People have reported vomiting, diarrhoea and other symptoms of food poisoning after eating products including pizza and lasagne made by a subsidiary of Maruha Nichiro Holdings, the nation’s largest seafood firm. The number of people affected by the tainted food has now risen to over 1,000, with more than 200 taken ill in the northern main island of Hokkaido alone, Jiji said. In western Osaka prefecture, a nine-month- old baby was hospitalised with vomiting on Monday after eating a product called creamy corn croquettes, the report said. Police began investigating the company last month after it revealed some of its frozen food had been tainted with malathion, an agricultural chemical often used to kill aphids in corn and rice fields. Detectives are looking at the possibility that the pesticide was deliberately added to the food at some stage of production at a factory in Gunma, north of Tokyo, Jiji said. As of Wednesday, Maruha Nichiro has received about 630,000 phone calls from con- sumers in connection with the incident, includ- ing complaints from customers who had eaten tainted products and some reporting unusual odours, a company spokeswoman said. The food maker has recalled 6.4 million potentially tainted products, with 1.49 million packages recovered so far, she said. None of the products in question had been shipped overseas, the company said. South Korean media reports said LeeTeuk’s grandparents were found dead in bed while his father was hanging by a robe around his neck at their home Mon-day. The reports cited unidentified police officers as saying LeeTeuk’s father left a suicide note suggesting he committed suicide after strangling his parents. “I will go to the heaven with my parents,” LeeTeuk’s father was quoted as saying in the suicide note, according to the Chosun Ilbo newspaper.

The 30-year-old star’s father had been

suffering from depression and economic difficulties while living with his parents, both of whom were suffering from de-mentia. He divorced his wife in 1998. Police said Wednesday they couldn’t confirm the reports.

LeeTeuk, whose real name is Park Jeong-su, has been serving mandatory military service since October 2012 and was given emergency leave to attend the funerals, according to the media reports.

Super Junior, known for their boyishly

polished looks and synchronized dance routines, has enjoyed heartthrob status across Asia amid increasing popularity of South Korean pop culture in the region and elsewhere.

The band, which debuted in 2005, gained wider fame in Asia in 2010 after a YouTube video clip showing a group of dancing Thai policemen impersonating its members became a sensation. The officers shimmied and swung their hips in the five-minute video spoof of “Sorry Sorry,” a hit song by Super Junior.

LONDON — Space thriller “Gravity” and unflinching slavery saga “12 Years a Slave” are among leading contenders for the Academy Film Awards, Britain’s equivalent of the Oscars. “Gravity” has nominations in 11 categories, including

best picture and lead actress, for Sandra Bullock.

“12 Years” star Chiwetel Ejiofor and director Steve McQueen had 10 nomina-tions, including for best picture. Acting nominees announced Wednesday include Leonardo DiCaprio for “The Wolf of Wall Street” and Judi Dench for “Phi-

lomena.” The British prizes, known as BAFTAs, will be awarded at London’s Royal Opera House on Feb. 16.

They are considered an indicator of likely success at Hollywood’s Academy Awards two weeks later. Last year, Iran hostage drama “Argo” took the BAFTA for best film and the best-picture Oscar.

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. The Division Head of Animal Health, Luh Suri Urtini, when met on the sidelines of spray-ing in the Satria Bird Market on Monday (Jan 7) said that such activity should be done regularly each year in anticipation against bird flu.

She said the activity would continue to be done by target-ing the whole bird markets and poultry traders in the markets. Disinfectant spraying undertaken by the agency was intended to reach all the poultry markets. In addition to targeting the livestock

markets, her party also targeted the birds coming into the city of Denpasar by spraying in the border region.

Urtini also admitted to have monitored the birds coming into the city of Denpasar by checking the completeness of documents of the poultry delivery. Urtini further added the spraying was done to anticipate the spread of bird flu vi-rus. She said such an activity had actually been held regularly since the bird flu outbreak a few years ago. “The spraying is scheduled to prevent the spread of bird flu,”

she said. One of the poultry sellers in

the Satria Bird Market, Artono, admitted the spraying activity was very good to prevent bird flu. “As traders, we really agree if the spraying is carried out,” he said.

He hoped such kind of activity could more routinely be imple-mented in the future in order to prevent the occurrence of bird flu at early stage. In anticipation of bird flu, Artono confessed to quarantine the birds for sale. “We also quarantine all the animals to be sold,” he said. (kmb12)

Bali PostSINGARAJA - Strawberry farmers at Pancasari village, Sukasada

subdistrict, suffered a loss in rainy season. Their harvest yields declined rapidly as their strawberry crops perished because it was flushed by rain almost every day.

A number of strawberry growers at Pancasari mentioned on Tuesday (Jan 7) that actually their strawberries had been ready to be harvested since about two weeks ago. But before it was completely ripe, the strawberries had perished due to rain. In addition, some strawberries were also attacked by caterpillar pests. Their harvest yields plummeted. If the weather was nice they could harvest 20 kg of strawberry in each harvest carried out once every two days.

However, in this rainy season, they only gained 10 to 15 kg. A strawberry farmer, Ketut Warsini, admitted the selling price of strawberries also reduced because the fruit condition was not perfect. If the strawberry could be previ-ously sold for IDR 35,000 per kilogram, then it can only be sold at the price of about IDR10,000. “Under such circumstance, the cost of production is not comparable to the results of production,” he said. SEMARAPURA - A worker, Udin Maulana, 25, was electrocuted by PLN power line while trying to bring down a large-size billboard of motorcycle product at three-way intersection of SMAN 1 Semarapura high school, precisely in the north of police post, Monday (Jan 7). The victim fell down from the top of billboard with the height of about ten meters in charred condition. The victim looked in agony while receiving treatment in emergency room of Klungkung Hospital.

His colleague, Dolok Purwanto, 41, said the victim, he and another friend, Sutrisno, 23, were about to replace the old billboard with the new one around 10:30 a.m. To replace it, Udin and Sutrisno climbed to the top of the billboard sizing about eight meters by five meters. When bringing down, the head of Udin wearing a hat touched the transverse cable of PLN approximately 50 centimeters above the billboard. Shortly after hit by the electric shock, the victim fell backwards of the billboard with charred body condition.

His body was burning and caused the chest to blister as a result of burns. “At that time, Udin and Sutrisno were above. Udin suddenly fell with the smell of burning from his body,” said Purwanto.

The victim was rushed to emergency room of Klungkung Hospital. The victim directly got intensive care from medical team in the local room. His burned body was bandaged, and looked to be sprayed with several bottles of infusion fluids.

The incident shocked the surrounding people. Residents thought the victim was the officer of the Sanitation and Landscaping Agency (DKP) hit by electric shock due to cutting tree limbs At the same time, a number of DKP officers indeed cut branches of trees along Jalan Flamboyan or in front of the Klungkung Hospital.

