By inspecting congenital hypothy-roidism since the baby was born, itcould prevent the occurrence of men-tal disorders and the abnormal growthof the baby. “Congenital hypothy-roidism is a thyroid hormonal forma-tion disorder which can cause stuntedgrowth and brain development,” saidRetayasa. Rate of the congenital hy-pothyroidism incidence was about 1in 4,000 births.

Then, how to do this early detec-tion? According to Retayasa, thephases of screening were done bytaking blood samples of the babiesconcerned and then sent to Jakarta forfurther examination. If the result in-dicated any interference on the thy-roid hormonal formation, then thebaby would get the treatment like hor-monal administration. “By earlytherapy and medication, the hor-monal formation disorders can betreated so that the growth and braindevelopment of children will be bet-

Government through department of health is now promot-ing a program named New Born Screening. It is an earlydetection of diseases that are fatal or in hereditary on thenewborn infant so that later on can be prevented throughtherapy and medication. The New Born Screening programhas been applied to several hospitals in Bali, one of which isto Wangaya Hospital. According to I Wayan Retayasa, oneof the perinatologists in Wangaya Hospital, the New BornScreening had been conducted in Wangaya Hospital sincetwo years ago. The screening was performed by detectingthe formation of congenital hypothyroidism or abnormalhormone produced by the thyroid gland.

ter,” he said.In Indonesia, the New Born Screen-

ing examination is merely intended todetect congenital hypothyroid. “Actu-ally there are many screening exami-nations such as galactosemia, congeni-tal adrenal hyperplasia up to toxoplas-mosis. However, up to this time in In-donesia can only be performed oneinspection namely congenital hy-pothyroidism,” said Retayasa.

According to him, to conduct thescreening examination was indeedentailed some mass requirements suchas the availability of inspection facil-ity in the laboratory up to its medica-tion. “So, it will be useless if the pa-tient is checked without the availabil-ity of medication,” explainedRetayasa,

Nevertheless, he expected the NewBorn Screening in Indonesia couldcontinue to grow so that the abnormali-ties occurred to children could be morewidely known and prevented. (san)

The election, watched by the Westfor signs whether Bosnia will movetoward the EU and NATO or sinkdeeper into stagnation, was marredwhen officials said they would probepossible fraud in voting for the Serbpresidency member.

Since the last election in 2006,mistrust has deepened between na-tionalist Croat, Serb and Muslimleaders, and political gaps have wid-ened between the country’s two au-tonomous regions, the Muslim-Croatfederation and the Serb Republic.

SEOUL – North Korea’s young heir apparent accompanied his fa-ther Kim Jong-Il on two visits to China this year in preparation for aneventual power transfer, a report said Monday.

The leader’s youngest son behaved like a bodyguard to his ailing fa-ther during the trips in May and August and travelled under an assumedname, Yonhap news agency quoted sources on the North as saying.

Kim Jong-Un, believed aged about 27, apparently cemented his po-sition as heir when he was appointed four-star general and given keyparty posts during last week’s rare communist party meeting.

His official photo was published in state media for the first time.Analysts had speculated that Kim Jong-Il’s visit in August was aimed

at garnering support for the hereditary power succession from China, the impoverished North’s sole major ally and economic lifeline.

“Jong-Un, dressed in a suit, acted as if he was a bodyguard and ac-companied Kim Jong-Il closely,” Yonhap quoted a source as saying, adding the trip would be used to showcase his loyalty to his father.

But the young protege did not attend key meetings with senior Beijingofficials such as the meetings in May and August between Kim Jong-Iland Chinese President Hu Jintao, said the source.

South Korea’s National Intelligence Service said it could not con-firm the report.

A North Korean ruling party delegation visited Beijing late last weekin an apparent move to brief Chinese officials on the party meeting, thelargest for 30 years.

Hu on Saturday pledged to strengthen ties with the new leadership inNorth Korea, saying Beijing would work with them to “promote andexpand cooperation” and “strengthen communication” on regional andinternational issues.

