Speculation that the rapper’s anger over a “Jimmy Kimmel Live” parody skit that mocked him was staged was immediate after West lashed out at Kimmel in late September. But both said that their beef was authentic during a 30-minute interview on Wednesday night’s show in which West discussed a range of topics including his artistry, paparazzi, family, fashion and the idea of celebrity.

Kimmel said early in the interview that he knows West personally and always found him friendly, but that he seems misunderstood. “I don’t know if you know this, but a lot of people think you’re a jerk,” Kimmel said after West called himself a genius. West was objecting to the idea that he’s “just a celebrity.”

“When you said you think you’re a genius, I think that upsets people,” Kim-

NASHVILLE, Tennessee — Kanye West and Jimmy Kimmel quickly dispelled the idea their so-called rap feud was a publicity stunt during a sometimes uncomfortable appearance on the come-dian’s television show.

mel said. “But the truth is a lot of people think they’re geniuses, but nobody says it because it’s weird to say it. But it is most certainly more honest to say, ‘I am a genius.’”

“I’m totally weird and totally honest and I’m totally inappropriate sometimes, and the thing is for me not to say I’m not a genius I’d be lying to you and to myself.”

The fight broke out the day after Kimmel hired a child actor to portray West in a recreation of an interview West gave on BBC Radio 1 in which he discussed the limitations he’s faced as his fame has grown, among many other topics.

West told Kimmel he’s often upset with his portrayal in the media but usu-ally keeps his reaction to himself. This time, though, since he knew Kimmel,

he felt he had a license to reach out by phone and discuss his disapproval man to man.

“That elevates sometimes,” West said. “Jimmy does his thing, I do my thing, and at some point egos can flare up, and we kind of took it back to high school.”

Kimmel showed the highlights from West’s resulting Twitter rant — “You should have seen the second set of tweets,” West joked — and admitted he’d just seen a few snippets of the BBC interview before approving the skit and didn’t realize how personal it was.

“I really felt bad about all this stuff, I did,” Kimmel said after West walked on stage. West responded: “Mmm huh,” but smiled widely after watching a portion of the skit.

NEW YORK — Paul McCartney celebrated his second wed-ding anniversary with his wife and a few hundred high school students on Wednesday. The 71-year-old performed at the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts, which was opened by Tony Bennett.

McCartney said, “Happy anniversary, Baby,” to Nancy Shev-ell before going into his latest song, called “New.” He said the song was inspired by his wife as the students turned to her and gushed.

The event with iHeartRadio was to celebrate McCartney’s album, also called “New,” out next week. One student asked Mc-Cartney when he felt he officially made it in the music industry. McCartney said when the Beatles recorded their first single, “Love Me Do.”

The students cheered, and McCartney said: “You shouldn’t know about that.” The crowd, which included some adults, was feverish as McCartney performed a 13-song set from his Beatles, Wings and solo catalogue, including “Hey Jude,” ‘’Eight Days a Week” and “Jet.”

“This beats going to class,” said McCartney, who performed on the piano and the guitar along with a four-piece band.

McCartney was energetic with the students, most of whom were a bit nervous when they asked questions.

One sophomore asked why McCartney decided to continue being a musician after all of his successes.

McCartney said people frequently ask him, “Can you just retire?” “I say, ‘Thank you very much. No,’” he said.

AGRA - Indian police said Thursday they had filed a case against Miss Universe for conducting an unauthorised footwear fashion shoot at the Taj Mahal which was slammed as an “insult” by the monu-ment’s caretaker.

Twenty-one-year-old Amer-ican Olivia Culpo, wearing a long peach-coloured dress, visited the world-famous “monument to love” in Agra on Sunday during a 10-day tour of India.

Inna Grand Bali Beach is situated on the long white sandy beach of Sanur, Bali’s most popular area and shaded by coconut palm, from the luxurious ten-storey central tower building, the highest in Bali, landscaped tropical garden and cottages spread out over 45 hect-ares land.

“Bali has indeed already been very global and is even considered to have belonged to the world. So, through the APEC Summit, Bali must have more values and positions. World leaders should also keep Bali especially in terms of the environment,” said spatial analyst from the Udayana University, Dr. Putu Rumawan Salain, in Denpasar, Tuesday (Oct 8).

Further, Rumawan known to be industrious and consistently struggling for the spatial arrangement of Bali said when Bali had become a barometer and storefront of Indonesia and the world all eyes and attention of the world would be directed at Bali. It was a blessing but on the other hand containing a huge risk. Any minor disturbance against the safety or environmental destruction occurred in Bali would be heard by international community so that it drew the attention of the world. “If the envi-ronmental damage continues to occur

in Bali, it will discredit us,” he said.He did not dismiss if the environ-

ment of Bali faced many threats and the damage was increasingly severe. Many provisions in the Regional Bylaw (Perda) No. 15/2009 on the Bali Provincial Spatial Plan (RTRWP) were infringed so the spatial arrange-ment of Bali was in shambles, such as the Benoa Bay reclamation plan and inclusion of Besakih in the Na-tional Tourism Strategic Area (KSPN). “Violation against spatial arrangement widely happens. Environmental dam-age is also getting more severe. Thus, we and the leader of Bali must begin to introspect. Do not let the leader misap-ply the aspect in the development of Bali,” he said.

Moreover, added Rumawan, the values of local wisdom of Bali namely the Tri Hita Karana became a universal value and was recognized internation-ally in the context of sustainable devel-

opment. Whether liking or disliking, Bali should be able to give examples on the implementation of Tri Hita Karana lest the leader of Bali harmed and be-trayed the Tri Hita Karana philosophy, for example by issuing a policy on the environmental exploitation. If the environment of Bali was disturbed, Balinese people were also disturbed and ultimately the relationship to the Creator would also be disrupted. Ul-timately, the order of Tri Hita Karana philosophy echoed over the years would mean nothing.

“The leader of Bali must consis-tently apply the Tri Hita Karana in any development in Bali. We will feel ashamed if the Tri Hita Karana has been recognized by the world but we are not able to implement it well,” he said while hoping Balinese people to make the Tri Hita Karana an ‘ideology’ as the national ideology of Pancasila. (kmb29)

Mangupura (Bali Post)—Land arrangement project in the area of Subak Karanggadon

at Darmasaba hamlet, Darmasaba village, was protested by subak members and local community. The project estimated to make residential area was complained because it had not owned yet a permit and was conducted without notification to subak members. Not only that, residents also accused the project of violating the awig-awig or customary bylaw of Darmasaba hamlet.

As field observation made on Tuesday (Oct 8), the road con-struction was underway. A truck was carrying materials and project workers were busy unloading the materials such as stone. Heavy equipment was also used in the project. The land having been leveled was also estimated to be used as road body. Its width was about 5 meters and one of the road section used the land of paddy field.

Chief of Subak Karanggadon, I Ketut Sudarka, encountered at location claimed not to know about the project. It happened because the project owner had never coordinated with the subak. “I do not know what to be made. Seeing the condition, it can almost be ascertained if the land will be used for housing. It is impossible for farming road,” he said.

His party claimed to deplore the existence of such project. According to him, the land conversion like that would be detri-mental to local subak. The subak area spreading across an area of 53 hectares would diminish. “It is said that subak is a world cultural heritage. But, if the land conversion continues, the subak area will obviously dwindle,” he said.