Meanwhile, at the scene, the billboard looked too close to power line of the PLN. Such condition was quite hazardous. Eyewitnesses at the scene, including Nengah Merta Widiana, assessed the billboard place-ment was very hazardous and should be replaced with a smaller one, so it was getting far away from the power lines. Increasing volume of the waste on Kedonganan Beach has hap-pened within the past few days. Marine debris, mainly tree branch-es and trunks, was drifting and floating in the waters around Ke-donganan. The increase in the vol-ume of waste made local janitors and community overwhelmed.

Such amount of waste disrupted the economic activity, especially fishermen and local traders. Spec-tacle of such pile of waste also dis-rupted the beauty of the beach.

Secretary of Kerta Bali fisher-men group of Kedonganan, Wayan Nasib, said on Tuesday (Jan 7) the janitors on Kedonganan Beach so far could only handle the marine debris around the Hygienic Fish Market. Meanwhile, the waste in the form of plastic and timber at some points on the other part of the beach was forced to be ignored as such.

“The janitors here are overwhelmed and unable to handle the entire area of Kedonganan Beach,” he said while hoping the government could give special attention to the waste problem on Kedonganan Beach.

Similar opinion was also ex-pressed by community leader doubling as a legislator of the Badung House, I Made Sugita. He said the community hoped the government through relevant agencies to immediately get down and do the handling. According to him, the problem could not be addressed only by the public due to the limitations especially in the matter of equipment.

“We do hope the government can immediately perform the handling. If only relying on the capability of local community alone, it is surely unable to reach maximum results,” he said. (kmb25)

Bali PostMANGUPURA - Passenger

growth at Ngurah Rai Airport indicated a significant surge. PT Angkasa Pura I recorded 224,118 domestic passengers who came to Bali, an increase of 19 percent by the end of 2013 compared to the same period last year. Meanwhile, the number of passengers who left Bali through the Ngurah Rai Airport reached 219,909 people, up 24 percent com-pared to last year.

“The increase also occurred in international arrival pas-sengers, reaching 169,952 or an increase of 28 percent, while departing passengers reached 148,709 people or an increase or 24 percent,” said I Gusti Ngurah Ardita, Co-General Manager of PT Angkasa Pura I Ngurah Rai Airport in Denpasar.

It was said that to support the smooth flow of passengers, the AP I had got the support from the entire airport com-munity and local government through mutual synergy in accordance with the duties and

responsibilities to ensure the smooth flow of passengers.

“Significant passenger growth is a challenge for us as the operator of the airport con-sidering that so far the I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport remains in the process of finalizing devel-opment,” he said.

He explained that in the completion stage of the air-port project his party should keep trying to provide the best services. “We are aware that in the current condition it is possible to result in dis-comfort to users of the airport services. For instance, the airport recently experienced an electrical interference at some points,” he added.

As had been known, the expansion of the Ngurah Rai International Airport cost up to IDR 2.8 trillion, where PT Angkasa Pura I was designated as the company in charge of the project. The expansion activities included the improvement of building capacity, international terminal, parking lot, apron, international cargo building and baggage. (kmb27)

In one study, researchers used national health surveys and death rates to calculate how many deaths might have occurred since 1964 if Americans’ smoking habits and related deaths had continued at a pace in place before the report. More than 42 percent of U.S. adults smoked in years preceding the report; that rate has dropped to about 18 percent. The researchers say their calculation — 8 million deaths — equals lives saved thanks to anti-smoking efforts.

Their report also says tobacco controls have contributed sub-stantially to increases in U.S. life expectancy. For example, life expectancy for 40-year-olds has increased by more than five

years since 1964; tobacco control accounts for about 30 percent of that gain, the report says.

The conclusions are just es-timates, not hard evidence, but lead author Theodore Holford, a biostatistics professor at Yale University’s school of public health, said the numbers “are pretty striking.”

Yet smoking remains a stubborn problem and heart disease, cancer, lung ailments and stroke — all of-ten linked with smoking — are top four leading causes of death in the U.S. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control says about 443,000 Ameri-cans still die prematurely each year from smoking-related causes.

“Tobacco is, quite simply, in a

league of its own in terms of the sheer numbers and varieties of ways it kills and maims people,” Dr. Thomas Frieden, the CDC’s director, wrote in a JAMA com-mentary.

Frieden said the United States lags behind many other countries in adopting measures proven to reduce tobacco use, including graphic health warning labels on cigarettes, high tobacco taxes and widespread bans on tobacco advertising.

“Images of smoking in mov-ies, television and on the Internet remain common; and cigarettes continue to be far too affordable in nearly all parts of the country,” Frieden wrote.

RIO DE JANEIRO — A stout green catamaran plied the pol-luted waters of Rio de Janeiro’s Guanabara Bay Monday along-side the local fishing boats, but instead of grouper and swordfish its catch consisted of plastic bags, soda bottles and a discarded toilet seat. The catamaran is one of three so-called “eco-boats,” floating garbage vessels that are a key part of authorities’ pledge to clean up Rio’s Guanabara Bay before it and other Rio waterways host events during the 2016 Olympic Games. Critics say the boats do little to address the more pressing question of sewage.

With limited trash and sewage services in this sprawling metrop-olis of 6 million people, tons of garbage and raw waste flow daily from sludge-filled rivers into the bay, where Olympic and Paralym-pic sailing events will be held. At low tide, mountains of household refuse, old sofas and even washing machines are seen.

An Associated Press analysis in November of more than a decade’s worth of Rio state government tests on waterways across the city showed fecal coliform pollution levels far above those considered safe by Brazilian or U.S. law.

That pollution means nearly all beaches dotting the 148-square-mile (383-square-kilometer) bay have long been abandoned by swimmers, and some health ex-perts warn of risks to athletes who come into contact with the water. Elite sailors have warned that high-speed collisions with floating detritus could damage or even sink

sailboats during the Olympics.Water pollution issues began

making headlines in Brazil’s lo-cal press again in recent days, after thick patches of brown foam appeared along the city’s most popular beaches like Copacabana as the Southern Hemisphere sum-mer hits full stride. Rio’s beaches, overwhelmed with holiday visi-tors, have been inundated with trash, much of it floating in water just yards (meters) from the sand.

That’s where authorities hope the eco-boats will make an im-pact. They’re rectangular crafts made of steel and fitted with powerful speedboat motors and a sieve that traps garbage floating up to 18 inches (45 centimeters) below the water’s surface, cap-turing everything from house-hold trash to bigger items like abandoned television sets and refrigerators. The trash is dumped into the boat, where recyclables are sorted out. The vessels don’t address sewage, but authorities insist they’ll make a big dent in the overall pollution.