“Now with Kim Jong-Un becoming the de facto next leader, he willsoon visit China just like Kim Jong-Il did in the past,” said the sourcequoted by Yonhap.

Kim Jong-Il, after his status as leader-in-waiting was confirmed at a1980 party meeting, visited China three years later.

Chaudhry said he was not re-quired to enter a plea but intendedto fight the allegations.

“The charge as it was read out inthe court is that we assembled at oneof the accused’s residences unlaw-fully,” he said.

“We’ll certainly be defendingourselves. We had no unlawful pur-pose in mind.”

Chaudhry became Fiji’s first eth-nic Indian leader when electedprime minister in 1999. He wasoverthrown a year later in a coup ledby nationalist George Speight.

As leader of the Fiji Labour party,he is one of the main oppositionvoices in Fiji, where the media areheavily censored and political par-

ties cannot issue statements seen asdestabilising the military regime.

In July, Chaudhry appeared incourt on a raft of charges unrelated tohis latest alleged offence, includingmoney laundering and tax evasion. He has denied any wrongdoing.

Asked if he was being targetedby the regime of Fiji’s self-ap-pointed military ruler VoreqeBainimarama, Chaudhry replied:“I’d rather not answer that at themoment.”

Bainimarama, who seized powerin a 2006 coup, imposed emergencyregulations that ban public meetingswhen he abrogated the constitutionin April last year, prompting con-demnation from human rightsgroups.

Australian Foreign MinisterKevin Rudd said he was concernedat Chaudhry’s detention andCanberra believed the emergencylaws used to arrest him were anabuse of power.

“The government has consis-tently expressed concern about theuse of the public emergency regula-tions by the regime and the abuse ofthe rule of law... (we) will continueto monitor the situation closely,” aspokeswoman for Rudd said.

Chaudhry’s arrest came in a ruralarea dominated by the sugar indus-try, once a mainstay of Fiji’seconomy, which has collapsed fol-lowing a failed attempt byBainimarama’s cash-strapped gov-ernment to modernise crushing mills.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is consid-ered its birth day and celebration always takes place on thesame day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When newmoon is used then the celebration always happens on new moonor full moon. The day of course can differ the religious cel-ebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some templecelebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakihtemple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and mostof the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importanceof the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed withpieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, deco-rations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold andChinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the fourcorners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, whiteor black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped inthe shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrel-las soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, longflags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. Infront of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, riceand other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are thegirls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangementsof all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Everyvisitor admires the grace with which the carry their load ontheir heads.

Police believe the attackersthrew a grenade Saturday night atthe main square in the town ofGuadalupe, but were still trying toconfirm the type of explosive, saidAdrian de la Garza, the director ofthe investigations agency of NuevoLeon, where the town is located.

Six children, the youngest 3years old, were among the injured, said Francisco Gonzalez, the statedeputy health director. He said theinjuries were not life-threatening,and most of the victims had re-turned home from the hospital.

It was the fourth such attack intwo days in the area around the cityof Monterrey, which has been reel-ing from a turf war between theGulf and Zetas drug gangs.

On Friday night, three separategrenade attacks happened: near thefederal courts, outside a prison andnear the U.S. Consulate inMonterrey. A security guard wasinjured in the attack at the courts.

Nuevo Leon Attorney GeneralAlejandro Garza y Garza said theymay be revenge for recent opera-tions against drug traffickers. Hedid not specify which ones, but 22suspected drug gang memberswere killed in a Sept. 15 shootoutwith soldiers in Ciudad Mier, an-other town in Nuevo Leon. Last

MONTERREY, Mexico – An explosion at a plaza in northeastern Mexico injured 15 people, anattack authorities blamed Sunday on drug cartels targeting the civilian population to cause chaos.

week, marines captured 30 sus-pected Gulf cartel members inTamaulipas state, which bordersNuevo Leon.

“We believe this might havebeen an attack against the civilianpopulation. They are trying to cre-ate chaos and anxiety in the popu-lation,” Garza y Garza said.