As a form of protest, his party admitted to have sent a letter to Badung House, Revenue Service and Pasedahan Agung of Badung including the Regent of Badung. The letter No. 08/SBK/III/2013 dated October 2, 2013 essentially contained the objection to land conversion at Subak Karanggadon. The letter was made based on meeting decision of subak members dated April 4, 2009 which affirmed that the area of Subak Karanggadon covering 53 hectares might not be converted in order the subak remained sustainable. In essence, they were asking the government, especially the Regent of Badung, not to issue any permit for the investor related to the establishment in the subak area.

Similar opinion was also expressed by local community leaders I Ketut Udiana and Made Suka. According to Udiana, the project had violated the awig-awig of Darmasaba hamlet which ratified on December 20, 2003. In Article 24 was mentioned that moor and rice field area might not be harmed or converted into housing or the like. As adjacent resident, he also stated to reject the land plotting at the location.

Made Suka added that local residents had rejected the housing since the very beginning. Moreover, near the opened location stood the Taman Temple and khayangan temple whose sanctity was very well preserved. He was very disappointed with the current condition.

Responding to the report of local residents, relevant regional working units (SKPD) in the Badung government such as the Revenue Service and Pasedahan Agung, Highways and Water Resources Agency, Agriculture Agency as well as village officials of Darmasaba came down to location for a checking. Based on explanation of village official, the developer had not made co-ordination with village authority. In other words, the project had not got approval from the village.

Meanwhile, the Head of Revenue Service and Pasedahan Agung of Badung, I Nyoman Gede Agung Murdita, asserted the aspira-tions revealed by the public would immediately be followed up. His party also deeply supported the measures to maintain the subak area. (kmb25)

Amlapura (Bali Post)—Of approximately 7,000 hectares

of paddy fields in Karangasem, hundreds of hectares of them are hit by drought due to irrigation water crisis. As observation made on Wednesday (Oct 9), there were farmers that did not cultivate their paddy fields for fear of a long drought and worries to get no irriga-tion water. As a result, some farmers cultivated maize, peanuts or other horticulture crops.

At the paddy field in the area of Subagan, most farmers cultivated peanuts. There were also farmers planting watermelons and cu-

cumbers. Meanwhile, at Timbrah, Bugbug and Asak, some farmers planted peanuts.

Headman of Pratima village, Wayan Winda, some time ago said at Asak that indeed not all farmers cultivating their farmland could grow rice in this dry season. At the moment, farmers at Subak Dangin Tukad of local village got the turn to plant rice, while in the previous planting season was the turn of Sub-ak Dauh Tukad. Therefore, farmers at Subak Dauh Tukad cleared off their paddy field.

On the other hand, the Head of Karangasem Agriculture, Food

Crops and Horticulture Agency, Ko-mang Subratayasa, delivered that his party did not receive any reports related to the existence of paddy field facing drought. Actually, farm-ers should have anticipated such condition because the irrigation water always reduced during dry season. On that account, farmers had accustomed to applying the cropping pattern with the existing subak system. Planting rice was made in turn to avoid harvest failure due to shortage of water. After the turn to grow rice ended, they culti-vated peanut or other horticultural crops. (013)

World leaders must participate in keeping environment of BaliDenpasar (Bali Post)—

The APEC Summit in Nusa Dua is no doubt to have increasingly boosted the reputation of Bali in the international community. Bali has no longer only belonged to the people of Bali and Indonesia, but it has also been felt by people throughout the world. They admire the beauty and uniqueness of Bali with the strength of sublime culture. However, the world leaders are not only expected to visit and admire Bali with a bunch of praises, but they are also expected to maintain and preserve the environment and Balinese human upholding the Tri Hita Karana (harmony of human, nature and the Creator) concept.

Go ahead: Take a good L-O-N-G look at the gowns he is most famous for. He has given them all a lot of thought, he says, and he doesn’t really want you to miss anything.

“You have to see my dresses to see the details,” Murad says. “When you see the dress, when you touch it, you’ll discover the deep, deep details.”

Since he was young, probably since the age of 5, he has wanted to be a designer. It wasn’t exactly the norm for a little boy in Lebanon, but, no matter: He spent all his time draw-ing new styles and cutting fabric. It gave his family pause, but they were

supportive. “No one in my family is related to fashion,” he says. “It was MY hobby.”

From there, he was learning about fashion, art and theater at every chance. He doesn’t seem to be exag-gerating when he says that reading the history of Christian Dior changed his life.

“From the beginning, I’d draw the most glamorous gowns for famous women, for the stars,” says Murad during a recent interview. “I am only interested in unique pieces — I love shiny things, draped things and small details.”

And it was such a focus that it left

little time for other interests, he says. Travel is enjoyable, and New York is a particular favorite, but he’d rather be home —and Beirut is, once again, his home base after spending years in Paris — with a good book.

He has turned the passion into a bona fide business, and now can boast that he shows on Paris’ official haute couture calendar in addition to his ready-to-wear collections. An in-vitation to show a sanctioned couture collection doesn’t come easily from the supervisory board of the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture, which is the gatekeeper of France’s highest level of fashion.

PARIS — If clothes could make music, what would they sound like? This was the abstract question that Iris Van Herpen — better known for her couture creations — answered during her official Paris debut in ready-to-wear.

Van Herpen used state-of-the-art technology to stage an evocative under-ground performance, deep inside David Lynch’s Paris nightclub, “Silencio,” where models writhed against each other clad in dark shimmering dresses with touch-sensitive electronic chips inside sinewy ribs on the material.

Caressing each other in scenes that could have been lifted from a Lynch film, the models’ touches sent out audio signals to the DJ booth in the club, producing a macabre electronic musical aria that resonated around the rooms.

The atmosphere nicely complemented the darkness of the looks, which fea-tured a great techno-fabric on a cropped jacket and cross-over dress that gave off a watery, metallic sheen.

Guests including Tilda Swinton sat around metal benches around the dimly lit nightclub floor and looked on in curiosity.

“My boyfriend is a musician, and makes a piece music for each dress I design ... Now I’ve started to imagine music and a sound for each dress I make, so I wanted to explore this,” said the 29-year-old designer, who’s dressed singers such as Lady Gaga and Bjork in her couture designs.

A black skeletal sheath made of leather had the dark, organism-like feel of her exaggerated couture creations, but with a simpler silhouette that fits more to the body.

“My couture is similar to the ready-to-wear, because it comes from the same heart,” Van Herpen said.

With only 16 looks on display, next time it would be nice to see the talented designer broaden her repertoire with a larger collection.

NEW YORK — Zuhair Murad has the clients — hello, Jennifer Lopez — and the clout to put him on the path to becoming a force in fashion. It’s OK, though, if it doesn’t happen overnight. That just means more time to savor his tiny touches.

His calm but energetic perfor-mances, eradiate cleverness. This figure is a humble and easy going person. It has been about 30 years he work in Indonesian telecommunica-tion industry. His name is Hasnul Suhaimi. He now serves as President Director of PT. XL Axiata Tbk. or commonly called XL.

His stylish outfit and neat looks does not show his quite mature age. This year, he admitted that he had aged 56 years. At the age of mature and nearly retired, he has been able to demonstrate success in the tele-communication industry.

He won the position as the num-ber one in PT XL Axiata Tbk, since 1 September 2006. Before taking the prestigious job, Hasnul have a lot of experience in the world of telecom-munications in Indonesia. Hasnul an undergraduate electrical engineering of ITB began his career on an oil and gas company as an instrument engineer. After that he worked at Schlumberger oil companies around the year 1981. When the country’s telecommunications industry has not developed as it is now, he saw a big opportunity in that field.

