not allow Italy to sink again,” Letta told lawmakers, prom-ising to “fight with everything I have to avoid our country being thrown back into chaos just as it is begin-ning to lift itself up again”. “Today we are drawing a clear line. On this side are those who love Europe... knowing that without the European Union we would plunge into the Middle Ages.

“On that side are those who want to block Europe,” he said in a thinly-veiled reference to Berlusconi and the anti-establishment firebrand politician Beppe Grillo.

Letta won the vote in the lower house handily with 379 in favour and 212 against. He then won the vote more narrowly in the upper house, obtaining 173 votes, or 22 more than required for an absolute majority. Letta admitted that instability had “weakened” his government but voiced hope that the confidence vote would give his coalition a stronger mandate to govern and press ahead with much-needed reforms.

He said he would impose further cuts on Italy’s overweight bureau-cratic machine and aim for gross domestic product (GDP) growth of 1.0 percent in 2014 and 2.0 percent in 2015, while also slashing debt. “Italy will shake off the image of an unstable, Baroque country that can never decide anything,” said Letta, who came to power in April follow-ing a two-month stalemate after an inconclusive general election.

Letta also promised to reduce the number of parliamentarians and end public subsidies to political parties -- both reforms that have long been mooted in Italy, including by Letta, but never carried out.

The vote was called after the scandal-tainted Berlusconi’s party quit the ruling coalition and he was ejected from parliament over a tax fraud conviction. Berlusconi’s de-parture would have brought down the government but a group of the playboy politician’s former prote-ges broke away and stayed in the cabinet.

In a sign of the social tensions in Italy, there have been sometimes violent rallies led by an anti-austerity movement known as the “Forconi” (Pitchforks) who held a small protest

in Rome on Wednesday. Members of the Fiom metalworkers’ union also took to the streets of the Italian capital to demand more help from the government to save jobs. Letta’s

cabinet won some breathing space this week with the long-awaited news that the economy has stopped contracting and an end to recession was imminent.

Rome - Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta on Wednesday won a parliamentary confidence vote triggered by the fall of Silvio Berlusconi, promising to push through a pro-European reform agenda and fight populism. Letta vowed to bring political stability and economic growth to a country on the point of exiting its longest post-war recession, con-demning “chaos” after anti-austerity protests this week across Italy.

KIEV, Ukraine — Ukrainian officials were heading Thursday to Brussels for talks with the Eu-ropean Union as the bloc’s foreign

policy chief said the country’s em-battled president “intends to sign” a trade and cooperation agreement he rejected last month. Dem-onstrators angry over President Viktor Yanukovych’s decision to

shelve the long-anticipated agree-ment will be watching the meeting closely, worried that the leader could instead sign an agreement to join a Russia-led customs union when he and Russian President Vladimir Putin meet next week.

Yanukovych appears to be in a tough corner. As protesters furious over his decision to turn away from the EU clog the center of Kiev, he appears to be leaving his options open for the best deal he can get from his economi-cally troubled country’s powerful suitors.

Russia has put heavy pres-sure on Ukraine to join its bloc, which also includes Belarus and Kazakhstan. Opponents say the bloc effectively tries to recreate the Soviet Union.

Yanukovych has said he is still open to the EU association agree-ment if terms can be worked out that provide more aid to Ukraine, which is concerned about the im-pact of losing trade with Russia. The talks between the EU and

the Ukrainian delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister Serhiy Arbuzov could bring clarity on whether such aid is possible.

The Kiev protests swelled to hundreds of thousands after police violently broke up two early rallies. Demonstrators are riding a wave of high morale after riot police stood down from two confrontations with protest-ers on Wednesday. Squadrons of helmeted police deployed at the protesters’ tent camp in Indepen-dence Square and at the protester-occupied city hall, but left hours later in the face of demonstrator defiance.

Protesters are reinforcing their positions in Kiev’s center, erect-ing sizeable new barricades across streets leading to Independence Square. EU foreign policy head Catherine Ashton, who talked with Yanukovych and opposition figures in Kiev this week, said it was clear that the short-term economic and financial issues Ukraine faces can be alleviated by

signing the deal, which she said would bring in fresh investment from EU nations.

“Look, Yanukovych made it clear to me that he intends to sign the association agreement,” Ash-ton said on arrival for a meeting in Brussels early Thursday after her visit to Kiev.

Ashton said Ukraine’s econom-ic problems “can be addressed by the support that not only comes from the EU institutions, but actually by showing that he has a serious economic plan in signing the association agreement.” The signature on the EU association agreement “will help to bring in the kind of investment that he needs,” she said.

Ukrainians in the east look more favorably on closer ties with their giant neighbor. Yanukovych, who is seeking a bailout loan from the International Monetary Fund to keep Ukraine from going bank-rupt, is sensitive to the economic disruption that trade disputes with Russia can cause.

Bali PostSEMARAPURA - Ahead of the

inauguration of the elected regent and deputy regent, Nyoman Suwirta and Made Kasta, the vandalism is increas-ingly rife in the Ida I Dewa Agung Istri Kanya Cultural Hall. Actually, the inauguration of Suwirta - Kasta will be organized in the Cultural Hall. Action of such irresponsible residents can tarnish the inauguration. Moreover, it will be attended by approximately 5,000 invitees from various groups, ranging from the officials to political figures.

From outside, the Cultural Hall looks vile and gives impression of being poorly maintained. Unlike the name suggests, the Cultural Hall, it looks not-cultured as the center of the art and cultural performance, let alone the activities like the inauguration of the regent and deputy regent. From the outside can be seen that every wall is filled with the acts of vandalism or destructive activity. As a result, it makes the cultural hall look dirty. “It is unworthy to invite many officials with the Cultural Hall in such condi-tion,” said a resident while seeing the inauguration preparation that was said to be organized modestly.

