Cooking Up a Storm If you can read you can cook. Tahlia from Year 3 enjoyed following a recipe to make a treat for her family.

Edinburgh College Band Visits Local Primary In preparation for their tour to New Zealand later in the school year, our band has been performing at some of the local primary schools. They have been very well received as has been evidenced through the audi-ence’s exuberant singing and clapping along with the band.

Peer Support Grand Prix Fun Last Friday, as part of the Secondary Peer Support program, Year 7 and their Peer Sup-port partners spent the day at the Australi-an Grand Prix. Magnificent weather greeted the students as they arrived at Albert Park. There was plenty of action on the track and in the sky that attracted the attention of each and every student. - Mr Jones

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L) PB4L has now been in our school for over two years. In short, it is an educational approach to addressing conduct in the school envi-ronment, at an individual level, group level and as a whole school. It aims to address issues that interfere with learning at school, as well as equip students with behaviours and characters that enable them to fit seamlessly into society. Parents and caregivers, bus drivers and ancillary staff, teachers and administrators are all encouraged to speak the same language to our students so the core values of 'respect, resilience, responsibility and willingness to learn' continue to be instilled and strengthened in our students on a daily basis. PB4L value for Term 1 & 2 is ‘Responsibility’. Students are asked to be organised in matters concerning the readiness to learn each day, in being a person of integrity by being honest, and following through with assigned roles, in keeping the school environment tidy, and in completing work set for their academic success. While there are times when things go wrong, generally speaking, excuses should be minimal. If there is a reason, the student should do the responsible thing by providing evidence and forward planning, such as a note or by being proactive in ask-ing for extensions prior to due dates. Thank you to our parents and ancillary staff who uphold our PB4L values in their areas of influence. The Ambit Games: Ambit means “a sphere of influ-ence”. Our Secondary ambit leaders have organised soccer for their first game this year. This started with a bang a week ago, and was enjoyed by the different house teams in the Secondary. Merit Morning Tea: Years 7 to 9 enjoyed a morning tea to celebrate their merits this term. We congratulate you for doing the right thing because it is the right thing to do and because it is of service to others. We also congratulate our students for upholding our school values. Years 10 to 12 will celebrate their merits in the first week of Term 2. - Mrs Brooks

PB4L Term 1 Winners During this term, Primary staff regularly gave out ‘Gotcha-tron’ tokens to students who displayed one of the PB4L values in either the classroom or in the playground. The students place their tokens in the ‘Gotcha-tron’ barrel from which five students are drawn to receive a gold token.

Kinder Kids Visit the Elderly During visits to Lilydale Aged Care Facility, the children sing songs and read stories with the residents whom they lovingly refer to as the Nanny’s and the Pa’s. Each of the children make a special gift that they give to one of their new friends. This monthly excursion is a great opportunity for the Kinder children to learn more about the community around them. It’s wonderful to see the friendships that form over the year between the Kinder chil-dren and their new friends. - Emma H.

Term 1 PB4L student winners: Emily, John, Imogen, Milly and Akua.

Dakota, Lacey, Zane, Hunter, Madeleine, Kiera, Sean, Charlotte C., Emily C., Jamen, Melody, Neysa, Emily B. and Mason.

Student Awards Congratulations to the following students who were recog-nised for exhibiting one of the PB4L (Positive Behaviour for Learning) values.

Year 7 SEISS Basketball Makes Four Wins for the Term Champion is an overused word these days but there has been plenty of success for our basketball teams at Edinburgh College this term. Year 7 basketballers made it three premiership flags in a row for the College in the SEISS tournament on Monday. For the first time this year, both the boys and the girls won their division. Despite only having one sub, the girls won all their games with ease. On the other hand, the boys had to overcome a very strong Bayside team who pipped them by a basket in the first game of the day. When they met them again in the final however, our boys were out in front from the start.

