Not only is Mered being inves- tigated for aiding illegal migration dating from 2012, but also on pos- sible charges related to banking fraud for the transfer of funds to pay for the smuggling, said prosecutor Maurizio Scalia. Authorities said he bragged about packing migrants tightly into boats to maximize his earnings, and that he forced family members to send tranches of money for a migrant to continue on each leg of the trip, which typically included a trip across Africa, the risky boat journey across the Mediterranean Sea and final transport to northern Europe. “This is a demonstration of how little these organizations and their bosses respect human life, the lives of all those desperate people who for various reasons attempt to reach Italy and Europe in the hope of a better life,” said Palermo chief prosecutor Francesco Lo Voi. Tapped telephone conversations indicated that Mered paid Libyan officials on several occasions to get migrants who had been detained by Libyan authorities released in groups of 20 at a time. In the wiretapped calls, Mered also indicated he was going to move to Sweden to join his wife as soon as he could arrange the proper documents. LOS ANGELES - When direc-tor Duncan Jones was tasked with translating the popular video game “Warcraft” into a studio film, he was inspired by filmmaker Peter Jackson’s adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy saga “Lord of the Rings.”

“Not everyone had read Tolkien who went and saw those films but (Jackson) crafted a film with inter-esting characters and a plot that’s engaged and people by the millions wanted to see more,” Jones told Reuters.

“Hopefully we’ve done the same with ‘Warcraft.’”

The film, out in U.S. theaters on Friday, brings an origin story of the fantasy world explored in the role-playing “World of Warcraft” gaming franchise from Activision

Blizzard Inc , which had 10 million subscribers as of November 2015.

Jones said that while he wanted to make a film that fans of the game would enjoy, he also wanted to introduce the world of “Warcraft” to newcomers and “make them come in and feel embraced by this fantasy setting that this film takes place in.”

“Warcraft” follows the battle between the monster-like Orcs as they try to colonize the human land of Azeroth, with magic playing a key role in the fight.

The film features mythical Orcs, dwarves, elves, wizard-esque ma-ges and trolls, much like “Lord of the Rings.”

Comcast Corp’s Universal Pic-tures and Legendary Pictures, a subsidiary of China’s Wanda Cin-

ema Line Corp , co-financed the film’s $160 million budget, with Universal distributing it globally except for China.

The film has already grossed $70 million internationally.

At the heart of the story is Sir Anduin Lothar (Travis Fimmel), and the Orc prisoner Garona (Paula Patton), who band together to fight against the Orcs, led by the ferocious, power-hungry Gul’dan (Daniel Wu).

“Whether you are a hard-core gamer like Rob (Kazinsky, co-star) is or you’re someone who never played the game like myself, you connect right off the bat to a strong compelling story and a character-driven story,” said actor Ben Sch-netzer, who plays talented young mage Khadgar. (rtr)

Sang Gede Purnama, a public health lecturer and researcher in the Faculty of Medicine.at Udayana University, explained that the number of dengue cases is predicted to rise in October due to the climatic influence of La Nina. Based on data from the na-tional weather service (BMKG), rain is expected to fall.through-out the year meaning there will not be a drought.

Dengue fever outbreaks can occur throughout the year because the dengue virus is transovarial meaning infection is passes from mosquitos to their eggs making it possible for areas that were pre-viously dengue free to suddenly experience an outbreak at any time of year as we saw happen in Gianyar, Klungkung, Bangli and Singaraja a few months ago.

“There will likely be another explosion of cases in October, November, December and Feb-ruary with the peak occuring in March”, he said. The dengue virus runs on a five year cycle and is influenced by seasons and dengue infected larvae can spread the virua in areas that were previously unafected. cases occur in five-year cycle and this year is the five-year cycle.

The research and development by the According to the Ministry

of Health ‘s Research and De-velopment data, the transovarial virus index shows 52 percent. “So, about 52 percent of the mosquitos in Bali are infected by the virus. Research involved capturing wild mosquitos and then breeding them in captivity. Although their offapring were not exposed to the dengue virus, they were still infected. This indivates a 50 percent chance of infection in the wild population. This makes it hard for us to get a handle on the virua becauae.mosquitoa do not have to come.in contact witht the virus themsleves but may carry it from birth. This is the reason for large outbreaks”, he explained.

Just imagine, if a mosquito hatches 200 eggs and 50 percent of them are been infected with dengue virus. There is also the problem that people who have been infected with dengue virus and are then expoaed to dengue virus 2 or 3, the illness can much more severe” he added.

All regions of Bali have the potential of seeing another serioua outbreak in October this year, but especially Denpasar, Badung and Gianyar where.the larvae density rate is over 50 percent. Although Denpasar has high larva free index (ABJ), due the population density and mobilty of people here, it is likely that debgue cases will still occur. “One of the most appropri-ate methods of anticipating an explosion of dengue cases is by

He said the decline in handi-craft products yielded by crafts-men in Bangli ranged from 10 to 30 percent. The declining amount of exports happened to almost all handicraft products. According to Suparta, other than caused by weakening purchasing power, the decline in the export value of handicrafts of Bangli residents is also caused by the development of similar products in other areas.