Soldiers arrested eight suspectedZetas members in Guadalupe early Sun-day, although the operation appearedunrelated to the attack on the plaza.

The soldiers were patrolling thetown when they saw three carsbrake suddenly and try to reverseand flee, according to the DefenseDepartment statement. Soldiers ar-rested eight people and found 8rifles and ammunition in the cars.

Although drug gangs frequentlyhurl grenades at police headquar-ters and government installations, they rarely target crowds of by-standers.

The last such major attack wastwo years ago, when assailantsthrew grenades at thousands of rev-elers during Independence Day cel-ebrations in the western city ofMorelia. Eight people were killed.

Still, civilians have been in-creasingly caught up in Mexico’sbloody drug war, which hasclaimed more than 28,000 lives

since President Felipe Calderondeployed thousands of troops andfederal police to fight the cartelsin December 2006.

In Acapulco, meanwhile, policecontinued to search Sunday for 20men who were kidnapped whiletraveling together in the Pacificcoast resort city.

Authorities were investigatingwhether the missing men had tiesto drug gangs, said FernandoMonreal, director of the investiga-tive police in Guerrero state, whereAcapulco is located.

The kidnapping was reported topolice Friday by a man who hadbeen among the group but said hewas at the store when his compan-ions were abducted. He said themen, ages 17 to 47, were mechan-ics from Morelia, capital ofCalderon’s home state ofMichoacan, and saved up each yearto vacation together.

Police have since been unableto contact the man, and Monrealsaid he found his story suspicious.

“They were not tourists. It’svery suspicious that 20 men go onvacation in Acapulco without theirfamilies,” he told The AssociatedPress. “We are not ruling out thepossibility that they had ties to or-ganized crime.”

The plot involved al Qaeda andallied militants, possibly includingEuropean citizens or residents, thesources said. In Washington, U.S. of-ficials said Osama bin Laden and thetop al Qaeda leadership were likelybehind the plot, adding that the de-cision to issue the alert was basedon an accumulation of information, rather than a specific new revelation.

Some security officials havedrawn comparisons to the brazenMumbai attacks in 2008 that targetedcity landmarks such as luxury hotelsand a cafe and killed 166 people. TheU.S. State Department travel alertsaid public transportation systemsand other tourism-related facilitiescould be targets, noting that past at-tacks had struck rail, airline and boatservices.

Before the presence of new hybrid rice in Bali,

local farmers only harvest once a year for tahun

variety and twice a year for cicih variety. Both are

local varieties where to harvest it farmers cut the

stalk one by one using rice knife or anggapan.

Meanwhile, one of the favorite snacks during the

harvest time was wan. It is a snack made of young

white sticky rice or ketan that usually did not get

mature simultaneously. Its cake resembles uli but its

color is naturally green as it does not grow perfectly

mature yet. Uniquely, it was usually wrapped by

flower sheath of areca nut.

Ingredient: 500gram fresh young white sticky rice,

2 cup of grated coconut, ½ tsp salt, 100gr sugar, 1

glass of coconut water and banana leaf or sheath of

areca nut for wrapping.

Method:

· Roast the young white sticky rice until

cooked (dry and crispy). Pound them in stone mortar

or the like to take out their outer husks and then

sieved until they are thoroughly clean.

· Mix the young sticky rice with sugar, grated

coconut, salt, and coconut water. Stir and press

them well until smooth and mellow.

· Wrap the batter by banana leaf or sheath of

areca nut lengthwise. Take aside for some 5 hours to

make it dense and hardened. Now, it is ready to

serve! (BTN/punia)

Having a promenade or watch-ing birds at verdant rice field inBali is very exciting. Aside fromseeing nice rice terrace and beau-tiful birds, you may also encoun-ter farmers being absorbed incompleting their activities. As inthe household, they also organizevarious rituals for their rice fromthe very beginning of land culti-vation until by the harvest.