All Edinburgh College teams have played very well this term and in a terrific spirit. - Mr Brooks

Year 8’s on Their Bikes Plans have been finalised for a Year 8 Geography field trip in Western Victoria early next term. In preparation for some half day hikes and bike rides during this field trip, the students enjoyed a 20 to 27km bike ride along the Warburton Trail last Wednesday. Testing and improving physical fitness, socialising, resilience build-ing and nature appre-ciation are just some of the important goals that were achieved during a very pleasant after-noon ride. One student com-mented that they’d like to do bike riding more often, a sentiment shared by many in the group. - Mr Brooks

The Study of Water In a recent Geography field trip, Year 7 covered quite a distance as they traced the Yarra River from as close to the source as they could easily get, all the way to its mouth. This led us from the Upper Yarra Dam to under the Westgate Bridge, with freeways roaring and big ships setting out on their journies. We found the upper and lower rivers to be quite distinct in character, features and use. Students took water samples for testing in Science and observations and notes were made on what our local river is used for. We also found time for some mapping exercises along the way. - Mr Brooks

Swimming Awards Four students from Years 5 and 6 were awarded a medal for earning the most points for their sports house in the recent Edinburgh Swimming Carnival. - Mrs Smith

Cross Country Races in Full Swing As we go to print, students from Years 5 to 12 are participating in the inter-house Cross Country. Results will be published next term.

Trusting God’s plan for your

everyday life is equally as

important as trusting God’s plan

for your eternal life.

From the Principal Term 1 Reflections We have enjoyed a positive and productive start to 2018. Each week our newsletters and Face-book page boast interactive learning stories from across our campus and beyond. Our teams have enjoyed worshipping, meeting and planning for

2018. Mrs Andoh-Okai, Mrs Pascoe and Mrs Ferry continue to lead their teams with a real sense of united direction. The new staff members have quickly fitted into and added immense value to our school culture. The learning and teaching programs are in full swing and our new ICT support team has also transitioned successfully. Enrolments are up from 276 (2017) to 289 (2018), and we will continue to run a strong marketing campaign throughout Semester 1. Our BIG goals for 2018 and onwards are as follows:

Daily commitment of our lives and Edinburgh College to God

Strong and supportive Christian culture

Consistent learning and teaching practices across the campus

Clear and effective communication and processes across the entire campus, and into our community

Mrs Margaret Andoh-Okai has had a number of new staff members join the exciting ELC team. The new front play area for 2 year olds has added a lovely and safe area for our little ones to play in. Plans for the third room extension are well on the way. We are so blessed to have this vibrant ELC on our campus! Future Planning 2018 - Master Plan The College Council has approved the commencement of updating our campus Master Plan. This plan includes the major refurbishment of our existing Home Economics and Textiles Rooms which will be begin late in Term 2. Enjoy the Easter Holiday Period Thank you for supporting Edinburgh College. We pray that each of our families and staff members enjoy the Easter and holiday break. I am looking forward to attending the annual Victorian Adventist Churches Convention over the Easter weekend, a short break with my family and then back to Edinburgh College for Term 2 with our incredible team and amazing students. - Mr Tim Borgas

ELC Fundraisers: Closet Cleanout - Red Nose Needs More Clothing The end of the summer season is always a good time to have a good clean out of clothing, towels, sheets, belts, handbags and paired shoes. You can help RED NOSE and the ELC by dropping your bags of unwanted clothing in to the ELC or Primary between April 20th and 26th.

Young Leaders Conference Ten student leaders from the Primary reflect on the Conference they recently attended in Melbourne. For National Young Leaders we heard three different speakers: Cosentino, a magician, John Coutis who has lived his life without his leg. He impressed us all by coming in on a skateboard. We also had Harrison Craig who was my favourite speaker. He found that when he sang he didn’t stutter. When he was 18 he entered the second season of “The Voice” and won. - Liana At the conference, we heard from multiple presenters including

John Coutis. John never had any legs and always walked with his

hands or on his skateboard. When he was young, he got bullied

many times but even though you get hurt, you have to go

through the times

you don’t like and

keep going. - William

My highlight was the

speakers. I loved

listening to John

Coutis speaking.

He taught us to keep

on going no matter

what happens to

you. I think he

showed a lot of

determination to

persevere after

everything that he

went through. - Chayse

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus

Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of

all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles,

so that we can comfort those in any trouble with

the comfort we ourselves receive from God.