Supporting facilities of the Cultural Hall such as bathrooms and dressing rooms behind the stage also looked dirty. So, apparently it was not worthy to be made the venue for the regent and deputy regent inauguration. Although it still looked dirty from outside, a number of improvements in the Cul-tural Hall had been done. Several workers looked busy maintaining it in

recent days by replacing the damaged parts. Apparently, the Cultural Hall was given a regular cleanup since No-vember 13, with a budget worth IDR 198.36 million.

As planned, the regular maintenance would be done during the 30 calendar days by the project contractor CV Hu-tama Jaya. Thus, prior to the inaugura-tion on December 16, the Cultural Hall could have looked more organized. In addition, a number of municipal police (Satpol PP) personnel were alerted all day, so the Cultural Hall would not be destroyed again by unscrupulous people frequently harmed the facili-ties. All this time, several residents often inadvertently damaged the Cul-tural Hall. There were also a number of youths who used the location for cycling event to skateboard, instead of the arts and cultural activities.

Previously, Spokesperson of Klung-kung government, Wayan Parna, said that ahead of the inauguration of the re-gent and deputy regent of Klungkung, various preparations had been made by the committee. As planned, the inauguration would take place in the Ida I Dewa Agung Istri Kanya Cultural Hall, Klungkung. In the inauguration, there would be 4,400 personal invitees of the regent/deputy regent and 935 official invitees. The inauguration would be made around 09:00 a.m. As for consumption, it would be specially prepared the Jinggo Rice, unlike the usual one in the form of rice box. Reportedly, it was the demand of the elected regent wishing to make the inauguration run modestly so that it could reduce the cost. (kmb31)

The hope to make the Titab Reservoir a tourist attraction is very reasonable. Aside from offering beautiful scenery, the reservoir is also planned to be equipped with recreational facilities such as fishing spots. To make the Titab Reservoir an attraction does require a careful planning. On the one hand, the reservoir may not lose its main function, and on the other hand, the hope to make the reservoir a place of recreation can also be met.

About a month ago, the pro-cess of compensation payment for the land of Titab Reservoir could have been settled. Then, it just needed to continue build-ing the reservoir in accordance with the main objective as well as to conform to people’s

expectation. As planned, the reservoir will be built on the land area of 138 hectares. From such acreage, 5 hectares are al-located for the reservoir body, 10 hectares for spillway and other buildings, 64 hectares for inundation and 69 hectares for green belt.

Regent of Buleleng, Putu Agus Suradnyana, when mak-ing a visit to the reservoir proj-ect, Wednesday (Dec 11), stated the Titab Reservoir would be very easy to be transformed into a tourist attraction. As first step, local government should stipulate the building order and environmental plan (RTBL) in favor of the reservoir conservation area. One of them was by preservation of green areas overgrown by trees and

it should be well maintained. “Take care of the tree preserva-tion as a source of water. Most importantly, there should be no major investment utilizing the watershed area,” he said.

Specifically to support the region in order th at it could be used as a tourist attraction, the regent offered the making of some center points in the region above the reservoir. From the center points, travelers could see beautiful scenery such as terraced rice fields and reser-voir surrounding by verdant trees. “When it has run, we will make the center points. With such good views, a lot of travelers will get interested in seeing the landscape,” he said. (kmb15)

Bali PostAMLAPURA - Residents of Subagan,

Karangasem, were shocked again on Wednesday (Dec 11). A body of youth, the victim I Nyoman Suartama, 18, was found floating in the River Pedih, Sub-agan village, Karangasem.

Evacuation of the body was carried out by dozens of police officers from Karan-gasem Selective Police led by Chief Ida Bagus Mertayasa with the assistance of residents. The body was evacuated from the river of about 15 meters deep.

Chief Mertayasa said the victim was identified from his identity card that he was a resident from Darma Winangun hamlet, Tianyar Timur, Kubu, as a victim of traffic accident. It was indicated by the broken hauili tree on the cliff top at the edge of the river or broken barrier of the bridge.

Allegedly, the victim riding the Honda Supra motorcycle with license plate DK 5024 AK plunged into the river when he was moving on the direction from Kubu to Denpasar. The victim plunged from the left

side of the bridge from east direction. The victim plunged to the bottom of the stony river and the water was quite deep among the stones of the river. From observation, the victim suffered severe injuries to his head and the wound was bleeding.

The discovery of the body instantly caused commotion to the residents of Subagan. Hundreds of residents came down to location of the discovery of the body. Due to many people, police were busy directing the traffic on the road of Subagan to Perasi village denoting the road section of Amlapura-Denpasar. Location of the body discovery was about 500 meters from child graveyard of Subagan, denoting the location of the dead victim I Gede Sudiarta, 48. Sudiarta was killed by the kris dagger as stabbed by his son during the ritual procession of animating the rangda effigy on Monday midnight (Dec 2). Residents came to commotion because after the procession case of the Rangda effigy, the Subagan people believed there would be further casualties. (013)

Abbott acted after US-based Gen-eral Motors on Wednesday announced its Holden offshoot will cease manufactur-ing in Australia by 2017 after 65 years, prompting Toyota to warn it too was in peril as unions said the car industry was finished.

With Mitsubishi closing its Adelaide plant five years ago and Ford halting vehicle production at its unprofitable Australian operations in 2016, Toyota will be the only company left making cars in the country.

Abbott said he had spoken to Toyota’s Australian boss Max Yasuda.

“Obviously the government will be talking to Toyota,” he told Channel Nine television. “We want Toyota to continue.

“They are in a slightly different position to Holden.

“Much more of their local production has been for export. Toyota locally have been much more integrated into the global operations of the company, it seems, than with Holden.”

Holden’s decision to move to a national sales company, costing 2,900 jobs, was

blamed on the sustained strength of the Australian dollar, high production costs and a small and competitive domestic market -- similar to the reasons given by Ford.

“Holden have been sending signals for some time that there were difficulties, and look, this is tragic, it really is,” Abbott said. “This is the last thing anyone wants.”