Responding to this condition,

his agency asked the craftsmen in Bangli to continuously in-novate and create products with the latest creations. As a result, consumers do not feel bored with the creations offered by crafters. “The craft produced may not be monotonous. Now, crafters should be able to produce var-ied products in order to remain survive,” he explained. He in the Cooperatives and SMEs Agency will also seek to boost promo-tional efforts so that the exports

could be increased. As previously reported, one of

“If the mosquito nests eradica-tion is not done regularly people can still take care of their sur-

WASHINGTON - Synthetic designer drugs, especially synthetic opioids like fentanyl implicated in the death of pop star Prince, pose an “unprecedented” threat for U.S. overdoses and deaths, especially among youth, the country’s top anti-drug official said on Tuesday.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administra-tion has been cracking down on synthetic drugs since they began gaining popularity in 2010. But because each newly designed drug needs to be separately banned through a “clunky and cumbersome” process, the prob-lem continues to spiral, DEA head Chuck Rosenberg told a U.S. Senate committee.

“For every one substance we’ve con-trolled, legislatively or administratively, there are 11 more out there that are uncon-trolled,” Rosenberg said.

“We’re playing catch-up, and we need your help.”

Among commonly used designer drugs in the United States are synthetic cannabi-noids that mimic marijuana, so-called bath salts that have effects similar to cocaine and methamphetamine and synthetic opioids including counterfeit painkillers.

Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein suggested creating a committee to decide how to classify new synthetic drugs as they appear on the market.

“To me, it’s like Zika, and there’s a lot of effort going on now to speed up research.

Here, we’ve got to speed up the ability to en-force,” Feinstein said at Tuesday’s hearing.

Rosenberg testified that the DEA has seen a particularly alarming rise in illicit use of the fentanyl, which a medical examiner recently identified as the drug that killed Prince.

More than 11 million people illegally consume prescription painkillers for non-medical purposes each year, and overdoses are likely to increase as fentanyl is introduced to that market, according to Rosenberg.

U.S. President Barack Obama earlier this year asked Congress for $1.1 billion in new funding over two years to expand treatment for users of heroin and prescription pain killers.

Fentanyl users typically first develop an addiction to prescription drugs, and then turn to fentanyl because it is cheaper, although fentanyl has a much higher potential for abuse and overdose.

Some illicit fentanyl distributors dis-guise the opiate as a prescription drug, said Michael Botticelli, the Obama administra-tion’s top drug policy adviser, at Tuesday’s hearing.

Botticelli said the administration supports legislation that would broaden prosecutors’ ability to cite sales strategies as evidence when prosecuting synthetic drug manufactur-ers, especially manufacturers who claim their drugs are not intended for human consump-tion but clearly market them as such. Fortunately, Thailand had launched a programme that year to provide antiretroviral (ARV) treatment and counselling for pregnant women with HIV, and her son was born free of the virus.

A decade later, she had a sec-ond son - this time, armed with knowledge about how to monitor the amount of HIV in her blood - her viral load - and the CD4 cells protecting her from infection. She was confident that he would not get sick.

“With my first child, I was scared, but with my second, I was not scared at all because I knew what my viral load and CD4 lev-els were, and he wouldn’t contract it,” Anya said by telephone while at sea fishing in eastern Chan-thaburi province.

The World Health Organiza-tion announced on Wednesday that Thailand has become the first Asian country to eliminate mother-to-child transmission of HIV and syphilis.

Elimination of transmission is defined as a reduction of transmis-sion to such a low level that it no longer constitutes a public health problem.

Last year, Cuba was the world’s first country to receive WHO vali-dation for eliminating mother-to-child transmission of HIV.

But Thailand, which is home to about 450,000 people living with HIV, is “the first with a large HIV epidemic to ensure an AIDS-free generation,” the WHO said in a statement.

“This is a remarkable achieve-ment for a country where thou-sands of people live with HIV,” Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh, the head of WHO for Southeast Asia, said in a statement.

“Thailand has demonstrated to the world that HIV can be de-feated,” she added.

UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé called the achieve-ment an important milestone in efforts to end the AIDS epidemic by 2030. (rtr)

MANGUPURA - The government of Badung through the Cooperatives, SMEs, Industry and Trade Agency continues to su-pervise the price. This effort is intended to maintain price stability during the fasting month until the next Eid Al-Fitr.

“Tomorrow (Tuesday—Ed) we will come down with the team to monitor in the field. This will be carried out routinely to control the market price volatility,” said the Head of the Badung Industry and Trade Agency, Ketut Karpiana, Monday (Jun. 6).

According to him, his agency has coordinated with the agencies coalesced into the regional inflation control team (TPID). Since entering the fasting month, the price of basic commodities, such as sugar, rice, oil, meat and others shows an increase.

“We have also conducted an evaluation with each agency in the TPID meeting. In terms of supplies we are safe, but the prices are fluctuating. Some are going down, while some others are rising. For instance, the price of shallot downs, but that of sugar rises,” he explained.

He said that the price of sugar at some traditional markets in Badung experienced a surge up to IDR 17,000 per kg. However, this surge can be reduced to IDR 16,000 kg by the market opera-tion at some markets.

“On that account, we will soon organize a market operation to suppress the price of basic commodities. For instance, before the market operation the price rose again to IDR 17,000 kg,” he said.

It is said that the market operation will be implemented at Kuta traditional market in cooperation with the management of PT Perusahaan Perdagangan Indonesia (Persero) as the supplier of sugar from central government. “Market operation has been implemented in Mengwi, Abiansemal and next week will be held in Kuta under coordination with the PPI,” he explained.