After planting rice, there areseries of activities to maintaintheir paddies. As a socio-religiousorganization, subak communitytreats their paddy as human byproviding them with life-cyclerituals. After cleaning up theweeds, farmers will performngulapin to regain the spirit orconsciousness of paddies. Then,42 days after the kick-off ritual(only one member selected to dothis), they organize collectiveritual at subak temple resumedwith one-day of silence or nyepi.During which, no one may do ac-tivities in the rice field.

When the paddy has got ‘preg-nant’ or is going to bloom, farmerwill perform miseh ritual. Strik-ing content of this oblation is as-sorted sour fruits and small penjor(bamboo log or midrib of sugarpalm) installed adjacent to theupstream shrine. As on human, thesour fruits mean to strengthen thepregnancy and expected the entiregrains could produce rice. Whenthe rice turns yellow, it is time for

the last ritual mabiyukukungmarked with the use of basketmade of plaited green coconut leaf. This ritual is resumed with the se-lection of rice known as DewaNini. By and large, it amounts to ahandful of rice stalk that will begiven offering in post-harvestritual at rice granary.

In technical matters, the subakregularly checks their water di-vider or temuku before entering thenew planting season. Due to natu-ral process and water flows, itscondition may have changed.Subak administrators will calibratethe measurement of temuku (ifmade of wooden log) pursuant tothe record book of water subscrip-tion. Measurement unit of watersubscription is called tektek. Thismeasurement is proportional to theextent of rice field so there will beno rice field having surplus of wa-ter or on the contrary. For instance, one hectare of land in the upperstream may need ½ tektek, whileat downstream will need 1 tektek. This happens due to disparity ofwater discharge.

Other than water subscription, there is also mutual assistancework. Let’s assume the subscrip-tion rate is IDR 10,000 per tektek. If a farmer subscribes for 1 tektekand he attends the mutual works,he is unnecessary to pay. However, when he uses more than 1 tektekhe should pay the excess pursuantto the rate.

In relation to water subscription, there are also some penalties. BAGHDAD - Iraq on Monday announced new “ex-tractable” proven crude oil reserves of 143.1 billion bar-rels, the third-highest level of reserves in the world byOPEC figures.

“Iraq’s oil reserves which are extractable are 143.1 bil-lion barrels,” Oil Minister Hussein al-Shahristani told anews conference in Baghdad.

Shahristani said 71 percent of those reserves were con-centrated in the south of the country, 20 percent in thenorth and nine percent in the centre.

The new figure represents a dramatic rise from previ-ously announced known reserves of 115 billion barrels, and means Iraq leapfrogs Iran into third place in terms ofproven reserves, according to data released by theOrganisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

It also provides a major boost to the country’s hopes ofrebuilding its battered economy and dated infrastructure, crippled by decades of conflict and sanctions.

Iraq currently produces about 2.4 million barrels of oilper day, but last year awarded contracts with foreign en-ergy firms to exploit 10 oilfields in the hopes of upping itsproduction as much as five-fold.

The country depends on oil exports for 95 percent ofgovernment revenue.

It is also seeking to increase its production of gas, witha public auction slated for October 20 where internationalcompanies can bid for the rights to exploit three gas fields.

LONDON - Nobel laureate economist Joseph Stiglitzhas warned a “wave of austerity” is sweeping across Eu-rope that could trigger a new recession, in comments pub-lished in a newspaper Sunday.

Stiglitz, who won the Nobel Prize for economics in 2001,also said the future of the euro was in doubt and raised theprospect that speculators may soon target Spain, which isstruggling to recover from a long downturn.

“The worry is that there is a wave of austerity buildingthroughout Europe and even hitting America’s shores,” ac-cording to Stiglitz in extracts from an updated edition of hisbook, “Freefall”, published in the Sunday Telegraph.

“As so many countries cut back on spending prema-turely, global aggregate demand will be lowered and growthwill slow — even perhaps leading to a double-dip reces-sion.

“America may have caused the global recession but Eu-rope is now responding in kind.”

He described the euro as “an experiment that may nowbe faltering” and said without a major institutional over-haul its 16 member states should consider giving up on thecurrency.

“It is perhaps better to admit failure and move on than toextract a high price in unemployment and human suffer-ing,” he said.

