1. Introduction

The castle has become a recognisable symbol of Edinburgh, and of Scotland. It is

an historic fortress which dominates the skyline of the city of Edinburgh, Scotland

from its position on the Castle Rock.

The Castle is the oldest building

in the city of Edinburgh, there has

been a royal castle on the rock

since at least in the 12th century.

The castle is Scotland's most-

visited paid tourist attraction,

with over 1.2 million visitors per

year.

2.1 The Castle RockCastle Rock is a volcanic plug in the middle of Edinburgh upon which Edinburgh

Castle sits . The summit of the castle rock is 130 metres (430 ft) above sea level .

The only readily accessible route to the castle lies to the east, where the ridge

slopes more gently.

The defensive advantage of such a

site is clear, but the geology of the

rock also presents difficulties, since

basalt is an extremely poor aquifer.

Providing water to the Upper Ward

of the castle was problematic, the

water supply often ran out during

drought or siege.

St Margaret's Chapel, in Edinburgh Castle, is

the oldest surviving building in Edinburgh,

Scotland.

It was constructed in the 12th century.

Scottish National War Memorial which

commemorates the dead of the First and

Second World Wars and of military campaigns

since 1945.

The Royal Palace comprises the former royal apartments,

which were the residence of the later Stewart monarchs.

On the first floor there are the Crown, Sceptre and Sword of

State . These are the oldest crown jewels in the British Isles.

Furthermore, the Stone of Scone, upon which the monarchs

of Scotland were traditionally crowned, has been kept in the

Crown Room since its return to Scotland in 1996.

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is an annual display of stunning military sets

from around the world.

The One O'Clock Gun is a time signal, fired every day at precisely 13:00, excepting

Sunday, Good Friday and Christmas Day.

The castle is a focal point for annual fireworks displays which mark Edinburgh's

Hogmanay (new year) celebrations, and the end of the Edinburgh Festival in the

summer.