Karpiana added that the results of price monitoring in the field indicated the price fluctuation where the price of shallot was stable while that of chili dropped. After the market operation, the price of sugar was back to normal or stable around IDR 16,000. Then, related to unsafe goods, it has been inspected with security test by inviting the National Agency for Food and Drug Control (BPOM). (kmb27)

It was presented by the Economic Expert Staff for Tourism Area of the Ministry of Tourism, Husein Alaid-rus, at the opening ceremony of the Ulun Danu Beratan Festival, Sun-day (Jun. 5). He added that to reach such a tourist visit, the tourism po-tential owned needs to be managed responsibly, sustainably and used for the welfare of society.

Implementation of the events like the Ulun Danu Beratan Festival, according to Husein, is considered very much in line with the efforts to maximize the potential of tourism in Tabanan, especially to strengthen cooperation and to promote the tour-ism potential and cultural wisdom in order to support the achievement of

the domestic and the foreign tourist visit target.

The Head of the Tabanan Tourism Agency, Wayan Adnyana, said that to increase the number of tourist visit to Tabanan, other than holding the Ulun Danu Beratan Festival, his agency will also hold another festival. “This year we’ve submitted seven propos-als to the Ministry of Tourism related to the implementation of event. Two events will be held this year namely the Ulun Danu Beratan Festival and Food Festival,” said Adnyana.

He added that the other proposals are being studied such as the imple-mentation of agro-tourism festival, fishing festival on the coast, coffee picking festival, Jatiluwih scarecrow

competition and Tanah Lot Arts and Culture Festival. Implementation of the tourism events, according Ad-nyana, certainly cannot be done by the Tourism Office alone, but must be supported by all the agencies. “For the agrotourism festival, it will require the cooperation with the Ag-riculture Agency,” said Adnyana.

According to Adnyana, the Min-istry of Tourism is willing to pro-vide assistance with sharing funding from the district government. “At the same time, this answers the challenge for Tabanan in terms of tourism event held at least for three times a year in order to increase the number of tourist visit,” said Adnyana. TABANAN - The government is targeting foreign tourist visit in Indonesia to reach 12 million and 260 million domestic travels with the target of foreign exchange earnings of about IDR 172.8 trillion and provide job opportunities for around 11.7 million people. In the meantime, the tourist arrival until April 2016 passing through the Ngurah Rai Airport has reached 1,446,363 foreign travelers, an increase of 17.19 percent from 2015 in the same month amounting to 1,234,153.

The U.S. assessment came a day after the U.N. nuclear watch-dog said it had “indications” that Pyongyang has reactivated a plant to recover plutonium from spent reactor fuel at Yongbyon, its main nuclear complex.

The latest developments sug-gest North Korea’s reclusive regime is working to ensure a steady supply of materials for its drive to build warheads, despite tightened international sanctions after its fourth nuclear test in January.

The U.S. official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that Washington is worried by the new

plutonium reprocessing effort, but he offered no explicit word on any U.S. response.

“Everything in North Korea is a cause for concern,” the official told Reuters.

“They take the spent fuel from the 5 megawatt reactor at Yong-byon and let it cool and then take it to the reprocessing facility, and that’s where they’ve obtained the plutonium for their previous nuclear tests. So they are repeating that process,” the official said. “That’s what they’re doing.”

North Korea, which conducted its fourth nuclear test in Janu-ary, vowed in 2013 to restart all

nuclear facilities, including the main reactor and the smaller plant at Yongbyon, which was shut down in 2007 as part of an international disarmament-for-aid deal that later collapsed.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which has no ac-cess to North Korea and mainly monitors its activities by satellite, said last year it had seen signs of a resumption of activity at Yong-byon.

IAEA chief Yukiya Amano told a news conference in Vienna on Monday that there have been indications of renewed pluto-nium reprocessing activities at Yongbyon. Reprocessing involves extracting plutonium from spent reactor fuel, one route to obtain-ing bomb fuel other than uranium enrichment. (rtr)

SYDNEY - Tourists, expats and business owners in Papua New Guinea joined locals in hunker-ing down for a night of potential violence amid fears of “payback” against the nation’s police force after it opened fire on a group of students, wounding several.

“This is going to get worse be-fore it gets better,” Greg Anderson, executive director of the Papua New Guinea Chamber of Mines and Petroleum said from Port Moresby, where a protest against the government of Prime Minister Peter O’Neill erupted on Wednes-day. “Incidents like this trigger paybacks, which could easily spiral out of control.”

Papua New Guinea, off Austra-lia’s north coast, remains largely undeveloped and many of its seven million tribal people still adhere to traditional customs. Payback, or retribution for an offence against a clan member, remains wide-spread.

Andrew Johnston, a documen-tary maker who has lived in Port Moresby for 28 years, said the town was in gridlock and he had retreated to his home for safety after witness-ing the father of one of the severely wounded students rallying a crowd outside the hospital.

“He told the crowd of very angry students and other relatives that he was going to cut off the head of Pe-ter O’Neill and hold it up in the air on a plate,” Johnston told Reuters. “The crowd roared.”

Dozens of people were wounded

on Wednesday when police opened fire on a student demonstration in the capital and riots spread to other cities across the country, officials and residents said.