“We want to be a country that makes things and we want to keep the motor industry in this country, but as the head of Holden said yesterday, they have been hit by a perfect storm: a high dollar, high costs and small markets.”

Unions have warned of a multi-billion-dollar hole in the economy and the loss of up to 50,000 automotive industry-related jobs if car manufacturing in Australia ends altogether.

Because car parts and components were manufactured nationwide there would no corner of Australia untouched by Holden’s decision, said opposition finance spokes-man Chris Bowen.

“The loss in tax revenue, the unemploy-ment payments right across the board, will

see Australian government revenues hit, and potentially hit hard,” he told report-ers.

Toyota said on Wednesday that Hold-en’s decision would place “unprecedented pressure on the local supplier network and our ability to build cars in Australia.”

“We will now work with our suppliers, key stakeholders and the government to determine our next steps and whether we can continue operating as the sole vehicle manufacturer in Australia,” it said.

Toyota employs around 4,200 people in Australia with its main factory in Mel-bourne.

Victoria Premier Denis Napthine was to meet Abbott on Thursday and said his state would need “a substantial amount of money” to help Holden workers retrain and to create new jobs.

He told reporters he was considering giving Toyota state funding that had been earmarked for Holden, and urged Abbott to do the same.

“I certainly will be pushing the federal government for cooperative helpful discus-sions with Toyota,” Napthine said.

STRASBOURG - EU nations agreed new rules for bank bailouts or “bail-ins” late Wednes-day, to save taxpayers from paying for the rescue of ailing financial institutions, an official said.

“Big step tonight,” EU Commissioner Michel Barnier wrote on Twitter. “Taxpayers (are) no longer in front line” to pay for banks’ mistakes, he added.

“Banks will have to put money aside for rainy days. We are learning lessons of crisis,” he said after the agreement was reached by representa-tives of the European Parliament, the European Council -- the EU’s executive arm -- and the 28 member states.

The aim is to make European banks stronger so that they “can lend to the real economy,” he added.

“This is a fundamental step towards the completion of the Banking Union,” Barnier said in a separate statement.

The new system will take effect from 2016.The “bail-in” will primarily require important

hits to be taken by shareholders and bond hold-ers of a financial institution in trouble.

Small depositors will be explicitly excluded from incurring any costs but depositors with more than 100,000 euros ($137,000) could be affected, though lastly under a pre-defined hierarchy, the European parliament said in a statement.

For each member state a fund will be estab-lished which will come to the aid of banks in or-der to help them recover or to wind them down.

These funds will be built up through bank con-tributions and by 2025 should reach the level of one percent of the covered deposits of the banks in that country.

All banks will have to contribute but those contributions will be bigger for the banks that take the bigger risks, said Barnier.

However the deal does not exclude the possi-bility of public money being used “in exceptional circumstances,” the parliamentary statement said.

Welcoming the deal, Gunnar Hoekmark, who steered the legislation through the European parliament, said: “We now have a strong bail-in system which sends a clear message that bank shareholders and creditors will be the ones to bear the losses on rainy days, not taxpayers.”

The deal must still be finalised on a technical level and will then need official approval by the EU member states and parliament.

The new directive will eventually dovetail with the EU’s “Banking Union”, which is cur-rently being hammered out but will only apply to countries that use the common euro currency and others that choose to participate.

All countries now accept the principle that if banks get into difficulty, then it will not be the taxpayer but investors and creditors that bear the costs. But differences remain as to how to put that into practice.

SEMARAPURA - Penataran Pande Kuri Batu Temple is located at Jelantik Kuri Batu, Tojan village, Klungkung. This temple is estimated to have existed since 1422 AD in accordance with the information of the chronographic note in the shape of heads, horses, arms and legs located on the top of the temple entrance gates.

This temple retains historical objects that are still maintained by the temple supporting devotees or pengempon. They generate a unique story in the history of Klungkung. The Penataran Pande Kuri Batu stands on an area of about 700 square meters, exactly on the edge of the Gelgel-Klungkung road section. The temple has eleven shrines.

From outside, it looks not much different from the temples in general in Bali. But when Bali Post explored each component of the temple and based on the stories of senior figures of the temple, it was then revealed the history and uniqueness of the temple belonging to a large family of pande or ironsmith clan in Bali. One of the se-nior figures of the temple, Wayan Togig, told the history on the temple was contained in the Purana Raja Sesana where the temple was built by Mpu Ngurah Lelumbang with his son Sire Lurah Tusan Kepandean. The temple anniversary was celebrated every Tumpek Landep, falling on Saturday (Aug 24).

Supporting devotees from throughout Bali looked to come for worshipping in the Penataran Pande Kuri Batu where the temple anniversary took place for two days. “Devotees from Klungkung are about 60 families, while the rest from outside Klungkung was about 350 registered families,” he said.

Ornaments of all the shrines in the Penataran Pande Kuri Batu looked old and so did the buildings. However, some shrines had been renovated, but typical Balinese carvings on the shrine remained to be preserved. The Pe-nataran Pande Kuri Batu has its own uniqueness namely the door leaf made from stone.

Kori Batu or stone gate with the length of about two meters and the width of about 40 centimeters was in-stalled in the temple entrance. It also had a relief in the form of the painting of Lord Brahma and Lord Shiva. Due to the existence of such stone gates the temple was then named the Penataran Pande Kuri Batu. In the pande clan chronicles written by Pande Made Purnajiwa, said Togig, was also mentioned because the temple had frames and doors made from stone. On that account, it was then called Penataran Pande Kuri Batu or Sila Dwara. (kmb)

Information at Mendoyo Police station, Wednesday (Dec 11), men-tioned if police initially received information from the public on the occurrence of sea sand dredg-ing along the coast. Action of the culprits actually had often been committed, but they were never deterrent. Finally, police made an investigation around 11:00 p.m. near the Rambutsiwi Temple and a police team immediately raided the action involving a number of residents. Other the seven culprits, police also found a number of tools used to

transport the sand such as yellow four-wheeled truck with license plate DK 8143 JW and two Carry pickup trucks respectively with license plate DK 9893 WM and DK 9818 WA.