In 1983, he decided to move to PT Indonesian Satellite Corporation Tbk. In companies that often abbre-viated as PT Indosat, he started his career as a staff planning. In between his busy time developing Indosat, he got a chance to take the MBA program at the University of Hawaii, Manoa, USA and graduated in 1992. While working at Indosat, he was assigned for two years to become Director of Commerce at Telkomsel, then to IM3.

With increasing knowledge, Hasnul managed to occupy the top position as the President Director

Further, he said that in the sec-ond quarter of 2013 the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) noted the growth in maritime and fishery sector reaching 7 percent com-pared to the same period in 2012.

Maritime and fisheries strengthen food securityBali Post

DENPASAR - Maritime and fishery sector play a strategic role in strengthening food security and encouraging the Indonesia’s economy in the future. Since the strategy of fishery industri-alization started to be launched by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) in 2011, the productivity in this sector continued to increase. It was stated by Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Sharif C. Sutardjo, on the sidelines of the APEC 2013 forum recently in Nusa Dua.

The rate of economic growth in the maritime affairs and fishery sector was higher than the na-tional economic growth of only 5.81 percent.

“Despite the industrialization

of fisheries has managed to drive the productivity and the value added in the maritime sector continues to increase, the appli-cation of Blue Economy concept will strengthen the management

of maritime potential sustain-ably, productively and in eco-in friendly manner,” he explained.

As an archipelago with 17,499 islands and having a coastline of 104,000 kilometers or second longest in the world, the potential of maritime was very large. It was estimated the economic potential of the maritime sector, whether related to natural resources or maritime services was worth more than USD 1.2 trillion per year.

Meanwhile, when met in sepa-

rate location, the Head of Central Statistical Data and Information, Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Anang Nugroho, said that to work on various as-pects of the potential maritime development in Indonesia, the government allocated a budget amounting to IDR 6 trillion to the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries.

“It is derived from the National Budget 2013 allocated to various regions across the archipelago,” he said. (kmb28)

of PT Indosat in 2005. In 2006, he decided to quit and join the PT Excelcomindo Pratama Tbk –-later become PT XL Axiata Tbk, or XL --as President Director.

Hasnul has made a significant transformation in the company. He developed a new strategy to strengthen the network, marketing and internal consolidation.

Hasnul is one example of a young leader who achieves many things. No wonder that he want to gives his knowledge about management and leading people to young gen-eration.

He achieved many awards thanks to his skill on managing company. For example he won CEO Idaman Warta Ekonomi magazine, the Best Chief Executive Officer (CEO) In-donesia 2010 from SWA Magazine, and an award from Telecom Asia Awards 2011 as Telecom CEO of the Year. The last award that he got this year is “Digital Business Leader” in Bubu Awards v0.8.

When became a speaker at the “APEC Unthinkable Week” on Thursday (3/10) at Kuta, he re-counted the changes that are now happening in the digital era. He sees digital era has high competition level. “Back in the days I began to work, I had very few competitors. It took about 15 years of work for me to become a director of the company. Currently with stiff competition and challenges, the young generation of Indonesia will find it hard to occupy an important position as a leader if they do not start from a young age,” he said.

Of this in mind, two years ago, he initiated a CSR program called XL Future Leaders. This program will provide soft skills to equip bright and

excellent students so they become ready to fill important positions in the business world, including in multinational companies, as well as being a reliable entrepreneur in the digital age.

He targeted the 10-years deploy-ment of this program, there will be at least 1,000 young Indonesian leaders are ready to plunge into the world of business and occupied important po-sitions in various companies. “I feel sorry that I didn’t think this program sooner so there will be many young-

ster able to learn something through XL Future Leaders,” he said.

Seriousness to provide additional knowledge to the younger genera-tion is demonstrated through exist-ing programs in XL Future Leaders. The curriculum was first tendered internationally. The company that makes the curriculum is an educa-tion company from New Zealand.

He claimed from 2 times of this program were held, there are so much things gained by those who had the opportunity to receive the

scholarship. They who were initially just smart in one area, after getting soft skill education become more confident in term of leading and solving problems. “Even, the young leaders when given a difficult ques-tion during a Q&A session answer it properly. Yet, it seems to me a dif-ficult question that I cannot answer,” he said modestly.

He optimistic, the program will reap benefit and able to become a role model program to make future leaders for Indonesia. (iah)

Kerry, flanked by Philippine Foreign Minister Albert del Rosario at the East Asia Summit in Brunei, said the decision was made based on “the judgment of our pilots and the airlines” due to the typhoon. He was scheduled to be in Manila on Friday.

“I want to emphasize the strength of our relationship and the bilateral ties that we have that are literally unbreakable,” Kerry added, adding that he was committed to returning to the region “within a month or so” on a visit that would include the Philippines. “This is a big storm. Obviously storms can change paths

at the last minute.”Tropical storm Nari is expected

to cross the central part of the main Philippine island of Luzon on Friday evening. The centre of the storm, with gusts of up to 120 kph (75 miles per hour) and maximum winds of 95 kph, was estimated at 510 km (about 315 miles) east of northeastern Au-rora province as of Thursday.

“We understand and look for-ward to his visit at a future date,” Abigail Valte, a spokeswoman of Philippine President Benigno Aquino, said in Manila.

Obama’s cancellation was seen as a blow to Washington’s steady

rebuilding of ties with the Philip-pines as part of its strategic rebal-ancing of military and commercial ties towards Asia. Washington is helping to upgrade the Philippines’ ill-equipped military, and is in talks for an agreement on establishing a rotational presence of U.S. forces there.

Philippine President Benigno Aquino has launched a $1.8 bil-lion modernization program and revived plans to build new air and naval bases at Subic Bay, the largest U.S. military installation in Southeast Asia before it was shut-tered in 1992.

TRIPOLI - Former rebel gunmen freed Libya’s prime minister on Thursday after holding him for sev-eral hours in reprisal for the capture by U.S. forces at the weekend of a Libyan al Qaeda suspect in Tripoli, officials said.

A Reuters journalist at the scene said protesters had opened fire at the building where Ali Zeidan was being held to demand that the group, which is affiliated with the government, free the premier.

“The prime minister has been released,” a government official said. A security source also said Zeidan was free.

Two years after a revolution ended Muammar Gaddafi’s 42-year rule, Libya is in turmoil, with its vulner-able central government and nascent armed forces struggling to contain rival tribal militias and Islamist militants who control parts of the country.

SEOUL - South Korea has indicted 100 people, including a top former state utility official, of corruption in a scandal over fake safety certifications for parts in its nuclear reactors, authorities said on Thursday.

Asia’s fourth largest economy has faced a series of shutdowns of nuclear reactors due to fake documents going back to late 2012. Of its 23 reactors, six remain offline, including three halted in May to replace cables supplied with bogus certificates.

“We hope the so-called nuclear mafia style behavior would be rooted out if strict investigations and law enforcement and system reforms continue,” Kim Dong-yeon, a top government policy coordinator, told a news briefing.

Those indicated on Thursday include a vice president at Korea Electric Power Corp (KEPCO) and a former chief executive at Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power Co, who face bribery charges. The two were arrested as the scandal unfolded.

South Korea’s tightly closed nuclear industry has been criticized for breed-ing a culture of secrecy that led to corrupt practices among officials involved in safety certification.

Officials indicated they would bring back the reactors that had been sus-pended for inspection and replacement of parts, rather than phasing them out and cutting dependence on nuclear power, which produces a third of the country’s electricity.

Three of the six out of service reactors are under maintenance or have had operational approvals expire, while the rest are having cables replaced.