Virgin Australia turned back a flight from Brisbane to Port Mo-resby amid reports of the violence and Qantas Airways cancelled one of its flights. Both carriers said they would continue to assess the situ-ation before deciding whether to resume flights on Thursday.

Even at the best of times, Port Moresby is one of the most violent cities in the region, with gangs of “raskols” blamed for a high number of rapes and murders.

Australia’s Department of For-eign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), which routinely warns of “high lev-els of serious crime” and a “general atmosphere of lawlessness”, updat-ed its travel advice on Wednesday, telling tourists to exercise a high degree of caution in Port Moresby and avoid large crowds.

PNG Police Minister Robert Atiyafa warned that “opportunists who are intent on burning build-ings, smashing cars and assaulting students who do not want to protest, will be arrested and charged.”

Atifya, who did not address the earlier incidents where po-lice opened fire, said police had received reports of university buildings and houses being set on fire and police and private vehicles damaged. However, he said the situation had calmed in the capi-tal. (rtr)

According to the Operations Director of ITDC, A.A. Ngurah Wirawan on Tuesday, the num-ber of Chinese tourists reached around 40 percent of total tourists that visited ITDC. “Chinese now dominates and is steadily increas-ing. But the market is most prob-lematic with the language because they rarely speak English. So it is natural that we begin to pro-vide Chinese travelers something more,” he explained.

To that end, ITDC held Mandarin language training for traders, mas-seuse and even a security guard in the ITDC. With a course that lasted two months, is expected that Chi-nese tourists will no longer get lost because of language barriers.

“Many Chinese tourists were lost to found a place such as toilets, beaches and even his hotel when they vacation in the ITDC. We

cannot help them because of the language barrier,” he said.

Mandarin courses will be held for 2 months involving dozens of traders, the masseurs and secu-rity guards. “I want the guards and employees also included in this program. Because they are also the most frequent to be asked by tour-ists when they lost,” he said.

As ITDC officials, Wirawan also does not want to be outdone by the traders in the region. He did not shy participated in the Mandarin language training. “Learning a foreign language is very pleasant. I also want to speak Mandarin, even though only basic conversa-tion. Travelers of any nation in the world will be very happy and feel appreciated if there were locals who can speak their mother tongue although a little. It will surely raise the region’s image in the eyes of the

Chinese travelers,” he added. The participants will be trained

by two coaches who are all sup-ported by the ITDC. He said if traders are able to communicate in Mandarin, they could more easily communicate and sell their prod-ucts. “It will also be an added value to the merchants and help us as well. We are also using this kind of activ-ity to bring us closer to the people around the area,” he said.

Mandarin language training is getting a positive response from traders and masseurs in the region. There are 51 people registered from a group of SMEs in the ITDC. Yasa Segara Beach Bengiat Community (11 people), Society of Paninsula Nusa Dua Beach (10 people), the Society of Sekar Sari Nusa Dua Beach (15 people), the Society of Sekar Jepun Turkish Samuh (5 persons), the Society of Sekar Sandat Turkish Samuh (15 people), “We are very pleased to joined this training,” said Chair-man of the Yasa Segara Beach Bengiat Community, Nyoman Sadnya. DENPASAR - The large tidal waves of the past few days have caused damage to a number of public facilities on Bali’s beaches. Strong waves at Sanur for example damaged the sea walls in this tourist area. Many fear that if repairs are not made immediately, more severe damage may result.

Headman of Sanur Kaja, I Made Sudana Yasa, when met on Tuesday (Jun. 7) said that the rising seawa-ter of the past few days damaged a number of coastal revetements, especially those that jut out to sea, like the one in front of Bali Beach Hotel.

The strong pounding waves also damaged the pile of limestone used to make as a dike to hold back the flow of seawater.

“There were also strong waves

in the tenth month of the Balinese calendar, (April), but this is the first time since then that the wave have been so big” he said.

Relevant agencies have already been contacted about making re-pairs to the revetments, including the Bali-Penida River Agency who were contacted verbally .“Since their office is located in Sanur, we conveyed this to them verbally,” he said.

As reported previously, tidal waves have been occuring since Sunday, June 5th, inudating sev-eral beaches on the island. In Kuta, seawater has even spilled on the road located some diatance from the beach. A number of beaches in Gianyar and other places in Bali have experienced similar condition. (kmb12)

PONTIANAK - Mayor of Pontianak Sutarmidji suspects that the Malaysian authorities are neglecting a large number of attempts to smuggle drugs into West Kalimantan.

“They say that Malaysia has advanced equipment, but then how can drugs in such large quantities be able to enter West Kalimantan by passing undetected through their official border checkpoints,” Sutarmidji stated here on Tuesday.

Sutarmidji questioned how such large quantities of drugs could be smuggled out of Malaysia, even though it possessed highly sophisticated detection equipment. “It could have been carried out for political reasons in order to weaken Indonesia. The matter should be raised with the Malaysian side,” Sutar-midji remarked.

Sutarmidji suspected that Malaysians were deliberately im-porting drugs in large quantities. “It can still be understood if the drugs were smuggled through illegal routes, but instead they are coming through border checkpoints,” the mayor pointed out.

Malaysian Consulates Liaison Officer of the Malaysian Police in Pontianak ASP Muhammad Ibrahim had earlier noted that the border between Sarawak, Malaysia, and West Kalimantan, Indonesia, was vulnerable to drug smuggling.