“Our objective is to not to have floating garbage in Guana-bara Bay,” said Gelson Serva, who heads the state government’s latest bay cleanup program, an $840 mil-lion project that includes efforts to expand the capacity of the city’s strained sewage treatment system. Only 30 percent of Rio’s sewage is treated, with the rest flowing into area rivers, the bay, local lagoons and its world-famous beaches.

“Those who live around the bay can already notice a difference over the past two years,” Serva said as the clanking sieve dumped garbage into the ship’s hull.

A national study suggests the world’s top cancer killer isn’t always as deadly as doctors once thought, finding that more than 18 percent of lung cancers detected in screening scans are likely so slow growing that they’d never cause problems.

Study: Tobacco control has saved millions of livesAssociated Press Writer

CHICAGO — Anti-smoking measures have saved roughly 8 million U.S. lives since a land-mark 1964 report linking smoking and disease, a study estimates, yet the nation’s top disease detective says dozens of other countries do a better job on several efforts to cut tobacco use. The study and comments were published online Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association. This week’s issue commemorates the 50th anniversary of the U.S. surgeon general report credited with raising alarms about the dangers of smoking.

Morsi and 14 other Muslim Brotherhood members face charges of inciting the killing of protesters outside a Cairo presidential palace in December 2012 — when he was still in office and when at least 10 people were killed and hundreds wounded. Wednesday’s hearing was to be Morsi’s second appear-ance in court since his ouster in a popularly-backed coup on July 3. Seven of Morsi’s co-defendants are being tried in the case in absentia, while the rest are being held at a Cairo jail.

It’s one of three trials that Morsi faces. Charges in the other two cases have to do with Morsi’s jail-break in 2011 — during an uprising that ousted his predecessor, autocrat Hosni Mubarak — and allegations that he conspired with militant groups. Charges in all three carry the death penalty.

Since Morsi’s ouster, his Broth-erhood has been waging a campaign of street protests to demand his reinstatement. The military-backed government has meanwhile cracked down on the Brotherhood, arresting thousands, including the group’s top and mid-level leaders. In August,

security forces cleared two pro-Morsi sit-in camps in Cairo, killing hundreds.

Several dozen Morsi support-ers clashed with security forces on Wednesday outside the court, a makeshift lecture hall at a Cairo po-lice academy. The Interior Ministry, which is in charge of police, said 17 protesters were arrested. Another 15 pro-Morsi protesters were arrested in the nearby district of Nasr City, a stronghold of the Brotherhood, said Ibrahim, the minister.

Wednesday’s adjournment came less than a week before Egyptians are scheduled to start voting in a nationwide referendum on a new constitution that, if adopted by a simple majority, will replace an Islamist-tilted one passed under Morsi. About 680,000 Egyptians living abroad started voting on the new charter on Wednesday.

Defense lawyers claimed the adjournment was linked to the Jan. 14-15 referendum on the new constitution and that the judge’s decision was politically motivated. “The decision was inspired by the political circumstances,” said one of the lawyers, Osama el-Helou.

SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea said Wednesday it will elect members of its rubber-stamp parliament in March, which could pro-vide a glimpse into any changes in the country’s power elite after the execution of leader Kim Jong Un’s uncle.

North Korea usually holds parliamentary elections every five years and the polls are largely a formality because candidates are believed to be hand-picked by the ruling Workers’ Party. But since members of the Supreme People’s Assembly typically hold other top official posts, the elections are closely watched by outside analyst for any hints for a shift in power in the tightly controlled country.

This year’s election will be the first since Kim took power after the death of his father Kim Jong Il in late 2011. It also will take place after Kim Jong Un had his uncle and top official Jang Song Thaek executed on treason charges last month. Observers said the execution was aimed at bolstering Kim’s power but also showed his grip on power wasn’t as tight as his father’s.

Kim is expected to use the elections to replace aging legislators with younger ones loyal to him, said analyst Cheong Seong-jang at the private Sejong Institute in South Korea. The official Korean Central News Agency said the elections will be held on March 9.

In the 2009 elections, 687 new assembly members were elected, with turnout of nearly 100 percent and all voters backing the sole candidate running in each constituency.

North Korea’s parliament typically meets once or twice a year to approve personnel changes and the nation’s budget and fiscal plans.

CAIRO — The trial of Egypt’s former Islamist president on charges of inciting murder was adjourned on Wednesday until next month, after bad weather prevented a helicopter flight from bringing Mohammed Morsi to court. The helicopter, which was to fly Morsi from a prison near the Mediterranean city of Alexandria to the court in eastern Cairo, could not take off because of thick fog, according to Interior Minister Mohammed Ibrahim. Judge Ahmed Sabry Youssef adjourned the proceedings until Feb. 1.

TABANAN - Commission III of the Bali House with a number of officers from the Bali Environment Agency (BLH) made a raid to soy sauce factory on Jalan Yeh Gangga, Ambengan hamlet, Gubug village, Tabanan, Tuesday (Jan 7). This raid was done because the Commission III received many complaints and reports from the public regarding the careless waste disposal activities made by the soy sauce factory to the river channel that harmed society and polluted the water flow of subak in the region.

“We have received reports and complaints from the public about the activities of soy sauce factory in Tabanan that disposed waste into the river haphazardly. I have taken the water sample and tested it in the BLH Bali. After we came in person to location, in fact, it is true if the water has been polluted,” said Chairman of Commission III of Bali House, IGM Suryanta Putra.

According to him, the haphazard waste disposal by soy plant polluted the environment, disrupted the activities of people and agricultural activity as well as caused a variety of germs and other problems. “Of course, it is not correct. The soy sauce factory should make and process the sewage. So, it does not carelessly dispose it into residential area or irrigation channel,” said the PDI-P politician from Tabanan.

After testing the water sample by using simple instrument, the result of total suspended solid (TSS) or turbidity rate of the water was high reaching 1,040 mg/L or nearly 10 times above the maximum threshold set forth in the Gubernatorial Regulation No.8/2007 where the maximum TSS for domestic waste was 100 mg/L.

“In terms of pH level, it remains relatively normal. However, the turbidity rate is very high. Obviously, the biological oxygen demand is very disturbed,” said Subdivision Head of Bali Environment Agency, IB Adi Palguna.

Visibly, the water sample of bottle washing discharge was very murky, looked brownish and smelt less pleasant. Based on the results of laboratory test, it could be ascertained the river water had been polluted. Even, according to recognition of Jero Mangku Bedugul of Subak Tanah Pegat, a total of 4 quintals of fish spread by a number of people died as the irrigation water of subak had been polluted. “Since taking the office in the Fishery Agency until my retirement, I have frequently complained directly to the manager of the factory, but it was not responded. Now, I do hope after the raid by the legislator, there will be a little awareness to manage the results of the bottle washing waste,” he said.