The militia, which had been hired by the government to provide secu-rity in Tripoli, said it “arrested” Zeidan after U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said Libya had a role in the weekend capture in the city of Abu Anas al-Liby.

“His arrest comes after ... (Kerry) said the Libyan government was aware of the operation,” a spokesman for the group, known as the Operations Room of Libya’s Revolutionaries, told Reuters.

Before his release, an official in the Interior Ministry anti-crime depart-ment told the state news agency that Zeidan, a former diplomat and exile opposition activist against Gaddafi, was being held there and was being treated well.

The Libyan government in a statement confirmed the premier was taken at dawn to “an unknown place for unknown reasons.”

The prime minister was taken from the Corinthia Hotel, where many diplomats and top government officials live. It is regarded as one of the most secure places in Tripoli.

Denpasar (Bali Post)—Bali has successfully hosted the 21st Asia-Pacific Economic Coop-

eration (APEC) Summit on October 7-8 held in Nusa Dua. The success was revealed by Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) of Badung Chapter, AA Ngurah Alit Wiraputra, that was just like a two-side blade. On the one side, the image of the island would skyrocket in line with the economic growth and investment.

“However, on the other side, this small island will become a bone of contention that will frequently even damage the environment, nature and culture by exploiting all the potentials without paying attention to the balance of nature. Such kind of investment should be rejected,” said Alit Wiraputra in Denpasar, Wednesday (Oct 9).

It was said that investors coming to Bali should not only pay attention to the aspect of economic growth. However, they should also care for the environmental, cultural, religious and customary aspects. Moreover, their presence did not give maximal contribu-tion to common people, so the growth created would grow in vain. “Gray investors must be rejected, let alone black investors that just want to get profits without giving contribution have to be rejected,” he exclaimed.

According to him, good investors should pay attention to the environmental sustainability and do not damage the environment. “Similarly, the investment should not only be enjoyed by people of Southern Bali, but also by people of Northern and Eastern Bali that also have the right to enjoy it,” he explained.

Secretary of the Indonesian Economists Association (ISEI) of Bali Chapter, Prof. Dr. Ida Bagus Raka Suardana, also admitted that black investors did not pay attention to religion, customs, culture, social aspect and environment. This type of investor was much uglier than the money laundering. It could be imagined with the power of money they had, they could control everything.

“They close the eyes and ears for things like that. As a result, in the long term, even in short-term all unique and distinct natures and cultures can be eroded to destruction. Investors of this kind should be rejected,” he said.

He explained that many ways were committed by black investors to streamline their business. For example, those committing money laundering namely the proceeds of crime where one of which was result of corruption invested in Bali. It was invested in the form of hotel development, construction of tourism supporting facilities or other investments.

“The incoming investors are not entirely pure investors who want to build Bali (white investors). The black investors also take part in investing amid the hustles and bustles of the economic progress in Bali,” he said. (kmb27)

According to the Chairman of the Indonesian Farmers Union (HKTI) of Bangli, Nengah Merta, considering such condition the Bangli County very much needed the presence of an agro-market. It was evident from the great potential of horticulture crops that were actually sold to neighbor-

Bangli (Bali Post)—Bali tourism is never empty of

tourist arrival. A number of regional tourist destinations have always be-come a favorite for local and foreign tourists. However, amid the rapid growth of tourism in Bali, Bangli seems to always become less favored among the existing destinations. Even, not a few people call it as a place for tourists to ‘pee’ because it only serves as a stopover.

A legislator of Bangli House, Ida Bagus Santosa, said on Monday (Oct 7) that Bangli tourism was not as dynamic as tourism in Southern Bali. Even, if it was calculated in terms of the rupiah value, only a small portion of money of tourists went to Bangli. “For example, from IDR 10 million of tourist’s money, only IDR 100,000 is going to Bangli, not so much compared to the amount spent in other tourist areas,” he said. Even,

added Santosa, expenditure of tourist was far more for hotel and restaurant where most of the businesses were owned by businessmen from outside the region. Thus, the impact of tour-ism could not be enjoyed directly by Balinese people.

This FKPI politician judged that although various international events were currently held in Bali, they were not necessarily enjoyed by lo-cal communities. So far, according to him, the pie of Bali tourism had not been divided evenly. A disparity remained to happen between one county and other counties. He ex-emplified, the Regional Budget of Badung valued at IDR 2.8 trillion, denoting 75 percent of the regionally generated revenue (PAD), while the Regional Budget of Bangli was only IDR 600 billion. “It means there is an inequity in the distribution of Bali tourism pie,” he said.

According to him, to make a fair distribution of the Bali tourism pie, one of the measures to be taken by the government was through single-door levy collection to tourists. “It will be better to implement a single-door levy collection to guests com-ing to Bali. For instance, we charge every guest at IDR 1 million. So, the other guests will no longer be subject to a levy and there will be no hotel and restaurant taxes and other charges. If each guest is charged at IDR 1 million, so when guests spend IDR 10 million, logically the hotel and restaurant tax and other charges are worth IDR 1 million, too. Well, if the number of tourist arrival in Bali reaches 7 million, just multiply it by IDR 1 million, and it totally reaches IDR 7 trillion. Then, we divide this amount so there will be a fair distribution of the Bali tourism pie,” he said. (ina)

Denpasar (Bali Post)—The APEC Business Advisory

Council (ABAC) asked the APEC Leaders to accelerate the trade liberal-ization in the region. Minister of Trade, Gita Wirjawan, said the liberalization was the main goal of the APEC fo-rum as set forth in the Bogor Goals that had lowered the tariff barriers to be achieved by developed countries in 2010 and in 2020 by developing countries. “APEC has managed to reduce the rate from 16 percent when the group was established to a range of 5 percent considered less aggressive. To that end, the whole economy is encouraged to open the market more quickly with significant tariff reduc-tion,” he said in the meeting between the ABAC and APEC Leaders.

Further, he said that other than trade, the investment liberalization was

also highlighted by ABAC. According to him, ABAC also hoped that APEC could contribute more actively to ensure the success of the 9th Ministe-rial Conference of the World Trade Organization (WTO) to be held in Bali next December. “APEC leaves a mes-sage in order the ABAC could work together more closely so the WTO Ministerial Conference in Bali could result in the Trade Facilitation Agree-ment which can drive trading activity to be cheaper, faster and easier,” said Minister Gita.

ABAC also asked the APEC Lead-ers to encourage the coherence of regulations, strengthen the connectiv-ity chain, strengthen food security and energy, encourage the investment in infrastructure and development, ac-celerate the micro small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) as well as in-

volve women in the economy.Beyond the existing achievement,

Indonesia recognized that APEC still faced many challenges in the future that could disturb the optimal per-formance. “There are two obstacles hampering, namely the practice of behind-the-border barriers and the lack of facilities to develop trade and investment,” he explained.

Meanwhile, the APEC Leaders that had held a meeting for the whole day in Nusa Dua welcomed various advances in the agenda of cooperation in the field of services, trade financing, global competitiveness of the MSMEs and the capacity of farmers in achiev-ing the global food security. It was also appreciated the progress in the discus-sion on the financial issues, renewable energy, connectivity and facilitation of disaster response. (kmb28)

Horticulture abundant, Bangli has no agro-market

Bangli (Bali Post)—Bangli County is rich in potential horticulture. However, the wealth of agricultural products yielded

by residents has not been supported with the existence of representative market being capable of ac-commodating and marketing the products. As a result, the marketing of agricultural products has been fragmented and cannot be explored maximally.

ing regions such as to Klungkung and even to Badung. “Many agricultural products of Bangli are marketed to other regions, such as Klungkung and others. More ironically, a lot of Bangli residents then buy the agricul-tural products to neighboring region,” he said.