On Spain, Stiglitz — a one-time economic adviser toformer US president Bill Clinton — cautioned deep spend-ing cuts being introduced could prompt the country’seconomy to slow down and enter a “death spiral”.

“Spain may be entering the kind of death spiral that af-flicted Argentina just a decade ago,” said the economist.

“At present, Spain has not been attacked by speculators, but it may be only a matter of time.”

Inflation, corruption couldInflation, corruption couldInflation, corruption couldInflation, corruption couldInflation, corruption couldimpact China’s stability: Wenimpact China’s stability: Wenimpact China’s stability: Wenimpact China’s stability: Wenimpact China’s stability: Wen

In a rare and wide-ranging interviewwith CNN, Wen touched on what until re-cently have been taboo subjects in Beijingand sought to brush aside international criti-cisms, insisting China’s communist leaderswere adapting.

“I do have worry for the managementof inflation expectations in China,” Wen toldCNN’s “Fareed Zakaria GPS” program.

“And that is something that I havebeen trying very hard to manage appropri-ately and well, because I believe corruptionand inflation will have an adverse impacton stability of power in our country.”

In mid-September, Beijing admittedthat consumer inflation had risen at the fast-est pace in nearly two years in August, assevere floods and unusually hot weatherdestroyed crops, driving up food prices.

The figure marked the 10th straightmonth that the consumer price index, a keymeasure of inflation, had risen.

Wen also acknowledged the diffi-culties of balancing the desires of China’s1.3 billion people with the need to main-tain order across the vast, ethnically di-verse country.

“I believe freedom of speech is in-dispensable for any country, a country in thecourse of development and a country thathas become strong,” Wen told the network.

for and needs for democracy and freedomare irresistible,” Wen said.

He trumpeted the fact that acrossChina there were now some 400 millionInternet users and 800 million people withmobile phones.

And Wen revealed that he often logsonto the Internet.

“I have read sharp critical commentson the work of the government on theInternet and also there are commendablewords about the work of the government,”he said.

China’s communist leaders haveruled with an iron fist since revolutionaryleader Mao Zedong proclaimed the found-ing of Communist China in 1949, but in pastdecades have gradually opened somespheres such as economic activity.

But they remain wary of looseningcontrols on freedom of expression and dem-onstrations, and there are many high-pro-file dissidents and political activists impris-oned in China.

Wen insisted Sunday that any open-ing up “must be conducted within the rangeallowed by the constitution and the laws. Sothat the country will have a normal order.”

He said a four-trillion-yuan (586-bil-lion-dollar) stimulus package unveiled twoyears ago by China had steered its power-house economy on the right course amid theglobal financial downturn.

But he agreed China’s leaders were

on “high alert” against the possibility of anyeconomic bubble.

Global ratings agency Fitch Ratingswarned in mid-September that China facesa potential “hangover” from thegovernment’s massive spending spree.

Wen acknowledged Sunday that theimplementation of the stimulus packagemeant “there are fiscal and financial risks atthe level of local governments. We havesome financing vehicles of local govern-ments. They have some debts.”

One of the key challenges now fac-ing his country was to confront its structuralproblems, Wen said.

“I was one of the first ones to arguethat our economic development still lacksbalance, coordination and sustainability,” hetold CNN.

Turning to a row with the UnitedStates over the yuan, accused here of beingdeliberately undervalued, Wen accused USlawmakers of politicizing the issue saying atrade surplus was natural at his country’sstage of development.

“China does not pursue a trade sur-plus,” Wen said. “Some people in the UnitedStates, in particular some in the US Con-gress, do not know fully about China.

Asked what books he was reading,Wen responded that he often travels with“The Theory of Moral Sentiments” by Scot-tish philosopher Adam Smith and MarcusAurelius’s “Meditations.”

Professional runner Chris Carver prepares to drink beetroot juice inhis home in Otley, England, Friday Sept. 17, 2010.

