DENPASAR - In November 2011, bird flu caused by H5N1 virus re-claimed fatalities of two broth-ers from Bangli where they tested positive for the virus. Head of the Bali Livestock Agency, I Putu Su-mantra, when met on Monday (Jan 9) revealed despite escalated in No-vember 2011, the presence of H5N1

Singaraja (Bali Post)—Buleleng House seemed to have

been frustrated with the mutation of teacher and principal resulting in a demonstration and strike to study by the students of SMPN 5 Busungbiu junior high school at Pucaksari Vil-lage, Busungbiu, since Friday (Jan 6). To that end, the Buleleng House summoned the Head of Education Agency and Head of Regional Civil Service Agency (BKD) to clarify the matter.

Chairman of the Commission D in Buleleng House, Made Suputra, said on Tuesday (Jan 10) the Head of Education Agency and Head of Re-gional Civil Service Agency were two agencies considered to know about the mutation of teacher and principal triggering the student’s protest and disruption against the teaching and learning process in school. he said.Made Suputra said the meeting

with the Head of Education Agency and the Head of Regional Civil Ser-vice Agency did not merely talk about the problems occurring in SMPN 5 Busungbiu. His party also questioned about the mutation of teachers and principals carried out successively since a few months ago. His party wanted to know why the agencies in Buleleng Regency carried out the mutation, whether it was actually for the advancement of education or due to political problems. “We will ques-

education conducted by the executive so far,” he said.

In fact, the students’ strike in SMPN 5 Busungbiu remained to continue last Tuesday. They did not attend school. Meanwhile, the students’ parent made a meeting by inviting headman from three villages, namely Sepang Village, Pucaksari Village and Bongancina Vil-lage. The meeting was also attended by the Head of Buleleng Education Agency, Gede Suyasa. In the meeting, the parents asked relevant agency to promptly take appropriate measure

Gede Suyasa also said that his party already met the students last Monday. During the meeting, he could provide insight to the students by conduct-ing face to face dialogue. From the dialogue, in principle, the students would accept the new principal. “As the student’s promise, they are going to study as usual,” said Suyasa.

According to Suyasa, his party had also given the same insight to parents and headmen last Tuesday. They ac-cepted the mutation as the authority of local government. “All parents and headmen have promised if they would bring their children to school to study as usual,” he said.

Budi Adnyana explained that based on the facts revealed in the trial, there was time difference related to determi-nation of the status of non-performing loans to PT Ratu Kharisma. Based on the Debtor Information System (SID) document issued by Bank Indonesia, the credit of PT Ratu Kharisma was declared to be in congestion dated Feb-

Meanwhile, Ngurah Muliarta added that allegation of another violation com-mitted by Bank Swadesi was the matter of collateral asset auction of PT Ratu Kharisma, namely the land and Kozy Villa. Muliarta said that pursuant to the Regulation of Minister of Finance of the

Thus, continued Ngurah Muliarta, the last auction on February 11, 2011 should be void for the sake of law.

“In fact, previously on February 7, 2011 there was a lawsuit by William—the tenant of villa—registered in the Denpasar District Court. Even, in the auction we explained that we have sued the object of auction in the Denpasar District Court, but it was still contin-ued,” explained Gede Agus Kusuma Nugraha registering the lawsuit and was now on trial in the Denpasar Dis-trict Court.

Romney took a crucial step toward the Republican nomination on Tuesday with his win in New Hampshire, the second contest in the state-by-state battle for the Republican nomination. He won 39 percent of the vote and was well ahead of his nearest rival.

The former private equity execu-tive also won the Iowa caucuses last week. He may now find it easier to convince skeptics within his own party that he is the strongest Repub-lican to take on Obama in Novem-ber’s election, despite qualms about

the moderate policies he pursued as Massachusetts governor.

Victory in South Carolina’s Jan-uary 21 primary could derail rivals’ hopes to consolidate a splintered conservative vote and set Romney on a steady march to nomination. With economic concerns topping the agenda, Romney has argued that his experience as head of in-vestment firm Bain Capital, where he made a personal fortune, would make him the best candidate to put the shaky U.S. economy on a stronger footing.

Romney gave perhaps the most dynamic speech of his campaign in Tuesday as he celebrated his victory in New Hampshire, outlining a stark contrast with Obama. Aides said it would set the tone for the rest of the campaign.

“We know that the future of this country is better than 8 or 9 percent unemployment. It is better than $15 trillion in debt. It is better than the misguided policies and broken promises of the last three years - and the failed leadership of one man,” he said.