On the sidelines of the raid, IGM Suryanta Putra expected the stakeholders, local government and related agencies to monitor both the licensing and waste treatment problems in the future because according to him the water condition at Gubug was one of the many rivers that had been likely contaminated. “It is a warning to the water in Tabanan. We hope all can do a monitoring, particularly the monitoring to hospital waste. As there are many hospitals in Tabanan, the waste should not endanger the surrounding community,” he said. (kmb28)

The development of waste management pilot project was an init iative of the Ganesha Education University (Undik-sha) Singaraja in collaboration with the Polytechnic Bali and a university in the Netherlands as well as other social institu-tions. Various waste processing machines have been operated at Kayuputih Melaka village with local communities.

It was built at Kayuputih Melaka village because it was one of the vil-lages located at the upstream areas

near Lovina. As consideration, if the waste in the upstream area has been well managed, it will not flood the area of Lovina.

Rector of Undiksha Singaraja, Prof. Dr. Nyoman Sudiana, when met at the office of the Buleleng Regent on Tuesday (Jan 7) said the selection of Kayuputih Melaka for pilot project was in accordance with the results of a field study. Ac-cording to him, Kayuputih Melaka village was close to Lovina as a tourist area.

Usually, the rubbish coming

from the upstream area was sent during rainy season to Lovina so it could disrupt the tourist area. “On that basis, the environment in the upstream area needs to be maintained so that no waste will be littering Lovina,” he said.

According to Sudiana, the pilot project was expected to benefit the community, not only economically, but also built the habit of commu-nities to manage waste properly. “We also promote a good waste management to teenagers,” he said. (kmb15)

MONTREAL - Going digital is what’s hurting Canadian news-papers, not a lack of revenues or readers, which are both up, a pub-lishing industry spokesman said Tuesday.

“Newspapers don’t have an audience problem,” John Hinds, president and chief executive of industry association Newspapers Canada, told the Vancouver Sun.

“There’s a big fallacy out there. We have a revenue problem as we transition to cross-platform materi-als -- how do we pay for those? Our audiences are bigger than ever and actually growing.”

The comments come after Gla-cier Media this week announced the closure of the Kamloops Daily News after 80 years, citing insuf-ficient cost-cutting.

Hinds noted that advertising revenues dipped along with the economy, but have rebounded.

According to NADbank, which measures circulation, half of Ca-nadians read a printed newspaper every day.

And three-quarters read a printed newspaper at least once a week.

These figures remained steady while online news readership has grown in recent years.

Yet last year, four Canadian dai-lies switched to weekly publication and the free daily 24 Hours stopped publishing in Ottawa, Edmonton and Calgary.

Canada’s largest newspaper pub-lisher, Sun Media, also eliminated more than 1,000 jobs at its news-papers nationwide as part of a re-structuring to meet “unprecedented changes in the print media industry driven largely by the digital revolu-tion,” it said.

A union representing Sun work-ers accused the company of divert-ing healthy newspaper profits to its “laughably bad” start-up television network Sun TV.

“All the newspaper companies are struggling because the world has changed, consumers have changed, technology has changed, but you have readers,” NADbank’s president Anne Crassweller told the Sun.

“Isn’t that the bottom line? The audience is there.”

Money was being transferred back and forth for no reason. The account holder was recording double-digit returns on investments that were too good to be true. The bank itself was worried enough about possible fraud to withdraw its own invest-ments from him.

The name on the account was Bernard Madoff and on Tuesday JPMorgan paid a steep price for keeping quiet about its suspicions.

Federal authorities announced the nation’s larg-est bank will add to its other costly financial woes by forfeiting a record $1.7 billion to settle criminal charges alleging it turned a blind eye to the Madoff fraud, plus pay an additional $543 million to settle civil claims by victims. It also will pay another $350 million civil penalty for what the Treasury Depart-ment called “critical and widespread deficiencies” in its programs to prevent money laundering and other suspicious activity.

The bank failed to carry out its legal obligations to guard against money laundering while Madoff “built his massive house of cards,” George Veni-zelos, head of the FBI’s New York office, said at a

news conference.Madoff banked at JPMorgan through what court

papers referred to as the “703 account.” In 2008, the bank’s London desk circulated a memo describing JPMorgan’s inability to validate his trading activity or custody of assets and his “odd choice” of a one-man accounting firm, the government said.

In late October 2008, it filed a suspicious activ-ity report with British officials. In the weeks that followed, JPMorgan withdrew about $300 million of its own money from Madoff feeder funds. The fraud was revealed when Madoff was arrested in December 2008.

“Despite all these alarm bells, JPMorgan never closed or even seriously questioned Madoff’s Ponzi-enabling 703 account,” said U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara. “On the other hand, when it came to its own money, JPMorgan knew how to connect the dots and take action to protect itself against risk.”

In a statement, JPMorgan said it recognized it “could have done a better job pulling together vari-ous pieces of information and concerns about Mad-off from different parts of the bank over time.”

Prosecutors called the $1.7 billion the largest for-feiture by a U.S. bank and the largest Department of Justice penalty for a Bank Secrecy Act violation.

The settlement includes a so-called deferred prosecution agreement that requires the bank to acknowledge failures in its protections against money laundering but also allows it to avoid crimi-nal charges. No individual executives were accused of wrongdoing.

The agreement resolves two felony violations of the Bank Secrecy Act in connection with the bank’s relationship with Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities, the private investment arm of Madoff’s former business. The civil penalty was imposed by the Treasury Department’s Office of the Comptroller of the Currency.

The JPMorgan settlement is the latest in a se-ries of major deals it has made to resolve its legal troubles. In November, the bank agreed to pay $13 billion over risky mortgage securities it sold before the financial crisis — the largest settlement to date between the Justice Department and a corpora-tion.

The more than $2.5 billion that JPMorgan is paying comes from a company that reported $21.3 billion in net income for 2012. JPMorgan already has set aside $23 billion this year to cover settlement and litigation costs — including the $13 billion.

GIANYAR - Development of Ubud as an international tourist destination has an impact on the surrounding villages. Beauty of the village and its tourist attraction are not far appealing compared to those in Ubud. Customs, culture and hospitality of the people remain intense inspired by the tradition of Hinduism. The surrounding villages are such as Mas, Pejeng, Kemenuh and Blahbatuh.

Batuan village retains various kinds of unique-ness and characteristics, so it has become a fa-mous tourism village with the art appeals. At this village, people can still find an ancient Balinese house with interesting art activities of the society. There are people working as a painter, sculptor and mask carver.