Beet it: To exercise longer, try beetroot juicesame result he attributes to the juice —an extra eight miles — it would likelyhave taken an entire year. Some expertssay adding beetroot juice to your diet— like other foods such as cherry juiceor milk — could provide a performanceboost even beyond the blood, sweat andtears of more training.

In two studies conducted at ExeterUniversity on 15 men, Stephen Baileyand colleagues found cyclists whodrank a half-liter (about a half-quart)of beetroot juice several hours beforesetting off were able to ride up to 20percent longer than those who dranka placebo blackcurrant juice.

By examining the cyclists under ascanner that analyzes how much energyis needed for a muscle to contract,Bailey and colleagues discovered

beetroot juice allows cyclists to ex-ercise using less oxygen than normal.“The beetroot juice was effectiveeven without any additional train-ing,” Bailey said. “It reduces the en-ergy requirements on your musclesso you can last longer.” While thebeetroot juice was provided free byits manufacturer, Exeter Universitypaid for the research.

Bailey said the high nitrate con-tent of beetroot juice is responsible forits athletic benefits. Scientists aren’texactly sure how it works, but suspecthaving more nitric oxide in your body,a byproduct of nitrate, helps you ex-ercise with less oxygen. Bailey saidthe same effects might be possible ifpeople ate more nitrate-rich foods likebeetroot, lettuce or spinach.

“We’ve never been about bling-bling — but now we are definitivelygoing to get back to essentials,”Ducasse said. “There are no acces-sories — just like a very beautifulwoman does not need accessories.”

Of course, diners will be left inno doubt where they are — seatedunder the vast chandeliers of thehotel’s hushed, opulent interior.

But, said Ducasse, “we are areno longer in a cuisine of pomp andceremony. There will be moreluxury in the decor — but morepurity in the plate.” “Veal, Carrots”or “Vegetables, Fruits” —Ducasse’s new dishes sound a farcry from the poetic elaboration thatdefines gourmet menus the worldover, and nowhere more so than inFrance.

“Our modest ambition is to seta new gold standard for veal, duck, beef,” said the chef. Dishes of nomore than three ingredients willaim, he said, to “define the essenceof taste.” “Cuisine has become toocomplicated — this is about sub-ject, verb, adjective: duck, turnips, sauce.”

Liverpool hit new low as Chelsea extend leadGreek defender almost snatched apoint for the Merseysiders late onbut was denied by a brilliant savefrom Blackpool keeper Matt Gilksin a match where Liverpool strikerFernando Torres limped off afterjust 10 minutes with a groin prob-lem.

Before kick-off some Liverpoolsupporters staged the latest protestagainst feuding American co-own-ers Tom Hicks and George Gillett, who many Anfield regulars blamefor saddling the club with a debtmountain they believe has restrictedtheir ability to sign top-class play-ers.

But manager Roy Hodgson re-fused to blame off-field distractionsfor Liverpool’s poor start, tellingSky Sports: “It was a start we couldnever envisage but we’ve got to livewith it and do something about it.”

Delighted Blackpool counterpartIan Holloway added: “What pleasedme, coming to Anfield, is we man-aged to keep our game and scoretwo goals. “That’s the unexpectedbit. “I’m just proud of the lads. Itwas like the Alamo in the secondhalf. We’ve got lots and lots to learn. We need a little bit of fortune andwhat a fantastic save from MatthewGilks at the end.”

Didier Drogba put Chelsea intoa 39th-minute lead in Sunday’s late

game, flicking in Arsenal old boyAshley Cole’s cross before Alexmade the points safe in the closingminutes with a swerving free-kick.

Once more Arsenal were theequal of the title-holders when itcame to creating chances but, notfor the first time, their finishing letthem down in pursuit of a first ma-jor trophy since 2005.

“The game should have beenover before it started,” said Arsenalmanager Arsene Wenger after a de-feat that left the Gunners sevenpoints adrift of Chelsea. “We hadchance after chance and never putthe ball in the back of the net.”

Drogba’s goal was his 13th in 11starts against Arsenal and the IvoryCoast foward, having helped hisside bounce back from last week’sdefeat by Manchester City, said:“This one is much better because itput us 1-0 up and then we played abit better.”