In recent days, rivals like former House of Representatives speaker Newt Gingrich have painted Romney as a heartless corporate raider who cut jobs in the companies he bought -- an unusual debate in the business-friendly Republican Party.

BEIRUT — By turns defiant and threatening, President Bashar Assad vowed Tuesday to use an “iron hand” to crush what he called the terrorists and saboteurs behind Syria’s 10-month-old uprising in which thousands of people have been killed.

In his first speech since June, Assad showed a steely confidence in the face of the uprising, one of the bloodiest of the Arab Spring. But opponents called it a rambling address by a leader who is danger-ously out of touch.

Assad repeated his past claims that a foreign conspiracy and ter-rorists are driving the revolt, not peaceful protesters seeking to reform the country.

“We will not be lenient with

those who work with outsiders against the country,” Assad said in a nearly two-hour speech at Damascus University in a con-ference hall packed with cheer-ing supporters. He also issued a veiled threat against those who have yet to choose sides.

“Those who stand in the mid-dle are traitors,” Assad said, flanked by Syrian flags. “There is no alternative.”

The conflict in Syria is entering a new and heightened phase, with army defectors and some members of the opposition increasingly turning their weapons on govern-ment targets. The regime, in turn, has intensified an already deadly military assault, and a U.N. official said Tuesday that about 400 people have been killed in the last three weeks alone, on top of an earlier U.N. estimate of more than 5,000 dead since March.

Since Dec. 23, three mysteri-ous blasts have struck the capital, killing scores of people in the kind of violence more commonly seen in neighboring Iraq. It’s unclear who is behind the bomb-ings, which the regime said were suicide attacks.

The regime has blamed “ter-rorists” for the explosions, say-ing they proved that Syria was fighting armed gangs. But the opposition accuses forces loyal to the regime of carrying out the attacks as a way to tarnish the uprising.

Assad also denounced the Arab League, which sent a team of ob-servers into Syria in late December to assess whether the regime is abiding by an Arab-brokered peace plan that the regime agreed to on Dec. 19. On Monday, a group of Arab League observers was report-edly attacked in northern Syria, suffering minor injuries.

TEHRAN - An Iranian nuclear scientist was killed by a bomb placed on his car on Wednesday in an attack Tehran’s deputy governor blamed on Israel, raising the dip-lomatic temperature in a stand-off with the West over Iran’s nuclear program. The bombing, which a city official said was similar to attacks a year ago on nuclear sci-entists in Iran, came as the United States sought to persuade a skepti-cal China to help efforts to toughen sanctions against Iran.

“The bomb was a magnetic one and the same as the ones previously used for the assassination of the scientists, and is the work of the

Zionists (Israelis),” Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency quoted Tehran’s Deputy Governor Safarali Baratloo as saying.

Fars said the victim was a “nu-clear scientist” who “supervised a department at Natanz Uranium Enrichment Facility.” New U.S. sanctions against Iran have started to bite. The rial currency lost 20 percent of its value against the dollar in the past week and Iran has threatened to shut the Strait of Hormuz, through which 40 percent of trade oil passes.

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, visiting Beijing, appealed for Chinese cooperation on nuclear non-proliferation, while Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Iran’s

move to enrich uranium near the city of Qom was “especially troubling.”

“This step once again demon-strates the Iranian regime’s blatant disregard for its responsibilities and that the country’s growing isolation is self-inflicted,” Clinton said in a statement that followed Iran’s announcement it had started enrichment in the Fordow mountain bunker complex.

Iran’s decision to carry out en-richment work deep underground at Fordow could make it much harder for U.S. or Israeli forces to carry out veiled threats to use force against Iranian nuclear facilities. The move to Fordow could narrow a time window for diplomacy to avert any attack.

“Start ing today the brand `Southeast Asia Feel The Warmth` is officially introduced in Indone-sia,” Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Mari Elka Pangestu said here on Wednes-

day.According to Mari, the prepa-

ration to make ASEAN a single destination was getting better and therefore free visa among ASEAN countries should be implemented

as soon as possible.“Therefore ASEAN heads of

states/government have agreed that the visa-free problem will be dealt with this year to make it free indeed,” Mari said.

In connection with immigra-tion issue, the minister said the governments of ASEAN member states were ripening “ASEAN Schengen Visa” as the “common visa procedure” that had been used in 27 European countries.

“For the issue of ASEAN Schengen Visa, related ministers should give their inputs in the next summit in April or May this year because the ministry of tour-ism and creative economy will monitor it,” Mari said.