After police stopped their action using simple mining tools, all the culprits were asked to gather. Police then contacted the Chief of Yehem-bang customary village. Afterward, the culprits were identified and secured by the officers. The culprits included Wayan Widarta, a resident of Kaleran hamlet, Yehembang, as the owner of the Carry pickup

truck; I Nyoman Adnyana Putra, 28, a resident Baler Baleagung, the owner of four-wheeled truck from Yehembang; and I Nyoman Widiasa from Pasar hamlet, Yehembang, as the owner of another Carry pickup truck. Four other workers loading the sea sand were Putu Artawa, 34, Ketut Nundra, 52, Nyoman Tarma, 45, and I Made Darmika, 37, and they were all residents of Pasar hamlet, Yehembang. One of them was an officer of local customary village. Police handed over the case to chief of local customary village

a few minutes later. On Wednesday, police still asked

all the culprits to come to po-lice station to be given guidance. Chief of Mendoyo Police, Wayan Sinaryasa, through the Chief of Criminal Detective, Nyoman Da-nia, with permission from the Chief of Jembrana Police, confirmed the raid. The culprits had come to meet police’s summon for a coaching. Further handling was delivered to customary village.

On the other hand, Chief of Ye-hembang customary village, Gede Ngurah Aryana, confirmed the raid by police and some of the culprits were his residents. Aryana then provided guidance and reprimand against the customary residents so as not to repeat their action. Moreover, the action was carried

Although the theft occurred at Yehembang Kangin, according him, the culprits were residents of Yehembang. On that account, the customary village considered it nec-essary to reprimand them. After be-ing given a reprimand, the culprits and evidence were released.

Previously, they were asked to unload the sea sand they had loaded onto the vehicles. The vil-lage also agreed to close the road access usually used for vehicles to come to the beach. (kmb26)

Indonesia’s Nofrisal, left, returns a shot from Myanmar’s Thant Zin Oo during the men’s sepak takraw match at the South East Asian Games in Naypyitaw, Myanmar, Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013.

“Because of the support and hard work of all stake holders involved in the WTO conference, we have managed to reach an agreement that has never been achieved during the past 18 years,” the Minister stated on Thursday.

He noted that following an 18-year long deadlock, Indonesia had gathered the courage to host the con-ference in Bali this year to encourage poor and developing countries to find the right formula that would benefit all countries.

Gita pointed out that WTO meet-ings held so far had been marked by failure and even violence because the

developed countries had failed to ac-commodate the interests of the poor and developing nations.

“A single undertaking is the prin-ciple of WTO. Thus, if a country does not agree, then it can be vetoed, but it is not an easy thing to strike an agree-ment among 160 member countries,” the Minister pointed out.

He added that the long negotia-tions during the ninth WTO minis-terial conference, which ended on Dec. 6, had yielded the Bali Package, which includes agreements related to Trade Facilitation, Agriculture and significant provisions for Least Developed Countries.

AntaraJAKARTA - The governments of

Indonesia and the Netherlands have reached an agreement on the five islands construction project near the Tanjung Perak Port, Surabaya (East Java), for building the proposed industrial area.

“The estimated cost of the project is slated to be 20 million euros,” the First Secretary of Information and Social Culture Affairs at the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in The Hague Danang Waskito declared here on Thursday.

He stated that the agreement was reached between PT Pelindo III of the Indonesia Port Corporations and a Dutch construction company, Van Oord.

The agreement was signed during Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte¿s visit during November 19-22, 2013. He was accompanied by the Minister

for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation Lilianne Ploumen and the Minister of Agriculture Sharon Djiksma.

“The economic cooperation be-tween Indonesia and the Netherlands is quite strong, especially in the field of water management, science and health, food and agriculture, horticulture, and logistics,” Danang claimed.

Apart from the construction of five islands in Surabaya, the two coun-tries also agreed on charting out the National Capital Integrated Coastal Development master plan.

“This project aims to address flooding and support sustainable development in Jakarta,” Danang remarked, adding that the master plan was chalked out by Indonesian and Dutch experts.

During the prime ministerial visit, the Joint Declaration On Comprehen-

sive Partnership was signed between the governments of Indonesia and the Netherlands. In addition, an agree-ment on Triangular Cooperation was signed by the Minister of Foreign Trade and Development Coopera-tion of the Netherlands and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was also signed in the field of fisheries and aquaculture by the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture of the Netherlands and the Minister of Marine and Fisheries of the Republic of Indonesia.

“From these visits, we can see a new round of relationship that lays emphasis on a long-term vision that involves Indonesia and the Neth-erlands jointly moving forward to explore an array of opportunities for cooperation in the fields of economy, politics, and culture,” Danang said.

JAKARTA - Hotel giant Accor said Wednesday it plans to open more than 200 hotels in the Asia-Pacific in the coming years, high-lighting continued confidence in the region despite slowing growth in key markets.

A total of 227 hotels should open “in the next three to four years”, meaning more than 49,000 extra rooms, Michael Issenberg, Asia-Pacific chief operating officer for the French group, told AFP.

“It’s the fastest growing part of the world”, he added during an interview in Jakarta.

Accor is the top hotel group in Asia-Pacific with 560 hotels and 107,000 rooms.

China, the group’s top market in the region with 135 hotels cur-rently, will have the bulk of the new developments with 90 hotels, he said.

Indonesia, Southeast Asia’s biggest economy, is the group’s second-fastest growing market in the region and 71 of the new ho-tels are planned for the sprawling archipelago.

Accor, the sixth biggest hotel

group in the world with brands including Novotel, Sofitel and Pullman, already has 73 hotels in Indonesia.