Meanwhile, the ancient Balinese house is located at Penida hamlet, Batuan. Layout, build-ing elements, entrance gates and structures look very ancient like an antiquity. Along the road at the village, the artists look absorbing in painting on canvas and eggshells. Some other traditions it has are the mask carving, wood carving, making sculptures and other crafts.

Village Temple of Batuan is also a unique and famous tourist attraction. Carving style, cockfighting and mapeed (parade) tradition have been already well-known in the eyes of foreign travelers. The village also has a mask, Rejang and ancient Gambuh art troupes.

Blahbatuh village has spread its charm so that many travelers come to visit it. Blahbatuh Grand Palace is known as ancient royal palace with its own charm. This palace retains a Balinese archi-tectural design divided into three zones namely the outermost courtyard, middle courtyard and innermost courtyard in accordance with the

Kosala Kosali concept. This palace has a sacred relic in the form of

Gajah Mada mask, a weapon known as Ki Tun-jung Tutur in the form of large blowpipe and gam-buh (ancient operetta) puppet making the palace have sacred vibration. Various traditional arts like the gamelan, dance and vocals are still sustain-able. Local traditional market also becomes an attraction to foreign travelers. The famous handi-craft products at Blahbatuh village are bamboo chair, table and lamp trinkets. In harmony with the tourism development, many Batuan residents rely on their life in the service sector.

Mas village has almost the same condition and charms as Ubud. It is the center of wood carving handicrafts. Even, it has been known as a producer of sculpture and mask long before the development of tourism. On that account, along the way travelers can see the art shops displaying their handicraft products like sculpture and wood carvings. Besides, its design has also developed from traditional to the abstract and modern style.

Similarly, this village is also often chosen as an appropriate accommodation by world travelers. People’s houses with star-rated hotel standards are often chosen as a place of residence. On that account, the friendly Mas residents can become their friends when unwinding and relaxing. Another compa-rably interesting village to Ubud is Pejeng village. This village offers spiritual tourist centers. Among them, there are Kebo Edan Temple, Pusering Jagat Temple, Penataran Sasih Temple and Garba Temple.

Penataran Sasih Temple is very famous because it has a bronze kettledrum with the length of 186.5 cm also known as the ‘Moon of Pejeng.’ It is said that the moon fell from

the sky at the village. Besides, there are also relics of giant statues, Brahma statue, Ganesha statue and statues of the other gods. Local beautiful nature is often taken advantage by travelers for trekking and cycling. Rice field landscape and friendly community can be an appeal while crossing at the village. Such an atmosphere is also visible at Payangan village. With the natural beauty of the village, lately the Payangan village is besieged by investors to build tourist accommodation facilities.

?Kemenuh village also becomes a tourist attraction. The village inhabited by 1,056 people has sculpture handicrafts, Tege-nungan Waterfall attraction as well as the arts and culture becoming local distinctive appeal. The village offers beautiful views of rice fields and tourist accommodation like hotels and villas. The accommodation is owned and managed by local people. Kemenuh village is located in Sukawati subdistrict, very close to Ubud area. The village has market tourism in the form of gallery currently amounting to 50 units. The potential of exotic nature makes the village a center of trekking activities. Hotel guests staying in Ubud area often take advantage of the tourist facilities located at the edge of Petanu River. Likewise, there are many villas and houses of expatriates working as environmental and health observers.

Kemenuh is also rich in culinary treasures. Many stalls and restaurants offer Balinese traditional cuisines at the village. Similarly, there is Bale Budaya, a resident’s house which prepares a variety of typical foods. A unique tradition drawing the interest of trav-elers is ngedeblag, a ceremonial procession as repellent of disasters and plagues.

The sticker reading ‘We are ready to self-manage and sort the waste between plastic and foliage so our village turns clean’ was printed as much as 6,000 sheets. It would be installed at every home of resident.

Headman of Ubung Kaja, Wayan Mirta, said the break-through made by his party was an effort to realize a cleaner Den-pasar. It was expected that waste sorting should have been started from household level.

As a headman having been inaugurated a few months ago, he wanted people to realize that sanitation had become a problem in the city of Denpasar.

To urge people to change be-havior in order they could live cleanly and care for the environ-ment really took long time so that they could feel the significance of sanitation. By installation of the stickers, residents were expected to begin sorting their household waste. “Environmental sanitation is not merely for the government but also for each individual,” he said.

When having been aware of the environmental sanitation from their individual, of course it would be easier to realize a clean envi-ronment. Regarding the sticker installation, his party would rou-tinely monitor the impact. Since the sticker installation last Decem-ber, Mirta claimed that people had started to sort out the waste and disposed trash on time. Besides, his party also regularly took all staff and community to do cleanup every Friday or better known as Sweating Friday movement.

Where there were dirty areas, his party together with 12 hamlet heads carried out voluntary work. Acting Subdistrict Head of North Denpasar, Wayan Lodra, added the sticker installation made by Ubung Kaja village was one of the innovative measures to combat litter. “I do hope what is done by Ubung Kaja can have an impact on other villages in North Denpasar subdistrict,” he hoped. DENPASAR - The appeal of Denpasar Mayor to involve the entire component of community in maintaining sanitation got a positive response from the com-munity. On that account, various innovations were made by villages or headmen to invite the commu-nity to care about the sanitation. One of them was done at Ubung Kaja village. The action taken by local village officials was to put a sanitation sticker at every home.

AntaraJAKARTA - National Defense Forces

(TNI) is committed to keeping the national political stability in the run up to gen-eral elections in 2014, TNI Chief General Moeldoko has assured.

“TNI must have strong commitment in maintaining the national political stabil-ity,” Moeldoko stated at the opening of the TNI leadership meeting at the Cilang-kap TNI Headquarters in East Jakarta on Wednesday.

He noted that themed `Establishing TNI Professionalism in Maintaining Stability, Sovereignty and Integrity of the Unitary State of Indonesian Republic,¿ the meeting was expected to be able to improve the pro-fessionalism displayed by TNI soldiers.

According to him, TNI should contribute positively in maintaining political stability during the political year 2014, targeting 40 to 42 percent of Minimum Essential Force (MEF) during Strategic I plan this year.

“In 2013, we achieved MEF beyond the target set at 28.7 percent, and we expect

to increase it 40 to 42 percent in 2014,” Moeldoko stated, adding that Indonesian people can be witness to the country’s pri-mary weapons defense system in the army, navy and air force that will be strengthened in 2014.

In the 2014 budget, the Defense Force will receive Rp86 trillions, of which, 52 percent will be used for routine expendi-tures and 48 percent for the development sector.

According to Indonesian Defense Force data, during 2013, the military force performed well on financial and operational sectors.