According to Merta, the govern-ment should immediately think about the agro-market to absorb the local ag-ricultural products as well as become a cheap medium to make transaction. Merta said the potential area to be developed for the agro-market was the area of Penglipuran or Bangli town.

“In my opinion, Penglipuran area is suitable for the development of the agro-tourism market because the region is strategic to be reached by the public, both from the area of Kintamani and Bangli town,” said the former legislator. Except for Penglipuran, the other area consid-ered suitable for the agro-market was Bangli town such as the LC Uma Aya neighborhood. However, Merta added that it should be preceded with an integrated assessment to the existence of the market, including

the availability of parking area. Oth-erwise, it was feared to result in a new problem in the future.

Previously, the agro-market de-velopment plan was once put into discourse by Chief of the Bangli In-dustry and Trade Agency, Ni Wayan Manik. She said if the authority of the market business could be handed over to the Industry and Trade Agency, she planned to transform the Yan-gapi Market into an agro-market that could accommodate the agricultural products of residents. DETROIT - Ford is catching up to its competi-tors in key Asian markets and expects to sell more than one million vehicles there for the first time this year, a senior executive said Wednesday.

Key to that growth is China, where Ford’s sales were up 51 percent in the first nine months of the year to 647,849 vehicles, said David Schoch, Ford’s group vice president for the Asia Pacific region.

“We’re gaining a lot of traction with the new products we’ve brought into China,” Schoch told reporters in Detroit.

The second largest US automaker expects to double its market share in China to nearly five percent by the end of this year from 2.5 percent in 2012, he said.

“We expect Ford Asia Pacific to be a major contributor to Ford profits by the middle of the decade,” added Schoch.

Schoch acknowledged that Ford was “slow” to enter the Asian market and the current plan to expand in China wasn’t put in place until four years ago.

Prior to that, Ford was distracted by a lengthy period of serious financial problems and major reorganization.

Rival General Motors was much faster to move into the Asian market and is expected to sell more than three million vehicles in China alone this year.

Ford is currently building manufacturing hubs in China, India and Thailand and recently relocated its regional headquarters to Shanghai.

While those plants will boost Ford’s regional capacity of 1.9 million units -- which vastly exceeds current sales -- the automaker is also moving ahead with the construction of six new regional assembly plants, including four in China.

That will bring total capacity to 2.9 million vehicles by 2015.

“When you’re in these emerging markets, you have to think long-term,” Schock said.

“We have very aggressive growth targets.”Ford is also expanding the number of models it

sells and will soon be introducing the Fiesta, the Mondeo and the Transit Van to the region.

The automaker expects that China -- and the region -- will play an increasingly important role in the global auto industry.

Annual vehicle sales are expected to hit 32 million in China by the end of the decade -- more than in the United States and Europe combined, Schoch said.

Meanwhile, sales in the Asia Pacific region are expected to make up 46 percent of global sales in 2020, up from 41 percent in 2013. Ford also fore-casts that global auto sales will rise to 109 million in 2020 from 82 million in 2013.

In addition to China, Ford’s Asia Pacific region includes India, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, Myanmar and the Philippines.

The spectre of a calamitous default has emerged as a major issue at the Asian summit in Brunei, held in the absence of President Barack Obama after he was forced to stay home due to the US gov-ernment shutdown.

With Asian countries like China sit-ting atop a mountain of Treasury bonds, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang expressed “Beijing’s concern about Washington’s debt-ceiling problem”.

Li conveyed that message in talks with Obama’s stand-in, US Secretary of State John Kerry, late Wednesday in Brunei, China’s official Xinhua news agency reported.

A US official travelling with Kerry confirmed Thursday that the debt ceiling was discussed, but downplayed Beijing’s concerns, saying Li had vowed contin-ued investment in the world’s largest economy.

“Secretary Kerry made clear that this is a moment in Washington politics and reaffirmed the president’s commitment

to resolving the issue,” the official told reporters.

“They also agreed that the United States has one of the strongest economies in the world and that they have a shared interest in continuing the close economic working relationship.”

China held $1.277 trillion in US debt as of July, according to Treasury Depart-ment figures.

Kerry and Li joined 16 other world leaders in Brunei on Thursday for the East Asia Summit -- the climax of nearly a week of top-level meetings which be-gan in Bali at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum’s annual gathering.

As he did in Bali, Kerry sought to as-sure Asian leaders in Brunei that Obama’s no-show did not signal wavering US interest to the region.

He stressed Washington’s “continued commitment to the region” and offered verbal support to allies wary of China’s territorial ambitions, according to a copy of his address to the summit.

Apart from reaching a budget deal to end a government shutdown, Congress must agree by October 17 to raise the $16.7 trillion US borrowing limit -- or risk a default on sovereign debt.

Failure to do so could see the United States default on its obligations for the first time in its history and spark what the White House warns will be dire global economic consequences.

Emerging economies -- which have already borne the brunt of recent market upheaval over the expected tapering of US monetary stimulus measures -- are particularly anxious to see a break-through.

“(If) the world’s biggest economy turns belly-up, how can you actually protect yourself?” Philippines President Benigno Aquino told reporters.

“But I don’t think that will happen.”With Obama absent from the Asia

summits, China has been free to wield its growing diplomatic and economic clout in the region.

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN - The United States sought to reassure Asian leaders gathered for an annual summit Thursday that Washington would resolve its political stalemate, after China voiced concern over a possible US debt default.

Rindik is one of the Balinese traditional musical in-struments. This musical instrument is very simple, but has a distinctive sound. Rustic, peaceful and prosper-ous atmosphere is depicted in the tones played. In the wedding reception, thanksgiving and other ceremonial events, rindik can become a choice of entertainment. At hotel lobby, this bamboo music is often played as a welcome music. In the performing session, rindik is usually played by three musicians. A player of lanang (female) instrument plays the selangsih tone and another plays wadon (female) instrument with a plain tone. Then, another plays a flute to give the sweet feel in every gamelan composition.

To play the blades of rindik requires a good concen-tration because both hands should be able to play the mallet (beater) with different tempo and composition. The beat of left hand sets the tempo, while the right hand plays kotekan in accordance with the rhythm of gamelan composition played. Sometimes it can be fast and tender. Uniform of the players is not too flossy. They usually wear fabric, saput, selempot, clothes and headdress. If the performance is intended for reception or a large ceremonial event, the uniform put on by players usually arranged beautifully like a dancer. A combination of colors and patterns has become a main thing. Sometimes, it is embellished with yellowish golden leaf.

Prof. Dr. I Wayan Dibia said the traditional musical instrument was estimated to origin from pejogedan art emerging in 1940s. Pejodegan art was the de-velopment of Joged Pingitan circa 1811. After the independence period, it then developed into Joged Bumbung having full expression and spontaneity. As a popular art, continued Dibia, rindik was very appropriate to be combined with dance movements having the formality space. At the beginning, the Joged Bumbung emerged as a sensual dance, but not erotic. “Well, in the later development Joged Bum-bung features erotic motion. As a result, it kindles an unfair judgment,” he said.