Issenberg downplayed fears slowing growth in China, the world’s second-biggest economy, could affect Accor’s plans.

China’s economic growth has slowed in recent years but still came in at a strong 7.8 percent on year in the July-September quarter.

“In China, there’s been a bit of an oversupply but that will change. The next couple of years will be challenging but in the medium term, we think we’ll be OK,” he said.

He also expressed confidence in the Indonesian market despite ex-pectations economic growth will come in below six percent in 2013 for the first time in four years.

“After China, the biggest market for development is Indonesia. The hotel market in Indonesia has a very, very bright future,” he said.

Gerard Guillouet, senior vice president for Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore, added Accor was on track to have 100 hotels in In-donesia by 2015.

Don’t underestimate WTO Conference’s results

JAKARTA - Trade Minister Gita Wirjawan has asked all parties involved to refrain from being hasty in underestimat-ing the results of the ninth World Trade Organization (WTO) conference in Bali, urging them to allow the outcome to energize the Indonesian state and nation in the due course of time.

But most of all, opponents say, he has been busy running Thailand from afar, pressing to return to power through schemes that have widened the country’s already dangerous political rifts and led to bloodshed on the streets.

His latest attempt to erase a 2008 corruption conviction and come home a free man was a gross miscalculation, igniting massive demonstrations in Bangkok against his sister, Prime Minister Ying-luck Shinawatra. His return now seems unlikely, but analysts say his wealth, powerful allies and a devoted following among the rural masses mean he will continue to exert significant influence.

And the 64-year-old Thaksin will probably remain the most divisive figure in modern Thai history, demonized by the middle class and urban elites as a cocky, corrupt upstart who challenged the traditional power structure, includ-ing the monarchy, and adored as a near-saint by have-nots for provid-ing them with handouts and a sense of empowerment.

“He bought everything in this country. He would even buy your soul,” businesswoman Chinda

Dhamawong said as she marched down a Bangkok avenue with thou-sands screaming, “Thaksin out!”

Meanwhile, in Thaksin’s prime stronghold, the impoverished north-east, residents of Kambon village credit him for bringing many ben-efits: electricity, cheap loans, virtu-ally free medical care, good prices for their rice. “All this is because of Thaksin. This is why rural people want him back — why I want him back,” said 61-year-old Thongchan Potaklang.

“It’s always going to be about Thaksin in Thailand, but increas-ingly about more than Thaksin,” says Thitinan Pongsudhirak, a political scientist at Bangkok’s Chulalongkorn University.

A leading opposition lawmaker, Suthep Thaugsuban, resigned from Parliament to lead the massive protests. He wants to replace Yin-gluck with an unelected “people’s council” that he says would remake Thailand’s government to expunge Thaksin’s influence. At least five people have been killed and nearly 300 injured since the demonstra-tions began last month, and pro-testers have temporarily occupied government ministries.

The self-exiled, globe-trotting Thaksin, based in a luxurious mansion in Dubai, has remained largely silent during the crisis. In a recent post on his Facebook page, Thaksin denied often-repeated claims that he has been disloyal to the royal family, headed by much-revered but ailing King Bhumibol Adulyadej. “Thai politics is played out with cruelty and in cold blood. Please don’t be cruel to me,” Thak-sin wrote. Throughout his career, Thaksin has been a tenacious and sometimes ruthless fighter.

After obtaining a doctorate in criminal justice at Sam Houston State University in Texas, and a stint on the police force, the de-scendant of Chinese immigrants used his connections to obtain a monopoly for what became the country’s most successful mobile phone company.

In 2001, after a landslide victory, he became the first prime minister in Thailand’s history to lead an elected government through a full term in office. Over the next five years, the economy boomed and so did the Shinawatra’s family fortune, allegedly through massive corruption.

Johannesburg - The sign language interpreter at Nelson Mandela’s funeral has said a schizophrenic episode was to blame for accusations that he was an imposter who gesticulated nonsense during the entire service. Thamsanqa Jantjie was branded as a scurrilous fake after mem-bers of South Africa’s deaf community said his signing at Tuesday’s memorial ceremony had amounted to nothing more than “flapping his arms around.”

In an interview Thursday with the Johannesburg daily, The Star, Jantjie put his behaviour down to a sudden attack of schizophrenia, for which he takes medication. He told the newspaper that he lost concen-tration, started hearing voices and hallucinating. “There was nothing I could do. I was alone in a very dangerous situation,” he said.

“I tried to control myself and not show the world what was going on. I am very sorry. It’s the situation I found myself in,” he added. Jantjie’s efforts at the memorial service, during which he translated eulogies by US President Barack Obama among others, triggered outrage in the deaf community and prompted a government investigation.

Cara Loening, director of Sign Language Education and Develop-ment in Cape Town, labelled him a “complete fraud” whose signing looked like someone “trying to swat a few flies away from his face and his head”.

Asked why he didn’t just leave the stage, Jantjie said that, given the historic importance of the event, he felt compelled to stay even though he could not hear or concentrate properly. “Life is unfair. This illness is unfair,” he said. “Anyone who doesn’t understand this illness will think that I’m just making this up,” he added.

Addis Ababa - Uganda troops have captured 19 Lord’s Resistance Army rebels in Central African Republic (CAR), the African Union said, a sizeable victory in the hunt for the elusive jungle insurgents. The Ugandan army is leading a US-backed African Union force tasked with capturing the LRA’s leaders, several of whom are wanted for war crimes by the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

The “19 members of the LRA belonging to the group commanded by Lieutenant-Colonel Obur Nyeko, alias Okuti, defected and reported to a detachment of the Ugandan contingent,” on December 6, the AU said in a statement released late Tuesday. The fighters surrendered with their guns and ammunition, it added.

Last month the United Nations Security Council expressed concern that chaos in CAR could disrupt the hunt for LRA rebel chief Joseph Kony, who is blamed for 100,000 deaths in a two-decade rampage through the region.