“We had a good financial system report and almost all regions remained in a favour-able situation,” he explained.

However, Moeldoko added that the situa-tion should be further enhanced by strength-ening the intelligence system and territorial security, particularly in the border areas.

“In the border areas, we conduct compre-hensive operations that involve the army, navy and air force, to avoid any kind of friction,” Moeldoko explained.

“We are planning to send aid for the Mount Sinab-ung refugees on Thursday, January 9, through the North Sumatera Social Department,” stated the Social Ministry’s Director of Natural Disaster Victims Protec-tion Margowiyono, here on Wednesday.

Goods packed with foods, clothes and kid wares will be shipped. Previously, the North Sumatera Social Department had also sent 900 packets of foods to the refugees on Monday, January 6.

Margowiyono added that the central government will continue to support the local government in main-taining the welfare of Mount Sinabung’s refugees on both logistic needs and mitigation process.

The current emergency status of Mount Sinabung is at the fourth level or “Warning” status, which bans lo-cal villagers from doing any activities within the radius of five to seven kilometers from the volcano’s crater.

The refugee number has now reached 22,145 people, which spreads across 33 camps, including 1,204 elderly, 179 pregnant women and 606 infants.

AntaraJAKARTA - Garuda Indonesia

airways has proposed that ten flight schedules be transferred from Soeka-rno-Hatta Airport to Halim Perdana Kusuma Airport.

“Garuda has proposed to the Trans-portation Ministry that ten flight schedules be operated from Halim. We have yet to get the approval from the Ministry,” stated Head of Garuda Pub-lic Relation Pujobroto in an interview with Antara here, on Wednesday.

Pujobroto explained that the flight base transfer to Halim Airport is aimed at lessening the traffic at Soekarno-Hatta airport, as Garuda has 520 flight schedules which mainly operates from the airport that is located in the Tangerang Regency.

He pointed out that Garuda will transfer ten flight schedules to Halim after the Ministry approves of the proposal.

Garuda will also improve the ser-vice at Halim Airport similar to the one

at Soekarno-Hatta Airport in order to cater to passenger service.

“We will need to establish facilities such as executive lounge, parking area and proper check in counters,” Pujo-broto pointed out.

He added that Garuda will need at least 30 days to build these facilities, once the Ministry nods its approval.

Garuda, he explained, is still con-sidering the flight routes that will be transferred to Halim Airport.

Pujobroto added that Garuda will select the highest frequency routes to be transferred to Halim such as Surabaya-Jakarta that has 18 flights a day.

The Halim Airport will operate as a commercial airport serving at least 66 domestic flights in a day.

“We will serve commercial domes-tic flights. The airport currently serves only private lines for domestic and overseas flights,” emphasized General Manager of PT Angkasa Pura II Halim Airport Iwan Khrishadianto.

TV channels broadcast im-ages of flames leaping out of the windows and lapping at the metal sides of the cars. Five of the vic-tims had suffocated on smoke, while four were burned to death, Railway Minister Kotla Surya Prakash Reddy said. The fire spread through three of the train’s coaches before it was noticed by a guard at a railway post, who alerted railway authorities.

“We made the train stop imme-diately,” railway official Shailen-dra Kumar said. Because there was no road access for firefighters,

“passengers and train staff used fire extinguishers on the train to douse the fire, but it did not sub-side.” Firefighters eventually put out the blaze at a stop further along the track at the town of Gholvad in Maharashtra state.

The blackened and charred cars were unhooked from the rest of the train so it could continue its jour-ney north. The tragedy happened less than two weeks after another train fire killed 26 people in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh.

Accidents are common on In-dia’s railroad network, one of the

world’s largest, with 23 million passengers daily riding on about 11,000 passenger trains. Most collisions and fires are blamed on poor maintenance and human error.

Fires were involved in at least eight of the 100 or so ac-cidents that killed 185 people in 2012, according to a 2013 safety review submitted to Par-liament. The railway ministry on Wednesday promised about $8,000 in compensation to the families of those killed on the Mumbai-Dehradun Express.

CARACAS, Venezuela — A popular soap-opera actress and former Miss Venezuela, 29-year-old Monica Spear surely could have afforded to vacation elsewhere. Yet she and her ex-husband, who worked in the travel industry, spent New Year’s in the mountains of western Venezuela with their 5-year-old daughter then visited the plains of Apure state.

On their return by car to Caracas, Spear and Thomas Henry Berry, a 39-year-old British citizen, became the latest symbols of the ram-pant violent crime that is afflicting this oil-rich nation. Robbers shot and killed the two and wounded their daughter on an isolated stretch of highway when they tried to foil the assault by locking themselves inside their car, which had been disabled by tire punctures, police said Tuesday. The slayings late Monday outraged Venezuelans, triggering a wave of calls for action on social media. TV personality Camila Canabal expressed what many were feeling in a tweet: “Sadness, an-ger, indignation, impotence, shame and pain, pain, pain, dammit!!!” “Monica and Thomas are the face of thousands of men and woman whose children have been left without parents because of the violence of Venezuela,” she added.

Their daughter, Maya, was in stable condition after treatment for a leg wound and was with relatives in Caracas, authorities said. Fatal shootings are common in armed robberies in Venezuela, and rampant kidnapping has ensnared even foreign ambassadors and professional baseball players.

Violent crime soared during the 14-year rule of Hugo Chavez, who died of cancer last March. The country has one of the world’s highest murder rates — the United Nations has ranked it 5th globally. The slay-ing of Spear and her ex-husband followed a pattern of late-night assaults carried out by disabling cars with obstacles placed on roadways.

They were killed at about 10:30 p.m. between Puerto Cabello, the country’s main port, and the provincial capital of Valencia, while on a badly maintained stretch of highway that is lightly traveled at that hour. Their four-door sedan hit “a sharp object that had been placed on the highway” which punctured at least two of its tires, the direc-tor of the country’s investigative police, Jose Gregorio Sierralta, told reporters. Two tow trucks arrived almost immediately afterward, said Sierralta, and the attack occurred after the car had been lifted onto one of the trucks.

Seeing the assailants coming, the travelers locked themselves inside and the assailants fired at least six shots, he said. “They fired with vi-ciousness,” President Nicolas Maduro said of the attackers.

BERLIN - Boxes filled with bananas and cocaine were delivered to five Berlin supermarkets in what police on Tuesday called a “logistical error” by drug smugglers. Supermarket staff discovered the containers with a total of 140 kg of cocaine on Monday shortly before the fruit went on sale to the public, police and customs investigators said. It was the largest discovery of cocaine in Germany’s capital in about 15 years and has an estimated black market value of 6 million euros, according to police.