According to Dibia, we could not blame them (the joged dancers) alone. “Probably, it indicates if people are in severe stress or it also becomes the people’s demand today,” said the lecturer in the Indonesia Institute of Arts (ISI) Denpasar seriously. Similar opinion was also revealed by I Wayan Wendra. This man having composed dozens of gamelan musical art said the birth of rindik was predicted to come from the tingklik (bamboo blade musical instrument). Tingklik was estimated to have existed since 1930s. “The birth of rindik started when farmers were relax-ing while hitting galar (bamboo mat). As sounding fun, they were then given the tone to produce very melodious sounds,” he said.

The tingklik then used intact bamboo stuffed with resonance chamber to produce tender tone. Creativity of the Hindu community in Bali was high and then the rindik was combined with dance, so that it developed into jejogedan accompanying the Joged Bumbung dance. “Almost all the regions in Bali have this art. This musical instrument is very close to the life of farmers in Bali,” he said.To make rindik instrument, added Wendra, people used selected bamboo to gen-erate a nice tone. Other than being dry, the bamboo should also have a matching thickness. “A fanatic rindik player usually makes it from dry bamboo at place, not cleared it first before dried out,” he said.

According to him, every region in Bali has special day to present the offerings for the gamelan instru-ment. Meanwhile, each craftsman would not have dif-ferent ability. “People who can make the rindik have strong auditory tone of gamelan,” he said. (BTN)

Spokesperson of PT Angkasa Pura (AP) 1 of Ngurah Rai International Airport, Sherly Yunita, said the de-parture of a number of heads of state accompanied with the operation shut-down of some airlines with a total of 206 flights. “On Tuesday (Oct 8), 206 flights were cancelled, both the arriving and departing domestic and international flights,” said Sally. She added that after a temporary shut-down from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. for the presidential aircraft service of the APEC country members, the I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport began operating the new terminal for international departure.

“At 8 o’clock tonight (Wed/Oct 9), international passengers that will leave Bali can have enjoyed the con-venience of the new terminal. A total of 176 Jetstar passengers with flight

number JQ117 to Perth, Australia, are the first passengers departing from the new terminal,” she explained.

Meanwhile, she said the new ar-rival terminal would have 96 check-in counters, 26 immigration counters and 9 waiting rooms equipped with 11 passenger boarding bridges where the new terminal was capable of serving more passengers than the old terminal.

Earlier, President Director of Ang-kasa Pura, Tommy Soetomo, said the existing terminal only had a capacity of 7 million passengers per year. In the future, the terminal with double capacity would be able to serve 16 million passengers. “We are thankful because the transfer process of termi-nal tonight can run smoothly, orderly and safely,” he said.

He explained that passenger growth

rate within the past 6 years had reached 14 percent. His party was op-timistic that future growth in passen-ger number would continue to grow. Moreover, Indonesia had successfully hosted the APEC Summit. It would become a booster for the economic growth and tourism in Indonesia, especially in Bali. “And of course it will be a challenge for the Angkasa Pura Airport as the operator of the airport,” he said.

He appealed to all the passengers, hotels and travel agencies to pay atten-tion to the signs having been prepared and could maintain the orderliness and helped the smoothness of the passen-ger departure process.

“In order that this transfer process can run smoothly and orderly, we do request the participation and coopera-tion of all parties,” he said. (kmb27)

In a coordinated dawn operation, police stormed 60 clubhouses and properties simultaneously across Melbourne and its surroundings, following an escalating war be-tween rival motorcycle outfits that has sparked a spate of shootings with high-powered weapons. They seized guns, ammunition, explosive materials, drugs and cash.

The crackdown was launched after new anti-fortification laws came into effect on Sunday, which allow police to tear down barriers, cameras and booby traps at club facilities.

“If they’re affiliated with the Hells Angels, they’ve been target-ed,” Acting Deputy Commissioner Steve Fontana told reporters, add-ing that it was the largest operation on a single motorcycle gang in Victoria state’s history.

Thirteen people were arrested, including Hells Angels “sergeant-at-arms” Peter “Skitzo” Hewat. Fontana said the full extent of what had been seized would take time to determine as many of the properties were heavily fortified.

But he admitted that none of the “high-powered military-style weapons” fow which police had been searching had so far been found. “We’re determined to track them down,” he said.

“We’ve located a number of firearms, a large quantity of ammu-nition, we’ve located drugs, a large quantity of cash, but the investiga-tions and searches are still going (on).” At one property, so much ammunition was recovered that a truck was needed to take it away.

Fontana added that police were “extremely concerned about these

(high-powered) weapons”, which reports said were AK-47s or M1 carbines.

“We’re extremely concerned about the intel we’ve got about the tensions and the intentions of these clubs, and so we thought it necessary to make a pretty strong stance.”

Recent incidents involving biker gangs in Melbourne have included a tattoo parlour being sprayed with bullets, makeshift bombs -- which did not explode -- thrown at a gym, and shots fired at a Hells Angels clubhouse.

Biker gangs linked to organised crime, particularly drugs, are a growing problem across Australia, with a mass brawl on the Gold Coast last month prompting Queen-sland police to vow to kick them out of the state.

MOSCOW - Former U.S. spy agency contractor Edward Snowden’s father arrived in Moscow on Thursday to see his son, who was granted asylum in Russia after he leaked details of government surveillance programs and fled the United States. Speaking at the same Moscow airport where his fugitive son was stranded for weeks this summer, Lon Snowden said he had no direct contact with Edward Snowden but that he felt “extreme gratitude that my son is safe and secure and he’s free”.

The younger Snowden, 30, is wanted in the United States on espionage charges and Russia’s decision to grant him temporary asylum aggravated already tense relations between Moscow and Washington. Russian authorities and the Russian lawyer who is assisting Snowden, Anatoly Kucherena, have not disclosed his location.“I am not sure my son will be returning to the U.S. again. That’s his decision, he is an adult, he is a person who is responsible for his own agency,” Lon Snowden said, standing beside Kucherena at Shereme-tyevo airport. “I am his father, I love my son and I certainly hope I will have an opportunity to see my son,” Snowden said.

Edward Snowden was the source of disclosures about U.S. government surveillance that included details about a program that collected e-mails, chat logs and other types of data from companies such as Google Inc and Facebook Inc. “I really have no idea what his intentions are,” Lon Snowden said, citing his lack of direct contact with him.IBPO/afp

Jokowi, as the governor is popu-larly called, said the project would certainly increase traffic congestion and in view of that he urged PT MRT, the company carrying out the project, to inform the public of the impact.

“I have a request for PT MRT. Keep the public informed of the

impact of the construction project as it will certainly increase traffic congestion in Jakarta,” he said.

Meanwhile, he said he would encourage people to use public mass transport systems through various policies that he would issue to re-duce congestion.

“Once the MRT project is com-pleted, policies that support it would be issued. The Electronic Road Pricing system would be set up in all corridors to encourage people to use mass transport systems. A system of allowing cars with odd and even plate numbers to operate on certain days in certain corridors and the imposition of high parking fees and others would be carried out to encourage people to change their lifestyles,” he said.

PT MRT’s President Director Dono Boestami, meanwhile, said the first civil engineering task to be carried out is the construction of slopes.

“Slopes are constructed to strengthen earth walls and provide strong buffer for the construction work so that roads do not move or trigger landslides while the construc-tion process is underway,” he said.

The first phase of the MRT proj-ect would stretch 16 kilometres from Lebak Bulus to Hotel Indonesia, roundabout, consisting of a 9.8-kilometre-long elevated road from Lebak Bulus to Sisingamangaraja and a 5.9-kilometre-subway from Sisingamangaraja to Hotel Indone-sia, roundabout.