The ongoing ASEAN Tourism Forum in Manado that would last from January 8 - 15 was made up of the 35th ASEAN National Tourism Organization Meeting, Ministerial Meeting, and Travel

Exchange participated in by 1400 participants from all ASEAN member states.

Of the 1400 participants, 400 are buyers, 900 are sellers, and 100 are reporters from interna-tional media.

JAKARTA - Chief Economic Minister Hatta Rajasa said the government would increase the people`s access to Small-holding Business Credit (KUR) scheme in 2012.

“The government`s target is to increase the people`s access to the KUR scheme in 2012 by adding 13 regional government banks (BPD), for example,” the coordinat-ing minister for economic affairs said here

on Tuesday.Hatta made the remarks in a press

conference after attending a coordination meeting with Industry Minister MS Hi-dayat, Cooperative and Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) Minister Syarief Hasan and other relevant state officials.

The minister said that so far a BPD had been able to provide an average credit allocation of over Rp20 million to small businesses in the retail sector.

The chief economic minister said that

the government had set itself a target of providing a KUR credit worth Rp30 tril-lion in 2012 through a number of executing banks such as Bank BRI, Bank BNI, Bank Mandiri, Bank BTN, Bank Bukopin, Bank Syariah Mandiri and BPD.

“Of the total KUR allocation in 2012, about 50 percent will be channeled to the people by bank BRI, Therefore, we ask Bank BRI to continue to increase the credit extension coverage up to villages in rural areas,” Hatta Rajasa said.

JAKARTA - The government will obtain Rp40 trillion in additional funds a year from the implementation of the subsidized fuel consumption limitation program as of April this year, Energy and Minderal Resources Minister Widjajono Par-towidagdo said.

“Until 2014 or in three years` time, the saved amount of subsidy will reach Rp120 trillion,” he said here on Wednesday.

He said the economization would bring a lot of benefit for the improvement of the people`s welfare.

“Indonesia needs funds to boost its national capacity. Therefore, subsidies must be stopped and the saved funds used to improve the national capacity,” he said.

Widjajono said the 2011 budget law had man-dated the scrapping of fuel subsidy by raising the commodity`s price. However, the government as well as the House of Representatives (DPR) would not take the option until it expired on December 31, 2011. The option then was switched to limiting fuel consumption and extending the subsidy only to eligible recipients.

“So, as of this year, private cars especially are not allowed to use subsidized gasoline but will be encouraged to use liquefied gas or non-subsidized gasoline,” he said.

He said he had asked the deputy minister of transportation to improve the system of public transportation to improve its comfort and security “to suppress the use of fuel by private cars as many car owners would switch to public transport.”

Widjajono said that he had just installed a con-verter in his car at a cost of Rp2 million done by PT Dirgantara Indonesia.

The government plans to implement the program to limit the use of subsidized fuels as of April 1, 2012 as mandated by Law Number 22 of 2011 on the 2012 budget.

The Head of Denpasar Sanitation and Landscaping Agency (DKP), Ketut Wisada, when contacted by Bali Post on Tuesday (Jan 10), said that from a variety of shade trees planted on the roadside, such as mahogany, rain tree, and narra tree, the latter was prone to break. Evidently, since the heavy rain accompanied with strong

Monday, the most toppling trees were angsana, hibiscus and banyan tree, but there were also other small trees. “At least, there are some 15 toppling trees due to heavy rain accompanied

on Tuesday. Even, previously 8 trees toppled, too. After getting information

came to location to cut down to its roots,” he explained.

He continued that shade trees like hibiscus and narra tree had no longer been planted, considering the root was weaker and tended to damage the surface of soil. “This tree is prolifer-ated by stem, so the root is not strong enough to withstand. Since the past three years, we only focus on the cultivation of regenerative shade tree or directly cultivated from the seeds of local products such as mahogany, rain tree and so forth. Ketut Wisada added

occurred at Renon, on Jalan Merdeka, Jalan Trijata, Jalan Kamboja, Jalan Sudirman, Jalan Pulau Kawe, Sesetan and Jalan Tulip.