Kony, who launched a rebellion in Uganda two decades ago, is wanted by the International Criminal Court along with fellow top commanders on war crimes and crimes against humanity charges including murder, sexual slavery and using child soldiers.

Since August 2013, AU troops have “rescued a number of civilian abductees, destroyed several LRA camps in CAR and in Democratic Republic of Congo, disrupted the group’s logistical networks and di-minished its fighting capacity,” the statement added.

CAR’s presidency said last month it has attempted to negotiate the surrender of the rebels. Some African Union officials said, however, that this was a ploy by Kony to buy time and move his fighters. Long driven out of Uganda, LRA fighters now roam remote forest regions of CAR, Sudan, South Sudan and DR Congo.

Last month the LRA attacked five villages in South Sudan’s Western Equatoria province, killing three people and looting food and medical supplies, and forcing several hundred to flee, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in a report.

BANGKOK — Since being ousted as Thailand’s prime minister in a 2006 military coup, Thaksin Shinawatra has been a very busy man. The billionaire bought and sold England’s Man-chester City football club, acquired a titanium mine in Zimbabwe, started a lottery in Uganda and acquired a Nicaraguan passport. He met with Vladimir Putin and Nelson Mandela.

KEROBOKAN - Petitenget temple and beach is located at Banjar Batubelig, Kerobo-kan village kecamatan Kuta. To reach this object by motor vehicle from Denpasar, travel westwards more or less 10 km then turn south, or to the north from Kuta following Raya Seminyak Street. Peti Tenget temple was built in the 15th century and it used to be a plot of extraordinary holy (Tenget) land, bush growth and dwelled by the I Bhuta Ijo demon that was trusted by Holy priest, Dang Hyang Nirartha to safe-guard his holy box. The story is told that when the priest stayed at south port (now Uluwatu), a man from Kerobokan village came asking the priest for help.

He wished to cultivate the plot of land without feel-ing fear. The priest suggested that the people build a temple dedicated to god ‘Labuhan Masceti’ and a single closed shrine (Pagedongan) for Bhuta Ijo as a place to safeguard the priest’s box (Peti). From that time on, the temple was named Petitenget Temple. IBP/File Photo

Oklahoma City’s Kevin Durant added 18 points, and the Thunder had enough in hand to rest both him and Durant in the fourth quarter while maintaining a double-digit lead. Mike Conley had 20 points for the Grizzlies, who were playing the last of a season-long six-game homestand.

Golden State’s Stephen Curry made a pull-up jump shot with 3 seconds remaining to cap a sensa-tional fourth quarter rally by the Warriors, who came from 18 points down to pip Dallas 95-93. Curry scored 16 of his 33 points in the final period and finished with nine assists, four rebounds and another big shot in a young career already full of them.

With the clock winding down, Curry dribbled on the perimeter, came off a screen, faked a shot to send an opponent jumping past him, then made a 19-footer to give Golden State the lead for good. Dallas’ Jose Calderon heaved a desperation shot at the buzzer that was never close. Harrison Barnes scored 17 points for the Warriors who overcame 18 turnovers and a sloppy start.

Monta Ellis and Dirk Nowitzki each scored 21 points for the Mav-ericks. Boston’s Jamal Crawford hit a pair of 3-pointers 23 seconds apart to help the Clippers pull away in the last 3 minutes and beat Boston 96-88. Crawford came off the bench to score 21 points and Chris Paul had

22 points, nine assists and seven rebounds for the Clippers.

Jeff Green scored 29 points for the Celtics up against his old coach Rivers. Boston lost to the Brooklyn Nets on Tuesday night, kicking off a reunion week of sorts by facing former Celtics Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce. One night later, Rivers returned to the TD Garden.

Yamaha team managing director Lin Jarvis believes the fact MotoGP’s top riders will all be out of contract at the end of 2014 will intensify the on-track competition. Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi’s current deals with Yamaha both run to the end of 2014, as do the contracts of Honda’s work duo Marc Marquez and Dani Pedrosa.

Jarvis expects that dynamic to be expressed across the season as the quartet vie for the best possible future terms. “Next year will be tough I think because all top riders - Honda and Yamaha - are all free from contract at the end of the season,” Jarvis told the official MotoGP website. “So I think it will be very intense, both on track and also off-track.”

Jarvis admitted the team was keen to tie Lorenzo’s future down, saying he did not think Yamaha’s early-2013 deficit to Honda would prompt the Spaniard to rethink allegiances. “One thing I have learned since being involved in top line rac-ing is that the best riders are never happy, never satisfied with the bike,” Jarvis said. “They might have a small smile one day but the next day they are searching for something new.

“We realised the first half of this season we were behind our competitors, [and] we know we have to work very hard this winter to provide Jorge with the bike he needs to win the championship. “From Yamaha’s side all I can say is we are extremely happy with what Jorge has done for us, [and] is still doing for us. “We hope he will do it for many years in the future as well.”

ROSSI NEEDS TO IMPROVEJarvis conceded that Rossi needs to improve in 2014.

The Italian has openly said that he would like a final, two-year extension with Yamaha provided he can showed sufficiently improved form over the first six races. “Next year [Valentino] knows he has to improve his performance to be consistent with the three top guys,” Jarvis added.

“His motivation is big, he knows it is a very important year to determine his future. “He’ll have our full support, and I think he’ll be really aggressive next year, trying to be on the podium in every moment.”

MEMPHIS, Tennessee — Oklahoma City made it 12 wins from 13 games with a 116-100 win at Memphis on Wednesday, with Russell Westbrook scoring 27 points for the Thunder. Among other games, Golden State rallied from a big deficit and came up with a last-gasp winner to sink Dallas, former Celtics coach and now L.A. Clippers boss Doc Rivers won his first game back in Boston, and San Antonio’s experienced core led the Spurs to a rout of Milwaukee.