Top seed Djokovic cantered through his first set against Spain’s Marcel Granollers with the loss of only two games. But early in the second he pulled up in obvious discomfort and called for the ATP trainer, who applied heavy taping to his right foot and ankle.

Despite the medical treatment, the 26-year-old did not look in-convenienced as he returned to the court to seal a 6-2, 6-0 victory, hit-ting a total of 26 winners. “It was just an awkward movement. I was in an off-balance position. I was running and I made a quick move-ment that caused a sharp pain at that instant moment,” said Djokovic.

“But after the match we deter-mined that it’s nothing serious, so it’s all fine.” Federer, who has

slipped to seventh in the world rankings and faces a battle to qualify for next month’s World Tour Finals in London, won 6-4, 6-3 against Italian Andreas Seppi after a testing start.

The Swiss great, playing his first singles match since a disappointing US Open, lost his serve early but broke back immediately against the world number 22, repeating the feat to take the opening set. A single break in the second was enough to seal the match. Federer, who had a mixed bag of 19 winners and 29 unforced errors, said going a set up and then an early break up in the second set was key for him. “Even though it remained tough, Seppi did a good job of hang-ing around. That’s the kind of match you want in this particular situation

I’m in right now.”Nadal admitted he found the go-

ing tough early in his match against Dolgopolov. “In the beginning I couldn’t do anything. He was play-ing amazingly, hitting every ball very hard, playing winners from every place. The positive thing is that I resisted well at the begin-ning... But after that I think I played a great match,” he said.

YEONGAM , South Korea -- Sebastian Vettel heads into the weekend with a chance to repeat his 2011 feat of clinching the Formula One title in Japan with four races to spare - and join Michael Schu-macher and Juan-Manuel Fangio as the only men to win four-straight championships. To clinch the title at Suzuka, the German needs to win and have nearest rival Fernando Alonso finish worse than eighth.

The first part of the equation looks likely: The Red Bull driver has won the past four races, lead-ing after every lap in each of them. The second part is less likely with Alonso consistently finishing high up in the points, even if the Ferrari ace was an uncompetitive sixth in last weekend’s Korean Grand Prix.

“Vettel is a very long way off in terms of points, but above all in performance terms, and we can-not expect miracles between now and the end of the championship,” was Alonso’s frank assessment of Ferrari’s title chances after Korea. “Second place in the constructors’ championship is probably a more

Shanghai - Defending champion Novak Djokovic shrugged off an injury scare to win his Shanghai Masters opener on Wednesday, keeping alive the prospect of a mouthwatering quarter-final against Roger Federer. realistic target, but one thing’s certain, we are not giving up now and we will give it our best shot right to the very end.”

Vettel’s latter half of the season has been every bit as dominant as 2011, and it would be a fitting historical parallel if he again seals

the championship in Japan with four races up his sleeve. Only Schumach-er in 2002 (six) and Nigel Mansell in 1992 (five) had more races to spare in clinching a title. Asked about his opportunity to seal it in Japan, Vettel said: “We had the incredible chance, two years ago, to do so. We did it,

but there are still a lot of points to get, even though it looks very good for us. “The car is working ... it’s on the edge, to be honest, more so than you would probably think from the outside,” Vettel said.

The only edginess apparent to observers is how the Red Bull man-

ages its wearing tires in the closing stages of the race, but that is true of all teams this season on the Pirelli rubber.

Romain Grosjean, who stayed on Vettel’s tail through the first half of the grand prix in Korea when so many others have watched the Ger-man drive away into the distance, said he and teammate Kimi Raik-konen would have challenged the Red Bull in the closing stages if not for the two safety-car periods that allowed the German to nurse his tires for a few laps.

“’’It seems that every time there will be a battle with Seb, there’s a safety car coming,” Grosjean said. “The last stints would have been pretty epic without the safety car ... it would have been close.” Lotus looms as the main challenger to Red Bull this weekend, having shown improved form in Korea - its first race with a new, longer-wheelbase car.

With all teams now turning their resources toward designing their radically different 2014 cars with V6 turbo engines, and with only a one-week break between Korea and Japan, the pecking order of teams at Suzuka is likely to be very similar to that seen at Yeongam.

At present the complex is venerated and maintained by the people of Kapal, irrespectiv of their caste or kin group. It was Severly damaged during the earth-quake of 1917 and was restored by the Archaeological Survey in 1948-49. The leader of the team of Balinese craftsmen was I Made Nama and is said that the construction of the tall tower was quite a challenge for him and his men.

The forecourt of the temple is large and spacious. A big tree grows at the center. The temple complex is surround-ed by a wall of red brick constructed in the traditional way without mortar. By rubbing one stone agains the other, a fine powder crumbles from the surface lay-ers. When water is added to it, the stones can be simply stuck together.

A split gateway on the west side leads to the central courtyard. A second, closed gateway with a three-tiered roof on the west gives way to the inner court, in which 16 shrines are to be seen. Right in front of the gateway is the prasada and behind it a square pedestal with 54 little stone seats. These are shrines for

the satya, the servants, and facing them in one shrine together in the south are the three mekel satya, their leaders.

The following story is connected with them: A long time ago, when a king of Majapahit in East Java died, he was cre-mated and his ashes were carried by 54 men towards the sea in a bamboo tower (bukur) with a tiered roof. The tower was placed on a little boat (kapal), on which were seated the 54 followers (patih) of the deceased and three leaders (makel). The boat, however, was stranded at sea.

This episode has been transposed to the temple and is symbolized in the stone tower at the center and in the ped-estals with the 54 and 3 stone seats. The tower is in fact, a replica of the bamboo cremation structure. Close to it, to the south, is a shrine with an 11-tiered roof, called little garden with a pond” (taman). During the temple festival on Tumpek Kuningan, its ‘water’ is used to bathe the god of the tower. This is very convenient, because then a long tour outside the temple to a bathing place is not necessary.

Sada Temple

The rulers of Mengwi were famous for the temples they built. The oldest of these is Sada Temple, a few hundred meters south of the main road in Kapal, about 15 km to the northwest of Denpasar. The name sada may derive from the Old Java-nese and Sanskrit term prasada, meaning a tower temple. There is indeed a huge shrine in the shape of a tiered tower in the inner conrt. The local inhabitants call this temple a candi, meaning a funerary monument for a deceased king. According to the chronicles of the rulers of Mengwi, the son of the first Cokorda or Lord of Mengwi, I Gusti Agung Panji, received a shrine in this temple after his death around 1710. The divinity of the temple is Bhatara Jayengrat, the Divine World Conqueror.

The 25-year-old has been un-der pressure to prove his worth as a team player after he was booed off the pitch dur-ing last month’s La Liga victory over Athletic Bilbao. Benzema also went on the defence when he was quizzed about h is a t t i tude when playing with France as he has not scored an international goal for 16 months.

“What attitude?” he snapped on Wednesday when asked by reporters at France training facil-ity in Clairefontaine, near Paris, about the criticism he has faced. “Carlo Ancelotti did not say (that I was not working enough). He said that me and Angel Di Maria did not have the same share of defensive work.”

After the Bilbao game, Ance-lotti suggested Benzema could take a few pointers from the ener-getic and tenacious Di Maria, who was applauded by the fans.

LONDON — The English Football Association plans to s t rengthen the ru les a l low-ing it take retrospective action against players after Chelsea striker Fernando Torres escaped punishment for scratching an opponent.