“We were of course surprised,” senior police officer Olaf Schremm, who heads the local drug investigation department, told reporters. “I don’t know where the mistake was in the perpetrators’ delivery chain.” The banana cartons, part of a consignment of 1,134 boxes, were brought by ship from Colombia to Hamburg and delivered to a fruit wholesaler in Berlin. Cocaine was found in seven of them, Schremm said.

The boxes were eventually delivered to five supermarkets in the Berlin area, but investigators said the intended destination of the cocaine was unclear. Masked officers in bulletproof vests showed the seized boxes to media. The cocaine will be stored and eventually destroyed.

Drugs are often smuggled in container ships from South America to Eu-rope, the police said, adding that it is very difficult to keep track of thousands of containers which are stored in the port of Hamburg for only a short time. “At the end of the day, it’s beyond one’s control,” Schremm said.

Derrick Favors had 15 and Marvin Williams scored 12 as the Jazz stopped the Thunder’s eight-game road winning streak.

Durant matched this season’s NBA-high scoring total, which he set against the Timberwolves on Saturday. The War-riors’ 10-game winning streak is their lon-gest since their NBA-title season in 1975. David Lee had 22 points and 18 rebounds to lead Golden State, while Stephen Curry contributed 15 points despite connecting on just 5 of 18 shots. Klay Thompson also

scored 15 points. The Warriors, playing their sixth game

of a seven-city trip, led by just two at the half against the Bucks, who have the NBA’s worst record. Golden State broke open the game with a 23-7 run to start the third quarter. Sacramento’s DeMarcus Cousins had 35 points and 13 rebounds and Rudy Gay scored 32 points as the Kings held off a furious rally to beat the Trail Blazers.

Cousins and Gay provided the spark for a 32-12 run starting at the end of the third quarter that put Sacramento ahead by 19 points. Damian Lillard scored 26 of his 41 points in the final period to pull Portland within two in the final minute. But the Kings made just enough free throws to hold off the Blazers, who have lost four of their last six games.

Meanwhile, a big trade didn’t seem to throw off the Cavaliers or Bulls, who both recorded victories. Cleveland beat the Philadelphia 76ers 111-93, while Chicago topped the Phoenix Suns 92-87. Chicago dealt Deng to Cleveland late Monday night in exchange for Bynum, who was immediately waived by the Bulls, and future draft picks.

MELBOURNE - World number five Juan Martin del Potro began his 2014 season with a win, albeit a scrappy one over Frenchman Nicolas Mahut to advance to the quarter-finals of the Syd-ney International on Wednesday. The Sydney warmup to the Australian Open has proved a graveyard for the seeds this week but the 25-year-old former U.S. Open champion avoided an early flight to Melbourne by coming back to win 1-6 6-3 6-4.

Rated a dark horse to win the title at Melbourne Park and add to his sole grand slam triumph at Flushing Mead-ows in 2009, the top seeded Argentine will next take on Czech veteran Radek Stepanek for a place in the last four. Other seeds struggled, with third seeded Italian Andreas Seppi bundled out by Australia’s Marinko Matesovic 6-3 6-4 and sixth seed Julien Benneteau of France dumped in straight sets by Ukraine’s Sergiy Stakhovsky.

The women’s draw, which has already seen top seed Agnieszka Radwanska and former world number one Caroline Wozniacki sent packing, lost third seed Sara Errani, last year’s surprise French Open semi-finalist, who was upset

7-6 (7-2) 6-3 by Bulgaria’s Tsvetana Pironkova in the quarter-finals.

The Italian world number seven took a medical time-out in the second set to have treatment on her lower back, rais-ing concerns over her fitness ahead of the year’s first grand slam. One-time Wimbledon semi-finalist Pironkova will play second seed and former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova, who wore down Lucie Safarova 7-6 6-2, for a place in the final.

BERDYCH WINSThe invitational Kooyong Classic

kicked off in Melbourne’s leafy eastern suburbs on Wednesday, with a smatter-ing of men’s top 10 players warming up at the eight-man exhibition, which offers the same surface used at Melbourne Park. World number seven Tomas Berdych roared back from a 5-2 deficit in the first set to overhaul Spaniard Fernando Verdasco 7-5 6-2 in his first hit-out of 2014 in brilliant sunshine. Japanese number one Kei Nishikori also enjoyed an opening win over Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov 7-6 (7-5) 6-4.

World number nine Richard Gasquet of France nearly suffered an embarrass-ing defeat to plucky teenager Jordan Thompson, and had to save two match

points before fending off the 321st-ranked Australian 7-5 3-6 7-6 (7-4).

Thompson, who won a wildcard play-off for the Australian Open, was a late replacement for defending champion Lleyton Hewitt, who pulled out of the tournament citing fatigue. Sam Stosur’s stuttering revival after a dismal Hopman Cup continued with a second straight win at the Hobart International in front of home fans.

The former U.S. Open champion had to save two match points against 54th-ranked Frenchwoman Kristina Mladenovic as she laboured through a 6-4 2-6 7-6 (9-7) match blighted by an astonishing 22 double-faults from both players.

World number three David Ferrer, bidding for his fourth straight Auck-land Open crown, kicked off his 10th appearance in the tournament with a 6-7 (7-5) 6-3 6-1 win over American Donald Young.

In new coach Juan Antonio Pizzi’s second game in charge, a fired-up Valencia dominated pos-session at the Mestalla but fell behind when a fluffed clearance by keeper Vicente Guaita fell to midfielder Garcia. Garcia also had Atletico’s best chance of the first half but his rising effort was well saved by Guaita, while Valencia’s

Juan Bernat drew a fine save from Courtois with a low drive seven minutes after the break.

Courtois made three more bril-liant saves as Valencia pressed for an equaliser, first leaping to tip a curling effort from substitute Sergio Canales around the post in the 76th minute. The Belgium international, on loan from Chelsea, then denied

Pablo Piatti in the 82nd before pro-ducing possibly his best stop of the night a minute later from Feghouli’s close-range blast.

It looked as if Diego Simeone’s Atletico side, who are level with Barcelona at the top of La Liga, would hold on to their lead ahead of the second leg at the Calderon in a week’s time but Postiga struck in

the final action of the game.Nevertheless, with an away goal

in the bank, Atletico, who beat bit-ter city rivals Real Madrid 2-1 in last season’s final, will be favou-rites to advance to face Real Betis or Athletic Bilbao, who play on Wednesday, in the quarter-finals.

AWAY GOALAtletico have won all their home

matches this season apart from a 1-1 draw against Barcelona, who they play in La Liga on Saturday, in August’s Spanish Super Cup first leg. “I think we deserved more but we are content with the draw, the tie is still open and we will carry on fighting,” Postiga said told Spanish television broadcaster Canal Plus.