“The issue of drug smuggling through border checkpoints is not only a problem in Indonesia, especially in Kalimantan, but also a serious concern for the Malaysian government,” Ibrahim affirmed.

Ibrahim pointed out that the two countries still lacked sophis-ticated facilities to detect drugs, especially to foil smuggling attempts made through border checkpoints.

“We are constantly coordinating with the office in Kuching, and if anyone is found to be involved in drug trading activities, then we need to get to the bottom of this matter seriously, either in West Kalimantan or in Kuching,” Ibrahim emphasized.

The state of Sarawak is one of the transit points for drugs before they are sent out. Drugs are mostly shipped through boats, which originate from neighboring countries, especially in Southeast Asia.

“Narcotics cases in Malaysia are handled seriously, and the possession of merely five grams of drugs alone can lead to the imposition of a death penalty,” Ibrahim added. (ant)

JAKARTA - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) detained former speaker of the Riau Legislative Assembly Johar Firdaus after eight hours grilling on charge of corruption.

Johar, who was speaker of the regional legislative assembly in the 2009-2014 period was charged with

accepting bribe to smooth debate on regional budget in 2014. His lawyer Razman Arif Nasution said he pro-posed that the trial should be made in Jakarta instead of Pekanbaru, to prevent intervention.

Razman also said he wanted the court investigations should be expanded by also questioning a

number of other regional officials and lawmakers.

On Tuesday, KPK investigated Regent of Rokan Hulu Suparman and Johar as graft suspects. They are accused of receiving bribe from former Riau Governor Anas Maamun, who is now serving jail term. (ant)

JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo has yet to decide who will replace Gen. Badrodin Haiti, set to retire on July 24, as the national police chief. “I have not yet decided who to nominate as the new national police chief to replace Gen. Badrodin Haiti, who is set to retire on July 24,” Joko Widodo said here on Tuesday night.

President Joko Widodo was yet to receive a recommendation let-ter containing the names of two candidates, namely Budi Gunawan and Budi Waseso. The President has not yet decided the criteria to select the police chief.

Earlier, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) had let it be known that he was still considering feedback from various parties about the candidates and also studying the possibility of extending the term of the outgoing police chief, General Badrodin Haiti.

“For sure, I will listen to the feedback from the National Police (Polri), the National Police Commission (Kompolnas), and the community. Certainly, while making a decision, I will abide by the existing rules and laws,” Jokowi stated here on Tuesday.

The government has not made any decision on whether to replace or extend the term of General Haiti, he remarked. The president claimed he had not received a proposal for candidature from Kom-polnas.(ant)

Muslim devotees wait to break their fast at the Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta, Indonesia, Tuesday, June 7, 2016. Muslims around the world are in the first week of Ramadan, the holiest month in the Islamic calendar, where they refrain from eating, drinking, smoking and having sex from dawn to dusk.

The quarterly rate of growth was raised to 0.5 percent from 0.4 per-cent. The latest data showed private consumption, the biggest contribu-tor to growth, rose 0.6 percent in January-March, compared with an earlier estimate of 0.5 percent.

Economists expect the economy to slow in the current quarter, and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, facing a parliamentary election in July, judged the situation bleak enough to justify pushing back a planned April 2017 increase in the sales tax by two and a half years, to October 2019.

“While an improvement in busi-ness investment is positive for the economy, the strength of the Japa-nese yen and weak foreign demand may lead businesses to be more cau-tious about spending,” Bernard Aw of IG said in a commentary.

“Moreover, the relatively flat output compared to a year ago points toward an economy which is not doing well,” he said.

Abe has sought to spur growth by injecting massive sums of money into the economy through central bank asset purchases and govern-

ment spending, with mixed suc-cess.

Inflation remains far from the of-ficial target of 2 percent, partly due to weak oil prices and partly due to sluggish domestic demand. A recent strengthening in the value of the yen against the dollar is meanwhile eroding corporate profits of the many Japanese companies whose business is mainly done overseas.

Such underlying weaknesses mean the Bank of Japan will likely need to expand its asset purchases further in coming months, said Mar-cel Thieliant of Capital Economics. “For now, policymakers are facing a number of headwinds,” he said in a note.

The government is due to pro-pose up to 10 trillion yen ($93 bil-lion) in extra stimulus spending in the coming months. (ap)

CARACAS — Until recently, Julio Noguera worked at a bakery. But he now spends his evenings searching through the garbage for food.

“I come here looking for food because if I didn’t, I’d starve to death,” Noguera said as he sorted through a pile of moldy potatoes. “With things like they are, no one helps anyone and no one gives away meals.”

Across town, unemployed people converge every dusk at a trash heap on a downtown Caracas sidewalk to pick through rotten fruit and veg-etables tossed out by nearby shops. They are frequently joined by small business owners, college students and pensioners — people who consider themselves middle class even though their living standards have long ago been pulverized by triple-digit inflation, food shortages and a collapsing currency.

Venezuela’s poverty had eased during the administration of the late President Hugo Chavez. But a study by three leading Caracas universities found that 76 percent of Venezuelans are now under the poverty line, compared with 52 percent in 2014.

Staples such as corn flour and cooking oil are subsidized, cost-

ing pennies at the strongest of two official exchange rates. But fruit and vegetables have become an unaffordable luxury for many Venezuelan families.