“Most of the toppling trees at this moment are not too big. The bigger ones are only banyan tree and hibiscus as on Jalan Sudirman. Even, to handle such a big tree, it took our staff 3 hours,” he ex-plained. As anticipative measure to reduce the threats against the safety of road users on entering the rainy season, the ranks of Sanitation and Landscaping Agency (DKP) had routinely cut and pruned the shade trees. Pruning was a measure to streamline the trees by reducing branches to reduce the burden of the tree, so it remained strong. Meanwhile, cutting was intended to shorten the tree, not to cut down the entire trunk. (bit)

Advancement of science of technology does not answer all problems encountered by human life. In agriculture, for instance, modern farm-ers can now have boosted the quantity of production, even in multiple amounts. On the one hand, it’s a great success but on the other hand it still leaves a problem on the decline of environmental and human health quality.

Green revolution occurred between 1943 and 1970s through the imple-mentation of chemical fertilizer and good irrigation system has conjured

to resolve the famine in tropical countries. Few decades later, it had an impact on the reduction of environmental quality, like pollution in water, land and others. Apart from the impact on the environment, it was also had an impact on human health like the rise of some new cancers.

Realizing these facts, now Bali has an initiative to become a green province and implement the integrated farming system (Simantri). Hopefully, implementation of the system could realize the Bali Organic plan and consequently minimize the environmental destruction. Green province campaign includes some aspects, namely green culture, green economy and Bali green and clean. Green culture is intended to change the societal behavior in managing their waste management and environ-ment. Green economy hints that all economic activities should be in the eco-friendly orientation. These two aspects will empty out into the initiative of Bali Organic.

Other than increasing the number of cows, they will be able to take ad-vantage the cow dung and urine for organic fertilizers. In the long run, it will reduce the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Of course, this endeavor will reduce the production cost that should be spent by farmers and at the same time increase the quality of rice as well as improve the environmental quality.

As a matter of fact, simple practice of this concept could have been seen around 1970s. Farmers using cows to cultivate their land could also

upper stream. Later on, the collected dry cow dung was channeled to rice

However, since being urged by the demand to multiple the rice produc-tion, farmers left the method. Introduction of hand tractor and chemical fertilizers gradually replaced the role of cows. The new method was expected to accelerate the land cultivation process. As consequence, cows were only serving as ‘family saving’ for farmers.

Simple eco-friendly pest control actually has been proposed in the palm-leaf manuscript entitled “Shri Tattwa or Darmaning Pemaculan.” It has been applied by subak community in Bali from generation to generation until today. However, it seems to put more emphasis on the ritual aspect only, while herbal pesticide or other means of the oblation is only applied symbolically. For instance, bird raids are managed by offering two pieces of

Meanwhile, Subash Palekar from India claimed to have developed the vedic-based farming. He has initiated his ‘spiritual farming’ since 1988. In essence he said that God or nature has provided human with everything required to grow plants. So implementing the chemical fertilizers and pesticide means to oppose God and will result in bad impact to human.

being enough for farming both on irrigated and non-irrigated land. By doing so, he claims it is a ‘zero budget of natural farming’ as in his trilogy book entitled Philosophy of Spiritual Farming.

To sum up, all movements at least refer to the same keywords namely green, natural and eco-friendly concept. They denote milestone of new awareness on modern human to re-orientate their food production in quality. This awareness has triggered the orientation in the quality of life and environment. Hopefully, the aspiration of Bali as Green Province and other green concepts could be realized supported by entire community based on their awareness of a better quality life! (BTN/punia)

DENPASAR - Bali will be dropped in by 38 cruise ships conveying thousands of tourists in 2012. General Manager of Pelabuhan Indonesia (Pelindo) III Benoa, Iwan Sabatini, stated that so far the Benoa Harbor was the most favored by foreign tourists reaching 53 percent of the cruise trips in Indonesia.

“We will continue to improve the services of human resources and supporting facilities at the harbor. In the future, more cruise ships of larger size will be coming to Indonesia. Their length is more than 200 meters and length overall (LOA) of more than 300 meters,” said Sabatini, recently.

According to him, such conditions required the development of pier infrastructure with the more adequate depth of groove and LWS of the pool up to 12 meters. Until this year-end, Benoa Harbor, Bali, had recorded the sojourn of 35 cruise ships. The figure exceeded the target of visit amounting to 28 units.

“In 2011, our target only amounts to 28 units, but the cruise ship coming up to the last week of December reached 35 units. The last cruise ship recorded to come at Benoa Harbor is Azamara Cruises,” he said.

Sabatini further explained the cruise ship was going to arrive this week and brought up to 800 tourists. They were scheduled to visit a number of tourist destinations on the Island of the Gods. To Benoa Harbor, the visit of cruise ship was a proud achievement. “The growing number of cruise ships dropping in Bali indicates the Island of the Gods is increasingly in demand by foreign tourists,” he said.