AC Milan will be Italy’s only rep-resentatives in the knockout stage as Galatasaray, Zenit St Petersburg and Schalke 04 secured the remaining last 16 places in Monday’s draw which will feature four representatives each from the Premier League and Bundesliga. Barcelona, who should have Lionel Messi back from injury when the competition resumes in February, signed off from the group phase in style with Brazil striker Neymar scoring a hat-trick, his first Champions League goals, in a 6-1 romp over Celtic at the Nou Camp.

Jose Mourinho can also look for-ward to the draw as Group E winners Chelsea went through the motions in overcoming Steaua Bucharest 1-0 at Stamford Bridge. Napoli, who drop into the Europa League, are only the second team to be eliminated from the group phase with 12 points from six games after Paris St Germain in 1997-98.

In contrast, Russia’s Zenit fin-ished runners-up in Group G by becoming the first team to qualify for the knockout stages with six points. Injury-hit Dortmund were just minutes away from a trapdoor into Europe’s second-tier competition when Grosskreutz found the back of the net with a deflected shot three minutes from time against 10-man Marseille.

“It was great feeling to score and to score such a goal. We deserved it, it was sensational,” said the match-winner. Napoli’s victory, secured with late fforts from Gonzalo Higuain and Jose Callejon, the second deep into stoppage-time, could not save Rafa Benitez’s side from an agonising exit as Arsenal had to lose by three goals in order to miss out on qualification. “We are happy to be through because it was very difficult,” said Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger. “Naples played very well tonight but we were a little bit on edge for some minutes, it was nervous in the end, but we got through.”

BOOKABLE OFFENCE

It was the 14th season in a row that Arsenal, who had captain Mikel Arteta sent off for a second bookable offence in the 75th minute, have reached the last 16. Seven-times European champions AC Milan clung on with 10 men for a point at home against Ajax Amsterdam to finish runners-up behind Barca in Group H and earn some respite in a below-par season.

Milan had captain Riccardo Montolivo sent off midway through the first half but Ajax could not take advantage and secure the victory they needed to leapfrog the hosts. Christian Poulsen hit the post for the Dutch side after five minutes and Milan keeper Christian Abbiati was forced into a number of saves.

Galatasaray ended the campaign of Italian champions Juve with a 1-0 success in Istanbul, Wesley Sneijder hitting a late winner in a game re-started on Wednesday following Tuesday’s abandonment because of heavy snow.

On a slippery pitch, Sneijder broke the deadlock in the 85th minute as Galatasaray’s win lifted them above Juve in Group B. “That goal is very important for me but even more important for the club,” Dutch international Sneijder said.

The Turkish side’s goal differ-ence of minus 6 is the lowest of any team to qualify from a Cham-pions League group, eclipsing the minus 4 of Norway’s Rosenborg in 1996-97. Zenit went through despite a 4-1 humbling at Austria Vienna, finishing a point ahead of Porto who lost 2-0 at Group G table-toppers Atletico Madrid.

Schalke beat Basel 2-0 to deny the Swiss side second spot in Group E, helped by a fine goal from Julian Draxler and a clearly offside effort from Joel Matip.

Reuters LONDON - Arsenal’s lunch-

time game at Manchester City on Saturday could be a defining one for their Premier League title hopes, even if Arsene Wenger has greeted that idea with a typi-cally Gallic shrug. The Gunners have a comfortable cushion over second-placed Liverpool, who travel in the opposite direction on Sunday for a clash in North London with sixth-placed Tot-tenham Hotspur (1600 GMT), and Chelsea.

“We are five points ahead and, overall, the Premier League is a marathon,” said Wenger, speak-ing before his side progressed to the knockout stages of the Cham-pions League despite a 2-0 defeat to Napoli on Wednesday that left them facing a potentially tricky last-16 clash. “We will be in the race no matter what happens.”

City, who surged back from 2-0 down to beat European cham-pions Bayern Munich 3-2 in Ger-many in their final Champions League group game, are fourth and six points behind Wenger’s men. Despite their position, Arse-nal will be the underdogs against a side who remain unbeaten at home in the league this season

and see no reason why they can-not at least match Manchester United’s 1-0 win over the north Londoners last month.

“With the disappointing re-sults we have had away from home, it’s important that we try to go through the season win-ning every single home game,” City’s England midfielder James Milner, who scored the winner on Tuesday, said. “That won’t be easy, but the way we are play-ing we can do that.” Neither of City’s top two league goalscorers played in Munich with Sergio Aguero, the second most prolific scorer in the Premier League after Liverpool’s Luis Suarez, rested and Yaya Toure suspended.

Arsenal were held 1-1 at the Emirates by Everton last week-end but their defence has been tough to penetrate with three clean sheets before the Everton game and two goals conceded in their last nine league and Euro-pean games prior to Wednesday.

GERRARD OUT

Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea, at home to struggling Crystal Palace on Saturday (1500), play at Arsenal before Christmas and could be in a position by then to take the overall

lead if Liverpool stumble at Spurs. They have let in six goals in their last two Premier League games, however, and the leaky defence will have to be made watertight.

“We are creating a lot, we are playing a lot of nice football, but we have to finish off opponents,” Mourinho said before Chelsea’s 1-0 home Champions League victory against Steaua Bucharest.

While Suarez is on fire, with 15 league goals in 10 matches after being belatedly awarded a second from last weekend’s 4-1 thrashing of West Ham United, Liverpool will be without England captain Steven Gerrard.

Media reports indicated he would be out for at least a month with a hamstring injury, joining striker Daniel Sturridge on the sidelines for the busy Christmas period and matches at Manchester City and Chelsea.

Champions Manchester United, 13 points behind Arsenal, are at As-ton Villa on Sunday (1330) after the confidence boost of beating Ukraini-ans Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday to top their Champions League group. Fifth-placed Everton, a point behind Manchester City, are at home to Fulham (1500) on Saturday while seventh placed Newcastle United host Southampton (1500).