“We’re seeing terrible sacrifices across many sections of society,” said Carlos Aponte, a sociology professor at the Central University of Venezuela. “A few years ago, Venezuela didn’t have the kind of extreme poverty that would drive people to eat garbage.”

While some search through the garbage piles for food they can eat, many more are drawn by the opportunity to fetch a few bolivar bills by rescuing and reselling bruised produce. On a recent eve-ning, Noguera managed to retrieve a dozen potatoes.

“I’m a trained baker, but right now there’s no work anywhere here. So I make do with this,” he said. The trash pickers aren’t just people who’ve lost their jobs.

Jhosriana Capote, a vocational student, comes to the trash heap to supplement her pantry. She recently completed an internship with a Coca-Cola subsidiary.

“I used to be able to find food, but not anymore. Everything is lines,” she said after an evening picking through the refuse. (ap)

TOKYO — Japan’s economy expanded at a 1.9 percent an-nual pace in January-March, helped by sustained consumer demand, according to revised data issued Wednesday. The government earlier estimated the world’s third-largest economy grew at annualized rate of 1.7 percent. It said the improvement was mainly due to a better-than-expected level of corporate investment.

LONDON - Senior British politicians have called for voter registration for the June 23 referendum on EU membership to be reopened after a government website crashed shortly before the deadline on Tuesday night, hampering some people’s ef-forts to register.

The deadline passed at midnight (2300 GMT), and half a million people registered online on the final day, accord-ing to a government website that provides data on the voter registration system.

But at 11:35 p.m., the Cabinet Office, the government de-partment in charge of the issue, tweeted that it was aware of an issue with the website, which was due to unprecedented demand, and was working to resolve it.

Minutes later, it tweeted an apology to those experiencing problems, urging them to keep trying as some people were still getting through.

Almost an hour after the official deadline, it tweeted that the issue had been fixed, without specifying whether any ap-plications received after midnight would be valid.

Jeremy Corbyn, leader of the opposition Labour Party, said on Twitter: “I’m told (the official website) has crashed so people can’t register to vote for #EUreferendum. If so, deadline has to be extended.”

He was one of several high-profile politicians making similar calls.

Asked whether some people had been unable to register on time, a Cabinet Office spokeswoman said: “We tried to resolve cases where people tried to register but were not able to.” She gave no further details.” (rtr)

The former first lady, U.S. sen-ator and secretary of state spoke to supporters at a raucous event in Brooklyn, New York, and placed her achievement in the context of the long history of the women’s rights movement.

“Thanks to you , we have reached a milestone,” Clinton said in a speech. “We all owe so much to who came before.”

Clinton, 68, appealed to sup-porters of party rival Bernie Sand-ers, 74, to join her campaign. She said Democrats had been bolstered by his campaign for eradicating income inequality, which has commanded huge crowds and gal-vanized younger voters. Not yet ready to concede, Sanders vowed to fight on.

Clinton also harshly attacked Donald Trump, 69, her presump-tive Republican rival in the Nov. 8 presidential election, for using divisive rhetoric that belittled

women, Muslims and immigrants. She took specific aim at his con-demnation of an Indiana-born judge of Mexican heritage.

“The stakes in this election are high and the choice is clear. Don-ald Trump is temperamentally un-fit to be president and commander-in-chief,” Clinton said.

“When Donald Trump says a distinguished judge born in Indi-ana can’t do his job because of his Mexican heritage, or he mocks a reporter with disabilities, or calls women pigs, it goes against every-thing we stand for,” she said.

A Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Tuesday showed Clinton lead-ing Trump by 10 percentage points nationally as they launch their general election battle, little changed from a week earlier.

Clinton edged Sanders out in a rough-and-tumble battle that stretched over four months and 50 states. She won support, especially

among older voters, with a more pragmatic campaign focused on building on the policies of her fel-low Democrat, President Barack Obama.

Obama called both Clinton and Sanders on Tuesday. The White House said he congratulated her on securing the delegates neces-sary to clinch the nomination and would meet Sanders on Thursday at Sanders’ request.

CNN and NBC projected Clin-ton would win in California. With about two-thirds of the votes counted, Clinton led Sanders 56 percent to 43 percent, avoiding what would have been an embar-rassing loss in America’s most populous state. The California win came on the heels of a decisive win in New Jersey and narrower vic-tories in New Mexico and South Dakota in Tuesday’s nominating contests. Sanders won Montana and North Dakota. High-speed cameras, pointed at the driver and taking frames every 100th of a second, were installed in cars at the start of the year and provided detailed information about Fernando Alonso’s Australian Grand Prix crash in March.

Drivers’ radio earpieces now also incorporate tiny accelerom-eters, wired through to the car’s electronic control unit, that measure the forces the head is subjected to in any impact.

Laurent Mekies, the General Manager Research for the govern-ing FIA’s Global Institute, said that there was more to come.

Biometrics, gathering data such as a driver’s heart rate, body heat

and sweat levels, were the next step.

“I hope that we will be able to put something on a driver before the end of the season, at least in a test,” he told the latest edition of the FIA’s Auto magazine.

“Biometric data will help us to assess the driver’s conditions before, at the time of the crash and after the crash as far as the rescue operations are concerned.”