He described that Pelindo III Benoa as seaport business entity (BUP) was given a mandate by the Ministry of Transportation as well as the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy to serve cruise

According to him, in January 2012 the Benoa Harbor would be dropped in by the Legend of Sea Cruises with the LOA of 264 meters. Few months ago, the cruise ship berthed in the waters of Benoa Harbor. But in 2012 the cruise ship was expected to berth on the quay because the incoming groove and harbor pond had been deepened and widened up to 9.5 meters, and had an average width of 150 meters.

More Batman with “The Dark Knight Rises.” More Peter Parkerwith “The Amaz-ing Spider-Man.” More short guys on a quest with “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.” More vamps and werewolves with “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 2.” More cool sunglasses with “Men in Black 3.” More Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and Incredible Hulk with “The Avengers.” More prehistoric pals with “Ice Age: Continental Drift.” More traveling zoo animals with “Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted.” There’s even more Curly, Larry and Moe with “The Three Stooges.”

Add in three action flicks based on clas-sic fairy tales and four 3-D reissues of major blockbusters, and 2012 might make good on Hollywood’s aim to lure back audiences after movie attendance last year dipped to its lowest since 1995. Here’s a look at the year’s coming attractions:

SUPERHERO PARADE:Nicolas Cage provides a winter warm-up

with “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance” (Feb. 17), returning as the bounty hunter from hell on a mission to rescue a child from the devil.

The heavy-hitters arrive this summer. First up is “The Avengers” (May 4), team-ing Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris

Hemsworth as Thor, Chris Evans as Captain America, Mark Ruffalo as the Incredible Hulk, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow and Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye.

Directed by Joss Whedon, “The Aveng-ers” has S.H.I.E.L.D. leader Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) assembling a superhe-ro dream team to battle Thor’s bad brother (Tom Hiddleston). After two “Iron Man” flicks with his billionaire inventor Tony Stark at center stage, Downey said it was an adjustment joining an ensemble.

“In his world, there are just people who satellite around him. So this was sort of a man-datory humility, and it’s definitely getting me in the right mindset for parenting,” said Downey, who’s expecting a baby with wife Susan.

Next comes “The Amazing Spider-Man” (July 3), with Andrew Garfield taking over as Peter Parker in director Marc Webb’s new take on how a mutant spider bite turns the gangly teen into the web-slinging hero.

“Every single human being can relate to feeling like this ordinary person that wishes they could do so much more, and what would happen if all of a sudden, you’re a skinny kid that could?” said Emma Stone, who plays Peter’s romantic interest, Gwen Stacy. “If you’ve ever been a teenager, you’ve felt like that.

Longoria, with exaggerated panic, responded, “It gets higher?” Then she looked on the bright side, suggesting the third time would be the charm. “Desperate Housewives” will end its eight-year run this season on ABC.

An appetite-curbing hormone found in the gut may help overweight and obese people shed weight, lower blood pressure and reduce cholesterol levels, according to a study released Wednesday. Known as glucagon-like peptide-1, or GLP-1, the hormone is naturally secreted from the intestine when we eat.

Recently, doctors have begun to use GLP-1 to treat patients with type 2 diabetes due to the mol-ecule’s ability to regulate sugar levels in the blood. But they also

noticed that the hormone appeared to make patients less hungry, rais-ing the question of whether it could work as a treatment for obesity.

A team of researchers led by Tina Vilsboll of the University of Copenhagen designed a study to find out. Reviewing medical lit-erature, they analysed the results of 25 clinical trials involving over 6,000 patients who had been given GLP-1. Patients with and without diabetes who received a minimum dosage for at least 20 weeks showed greater weight loss than control groups, they reported in the British

Medical Journal (BMJ).There was also improvement

in blood pressure, cholesterol and glycaemic control, the process by which the body adjusts the impact of carbohydrates on blood sugar levels. The findings provide “convincing evidence” that GLP-1 “results in clinically relevant beneficial effects on body weight” for obese patients, the researchers concluded.

“Additional beneficial effects on blood pressure and total cho-lesterol might also be achieved.” The treatment had side-effects in some patients, including vomiting, nausea and diarrhoea. But this did not seems to effect the number of people dropping out of the trials, suggesting that, overall, GLP-1 was well tolerated, they said.

Vilsboll and colleagues recom-mended that the hormone be “con-sidered” for obese patients suffering from diabetes, and called for further trials to test its efficacy for obese people who are not diabetic.