“The intensity of the team was good and we have to continue in the same vein,” he added. “We were up against a great goalkeeper and a sol-id defence and we knew how tough it would be to score a goal against Atletico.” Courtois told Canal Plus the away goal could be crucial for next week’s second leg.

“It was a great match and Va-lencia are always a great opponent and there was a fantastic atmo-sphere,” he said. “In the first half we hardly created anything and in the second I had a lot of work to do. “We were hoping to hold out until the end but it wasn’t to be but the positive thing is we’ve scored an away goal and that’s important for the return leg.”

MADRID - Real Madrid have launched an internal inquiry after their Argentina winger Angel Di Maria was seen to grab his crotch while he was being substituted in Monday’s 3-0 La Liga win at home to Celta Vigo. Di Maria, who was replaced by Gareth Bale midway through the second half at the Bernabeu and was whistled by the home fans as he trudged off, insisted it was “a natural gesture” and said he apologised if anyone had found it offensive.

The incident was widely de-

bated in the Spanish and Argentine media on Tuesday and prompted further speculation that Di Maria, who has made fewer appearances since the arrival of world record signing Bale, might be sold either in the January transfer window or at the end of the season.

“I did not want to do anything towards either the supporters or the coach as was being claimed,” the 25-year-old was quoted as saying on Real’s website (www.realma-drid.com) on Tuesday.

“It was a natural gesture that any man does, and all the more so when he is running,” he added.

“You do it a lot on the pitch. On television you can see that it lasts a millisecond. It’s nothing. “It’s not like I was doing it on purpose for an extended period of time.”

Di Maria said he was “in very good shape and very happy” at Real and that coach Carlo Ance-lotti had faith in him. He added that he agreed with the club’s decision to launch an enquiry as it would help resolve the matter. “I think it is right, not only for those who have opened the enquiry but also for me so I can explain the situation and what it (the gesture) was,” he said.

Manchester United slumped to a third consecutive loss for the first time in nearly 13 years when Sunderland added to manager David Moyes’ troubles by winning the first leg of their League Cup semifinal 2-1 on Tuesday. The setback against the Premier League’s last-place team completed a hat trick of 2-1 losses at the start of 2014 for Moyes, in his first season as Alex Ferguson’s successor.

United, which won the Premier League by 11 points last season before Ferguson retired, trails leader Arsenal by 11 points after losing to Tottenham on New Year’s Day. And the FA Cup quest ended at the first hurdle on Sunday when Swansea won their third round meeting at Old Trafford.

“(The fans) know we are going through a difficult time,” Moyes said. “They have probably never seen it as bad as this for a long time. But I am determined to put it right, I’m sure we will.” The Red Devils can still reach the League Cup final at Wembley if they overturn the deficit at Old Trafford on Jan 22.

Sunderland’s victory was secured from the penalty spot in the 65th minute by Fabio Borini after United midfielder Tom Cleverley tripped Adam Johnson. Sunderland took the lead when 40-year-old United veteran Ryan Giggs inadvertently bundled the ball into his own net just before halftime when under pressure from Phil Bardsley.

Nemanja Vidic headed United level seven minutes into the second half before — according to Moyes — United was thwarted by a poor decision by referee Andre Marriner in awarding the penalty. “I feel we are having to play the opposition and the officials at this moment in time,” Moyes said on United’s in-house television station.

“Maybe I’ve got to understand that’s what happens at Man United. But if we do, we certainly aren’t getting much in our favor at this mo-ment in time.” The outlook isn’t completely bleak for the Scot, with his team still in the Champions League and facing Olympiakos in the round of 16 next month.

The 72-year-old Ferguson continues to loom large over his succes-sor, watching at the Stadium of Light in his role as a United director on another miserable night for the club he managed for more than 26 trophy-laden years.

SEOUL — South Korea foot-ball coach Hong Myong-bo said he’s planning to lobby former Man-chester United star Park Ji-sung to return to the national team to play in this year’s World Cup, Korean media reported Wednesday. The 32-year-old Park, now with PSV Eindhoven in the Dutch league, ended his international career after leading South Korea to the semi-finals of the Asian Cup in January 2011. He has said repeatedly since then through representatives that he has no intention of returning to

the international game.Hong said, however, he wants

to hear it directly from Park. “I have only heard through people surrounding Park Ji-sung that will not play for the national team,” Hong said. Hong was Park’s cap-tain when South Korea reached the semifinals of the 2002 World Cup and was appointed to the national team coaching position in July. The former defender is searching for experience to compliment what is expected to be one of the youngest squads to play in the World Cup in June.

South Korea has been drawn to

play Belgium, Russia and Algeria in Group H. “We need some older players,” Hong said, using the 2010 World Cup team led by Park as an example. “That team was a good combination of youth and experience.”

Hong said last week that he was certain of 80 percent of his final 23 players, leaving Korean media to speculate as to who is in contention for the available five or six spots.

The team heads to Brazil later this month for an eight-day training camp before traveling to the United States for warm-up games against the U.S., Mexico and Costa Rica.

The refugee number has now reached 22,145 people, which spreads across 33 camps, including 1,204 elderly, 179 pregnant women and 606 infants.

airways has proposed that ten flight schedules be transferred from Soeka-rno-Hatta Airport to Halim Perdana Kusuma Airport.

MUMBAI, India — Fire and smoke engulfed three cars of an Indian passenger train early Wednesday, killing nine people as they slept in the latest tragedy to hit the country’s vast rail-way network, officials said. Authorities were trying to determine what caused the fire to break out before dawn, just hours after the train left Mumbai on a 48-hour journey to the Himalayan foothill town of Dehradun, Western Railways spokesman Sunil Singh said.

The action taken by local village officials was to put a sanitation sticker at every home.

(kmb15)

(kmb25)

TOKYO - More than 1,000 people have fallen ill after eating pesticide-contaminated frozen food as a scandal widens across Japan, Jiji Press reported Wednesday.

In western Osaka prefecture, a nine-month-old baby was hospitalised with vomiting on Monday after eating a product called creamy corn croquettes, the report said.

As of Wednesday, Maruha Nichiro has received about 630,000 phone calls from con-sumers in connection with the incident, includ-ing complaints from customers who had eaten tainted products and some reporting unusual odours, a company spokeswoman said.

The food maker has recalled 6.4 million potentially tainted products, with 1.49 million packages recovered so far, she said. None of the products in question had been shipped overseas, the company said.

While food scares do happen in Japan -- in August 2012 E. coli-riddled cabbage killed seven people and sickened dozens -- standards are relatively high.

However, a much-vaunted reputation for safe and high quality food has been badly affected by the Fukushima atomic disaster, which saw acres of farmland polluted by nuclear fall-out and many countries restrict agricultural imports from the area.