Mekies said plans to introduce a cockpit head protection system next season, with a so-called ‘halo’ device favoured, also offered the opportunity to place additional cameras above the driver.

Safety belts could also be used to

help estimate the loads on a driver’s upper body.

In the case of Alonso’s crash at the Melbourne season-opener, the high-speed camera footage showed the Spaniard’s helmet made contact with the left inside of the headrest twice during the impact.

The McLaren, which hit the Haas of Mexican Esteban Guti-errez at 305kph at the point of impact, recorded a lateral decel-eration of 46G after digging into the gravel and being thrown into the air.

Alonso walked away but missed the subsequent race in Bahrain.

The FIA said it was the first time that all of the new safety measure-ment systems had been brought together to provide “a forensic picture of what happens to the driver and the car during a major accident.” (rtr)

Colombia became the first team to secure advance-ment to the knockout stage of the tournament with stellar goaltending from David Ospina and another dynamic performance from Rodriguez, who shook off a shoulder problem that made his availability a game-time decision at the Rose Bowl.

The Real Madrid midfielder propelled Colombia to its second win in two matches, following the 2-0 victory over the United States last week in which Rodriguez was injured.

“With (Rodriguez) being such a great star with so much transcendence and desire, we had to be very prudent, but we never wrote him off,” Colombia coach Jose Pekerman said through a translator. “Not until this morning did we realize he was well and he could play. We’re lucky he recuperated quite well.”

Victor Ayala scored Paraguay’s first goal of the Copa America in the 71st minute on a long shot past Ospina, who still made a handful of jaw-dropping saves to keep Los Cafeteros in control.

Despite a few defensive struggles, the world’s third-ranked team has lived up to its billing so far stateside with a fluid, attacking game built around Rodriguez.

After Carlos Bacca scored on a header from Rodriguez’s corner kick in the 12th minute, Rodriguez found the net with an exceptional shot after a long scramble in the box in the 30th minute.

Paraguay was much better in the second half, but Ospina stopped everything except Ayala’s excep-tional long strike.

“We got the result we want-ed, and that always gives us great confidence in what we’re doing,” Pekerman said. “It’s clear to me that we had a great first half, and Paraguay had a great second half. We had to up our game. Paraguay made us quite uncomfortable.”

Colombia wraps up group play against Costa Rica in Houston on Saturday, while Paraguay travels to Philadelphia to face the Americans. Paraguay must beat the home team to stay in contention for advance-ment.

“It took us a little while to get going,” Para-guay coach Ramon Diaz said through a translator. “I think we respected them a little too much. ... Our team needs to remember what we did in the second

half, because we can do it again (against the U.S.).”Paraguay will have to win this weekend without mid-

fielder Oscar Romero, who was sent off with his second yellow card in the 81st minute. Diaz was furious with Brazilian referee Heber Lopes’ decision. “We hope the refs don’t make as many mistakes as they did today,” Diaz said. “Romero is one of the better players of the tournament.”

Paraguay tested Colombia’s defense throughout an entertaining game, but La Albirroja don’t have a player with the skills of Rodriguez — or the reflexes of James’ brother-in-law, Ospina.

After Bacca put Colombia ahead with another goal in his strong run of recent play, Rodriguez showed off his skill with his team-leading 16th goal for Los Cafeteros. Surrounded by defenders, Edwin Cardona tipped the ball outside to the charging star, and Rodriguez slotted a pinpoint shot into the far corner of the net.

Ospina, the Arsenal backup, made a fingertip save in first-half injury time to deflect Dario Lezcano’s short

free kick off the crossbar. He was even better in the second half with a flying, one-handed deflection of a header in traffic.

But Ospina could do nothing against Ayala, who trimmed Colombia’s lead and made the final minutes uncomfortable.

Paraguay’s task became tougher when Romero was sent off in the 81st minute, getting his second

yellow card in three minutes after a defensive sequence in which he pulled roughly on

EVIAN-LES-BAINS — Germany coach Joachim Loew has called up Bayer Le-verkusen defender Jonathan Tah to replace the injured Antonio Ruediger at the Eu-ropean Championship.

The 20-year-old Tah, who made his only Germany ap-pearance on March 26 in the 3-2 friendly loss to England in Berlin, was not included in Loew’s preliminary list of 27 players for the tourna-ment in France, but he was

given the nod Wednesday after Ruediger tore a cruciate ligament in his right knee in training on Tuesday.

The 23-year-old Ruediger is expected to miss about six months after sustain-ing the injury in a tussle with Thomas Mueller. The Roma defender had been first choice to fill in for Mats Hummels, struggling with a calf injury and unlikely to feature in any of the group games.(ap)

Lower-league footballers can take inspiration from players like Leicester City forward Jamie Vardy, who plied his trade in various tiers of the game prior to his England call-up for Euro 2016, Northern Ireland striker Conor Washington has said.

Vardy, who started his career at non-league sides Stocksbridge Park Steels and FC Halifax before moving

from League One club Fleetwood Town to Leicester in 2012, scored 24 Premier League goals during the side’s title-winning season.

Washington, who joined Queens Park Rangers from Peterborough United in January, also hailed the im-pact of fellow lower-league graduates Charlie Austin of Southampton and Andre Gray, who inspired Burnley to

England’s top flight this year.“Vardy is definitely an inspiration.