In a commentary, also in the BMJ, Raj Padwal from the Univer-sity of Alberta argued that -- de-spite its weight-reducing powers -- GLP-1 should not alter current medical practice. “Modification of diet and lifestyle remain the cor-nerstone of the treatment of type 2 diabetes,” he said. The hormone’s longterm safety is still unknown, he added.

He wants to scrap the current curriculum from September, the start of the new school year, and instead let schools decide what to teach, drawing on resources developed by experts. “Instead of children bored out of their minds being taught how to use Word and Excel by bored teachers, we could have 11-year-olds able to write simple 2D computer animations,” Gove will say.

“By 16, they could have an understand-ing of formal logic previously covered only in university courses and be writing their own apps for smartphones.” Gove believes that pupils are not properly prepared for the world of work by the current technology

curriculum. He also wants to revive the legacy of

Alan Turing, the British mathematician seen as the father of computer science who notably worked on cracking the German Enigma code during World War Two. One of Gove’s advisors is computer games and fantasy entrepreneur Ian Livingstone, who told BBC radio that the lessons currently being taught in schools were “completely irrelevant.”

“It’s a travesty given our heritage as the most creative nation in the world,” Living-stone said. “Children are being forced to learn how to use applications rather than to make them. They are becoming slaves to the user interface and are totally bored by it.”

Google chairman Eric Schmidt last year said Britain was “throwing away your great computer heritage” by failing to teach programming in schools.

LOS ANGELES — A NASA spacecraft is aiming for an August landing on Mars. The one-ton rover nicknamed Curiosity is poised to fire its thrusters Wednesday to put itself on course.

The maneuver is expected to last nearly three hours and will be tracked by deep space antennas.

Engineers have several more chances over the next several months to fine-tune Curiosity’s flight path before touchdown inside a crater near the Martian equator.

The goal of the $2.5 billion mission is to see whether Mars, now cold and barren, might have been hospitable for microbial life.

The ‘mystery man’ accused by Amir Khan of interfering with judges’ scorecards in his world title defeat by Lamont Peterson helps the Inter-national Boxing Federation (IBF)

Khan, who lost his WBA super-lightweight and IBF light-welter-weight titles to the American in Washington D.C., had posted Twitter messages highlighting footage from the clash and questioning the pres-ence of the man at ringside.

“At this point in time the IBF has decided to break its silence and pro-

Al-Attiyah had remained optimistic that he could pull off a second straight win even when nearly three quarters of an hour behind Peterhansel at the rally’s halfway point, but further issues with his Hummer - today in the form of alternator and engine problems - saw the World Rally Championship regular forced to

finally withdraw from the event.Even as one Hummer retired, the team’s

chances of victory were boosted as Gordon claimed his first stage win of the 2012 Da-kar, beating X-raid Mini driver Peterhansel by 1m38s to reduce the Frenchman’s lead to just under six minutes.

“We pushed, like qualifying hard, not

really knowing where you’re going,” said Gordon. “We had a couple of big scary moments.

“For us, we’ve got to make time. We’re in a different position to him. He has to conserve his time and I’ve got to make it. We’ve got four days left, four real days of racing left and the Hum-mer’s strong.”

The battle for third is also still ongo-ing, with Krzysztof Holowczyc’s advan-tage over X-raid team-mate Nani Roma reduced to 2m37s after an error by the Pole today.

FERRARI will launch its 2012 Formula 1 challenger on February 3 at Maranello, team principal Stefano Do-menicali has confirmed. Speaking at the annual Wrooom event, Domenicali said that Ferrari also planned to hold an initial shakedown of its 2012 car either on its launch or on the following day, February 4.

Following a disappointing season in 2011, Do-menicali admitted that Ferrari faced a new set of expectations for the new season but said his approach remained calm and relaxed. “To take the new season with anxiety does not help, so it is useless to feel stress,” he asserted.

“We do know the season is going to be important and delicate from many points of view, but this is part of the sport and this type of situation is part of the context in which Ferrari has been operating in.

“Clearly there are expectations we have to manage in the best possible way. The emotional side is impor-tant, especially in a team like ours, so my approach and the approach I have always had is of being calm, relaxed and determined - without feeling de-motivated if things should not go better at the start, and not being too positive if things go well at the beginning.”

Robby Gordon moved to within 5m58s of Dakar Rally leader Stephane Peterhansel by winning Tuesday’s Antofagasta to Iquique stage, but the American’s Hummer team-mate - and 2011 event winner - Nasser Al-Attiyah’s bid for a repeat victory has ended in retirement.