MADRID - With Lionel Messi not due back from injury until next month, Barcelona will be looking to Neymar to add to Wednesday’s hat-trick against Celtic and help the champions get back to winning ways in La Liga. Barca needed a convincing Champions League per-formance against the Scottish side after consecutive defeats to Ajax Amsterdam and Athletic Bilbao and the Brazil forward responded with his first goals in Europe’s elite club competition in a 6-1 romp at the Nou Camp.

Bought from Santos in the close season for a fee of close to 60 mil-lion euros ($82.7 million), Neymar had been threatening to explode into life without really delivering and the 21-year-old’s performance on Wednesday, when he also assisted a Pedro goal, suggested he may have turned a corner.

Assuming the mantle of Argentine World Player of the Year Messi would be a heavy burden for anyone, let alone a man in his early 20s, but Neymar appears anything but phased by the responsibility. “I didn’t feel any pressure,” he told Spanish television broadcaster Canal Plus.

“We are hoping that after the two bad results this victory will help us in La Liga,” he added. “Two defeats in a row for us meant a big win was very welcome.”

Barca’s shock reverse at Bilbao, their first of the domestic league campaign, erased their three-point lead at the top over Atletico Madrid and they host fifth-placed Villarreal on Saturday (1900 GMT) in the 16th round of games. Villarreal spent a season in the second division last term but have impressed on their return to the top flight.

With the likes of Mexican forward Giovani Dos Santos and captain and midfielder Bruno Soriano excelling, they are likely to give Barca a stern test, while another player who has been a key factor in their success is Cani. The 32-year-old attacking midfielder has hit some of the best form of his career and was rewarded this week with a contract extension until June 2017.

Ashley Young is aware of his reputation as a “diver” but insists it is up to referees to ad-dress the issue. The 28-year-old has recently come under fire for a perceived habit of going to ground easily, including against Crystal Palace in the Premier League and Real Sociedad in the Champions League this term, and says both current United manager David Moyes and his predecessor Alex Ferguson had spoken to him about it.

“Of course I understand what you’re saying and everyone is going to have their say on it, but I’ve spoken to the previous manager and current manager,

the referees are giving deci-sions and that is where I think it lies,” he was reported as say-ing by newspapers in England on Thursday. “It’s been talked about but that’s in-house. I’m not going to comment on what’s been said.

“I think it’s one to ask the ref-erees - they’re the ones who are giving free-kicks and penalties. “I remember getting booked against Palace and then won a penalty. Against Real Sociedad it was another penalty that was given. Referees have got tough decisions to make, they have a tough time out there making decisions, but they have made the right decisions, I think.”

The England international said he had not been affected by

the criticism, despite Ferguson revealing in his autobiography that he had dropped Young for a match against Everton last year over the issue. “I don’t take notice of the headlines or the debates,” he added.

“That’s obviously for the me-dia to debate and people to have their say on it and everyone is entitled to have their say on it. For me, the referees have made decisions and that’s it.”

Young, who started in Tues-day’s Champions League win over Shakhtar Donetsk, has struggled to win a place in the United line-up under Moyes, but was hopeful of finding form as he seeks a place in the England squad for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Dortmund leave it late, Milan limp into last 16

Reuters

LONDON - Last season’s runners-up Borussia Dortmund were spared a Champions League exit when a dramatic late goal from Kevin Grosskreutz sent the German side into the last 16 on Wednesday. Dortmund, who beat Olympique Mar-seille 2-1, Arsenal and Napoli all finished on 12 points with the Bundesliga team topping Group F and the Italians proving the odd side out on head-to-head superiority despite a 2-0 victory over the English Premier League leaders.

Moreover, the action was carried

out near the Rambutsiwi Temple. It was feared the mining could threaten the wave barrier used to protect the temple from abrasion. His party would also coordinate with customary authorities and vil-lage officials to find out a solution for similar actions.

(kmb26)

Ukraine was thrown into crisis last month when President Vik-tor Yanukovych suddenly backed away from a long-awaited political and economic agreement with the European Union, deciding to focus instead on restoring trade ties with Russia.

Making Titab Reservoir a tourist attraction

PRIMARY objective of the Titab Reservoir construction project in the border of Busungbiu and Seririt subdistrict is to meet the needs of water to irrigate the agricultural areas in the western region of Buleleng. However, in later development, many people expect the reservoir can become a tourist attraction.

There are 4 room types: Garden and Panorama View (50m2). Deluxe (75m2) and Super Deluxe (100m2). They are housed in 16 Bungalows which have 2 rooms in each.

From the moment you enter the hand carved doors, you know you’re in a unique room whether it’s the Garden or the Super Deluxe. They are beauti-fully constructed and crafted using local wood and marble with beautiful conical

high ceilings and parquet flooring. The 4 poster beds are the gloss on a classical Balinese creation and the effort that has been made to keep the local look and feel is immense to the extent that mod cons are cleverly hidden so you feel you are in a traditional Balinese villa. (In keeping with the peaceful nature of this resort, the rooms do not have TV’s).

(kmb30)

Indonesia has waged a crackdown on Islamic militant networks over the past decade after attacks on Western targets, including the 2002 Bali bombings which killed 202 people, mostly foreign tourists.

The crackdown has succeeded in dismantling groups seen as a major threat although small terror cells still exist.

A giant christmas tree is displayed in front of a ferris wheel, on a plaza decorated for Christmas in Nice, southeastern France, Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2013. Several Christmas decorations are displayed in the centre of Nice city. Indonesian police warned Thursday that Islamic extrem-ists may be planning to target worshippers at Christmas and New Year celebrations in the capital Jakarta and other parts of the country.

A wide-open field hopes for Golden Globes invites

the results.Since the Globes divide many of

their categories in two, between drama and comedy or musical, there’s a lot of room for all of the above movies — even if some films will have to contort themselves to slide into one category or the other.