You’d be silly to say otherwise really,” Washington told British media.

“People like him, Charlie Austin, who left QPR before I arrived, Andre Gray, who’s doing unbelievably at Burnley, they’ve opened a lot of doors for players like myself. “The lower leagues are being respected more

now and people are starting to realise that with a bit of coaching here and there, they can mould international footballers like Vardy.”

MADRID — Spain lost 1-0 to Georgia at home on Tuesday in its final warmup before heading to France to defend its European Cham-pionship title. Spain dominated from the start but failed to capitalize on its scoring chances, while Georgia took its only significant chance, following a blunder by Spain’s defense.

Midfielder Tornike Okriashvili scored the winner in the 40th after a bad pass by Jordi Alba led to a counterattack.

It was the first time coach Vicente Del Bosque had all of his players available, including the four from Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid who joined late because they played in the Champions League final last month.

Del Bosque made several changes to the squad but it was not enough to overcome Georgia’s tight defense.

It was the third warmup for Spain, which was coming off a 3-1 win over Bosnia and a 6-1 rout of South Korea. Tuesday’s game was the

only one at home in the team’s final preparations before going to France, and a few jeers were heard after the final whistle.

“We have an extraordinary chal-lenge ahead of us,” Del Bosque said. “We can’t let this result affect us.”

Del Bosque used a team similar to the one expected to start in Group D against the Czech Republic on Mon-day in Toulouse. The only surprise was the inclusion of Real Madrid forward Lucas Vazquez, who made his first international appearance with the national team. Andres Iniesta came into the match at halftime.

“They didn’t give us any space,” Del Bosque said. “With Iniesta we cleared some lines and understood the game a little better. We lacked the final scoring touch.”

Del Bosque said he still hasn’t decided who will start in goal in France, but it was David De Gea instead of Iker Casillas who got to play on Tuesday.

Spain was in control when Alba

made a wayward pass to Sergio Ramos at the back, leading to a fast breakaway that culminated with Okriashvili’s easy goal from close range. The midfielder appeared to be offside when he scored, but it was a close call.

One of Spain’s best chances came when Vazquez set up Thiago Alcantara for a low shot that struck the far post in the 28th. In the second half, “La Roja” came close to scor-ing when Manuel “Nolito” Agudo unleashed a dangerous shot that went wide, while the final opportunity was Gerard Pique’s header in the 87th, which also just missed.

After playing the Czech Republic, Spain will face Turkey on June 17 in Nice and Croatia on June 21 in Bordeaux.

Spain won the last two European Championships and will be trying to regain its soccer supremacy after a disappointing elimination early in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.(ap)

Rodriguez’s jersey and wrapped both arms around Guillermo Celis.

“I think we respected them a little too much,” Diaz said. “We were very close to tying up the game. (The players) are actually quite angry and disappointed, because there was such a difference between the first half and the second half.”

(ant)

Badrodin Haiti, set to retire on July 24, as the national police chief. “I have not yet decided who to nominate as the new national police chief to replace Gen.

The U.S. assessment came a day after the U.N. nuclear watch-dog said it had “indications” that Pyongyang has reactivated a plant to recover plutonium from spent reactor fuel at Yongbyon, its main nuclear complex.

(kmb12)

“If the mosquito nests eradica-tion is not done regularly people can still take care of their sur-

Medhane Yehdego Mered, a 35-year-old Eritrean, was flown to Rome overnight from Sudan, where he was arrested two weeks ago, a little more than a year after authori-ties identified him as a prime suspect along with an Ethiopian-born Ermias Ghermay, who remains at large.

“The suspect facing justice is a character without scruples and without any respect for human life; an individual who occupies a key role in the operational center of a

criminal network that moves mil-lions of euros,” a chief investigator for Italy’s national police force, Renato Cortese, told a news confer-ence in Palermo on Wednesday.

Not only is Mered being inves-tigated for aiding illegal migration dating from 2012, but also on pos-sible charges related to banking fraud for the transfer of funds to pay for the smuggling, said prosecutor Maurizio Scalia.

Authorities said he bragged about

packing migrants tightly into boats to maximize his earnings, and that he forced family members to send tranches of money for a migrant to continue on each leg of the trip, which typically included a trip across Africa, the risky boat journey across the Mediterranean Sea and final transport to northern Europe.

“This is a demonstration of how little these organizations and their bosses respect human life, the lives of all those desperate people who for various reasons attempt to reach Italy and Europe in the hope of a better life,” said Palermo chief prosecutor Francesco Lo Voi.

Tapped telephone conversations indicated that Mered paid Libyan

officials on several occasions to get migrants who had been detained by Libyan authorities released in groups of 20 at a time. In the wiretapped calls, Mered also indicated he was going to move to Sweden to join his wife as soon as he could arrange the proper documents. He also was looking to build a house in Eritrea and make investments in Dubai.

Italy has arrested dozens of smuggling suspects, typically peo-ple who captain the rickety boats and maintain order on the crowded decks. While they try to blend in as migrants when rescued, prosecu-tors have had increasing success getting migrants to identify their smugglers.

Premier Matteo Renzi on Wednesday put the number of migrants arriving in Italy this year at 48,000, compared with 51,000 the same time last year. “The de-mographic pressure continues to push on Africa and the emergency is not letting up,” Renzi said in a Facebook post.(ap)

(rtr)