Earlier, Manchester City’sAdam Johnson came off the benchto score the winner in a 2-1 vic-tory over Newcastle as RobertoMancini’s side climbed to secondin the table.

Johnson had only been on thepitch for a matter of minutes beforehe fired City in front with a quarterof an hour left at Eastlands afterCarlos Tevez’s early penalty had

been cancelled out by Newcastle’sJonas Gutierrez.

“What is pleasing is that theplayers have shown that there issubstance in the result,” City assis-tant manager Brian Kidd told

ESPN.Defeat for Newcastle was made

worse by the early loss of HatemBen Arfa with a suspected brokenleg after a crunching challenge byCity’s Nigel de Jong.

TOKYO - Feliciano Lopez ruined last year’s US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro’slatest come back game on Monday with a convincing first round victory at the Japan Open. The29-year-old Spaniard took 16 points in a row at the start of the second set to secure a 6-3, 6-0victory over the Argentine in just 71 minutes.

a good thing is it’s getting better. To-day, I played sometimes good tennis, sometimes bad.”

Del Potro lost his first service gameof the first set despite hitting a coupeof aces, but he soon broke back thanksto a Lopez double fault at 15-40.

But that was as good as it got forthe Argentine, who held his serve onlyonce more in the match before fallingaway in the second set.

“Apparently he is the same player,he has the same strokes, he is verystrong, but this is the second tourna-

ment he is playing after the injury, soI understand,” said Lopez. “I will seehim playing better, for sure, but ittakes time to play at the best levelwhen you are away for a long time. Ithink he is going to be back,” addedthe Spaniard.

Elsewhere seventh seed ErnestsGulbis of Latvia became the first seedto fall when he bowed to DmitryTursunov of Russia 6-3, 6-4, whileDaniel Gimeno-Traver of Spain de-feated Eduardo Schwank of Argen-tina 6-4, 6-4.

fore their first scheduled pre-sea-son exhibition.

Boozer signed a five-year dealworth almost 75 million dollarswith the Bulls after playing thepast six seasons with the Jazz. Heaveraged 19.5 points and 11.2 re-bounds a game last season forUtah.

The Bulls hope Boozer andJoakim Noah will provide insidepower in hopes of improving upontheir first-round playoff oustersthe past two seasons.

Contador says may quit if banned for dopingpositive test Friday - but he insists he isthe victim of contaminated food, say-ing he ate some contaminated meatbrought in from Spain.

Even so, Contador, who tested posi-tive for a minute quantity of the sub-stance on July 21, professed himself inhis interview broadcast Saturday nightto be “very optimistic” that he will beabsolved. “I think this will all be re-solved in a favourable manner,” insistedthe three-times champion.

UCI chief Pat McQuaid saysContador could have his fate decidedby scientists from the union and WorldAnti-Doping Agency (WADA).

World cycling’s ruling body itselfsays only a “very small concentration”of the drug had been found and that thecase warranted “further scientific inves-tigation” because the Cologne labora-tory which detected the clenbuterol isknown to be able to detect the tiniesttraces of drugs.

“The concentration found by thelaboratory was estimated at 50 pico-grams which is 400 times less than whatthe antidoping laboratories accreditedby WADA (World Anti DopingAgency) must be able to detect,” theUCI said Friday, adding that analysisof a B sample “confirmed the first”.

FERNANDO Alonso believeshe and Ferrari must brace them-selves for some ‘pain’ in the nextfew races if they are to come out ontop in the closely-fought worldchampionship battle. TheSpaniard’s triumphs in Italy andSingapore have thrust him firmlyinto the five-way contest to win thetitle this year - with his champion-ship chances having looked quiteslim earlier in the campaign.

But despite Ferrari’s resurgence,Alonso feels that he and his outfithave not yet experienced how toughthis title battle is going to get.