The FA altered its laws be-

fore the new season to make it easier to take retrospective ac-tion using video evidence, but was unable to charge Torres for scratching Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen’s face in a Pre-mier League match last month because part of the incident was seen by a match official. Torres was booked for the clash, but the scratch was not fully seen.

FA chairman Greg Dyke says the fact no action was taken was “understandably baffling to everyone and has to be ad-dressed.”

Dyke was unhappy that the FA’s disciplinary department was in a position where “they don’t feel they have the authority to take action for what was an obvious scratch to the face.”

Ireland are all but eliminated in the race for a 2014 World Cup spot but they will not be bearing gifts when they face Group C leaders Germany on Friday, coach Joachim Loew said on Wednesday.

Germany need just two points from their last two games, including against Sweden in Stockholm on Oct. 15, to secure automatic qualification from the group and they plan to book their ticket to Brazil on Friday.

“Everyone who is here is fit and I have a good feeling,” Loew told a new conference, shrugging off the impact of more than a half dozen ab-sences through injury, including Lukas Podolski, Marco Reus and Ilkay Guendogan.

“Our aim is to qualify here at home against Ireland in a stadium we have always had good memories in.” He said, however, it would not be a repeat of their 6-1 win in Dublin last year.

“In Dublin we faced Ireland and caught them off guard. It was deserved but it won’t be the same this time. They can defend extremely well, they can be very organised.

“It does not matter who plays or who is their coach. It does not really affect their game. Ireland means defensively compact, maximum physical involvement, always high tempo.” Germany top the group on 22 points from eight games with Sweden five behind in second spot. Ireland are fourth on 11.

“They can defend really well. It’s part of their tradition, to defend their own goal, like in Gaelic football or rugby,” Loew said.

“They always fight until they fall over. It does not matter if they trail 1-0 or 3-0, even if they don’t have a chance or a very minimal of qualify-ing it does not mean they come with a gift for us.”

Loew also defended his decision to call up Bayern Munich’s Mario Goetze, despite the midfielder only recently recovering from injury.

“One could have decided differently. Leave him with the club. But I told (Bayern sports director) Matthias Sammer and (coach) Pep Guardiola that Mario will have four training sessions with us and if I need him for 15 or 20 minutes Mario can always shake things up,” he said.

Bayern president Uli Hoeness had said the new signing, who only last week came back from an ankle injury sustained in August, should not have been called up for international duty.

Croatian striker Andrej Kra-maric broke his country’s scoring record by netting eight times as top flight Rijeka thrashed third division Zmaj Blato 11-0 in a cup match on Wednesday. It was the highest scoring tally in a single match by a player in any national competition, surpassing the pre-vious record of six goals held by Dinamo Zagreb striker Duje Cop.

The Croatian Cup first round result was also the biggest do-mestic win for a Croatian club. The 22-year-old Kramaric was let go by champions Dinamo where he spent four difficult years in the first team after setting a club record by scoring more than 450 goals at various youth levels.

He showed his talent last season when he was loaned to city rivals Lokomotiva, netting 20 times in 45 appearances.

He scored a first-half hat-trick against Zmaj and added five in the second half as Rijeka, double cup winners in the former Yugoslavia and then Croatia, ran riot against the part-timers.

Bosnian Mehmed Alispahic scored twice and fellow midfielder Josip Brezovec added the other for Rijeka, who will meet another third division side, Podravina Ludbreg, for a spot in the last eight of the competition.

SAO PAULO — FIFA says it has received applications for nearly 5.5 million tickets for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, more than five times the number available in the first phase of sales.

Fans have until Thursday to place orders in the first phase of ticketing, when about 1 million are on offer. FIFA will hold a random draw for matches where the number of requests exceeds the available tickets. The second phase begins on Nov. 5 on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Brazilians made the majority of requests so far, followed by Americans, Argentines and Germans. Organizers expect a total of nearly 3.3 million tickets to be available for the tournament.

Most of the applications were for the opener in Sao Paulo and the final at Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro.

Benzema hits out at “unfair” criticism over poor work ethicReuters

PARIS - France striker Karim Ben-zema hit out at those who questioned his work ethic as he tried to play down Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelloti’s suggestion that he shies away from hard work.

“I t ’s not a question of at-

t i tude. You talk about attitude when

a player does not want to play football. But I walk on to the

pitch, I want to play football. “For example,

when I play for France... I run almost 10 kilometres

per game. It’s unfair because I do run.”

It was not clear on Wednesday whether he would get a chance to run at all when France host Aus-tralia in a friendly on Friday at Parc des Princes in Paris.

In last month’s Group I World Cup qualifier, De-schamps started Olivier Giroud up front in the 4-2 win over Belarus rather than Benzema. Benzema has scored 15 goals in 60 interna-tional appearances but none since June last year.

“It’s been the longest goal drought of my career but I work hard. It won’t last for 10 years. I have chances, I just need to con-vert them,” Benzema said.

“I don’t demand (to start). I’m happy to be with France. We’re a squad, there’s no first, second or third choice. The coach chooses. I’m a professional, if I’m called up I play, if I’m benched I sup-port the team.”

“I really have no idea what his intentions are,” Lon Snowden said, citing his lack of direct contact with him.IBPO/afp

could be carried out, and it is hoped the project would be completed by 2018,” said the governor at the groundbreaking ceremony at Dukuh Atas, Central Jakarta.

(kmb27)

(kmb28)

Hasnul SuhaimiFigure behind the success of “Future Leaders”

IBP/Eka Adhiyasa

Hasnul Suhaimi talked in front of young entrepreneurs during “APEC Unthinkable Week” at Kuta.

of PT Indosat in 2005.

(iah)

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful.

“We have registered a case against Ms Culpo and her team members after receiving a complaint,” Sushant Gaur told AFP from the tourism police station in Agra, 180 kilometres (112 miles) south of New Delhi.

“We have booked her under various sections... of India’s

Ancient Monuments and Ar-chaeological Sites and Re-mains Act,” he added.

Gaur said Culpo posed for photographers with branded shoes while sitting on the Diana Seat, a marble ledge in front of the white mausoleum named after the late British princess who visited in 1992.

“There are strict guidelines against any sort of branding and promotion at Taj Mahal and the photo shoot conducted was without any prior permis-sion,” said N.K. Pathak from the Agra unit of Archaeologi-cal Survey of India (ASI).

A case has also been reg-istered against Indian-born fashion designer Sanjana Jon who accompanied Miss Uni-verse to the site.

Registering a case is a pre-liminary step and the issue may not necessarily go to court.

Visitors must take off their

shoes while visiting the monu-ment, an Islamic mausoleum built for the late wife of Mu-ghal ruler Shah Jahan and completed in 1648. Footwear is allowed in the garden area where the Diana Seat is lo-cated.

Culpo’s office was not im-mediately available for com-ment.

The complaint was filed by the monument’s caretaker on behalf of the ASI, an of-ficial working for the state-run body told AFP on condition of anonymity.

He said she would face a fine if found guilty.

The Mumbai-based Mid-Day tabloid quoted Taj care-taker Munazzar Ali as saying Culpo’s modelling at the Taj amounted to “disrespect and insult”.

National carrier Malaysia Airlines said the Twin Otter pro-peller plane took off from Kota Kinabalu, the capital of Sabah state, but landed short of the runway in Kudat about 150 kilo-metres (94 miles) northeast.

“No reported fatalities as of now. Focus of the airline is on the rescue of passengers and crew,” it said in a state-ment less than two hours after the afternoon crash.

All those aboard the plane

were taken to Kudat Hospital for checkups. Newspapers said six of them were in-jured, including three in critical condition.