“I have kept in touch with theteam all the time and I know that inMaranello, everyone is delightedwith [the Singapore] win,” Alonsotold Ferrari’s official website.“That’s how it should be and I’mhappy too, even if I know the hardpart is still ahead of us.

“These two consecutive winshave reduced the gap that had builtup but we are definitely not leadingyet. Now it starts getting serious, wewill have to experience some painand it is time for everyone to givetheir all, without taking a singlebackward step.

Alonso braces for ‘pain’ in next races

Loeb said before the rally thatthis prospect made him more ner-vous, as he feared disappointing thelocal fans. But he duly claimed hisseventh consecutive championshipby dominating the event and admit-ted he was taken aback by the sup-port he received.

“For sure it is an incredible feel-ing, and especially to win,” saidLoeb. “When I arrived here, I knewthat there was a possibility to winthe rally, to win the championship, and all that in my home town. “Soit was a great challenge, and also abig pressure, because I knew thateverybody was waiting for this here,in the region. There was a lot ofsupport from a lot of people. Thefeeling was really great. It was in-credible.

“I was expecting this rally to bepopular, but I was very surprised tosee so many people for the rally, Icould not expect that there wouldbe so many people, everywhere: onstages, on the road sections, wav-

France’s Sebastien Loeb (R) and co-driver Monaco’s DanielElena celebrate their victory on the podium of France’s newWRC round, Rally Alsace, on October 3, 2010 in front of theEuropean Parliament in Strasbourg, eastern France.

Loeb emotionalafter home title win

Sebastien Loeb said he could not have imagined a more emotional way to clinch his seventhWorld Rally title than victory in his home region on last weekend’s Rally of France. The eventmoved from its famous Corsica base to Alsace this year, partly to make it more accessible forspectators than its previous island location, but also meaning that its concluding stages tookplace in Loeb’s home area.

ing in front of their house, in the ser-vice park, everywhere. And all thatin a very nice atmosphere. I was re-ally happy to see this.

“It has been a perfect event, likein Corsica in 2004, when we wonboth championships at the sametime. Here, it is even more specialbecause it is really at home for me.”He admitted that he had been tooemotional to drive fast in the finalstage, based in his home town ofHaguenau.

Asked if he had been tearful onthe stage, Loeb replied: “A little bityes, especially when I saw myfriends waiting for me after thecheckpoint. It was incredible. I wasnot able to drive fast in that stage. Itried, at the start, and then I said‘okay, just drive through.’”

The huge turn-out of spectatorsfor the event led to constant delaysas the officials worked to ensure thatthe crowds were in safe positions onall the stages. Some drivers criticisedthe organisation of the rally, but

Citroen team boss Olivier Quesnelsaid it was a price worth paying.

“It was the first time in Alsace,so there were some problems, butwe prefer this with plenty of peoplethan a very well organised rallywithout anybody,” he said.

Former world champion PetterSolberg, who finished third, agreedthat the atmosphere had been in-credible and had nothing but praisefor the organisers’ handling of thecrowds.

“I have never seen anything likethis for many years, so much sup-port from the spectators - to Loebespecially, but to all the drivers,”said Solberg. “We would have togo back to Portugal many yearsago to see something like this. Itwas unbelievable, everywhere. This is what we want to have inevery rally.

“The police have been fantastic;it was the best support from policethat I have seen in any rally. Theorganisation has been very good.”

“There are still five drivers in thehunt for the title. So many times thisyear we have seen that the situationcan change really quickly, so any-thing could still happen. What is cer-tain is that if any of the five put afoot wrong, then it will be evenharder for them. I stick with my be-lief that the key is to always finishon the podium and then do the mathsin Abu Dhabi.”

Despite keep his ambitions incheck ahead of the final four racesof the campaign, Alonso says he does

take heart from the fact that hisFerrari has appeared competitive onboth low and high-downforce tracksin recent weeks.

“The wins in Monza andSingapore inspire confidence, espe-cially as they came after a difficultseason, in which our championshipchances have often hung by athread,” he said.

“Winning on two very differenttypes of track confirms that our caris very versatile and so we can tacklethe coming races without any fear.”
